Ratiometric Thermometers Based on Rhodamine B and Fluorescein Dye-Incorporated (Nano) Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Frameworks

Ratiometric dual-emitting thermometers based on rhodamine B dye-incorporated (nano) curcumin periodic mesoporous organosilicas for bioapplications

This study explores the potential of combining periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) with a fluorescent dye to develop a ratiometric thermometry system with enhanced stability, sensitivity, and biocompatibility. PMOs, ordered porous materials known for their stability and versatility, serve as an ideal platform. Curcumin, a natural polyphenol and fluorescent dye, is incorporated into PMOs to develop curcumin-functionalized PMOs (C-PMO) and curcumin-pyrazole-functionalized PMOs (CP-PMO) via hydrolysis and co-condensation. These PMOs exhibit temperature-dependent fluorescence properties. The next step involves encapsulating rhodamine B (RhB) dye within the PMO pores to create dual-emitting PMO@dye nanocomposites, followed by a lipid bilayer (LB) coating to enhance biocompatibility and dye retention. Remarkably, within the physiological temperature range, C-PMO@RhB@LB and CP-PMO@RhB@LB demonstrate noteworthy maximum relative sensitivity (Sr) values of up to 1.69 and 2.60% K-1, respectively. This approach offers versatile means to create various ratiometric thermometers by incorporating different fluorescent dyes, holding promise for future temperature sensing applications.

Alizarin-embedded γ-cyclodextrin-based metal-organic framework in a methylcellulose/polyvinyl alcohol film for maintaining and monitoring grass carp freshness

Multifunctional packaging films that monitor and maintain fish freshness hold significant potential for use in the food industry. This study introduces a multifunctional intelligent packaging film comprising alizarin (ALI)-embedded cubic γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (γ-CD-MOFs) (denoted as γ-CD-MOFs@ALI) in a methylcellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (MP)-based matrix to achieve colorimetric monitoring and enhanced preservation of fish freshness. The MP/γ-CD-MOFs@ALI reveals a rapid color transition in 3 min from yellow color progressively darkens to purple as the pH increases from 2.0 to 10.0. And it is proved that the as-prepared film owns high antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus), impressive ABTS+ radical scavenging rates of 85.54 ± 1.25 %, and effective ALI sustained-release properties. The intelligent packaging film exhibits an excellent colorimetric response to total volatile basic nitrogen and provides exceptional freshness preservation performance, effectively prolonging the shelf life of Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) under 25 °C to 42 h.

Luminescence Thermometry Beyond the Biological Realm

As the field of luminescence thermometry has matured, practical applications of luminescence thermometry techniques have grown in both frequency and scope. Due to the biocompatibility of most luminescent thermometers, many of these applications fall within the realm of biology. However, luminescence thermometry is increasingly employed beyond the biological realm, with expanding applications in areas such as thermal characterization of microelectronics, catalysis, and plasmonics. Here, we review the motivations, methodologies, and advances linked to nonbiological applications of luminescence thermometry. We begin with a brief overview of luminescence thermometry probes and techniques, focusing on those most commonly used for nonbiological applications. We then address measurement capabilities that are particularly relevant for these applications and provide a detailed survey of results across various application categories. Throughout the review, we highlight measurement challenges and requirements that are distinct from those of biological applications. Finally, we discuss emerging areas and future directions that present opportunities for continued research.

Enhanced stability of anthocyanins by cyclodextrin-metal organic frameworks: Encapsulation mechanism and application as protecting agent for grape preservation

Anthocyanins are promising naturally occurring food preservatives for enhancing the quality of food products due to their excellent antioxidant properties. However, their low stability hinders their food packaging application. Here, we propose a facile strategy to achieve the improved stability of anthocyanins encapsulated in γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) with an in-depth exploration of their structure-property relationships. The adsorbed anthocyanins in CD-MOFs are stabilized by multiple cooperative non-covalent interactions including hydrogen bonding and van der Waals (vdW) interactions as demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and spectroscopy analysis. Particularly, by ion-exchange of acetate ions into the pores of CD-MOFs, the resulting CD-MOFs (CD-MOF_OAc) shows a higher anthocyanins adsorption rate with a maximum loading capacity of 83.7 % at 1 min. Besides, CD-MOF_OAc possesses the more effective protecting effect on anthocyanins with at least two-fold enhancement of stability in comparison of free anthocyanins under heating and light irradiation. The anthocyanins encapsulated CD-MOFs films for fruit freshness was validated by the Kyoho experiment. This novel encapsulation system provides a new possibility for the potential use of CD-MOFs as the encapsulating material for anthocyanins in fruit preservation.

A dual-emitting Rhodamine B-encapsulated Zn-based MOF for the selective sensing of Chromium(VI)

A Rhodamine B-Zn-MOF composite (RhB-Zn-MOF) with dual emission intensity was synthesized through one pot synthesis by in-situ encapsulation of Rhodamine-B dye on a new Zn-MOF metal-organic framework [(Zn(OAc)2(4-BrIPh) (1,10-phenonthroline)(H2O)].H2O, (4-BrIPh = 4-Bromoisophthalic acid). The synthesized encapsulated material was characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, UV-Visible spectroscopy, TGA, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results showed that the synthesized composite, RhB-Zn-MOF could be used as an efficient probe for the selective sensing of Cr(VI) in the presence of Cr(III) as well as other metal ions.

New opportunities for cyclodextrins in supramolecular assembly: metal organic frameworks, crystalline self-assembly, and catalyzed assembly

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are widely used macrocycles in supramolecular assembly due to their easy availability, versatile functionality and excellent biocompatibility. Although they are well-known for forming host-guest complexes with a wide range of guests and this host-guest chemistry has long been utilized in industry and academia, new opportunities have arisen in recent years, particularly in supramolecular assembly. In the present review, we will first provide a basic introduction to CDs and then summarize their emerging roles in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and materials. This includes their involvement in hybrid frameworks with inorganic components such as metal ions and polyoxometalates, crystalline self-assembly with amphiphilic molecules, and their new possibility of "catassembly" and induced chiral supramolecular structures that have previously been overlooked. Finally, we will comment on the future perspectives of CDs to inspire more ideas and efforts, with the aim of promoting diverse applications of CDs in supramolecular materials.

Engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for thermometry

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs ) are excellent candidates for use in chemistry, material sciences and engineering thanks to their interesting qualitative features and potential applications. Quite interestingly, the luminescence of MOFs can be engineered by regulation of the ligand design, metal ion selection and encapsulation of guest molecules within the MOF cavity. Temperature is a very crucial physical parameter and the market share of temperature sensors is rapidly expanding with technology and medicinal advancement. Among the wide variety of available temperature sensors, recently MOFs have emerged as potential temperature sensors with the capacity to precisely measure the temperature. Lanthanide-based thermometry has advantages because of its ratiometric response ability, high quantum yield and photostability, and therefore lanthanide-based MOFs were initially focused on to construct MOF thermometers. As science and technology have gradually changed, it has been observed that with the inclusion of dye, quantum dots, etc. within the MOF cavity, it is possible to develop MOF-based thermometry. This review consolidates the recent advances of MOF-based ratiometric thermometers and their mechanism of energy transfer for determining the temperature (thermal sensitivity and temperature uncertainty). In addition, some fundamental points are also discussed, such as concepts for guiding the design of MOF ratiometric thermometers, thermometric performance and tuning the properties of MOF thermometers.

Tetra-Nuclear Cluster-Based Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks as White Phosphor, Information Encryption, Self-Calibrating Thermometers, and Fe2+ Sensors

The application of one kind of metal-organic framework (MOF) material used in multiple fields is one of the most interesting research topics. In this work, four new tetra-nuclear cluster-based lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs) [Ln₂(BTDB)₃(DMA)(phen)]_n (Ln = Tb TbMOF, Eu EuMOF, Gd GdMOF, Tb_1.830Eu_0.170 Tb,EuMOF, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4',4″-dicarboxytriphenylamine = H₂BTDB, 1,10-phenanthroline = phen) are obtained based on the ligand of H₂BTDB that is synthesized in our laboratory, and the precise single-crystal structure of H₂BTDB is obtained for the first time. The white phosphor was obtained by facilely hybridizing two components of the orange-yellow emission phosphor of Tb,EuMOF and the blue luminescence material of triphenylamine according to the trichromatic theory. At the same time, TbMOF, EuMOF, Tb,EuMOF, and the white phosphor can be used for information encryption, demonstrating their potential application in the field of anti-counterfeiting. Tb,EuMOF is also a multi-mode and self-calibrating thermometer within a broad temperature range of 110-300 K. Further studies show that EuMOF is a rapid response sensor for Fe²⁺, with a very low limit of detection of 2.0 nM, which is much lower than the national standards for Fe²⁺ (GB 5749-2005, 5.357 μM). It can achieve strong anti-interference detection of Fe²⁺ in actual samples of tap water and lake water. In addition, EuMOF can also be made into an easy-to-use sensing device of test paper for real-time and visual sensing of Fe²⁺.

Tailoring Dye Emissions within Metal-Organic Frameworks for Tunable Luminescence and Ratiometric Temperature Sensing

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as powerful platforms for tuning the luminescence characteristics of guests due to their various structures and functions. Tunable and stimuli-responsive luminescence of guests within MOFs can be achieved through a judicious choice of guests and hosts. Herein, we demonstrate a dramatic change in the luminescence of dye excimers encapsulated in MOFs. A polar dye presented largely red-shifted excimer emissions in MOFs with higher polarities, while a nonpolar dye showed very different excimer emissions. Interestingly, the excimer emissions tailored by the MOFs showed strong thermal quenching. Cz-Ant@ZIF-8, containing two luminescent dyes (carbazole (Cz) and anthracene (Ant)), was prepared, and it presented ratiometric temperature sensing properties (1.55% K^-1) in the temperature range of 278-353 K. This work sheds light on the luminescence tuning of dyes confined in MOFs and the design of sensitive ratiometric thermometers.

A cellulose-based material as a fluorescent sensor for Cr(VI) detection and investigation of antimicrobial properties of its encapsulated form in two different MOFs

It is crucial to detect toxic chromium ions quickly, reliably, sensitively and at low concentrations. In recent years, fluorescence-based methods have been developed for the rapid detection and determination of toxic ions such as chromium. In present work, we focused on the development of a cellulose-based fluorescent probe (Cel-Nap) for the determination of Cr(VI). The fluorescent probe bearing the 1,8-naphthalimide group displayed a low LOD of 1.07 μM for Cr(VI) in the working range of 0.33 × 10^-5-3.22 × 10^-5 M. The fluorescence and antibacterial properties of UiO-66-Cel-Nap and ZIF-8-Cel-Nap materials prepared by encapsulating Cel-Nap with 2 different MOF types (UiO-66 and ZIF-8) were investigated. While it was found that ZIF-8-based materials had better antimicrobial properties compared to those of UiO-66, it was determined that materials containing Ag⁺ were more effective against microbial than those containing AgNPs. It was found that the most effective material was ZIF-8-Cel-Nap-Ag⁺ and it had a significant antibacterial effect against E. coli at a MIC value of 0.0024 mg/mL.

Controllable Aggregation-Induced Emission and Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Behaviors of Bistable [c2] Daisy Chain Rotaxanes for White-Light Emission and Temperature-Sensing Applications

Bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxanes with respective extended and contracted forms of [c2]A and [c2]B containing a blue-emissive anthracene (AN) donor and orange-emissive indandione-carbazole (IC) acceptor were successfully synthesized via click reaction. Tunable-emission bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxanes with fluorescence changes from blue to orange, including bright-white-light emissions, could be modulated by the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) processes through altering water fractions and shuttling processes (i.e., acid/base controls). Accordingly, as a result of excellent fine-tuning AIE (at 60% water content of H₂O/THF) and FRET (with a compatible energy transfer of E_FRET = 33.2%) behaviors after the shuttling process (by adding base), the brightest white-light emission at CIE (0.31, 0.37) with a quantum yield of Φ = 15.64% was obtained in contracted [c2]B with good control of molecular shuttling to possess higher photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields and better energy transfer efficiencies (i.e., the manipulation of reduced PET and enhanced FRET processes) due to their intramolecular aggregations of blue AN donors and orange IC acceptors with a proper water content of 60% H₂O. Furthermore, dynamic light-scattering (DLS) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements, along with theoretical calculations, were utilized to investigate and confirm AIE and FRET phenomena of bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxanes. Especially, both bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxanes [c2]A and [c2]B and noninterlocked monomer M could be exploited for the applications of ratiometric fluorescence temperature sensing due to the temperature effects on the AIE and FRET features. Based on these desirable bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxane structures, this work provides a potential strategy for the future applications of tunable multicolor emission and ratiometric fluorescence temperature-sensing materials.

Luminescent Guests Encapsulated in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Portable Fluorescence Sensor and Visual Detection Applications: A Review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have excellent applicability in several fields and have significant structural advantages, due to their open pore structure, high porosity, large specific surface area, and easily modifiable and functionalized porous surface. In addition, a variety of luminescent guest (LG) species can be encapsulated in the pores of MOFs, giving MOFs a broader luminescent capability. The applications of a variety of LG@MOF sensors, constructed by doping MOFs with LGs such as lanthanide ions, carbon quantum dots, luminescent complexes, organic dyes, and metal nanoclusters, for fluorescence detection of various target analyses such as ions, biomarkers, pesticides, and preservatives are systematically introduced in this review. The development of these sensors for portable visual fluorescence sensing applications is then covered. Finally, the challenges that these sectors currently face, as well as the potential for future growth, are briefly discussed.

Waste-Coffee-Derived Activated Carbon as Efficient Adsorbent for Water Treatment

Activated carbon prepared from waste coffee was utilized as a potential low-cost adsorbent to remove Rhodamine B from aqueous solution. A series of physical characterizations verify that the obtained activated carbon possesses a layered and ordered hexagonal structure with a wrinkled and rough surface. In addition, high specific surface area, appropriate pore distribution, and desired surface functional groups are revealed, which promote the adsorption properties. Various adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the effect on the absorption capacity (e.g., of initial dye concentration, temperature and solution pH) of the material. The results showed that the waste-coffee-derived activated carbon with a large surface area of approximately 952.7 m² g^-1 showed a maximum uptake capacity of 83.4 mg g^-1 at the pH of 7 with the initial dye concentration of 100 mg L^-1 under 50°C. The higher adsorption capacity can be attributed to the strong electrostatic attraction between the negatively charged functional groups in activated carbon and the positively charged functional groups in RB. The kinetic data and the corresponding kinetic parameters were simulated to evaluate the mechanism of the adsorption process, which can fit well with the highest R². The adsorption results confirmed the promising potential of the as-prepared waste-coffee-derived activated carbon as a dye adsorbent.

Dual-mode vehicles with simultaneous thermometry and drug release properties based on hollow Y2O3:Er,Yb and Y2O2SO4:Er,Yb spheres

Employing luminescence thermometry in the biomedical field is undeniably appealing as many health conditions are accompanied by temperature changes. In this work, we show our ongoing efforts and results at designing novel vehicles for dual-mode thermometry and pH-dependent drug release based on hollow spheres. Hereby for that purpose, we exploit the hollow Y₂O₃ and Y₂O₂SO₄ host materials. These two inorganic hollow phosphors were investigated and showed to have excellent upconversion Er³⁺-Yb³⁺ luminescence properties and could be effectively used as optical temperature sensors in the physiological temperature range when induced by near-infrared CW light (975 nm). Further, doxorubicin was exploited as a model anti-cancer drug to monitor the pH-dependent drug release of these materials showing that they can be used for simultaneous thermometry and drug delivery applications.
