Introducing Siloxane-Terminated Side Chains in Small Molecular Donors for All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells: Modulated Molecular Orientation and Enhanced Efficiency

Heterogeneous Nucleating Agent for High-Boiling-Point Nonhalogenated Solvent-Processed Organic Solar Cells and Modules

High-boiling-point nonhalogenated solvents are superior solvents to produce large-area organic solar cells (OSCs) in industry because of their wide processing window and low toxicity; while, these solvents with slow evaporation kinetics will lead excessive aggregation of state-of-the-art small molecule acceptors (e.g. L8-BO), delivering serious efficiency losses. Here, a heterogeneous nucleating agent strategy is developed by grafting oligo (ethylene glycol) side-chains on L8-BO (BTO-BO). The formation energy of the obtained BTO-BO; while, changing from liquid in a solvent to a crystalline phase, is lower than that of L8-BO irrespective of the solvent type. When BTO-BO is added as the third component into the active layer (e.g. PM6:L8-BO), it easily assembles to form numerous seed crystals, which serve as nucleation sites to trigger heterogeneous nucleation and increase nucleation density of L8-BO through strong hydrogen bonding interactions even in high-boiling-point nonhalogenated solvents. Therefore, it can effectively suppress excessive aggregation during growth, achieving ideal phase-separation active layer with small domain sizes and high crystallinity. The resultant toluene-processed OSCs exhibit a record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.42% (certificated 19.12%) with excellent operational stability. The strategy also has superior advantages in large-scale devices, showing a 15.03-cm2 module with a record PCE of 16.35% (certificated 15.97%).

Polymerized-Small-Molecule Acceptors Featuring Siloxane-Terminated Side Chains for Mechanically Robust All-Polymer Solar Cells

Flexible and stretchable organic solar cells (OSCs) show great promise in wearable and stretchable electronic applications. However, current high-performance OSCs consisting of polymer donors (PDs) and small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) face significant challenges in achieving both high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and excellent stretch-ability. In this study, we synthesized a new polymerized-small-molecule acceptor (P-SMA) PY-SiO featuring siloxane-terminated side chains and compared its photovoltaic and mechanical performance to that of the reference PY-EH with ethylhexyl-terminated side chains. We found that the incorporation of siloxane-terminated side chains in PY-SiO enhanced the molecular aggregation and charge transport, leading to an optimized film morphology. The resultant of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) based on PBDB-T/PY-SiO showed a higher PCE of 12.04% than the PY-EH-based one (10.85%). Furthermore, the siloxane-terminated side chains also increased the interchain distance and provided a larger free volume for chain rotation and reconfiguration, resulting in a higher film crack-onset strain (COS: 18.32% for PBDB-T/PY-SiO vs 11.15% for PBDB-T/PY-EH). Additionally, the PY-SiO-based stretchable all-PSCs exhibited an impressive PCE of 9.8% and retained >70% of its original PCE even under a substantial 20% strain, exceeding the performance of the PY-EH-based stretchable all-PSCs. Our result suggests the great potential of the siloxane-terminated side chain for achieving high-performance and stretchable OSCs.

Polymer Donor with a Simple Skeleton and Minor Siloxane Decoration Enables 19% Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells

Development of polymer donors with simple chemical structure and low cost is of great importance for commercial application of organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, side-chain random copolymer PMQ-Si605 with a simply 6,7-difluoro-3-methylquinoxaline-thiophene backbone and 5% siloxane decoration of side chain is synthesized in comparison with its alternating copolymer PTQ11. Relative to molecular weight (Mn) of 28.3 kg mol-1 for PTQ11, the random copolymer PMQ-Si605 with minor siloxane decoration is beneficial for achieving higher Mn up to 51.1 kg mol-1. In addition, PMQ-Si605 can show stronger aggregation ability and faster charge mobility as well as more efficient exciton dissociation in active layer as revealed by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. With L8-BO-F as acceptor, its PMQ-Si605 based OSCs display power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.08%, much higher than 16.21% for PTQ11 based devices. With another acceptor BTP-H2 to optimize the photovoltaic performance of PMQ-Si605, further elevated PCEs of 18.50% and 19.15% can be achieved with the binary and ternary OSCs, respectively. Furthermore, PMQ-Si605 based active layers are suitable for processing in high humidity air, an important factor for massive production of OSCs. Therefore, the siloxane decoration on polymer donors is promising, affording PMQ-Si605 as a high-performing and low cost candidate.

Organic Photovoltaics Utilizing Small-Molecule Donors and Y-Series Nonfullerene Acceptors

The emerging Y-series nonfullerene acceptors (Y-NFA) has prompted the rapid progress of power conversion efficiency (PCE) of all-small-molecule organic solar cells (ASM-OSCs) from around 12% to 17%. The excellent PCE improvement benefits from not only the outstanding properties of Y-series acceptors but also the successful development of small-molecule donors. The short-circuit current density, fill factor, and nonradiative recombination are all optimized to the unprecedented values, providing a scenery that is obviously different from the ITIC-series based ASM-OSCs. In this review, OSCs utilizing small-molecule donors and Y-NFA are summarized and classified in order to provide an up-to-date development overview and give an insight on structure-property correlation. Then, the characteristics of bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) formation of ASM-OSCs are discussed and compared with that of polymer-based OSCs. Finally, the challenges and outlook on designing ground-breaking small-molecule donor and forming an ideal BHJ morphology are discussed.

Progress and Future Potential of All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells Based on the Benzodithiophene Donor Material

Organic solar cells have obtained a prodigious amount of attention in photovoltaic research due to their unique features of light weight, low cost, eco-friendliness, and semitransparency. A rising trend in this field is the development of all-small-molecules organic solar cells (ASM-OSCs) due to their merits of excellent batch-to-batch reproducibility, well-defined structures, and simple purification. Among the numerous organic photovoltaic (OPV) materials, benzodithiophene (BDT)-based small molecules have come to the fore in achieving outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) and breaking the 17% efficiency barrier in single-junction OPV devices, indicating the significant potential of this class of materials in commercial photovoltaic applications. This review specially focuses on up-to-date information about improvements in BDT-based ASM-OSCs since 2011 and provides an outlook on the most significant challenges that remain in the field. We believe there will be more exciting BDT-based photovoltaic materials and devices developed in the near future.

Facile Strategy for Third Component Optimization in Wide-Band-Gap π-Conjugated Polymer Donor-Based Efficient Ternary All-Polymer Solar Cells

Emerging organic solar cells based on a ternary strategy is one of the most effective methods for improving the blend film morphology, absorption ability, and device performances. On the other hand, this strategy has had very limited success in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) because of the scarcity of new polymers and the challenges faced during third component optimization. Herein, highly efficient ternary all-PSCs were developed from siloxane-functionalized side chains with a wide-band-gap (E_g) polymer, Si-BDT, which is blended with a medium and ultra-narrow E_g polymer donor and acceptor, PTB7-Th, and DCNBT-TPIC. An impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.45% was achieved in the ternary all-PSCs [PTB7-Th(0.6):Si-BDT(0.4):DCNBT-TPIC(0.6)] with the addition of 0.4 wt equivalent Si-BDT into binary all-PSCs [PTB7-Th(1):DCNBT-TPIC(0.6) PCE of 10.11%]. In contrast, the binary all-PSCs with a Si-BDT(1):DCNBT-TPIC(0.6) active layer only exhibited a good PCE of 9.92%. More importantly, the siloxane-functionalized side chains increase the light-absorption ability, carrier mobility, blend miscibility, and film morphology in ternary devices compared to those of the binary devices. Hence, exciton dissociation, charge carrier transport, and suppressed recombination properties were facilitated. In the presence of Si-BDT, both binary and ternary all-PSCs PCEs are significantly improved. Indeed, 13.45% PCE is one of the best values reported for all-PSCs except for those based on polymerized small molecule acceptors. In addition, the ternary all-PSCs showed excellent environmental and thermal stabilities with 95 and 84% of the initial PCE retained after 900 and 500 h, respectively. These results offer effective device engineering, providing a new avenue for improving the device performance in ternary all-PSCs.
