Abstract
In order to achieve a multifunctional compound with potential application in organic photonics and electronics, a multidonor benzothiadiazole derivative was rationally designed and synthesized employing microwave irradiation as energy source, increasing the process efficiency about yields and reaction times in comparison with conventional conditions. This powerful compound displayed solvatochromism and showed efficient behavior as red optical waveguide with low OLC around 10-2 dB μm-1 and with the capacity of light transmission in two directions. In addition, the proposed derivative acted as efficient p-type semiconductor in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with hole mobilities up 10-1 cm2 V-1 s-1 . This corroborates its multifunctional character, thus making it a potential candidate to be applied in hybrid organic field-effect optical waveguides (OFEWs).

Abstract
The combination of electron-deficient viologen ligands with electron-rich POMs is a typical acceptor-donor system that has recently received much attention. Under solvothermal and hydrothermal conditions, by introducing three symmetric viologen ligands into POM-based hybrid materials, we successfully constructed four POMs-viologen inorganic-organic hybrid compounds, namely (1,3-bcbpy)2·(δ-Mo8O26) (1) (1,3-bcbpy·2Cl = 1,1'-bis(3-carboxybenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridine dichloride), {CoII(1,4-bcbpy)2(H2O)2[H2(β-Mo8O26)]}·2H2O·2CH2O (2), (1,4-bcbpy)2·(δ-Mo8O26)·2H2O (3) (1,4-bcbpy·2Cl = 1,1'-bis(4-carboxybenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridine dichloride, CH2O = formaldehyde), and {CuII(1,1-pmbby)2(H2O)[H2(β-Mo8O26)2]}·5H2O·C2H7N (4) (1,1-pmbby·2Cl = 1,1'-[1,4-phenylbis(methylene)]bis-(4,4'-bipyridine)dichloride, C2H7N = dimethylamine). These four compounds exhibit different fascinating structures, especially compound 4 is a typical metal-organic framework. Compounds 1-4 exhibit good discoloration behaviors under various external stimuli. For example, compounds 1-4 showed a positive response to the irradiation from a 300 W Xe lamp. When a positive voltage was applied to the ECD based on compounds 1-4, 1/2/3/4-ECD underwent a significant color conversion. What's more, compound 4 also showed obvious discoloration results after heating. In a word, 1-4 are multifunctional discoloration materials under different external stimuli. In addition, the coated filter paper prepared based on compound 3 can be used as a new printing material medium and can be successfully applied in erasable inkless printing and dual anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract
Since strong polarity usually causes emission quenching, materials with polarity-induced emission (PIE) are rarely reported despite their important applications in polar environments. Herein, an N-phenylcarbazole-substituted benzophenone derivative (BP-3-Cz) with a twisted electron donor-acceptor (D-A) structure is synthesized. The incorporation of heteroatoms into the twisted π-conjugated D-A backbone simultaneously endows BP-3-Cz with obvious polarity- and pressure-induced emission. Spectral analysis, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and quantum chemical calculation results confirm that BP-3-Cz has special optical features related to the molecular conformation change and excited state turning to planarized intramolecular charge transfer with an increase in polarity or applied pressure. These findings contribute to the understanding of the PIE mechanism and the design of new PIE materials.

Abstract
Electrochemical switching of luminescence color between magenta and blue using two types of luminescent materials and electrochromic molecules was demonstrated based on the control of excited energy transfer through an electrochromic reaction. The magenta photoluminescence, due to the integration of red luminescence from the Eu(III) complex and blue fluorescence from the anthracene derivative, was reversibly modulated to a pure-blue luminescence color by an electrochemical redox reaction. Electrofluorochromism is induced by effective excited energy transfer from the Eu(III) complex to the electrochromic molecule under a redox reaction.

Abstract
With the advent of the big data era, information storage and security are becoming increasingly important. However, high capacity information storage and multilevel anti-counterfeiting are typically difficult to achieve simultaneously. To address this challenge, herein, two electrochromic and electrofluorochromic dual-functional polymers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics were rationally designed and facilely prepared. Upon applying voltages, the absorption and fluorescence spectra of the AIE polymers can undergo reversible changes, accompanied by variation of their color and emission. By utilizing the controllable characteristics of the polymers, dual-mode display devices were fabricated via a simple spraying technique. More interestingly, a four-dimensional color code device was constructed by adding color change multiplexing to the two-dimensional space, thereby achieving high capacity information storage. Moreover, the color code device can also be applied in the multilevel anti-counterfeiting area. The encrypted information can be dynamically converted under different voltages. Thus, the AIE polymers show great promise for applications in multidimensional information storage and dynamic anti-counterfeiting, and the design strategy may provide a new avenue for advanced information storage and high security technology.

Abstract
With the rapid development of human society, consumer electronics have brought marvelous changes to human daily life, but they are accompanied by the much higher demand of display quality and visual experience. Therefore, ideal conversion among the three primary colors-red (R), green (G), and blue (B)-in a single pixel has been a better way to avoid the insurmountable technical barrier of subpixel technology of modern displays. Electrofluorochromic (EFC) materials capable of a novel luminescent switching, open a powerful way to design optoelectronic devices for displays and information storage etc. Colorful EFC devices, especially emitting the ideal three primary colors without subpixel technology, have been a challenge for years. Herein, a long-awaited single-pixel device with RGB color is fabricated successfully based on proton-coupled electron transfer. The RGB EFC device exhibits outstanding EFC properties, such as low turn-on voltage (+1.0 and -1.0 V), large color gamut, and good stability (500 cycles for each color). Prototypes of colorful alphanumeric displays are well demonstrated in a facile way. The success of this new exploration of single-pixel RGB EFC device not only provides the possibility of full-color emission in EFC devices, but also will widely broaden the EFC system and their applications.

Abstract
TiO2 nanowires with high transparency and good ion storage capacity were explored as the charge-balancing layers for assembling electrochromic devices (ECDs). Increase thickness of TiO2 nanowires layer lowers the driving potential of the entire ECDs accompanied with reduced potential at the EC layer electrode, which further leads to decreased optical contrast and switching speed of the ECDs. Meanwhile, it can be found that the EC layer electrodes possess larger charge densities than those of TiO2 nanowire electrodes during the electrochemical redox process of these ECDs. However, the intrinsic injection and extraction charge densities of each single electrode are similar, which appears that the intrinsic charge balance of EC layer and TiO2 nanowires electrodes play more important role in the cycling stability of the ECDs. ECD with an optimum thickness of the TiO2 nanowires layer exhibits good electrochromic properties in term of high optical contrast (∼45%), fast switching speed (3.23 s) and excellent cycling stability (which has nearly no decay after 5000 cycles). This study explores the effects of thickness of TiO2 Nanowires layer on electrode potentials and electrochromic properties of electrochromic devices (ECDs), providing a potentially new direction for the preparation of ECDs with good integrated performance.

Abstract
Single-molecule functional materials with luminescence tunable by external stimuli are of increasing interest due to their application in sensors, display devices, biomarkers, and switches. Herein, new europium and samarium complexes with ligands having triphenylamine (TPA) groups as the redox center and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as the coordinating groups and diketonate (tta) as the second ligand have been constructed. The complexes show white-light emission in selected solvents for proper mixtures of the emission from Ln3+ ions and the ligands. Meanwhile, they exhibit reversible luminescence switching on/off properties by controlling the external potential owing to intramolecular energy transfer from the Ln3+ ions to the electrochemically generated radical cation of TPA•+. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been performed to study the electronic spectra. The proposed intramolecular energy transfer processes have been verified by density functional theory (DFT) studies.

Abstract
A series of polyimides (PIs) were prepared by polycondensation of a diamine monomer with five anhydrides (1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic anhydride (BTA), 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTD), 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTD), 4-[(1,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-5-isobenzofuranyl)oxy]-1,3-isobenzofurandione (DDII), and 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPTD)), which have anodic electrochromic (EC) properties. These PIs not only show good solubility and thermal stability, but also demonstrate stable electrochemical oxidation behavior and good EC properties, and the highest retained electroactivity reaches 99% after 600 cycles. In addition, the series of PIs exhibit excellent electrofluorescencechromic (EFC) properties. Therefore, the novel materials will contribute to the application of EC or EFC displays in the future.

Abstract
Fluorescent light modulation by small electric potentials has gained huge interest in the past few years. This phenomenon, called electrofluorochromism, is of the utmost importance for applications in optoelectronic devices. Huge efforts are being addressed to developing electrofluorochromic systems with improved performances. One of the most critical issue is their low cyclability, which hampers their widespread use. It mostly depends on the intrinsic reversibility of the electroactive/fluorophore molecular system and on device architecture. Here we show a novel fluorene-based mixed-valence electrofluorochromic system that allows direct electrofluorochromic switching and exhibits incomparable electrochemical reversibility and device cyclability of more than 10 000 cycles.

Abstract
Electroluminochromism is an interesting property found in certain classes of molecules and polymers whose photoluminescence can be modulated through the application of an external electrical bias. Unlike electrochromic materials, electroluminochromic counterparts and their applications are comparatively fewer in quantity and are less established. Nonetheless, there prevails an increasing interest in this class of electro-active materials due to their potential applications in optoelectronics, such as smart-displays, and chemical and biological sensing. This review seeks to showcase the different classes of electroluminochromic materials with focus on (i) organic molecules, (ii) transition metal complexes, and (iii) organic polymers. The mechanisms and electroluminochromic performance of these classes of materials are summarized. This review should allow scientists to have a better and deeper understanding of materials design strategies and, more importantly, structure-property relationships and, thus, develops electroluminochromic materials with desired performance in the future.

Abstract
The E/Z isomerization reaction of the multi-cyanostilbene molecule is still not clear. Herein, we have designed and synthesized three star-shaped molecular isomers with a triphenylamine core linked to two cyanostilbene groups with E/Z isomerization, Z,Z-TPDCF, Z,E-TPDCF and E,E-TPDCF, possessing three different isomeric molecular configurations, to investigate the specific E/Z isomerization reaction of the cyanostilbene groups in the two molecular arms. The in situ UV, 1H NMR and HPLC spectra under UV-irradiation clearly showed that the E/Z isomerization reactions of both E,E-TPDCF and Z,Z-TPDCF firstly turned them into Z,E-TPDCF, and the Z,E-TPDCF was almost simultaneously turned into more E,E-TPDCF and less Z,Z-TPDCF due to the calculated lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of Z,E-TPDCF on the cyanostilbene arm with the Z-configuration. In general, Z,E-TPDCF exhibited a relatively better configurational stability than Z,Z-TPDCF or E,E-TPDCF under the photo-irradiation conditions. Further research demonstrated that all three isomers exhibited excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties.

Abstract
Electrofluorochromism has attracted great attention due to the intelligence optoelectronic and sensing applications. The intrinsically switchable fluorophores with high solid-state fluorescence are regarded as key for ideal electrofluorochromic materials. Here, we reported an AIE-active polyamide with diphenylamine and tetraphenylethylene units, showing high fluorescence quantum yield up to 69.1% for the solid polymer film and stable electrochemical cycling stability. The polyamide exhibited reversible color and emission switching even in hundreds of cycles, and the fluorescence on/off contrast ratio was determined up to 417, which is the highest value to our knowledge. Furthermore, as the response time is vital for the real-life applications, to speed up the response of electrofluorochromism, a porous polymer film was readily prepared through a facile method, notably exhibiting high fluorescence contrast, long-term stability and obviously improved response, due to the sharply increased surface area. Therefore, the AIE-functionalization combining the porous structure strategy will synergistically and dramatically improve the electrofluorochromic performance, which will also promote their practical applications in the near future.

Abstract
A monomer (1) consisting of a benzothiadiazole core flanked by two triphenylamines and two styrene pendant moieties was prepared. The monomer was fluorescent with its emission spanning 145 nm in the visible, contingent on the organic solvent used for the measurement. In addition to its positive solvatochromism, the absolute fluorescence quantum yield (Φfl) was consistently >20% with values >80% being measured in hexane, toluene, diethyl ether, and toluene. 1 could be reversibly oxidized with an oxidation potential of 880 mV vs SCE. The monomer could be immobilized on ITO-coated glass substrates. The resulting 425 nm thick immobilized film (poly-1) was 15% thinner than the monomer coating deposited by spray- and spin-coating. The electroactive film did not delaminate from the electrode upon either washing or cycling electrochemically between its oxidized and neutral states. Its absorption at 460 nm bleached upon electrochemical oxidation with the formation of a strong absorption at 880 nm and in the NIR, similar to 1. The perceived reversible color change with applied potential switched between yellow and gray. The fluorescence intensity of poly-1 could be switched with applied potentials. A passive transmissive device prepared from poly-1 was both electrochromic and fluorochromic, exhibiting reversible color change and fluorescence quenching.

Abstract
The synthesis, electrochemical, and photophysical characterization of N,N'-dialkylated and N,N'-dibenzylated dipyridinium thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole derivatives are reported. The thiazolothiazole viologens exhibit strong blue fluorescence with high quantum yields between 0.8-0.96. The dioctyl, dimethyl, and dibenzyl derivatives also show distinctive and reversible yellow to dark blue electrochromism at low reduction potentials. The fused bicyclic thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole heterocycle allows the alkylated pyridinium groups to remain planar, strongly affecting their electrochemical properties. The singlet quantum yield is greatly enhanced with quaternarization of the peripheral 4-pyridyl groups (ΦF increases from 0.22 to 0.96) while long-lived fluorescence lifetimes were observed between 1.8-2.4 ns. The thiazolothiazole viologens have been characterized using cyclic voltammetry, UV-visible absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy, spectroelectrochemistry, and time-resolved photoluminescence. The electrochromic properties observed in solution, in addition to their strong fluorescent emission properties, which can be suppressed upon 2 e- reduction, make these materials attractive for multifunctional optoelectronic, electron transfer sensing, and other photochemical applications.

Abstract
A thermoresponsive fluorescent polymer gel with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase transition has been prepared by cooperating conjugated fluorene homopolymer poly(2,7-(9,9-di(8-di(2-picolyl)aminooctyl))fluorene) (PPAOF) and small organic dye sulforhodamine B (SRB) or its sodium salt (SRB-Na). The sol-gel phase transition originates from the electrostatic interactions between the protonated pyridyl/amino groups in PPAOF and the sulfonic groups in the organic dye molecules, as revealed by FTIR, variable-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopies, and cyclic voltammetry measurements. Consequently, the LCST value can be finely controlled by simply tuning the component concentrations. Moreover, due to the inefficient energy transfer, the resulting fluorescent polymer gel exhibits two independent emission bands at 440 and 577 nm, assigned to the characteristic emissions from fluorene homopolymer and organic dye, respectively. Furthermore, this fluorescent polymer gel exhibits a reversible electrofluorochromic (EFC) property with high fluorescence contrast when it is assembled in a single-layer supporting electrolyte-free EFC device. Most interestingly, different fluorescence colors can be achieved from the two electrodes of the device. Our findings may present a new way to design conjugated polymer based LCST gels and EFC materials.
