Advanced membrane-based high-value metal recovery from wastewater

Considering the circular economy and environmental protection, sustainable recovery of high-value metals from wastewater has become a prominent concern. Unlike conventional methods featuring extensive chemicals or energy consumption, membrane separation technology plays a crucial role in facilitating the sustainable and efficient recovery of valuable metals from wastewater due to its attractive features. In this review, we first briefly summarize the sustainable supply chain and significance of sustainable recovery of aqueous high-value metals. Then, we review the most recent advances and application potential in promising state-of-the-art membrane-based technologies for recovery of high-value metals (silver, gold, rhenium, platinum, ruthenium, palladium, iridium, osmium, and rhodium) from wastewater effluents. In particular, pressure-based membranes, liquid membranes, membrane distillation, forward osmosis, electrodialysis and membrane-based hybrid technologies and their mechanism of high-value metal recovery is thoroughly discussed. Then, engineering application and economic sustainability are also discussed for membrane-based high-value metal recovery. The review finally concludes with a critical and insightful overview of the techno-economic viability and future research direction of membrane technologies for efficient high-value metal recovery from wastewater.

Mechanisms and Strategies of Advanced Oxidation Processes for Membrane Fouling Control in MBRs: Membrane-Foulant Removal versus Mixed-Liquor Improvement

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are well-established and widely utilized technologies with substantial large-scale plants around the world for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. Despite their widespread adoption, membrane fouling presents a significant impediment to the broader application of MBRs, necessitating ongoing research and development of effective antifouling strategies. As highly promising, efficient, and environmentally friendly chemical methods for water and wastewater treatment, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have demonstrated exceptional competence in the degradation of pollutants and inactivation of bacteria in aqueous environments, exhibiting considerable potential in controlling membrane fouling in MBRs through direct membrane foulant removal (MFR) and indirect mixed-liquor improvement (MLI). Recent proliferation of research on AOPs-based antifouling technologies has catalyzed revolutionary advancements in traditional antifouling methods in MBRs, shedding new light on antifouling mechanisms. To keep pace with the rapid evolution of MBRs, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive summary and discussion of the antifouling advances of AOPs in MBRs, particularly with a focus on understanding the realizing pathways of MFR and MLI. In this critical review, we emphasize the superiority and feasibility of implementing AOPs-based antifouling technologies in MBRs. Moreover, we systematically overview antifouling mechanisms and strategies, such as membrane modification and cleaning for MFR, as well as pretreatment and in-situ treatment for MLI, based on specific AOPs including electrochemical oxidation, photocatalysis, Fenton, and ozonation. Furthermore, we provide recommendations for selecting antifouling strategies (MFR or MLI) in MBRs, along with proposed regulatory measures for specific AOPs-based technologies according to the operational conditions and energy consumption of MBRs. Finally, we highlight future research prospects rooted in the existing application challenges of AOPs in MBRs, including low antifouling efficiency, elevated additional costs, production of metal sludge, and potential damage to polymeric membranes. The fundamental insights presented in this review aim to elevate research interest and ignite innovative thinking regarding the design, improvement, and deployment of AOPs-based antifouling approaches in MBRs, thereby advancing the extensive utilization of membrane-separation technology in the field of wastewater treatment.

Piezoceramic membrane with built-in ultrasound for reactive oxygen species generation and synergistic vibration anti-fouling

Piezoceramic membranes have emerged as a prominent solution for membrane fouling control. However, the prevalent use of toxic lead and limitations of vibration-based anti-fouling mechanism impede their wider adoption in water treatment. This study introduces a Mn/BaTiO3 piezoceramic membrane, demonstrating a promising in-situ anti-fouling efficacy and mechanism insights. When applied to an Alternating Current at a resonant frequency of 20 V, 265 kHz, the membrane achieves optimal vibration, effectively mitigating various foulants such as high-concentration oil (2500 ppm, including real industrial oil wastewater), bacteria and different charged inorganic colloidal particles, showing advantages over other reported piezoceramic membranes. Importantly, our findings suggest that the built-in ultrasonic vibration of piezoceramic membranes can generate reactive oxygen species. This offers profound insights into the distinct anti-fouling processes for organic and inorganic wastewater, supplementing and unifying the traditional singular vibrational anti-fouling mechanism of piezoceramic membranes, and potentially propelling the development of piezoelectric catalytic membranes.

Durable Nano-Flower Structured Foam Coupled with Electrically-Driven in Situ Aeration Enable High-Flux Oil/Water Emulsion Separation with Dynamic Antifouling Ability

The conventional membranes used for separating oil/water emulsions are typically limited by the properties of the membrane materials and the impact of membrane fouling, making continuous long-term usage unachievable. In this study, a filtering electrode with synchronous self-cleaning functionality is devised, exhibiting notable antifouling ability and an extended operational lifespan, suitable for the continuous separation of oil/water emulsions. Compared with the original Ti foam, the in situ growth of NiTi-LDH (Layered double hydroxide) nano-flowers endows the modified Ti foam (NiTi-LDH/TF) with exceptional superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Driven by gravity, a rejection rate of over 99% is achieved for various emulsions containing oil content ranging from 1% to 50%, as well as oil/seawater emulsions. The flux recovery rate exceeds 90% after one hundred cycles and a 4-h filtration period. The enhanced separation performance is realized through the "gas bridge" effect during in situ aeration and electrochemical anodic oxidation. The internal aeration within the membrane pores contributes to the removal of oil foulants. This study underscores the potential of coupling foam metal filtration materials with electrochemical technology, providing a paradigm for the exploration of novel oil/water separation membranes.

CdBi2S4-Decorated Aminated Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber for Photocatalytic Treatment of Cr(VI) and Tetracycline Wastewater

The significant threat posed by the high toxicity of heavy metals and antibiotics in water pollutants has prompted a growing emphasis on the development of highly efficient removal methods for these pollutants. In this paper, flexible electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber-supported CdBi2S4 was synthesized via a hydrothermal method, followed by amination treatment with diethylenetriamine (DETA). The as-prepared CdBi2S4/NH2-PAN nanofiber, enriched with sulfur vacancies, demonstrated outstanding visible-light trapping ability and a suitable band gap, leading to efficient separation and transport of photogenerated carriers, ultimately resulting in exceptional photocatalytic capability. The optimal 3-CdBi2S4/NH2-PAN nanofiber achieved impressive reduction rates of 92.26% for Cr(VI) and 96.45% for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) within 120 min, which were much higher than those for CdS/NH2-PAN, Bi2S3/NH2-PAN, and CdBi2S4/PAN nanofibers. After five cycles, the removal rate of the CdBi2S4/NH2-PAN nanofiber consistently remained above 90%. Their ease of separation and recovery from the application environment contributes to their practicality. Additionally, compared with conventional suspended particle catalyzers, the composite nanofiber exhibited remarkable flexibility and self-supporting properties.

Chelation-directed interface engineering of in-place self-cleaning membranes

Water-energy sustainability will depend upon the rapid development of advanced pressure-driven separation membranes. Although energy-efficient, water-treatment membranes are constrained by ubiquitous fouling, which may be alleviated by engineering self-cleaning membrane interfaces. In this study, a metal-polyphenol network was designed to direct the armorization of catalytic nanofilms (ca. 18 nm) on inert polymeric membranes. The chelation-directed mineralized coating exhibits high polarity, superhydrophilicity, and ultralow adhesion to crude oil, enabling cyclable crude oil-in-water emulsion separation. The in-place flux recovery rate exceeded 99.9%, alleviating the need for traditional ex situ cleaning. The chelation-directed nanoarmored membrane exhibited 48-fold and 6.8-fold figures of merit for in-place self-cleaning regeneration compared to the control membrane and simple hydraulic cleaning, respectively. Precursor interaction mechanisms were identified by density functional theory calculations. Chelation-directed armorization offers promise for sustainable applications in catalysis, biomedicine, environmental remediation, and beyond.

New directions on membranes for removal and degradation of emerging pollutants in aqueous systems

Emerging pollutants (EPs) refer to a group of non-regulated chemical or biological substances that have been recently introduced or detected in the environment. These pollutants tend to exhibit resistance to conventional treatment methods and can persist in the environment for prolonged periods, posing potential adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. As we enter a new era of managing these pollutants, membrane-based technologies hold significant promise in mitigating impact of EPs on the environment and safeguarding human health due to their high selectivity, efficiency, cost-effectiveness and capability for simultaneous separation and degradation. Moreover, these technologies continue to evolve rapidly with the development of new membrane materials and functionalities, advanced treatment strategies, and analyses for effectively treating EPs of more recent concerns. The objective of this review is to present the latest directions and advancements in membrane-based technologies for addressing EPs. By highlighting the progress in this field, we aim to share valuable perspectives with researchers and contribute to the development of future directions in sustainable treatments for EPs.

Robust PVA/GO@MOF membrane with fast photothermal self-cleaning property for oily wastewater purification

The poor mechanical durability and weak fouling resistance of oil/water separation membranes severely restrict their applications in industry. Herein, a robust PVA/GO@MOF membrane with fast photothermal self-cleaning capability was developed through facile chemical crosslinking and suction-filtration strategies. Attributed to the powerful underwater superoleophobicity, the PVA/GO@MOF membrane exhibited extraordinary anti-oil adhesion even for high-viscosity crude oil and continuous crude oil emulsion purification capability with stable flux (1020 L m-2 h-1 bar-1) and exceptional efficiency (> 99.3%) even after 60 min. Most importantly, in comparison to reported photocatalytic self-cleaning oil/water separation membranes, the PVA/GO@MOF membrane can degrade organic contaminants more rapidly with a higher degradation rate (99.9%) in 50 min due to the superior photothermal conversion capacity. The synergistic photothermal and photocatalytic effects significantly enhanced photodegradation efficiency, which created opportunities for in-depth treatment of complex oily wastewater. Besides, the obtained membrane displayed excellent chemical and mechanical durability with underwater oil contact angle (UWOCA) above 150° even in harsh environments, such as corrosive solutions, UV irradiation, ultrasound treatment, abrasion experiment and bending test. Therefore, the developed PVA/GO@MOF membrane with robust durability and fast photocatalytic self-cleaning property is highly expected to purify oily wastewater and degrade organic pollutants.

Membrane processes enhanced by various forms of physical energy: A systematic review on mechanisms, implementation, application and energy efficiency

Membrane technologies in water and wastewater treatment have been eagerly pursued over the past decades, yet membrane fouling remains the major bottleneck to overcome. Membrane fouling control methods which couple membrane processes with online in situ application of external physical energy input (EPEI) are getting closer and closer to reality, thanks to recent advances in novel materials and energy deliverance methods. In this review, we summarized recent studies on membrane fouling control techniques that depend on (i) electric field, (ii) acoustic field, (iii) magnetic field, and (iv) photo-irradiation (mostly ultraviolet or visible light). Mechanisms of each energy input were first reported, which defines the applicability of these methods to certain wastewater matrices. Then, means of implementation were discussed to evaluate the compatibility of these fouling control methods with established membrane techniques. After that, preferred applications of each energy input to different foulant types and membrane processes in the experiment reports were summarized, along with a discussion on the trends and knowledge gaps of such fouling control research. Next, specific energy consumption in membrane fouling control and flux enhancement was estimated and compared, based on the experimental results reported in the literature. Lastly, strength and weakness of these methods and future perspectives were presented as open questions.

MOF-Based Photocatalytic Membrane for Water Purification: A Review

Photocatalytic membranes can effectively integrate membrane separation and photocatalytic degradation processes to provide an eco-friendly solution for efficient water purification. It is of great significance to develop highly efficient photocatalytic membranes driven by visible light to ensure the long-term stability of membrane separation systems and the maximum utilization of solar energy. Metal-organic framework (MOF) is an emerging photocatalyst with a well-defined structure and tunable chemical properties, showing a broad application prospect in the construction of high-performance photocatalytic membranes. Herein, this work provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Initially, this work outlines the main tailoring strategies that facilitate the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of MOF-based photocatalysts. Next, this work introduces commonly used methods for fabricating MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Subsequently, this work discusses the application and mechanisms of MOF-based photocatalytic membranes toward organic pollutant degradation, metal ion removal, and membrane fouling mitigation. Finally, challenges in developing MOF-based photocatalytic membranes and their practical applications are presented, while also pointing out future research directions toward overcoming these existing limitations.

Membrane-catalysis integrated system for contaminants degradation and membrane fouling mitigation: A review

The integration of catalytic degradation and membrane separation processes not only enables continuous degradation of contaminants but also effectively alleviates inevitable membrane fouling, demonstrating fascinating practical value for efficient water purification. Such membrane-catalysis integrated system (MCIS) has attracted tremendous research interest from scientists in chemical engineering and environmental science recently. In this review, the advantages of MCIS are discussed, including the membrane structure regulation, stable catalyst loading, nano-confinement effect, and efficient natural organic matter (NOM) exclusion, highlighting the synergistic effect between membrane separation and catalytic process. Subsequently, the design considerations for the fabrication of catalytic membranes, including substrate membrane, catalytic material, and fabrication method, are comprehensively summarized. Afterward, the mechanisms and performance of MCIS based on different catalytic types, including liquid-phase oxidants/reductants involved MCIS, gas involved MCIS, photocatalysis involved MCIS, and electrocatalysis involved MCIS are reviewed in detail. Finally, the research direction and future perspectives of catalytic membranes for water purification are proposed. The current review provides an in-depth understanding of the design of catalytic membranes and facilitates their further development for practical applications in efficient water purification.

Facile Preparation of PVDF/CoFe2O4-ZnO Hybrid Membranes for Water Depollution

In this investigation, CoFe2O4-PVDF and CoFe2O4-ZnO-PVDF hybrid membranes were prepared using a modified phase inversion method in which a magnetic field was applied during the casting process to ensure a uniform distribution of nanomaterials on the membrane surface. Thus, better absorption of light and increased participation of nanoparticles in the photodegradation process is ensured. The influence of nanomaterials on the crystalline structure, surface morphology, and hydrophilicity properties of the PVDF membrane was investigated. The obtained results indicated that the hybrid membrane exhibited significant differences in its intrinsic properties due to the nanomaterials addition. The hydrophilicity properties of the PVDF membrane were improved by the presence of nanoparticles. The photocatalytic decomposition of aqueous Rhodamine B solution in the presence of the prepared membrane and under visible light irradiation was tested. The hybrid membrane containing CoFe2O4-ZnO on its surface exhibited a high removal rate.

Photocatalytic hydrogel film assisted forward osmosis (PFO) for water treatment: Sustainable performance and contaminant control

The integration of catalytic oxidation with forward osmosis (FO) holds promising potential to address two crucial challenges encountered by FO: fouling and unsustainable performance, but suitable approaches are still rare. Herein, we have successfully developed a photocatalysis-assisted forward osmosis (PFO) system. In the PFO, a self-made porous carbon nitride doped functional carbon nanotube photocatalytic hydrogel film (PCN@CNTM) was engaged in the FO process in an inventive way by simply sticking to the commercial FO membrane surface, preventing damage to the membrane from the catalyst's direct insertion and delaying the assault from the oxidation groups. PFO allowed organic pollutants to decompose in the feed solution (90%) and on the membrane surface, regulating the water chemical potential and giving the FO membrane antifouling properties. This resulted in sustainable water flux (11.8 LMH) with no significant membrane fouling in PFO, whereas in FO alone there was a significant fouling and flux drop (from 12.73 to 7.23 LMH in 4 h). Moreover, the expensive FO membrane was protected while the hydrogel film can be replaced on demand. The PFO exemplifies the concept of synergistic technology integration, presenting a new perspective on harnessing the strengths of distinct technologies in a mutually beneficial manner.

Engineering In Situ Catalytic Cleaning Membrane Via Prebiotic-Chemistry-Inspired Mineralization

Pressure-driven membrane separation promises a sustainable energy-water nexus but is hindered by ubiquitous fouling. Natural systems evolved from prebiotic chemistry offer a glimpse of creative solutions. Herein, a prebiotic-chemistry-inspired aminomalononitrile (AMN)/Mn2+ -mediated mineralization method is reported for universally engineering a superhydrophilic hierarchical MnO2 nanocoating to endow hydrophobic polymeric membranes with exceptional catalytic cleaning ability. Green hydrogen peroxide catalytically triggered in-situ cleaning of the mineralized membrane and enabled operando flux recovery to reach 99.8%. The mineralized membrane exhibited a 9-fold higher recovery compared to the unmineralized membrane, which is attributed to active catalytic antifouling coupled with passive hydration antifouling. Electron density differences derived from the precursor interaction during mediated mineralization unveiled an electron-rich bell-like structure with an inner electron-deficient Mn core. This work paves the way to construct multifunctional engineered materials for energy-efficient water treatment as well as for diverse promising applications in catalysis, solar steam generation, biomedicine, and beyond.

Research on the Antibacterial Properties of MXene-Based 2D-2D Composite Materials Membrane

Novel MXene-based two-dimensional (2D) membranes are widely used for water purification due to their highly controllable structure and antibacterial properties. However, in the process of membrane separation, the problems of membrane fouling, especially biological fouling, limits the further application of MXene-based membranes. In this study, in order to improve the antibacterial and separation properties of membranes, three kinds of MXene-based 2D-2D composite membranes (M2~M4) were prepared using polyethersulfone (PES) as the substrate, which were GO@MXene, O-g-C₃N₄@MXene and BiOCl@MXene composite membranes respectively. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of M2~M4 against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was further improved, especially the antibacterial ratio of M4 against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was up to 50% and 82.4%, respectively. By comparing the surface morphology of MXene membrane and modified membrane treated bacteria through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was found that the cell density on modified membrane was significantly lower than that of pure MXene membrane.

Mesoporous SiC-Based Photocatalytic Membranes and Coatings for Water Treatment

Photocatalytically active silicon carbide (SiC)-based mesoporous layers (pore sizes between 5 and 30 nm) were synthesized from preceramic polymers (polymer-derived ceramic route) on the surface and inside the pores of conventional macroporous α-alumina supports. The hybrid membrane system obtained, coupling the separation and photocatalytical properties of SiC thin films, was characterized by different static and dynamic techniques, including gas and liquid permeation measurements. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by considering the degradation efficiency of a model organic pollutant (methylene blue, MB) under UV light irradiation in both diffusion and permeation modes using SiC-coated macroporous supports. Specific degradation rates of 1.58 × 10^-8 mol s^-1 m^-2 and 7.5 × 10^-9 mol s^-1 m^-2 were obtained in diffusion and permeation modes, respectively. The performance of the new SiC/α-Al₂O₃ materials compares favorably to conventional TiO₂-based photocatalytic membranes, taking advantage of the attractive physicochemical properties of SiC. The developed synthesis strategy yielded original photocatalytic SiC/α-Al₂O₃ composites with the possibility to couple the ultrafiltration SiC membrane top-layer with the SiC-functionalized (photocatalytic) macroporous support. Such SiC-based materials and their rational associations on porous supports offer promising potential for the development of efficient photocatalytic membrane reactors and contactors for the continuous treatment of polluted waters.

Preparation of site-specific Z-scheme g-C3N4/PAN/PANI@LaFeO3 cable nanofiber membranes by coaxial electrospinning: Enhancing filtration and photocatalysis performance

The coaxial electrospinning method for preparation of g-C₃N₄/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyaniline (PANI)@LaFeO₃ cable fiber membrane (PC@PL) was designed for adsorption-filtration-photodegradation of pollutants. A series of characterization results show that LaFeO₃ and g-C₃N₄ nanoparticles (NPs) are respectively loaded in the inner and outer layers of PAN/PANI composite fibers to construct the site-specific Z-type heterojunction system with spatially separated morphologies. The PANI in cable not only possesses abundant exposed amino/imino functional groups for adsorption of contaminant molecules but also due to the excellent electrical conductivity works as a redox medium for collecting and consuming the electrons and holes from LaFeO₃ and g-C₃N₄, which can efficiently promote photo-generated charge carriers separation and improve the catalytic performance. Further investigations demonstrate that as a photo-Fenton catalyst LaFeO₃ in PC@PL catalyzes/activates the H₂O₂ generated in situ by LaFeO₃/g-C₃N₄, further enhancing the decontamination efficiency of the PC@PL. The porous, hydrophilic, antifouling, flexible and reusable properties of the PC@PL membrane significantly enhance the mass transfer efficiency of reactants by filtration effect and increase the amount of dissolved oxygen, thus producing massive •OH for degradation of pollutants, which maintains the water flux (1184 L m^-2. h^-1 (LMH)) and the rejection rate (98.5%). Profiting from its unique synergistic effect of adsorption, photo-Fenton and filtration, PC@PL exhibits wonderful self-cleaning performance and distinguished removal rate for methylene blue (97.0%), methyl violet (94.3%), ciprofloxacin (87.6%) and acetamiprid (88.9%) within 75 min, disinfection (100% Escherichia coli (E. coli) and 80% Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) inactivation)) and excellent cycle stability.

Overflow Control for Sustainable Development by Superwetting Surface with Biomimetic Structure

Liquid flowing around a solid edge, i.e., overflow, is a commonly observed flow behavior. Recent research into surface wetting properties and microstructure-controlled overflow behavior has attracted much attention. Achieving controllable macroscale liquid dynamics by manipulating the micro-nanoscale liquid overflow has stimulated diverse scientific interest and fostered widespread use in practical applications. In this review, we outline the evolution of overflow and present a critical survey of the mechanism of surface wetting properties and microstructure-controlled liquid overflow in multilength scales ranging from centimeter to micro and even nanoscale. We summarize the latest progress in utilizing the mechanisms to manipulate liquid overflow and achieve macroscale liquid dynamics and in emerging applications to manipulate overflow for sustainable development in various fields, along with challenges and perspectives.

Preparation of chlorine-resistant and regenerable antifouling nanofiltration membrane through interfacial polymerization using beta cyclodextrin monomers

Constructing membrane with good chlorine resistance and antifouling properties is considered to be important challenges confronting membrane applications. In this study, a composite nanofiltration (NF) membrane (β-CD_x/y/PES) was prepared by interfacial polymerization using beta cyclodextrin (β-CD) monomers. Subsequently, the β-CD-based (AZ-β-CD_x/y/PES) membrane was prepared by assembling azobenzene labeled zwitterions into the hydrophobic internal cavity of β-CD via host-guest interaction. The optimized membrane exhibited slight change in water flux and rejection under chlorine environment. The AZ-β-CD_x/y/PES membrane also displayed an evidently lower loss in water flux in the antifouling test in comparison with the β-CD_x/y/PES membrane. More interestingly, the trans azo groups in azobenzene labeled zwitterions can turn into the cis isomers as the visible light irradiation converted to the UV light irradiation, breaking the interaction between azobenzene labeled zwitterions and β-CD. Hence, the contaminants upon the membrane surface can be simply eliminated by water washing under UV light irradiation. The antifouling membrane can be regenerated via immersing the reacquired β-CD_2/10/PES membrane into fresh azobenzene labeled zwitterions solution again.

Combination of Zinc Oxide Photocatalysis with Membrane Filtration for Surface Water Disinfection

Increase water usage has led to its deterioration. Pollutants are easily found in the aquatic environment and treatment techniques must keep improving to meet the current needs and future demands. Membranes are attractive for water treatment, but limitations like fouling and the highly concentrate produced affect their performance. Combining membrane filtration with photocatalysis provides the opportunity to integrate a self-cleaning step during membrane filtration. In this work, we studied two simple and efficient approaches to combine membrane filtration with zinc oxide nanoparticles (using the catalyst in suspension and immobilized) activated by light emitting diodes (LED) emitting light at 365 nm. Both systems were used to test the disinfection efficiency in real surface water, compared in terms of catalyst concentration in the permeate stream (below the limit of detection) and its recovery after filtration (higher that 74%). The system's capability to retain and inactivate target bacteria (total coliforms and E. coli) in the retentate stream was tested with samples of real surface water. The results obtained show that both configurations led to an improved performance in comparison to the membrane treatment alone with a higher retention of the bacteria (not detected in the permeate samples) and higher treatment of the retentate. For the modified membranes, different catalyst concentrations and thermal treatments were tested. The performance of all the processes was evaluated in terms of the level of treatment achieved and the permeate flux. All the modified membranes showed an efficient retention of the target bacteria from surface water, with higher performances than the unmodified membrane (96.2% for total coliforms and 94.9% for E. coli). Remarkable retention and treatment of the retentate was achieved using a membrane modified with a catalyst load of 125 mg subject during two hours to a thermal treatment of 300 °C. This modification has a performance comparable to the system with the same catalyst load in suspension. During operation, the permeate flux reduction is lower with the modified membranes which could lead to longer operation times without the need of further cleaning or replacement. The combined system, ceramic membranes modified with zinc oxide and UV-A LEDs proved to be effective to retain and disinfect water quality indicator bacteria present in real surface water matrices.

Electrically conductive TiO2/CB/PVDF membranes for synchronous cross-flow filtration and solar photoelectrocatalysis

Combining photocatalysis (PC) and membrane filtration (MF) has emerged as an attractive technology for water purification, however, the water purification efficiency and membrane fouling are still challenging. Herein, we report a novel photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) membrane mediated by a ternary polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-carbon black (CB)-TiO₂ composite conductive membrane synthesized by a phase inversion method assisted by the mixed surfactants of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The resultant electrically conductive TiO₂/CB/PVDF membrane features a homogeneous surface with obvious pore size of 20-150 nm, a thickness ∼116 μm, and an average resistivity as low as ∼3.165 Ω∙m. The cooperation of PVP and SDS surfactants dramatically improves the organic-inorganic interactions and thus eventually enhances the porosity, stability of porous structure, mechanical stability, and conductivity and electrochemical properties of the hybrid membrane. Upon the solvent evaperation of the wellblended casting solution and the phase inversion, TiO₂/CB preferentially exist on the surface of PVDF membrane, enabling the efficient PEC degradation of organic pollutants. The synergistic coupling of TiO₂ and CB in PVDF membrane results in efficient PEC properties with bi-functional membrane antifouling and enhanced water purification in azo dyes decolorization under the stationary mode and in our lab-made continuous cross-flow PEC system, superior to those by photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. The developed synchronous MF and PEC system mediated by the conductive TiO₂/CB/PVDF membrane proves to a feasible route to improving the self-cleaning properties of the polymer membrane while simultaneously increasing the water decontaminating efficiency.

Antibiofouling Characteristics and Mechanisms in an Anammox Membrane Bioreactor Based on an Optimized Photocatalytic Technology─Photocatalytic Optical Fibers

As an ecofriendly photocatalytic antifouling technology for membrane bioreactors (MBRs), photocatalytic optical fibers (POFs) can decrease the replacement cost of modified membranes and prevent the proliferation of photosynthetic bacteria caused by direct light illumination. Here, POFs were applied in situ in an anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) MBR for membrane biofouling control. Compared with the control MBR without POFs treatment, the average fouling cycle of the POFs-loaded MBR was extended by 137%, and the energy consumption caused by membrane fouling was saved by 18%. In the antibiofouling process, ^•OH was the key photocatalytic reactive species. On the fouled POFs-loaded membranes, the membrane-adhered foulant was significantly decreased by photocatalytic degradation of the proteins, polysaccharides and humic substances in the microbial metabolites. The membrane-attached bacteria were inactivated by the POFs by the mechanisms of cell-membrane destruction and cell-membrane permeabilization, which caused bacterial necrosis and apoptosis, respectively. Moreover, the total nitrogen-removal efficiencies of the two MBRs were maintained at 85.3-90.4%, and the abundance of anammox bacteria increased from 21.3% to 46.2% during the 202 days of operation, indicating an efficient anammox process with excellent nitrogen-removal performance, biomass retention, and anammox bacteria enrichment. The systematic insights into the antibiofouling performance and mechanisms of POFs in anammox MBRs will promote application and development of membrane-filtration technology in wastewater treatment using environmentally friendly and energy-efficient antifouling strategies.

Surfactant-Modified CdS/CdCO3 Composite Photocatalyst Morphology Enhances Visible-Light-Driven Cr(VI) Reduction Performance

The surfactant modification of catalyst morphology is considered as an effective method to improve photocatalytic performance. In this work, the visible-light-driven composite photocatalyst was obtained by growing CdS nanoparticles in the cubic crystal structure of CdCO₃, which, after surfactant modification, led to the formation of CdCO₃ elliptical spheres. This reasonable composite-structure-modification design effectively increased the specific surface area, fully exposing the catalytic-activity check point. Cd²⁺ from CdCO₃ can enter the CdS crystal structure to generate lattice distortion and form hole traps, which productively promoted the separation and transfer of CdS photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The prepared 5-CdS/CdCO₃@SDS exhibited excellent Cr(VI) photocatalytic activity with a reduction efficiency of 86.9% within 30 min, and the reduction rate was 0.0675 min^-1, which was 15.57 and 14.46 times that of CdS and CdCO₃, respectively. Finally, the main active substances during the reduction process, the photogenerated charge transfer pathways related to heterojunctions and the catalytic mechanism were proposed and analyzed.

Research progress in external field intensification of forward osmosis process for water treatment: A critical review

Forward osmosis (FO) is an emerging permeation-driven membrane technology that manifests advantages of low energy consumption, low operating pressure, and uncomplicated engineering compared to conventional membrane processes. The key issues that need to be addressed in FO are membrane fouling, concentration polarization (CP) and reverse solute diffusion (RSD). They can lead to problems about loss of draw solutes and reduced membrane lifetime, which not only affect the water treatment effectiveness of FO membranes, but also increase the economic cost. Current research has focused on FO membrane preparation and modification strategies, as well as on the selection of draw solutions. Unfortunately, these intrinsic solutions had limited success in unraveling these phenomena. In this paper, we provide a brief review of the current state of research on existing external field-assisted FO systems (including electric-, pressure-, magnetic-, ultrasonic-, light- and flow-assisted FO system), analyze their mitigation mechanisms for the above key problems, and explore potential research directions to aid in the further development of FO systems. This review aims to reveal the feasibility of the development of external field-assisted FO technology to achieve a more economical and efficient FO treatment process.

Highly Efficient Oxygen-Activated Self-Cleaning Membranes Prepared by Grafting a Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Catalyst

In this study, an efficient oxygen-activated self-cleaning membrane was successfully prepared by grafting a metal-organic framework-devised catalyst (CuNi-C) onto a membrane surface, resulting in enhanced filtration performance and self-cleaning capability based on oxygen activation under mild conditions. The pore features, surface roughness, and surface hydrophilicity of the prepared membrane were analyzed and used to determine the causes of the enhanced filtration performance; the results showed that an increase in the porosity and surface roughness enhanced the permeate flux, and enhanced adsorption capacity and surface hydrophobicity improved the membrane removal efficiency. The self-cleaning mechanism was elucidated by identifying the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and detecting catalytic element valences. The results revealed that zero-valent Cu embedded into the membrane surface effectively activated natural dissolved oxygen (DO) to generate ROS that degraded organic pollutants. In this study, catalytic oxidation with DO as the oxidant was successively integrated with membrane separation to prevent membrane fouling, providing a novel direction for the development of multifunctional membranes.

A Bipolar CdS/Pd Photocatalytic Membrane for Selective Segregation of Reduction and Oxidation Processes

A photocatalytically active bipolar membrane consisting of a CdS photocatalyst and Pd electrocatalyst has been constructed to carry out environmentally relevant oxidation and reduction processes. The ion exchange property of a bipolar membrane (BPM) has allowed us to load the CdS photocatalyst on one side and Pd electrocatalyst on the other side. By inserting the photocatalytic BPM-CdS/Pd membrane between the two compartments of an H-cell, we can separate the reduction and oxidation processes. Following visible light excitation of CdS in the BPM-CdS/Pd membrane, we can induce vectorial electron transfer from CdS to Pd and to an electron acceptor (4-nitrophenol). The holes generated at CdS are scavenged by ethanol or 4-chlorophenol. The photocatalytic reduction rate dependence on the Pd loading in the membrane as well as its effect on modulating the rates of electron and hole transfer processes are discussed. The design of a semiconductor and metal loaded membrane paves the way for improving selectivity and efficiency of photocatalytic processes.

Free-standing hybrid film for separation of dye pollutant with self-cleaning ability under visible light

The development of low cost and environmental-friendly materials has long been an ambition for effective removal of dye pollutants in complex water environments. In this study, a free-standing separation film of bacterial cellulose reinforced/functionalized by graphitic phase carbon nitride is developed by a facile suction filtration strategy, of which the former is precoated by polypyrrole, and the latter is pre-doped by oxygen to endow the as-obtained film an enhanced photocatalytic performance and self-cleaning ability. The as-obtained film exhibits a high tensile stress of 51.8 ± 1.1 MPa, and a high resistance to cold, heat, acid and alkali. For typical dyes of methylene blue and rhodamine B, a high dye rejection rate of 99.9% at 138 L/m²•h•bar feed flux is obtained by the as-obtained film. Even at a salt concentration higher than 5%, it still maintained high dye removal rates and achieves effective separation of dye and salt. Simultaneously, a high dye photocatalytic degradation of the composite films rates up to 98% in only 90 min, and a high self-cleaning ability demonstrated by recovery of flux after light treatment in cyclic tests. The density functional theory calculation validates the beneficial effects of improved light response range and separated photogenerated electron/holes for the effective degradation of dyes by oxygen-doped carbon nitride coupled with one-dimensional polypyrrole chains. Overall, this study proposes a new direction for the separation of dye pollutants with a high visible-light self-cleaning capacity by structural tailoring of bacterial cellulose with carbon nitride.

Designing and fabricating a CdS QDs/Bi2MoO6 monolayer S-scheme heterojunction for highly efficient photocatalytic C2H4 degradation under visible light

Achieving efficient photocatalytic degradation of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under sun-light is still a significant challenge for environmental protection. The S-scheme heterojunction with its unique charge migration route, high charge separation rate and strong redox ability, has great potential. However, how to regulate interfacial charge transfer of the S-scheme heterojunction is of significant importance. Here, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were first conducted and predicted that an S-scheme heterojunction could be formed in the CdS quantum dots/Bi₂MoO₆ monolayer system. Subsequently, this novel heterojunction is constructed by in-situ hydrothermal synthesis of CdS quantum dots on monolayer Bi₂MoO₆. Under visible-light, this novel S-scheme system gives a high-efficiency photocatalytic degradation rate (6.04 × 10^-2 min^-1) towards C₂H₄, which is 30.3 times higher than that of pure CdS (1.99 × 10^-3 min^-1) and 41.7 times higher than pure Bi₂MoO₆ (1.45 × 10^-3 min^-1). Strong evidence for the S-scheme charge transfer path is provided by in-situ XPS, PL, TRPL and EPR.

Surface-Encapsulated Bismuth Molybdate-Layered Silicate Hybrids as Sorbents for Photocatalytic Filtration Membranes

Groundwater is being depleted globally at an average rate of more than one meter per year, during a period when more than a quarter of the human population has no access to potable water. Aside from overexploitation, freshwater security is also threatened by climate change and chemical pollution. The contamination of surface and groundwater by industrial substances is also undermining the vitality of ecosystems. It was previously shown that {100}-faceted Bi2MoO6-Laponite hybrids effectively bind and photodegrade molecular species, aiding in the decontamination of water. In this study, the encapsulation of Bi2MoO6-Laponite particles with the polymers butyl acrylate and styrene further enhanced adsorption of methylene blue by 31.4%, with a specific adsorption capacity of 192 μmol/g. The polymer-particle composites were deposited to form membranes and their efficacies in water filtration and photodegradation were examined. Among the different surface modifications examined, the highest dye sorption was obtained by butyl acrylate and styrene (3:2) with a 5 mol % cross-linker. This study provides a method for enhancing the molecular adsorption of composite particles used in membranes capable of multiple cycles of adsorption and photodegradation, advancing the application of such systems to water filtration.

Review of New Approaches for Fouling Mitigation in Membrane Separation Processes in Water Treatment Applications

This review investigates antifouling agents used in the process of membrane separation (MS), in reverse osmosis (RO), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), microfiltration (MF), membrane distillation (MD), and membrane bioreactors (MBR), and clarifies the fouling mechanism. Membrane fouling is an incomplete substance formed on the membrane surface, which will quickly reduce the permeation flux and damage the membrane. Foulant is colloidal matter: organic matter (humic acid, protein, carbohydrate, nano/microplastics), inorganic matter (clay such as potassium montmorillonite, silica salt, metal oxide, etc.), and biological matter (viruses, bacteria and microorganisms adhering to the surface of the membrane in the case of nutrients) The stability and performance of the tested nanometric membranes, as well as the mitigation of pollution assisted by electricity and the cleaning and repair of membranes, are reported. Physical, chemical, physico-chemical, and biological methods for cleaning membranes. Biologically induced biofilm dispersion effectively controls fouling. Dynamic changes in membrane foulants during long-term operation are critical to the development and implementation of fouling control methods. Membrane fouling control strategies show that improving membrane performance is not only the end goal, but new ideas and new technologies for membrane cleaning and repair need to be explored and developed in order to develop future applications.

Predicting kinetics of water-rich permeate flux through photocatalytic mesh under visible light illumination

Membrane-based separation technologies are attractive to remediating unconventional water sources, including brackish, industrial, and municipal wastewater, due to their versatility and relatively high energy efficiency. However, membrane fouling by dissolved or suspended organic substances remains a primary challenge which can result in an irreversible decline of the permeate flux. To overcome this, membranes have been incorporated with photocatalytic materials that can degrade these organic substances deposited on the surface upon light illumination. While such photocatalytic membranes have demonstrated that they can recover their inherent permeability, less information is known about the effect of photocatalysis on the kinetics of the permeate flux. In this work, a photocatalytic mesh that can selectively permeate water while repelling oil was fabricated by coating a mixture of nitrogen-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) and perfluorosilane-grafted SiO2 (F-SiO2) nanoparticles on a stainless steel mesh. Utilizing the photocatalytic mesh, the time-dependent evolution of the water-rich permeate flux as a result of photocatalytic degradation of the oil was studied under the visible light illumination. A mathematical model was developed that can relate the photocatalytic degradation of the organic substances deposited on a mesh surface to the evolution of the permeate flux. This model was established by integrating the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics for photocatalysis and the Cassie-Baxter wettability analysis on a chemically heterogeneous mesh surface into a permeate flux relation. Consequently, the time-dependent water-rich permeate flux values are compared with those predicted by using the model. It is found that the model can predict the evolution of the water-rich permeate flux with a goodness of fit of 0.92.

Smart Self-Cleaning Membrane via the Blending of an Upper Critical Solution Temperature Diblock Copolymer with PVDF

Poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(imidazoled glycidyl methacrylate-co-diethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate) (PTFEMA-b-P(iGMA-co-MEO₂MA)) containing an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) polymer chain was prepared and blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to produce a thermoresponsive membrane with smart self-cleaning performance. The successful preparation of the membrane was demonstrated by attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy characterization. The membrane shows UCST performance, and its flux changes with the filtrate temperature as the UCST polymer chain stretches out and contracts in response to various temperatures. In addition, the UCST polymer chain can disrupt the foulant and push it away from the membrane when the temperature is above the UCST and thus enables membranes to exhibit a smart self-cleaning behavior. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first report of a smart self-cleaning membrane based on the blending of a diblock copolymer containing a UCST polymer chain with PVDF.
