Metal Cation-Responsive and Excitation-Dependent Nontraditional Multicolor Fluorescent Hydrogels for Multidimensional Information Encryption

Interfacial Wrinkling Structures Based on a Double Cross-Linking Strategy Enable a Dual-Mode Optical Information Encryption

Surface wrinkling structures based on a bilayer system are widely employed in storing and encrypting specific optical information. However, constructing a stable wrinkling structure with high-level security remains an extensive challenge due to the delamination issue between the skin layer and the substrate. Herein, a double cross-linking strategy is introduced between a hydrogel layer doped with fluorescent molecules and polydimethylsiloxane to establish a stable interfacial wrinkling structure with dual-mode functionality, in which the light reflection of the wrinkles and fluorescence intensity of fluorescent molecules can be simultaneously regulated by the modulus ratio between the two layers. The spontaneous wrinkling structures with a physically unclonable function can enhance the photoluminescence emission intensity of the wrinkling area under ultraviolet radiation. Meanwhile, the skin layer constructed of acrylamide and acrylic acid copolymer protects the interfacial wrinkling patterns from the loss of a detailed structure for authentication due to external damage. The stable interfacial wrinkling structures with fluorescence can find potential applications in the fields of information storage and encryption.

A thermo-responsive hydrogel for body temperature-induced spontaneous information decryption and self-encryption

A thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel, exhibiting an interesting phenomenon of an opaque-transparent-opaque transition in the successive processes of heating and cooling, is reported. It is fabricated by means of both the porogenic effect of hydroxypropyl cellulose and the cononsolvency effect of PNIPAM in a mixed solvent of dimethyl sulfoxide and water. After being mildly triggered by body temperature, the hydrogel is used to spontaneously decrypt the quick response code within 4 min and then autonomously encrypts the code again within 10 min at room temperature. The mechanism for the transient transparency of hydrogels during the quenching process has been elucidated.

Multiple hydrogen-bonding induced nonconventional red fluorescence emission in hydrogels

The development of unconventional long-wavelength fluorescent polymer hydrogels without using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or extended π-conjugation is a fundamental challenge in luminescent materials owing to a lack of understanding regarding the spatial interactions induced inherent clustering-triggered emission under water-rich conditions. Inspired by the color change of protein astaxanthin as a result of heat-induced denaturation, we propose a thermodynamically driven strategy to develop red fluorescence (~610 nm) by boiling multiple hydrogen-bonded poly(N-acryloylsemicarbazide) hydrogels in a water bath. We reveal that thermodynamically driven conformational changes of polymer chains from isolated hydrogen bonding donor-acceptor structures to through-space interaction structures induce intrinsic fluorescence shifts from blue to red during clustering-triggered emission. The proposed multiple hydrogen-bonding supramolecular hydrogel shows good fluorescence stability, mechanical robustness, and 3D printability for customizable shaping. We provide a viable method to prepare nonconventional long-wavelength fluorescent hydrogels towards soft fluorescent devices without initially introducing any fluorescent components.

Probing the influence of crosslinkers on the properties, response, and degradation of enzymatic hydrogels for electrochemical glucose biosensing through fluorescence analysis

Drop-cast crosslinked hydrogels are a common platform for enzymatic electrochemical biosensors. Despite the widespread use of these complex systems, there are still several questions about how their physicochemical properties affect their performance, stability, and reproducibility. In this work, first-generation faradaic biosensors composed of glucose oxidase and branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) are prepared using either glutaraldehyde (GA) or ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDGE) as crosslinkers. While EGDGE gels present an increasing electrochemical response with increasing crosslinker concentration, the current of GA gels decreases at high crosslinker concentration probably due to the hampered diffusion on tightly networked gels. We compared different strategies to use fluorescence microscopy to gain insight into the gel structure either by labeling the gel components with fluorophores or taking advantage of the intrinsic fluorescence of the imines formed upon crosslinking with GA. By monitoring the fluorescence of the crosslinking bonds and the electrochemical response, we demonstrate that hydrolysis, a common hydrogel degradation mechanism, is not responsible for the loss of electrical current over time in gels prepared with glutaraldehyde. Most hydrogel-based electrochemical biosensor studies do not perform specific experiments to determine the cause of the degradation and instead just infer it from the dependence of the current on the preparation conditions (most commonly concentrations). We show that, by taking advantage of several analytical techniques, it is possible to gain more knowledge about the degradation mechanisms and design better enzymatic biosensors.

In Situ Fabrication of Photoluminescent Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework-Functionalized Ca (II) Hydrogel Film for the Tetracyclines Visual Sensor and Information Security

A facilely in situ fabricated hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) hydrogel film with perfect photoluminescent performance was designed for visual sensing of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) and information security. Luminescent HOF (MA-IPA) was combined with sodium alginate (SA) through hydrogen bonding actions and electrostatic interactions, then cross-linked with Ca2+ ions to form HOF hydrogel film (Ca@MA-IPA@SA). The HOF hydrogel film exhibited exceptional mechanical robustness along with stable blue fluorescence and ultralong green phosphorescence. After exposure to TCs, Ca2+ was combined with TCs to generate a new green fluorescence exciplex (TC-Ca2+) in hydrogel films. Due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer, the fluorescence of MA-IPA was quenched, and the fluorescent color of the HOF hydrogel film was changed from blue to green. This dichromatic fluorescent response is convenient for the visual and rapid detection of TCs. The detection limits of tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline (CTC) were 5.1, 7.7, and 32.7 ng mL-1, respectively. Importantly, this hydrogel sensing platform was free of tedious operation and enabled the ultrasensitive and selective detection of TCs within 6 min. It has been successfully applied to TC detection in pork and milk samples. Based on the stable photoluminescence performance of HOF hydrogel films and fluorescent-responsive properties to TCs, two types of anticounterfeiting arrays were fabricated for information encryption and decryption. This work provides a novel approach for on-site detection of TCs and offers valuable insights into information security.

Stimulus-responsive polymer materials toward multi-mode and multi-level information anti-counterfeiting: recent advances and future challenges

Information storage and security is one of the perennial hot issues in society, while the further advancements of related chemical anti-counterfeiting systems remain a formidable challenge. As emerging anti-counterfeiting materials, stimulus-responsive polymers (SRPs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique stimulus-responsiveness and charming discoloration performance. At the same time, single-channel decryption technology with low-security levels has been unable to effectively prevent information from being stolen or mimicked. As a result, it would be of great significance to develop SRPs with multi-mode and multi-level anti-counterfeiting characteristics. This study summarizes the latest achievements in advance anti-counterfeiting strategies based on SRPs, including multi-mode anti-counterfeiting (static information) and multi-level anti-counterfeiting (dynamic information). In addition, the promising applications of such materials in anti-counterfeiting labels, identification platforms, intelligent displays, and others are briefly reviewed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field are discussed. This review serves as a useful resource for manipulating SRP-based anti-counterfeiting materials and creating cutting-edge information security and encryption systems.

Amphiphilic Polyurethane with Cluster-Induced Emission for Multichannel Bioimaging in Living Cell Systems

The development of single-component materials with low cytotoxicity and multichannel fluorescence imaging capability is a research hotspot. In the present work, highly electron-deficient pyrazine monomers were covalently connected into a polyurethane backbone using addition polymerization with terminal poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether units containing a high density of electron pairs. Thereby, an amphiphilic polyurethane-pyrazine (PUP) derivative has been synthesized. The polymer displays cluster-induced emission through compact inter- and/or intramolecular noncovalent interactions and extensive through-space electron coupling and delocalization. Molecular rigidity facilitates red-shifted emission. Based on hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions and excitation dependence emission at low concentrations, PUP has been self-assembled into fluorescent nanoparticles (PUP NPs) without additional surfactant. PUP NPs have been used for cellular multicolor imaging to provide a variety of switchable colors on demand. This work provides a simple molecular design for environmentally sustainable, luminescent materials with excellent photophysical properties, biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and color modulation.

A Novel Ion Species- and Ion Concentration-Dependent Anti-Counterfeiting Based on Ratiometric Fluorescence Sensing of CDs@MOF-Nanofibrous Films

Traditional fluorescent anti-counterfeiting labels based on "on-off" fluorescence can be easily cloned. It is important to explore advanced anti-counterfeiting fluorescent labels with high-level security. Here, a pioneering ion species- and ion concentration-dependent anti-counterfeiting technique is developed. By successive loading Cu2+ -sensitive yellow emitted carbon dots (Y-CDs) and Cu2+ non-sensitive blue emitted carbon dots (B-CDs) into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and followed by electrospinning, the B&Y-CDs@MOF-nanofibrous films are prepared. The results show that the use of MOF not only avoids the fluorescence quenching of CDs but also improves the fluorescence stability. The fluorescence Cu2+ -sensitivity of the CDs@MOF-nanofibrous films can be regulated by polymer coating or lamination. The fluorescent label consisting of different Cu2+ -sensitivity films will show Cu2+ concentration-dependent decryption information. Only at a specific ion species and concentration (Cu2+ solution of 40-90 µm), the true information can be read out. Less or more concentration (<40 or >90 µm) will lead to false information. The identification of the real information depends on both the species and the concentration. After Cu2+ treatment, the fluorescence of the label can be recovered by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium (EDTA-2Na) for further recycling. This work will open up a new door for designing high-level fluorescent anti-counterfeiting labels.

Pyrazine as a More Efficient Luminophore than Benzene for Producing Red-Shifted and Enhanced Photoluminescence

The development of organic photoluminescent (PL) materials with red-shifted and enhanced emissions is beneficial to promoting their applications. Luminescent materials based on aromatic heterocycles (e.g., pyrazine) usually have red-shifted and enhanced photoluminescence compared with phenyl-based luminescent materials. In this work, the photoluminescence behaviors of pyrazine and its derivatives (o-dichloro-, o-dicyano-, and dichlorodicyano-substituted) are compared with those of benzene and its derivatives. All compounds exhibit fluorescence emissions ranging from blue to yellow, and the fluorescence emissions of pyrazinyl compounds are more red-shifted than those of phenyl compounds. Except for the o-dicyano-substituted compound, pyrazinyl compounds exhibit stronger fluorescence emissions than corresponding phenyl compounds in both pure substances and ethanol solutions. In addition, both 5,6-dichloro-2,3-dicyanopyrazine (P4) and 4,5-dichloro-1,2-dicyanobenzene (B4) exhibit room temperature phosphorescence, and the maximum delayed emission wavelength is red-shifted from 575 nm of B4 to 637 nm of P4. The energy gaps between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the monomers of pyrazinyl compounds are reduced by 0.07-1.37 eV compared with the monomers of phenyl compounds, which is the fundamental reason for the red-shifted emissions of the pyrazinyl compounds. Moreover, compared to B4, the smaller molecular spacing in the P4 crystal structure facilitates interlayer electron transfer and hence the formation of more extended through-space conjugation, resulting in the red-shifted emission of P4. This work proves that pyrazine is a more efficient luminophore than benzene for constructing PL compounds with longer emission wavelengths and higher quantum yields, which are important in guiding the design and preparation of organic PL materials.

Multifunctional Organohydrogels for pH-Responsive Fluorescent and Electrostimulus Writing

Hydrogels have attracted widespread attention in anticounterfeiting due to their unique physical/chemical properties and designability. However, hydrogels' poor mechanical properties and sluggish response to chemical stimuli pose challenges for their wide application. A fluorescent tough organohydrogel capable of freeform writing of information is reported in this work. By incorporation of the fluorescent monomer 7-methylacryloxy-4-methylcoumarin into the polyacrylamide network in a covalently cross-linked manner while intertwining with the carboxymethyl cellulose sodium network, a fluorescent tough organohydrogel with a dual-network structure is prepared. The organohydrogel shows acid-base-mediated adjustable fluorescence through the transformation of fluorescent monomers. Ion printing and electrical stimulation design achieved free information storage and encryption. In addition, the prepared organohydrogel has good antifreezing properties and can be encrypted and decrypted at subzero temperatures. The encrypted information in the organohydrogel can be read only after UV-light irradiation. These patterned fluorescent organohydrogels should find applications in protected message displays for improved information security.

Hydrogen-Bonding-Driven Nontraditional Photoluminescence of a β-Enamino Ester

Nontraditional luminogens (NTLs) do not contain any conventional chromophores (large π-conjugated structures), but they do show intrinsic photoluminescence. To achieve photoluminescence from NTLs, it is necessary to increase the extent of through-space conjugation (TSC) and suppress nonradiative decay. Incorporating strong physical interactions such as hydrogen bonding is an effective strategy to achieve this. In this work, we carried out comparative studies on the photoluminescence behaviors of two β-enamino esters with similar chemical structures, namely methyl 3-aminocrotonate (MAC) and methyl (E)-3-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-2-butenoate (MPB). MAC crystal emits blue fluorescence under UV irradiation. The critical cluster concentration of MAC in ethanol solutions was determined by studying the relationship between the photoluminescence intensity (UV-visible absorbance) and concentration. Furthermore, MAC exhibits solvatochromism, and its emission wavelength redshifts as the solvent polarity increases. On the contrary, MPB is non-emissive in both solid state and solutions. Crystal structures and theoretical calculation prove that strong inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds lead to the formation of large amounts of TSC of MAC molecules in aggregated states. No hydrogen bonds and thus no effective TSC can be formed between or within MPB molecules, and this is the reason for its non-emissive nature. This work provides a deeper understanding of how hydrogen bonding contributes to the luminescence of NTLs.

Toughening Weak Polyampholyte Hydrogels with Weak Chain Entanglements via a Secondary Equilibrium Approach

Polyampholyte (PA) hydrogels are randomly copolymerized from anionic and cationic monomers, showing good mechanical properties owing to the existence of numerous ionic bonds in the networks. However, relatively tough PA gels can be synthesized successfully only at high monomer concentrations (C_M), where relatively strong chain entanglements exist to stabilize the primary supramolecular networks. This study aims to toughen weak PA gels with relatively weak primary topological entanglements (at relatively low C_M) via a secondary equilibrium approach. According to this approach, an as-prepared PA gel is first dialyzed in a FeCl₃ solution to reach a swelling equilibrium and then dialyzed in sufficient deionized water to remove excess free ions to achieve a new equilibrium, resulting in the modified PA gels. It is proved that the modified PA gels are eventually constructed by both ionic and metal coordination bonds, which could synergistically enhance the chain interactions and enable the network toughening. Systematic studies indicate that both C_M and FeCl₃ concentration (CFeCl3) influence the enhancement effectiveness of the modified PA gels, although all the gels could be dramatically enhanced. The mechanical properties of the modified PA gel could be optimized at C_M = 2.0 M and CFeCl3 = 0.3 M, where the Young's modulus, tensile fracture strength, and work of tension are improved by 1800%, 600%, and 820%, respectively, comparing to these of the original PA gel. By selecting a different PA gel system and diverse metal ions (i.e., Al³⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺), we further prove that the proposed approach is generally appliable. A theoretical model is used to understand the toughening mechanism. This work well extends the simple yet general approach for the toughening of weak PA gels with relatively weak chain entanglements.

Bio-Inspired Electro-Thermal-Hygro Responsive Rewritable Systems with Temporal/Spatial Control for Environment-Interactive Information Display

Utilization of rewritable luminescent materials for secure information storage and delivery has long been envisaged to reduce the cost and environmental wastes. However, it remains challenging to realize a temporally/spatially controlled display of the written information, which is crucial for secure information encryption. Here, inspired by bioelectricity-triggered skin pattern switching in cephalopods, an ideal rewritable system consisting of conductive graphene film and carbon dots (CDs) gel with blue-to-red fluorescence-color changes via water-triggered CDs aggregation and re-dispersion is presented. Its rewritability is guaranteed by using water ink to write on the CDs-gel and employing Joule heat of graphene film to evaporate water. Due to the highly controlled electrical stimulus, temporally/spatially controlled display is achieved, enabling on-demand delivery and duration time regulation of the written information. Furthermore, new-concept environment-interactive rewritable system is obtained by integrating sensitive acoustic/optical sensors and multichannel electronic time-delay devices. This work opens unprecedented avenues of rewritable systems and expands potential uses for information encryption/delivery.

Facile conversion of water to functional molecules and cross-linked polymeric films with efficient clusteroluminescence

Exploring approaches to utilize abundant water to synthesize functional molecules and polymers with efficient clusteroluminescence properties is highly significant but has yet to be reported. Herein, a chemistry of water and alkyne is developed. The synthesized products are proven as nonaromatic clusteroluminogens that could emit visible light. Their emission colors and luminescent efficiency could be adjusted by manipulating through-space interaction using different starting materials. Besides, the free-standing polymeric films with much high photoluminescence quantum yields (up to 45.7%) are in situ generated via a water-involved interfacial polymerization. The interfacial polymerization-enhanced emission of the polymeric films is observed, where the emission red-shifts and efficiency increases when the polymerization time is prolonged. The synthesized polymeric film is also verified as a Janus film. It exhibits a vapor-triggered reversible mechanical response which could be applied as a smart actuator. Thus, this work develops a method to synthesize clusteroluminogens using water, builds a clear structure-property relationship of clusteroluminogens, and provides a strategy to in situ construct functional water-based polymeric films.

Multi-Level Information Encryption/Decryption of Fluorescent Hydrogels Based on Spatially Programmed Crystal Phases

The growing urgence of information protection promotes continuously the development of information-encryption technique. To date, hydrogels have become an emerging candidate for advanced information-encryption materials, because of their unique stimulus responsiveness. However, current methods to design multi-level information-encrypted hydrogels usually need sophisticated chemistry or experimental setup. Herein, a novel strategy is reported to fabricate hydrogels with multi-level information encryption/decryption functions through spatially programming the polymorphic crystal phases. As homocrystalline and stereocomplex crystal phases in fluorescent hydrogels have different solvent stabilities, the transparency and fluorescence of the hydrogels can be regulated, thereby enabling the multi-level encryption/decryption processes. Moreover, the structural origins behind these processes are discussed. It is believe that this work will inspire future research on developing advanced information-encryption materials upon programming the polymer crystal structure.

Ionic crosslinking of alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan fluorescent hydrogel for bacterial detection and sterilization

Herein, a polysaccharide-based fluorescent hydrogel with multi-responsiveness simply implemented by concurrent effects of ionic crosslinking/rehydration processes is presented. Specifically, the alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan are chosen to prepare the interpenetrating polymer matrix while a pair of metal cations has been selectively sequentially integrated to alter hydrogel mechanical and fluorescent properties. Experimental results indicate the hydrogels show tunable fluorescent emission in response to multiple cations and pH conditions, and display a reversible "ON/OFF" fluorescent response to Mⁿ⁺/ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Moreover, this synergistic ionic crosslinking strategy is proved to be highly effective in preparing multifunctional metallohydrogels possessing robust/anisotropic mechanical properties, typical shape memory and cation/pH-responsive fluorescence performance, and a proof-of-application for bacterial detection and sterilization has also been demonstrated. Therefore, we believe this study would provide new insights into multifunctional luminescent hydrogels for advanced biomedical systems.

Poly-L-aspartic acid based nonconventional luminescent biomacromolecules with efficient emission in dilute solutions for Al3+ detection

Nonconventional luminescent macromolecules exhibiting bright fluorescence or phosphorescence emission at high concentrations and solid-state have attracted significant attention due to their promising application in different fields. However, most reported nonconventional luminescent macromolecules show weak or no emission in dilute solutions, limiting their large-scale applications. Herein, nonconventional luminescent biomacromolecules with hydrophobic rigid chains, hydrophilic flexibility and inter- or intra-molecular hydrogen bonding interactions were proposed to achieve effective luminescence in dilute solutions. Poly-L-aspartic acid (PASA) with a fluorescence quantum yield of 4.6 % in a dilute solution (0.8 mg/mL) was synthesized to validate this design strategy. The fluorescence intensity of PASA solution increased with the increase of the concentration, demonstrating a clustering-triggered emission (CTE) effect. Furthermore, the fluorescence intensity significantly enhanced when adding Al³⁺ into PASA aqueous solution via the Al³⁺ recognition effect. The detection limits for Al³⁺ (1.71 × 10^-6 mol/L) meet the World Health Organization (WHO) requirements for food detection. At last, PASA solid-state samples exhibit room temperature phosphorescence emission.

Photoinduced Clusteroluminescence Redshift of Poly(methyl acrylate) via Radicals

One-step photopolymerization and photochromism of clusteroluminescence (CL) polymers mean that the polymer materials can be prepared on a large scale and applied widely. Herein, we reported unique photochromic CL polymers prepared by one-step radical photopolymerization. Seven copolymerized films (PMA_xBA) with methyl acrylate and butyl acrylate as monomers, a cross-linked PMA (PMA-CL) film, a double-network PMAPBA film based on the first network PMA-CL, and four PMA films with increasing content of photoinitiator ethoxy benzoin (BEE) were prepared to study CL formation and transition. Experimental results prove that increasing the ratio of the PMA chains in PMA_xBA enhances the photochromic effect, which verifies the main role of PMA chains with the shorter branched alkanes. Surprisingly, cross-linking in PMA-CL strengthens interchain packing and interchain through-space interactions (TSIs), leading to the formation of larger clusters and further CL redshift from 410 to 491 nm, whereas the PBA chains filled in the cross-linked network weakens interchain TSIs among PMA chains and makes CL red shift from 410 to 472 nm. In addition, as the BEE content increases in the PMA films, a higher radical concentration also promotes the formation of TSIs and clusters, which benefits the photochromism. For applications, colorless, dissolvable, and thermoplastic PMA featuring photochromism in this case can be widely used in information loading, rewriting, and multifunctional coating. This work provides a new strategy to enrich the properties of CL polymers toward diverse applications.

Regulable Mixed-Solvent-Induced Phase Separation in Hydrogels for Information Encryption

The rapid progress of information technology is accompanied by plenty of information embezzlement and forgery, but developing advanced encryption technologies to ensure information security remains challenging. Phase separation commonly leads to a dramatic change in the transmittance of hydrophilic polymer networks, which is a potential method for information security but is often neglected. Here, taking the polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel system as a typical example, facilely adjustable information encryption and decryption via its regulable phase separation process in ethanol/water mixed solvent, are reported. By controlling the osmotic pressure of the external and internal environment, it is demonstrated that the diffusion coefficient during deswelling and reswelling, as well as the corresponding change of transmittance of the gel, can be well controlled. Relatively high osmotic pressure leads to rapid phase separation of the initial gel but slow phase remixing of the phase-separated gel, opening the opportunity of applying the gel as a reversible information encryption device. As proof-of-concept demonstrations, several stable and reversible information encryption and decryption systems by making use of the phase separation process of the gels are designed, which are expected to inspire the development of next-generation soft devices for information technology.

Information-Storage Expansion Enabled by a Resilient Aggregation-Induced-Emission-Active Nanocomposite Hydrogel

Advanced materials with high performance and distinctive function are one of the main driving forces for the development of human society. The selection of appropriate materials and adequately utilizing their features to apply them in a specific area rationally are of great significance but remain challenging. Herein, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active nanocomposite (NC) hydrogel is developed by introducing a pH-responsive AIE luminogen (AIEgen) into a Laponite XLS/polyacrylamide-based NC hydrogel (Laponite is a trademark of the company BYK Additives Ltd.). The AIEgen can protonate to interact with the negatively charged clay through the electrostatic interaction, which results in a drastic fluorescence enhancement due to the restriction of intramolecular motion by the rigid clay to the protonated AIEgen. This behavior facilitates the input of fluorescent information with a high contrast ratio in the hydrogel by acid stimulation. Moreover, by utilizing the excellent resilience of the hydrogel, hierarchically inputting and displaying the information in the original and stretched states of the hydrogel film is realized, which achieves information-storage expansion and dual-encryption via switching between stretching and restoring the film. This work showcases fully and synergistically utilizing the superiorities of various advanced materials to achieve superior applications and should guide the future development of advanced materials in emerging areas.

Effects of Through-Bond and Through-Space Conjugations on the Photoluminescence of Small Aromatic and Aliphatic Aldimines

Through-bond conjugation (TBC) and/or through-space conjugation (TSC) determine the photophysical properties of organic luminescent compounds. No systematic studies have been carried out to understand the transition from aromatic TBC to non-aromatic TSC on the photoluminescence of organic luminescent compounds. In this work, a series of small aromatic and aliphatic aldimines were synthesized. For the aromatic imines, surprisingly, N,1-diphenylmethanimine with the highest TBC is non-emissive, while N-benzyl-1-phenylmethanimine and N-cyclohexyl-1-phenylmethanimine emit bright fluorescence in aggregate states. The aliphatic imines are all emissive, and their maximum emission wavelength decreases while the quantum yield increases with a decrease in steric hindrance. The imines show concentration-dependent and excitation-dependent emissions. Theoretical calculations show that the TBC extents in the aromatic imines are not strong enough to induce photoluminescence in a single molecule state, while the intermolecular TSC becomes dominant for the fluorescence emissions of both aromatic and aliphatic imines in aggregate states, and the configurations and spatial conformations of the molecules in aggregate states play a key role in the formation of effective TSC. This study provides an understanding of how chemical and spatial structures affect the formation of TBC and TSC and their functions on the photoluminescence of organic luminescent materials.

Recent Progress in Smart Polymeric Gel-Based Information Storage for Anti-Counterfeiting

Information security protection has a tremendous impact on human life, social stability and national security, leading to the rapid development of anti-counterfeiting materials and related techniques. However, the traditional stored information on hard or dry media is often static and lacks functions, which makes it challenging to deal with increasing and powerful counterfeiting technologies. Modified intelligent polymeric gels exhibit color changes and shape morphing under external stimuli, which give them great potential for applications in information storage. This paper provides an overview of the latest progress in polymeric gel-based information storage materials in relation to counterfeiting. Following a brief introduction of anti-counterfeiting materials, the preparation methods for intelligent gels with adjustable colors (e.g., chemical colors and physical colors) and various encryption/decryption modes involving dimensions and diverse colors are outlined. Finally, the challenges and prospects for information storage and anti-counterfeiting based on smart gels are discussed.

Data storage and encryption with a high security level based on molecular configurational isomers

Developing advanced materials for highly secure data-encryption is crucial but very challenging, as most data-encryption materials (the message area) are chemically different from the substrates (the background) on which they are being written, leading to high risks of data leakage by deciphering via sophisticated instrumental analysis. Additionally, most materials require only one stimulus for decryption, resulting in a low-level of data-security. Here, a three configurational isomer-based data-encryption method is developed (i.e., propylamine, isopropylamine, and cyclopropylamine). Their similar molecular formulae, elemental constitution, and physiochemical properties make them ideal date-encryption materials. On the other hand, the significant differences in lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) of the corresponding polyacrylamides, i.e., 10 °C for poly(N-propylacrylamide), 32 °C for poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), and 53 °C for poly(N-cyclopropylacrylamide), respectively, render an effective method for data decryption. Relying on the above features, the data written by three isomers are well-hidden under given conditions. And a specific temperature range, rather than a simple temperature increase or decrease, would be required for decryption. Furthermore, undesired temperatures give wrong outputs, which is highly deceptive to the hacker. Therefore, a high-level of data security can be achieved. This result opens a new door for designing advanced materials for improving the data-security level.

Mimicking Color-Changing Organisms to Enable the Multicolors and Multifunctions of Smart Fluorescent Polymeric Hydrogels

Fluorescent polymer hydrogels (FPHs) are of significant interest for diverse emerging applications such as visualized sensing, smart display, camouflaging skins, soft actuators/robots, because they can synergize the features of classic fluorescent polymers and hydrogels. With great efforts in the past decades, the major challenge in this field has been believed to be not whether a given FPH of interest can be prepared but how to fabricate robust FPHs with multicolor tunability and multifunctional synergy. Such materials will conceptually minimize the contribution of passive materials to the mass and size of the final system, holding great potential to facilitate multiple applications. To this end, one promising way is to learn from the Nature that has superb capability to forge delicate or sometimes beyond-imagination materials. Chameleons and cephalopods serve as typical examples, which are famous for not only diverse skin color adaptability under changing environmental demands, but also synergistic skin color and body gesture changes to communicate, warn, camouflage, etc. Biological studies revealed their structural color-changing capacity derives from different types of skin chromatophores and their rational multilayer arrangement in under-skin tissues. Besides, their superb ability to heterogeneously integrate soft tissues with disparate functions into topology-optimized architectures has led to various multifunctional performances. Such natural strategies, if replicated and implemented in artificial systems, would significantly benefit and advance the development of robust FPHs for various applications.In this Account, we summarizes the key advances of smart FPHs mainly achieved by our groups. We start by introducing the unique hierarchical multilayer structures of skin chromatophores in structural color-changing reptiles, followed by an in-depth discussion on how a rational integration of bioinspiration and man-made design makes it possible to largely expand the fluorescence color-changing range of smart FPHs to almost cover the whole visible spectrum. Then, to closely mimic the multifunctional behaviors of chameleons and cephalopods, we further develop efficient strategies to introduce supramolecular interactions or heterogeneously integrating smart FPHs with other soft materials with disparate functions, producing a number of multifunctional fluorescent polymeric hydrogel systems. These robust FPHs can find many frontier applications, including bioinspired synergistic color/shape switchable hydrogel actuators/robots, smart systems with on-demand fluorescent patterning capacities for displaying or information encryption, as well as robust chemosensors for important food or environmental analytes. We expect that the discussion presented in this Account would promote better understanding of the discoloration systems in nature, and advance the development of bioinspired color-changing materials.

A dynamic assembly-induced emissive system for advanced information encryption with time-dependent security

The development of advanced materials for information encryption with time-dependent features is essential to meet the increasing demand on encryption security. Herein, smart materials with orthogonal and temporal encryption properties are successfully developed based on a dynamic assembly-induced multicolour supramolecular system. Multicolour fluorescence, including blue, orange and even white light emissions, is achieved by controlling the supramolecular assembly of pyrene derivatives by tailoring the solvent composition. By taking advantage of the tuneable fluorescence, dynamically controlled information encryption materials with orthogonal encryption functions, e.g., 3D codes, are successfully developed. Moreover, time-dependent information encryption materials, such as temporal multi-information displays and 4D codes, are also developed by enabling the fluorescence-controllable supramolecular system in the solid phase, showing multiple pieces of information on a time scale, and the correct information can be identified only at a specified time. This work provides an inspiring point for the design of information encryption materials with higher security requirements.

Protein Hydrogels with Reversibly Patterned Multidimensional Fluorescent Images for Information Storage

Fluorescent polymeric hydrogels are promising soft and wet media for information storage that are desirable for lifelike biomaterials and flexible electronics. Hydrogels based on engineered proteins have attracted considerable interest. However, their potential utility as information storage media has remained largely unexplored. Here, we report a protein-based hydrogel that can serve as an information storage medium. Using LOVTRAP, which consists of protein LOV2 and its binding partner ZDark1, we developed a novel strategy to decorate/release fluorescent proteins onto/from a blank protein hydrogel slate in light-controlled and spatially defined fashions, reversibly generating fluorescent patterns such as quick response codes. To increase the information storage capacity, we further developed grayscale patterning to generate pseudo-colored multi-dimensional fluorescent images. Results of this new method demonstrate a novel reversible information storage approach in soft and wet materials and open a new avenue toward developing next-generation protein-based smart materials for information storage and anti-counterfeit applications.

Multi-level encryption of information in morphing hydrogels with patterned fluorescence

Fluorescent hydrogels have attracted tremendous attention recently in the field of information security due to the booming development of information technology. Along this line, it is highly desired to improve the security level of concealed information by the advancements of materials and encryption technologies. Here we report multi-level encryption of information in a bilayer hydrogel with shape-morphing ability and patterned fluorescence. This hydrogel is composed of a fluorescence layer containing chromophore units in the poly(acrylic acid) network and an active layer with UV-absorption agents in the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) network. The former layer exhibits tunable fluorescence tailored by UV light irradiation to induce unimer-to-dimer transformation of the chromophores, facilitating the write-in of information through photolithography. The latter layer is responsive to temperature, enabling morphing of the bilayer hydrogel. Therefore, the bilayer hydrogel encoded with patterned fluorescent patterns can deform into three-dimensional configurations at room temperature to conceal the information, which is readable only after successive procedures of shape recovery at an appropriate temperature and under UV light irradiation from the right direction. The combination of morphing materials and patterned fluorescence as a new avenue to improve the encryption level of information should merit the design of other smart materials with integrated functions for specific applications.

Swelling-Induced Information Camouflage and Optical Decryption on a Transparent Recoverable Hydrogel Surface

Information camouflage and decryption on hydrogels rely on chemical stimuli such as pH, ultraviolet light, and chemical reactions, in which the cyclability is limited. This work develops a simpler yet effective physical method that can achieve the information camouflage on hydrogels by water swelling and decrypt it under white light. The information camouflage and decryption can proceed with unlimited cycles. To successfully reach the information camouflage, the hydrogel is synthesized with the water swelling ratio in weight as high as 250, which is enabled by the strong electrostatic repulsion of cationic moieties inside the network. At such a high water-swollen state, the hydrogel is still robust and elastic, which provides a mechanical basis to maintain the stability of the camouflaged information. We write information on the hydrogel surface by laser cutting. Upon immersing the hydrogel in water, the high swelling results in huge expansion of the hydrogel, thus inducing the information camouflage. With exposure to white light, the information can be decrypted and becomes visible again. Our protocol utilizes a simple physical process to enable the camouflage and decryption of complex information, which might open an alternative pathway for the development of hydrogel materials in the application of informatics.

Cluster-luminescent polysiloxane nanomaterials: adjustable full-color ultralong room temperature phosphorescence and a highly sensitive response to silver ions

Non-conjugated polysiloxane nanomaterials with amino and urea groups show persistent cluster-induced phosphorescence regulated by doping different small molecules, and fluorescence/phosphorescence dual responses to Ag+ in aqueous solutions.
