Nano-Cesium for Anti-Cancer Properties: An Investigation into Cesium Induced Metabolic Interference

Screening diluents to optimize cesium contaminant separation using t-BAMBP extractant

The widespread use of nuclear energy has raised concerns about nuclear safety and radioactive waste management, particularly due to the release of radioactive cesium. This study investigates the use of t-BAMBP (4-tert-butyl-2-(α-methylbenzyl) phenol) for the extraction and separation of cesium from simulate high concentration cesium containing wastewater, focusing on the selection of suitable diluents to enhance the efficiency of the process. We performed a systematic study using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to evaluate the intrinsic properties and interactions of various common diluents with t-BAMBP. The diluents studied include aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylene), alkanes (cyclohexane, hexane, heptane), and alcohols (hexanol, octanol). Our computational results revealed that cyclohexane is the most suitable diluent due to its moderate solvation-free energy, high nonpolarity, and optimal balance between solubility and reactivity. Experimental validation confirmed the computational findings. The cyclohexane-diluted t-BAMBP system achieved the highest cesium extraction efficiency of over 94 %, with a separation factor (βCs/K) of 767.67. Cyclohexane demonstrated the lowest toxicity and cost among the diluents evaluated, making it a safer and more economical choice for practical applications. The results of this study provide a comprehensive theoretical and experimental basis for the selection of diluents in the t-BAMBP extraction system, offering insights for the sustainable utilization of cesium resources and effective management of radioactive waste.

The associations of non-essential metal mixture with fasting plasma glucose among Chinese older adults without diabetes

The evidence about the effect of non-essential metal mixture on fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels among older adults without diabetes is limited. This study aims to estimate the individual and joint relationship between five non-essential metals and FPG levels in Chinese older adults without diabetes. This study included 2362 older adults without diabetes. Urinary concentrations of five non-essential metals, i.e., cesium (Cs), aluminum (Al), thallium (Tl), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As), were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The associations of single metals and the metal mixture with FPG levels were assessed using linear regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models, respectively. Adjusted single-metal linear regression models showed positive associations of urinary Al (β = 0.016, 95%CI: 0.001-0.030) and Cs (β = 0.018, 95%CI: 0.006-0.031) with FPG levels. When comparing the 2th, 3th, and 4th quartiles of urine Cs to its 1th quartile, the significant associations between Cs and FPG levels were found and presented as an "inverted U" trend (βQ2 vs. Q1: 0.034; βQ3 vs. Q1:0.054; βQ4 vs. Q1: 0.040; all P<0.05). BKMR analyses showed urinary level of Cs exhibited an "inverted U" shape association with FPG levels. Moreover, the FPG levels increased linearly with the raised levels of the non-essential metal mixture, and the posterior inclusion probability (PIP) of Cs was the highest (0.92). Potential positive interaction of As and Cs on FPG levels was found in BKMR model. Stratified analysis displayed significant interactions of hyperlipidemia and urine Cs or Tl on FPG levels. An inverse U-shaped association between Cs and FPG was found, individually and as mixture. The FPG levels increased with the raised levels of the non-essential metal mixture, and Cs was the most contributor to FPG levels. Further research is required to confirm the correlation between non-essential metals and FPG levels and to clarify the underlying mechanisms.

Prospecting Cellular Gold Nanoparticle Biomineralization as a Viable Alternative to Prefabricated Gold Nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have shown considerable potential in a vast number of biomedical applications. However, currently there are no clinically approved injectable GNP formulations. Conversely, gold salts have been used in the clinic for nearly a century. Further, there is evidence of GNP formation in patients treated with gold salts (i.e., chrysiasis). Recent reports evaluating this phenomenon in human cells and in murine models indicate that the use of gold ions for in situ formation of theranostic GNPs could greatly improve the delivery within dense biological tissues, increase efficiency of intracellular gold uptake, and specificity of GNP formation within cancer cells. These attributes in combination with safe clinical application of gold salts make this process a viable strategy for clinical translation. Here, the first summary of the current knowledge related to GNP biomineralization in mammalian cells is provided along with critical assessment of potential biomedical applications of this newly emergent field.

Porous 3D Prussian blue/cellulose aerogel as a decorporation agent for removal of ingested cesium from the gastrointestinal tract

In the present study, we successfully synthesized a porous three-dimensional Prussian blue-cellulose aerogel (PB-CA) composite and used it as a decorporation agent for the selective removal of ingested cesium ions (Cs⁺) from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The safety of the PB-CA composite was evaluated through an in vitro cytotoxicity study using macrophage-like THP-1 cells and Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cells. The results revealed that the PB-CA composite was not cytotoxic. An adsorption study to examine the efficiency of the decorporation agent was conducted using a simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). The adsorption isotherm was fitted to the Langmuir model with a maximum Cs⁺ adsorption capacity of 13.70 mg/g in SIF that followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The PB-CA composite showed excellent stability in SIF with a maximum Cs⁺ removal efficiency of 99.43%. The promising safety toxicology profile, remarkable Cs⁺ adsorption efficacy, and excellent stability of the composite demonstrated its great potential for use as an orally administered drug for the decorporation of Cs⁺ from the GI tract.
