Effect of Aluminum Substrate Surface Modification on Wettability and Freezing Delay of Water Droplet at Subzero Temperatures

Condensation or Desublimation: Nanolevel Structural Look on Two Frost Formation Pathways on Surfaces with Different Wettabilities

Processes of water condensation and desublimation on solid surfaces are ubiquitous in nature and essential for various industrial applications, which are crucial for their performance. Despite their significance, these processes are not well understood due to the lack of methods that can provide insight at the nanolevel into the very first stages of phase transitions. Taking advantage of synchrotron grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), two pathways of the frosting process from supersaturated vapors were studied in real time for substrates with different wettabilities ranging from highly hydrophilic to superhydrophobic. Within GIWAXS, a fully quantitative structural and orientational characterization of the undergoing phase transition reveals the information on degree of crystallinity of the new phase and determines the ordering at the surfaces and inside the films at the initial stages of water/ice nucleation from vapor onto the substrates. The diversity of frosting scenarios, including direct desublimation from the vapor and two-stage condensation-freezing processes, was observed by both GIWAXS and ESEM for different combinations of substrate wettability and vapor supersaturations. The classical nucleation theory straightforwardly predicts the pathway of the phase transition for hydrophobic and superhydrophobic substrates. The case of hydrophilic substrates is more intricate because the barriers in Gibbs free energy for nucleating both liquid and solid embryos are close to each other and comparable to thermal energy kBT. At that end, classical nucleation theory allows concluding a relation between contact angles for ice and water embryos on the basis of the observed frosting pathway.

Reducing Ice Adhesion to Polyelectrolyte Surfaces by Counterion-Mediated Nonfrozen Hydration Water

Hydrophilic anti-icing coatings can be energy-effective passive solutions for combating ice accretion and reducing ice adhesion. However, their underlying mechanisms of action remain inferential and are ill-defined from a molecular perspective. Here, we systematically investigate the influence of the counterion identity on the shear ice adhesion strength to cationic polymer coatings having quaternary alkyl ammonium moieties as chargeable groups. Temperature-dependent molecular information on the hydrated polymer films is obtained using total internal reflection (TIR) Raman spectroscopy, complemented with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and ellipsometry. Ice adhesion measurements show a pronounced counterion-specific behavior with a sharp increase in adhesion at temperatures that depend on the anion identity, following the order Cl- < F- < SCN- < Br- < I-. Linked to the freezing of hydration water, the specific ordering results from differences in ion pairing and the amount of water present within the polymer film. Moreover, similar effects can be promoted by varying the cross-linking density in the coating while keeping the anion identity fixed. These findings shed new light on low ice adhesion mechanisms and may inspire novel approaches for improved anti-icing coatings.

Silicone-Based Lubricant-Infused Slippery Coating Covalently Bound to Aluminum Substrates for Underwater Applications

Wetting of solid surfaces is crucial for biological and industrial processes but is also associated with several harmful phenomena such as biofouling and corrosion that limit the effectiveness of various technologies in aquatic environments. Despite extensive research, these challenges remain critical today. Recently, we have developed a facile UV-grafting technique to covalently attach silicone-based coatings to solid substrates. In this study, the grafting process was evaluated as a function of UV exposure time on aluminum substrates. While short-time exposure to UV light results in the formation of lubricant-infused slippery surfaces (LISS), a flat, nonporous variant of slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces, longer exposure leads to the formation of semi-rigid cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings, both covalently bound to the substrate. These coatings were exposed to aquatic media to evaluate their resistance to corrosion and biofouling. While the UV-grafted cross-linked PDMS coating effectively inhibits aluminum corrosion in aquatic environments and allows organisms to grow on the surface, the LISS coating demonstrates improved corrosion resistance but inhibits biofilm adhesion. The synergy between facile and low-cost fabrication, rapid binding kinetics, eco-friendliness, and nontoxicity of the applied materials to aquatic life combined with excellent wetting-repellent characteristics make this technology applicable for implementation in aquatic environments.

Surface Properties of Graffiti Coatings on Sensitive Surfaces Concerning Their Removal with Formulations Based on the Amino-Acid-Type Surfactants

Water-in-oil (w/o) nanoemulsions stabilized with amino acid surfactants (AAS) are one example of nanotechnology detergents of the "brush on, wipe off"-type for removing graffiti coatings from different sensitive surfaces. The high-pressure homogenization (HPH) process was used to obtain the nanostructured fluids (NSFs), including the non-toxic and eco-friendly components such as AAS, esterified vegetable oils, and ethyl lactate. The most effective NSF detergent was determined by response surface methodology (RSM) optimization. Afterwards, several surface properties, i.e., topography, wettability, surface free energy, and the work of water adhesion to surfaces before and after their coverage with the black graffiti paint, as well as after the removal of the paint layers by the eco-remover, were determined. It was found that the removal of graffiti with the use of the NSF detergent is more dependent on the energetic properties and microporous structure of the paint coatings than on the properties of the substrates on which the layers were deposited. The use of NSFs and knowledge of the surface properties could enable the development of versatile detergents that would remove unwanted contamination from various surfaces easily and in a controlled way.

Ethylene glycol nanofluids dispersed with monolayer graphene oxide nanosheet for high-performance subzero cold thermal energy storage

Ethylene glycol (EG) nanofluids have been intensively explored as one of the most promising solid-liquid phase change materials for subzero cold thermal energy storage (CTES). However, the prepared nanofluids usually suffer from a large supercooling degree, a long freezing period, reduced storage capacity and poor dispersion stability. Herein, we overcome these issues by developing stable EG nanofluids that are uniformly dispersed with low concentrations of monolayer ethanol-wetted graphene oxide nanosheets. The homogeneously dispersed monolayer sheet not only improves the thermal conductivity of the nanofluids (12.1%) but also provides the heterogeneous nucleation sites to trigger the crystal formation, thereby shortening the freezing time and reducing the supercooling degree. Compared with the base fluid, the nanofluids have reduced the supercooling degree by 87.2%, shortened the freezing time by 78.2% and maintained 98.5% of the latent heat. Moreover, the EG nanofluids have retained their initial stable homogeneous dispersion after repeated freezing/melting for 50 cycles, which ensures consistent CTES behavior during long-period operations. The facile preparation process, low loading requirement and consistent superior thermophysical properties would make the EG nanofluids loaded with monolayer graphene oxide sheets promising coolants for high-performance phase change-based CTES.

Sessile Droplet Freezing on Hydrophobic Structured Surfaces under Cold Ambient Conditions

There have been conflicting reports as to whether surface wettability is effective in the freezing delay enhancement of attached water droplets. It is an important problem in the development of anti-icing surfaces needed for applications, such as aircraft wings and infrastructures. Here, we prepared precooled ambient conditions and surfaces which included smooth, microstructured, and two nanostructured surfaces with hydrophobic coatings to create an environment closer to the actual environment and to avoid frost formation, which enhances wetting transition and nucleation. Static and dynamic wetting characteristics of each surface were investigated as the fundamental properties and the freezing behavior of precooled water droplets were observed. A distinct elongation of the freezing delay time was observed for droplets on nanostructured surfaces which have static contact angles >150°, in contrast to those on smooth and microstructured surfaces. However, the difference in droplet adhesion induced by nanostructures showed a negligible impact on freezing delay. These results indicated that the reduction of the actual contact area between the solid and liquid phases restricted ice nucleus formation.
