Hybrid Triazine-Boron Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks: Synthesis, Characterization, and DFT Approach to Layer Interaction Energies

A review of recent advancement in covalent organic framework (COFs) synthesis and characterization with a focus on their applications in antibacterial activity

The primary objective of this review is to present a comprehensive examination of the synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial applications of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). COFs represent a distinct category of porous materials characterized by a blend of advantageous features, including customizable pore dimensions, substantial surface area, and adaptable chemical properties. These attributes position COFs as promising contenders for various applications, notably in the realm of antibacterial activity. COFs exhibit considerable potential in the domain of antibacterial applications, owing to their amenability to functionalization with antibacterial agents. The scientific community is actively exploring COFs that have been imbued with metal ions, such as copper or silver, given their observed robust antibacterial properties. These investigations strongly suggest that COFs could be harnessed effectively as potent antibacterial agents across a diverse array of applications. Finally, COFs hold immense promise as a novel class of materials for antibacterial applications, shedding light on the synthesis, characterization, and functionalization of COFs tailored for specific purposes. The potential of COFs as effective antibacterial agents beckons further exploration and underscores their potential to revolutionize antibacterial strategies in various domains.

Effect of interlayer slipping on the geometric, thermal and adsorption properties of 2D covalent organic frameworks: a comprehensive review based on computational modelling studies

Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) are a class of crystalline porous organic polymers, consisting of 2D-planar sheets stacked together perpendicularly via noncovalent forces. Since their discovery, 2D-COFs have attracted extensive attention for optoelectronic and adsorption applications. Owing to the layer stacking nature of 2D COFs, various new slipped structures that are energetically favourable can be designed. These interlayer slipped structures are actively responsible for tuning (mostly enhancing) the optoelectronic properties, thermal properties, and mechanical strength of 2D COFs. This review summarizes the effect of interlayer slipping on the energetic stability, electronic behaviour and gas adsorption properties of 2D layered COFs, which is explained through computational modelling simulations. Since computational modelling offers a deep insight into electronic behaviour at the atomic scale, which is potentially impossible through experimental techniques, the introduction and role of computational techniques in such studies have also been described.

Fluorescent covalent organic frameworks for environmental pollutant detection sensors and enrichment sorbents: a mini-review

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials based on organic building blocks containing light elements, such as C, H, O, N, and B, interconnected by covalent bonds. Because of their regular crystal structure, high porosity, stable mechanical structure, satisfactory specific surface area, easy functionalization, and high tunability, they have important applications in several fields. Currently, most of the established methods based on COFs can only be used for individual detection or adsorption of the target. Impressively, fluorescent COFs as a special member of the COF family are able to achieve highly selective and sensitive detection of target pollutants by fluorescence enhancement or quenching. The construction of a dual-functional platform for detection and adsorption based on fluorescent COFs can enable the simultaneous realization of visual monitoring and adsorption of target pollutants. Therefore, this paper reviews the research progress of fluorescent COFs as fluorescence sensors and adsorbents. First, the fluorescent COFs were classified according to the different bonding modes between the building blocks, and then the applications of fluorescent COF-based detection and adsorption bifunctional materials for various environmental contaminants were highlighted. Finally, the challenges and future application prospects of fluorescent COFs are discussed.

Covalent organic framework wrapped by graphene oxide as an efficient sulfur host for high performance lithium-sulfur batteries

The practical application of lithium-sulfur battery is seriously limited by the loss of active substances and the deterioration of cycle stability caused by the 'shuttle effect' of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). In this work, graphene oxide (GO) coated covalent organic framework (COF) compound materials were synthesized as sulfur host material in spray-drying process. The polar groups on COF can efficiently adsorb LiPSs through lithiophilic interaction, which can reduce the 'shuttle effect' caused by soluble LiPSs. Besides, GO in the outer layer can wrap discrete sulfur to reduce the loss of active substances, which further improves the cycle stability of the cathode. The COF@GO/S cathode exhibits a high initial specific capacity of 848.4 mAh g^-1and retains a capacity of 601.1 mAh g^-1after 500 cycles at 1 C counting with a low capacity fading of 0.058% per cycle.

Two-Dimensional Polymers and Polymerizations

Synthetic chemists have developed robust methods to synthesize discrete molecules, linear and branched polymers, and disordered cross-linked networks. However, two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) prepared from designed monomers have been long missing from these capabilities, both as objects of chemical synthesis and in nature. Recently, new polymerization strategies and characterization methods have enabled the unambiguous realization of covalently linked macromolecular sheets. Here we review 2DPs and 2D polymerization methods. Three predominant 2D polymerization strategies have emerged to date, which produce 2DPs either as monolayers or multilayer assemblies. We discuss the fundamental understanding and scope of each of these approaches, including: the bond-forming reactions used, the synthetic diversity of 2DPs prepared, their multilayer stacking behaviors, nanoscale and mesoscale structures, and macroscale morphologies. Additionally, we describe the analytical tools currently available to characterize 2DPs in their various isolated forms. Finally, we review emergent 2DP properties and the potential applications of planar macromolecules. Throughout, we highlight achievements in 2D polymerization and identify opportunities for continued study.

Boronate Covalent and Hybrid Organic Frameworks Featuring PIII and P=O Lewis Base Sites

Two covalent organic frameworks comprising Lewis basic PIII centers and Lewis acidic boron atoms were prepared by poly-condensation reactions of newly obtained tris(4-diisopropoxyborylphenyl)phosphine with 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene and 2,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-9,10-dimethylanthracene. Obtained materials exhibit significant sorption of dihydrogen (100 cm3  g-1 at 1 bar at 77 K), methane (20 cm3  g-1 at 1 bar at 273 K) and carbon dioxide (50 cm3  g-1 at 1 bar at 273 K). They were exploited as solid-state ligands for coordination of Pd0 centers. Alternatively, in a bottom-up approach, boronated phosphine was treated with Pd2 dba3 and poly-condensated, yielding hybrid materials where the polymer networks are formed by means of covalent boronate linkages and coordination P-Pd bonds. In addition, the analogous materials based on phosphine oxide were synthesized. The DFT calculations on framework-guest interactions revealed that the behavior of adjacent boron and phosphorus/phosphine oxide centers is reminiscent of that found in Frustrated Lewis Pairs and may improve sorption of selected molecules.

A ferrocene-templated Pd-bearing molecular reactor

High-yield, chromatography-free syntheses of a ferrocene-templated molecular cage and its Pd-bearing derivative are presented. The formation of a symmetric cage-type structure was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Pd-bearing cage was used as an innovative catalyst for the efficient synthesis of 1,1'-biphenyls under mild conditions. The presented catalyst is reusable and 1,1'-biphenyls can be obtained efficiently in a gram scale process.

Metal-free activation of molecular oxygen by covalent triazine frameworks for selective aerobic oxidation

Oxygen activation is a critical step in ubiquitous heterogeneous oxidative processes, most prominently in catalysis, electrolysis, and pharmaceutical applications. We present here our findings on metal-free O2 activation on covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) as an important class of N-rich materials. The O2 activation process was studied for the formation of aldehydes, ketones and imines. A detailed mechanistic study of O2 activation and the role of nitrogen heteroatoms were comprehensively investigated. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and control experiments provide strong evidence for the reaction mechanism proving the applicability of the CTFs to activate oxygen into superoxide species. This report highlights the importance of a self-templating procedure to introduce N functionalities for the development of metal-free catalytic materials. The presented findings reveal an important step toward the use of CTFs as inexpensive and high-performance alternatives to metal-based materials not only for catalysis but also for biorelated applications dealing with O2 activation.

Recent advances in the construction of functionalized covalent organic frameworks and their applications to sensing

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as an emerging class of porous crystalline polymers, are built by the combination of the light elements through the strong covalent bonds. In the past decade, COFs have been reported to show plenty of unique properties (such as ordered channels, large specific surface area, highly tunable porosity, optional building blocks, predictable and stable structure, and abundant functional groups), and have been widely applied in multiple fields. Recently, to further improve the potential performances of COFs and extend their applicability, a number of COFs with various functionalities have been successfully developed through the functionalization modification. In this review, we summarized the advanced design and construction of functionalized COFs, including COFs with post-synthetic modification, COFs-based composites (e.g. COFs-metal nanoparticles composites, COFs-metal oxide nanoparticles composites, COFs-MOFs composites, and COFs-enzyme composites), and molecularly imprinted COFs. Impressively, the applications of functionalized COFs to sensing also have been comprehensively summarized, including colorimetric sensing, fluorescent sensing, electrochemical sensing, and other sensing (such as quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensing, photoelectrochemical sensing, and humidity sensing). In the end, future opportunities and challenges in this promising field are tentatively proposed.

Ionic Porous Organic Polymers Based on Functionalized Tetraarylborates

Lithium tetrakis(4-boronatoaryl)borates were subjected to polycondensation reactions with selected polyhydroxyl monomers such as 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) and 2,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-9,10-dimethylanthracene (THDMA). Obtained boronate-type ionic porous polymers TAB1–4 were characterized by PXRD, ⁶Li and ¹¹B magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), FT-IR, SEM, and TGA. They exhibit relatively good sorption of H₂ (up to 75 cm³/g STP), whereas N₂ uptake at 77 K for lower pressure range is relatively poor (up to 50 cm³/g STP below P/P₀ = 0.8). In addition, the effect of elongation of aryl arms in the tetraarylborate core on the materials’ properties was studied. Thus, it was found that replacement of the 4-boronatophenyl with 4-boronatobiphenylyl group has a negative impact on the sorption characteristics.

A hybrid triazine-imine core-shell magnetic covalent organic polymer for analysis of pesticides in fruit samples by ultra high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry

A novel hybrid triazine-imine core-shell magnetic covalent organic polymer with high adsorption capacity and excellent stability was fabricated by surface-assisted in situ growth technique. The composite possesses porous and extended π-conjugated system, and was applied as the magnetic sorbent for efficient enrichment and rapid separation of pesticides. A new analytical method for simultaneous determination of eight pesticides in fruit samples was developed by magnetic solid phase extraction combined with ultra high performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. The effect of extraction time, desorption time, and the type of desorption solvent on the extraction efficiency were evaluated. The established method shows good repeatability and high sensitivity. The repeatability of this method was estimated with relative standard deviations in the range of 0.7-7.0% (n = 5) for the same batch, and 1.7-10% (n = 3) for batch to batch. Good linearity for eight pesticides was obtained with coefficient of determination in the range of 0.9942-0.9990. Limit of detections ranged from 0.4 to 1.2 ng/L. Real sample determination showed that four and two pesticides were detected in strawberry and grape, respectively. The results demonstrated that the established method was efficient, sensitive, and convenient for trace determination of pesticides in fruit samples.

Self-Assembling Hydrophilic Magnetic Covalent Organic Framework Nanospheres as a Novel Matrix for Phthalate Ester Recognition

The development of covalent organic framework (COF)-derived materials with additional functions and applications is highly desired. In this work, a unique COF-functionalized hydrophilic magnetic nanosphere (Fe₃O₄@PDA@TbBd) with Fe₃O₄ as a magnetic core, polydopamine (PDA) as a hydrophilic middle layer, and TbBd as an outer COF shell was facilely prepared as a novel hydrophilic platform for efficient detection of phthalic acid esters (PAEs). The resultant Fe₃O₄@PDA@TbBd nanosphere displayed strong magnetic response, high surface area, and good hydrophilicity. Accordingly, the newly synthesized COF exhibited great potential in phthalate analysis with a wide linearity (50-8000 ng/mL), good recovery (92.3-98.9%), a low limit of detection (0.0025-0.01 ng/mL), and a small relative standard deviation (for intraday less than 4.6% and for interday less than 6.8%). More excitingly, the new COF was applied to analyze nine PAEs in the human plasma sample. This work opens up new avenues for the development and application of functionalized COF-derived materials.
