Solvent Polarity Effects on the Mechanochemistry of Spiropyran Ring Opening

The spiropyran mechanophore (SP) is employed as a reporter of molecular tension in a wide range of polymer matrices, but the influence of surrounding environment on the force-coupled kinetics of its ring opening has not been quantified. Here, we report single-molecule force spectroscopy studies of SP ring opening in five solvents that span normalized Reichardt solvent polarity factors (ETN) of 0.1-0.59. Individual multimechanophore polymers were activated under increasing tension at constant 300 nm s-1 displacement in an atomic force microscope. The extension results in a plateau in the force-extension curve, whose midpoint occurs at a transition force f* that corresponds to the force required to increase the rate constant of SP activation to approximately 30 s-1. More polar solvents lead to mechanochemical reactions that are easier to trigger; f* decreases across the series of solvents, from a high of 415 ± 13 pN in toluene to a low of 234 ± 9 pN in n-butanol. The trend in mechanochemical reactivity is consistent with the developing zwitterionic character on going from SP to the ring-opened merocyanine product. The force dependence of the rate constant (Δx‡) was calculated for all solvent cases and found to increase with ETN, which is interpreted to reflect a shift in the transition state to a later and more productlike position. The inferred shift in the transition state position is consistent with a double-well (two-step) reaction potential energy surface, in which the second step is rate determining, and the intermediate is more polar than the product.

Template-Directed Polymerization of Binary Acrylate Monomers on Surface-Activated Lignin Nanoparticles in Toughening of Bio-Latex Films

Fabricating bio-latex colloids with core-shell nanostructure is an effective method for obtaining films with enhanced mechanical characteristics. Nano-sized lignin is rising as a class of sustainable nanomaterials that can be incorporated into latex colloids. Fundamental knowledge of the correlation between surface chemistry of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) and integration efficiency in latex colloids and from it thermally processed latex films are scarce. Here, an approach to integrate self-assembled nanospheres of allylated lignin as the surface-activated cores in a seeded free-radical emulsion copolymerization of butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate is proposed. The interfacial-modulating function on allylated LNPs regulates the emulsion polymerization and it successfully produces a multi-energy dissipative latex film structure containing a lignin-dominated core (16% dry weight basis). At an optimized allyl-terminated surface functionality of 1.04 mmol g^-1 , the LNPs-integrated latex film exhibits extremely high toughness value above 57.7 MJ m^-3 . With multiple morphological and microstructural characterizations, the well-ordered packing of latex colloids under the nanoconfinement of LNPs in the latex films is revealed. It is concluded that the surface chemistry metrics of colloidal cores in terms of the abundance of polymerization-modulating anchors and their accessibility have a delicate control over the structural evolution of core-shell latex colloids.

Mechanochromophore-linked Polymeric Materials with Visible Color Changes

Mechanical force as a type of stimuli for smart materials has obtained much attention in the past decade. Color-changing materials in response to mechanical stimuli have shown great potential in the applications such as sensors and displays. Mechanochromophore-linked polymeric materials, which are a growing sub-class of these materials, are discussed in detail in this review. Two main types of mechanochromophores which exhibit visible color change, summarized herein, involve either isomerization or radical generation mechanisms. This review focuses on their synthesis and incorporation into polymer matrices, the type of mechanical force used, factors affecting the mechanochromic properties, and their applications. Mechanochromic Polymers That Recognize the Duration of the Mechanical Stimulation via Multiple Mechanochromism

Mechanochromic polymers can be used as stress- and damage-detecting sensors in polymeric materials, given that mechanical stimuli can be visualized by color changes. Although many types of mechanochromic polymers have been reported so far, there are only few examples on their further functionalization based on multiple color changes (multicolor mechanochromism). Herein, preliminary results are reported on the use of multicolor mechanochromism to detect the duration of the mechanical stimulation by simply mixing white powders of two mechanochromic polystyrene samples that contain a different radical-type mechanochromophore at the midpoint of each polymer chain and thus exhibit different colors in response to mechanical stimuli. The mechanosensitivity can be tuned via the polymer length and shape, and a combination of these two types of mechanochromic polymers allows detecting the duration with multicolor mechanochromism, i.e., a color change from white to blue upon short exposure to grinding and a color change from white to gray upon longer exposure to grinding. Electron paramagnetic resonance and solid-state UV-vis measurements support the mechanism proposed for this multiple mechanochromism.

Revealing the Dependence of Molecular-Level Force Transfer and Distribution on Polymer Cross-Link Density via Mechanophores

The correlation between polymer architecture and molecular-level forces has long been a challenging research subject. Herein, spiropyran, a mechanophore that exhibits fluorescence change under force, was incorporated as a cross-linker between PMMA backbone segments. Using an in situ opto-mechanical setup to probe the molecular-level forces, the mechano-response of SP-linked PMMA as a function of the cross-link density was monitored during deformation. The dependence of the molecular-level force on cross-link density was quantitatively examined and revealed. First, a higher cross-link density shifted the fluorescence onset, that is, the onset of the spiropyran-to-merocyanine transition, to lower strains, eventually shifting the onset long before yield, without requiring sufficient chain mobility, owing to the higher efficiency of the force transfer. Under the same energy, the increase in cross-link density allowed for faster force transfer, but only to a certain level. Finally, the overall amount of spiropyran-to-merocyanine conversion linearly decreased with increasing cross-link density.

Color-Switchable Polar Polymeric Materials

Spiropyran is an important mechanophore, which has rarely been incorporated as a cross-linker in polar polymer matrices, limiting its applications in innovative mechanochromic devices. Here, three spiropyrans with two- or three-attachment positions were synthesized and covalently bonded in polar poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA), to achieve color-switchable materials, triggered by light and when swollen in water. The negative photochromism in the dark and mechanical activation by swelling in water were investigated. Measurements of negative photochromism were conducted in solution and cross-linked PHEA bulk polymers, with both showing color reversibility when stored in the dark or on exposure to visible light. The force of swelling in water was sufficient to induce the ring-opening reaction of spiropyran. It was found that tri-substituted spiropyran (SP3) was less influenced by the polar matrix but showed the fastest color activation during swelling. SP3 also showed accelerated ring opening to the colored state during the swelling process. Bleaching rates and color switchability were investigated under swollen and dehydrated conditions. The effect of cross-link density on the swelling activation was explored to better understand the interaction between the mechanophore and the polar environment. The results demonstrated that influences from both the polar environment and the mechanochromic nature of spiropyran had an impact on the absorption intensity, rate of change, and the decoloration rate of the materials. This study provides the opportunity to manipulate the properties of spiropyrans to afford materials with a range of color-switching properties under different stimuli.

Surface-Functionalized Polystyrene Latexes Using Itaconate-Based Surfmers

Itaconic acid was readily transformed to a series of amphiphilic diesters via stepwise esterification of itaconic anhydride; the diesters carry one alkyl (cetyl or octyl) group and either a PEG, glyceryl, or dopamine segment. These diesters were used as surfmers for the preparation of polystyrene (PS) emulsions, with the expectation that the surface of the emulsion particles would carry PEG, glyceryl or dopamine units. NMR spectroscopic studies revealed that the surfmers were covalently incorporated into the polystyrene chains; furthermore, NMR tube polymerization experiments also confirmed that when the PEG surfmer was used, the PEG segments are indeed present on the surface of the emulsion particles. The size of the PEGlyated PS emulsions was readily varied from 35 to 140 nm by changing the mole fraction of surfmer used. In the case of the glyceryl and dopamine carrying surfmers, an octyl unit was used as the hydrophobic segment to ensure appropriate hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance; it was noticed that significantly larger mole fractions of the surfmers were required (15-20 mol %) to generate stable emulsions with particle sizes of about 150 nm. The PS emulsions carrying dopamine units on the surface were found to adhere to glass surfaces; thus suggesting that such "sticky" emulsion particles could be used to functionalize different types of surfaces. Finally, itaconate diesters bearing cetyl and perfluorooctyl segments were also prepared and shown to copolymerize with styrene to generate fluoroalkyl-enriched PS copolymers; these were used to generate hydrophobic coatings, with water contact angles of over 120°. Thus, itaconate-based surfmers are readily accessible alternatives for the preparation of emulsions with tailored size and surface functionality.

Rhodamine-Functionalized Mechanochromic and Mechanofluorescent Hydrogels with Enhanced Mechanoresponsive Sensitivity

Smart materials responsible to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, solvents, light, redox agents, and mechanical or electric/magnetic field, have drawn considerable attention recently. Herein, we described a novel rhodamine (Rh) mechanophore-based mechanoresponsive micellar hydrogel with excellent mechanochromic and mechanofluorescent properties. We found with astonishment that, due to the favorable activation of rhodamine spirolactam in the presence of water, together with the stress concentration effect, the mechanoresponsive sensitivity of this hydrogel was enhanced significantly. As a result, the stress needed to trigger the mechanochromic property of Rh in the hydrogel was much lower than in its native polymer matrix reported before. The hydrogel based on Rh, therefore, exhibited excellent mechanochromic property even at lower stress. Moreover, due to the reversibility of color on/off, the hydrogel based on Rh could be used as a reusable and erasable material for color printing/writing. Of peculiar importance is that the hydrogel could emit highly bright fluorescence under sufficient stress or strain. This suggested that the stress/strain of hydrogel could be detected quantificationally and effectively by the fluorescence data. We also found that the hydrogel could respond to acid/alkali and exhibited outstanding properties of acidichromism and acidifluorochromism. Up to now, hydrogels with such excellent mechanochromic and mechanofluorescent properties have rarely been reported. Our efforts may be essentially beneficial to the design of the mechanochromic and mechanofluorescent hydrogels with enhanced mechanoresponsive sensitivity, fostering their potential applications in a number of fields such as damage or stress/strain detection.

Multicolor Mechanochromic Polymer Blends That Can Discriminate between Stretching and Grinding

Mechanochromic polymers, which react to mechanical force by changing color, are expected to find applications in smart materials such as damage sensors. Although numerous types of mechanochromic polymers have been reported so far, developing mechanochromic polymers that can recognize different mechanical stimuli remains a formidable challenge. Materials that not only change their color in response to a mechanical stimulus but also detect its nature should be of great importance for practical applications. In this paper, we report our preliminary findings on multicolor mechanochromic polymer blends that can discriminate between two different mechanical stimuli, i.e., stretching and grinding, by simply blending two mechanochromic polymers with different architectures. The rational design and blending of two mechanochromic polymers with radical-type mechanochromophores embedded separately in positions adjacent to soft or hard domains made it possible to achieve multicolor mechanochromism in response to different stimuli. Electron paramagnetic resonance and solid-state UV-vis measurements supported the mechanism proposed for this discrimination.

Mechanochromic Polymers That Turn Green Upon the Dissociation of Diarylbibenzothiophenonyl: The Missing Piece toward Rainbow Mechanochromism

Mechanochromic polymers, that is, polymers sensitive to mechanical impact, promise great potential for applications in damage sensors. In particular, radical-type mechanochromic polymers, which produce colored radical species in response to mechanical stress, may enable not only the visualization of mechanical stress, but also its quantitative evaluation by electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Herein, a radical-type mechanochromic polymer that exhibits a color change from white to green upon dissociation of a diarylbibenzothiophenonyl moiety at the mid-point of a polystyrene chain is presented, and its mechanochromic behavior is examined. Mechanochromic materials that show a variety of colors ("rainbow colors") in response to mechanical stress were prepared by simply mixing radical-type mechanochromic polymers of primary colors.

Light, Force, and Heat: A Multi-Stimuli Composite that Reveals its Violent Past

A self-reporting polythiourethane/tetrapodal-ZnO (PTU/T-ZnO) composite is produced using spiropyran as an additive at a concentration as low as 0.5 wt %. Exposure to heat, UV light and mechanical force caused the spiropyran to undergo reversible isomerization indicated by a reversible color change. The studies have been conducted with a constant spiropyran concentration at 0.5 wt %, meanwhile varying the T-ZnO concentration from 0 to 7.5 wt %. The tetrapodal ZnO served as a prism: the light scattering effect of T-ZnO created a visual impression of uniform color distribution. The interconnected network of the tetrapodal of ZnO embedded in the PTU matrix enhanced the mechanical stability of the polymer leading to high impact resistance up to ∼232 kPa. PTU/spiropyran also emerged as a possible thermal sensing coating, due to its temperature sensitivity. Due to the broad green luminescence band (∼535 nm) in T-ZnO, the colored merocyanine form which absorbs in this region of the spectrum switches back to spiropyran at this wavelength. High concentrations of T-ZnO were shown to reduce the effect one of the switching triggers i.e., ultraviolet light. Using this property of T-ZnO it was possible to achieve a switchable system with the possibility of separating the stimuli.
