Theranostics: a multifaceted approach utilizing nano-biomaterials

Biomaterials play a vital role in targeting therapeutics. Over the years, several biomaterials have gained wide attention in the treatment and diagnosis of diseases. Scientists are trying to make more personalized treatments for different diseases, as well as discovering novel single agents that can be used for prognosis, medication administration, and keeping track of how a treatment works. Theranostics based on nano-biomaterials have higher sensitivity and specificity for disease management than conventional techniques. This review provides a concise overview of various biomaterials, including carbon-based materials like fullerenes, graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and carbon nanofibers, and their involvement in theranostics of different diseases. In addition, the involvement of imaging techniques for theranostics applications was overviewed. Theranostics is an emerging strategy that has great potential for enhancing the accuracy and efficacy of medicinal interventions. Despite the presence of obstacles such as disease heterogeneity, toxicity, reproducibility, uniformity, upscaling production, and regulatory hurdles, the field of medical research and development has great promise due to its ability to provide patients with personalised care, facilitate early identification, and enable focused treatment.

Radiolabeled nanomaterial for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics: principles and concepts

In the last three decades, radiopharmaceuticals have proven their effectiveness for cancer diagnosis and therapy. In parallel, the advances in nanotechnology have fueled a plethora of applications in biology and medicine. A convergence of these disciplines has emerged more recently with the advent of nanotechnology-aided radiopharmaceuticals. Capitalizing on the unique physical and functional properties of nanoparticles, radiolabeled nanomaterials or nano-radiopharmaceuticals have the potential to enhance imaging and therapy of human diseases. This article provides an overview of various radionuclides used in diagnostic, therapeutic, and theranostic applications, radionuclide production through different techniques, conventional radionuclide delivery systems, and advancements in the delivery systems for nanomaterials. The review also provides insights into fundamental concepts necessary to improve currently available radionuclide agents and formulate new nano-radiopharmaceuticals.

Potential and Progress of 2D Materials in Photomedicine for Cancer Treatment

Over the last decades, photomedicine has made a significant impact and progress in treating superficial cancer. With tremendous efforts many of the technologies have entered clinical trials. Photothermal agents (PTAs) have been considered as emerging candidates for accelerating the outcome from photomedicine based cancer treatment. Besides various inorganic and organic candidates, 2D materials such as graphene, boron nitride, and molybdenum disulfide have shown significant potential for photothermal therapy (PTT). The properties such as high surface area to volume, biocompatibility, stability in physiological media, ease of synthesis and functionalization, and high photothermal conversion efficiency have made 2D nanomaterials wonderful candidates for PTT to treat cancer. The targeting or localized activation could be achieved when PTT is combined with chemotherapies, immunotherapies, or photodynamic therapy (PDT) to provide better outcomes with fewer side effects. Though significant development has been made in the field of phototherapeutic drugs, several challenges have restricted the use of PTT in clinical use and hence they have not yet been tested in large clinical trials. In this review, we attempted to discuss the progress, properties, applications, and challenges of 2D materials in the field of PTT and their application in photomedicine.

Nanomedicine-boosting icaritin-based immunotherapy of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma

Traditional treatments for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), such as surgical resection, transplantation, radiofrequency ablation, and chemotherapy are unsatisfactory, and therefore the exploration of powerful therapeutic strategies is urgently needed. Immunotherapy has emerged as a promising strategy for advanced HCC treatment due to its minimal side effects and long-lasting therapeutic memory effects. Recent studies have demonstrated that icaritin could serve as an immunomodulator for effective immunotherapy of advanced HCC. Encouragingly, in 2022, icaritin soft capsules were approved by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) of China for the immunotherapy of advanced HCC. However, the therapeutic efficacy of icaritin in clinical practice is impaired by its poor bioavailability and unfavorable in vivo delivery efficiency. Recently, functionalized drug delivery systems including stimuli-responsive nanocarriers, cell membrane-coated nanocarriers, and living cell-nanocarrier systems have been designed to overcome the shortcomings of drugs, including the low bioavailability and limited delivery efficiency as well as side effects. Taken together, the development of icaritin-based nanomedicines is expected to further improve the immunotherapy of advanced HCC. Herein, we compared the different preparation methods for icaritin, interpreted the HCC immune microenvironment and the mechanisms underlying icaritin for treatment of advanced HCC, and discussed both the design of icaritin-based nanomedicines with high icaritin loading and the latest progress in icaritin-based nanomedicines for advanced HCC immunotherapy. Finally, the prospects to promote further clinical translation of icaritin-based nanomedicines for the immunotherapy of advanced HCC were proposed.

Multidisciplinary strategies to enhance therapeutic effects of flavonoids from Epimedii Folium: Integration of herbal medicine, enzyme engineering, and nanotechnology

Flavonoids such as baohuoside I and icaritin are the major active compounds in Epimedii Folium (EF) and possess excellent therapeutic effects on various diseases. Encouragingly, in 2022, icaritin soft capsules were approved to reach the market for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) of China. Moreover, recent studies demonstrate that icaritin can serve as immune-modulating agent to exert anti-tumor effects. Nonetheless, both production efficiency and clinical applications of epimedium flavonoids have been restrained because of their low content, poor bioavailability, and unfavorable in vivo delivery efficiency. Recently, various strategies, including enzyme engineering and nanotechnology, have been developed to increase productivity and activity, improve delivery efficiency, and enhance therapeutic effects of epimedium flavonoids. In this review, the structure-activity relationship of epimedium flavonoids is described. Then, enzymatic engineering strategies for increasing the productivity of highly active baohuoside I and icaritin are discussed. The nanomedicines for overcoming in vivo delivery barriers and improving therapeutic effects of various diseases are summarized. Finally, the challenges and an outlook on clinical translation of epimedium flavonoids are proposed.

Dilute lattice doping of 64Cu into 2D-nanoplates: its impact on radio-labeling efficiency and stability for target selective PET imaging

A quintinite nanoplate (⁶⁴Cu-QT-NP) isomorphically substituted with ⁶⁴Cu, as the positron emission tomography (PET) imaging material, was prepared via two-step processes. A ⁶⁴Cu labeling efficiency of 99% was realized, for the first time, by immobilizing the ⁶⁴Cu radioisotope directly in the octahedral site of the 2-dimensional (2D) quintinite lattice. Furthermore, the ⁶⁴Cu labeling stability of ⁶⁴Cu-QT-NPs was also achieved to be more than ∼99% in various solutions such as saline, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and other biological media (mouse and human serums). In an in vivo xenograft mouse model, the passive targeting behavior of ⁶⁴Cu-QT-NPs into tumor tissue based on the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect was also demonstrated by parenteral administration, and successfully visualized using a PET scanner. For enhancing the tumor tissue selectivity, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was coated on ⁶⁴Cu-QT-NPs to form ⁶⁴Cu-QT-NPs/BSA, resulting in better colloidal stability and longer blood circulation time, which was eventually evidenced by the 2-fold higher tumor uptake rate when intravenousely injected in an animal model. It is, therefore, concluded that the present ⁶⁴Cu-QT-NPs/BSA with tumor tissue selectivity could be an advanced nano-device for radio-imaging and diagnosis as well.

Outward Movement of Targeting Ligands from a Built-In Reserve Pool in Nuclease-Resistant 3D Hierarchical DNA Nanocluster for in Vivo High-Precision Cancer Therapy

Nanostructures made entirely of DNAs display great potential as chemotherapeutic drug carriers but so far cannot achieve sufficient clinic therapy outcomes due to off-target toxicity. In this contribution, an aptamer-embedded hierarchical DNA nanocluster (Apt-eNC) is constructed as an intelligent carrier for cancer-targeted drug delivery. Specifically, Apt-eNC is designed to have a built-in reserve pool in the interior cavity from which aptamers may move outward to function as needed. When surface aptamers are degraded, ones in reserve pool can move outward to offer the compensation, thereby magically preserving tumor-targeting performance in vivo. Even if withstanding extensive aptamer depletion, Apt-eNC displays a 115-fold enhanced cell targeting compared with traditional counterparts and at least 60-fold improved tumor accumulation. Moreover, one Apt-eNC accommodates 5670 chemotherapeutic agents. As such, when systemically administrated into HeLa tumor-bearing BALB/c nude mouse model, drug-loaded Apt-eNC significantly inhibits tumor growth without systemic toxicity, holding great promise for high precision therapy.

Cellulose-based functional hydrogels derived from bamboo for product design

Hydrogels have outstanding research and application prospects in the field of product design. Among them, the design and preparation of cellulose-based functional hydrogels derived from bamboo have attracted increasing research interest. Cellulose-based hydrogels not only have the skeleton function of hydrogels, but also retain excellent specificity, smart structural design, precise molecular recognition ability, and superior biocompatibility. Cellulose-based hydrogels show important application prospects in various fields, such as environmental protection, biomedicine, and energy. What's more, they are potentially viable for application in food packaging and plant agriculture, such as fertilizers release and crop production. Recently, researchers have extracted cellulose from bamboo and generated a variety of cellulose-based functional hydrogels with excellent properties by various cross-linking methods. In addition, a variety of multifunctional hybrid cellulose-based hydrogels have been constructed by introducing functional components or combining them with other functional materials, thus expanding the breadth and depth of their applications. Herein, we elaborate on advances in the field of cellulose-based hydrogels and highlight their applications in food packaging and plant agriculture. Meanwhile, the existing problems and prospects are summarized. The review provides a reference for the further development of cellulose-based hydrogels.

Biomimetic superhydrophobic metal/nonmetal surface manufactured by etching methods: A mini review

As an emerging fringe science, bionics integrates the understanding of nature, imitation of nature, and surpassing nature in one aspect, and it organically combines the synergistic complementarity of function and structure-function integrated materials which is of great scientific interest. By imitating the microstructure of a natural biological surface, the bionic superhydrophobic surface prepared by human beings has the properties of self-cleaning, anti-icing, water collection, anti-corrosion and oil-water separation, and the preparation research methods are increasing. The preparation methods of superhydrophobic surface include vapor deposition, etching modification, sol-gel, template, electrostatic spinning, and electrostatic spraying, which can be applied to fields such as medical care, military industry, ship industry, and textile. The etching modification method can directly modify the substrate, so there is no need to worry about the adhesion between the coating and the substrate. The most obvious advantage of this method is that the obtained superhydrophobic surface is integrated with the substrate and has good stability and corrosion resistance. In this article, the different preparation methods of bionic superhydrophobic materials were summarized, especially the etching modification methods, we discussed the detailed classification, advantages, and disadvantages of these methods, and the future development direction of the field was prospected.

Phenylboronic acid conjugated multifunctional nanogels with 131I-labeling for targeted SPECT imaging and radiotherapy of breast adenocarcinoma

We report a new 131I-labeling functional platform for targeted single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging and radiotherapy of breast adenocarcinoma. In this study, polyethyleneimine (PEI) based nanogels (P.NH2 NGs) were prepared by water/oil polymerization, modified with targeted agent phenylboronic acid (PBA), and labeled with radionuclide 131I. The NGs without 131I-labeling own a spherical structure, uniform size distribution, and good cell viability. After 131I-labeling, the obtained 131I-PBA-PHP NGs displayed much higher cellular uptake than the non-targeted NGs due to the good softness and fluidity of NGs and the PBA targeting. The in vivo results demonstrated that 131I-PBA-PHP NGs could specifically target breast cancer cells and efficiently aggregate into xenograft breast adenocarcinoma for tumor SPECT imaging and specific radiotherapy. The developed 131I-labeling NGs may be used as a promising platform for efficient radioactive theranostic nanoplatform of tumor.

Nanotechnology-Assisted Cell Tracking

The usefulness of nanoparticles (NPs) in the diagnostic and/or therapeutic sector is derived from their aptitude for navigating intra- and extracellular barriers successfully and to be spatiotemporally targeted. In this context, the optimization of NP delivery platforms is technologically related to the exploitation of the mechanisms involved in the NP-cell interaction. This review provides a detailed overview of the available technologies focusing on cell-NP interaction/detection by describing their applications in the fields of cancer and regenerative medicine. Specifically, a literature survey has been performed to analyze the key nanocarrier-impacting elements, such as NP typology and functionalization, the ability to tune cell interaction mechanisms under in vitro and in vivo conditions by framing, and at the same time, the imaging devices supporting NP delivery assessment, and consideration of their specificity and sensitivity. Although the large amount of literature information on the designs and applications of cell membrane-coated NPs has reached the extent at which it could be considered a mature branch of nanomedicine ready to be translated to the clinic, the technology applied to the biomimetic functionalization strategy of the design of NPs for directing cell labelling and intracellular retention appears less advanced. These approaches, if properly scaled up, will present diverse biomedical applications and make a positive impact on human health.

Carbon Dots in Biomedicine: A Review

Despite the rapid development of science and technology, the effective treatment of cancer still threatens human life and health. However, the success of cancer treatment is closely related to early diagnosis, identification, and effective treatment. In recent years, with the strengthening of the development and research of nanomaterials for cancer diagnosis and treatment, researchers have found that carbon dots (CDs) have the advantages of wide absorption, excellent biocompatibility, diverse imaging characteristics, and photostability and are widely used in various fields, such as sensing, imaging, and drug/gene transportation. Recently, researchers also discovered that CDs could be used as an effective photosensitizer to generate active oxygen or convert light energy into heat under the stimulation of the external lasers, making them have the effects of photothermal and photodynamic therapy for cancer. In this review, we first outline the single-modal and multimodal imaging analysis of CDs in cancer cells. After introducing diversified imaging functions, we focused on the design and the latest research progress of CDs in phototherapy and introduced in detail the strategies of CDs in phototherapy treatment and the challenges faced by clinical applications. We hope that this overview can provide important insights for researchers and accelerate the pace of research on CDs in imaging-guided phototherapy treatment.

Self-Assembled Nanoparticles for Tumor-Triggered Targeting Dual-Mode NIRF/MR Imaging and Photodynamic Therapy Applications

In this study, the self-assembling strategy was used to synthesize a therapeutic and diagnostic nanosystem for tumor-triggered targeting dual-mode near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF)/magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and photodynamic therapy applications. This theranostic nanosystem was synthesized based on the self-assembling of the short peptide (PLGVRGRGDC) and the gadolinium chelator (diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid) functionalized amphiphilic DSPE-PEG₂₀₀₀, followed by loading with the insoluble photosensitizer therapeutic agent chlorin e6 (Ce6). The formed theranostic nanosystem can accumulate in the matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2) rich tumor sites guided by the enhanced permeability and retention effect and MMP2-substrate peptide (PLGVR) targeting. After PLGVR was hydrolyzed in the tumor microenvironment by MMP2, the nanosystem was actively taken up by tumor cells via Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptide-mediated internalization. With the coexistence of gadolinium and Ce6, the formed nanosystem can be used for both NIRF/MR dual-mode imaging and photodynamic therapy. These tumor-triggered targeting self-assembled nanoparticles with low cytotoxicity and high endocytosis efficiency can efficiently induce A549 cancer cell apoptosis under laser irradiation. Meanwhile, they possessed enhanced tumor-targeted NIRF/MR imaging ability and efficiently inhibited tumor growth with minimal side effects in mice bearing A549 lung cancer. Therefore, these self-assembled theranostic nanoparticles may have great potential for cancer clinical diagnosis and therapy.

Current status and future prospects of nanoscale metal–organic frameworks in bioimaging

The importance of diagnosis and in situ monitoring of lesion regions and transportation of bioactive molecules has a pivotal effect on successful treatment, reducing side effects, and increasing the chances of survival in the case of diseases.

Recent Progress in Technetium-99m-Labeled Nanoparticles for Molecular Imaging and Cancer Therapy

Nanotechnology has played a tremendous role in molecular imaging and cancer therapy. Over the last decade, scientists have worked exceptionally to translate nanomedicine into clinical practice. However, although several nanoparticle-based drugs are now clinically available, there is still a vast difference between preclinical products and clinically approved drugs. An efficient translation of preclinical results to clinical settings requires several critical studies, including a detailed, highly sensitive, pharmacokinetics and biodistribution study, and selective and efficient drug delivery to the target organ or tissue. In this context, technetium-99m (^99mTc)-based radiolabeling of nanoparticles allows easy, economical, non-invasive, and whole-body in vivo tracking by the sensitive clinical imaging technique single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Hence, a critical analysis of the radiolabeling strategies of potential drug delivery and therapeutic systems used to monitor results and therapeutic outcomes at the preclinical and clinical levels remains indispensable to provide maximum benefit to the patient. This review discusses up-to-date ^99mTc radiolabeling strategies of a variety of important inorganic and organic nanoparticles and their application to preclinical imaging studies.

Dendrimer-decorated nanogels: Efficient nanocarriers for biodistribution in vivo and chemotherapy of ovarian carcinoma

Nanomedicine has revolutionized disease theranostics by the accurate diagnosis and efficient therapy. Here, the PAMAM dendrimer decorated PVCL-GMA nanogels (NGs) were developed for favorable biodistribution in vivo and enhanced antitumor efficacy of ovarian carcinoma. By an ingenious design, the NGs with a unique structure that GMA-rich domains were localized on the surface were synthesized via precipitation polymerization. After G2 dendrimer decoration, the overall charge is changed from neutral to positive, and the NGs-G2 display the whole charge nature of positively charged corona and neutral core. Importantly, the unique architecture and charge conversion of NGs-G2 have a profound impact on the biodistribution and drug delivery in vivo. As a consequence of this alteration, the NGs-G2 as nanocarriers emerge the highly sought biodistribution of reduced liver accumulation, enhanced tumor uptake, and promoted drug release, resulting in the significantly augmented antitumor efficacy with low side effects. Remarkably, this finding is contrary to some reported work that the nanocarriers with positive charge have preferential liver uptake. Moreover, the NGs-G2 also displayed thermal/pH dual-responsive behaviors, excellent biocompatibility, improved cellular uptake, and stimuli-responsive drug release. Encouragingly, this work demonstrates a novel insight into the strategy for optimizing design, improving biodistribution and enhancing theranostic efficacy of nanocarriers.

Gold nanoparticles meet medical radionuclides

Thanks to their unique optical and physicochemical properties, gold nanoparticles have gained increased interest as radiosensitizing, photothermal therapy and optical imaging agents to enhance the effectiveness of cancer detection and therapy. Furthermore, their ability to carry multiple medically relevant radionuclides broadens their use to nuclear medicine SPECT and PET imaging as well as targeted radionuclide therapy. In this review, we discuss the radiolabeling process of gold nanoparticles and their use in (multimodal) nuclear medicine imaging to better understand their specific distribution, uptake and retention in different in vivo cancer models. In addition, radiolabeled gold nanoparticles enable image-guided therapy is reviewed as well as the enhancement of targeted radionuclide therapy and nanobrachytherapy through an increased dose deposition and radiosensitization, as demonstrated by multiple Monte Carlo studies and experimental in vitro and in vivo studies.

Assessment of 177 Lu-labeled carboxyl-terminated polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer-RGD peptide conjugate

Structurally unique polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers implanted with targeting biological moiety along with complexed radiometal constitute a favorable nano-system for diagnosis and therapy of targeted tumor sites. In the present study, carboxyl functionalities of PAMAM- generation 4 dendrimer (PAMAM-G4-COOH) were conjugated with ε-amino group of lysine of cRGDfK peptide to impart integrin α_v β₃ targeting capability. Reaction of p-NH₂ -Bn-DOTA with PAMAM was accomplished via acid-amine coupling using EDC/NHS for ¹⁷⁷ Lu-complexation. ¹⁷⁷ Lu-labeled nano-system, ¹⁷⁷ Lu-PAMAM-DOTA-cRGDfK demonstrated receptor-mediated uptake in murine melanoma B16F10 cells during in vitro cell uptake studies. In vivo biodistribution studies demonstrated low tumor uptake and retention of ¹⁷⁷ Lu-PAMAM-DOTA-cRGDfK which may be attributed to rapid blood clearance. However, fast clearance from non-target organs resulted in higher target to background ratio. Tumor uptake of targeted nano-system, ¹⁷⁷ Lu-PAMAM-DOTA-cRGDfK was observed to be significantly (p < 0.05) higher in comparison to ¹⁷⁷ Lu-PAMAM-DOTA without the targeting peptide. Inhibition studies with unlabeled cRGDfK resulted in 60% reduction in tumor uptake of ¹⁷⁷ Lu-PAMAM-DOTA-cRGDfK, indicating specificity of the developed nano-system towards integrin α_v β₃ receptors.

Safe and efficient 2D molybdenum disulfide platform for cooperative imaging-guided photothermal-selective chemotherapy: A preclinical study

Introduction

The striking imbalance between the ever-increasing amount of nanomedicines and low clinical translation of products has become the focus of intense debate. For clinical translation, the critical issue is to select the appropriate agents and combination regimen for targeted diseases, not to prepare increasingly complex nanoplatforms.

Objectives

A safe and efficient platform, α-tocopheryl succinate (α-TOS) married 2D molybdenum disulfide, was devised by a facile method and applied for cooperative imaging-guided photothermal-selective chemotherapy of ovarian carcinoma.

Methods

A novel platform of PEGylated α-TOS and folic acid (FA) conjugated 2D MoS₂ nanoflakes was fabricated  for the cooperative multimode computed tomography (CT)/photoacoustic (PA)/thermal imaging-guided photothermal-selective chemotherapy of ovarian carcinoma.

Results

The photothermal efficiency (65.3%) of the platform under safe near-infrared irradiation is much higher than that of other photothermal materials reported elsewhere. Moreover, the covalently linked α-TOS renders platform with selective chemotherapy for cancer cells. Remarkably, with these excellent properties, the platform can be used to completely eliminate the solid tumor by safe photothermal therapy, and then kill the residual cancer cells by selective chemotherapy to prevent tumor recurrence. More significantly, barely side effects occur in the whole treatment process. The excellent efficacy and safety benefits in vivo lead to the prominent survival rate of 100% over 91 days.

Conclusion

The safe and efficient platform might be a candidate of clinical nanomedicines for multimode theranostics. This study demonstrates an innovative thought in precise nanomedicine regarding the design of next generation of cancer theranostic protocol for potential clinical practice.

Folic Acid-Conjugated Gold Nanostars for Computed Tomography Imaging and Photothermal/Radiation Combined Therapy

Fabrication of multifunctional nanoprobes, which integrate tumor targeting, imaging, and effective treatment, has been widely explored in nanomedicine. In the present study, we fabricated tumor-targeting polymer folic acid-terminated polyethylene glycol thiol-modified gold nanostars (GNS-FA), which could realize X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging and PTT/RT synergistic therapy. The synthesized GNS-FA exhibited good biocompatibility. GNS-FA could be used as a CT imaging contrast agent due to the strong X-ray attenuation of Au. GNS-FA exhibited good near-infrared (NIR) light absorption and excellent photothermal conversion performance, making them promising photothermal transduction agents (PTAs). Furthermore, GNS-FA could be used as an RT sensitizer to enhance the radio-mediated cell death due to the high atomic number (high Z) of gold. Hence, GNS-FA were used as the CT imaging agent, PTA, and radiosensitizer in this work. The in vitro antitumor experiments showed that the PTT/RT combined treatment had enhanced anticancer efficacy compared with the monotherapy (PTT or RT). Our results indicated that the bioconjugated GNS could offer an excellent nanoplatform for CT imaging-guided PTT/RT combined cancer therapy in the future.

A Dual-Responsive Platform Based on Antifouling Dendrimer-CuS Nanohybrids for Enhanced Tumor Delivery and Combination Therapy

Design of stimuli-responsive nanomedicine with enhanced tumor delivery for combination therapy still remains a great challenge. Here, a unique design of an antifouling-dendrimer-based nanoplatform with dual pH- and redox-responsiveness is reported to meet this challenge. First, generation 5 (G5) poly(amidoamine) dendrimers are modified with targeting ligand cyclic arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptide through a polyethylene glycol (PEG) spacer and zwitterion of thiolated N,N-dimethyl-cysteamine-carboxybetaine (CBT) via pH-responsive benzoicimine bond to form G5.NH₂ PEGRGDCBT conjugates. Then, doxorubicin (DOX) is linked to the functional G5 dendrimers through a redox-responsive disulfide bond, followed by entrapment of CuS nanoparticles within the dendrimers. The created functional dendrimer-CuS nanohybrids with a CuS core size of 3.6 nm display a good antifouling property and excellent photothermal conversion property in the second near-infrared window. In addition, the neutral surface charge of the nanohybrids is able to be switched to be positive in the tumor region with slightly acidic microenvironment due to the break of benzoicimine bond to promote their intracellular uptake, while the redox-sensitive disulfide bond affords the fast release of the conjugated DOX within tumor cells to exert its therapeutic effect. Taken together with the CuS cores, the created dendrimer-CuS nanohybrids enable enhanced combination chemotherapy and photothermal therapy of tumors.

Developments in Treatment Methodologies Using Dendrimers for Infectious Diseases

Dendrimers comprise a specific group of macromolecules, which combine structural properties of both single molecules and long expanded polymers. The three-dimensional form of dendrimers and the extensive possibilities for use of additional substrates for their construction creates a multivalent potential and a wide possibility for medical, diagnostic and environmental purposes. Depending on their composition and structure, dendrimers have been of interest in many fields of science, ranging from chemistry, biotechnology to biochemical applications. These compounds have found wide application from the production of catalysts for their use as antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents. Of particular interest are peptide dendrimers as a medium for transport of therapeutic substances: synthetic vaccines against parasites, bacteria and viruses, contrast agents used in MRI, antibodies and genetic material. This review focuses on the description of the current classes of dendrimers, the methodology for their synthesis and briefly drawbacks of their properties and their use as potential therapies against infectious diseases.

Zwitterionic Nanogels and Microgels: An Overview on Their Synthesis and Applications

Zwitterionic polymers by virtue of their unique chemical and physical attributes have attracted researchers in recent years. The simultaneous presence of positive and negative charges in the same repeat unit renders them of various interesting properties such as superhydrophilicity, which has significantly broadened their scope for being used in different applications. Among polyzwitterions of different architectures, micro- and/or nano-gels have started receiving attention only until recently. These 3D cross-linked colloidal structures show peculiar characteristics in context to their solution properties, which are attributable either to the comonomers present or the presence of different electrolytes and biological specimens. In this review, a concise yet detailed account is provided of the different synthetic techniques and application domains of zwitterion-based micro- and/or nanogels that have been explored in recent years. Here, the focus is kept solely on the "polybetaines," which have garnered maximum research interest and remain the extensively studied polyzwitterions in literature. While their vast application potential in the biomedical sector is being detailed here, some other areas of scope such as using them as microreactors for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles or making smart membranes for water-treatment are discussed in this minireview as well.

Multistage Extraction of Star Anise and Black Pepper Derivatives for Antibacterial, Antioxidant, and Anticancer Activity

Recently, natural resources have attracted considerable interest for their applications in food security and human health problems. Traditional natural spices, such as star anise and black pepper, played important roles in the pharmaceutical and food industries due to their strong pharmacological activity, antioxidant potential and rare complications. In order to achieve biomasses from the natural product with multiple bioactivities, we developed the multistage extraction method to extract and separate various bioactive compounds from these natural plants. Our work demonstrated that various bioactive-rich extractives were achieved using steam distilled- or oxidative-extraction methods with high extraction yields and purity. Furthermore, the extractives in each step can be used not only as bioactive compounds, but also as a resource to further prepare different derivatives during the next extractive step, providing biomass-saving to a great extent. The extractives obtained with high yields and purities (>82%) were identified by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, FTIR, UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Moreover, these biomasses display potent antibacterial activities against some types of microorganisms such as S.aureus, S.pyogenes, E.coli, and S.typhi with a lowest MIC of 400 μg/ml for the development of antibacterial agents, significant antioxidant activity as the natural antioxidant for enhancing food shelf-life, and excellent anticancer activity that induces significant cancer cell apoptosis. This work showed the different multistage extracts from natural products, which enable them to be applied in the fields of the pharmaceutical industry and the food industry.

99mTc radiolabeling of polyethylenimine capped carbon dots for tumor targeting: synthesis, characterization and biodistribution

PURPOSE

Due to the favorable physicochemical properties and the biocompatibility, carbon dots (CDs) have gained a great attention as a tumor targeting agent. This study investigates polyethylenimine capped CDs (PEI capped CDs) as a prospective nanocarrier of technetium-99m (99mTc) for tumor targeting. Technetium-labeled CDs could be introduced as a promising candidate for single photon emission tomography (SPECT) imaging.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Polyethylenimine capped CDs were prepared by hydrothermal method using hyperbranched PEI and citric acid. For a purpose of comparison, citrate capped CDs were also prepared by microwave irradiation. Both types of CDs were characterized and radiolabeled with 99mTc using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a reducing agent. Biodistribution and tumor targeting efficiency of the produced radiolabeled CDs have been studied in Earlich ascites tumor mice model.

RESULTS

Citrate capped CDs and PEI capped CDs have been synthesized successfully and characterized. High radiochemical yield of 99mTc-citrate capped CDs 99mTc-PEI capped CDs was obtained (97 ± 0.7 and 90 ± 0.2, respectively). Biodistribution studies of 99mTc-labeled PEI capped CDs have shown a potential tumor uptake (10 ± 0.5% Radioactivity/gram tumor) with high target to non-target ratio (T/NT) around 7 at 1-h post injection. 99mTc-citrate capped CDs have achieved a lower tumor uptake level (3.8 ± 0.3% Radioactivity/gram tumor 1 h post injection).

CONCLUSION

This study introduces PEI capped CDs as a promising nanocarrier of 99mTc for efficient tumor targeting. Technetium-labeled PEI capped CDs could be utilized as a potential SPECT tumor imaging agent.

Engineered non-invasive functionalized dendrimer/dendron-entrapped/complexed gold nanoparticles as a novel class of theranostic (radio)pharmaceuticals in cancer therapy

Nanomedicine represents a very significant contribution in current cancer treatment; in addition to surgical intervention, radiation and chemotherapeutic agents that unfortunately also kill healthy cells, inducing highly deleterious and often life-threatening side effects in the patient. Of the numerous nanoparticles used against cancer, gold nanoparticles had been developed for therapeutic applications. Inter alia, a large variety of dendrimers, i.e. soft artificial macromolecules, have turned up as non-viral functional nanocarriers for entrapping drugs, imaging agents, and targeting molecules. This review will provide insights into the design, synthesis, functionalization, and development in biomedicine of engineered functionalized hybrid dendrimer-tangled gold nanoparticles in the domain of cancer theranostic. Several aspects are highlighted and discussed such as 1) dendrimer-entrapped gold(0) hybrid nanoparticles for the targeted imaging and treatment of cancer cells, 2) dendrimer encapsulating gold(0) nanoparticles (Au DENPs) for the delivery of genes, 3) Au DENPs for drug delivery applications, 4) dendrimer encapsulating gold radioactive nanoparticles for radiotherapy, and 5) dendrimer/dendron-complexed gold(III) nanoparticles as technologies to take down cancer cells.

Intelligent nanogels with self-adaptive responsiveness for improved tumor drug delivery and augmented chemotherapy

For cancer nanomedicine, the main goal is to deliver therapeutic agents effectively to solid tumors. Here, we report the unique design of self-adaptive ultrafast charge-reversible chitosan-polypyrrole nanogels (CH-PPy NGs) for enhanced tumor delivery and augmented chemotherapy. CH was first grafted with PPy to form CH-PPy polymers that were used to form CH-PPy NGs through glutaraldehyde cross-linking via a miniemulsion method. The CH-PPy NGs could be finely treated with an alkaline solution to generate ultrafast charge-reversible CH-PPy-OH-4 NGs (R-NGs) with a negative charge at a physiological pH and a positive charge at a slightly acidic pH. The R-NGs display good cytocompatibility, excellent protein resistance, and high doxorubicin (DOX) loading efficiency. Encouragingly, the prepared R-NGs/DOX have prolonged blood circulation time, enhanced tumor accumulation, penetration and tumor cell uptake due to their self-adaptive charge switching to be positively charged, and responsive drug delivery for augmented chemotherapy of ovarian carcinoma in vivo. Notably, the tumor accumulation of R-NGs/DOX (around 4.7%) is much higher than the average tumor accumulation of other nanocarriers (less than 1%) reported elsewhere. The developed self-adaptive PPy-grafted CH NGs represent one of the advanced designs of nanomedicine that could be used for augmented antitumor therapy with low side effects.

Dendrimers based cancer nanotheranostics: An overview

Cancer is a known deadliest disease that requires a judicious diagnostic, targeting, and treatment strategy for an early prognosis and selective therapy. The major pitfalls of the conventional approach are non-specificity in targeting, failure to precisely monitor therapy outcome, and cancer progression leading to malignancies. The unique physicochemical properties offered by nanotechnology derived nanocarriers have the potential to radically change the landscape of cancer diagnosis and therapeutic management. An integrative approach of utilizing both diagnostic and therapeutic functionality using a nanocarrier is termed as nanotheranostic. The nanotheranostics platform is designed in such a way that overcomes various biological barriers, efficiently targets the payload to the desired locus, and simultaneously supports planning, monitoring, and verification of treatment delivery to demonstrate an enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Thus, a nanotheranostic platform could potentially assist in drug targeting, image-guided focal therapy, drug release and distribution monitoring, predictionof treatment response, and patient stratification. A class of highly branched nanocarriers known as dendrimers is recognized as an advanced nanotheranostic platform that has the potential to revolutionize the oncology arena by its unique and exciting features. A dendrimer is a well-defined three-dimensional globular chemical architecture with a high level of monodispersity, amenability of precise size control, and surface functionalization. All the dendrimer properties exhibit a reproducible pharmacokinetic behavior that could ensure the desired biodistribution and efficacy. Dendrimers are thus being exploited as a nanotheranostic platform embodying a diverse class of therapeutic, imaging, and targeting moieties for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Dendrimer-based nanohybrids in cancer photomedicine

Cancer phototherapy with non-invasiveness and high therapeutical efficiency has emerged as a hot spot research in cancer management. Various nanomaterials have been involved in the development of novel photoactive agents to overcome the current limitations in cancer phototherapy. Dendrimers, as an excellent nanocarrier with unique physicochemical properties, have received extensive attention and much effort has been made in the development of dendrimer-based hybrid platforms for photomedicine applications. Dendrimers can be entrapped with photosensitive agents within their internal cavities and be surface modified with reactive molecules, constructing multifunctional nanoplatforms for cancer treatment. In this review, we concisely survey the design of several different kinds of dendrimer-based nanohybrids for cancer photomedicine applications, and provide an overview of their recent applications in molecular imaging, single-modality photothermal therapy or photodynamic therapy, combination therapy, and theranostics of cancer. In addition, we also briefly discuss the future perspectives in the area of dendrimer-based nanohybrids for cancer photomedicine.

Radiolabeled Gold Nanoparticles for Imaging and Therapy of Cancer

In the Last decades, nanotechnology has provided novel and alternative methodologies and tools in the field of medical oncology, in order to tackle the issues regarding the control and treatment of cancer in modern society. In particular, the use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in radiopharmaceutical development has provided various nanometric platforms for the delivery of medically relevant radioisotopes for SPECT/PET diagnosis and/or radionuclide therapy. In this review, we intend to provide insight on the methodologies used to obtain and characterize radiolabeled AuNPs while reporting relevant examples of AuNPs developed during the last decade for applications in nuclear imaging and/or radionuclide therapy, and highlighting the most significant preclinical studies and results.

99mTc-Methionine Gold Nanoparticles as a Promising Biomaterial for Enhanced Tumor Imaging

Methionine-gold nanoparticles (MGNs) was synthesized by conjugating methionine via dithiocarbamate linkage to gold nanoparticles (GNPs), prepared simultaneously by one pot modified Burst method. Formation of MGNs was confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy and appearance of new IR bands in the range of 934 cm^-1 to 1086 cm^-1 and shifting of N-C,S-S and S-C-S stretching, confirms the involvement of '-S-C-S-' group of methionine dithiocarbamate with GNPs. The presence of Au in MGNs was confirmed by EDXA spectrum, whereas TEM, SAED and XRD revealed that MGNs are nanocrystalline (~13 nm) and have face-centered cubic structure. MGNs was labeled with ^99mTc (TMGNs) with radiolabeling efficiency greater than 99% using 300 μg of stannous chloride, pH 7 and 90.6 MBq of ^99mTcO₄. The stability data showed that the conjugate will remain infrangible in systemic circulation and in acidic microenvironment of tumor. The blood kinetic profile of TMGN in rabbits and biodistribution studies in EAT tumor bearing balb/c mice showed longer in vivo circulation and slow clearance compared to radiolabeled methionine (TM). TMGN demonstrated nearly three-fold higher tumor accumulation (3.9 ± 0.35% ID/g), 2-fold lower tumor saturation dose (1.0 μg/kg) and higher tumor retention compared with TM. Data showed that the TMGN tumor: blood ratio (1.05) is nearly 2.5-fold higher than TM (0.44), whereas TMGN tumor: muscle ratio (97.5) is nearly 8-fold higher than TM (11.6). In conclusion, TMGN showed excellent tumor targeting and has promising prospects as a SPECT-radiopharmaceutical for imaging tumors.

Polyethylenimine-based theranostic nanoplatform for glioma-targeting single-photon emission computed tomography imaging and anticancer drug delivery

Background

Glioma is the deadliest brain cancer in adults because the blood–brain-barrier (BBB) prevents the vast majority of therapeutic drugs from entering into the central nervous system. The development of BBB-penetrating drug delivery systems for glioma therapy still remains a great challenge. In this study, we aimed to design and develop a theranostic nanocomplex with enhanced BBB penetrability and tumor-targeting efficiency for glioma single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging and anticancer drug delivery.

Results

This multifunctional nanocomplex was manufactured using branched polyethylenimine (PEI) as a template to sequentially conjugate with methoxypolyethylene glycol (mPEG), glioma-targeting peptide chlorotoxin (CTX), and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) for ^99mTc radiolabeling on the surface of PEI. After the acetylation of the remaining PEI surface amines using acetic anhydride (Ac₂O), the CTX-modified PEI (mPEI-CTX) was utilized as a carrier to load chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) in its interior cavity. The formed mPEI-CTX/DOX complex had excellent water dispersibility and released DOX in a sustainable and pH-dependent manner; furthermore, it showed targeting specificity and therapeutic effect of DOX toward glioma cells in vitro and in vivo (a subcutaneous tumor mouse model). Owing to the unique biological properties of CTX, the mPEI-CTX/DOX complex was able to cross the BBB and accumulate at the tumor site in an orthotopic rat glioma model. In addition, after efficient radiolabeling of PEI with ^99mTc via DTPA, the ^99mTc-labeled complex could help to visualize the drug accumulation in tumors of glioma-bearing mice and the drug delivery into the brains of rats through SPECT imaging.

Conclusions

These results indicate the potential of the developed PEI-based nanocomplex in facilitating glioma-targeting SPECT imaging and chemotherapy.

Radiolabeling strategies and pharmacokinetic studies for metal based nanotheranostics

Radiolabeled metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) have drawn considerable attention in the fields of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging, drug delivery, and radiation therapy, given the fact that they can be potentially used as diagnostic imaging and/or therapeutic agents, or even as theranostic combinations. Here, we present a systematic review on recent advances in the design and synthesis of MNPs with major focuses on their radiolabeling strategies and the determinants of their in vivo pharmacokinetics, and together how their intended applications would be impacted. For clarification, we categorize all reported radiolabeling strategies for MNPs into indirect and direct approaches. While indirect labeling simply refers to the use of bifunctional chelators or prosthetic groups conjugated to MNPs for post-synthesis labeling with radionuclides, we found that many practical direct labeling methodologies have been developed to incorporate radionuclides into the MNP core without using extra reagents, including chemisorption, radiochemical doping, hadronic bombardment, encapsulation, and isotope or cation exchange. From the perspective of practical use, a few relevant examples are presented and discussed in terms of their pros and cons. We further reviewed the determinants of in vivo pharmacokinetic parameters of MNPs, including factors influencing their in vivo absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination, and discussed the challenges and opportunities in the development of radiolabeled MNPs for in vivo biomedical applications. Taken together, we believe the cumulative advancement summarized in this review would provide a general guidance in the field for design and synthesis of radiolabeled MNPs towards practical realization of their much desired theranostic capabilities. Multifunctional Dendrimer-Entrapped Gold Nanoparticles for Labeling and Tracking T Cells Via Dual-Modal Computed Tomography and Fluorescence Imaging

Nanosystems for monitoring and tracking T cells provide an important basis for evaluating the functionality and efficacy of T cell-based immunotherapy. To this end, we designed herein an efficient nanoprobe for T cell monitoring and tracking using poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer-entrapped gold nanoparticles (Au DENPs) conjugated with Fluo-4 for dual-mode computed tomography (CT) and fluorescence imaging. In this study, PAMAM dendrimers of generation 5 (G5) were modified with hydroxyl-terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG) and then used to entrap 2.0 nm Au NPs followed by acetylation of the excess amine groups on the dendrimer surface. Subsequently, the calcium ion probe was covalently attached to the dendrimer nanohybrids through the PEG hydroxyl end groups to gain the functional {(Au⁰)₂₅-G5.NHAc-(PEG)₁₄-(Fluo-4)₂} nanoprobe. This nanoprobe had excellent water solubility, high X-ray attenuation coefficient, and good cytocompatibility in the given concentration range, as well as a high T cell labeling efficiency. Confocal microscopy and flow cytometry results demonstrated that the nanoprobe was able to fluorescently sense activated T cells. Moreover, the nanoprobe was able to realize both CT and fluorescence imaging of subcutaneously injected T cells in vivo. Thus, the developed novel dendrimer-based nanosystem may hold great promise for advancing and improving the clinical application of T cell-based immunotherapy.

Nanoagents Based on Poly(ethylene glycol)-b-Poly(l-thyroxine) Block Copolypeptide for Enhanced Dual-Modality Imaging and Targeted Tumor Radiotherapy

Future healthcare requires development of novel theranostic agents that are capable of not only enhancing diagnosis and monitoring therapeutic responses but also augmenting therapeutic outcomes. Here, a versatile and stable nanoagent is reported based on poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(l-thyroxine) (PEG-PThy) block copolypeptide for enhanced single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) dual-modality imaging and targeted tumor radiotherapy in vivo. PEG-PThy acquired by polymerization of l-thyroxine-N-carboxyanhydride (Thy-NCA) displays a controlled M_n , high iodine content of ≈49.2 wt%, and can spontaneously form 65 nm-sized nanoparticles (PThyN). In contrast to clinically used contrast agents like iohexol and iodixanol, PThyN reveals iso-osmolality, low viscosity, and long circulation time. While PThyN exhibits comparable in vitro CT attenuation efficacy to iohexol, it greatly enhances in vivo CT imaging of vascular systems and soft tissues. PThyN allows for surface decoration with the cRGD peptide achieving enhanced CT imaging of subcutaneous B16F10 melanoma and orthotopic A549 lung tumor. Taking advantages of a facile iodine exchange reaction, ¹²⁵ I-labeled PThyN enables SPECT/CT imaging of tumors and monitoring of PThyN biodistribution in vivo. Besides, ¹³¹ I-labeled and cRGD-functionalized PThyN displays remarkable growth inhibition of the B16F10 tumor in mice (tumor inhibition rate > 89%). These poly(l-thyroxine) nanoparticles provide a unique and versatile theranostic platform for varying diseases.

Radiolabeling nanomaterials for multimodality imaging: New insights into nuclear medicine and cancer diagnosis

Nuclear medicine imaging has been developed as a powerful diagnostic approach for cancers by detecting gamma rays directly or indirectly from radionuclides to construct images with beneficial characteristics of high sensitivity, infinite penetration depth and quantitative capability. Current nuclear medicine imaging modalities mainly include single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) that require administration of radioactive tracers. In recent years, a vast number of radioactive tracers have been designed and constructed to improve nuclear medicine imaging performance toward early and accurate diagnosis of cancers. This review will discuss recent progress of nuclear medicine imaging tracers and associated biomedical imaging applications. Radiolabeling nanomaterials for rational development of tracers will be comprehensively reviewed with highlights on radiolabeling approaches (surface coupling, inner incorporation and interface engineering), providing profound understanding on radiolabeling chemistry and the associated imaging functionalities. The applications of radiolabeled nanomaterials in nuclear medicine imaging-related multimodality imaging will also be summarized with typical paradigms described. Finally, key challenges and new directions for future research will be discussed to guide further advancement and practical use of radiolabeled nanomaterials for imaging of cancers.

Iodine-Rich Polymersomes Enable Versatile SPECT/CT Imaging and Potent Radioisotope Therapy for Tumor in Vivo

Emerging tumor treatment demands high sensitivity and high-spatial resolution diagnosis in combination with targeted therapy. Here, we report that iodine-rich polymersomes (I-PS) enable versatile single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography (CT) dual-modal imaging and potent radioisotope therapy for breast cancer in vivo. Interestingly, I-PS could be easily and stably labeled with radioiodine, ¹²⁵I and ¹³¹I. Dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy showed that ¹²⁵I-PS had a size of 106 nm and vesicular morphology, similar to those of the parent I-PS. Methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assays displayed that I-PS and ¹²⁵I-PS were noncytotoxic, whereas ¹³¹I-PS caused significant death of 4T1 cells at 5 mg PS/mL with a radioactivity of 12 μCi. Pharmacokinetic and biodistribution studies showed that ¹²⁵I-PS has a prolonged circulation and distributes mainly in tumor and the reticuloendothelial system. The intravenous injection of ¹²⁵I-PS to 4T1 murine breast tumor-bearing mice allowed simultaneous high sensitivity and high-spatial resolution imaging of tumor by SPECT and CT, respectively. The therapeutic studies revealed that ¹³¹I-PS could effectively retard the growth of 4T1 breast tumor and significantly prolong mice survival time. The hematoxylin and eosin staining assay proved that ¹³¹I-PS induced tumor cell death. I-PS emerges as a robust and versatile platform for dual-modal imaging and targeted radioisotope therapy.

Zwitterionic Gadolinium(III)-Complexed Dendrimer-Entrapped Gold Nanoparticles for Enhanced Computed Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Lung Cancer Metastasis

Design of dual mode or multimode contrast agents or nanoplatforms with antifouling properties is crucial for improved cancer diagnosis since the antifouling materials are able to escape the clearance of the reticuloendothelial system with improved pharmacokinetics. Herein, we present the creation of zwitterionic gadolinium(III) (Gd(III))-complexed dendrimer-entrapped gold nanoparticles (Au DEN) for enhanced dual mode computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of lung cancer metastasis. In the present work, poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers of generation 5 were partially decorated with carboxybetanie acrylamide (CBAA), 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC), and 1,3-propane sultone (1,3-PS), respectively at different degrees, then used to entrap Au NPs within their interiors, and finally acetylated to cover their remaining amine termini. Through protein resistance, macrophage cellular uptake, and pharmacokinetics assays, we show that zwitterionic Au DEN modified with 1,3-PS exhibit the best antifouling property with the longest half-decay time (37.07 h) when compared to the CBAA- and MPC-modified Au DEN. Furthermore, with the optimized zwitterion type, we then prepared zwitterionic Gd(III)-loaded Au DEN modified with arginine-glycine-aspartic acid peptide for targeted dual mode CT/MR imaging of a lung cancer metastasis model. We disclose that the designed multifunctional Au DEN having an Au core size of 2.7 nm and a surface potential of 7.6 ± 0.9 mV display a good X-ray attenuation property, relatively high r₁ relaxivity (13.17 mM s^-1), acceptable cytocompatibility, and targeting specificity to α_vβ₃ integrin-expressing cancer cells and enable effective dual mode CT/MR imaging of a lung cancer metastasis model in vivo. The developed multifunctional zwitterion-functionalized Au DEN may be potentially adopted as an effective nanoprobe for enhanced dual-modal CT/MR imaging of other cancer types.
