Abstract
Superhydrophobic materials have been widely applied in oil-water separation, self-cleaning, antifouling, and drag reduction; however, their role in liquid evaporation and drying remains unexplored. Inspired by the microstructure of the nonwetting legs of water striders, we designed a low-adhesion superhydrophobic cylindrical barrel (CB) derived from stainless-steel mesh (SSM) to enhance liquid thermal evaporation and drying. The CB was created by hydrothermally depositing zinc oxide (ZnO) with multilevel morphologies onto metal wires, followed by modification with low-surface-energy stearic acid (SA). We investigated the impact of the SSMCB on water evaporation and analyzed the decline in the liquid levels under varying porosities and temperatures through numerical normalization. A functional relationship was established between decline height, porosity, and temperature, revealing that the drop height increased from 3.7 to 25 mm as porosity increased from 0 to 0.5263. Moreover, the superhydrophobic coating demonstrated excellent resistance to friction and peeling, indicating improved mechanical stability.

Abstract
Frequent oil spills and the discharge of oily wastewaters have caused a serious threat to the environment, ecosystems, and human beings. Herein, a photothermal and superhydrophobic melamine sponge (MS) decorated with MXene and lignin particles has been prepared for the separation of oil/water mixtures, the recovery of crude oils, and active deicing. The obtained superhydrophobic melamine sponge shows a water contact angle (WCA) of 152.3° and an oil contact angle of ∼0° and possesses good chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of being immersed in various liquids (i.e., corrosive solutions, organic solvents, and boiling water) and being abrased by sandpapers. This superhydrophobic MS displays a high oil adsorption capacity of CCl4, up to 91.6 times its own weight and a high separation efficiency of 99.4%. Furthermore, the maximum surface temperature of the superhydrophobic MS reaches 57.5 °C under sunlight irradiation (1.0 kW/m2) due to the excellent photothermal heating conversion performance of MXene and lignin particles. When exposed to sunlight, the superhydrophobic MS can quickly absorb viscous crude oils up to 72 times its own weight. Also, the WCA of the superhydrophobic MS remains above 146° after 50 icing/deicing cycles, showing excellent photothermal anti-icing properties. Thus, this study presents an easy and low-cost method for designing photothermal superhydrophobic melamine sponges and opens a new avenue to the applications of efficient oil/water separation, fast crude oil recovery, and active deicing.

Abstract
The current study presents a simple and cost-competitive method for the development of high-performance superhydrophobic and superoleophilic cotton fabrics coated with cadmium oxide/cerotic acid (CdO/CE)-polycaprolactone (PCL)- and cadmium oxide/stearic acid (CdO/ST)-polycaprolactone-grafted hybrid composites. X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are used to characterize the CdO/CE-PCL and CdO/ST-PCL and polycaprolactone-modified cotton fabrics. Using an optical contact angle meter, the wetting behavior of corrosive liquids such as coffee, milk, tea, water dyed with methylene blue, strong acids (HCl), strong alkali (NaOH), and saturated salt solution (NaCl) on the CdO-CE/ST/PCL-modified cotton fabrics is assessed as well as the durability of CdO-CE/ST/PCL-modified cotton fabrics in corrosive liquids. Data obtained from the oil-water separation experiment indicate remarkable separation efficiency with oil purity values of ≥99.97 wt %, and high permeation flux values of up to 11,700 ± 300 L m-2 h-1 are observed for surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions via a gravity-driven technique. From the data obtained, it is concluded that the nano-CdO-grafted superhydrophobic hybrid polymer composite-coated cotton fabrics (CdO-ST/(CE)/PCL/CFs) can be utilized for self-cleaning and oil/water separation applications.

Abstract
Due to frequent petrochemical spills, environmental pollution and the threat of secondary marine fires have arisen, necessitating an urgent need for petrochemical spill treatment strategies with high-performance oil-water separation capabilities. To address the challenges of poor durability, instability in hydrophobic conditions, and difficulty in absorbing high-viscosity crude oil associated with hydrophobic absorbent materials, the authors of this study took inspiration from the unique micro and nanostructures of springtails' water-repellent skin. We engineered a superhydrophobic melamine sponge using interfacial assembly techniques designated as Si@PBA@PDA@MS. This material demonstrated improved mechanical and chemical durability, enhanced photothermal performance, and reduced fire risk. The metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived cobalt-iron Prussian blue analog (CoFe-PBA) was firmly anchored to the sponge framework by the chelation of cobalt ions using polydopamine (PDA). The results demonstrated that Si@PBA@PDA@MS demonstrated excellent superhydrophobicity (WCA=163.5°) and oil absorption capacity (53.4-97.5 g/g), maintaining high durability even after 20 cycles of absorption-squeezing. Additionally, it could still exhibit excellent mechanical properties, hydrophobic stability, and absorption performance across a wide temperature range (0-100 °C), pH range (1-14), and high compression strength (ε = 80%), with excellent mechanical/chemical durability. Furthermore, Si@PBA@PDA@MS demonstrated remarkable photothermal performance and low fire risk, offering efficient, safe, and sustainable practical value for effective petrochemical spill treatment.

Abstract
The ability of a superhydrophobic fabric to stay dry and clean has aroused great interest in daily life. Especially, the development of an eco-friendly non-fluorinated water-repellent textile has become a hot topic in recent years. We present a green strategy to achieve self-cleaning textile by in situ deposition of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles on cotton with subsequent polydimethylsiloxane modification. The prepared cotton fabric exhibits superior water repellency with a water contact angle of 157°. Meanwhile, this superhydrophobic surface can easily be ruined by oil contaminants and then exhibit a decreased water contact angle of 0°. However, the oil-contaminated surface can recover its water repellency after being irradiated. After six cycles of contamination using oleic acid and successive photodegradation, the fabric surface remains superhydrophobic. The obtained superhydrophobic surface does not adversely affect the fabric's strength and air permeability. Therefore, the developed superhydrophobic cotton fabrics have the potential to be used in a variety of industrial scenarios and in daily life.

Abstract
The industrialization witnessed in the last century has resulted in an unprecedented increase in water pollution. In particular, the water pollution induced by oil contaminants from oil spill accidents, as well as discharges from pharmaceutical, oil/gas, and metal processing industries, have raised concerns due to their potential to pose irreversible threats to the ecosystems. Therefore, the effective treating of these large volumes of oily wastewater is an inevitable challenge to address. Separating oil-water mixtures by membranes has been an attractive technology due to the high oil removal efficiency and low energy consumption. However, conventional oil-water separation membranes may not meet the complex requirements for the sustainable treatment of wastewater due to their relatively shorter life cycle, lower chemical and thermal stability, and permeability/selectivity trade-off. Recent advancements in two-dimensional (2D) materials have provided opportunities to address these challenges. In this article, we provide a brief review of the most recent advancements in oil-water separation membranes modified with 2D materials, with a focus on MXenes, graphenes, metal-organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks. The review briefly covers the backgrounds, concepts, fabrication methods, and the most recent representative studies. Finally, the review concludes by describing the challenges and future research directions.

Abstract
Considering the serious damage to aquatic ecosystems and marine life caused by oil spills and oily wastewater discharge, efficient, environment-friendly and sustainable oil/water separation technology has become an inevitable trend for current development. Herein, fabrics are recognized as eco-friendly materials for water treatment due to their good degradability and low cost. Particularly, fabrics with rough structures and natural hydrophilicity/oleophilicity enable the construction of superwetting surfaces for the selective separation of oil/water mixtures and even complex emulsions. Therefore, superwetting fabrics for efficiently solving oil spills and purifying oily wastewater have received extensive attention. Especially, Janus and smart fabrics are highly anticipated to enable the on-demand and sustainable treatment of oil spills and oily wastewater due to their changeable wettability. Moreover, the fabrication of superwetting fabrics with multifunctional performances for oily wastewater purification can further promote their practical industrial applications, such as photocatalytic, self-cleaning, and self-healing characteristics. However, some potential challenges still exist, which urgently need to be systematically summarized to guide the future development of this research field. In this review, firstly, the fundamental theories of wettability and the separation mechanisms based on special wettability are discussed. Then, superwetting fabrics for efficient oil/water separation are systematically reviewed, such as superhydrophobic/superoleophilic (SHB/SOL), superhydrophilic/superoleophobic (SHL/SOB), SHL/underwater superoleophobic (SHL/UWSOB), and UWSOB/underoil superoleophobic (UWSOB/UOSHB) fabrics. Most importantly, we highlight Janus, smart, and multifunctional fabrics based on their superwetting property. Correspondingly, the advantages and disadvantages of each superwetting fabric are comprehensively analyzed. Besides, super-antiwetting fabrics with superhydrophobic/superoleophobic (SHB/SOB) property are also introduced. Finally, the challenges and future research directions are explained.

Abstract
Removal of organic solvents and heavy metals in effluents is of great significance to environmental pollution control and ecological civilization construction. pH-responsive materials have unique advantages in treating complicated oily wastewater. In this work, an intelligent pH-responsive nonwoven fabric with excellent reversible wettability was prepared. The pH-sensitive polymer was synthesized by free radical polymerization (FRP) technique, then dipped with SiO2 on PP fabric. The particular molecular structure of poly (dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) enabled the fabric surface to switch wettability rapidly between hydrophilic/underwater oleophobic and oleophobic/hydrophobic under pH stimulus and exhibit controllable selective separation of various oil/water mixtures. Furthermore, the fabric removed Pb2+ efficiently under a wide pH range. The experimetal results showed that the separation flux reached 19,229 ± 1656.43 L-h-1-m-2 for water and 19,342 ± 1796.77 L-m-2-h-1 for n-hexane. Besides, the obtained fabric effectively realized the separation and collection process of complex ternary mixtures. The fabric removed Pb2+ in solutions with efficiency up to 90.83%. After immersing in acid and alkali solutions for 24 h, no significant damage to the surface wettability. This economical and intelligent fabric is able to meet the different separation purposes of industrial wastewaters with complex compositions.

Abstract
Recent advancements in separation and membrane technologies have shown a great potential in removing oil from wastewaters effectively. In addition, the capabilities have improved to fabricate membranes with tunable properties in terms of their wettability, permeability, antifouling, and mechanical properties that govern the treatment of oily wastewaters. Herein, authors have critically reviewed the literature on membrane technology for oil/water separation with a specific focus on: 1) membrane properties and characterization, 2) development of various materials (e.g., organic, inorganic, and hybrid membranes, and innovative materials), 3) membranes design (e.g., mixed matrix nanocomposite and multilayers), and 4) membrane fabrication techniques and surface modification techniques. The current challenges and future research directions in materials and fabrication techniques for membrane technology applications in oil/water separation are also highlighted. Thus, this review provides helpful guidance toward finding more effective, practical, and scalable solutions to tackle environmental pollution by oils.

Abstract
Surfaces with controllable and gradient wettability often require an elaborate design of the microstructure or its response under electrical, thermal, optical, pH, and other stimuli. Generally, the wettability change under these physical or chemical effects relies on a complex mechanism that is difficult to be quantitatively described. In this study, an online controlling strategy for surface wettability and the corresponding theoretical model are put forward based on a bilayer graphene-like atomic structure. Molecular dynamics results indicate that the surface wettability varies toward hydrophilicity after sticking a bottom material regardless of its wettability. But such an influence becomes weak with increasing interlayer distance, and the overall wettability approaches that of the upper layer material gradually. This variation is elucidated by the increase of the work of adhesion, providing new insight into the wetting transparency of graphene. A theoretical model of the governing relationship is established based on the work of adhesion, which correlates the overall surface wettability with the interlayer distance and the wettabilities of individual materials. Moreover, a surface with a uniform wettability gradient is achieved by inclining the bottom material. The spontaneous and steady motion of droplets can be induced by this gradient wettability. The relevant speedup behavior is evaluated through a theoretical model considering the varying interlayer distance, which reveals the critical role of the lower layer. This study proposes a novel strategy for controllable wetting and relevant gradient surfaces using prevailing two-dimensional materials, paving new routes to many applications such as microfluidic chips, virus diagnosis, and intelligent sensors.

Abstract
Selective filtration based on superwetting materials has brought about widespread attention in the field of oil/water separation. In this study, a ZIF-L@8-coated stainless steel mesh (ZIF-L@8-coated SSM) was prepared via in situ growth of two-dimensional leaf-shaped ZIF-L nanosheets on SSM, followed by heterogeneous epitaxial growth of ZIF-8 on a ZIF-L coating. The synthesized ZIF-L@8-coated SSM with a hierarchical micro/nanoscale structure exhibited outstanding switchable wettability between underwater superoleophobicity and underoil superhydrophobicity upon respective prewetting using water and oil without additional external stimuli. It possessed excellent separation performances and stabilities with respect to various types of oil/water mixtures. The switchable wettability mechanism was analyzed and elucidated in detail. The synthesized ZIF-L@8-coated SSM with switchable wettability in this study would have great potential in on-demand oil/water separation.

Abstract
Oceanic oil spill and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters can cause significant threats to the ecological environment and human health. Herein, we design a durable TiO2/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper for efficient oil/water separation. Bioinspired from mussel adhesive proteins, the mechanical durability of the as-prepared superhydrophobic paper is enhanced by the deposition of polydopamine (PDA) onto cellulosic fibers via self-polymerization of dopamine. The TiO2/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper shows a high water contact angle of 168.2° and an oil contact angle of ∼0°, exhibiting excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. Furthermore, the as-prepared superhydrophobic paper possesses excellent chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of being immersed in corrosive solutions and solvents and boiling water and being subjected to the sandpaper abrasion test, respectively. More importantly, the separation efficiency of the TiO2/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper for an oil/water mixture is 97.2%, and it maintains a separation efficiency above 94.3% even after 15 cyclic separation processes. Furthermore, the separation efficiency for water-in-oil emulsions is higher than 93.7% after 15 cyclic separation tests, showing its excellent recyclable stability for water-in-oil emulsions. Therefore, the rationally designed TiO2/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper shows great potential in the practical applications of self-cleaning, antifouling, and oil/water separation.

Abstract
The limited robustness and complex preparation process greatly hinder the large-scale use of superhydrophobic surfaces in real life. In this work, we adopt a simple method to prepare robust fluorine-free superhydrophobic cotton fabrics by a facile dip-coating method based on silica microparticles and titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Microparticles and nanoparticles are used to build a suitable rough hierarchical structure, while strong bonds are formed between fabric and particles by a silane coupling agent. The cross-linking reaction between the isocyanate group of trimers of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and the hydroxyl group of each component in the condensation reaction further increases the bonding between the coating and the cotton fabric. In addition, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is used as a low-surface-energy material to modify the fabric surface. The resulting coating shows excellent superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle of 161.7°. Meanwhile, the prepared superhydrophobic fabric exhibits excellent durability and stability after sandpaper wearing, washing, and UV radiation, as well as treatment with various organic solutions, boiling water and different pH solutions. Moreover, the superhydrophobic fabric displays excellent UV protection performance and high oil-water separation efficiency (>99% after 30 cycles) with ultrahigh flux up to 20 850 L m-2 h-1.

Abstract
Smart surfaces with switchable wettability are widely studied for environmental application. Although a large number of stimulation routes provide broad prospects for the development of smart surfaces, achieving high sensitivity, fast response and recovery, simple operation, security and good stability is still challenging. Herein, a Janus membrane via electrospinning, chemical bath deposition and heat treatment is constructed. By using the hydrophilic ZIF-L nanosheet to functionalize the hydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) substrate, a smart surface utilizes the ZIF-L crack induced by strain in the hydrophilic layer to control surface wettability is obtained. In the range of 0%-100% strain, the wettability of the smart surface presents an obvious change with stretching, and water contact angle of the surface shows a monotonic increase with a maximum tuning range from 47° to 114°. Due to local fusion of the TPU microfibers and good binding between the ZIF-L layer and the TPU substrate after heat treatment, the prepared Janus membrane exhibits consistent and symmetrical hydrophilic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic transition curves in 50 stretching-releasing cycles. Thanks to the porous and asymmetric architecture, the membrane shows good oil-water separation performance, and the separation flux increases with the increase of strain, while the separation efficiency is always higher than 98%. Because of the excellent structural stability, the robust membrane with 100% strain maintains its oil-water separation property for 50 stretching-releasing cycles. This study provides a new perspective for the development of smart material with stimuli responsive surface for oily wastewater purification.

Abstract
Oily wastewater and oil spills pose a threat to the environment and human health, and porous sponge materials are highly desired for oil/water separation. Herein, we design a new superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO2-decorated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge material for efficient oil/water separation. The TiO2-PVA sponge is obtained by firmly anchoring TiO2 nanoparticles onto the skeleton surface of pristine PVA sponge via the cross-linking reactions between TiO2 nanoparticles and H3BO3 and KH550, followed by the chemical modification of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane. The as-prepared TiO2-PVA sponge shows a high water contact angle of 157° (a sliding angle of 5.5°) and an oil contact angle of ∼0°, showing excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. The TiO2-PVA sponge exhibits excellent chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of immersing it in the corrosive solutions and solvents, boiling it in water, and the sandpaper abrasion test. Moreover, the as-prepared TiO2-PVA sponge possesses excellent absorption capacity of oils or organic solvents ranging from 4.3 to 13.6 times its own weight. More importantly, the as-prepared TiO2-PVA sponge can separate carbon tetrachloride from the oil-water mixture with a separation efficiency of 97.8% with the aid of gravity and maintains a separation efficiency of 96.5% even after 15 cyclic oil/water separation processes. Therefore, the rationally designed superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO2-PVA sponge shows great potential in practical applications of dealing with oily wastewater and oil spills.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive surfaces with wettability change between superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic are susceptible to oil contamination which often ruins the surface. Herein, a coating with pH-switchable wettability transition between superamphiphobic and superhydrophilic-superoleophobic is achieved by rationally designing oleophobic/pH-responsive polymer heterogeneous chemistry. Fabrics modified with this coating show repellency to both water and oils, while upon exposure to acidic water (pH = 1) the fabrics change to be superhydrophilic-superoleophobic within a short response time of <5 s. More importantly, the superamphiphobicity of the fabric can be restored under mild alkaline condition (pH = 10), and the transition is reversible for many cycles. The effective in situ or ex situ wettability change under acidic/alkaline water treatment makes the coated fabric capable of separating oil-water mixture or even some mixtures of immiscible organic solvents. In addition, the coated fabric is also demonstrated to be promising as a new class of functional fabrics that provide protection against water and many oils in one condition, and can change to be hygroscopic, anti-static, oil-repellent and anti-oil-fouling in the other condition for improved wear comfort and self-cleaning.

Abstract
Oil spill accidents and oily wastewater discharged by petrochemical industries have severely wasted water resources and damaged the environment. The use of special wetting materials to separate oil and water is efficient and environment-friendly. Cellulose is the most abundant renewable resource and has natural advantages in removing pollutants from oily wastewater. The application and modification of cellulose as special wetting materials have attracted considerable research attention. Therefore, we summarized cellulose-based superlipophilic/superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic/superoleophobic materials exhibiting special wetting properties for oil/water separation. The treatment mechanism, preparation technology, treatment effect, and representative projects of oil-bearing wastewater are discussed. Moreover, cellulose-based intelligent-responsive materials for application to oil/water separation and the removal of other pollutants from oily wastewater have also been summarized. The prospects and potential challenges of all the materials have been highlighted.

Abstract
In order to satisfy the needs of different applications and more complex intelligent devices, smart control of surface wettability will be necessary and desirable, which gradually become a hot spot and focus in the field of interface wetting. Herein, we review interfacial wetting states related to switchable wettability on superwettable materials, including several classical wetting models and liquid adhesive behaviors based on the surface of natural creatures with special wettability. This review mainly focuses on the recent developments of the smart surfaces with switchable wettability and the corresponding regulatory mechanisms under external stimuli, which is mainly governed by the transformation of surface chemical composition and geometrical structures. Among that, various external stimuli such as physical stimulation (temperature, light, electric, magnetic, mechanical stress), chemical stimulation (pH, ion, solvent) and dual or multi-triggered stimulation have been sought out to realize the regulation of surface wettability. Moreover, we also summarize the applications of smart surfaces in different fields, such as oil/water separation, programmable transportation, anti-biofouling, detection and delivery, smart soft robotic etc. Furthermore, current limitations and future perspective in the development of smart wetting surfaces are also given. This review aims to offer deep insights into the recent developments and responsive mechanisms in smart biomimetic surfaces with switchable wettability under external various stimuli, so as to provide a guidance for the design of smart surfaces and expand the scope of both fundamental research and practical applications.

Abstract
Human fingers exhibit both high sensitivity and wide tactile range. The finger skin structures are designed to display gradient microstructures and compressibility. Inspired by the gradient mechanical Young's modulus distribution, an electric-field-induced cationic crosslinker migration strategy is demonstrated to prepare gradient ionogels. Due to the gradient of the crosslinkers, the ionogels exhibit more than four orders of magnitude difference between the anode and the cathode side, enabling gradient ionogel-based flexible iontronic sensors having high-sensitivity and broader-range detection (from 3 × 102 to 2.5 × 106 Pa) simultaneously. Moreover, owing to the remarkable properties of the gradient ionogels, the flexible iontronic sensors also show good long-time stability (even after 10 000 cycles loadings) and excellent performance over a wide temperature range (from -108 to 300 °C). The flexible iontronic sensors are further integrated on soft grips, exhibiting remarkable performance under various conditions. These attractive features demonstrate that gradient ionogels will be promising candidates for smart sensor applications in complex and extreme conditions.

Abstract
A surge of effort has been devoted to establishing super-wetting membranes with versatility for oily waste water purification. However, persistent challenge remains the lower separation flux. Moreover, the majorities of catalysts are only adsorbed on the surface and easily fall off after multiple cyclic separations. In this work, an effective strategy has been taken to construct a composite membrane consisting of polyacrylic acid functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs-PAA) and MIL101(Fe)@platinum nanoparticles (MIL101(Fe)@Pt NPs). The obtained CNTs-PAA/MIL101(Fe)@Pt composite membrane can achieve degradation of dye molecules and at the same time effective separation of oil-in-water emulsions. The separation throughput of this composite membrane can reach up to 11000 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, which has exceeded most of the previous reported multifunctional separation membranes. Furthermore, this composite membrane has presented stable mechanical property and excellent anti-corrosion ability. This work gives comprehensive consideration to excellent separation performance, versatility and stability, which could have potential applications in practical oily wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Hydrophobic membranes used in membrane distillation (MD) systems are often subject to wetting during long-term operation. Thus, it is of great importance to fully understand factors that influence the wettability of hydrophobic membranes and their impact on the overall separation efficiency that can be achieved in MD systems. This Critical Review summarizes both fundamental and applied aspects of membrane wetting with particular emphasis on interfacial interaction between the membrane and solutes in the feed solution. First, the theoretical background of surface wetting, including the relationship between wettability and interfacial interaction, definition and measurement of contact angle, surface tension, surface free energy, adhesion force, and liquid entry pressure, is described. Second, the nature of wettability, membrane wetting mechanisms, influence of membrane properties, feed characteristics and operating conditions on membrane wetting, and evolution of membrane wetting are reviewed in the context of an MD process. Third, specific membrane features that increase resistance to wetting (e.g., superhydrophobic, omniphobic, and Janus membranes) are discussed briefly followed by the comparison of various cleaning approaches to restore membrane hydrophobicity. Finally, challenges with the prevention of membrane wetting are summarized, and future work is proposed to improve the use of MD technology in a variety of applications.

Abstract
The oil and bacteria adhesion during membrane separation process brings great challenges to the operation costs and membrane service life. Meantime, the strong chemical corrosion in sewage seriously limits the durability of membrane as well. Herein, a facile strategy is developed for fabricating highly stable and efficient zwitterionic nanofibrous membrane (NFM) with self-cleaning feature via the combination of in-situ cross-linking of poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) and electrospun poly (ether sulfone) (PES) nanofibers. Owing to the introduction of zwitterionic functional groups, the PSBMA/PES NFM exhibits superior antifouling ability (over 3 cycles of crude oil fouling/self-cleaning and up to 7 days of bacteria adhesion/repelling tests). Moreover, the membrane also presents remarkable chemical stability in acidic, alkaline and salty environments; and exhibits excellent separation performance for both layered oil/water mixture and oil-in-water emulsion as well. Furthermore, the membrane is capable to remove bacteria during the continuous oil/water mixture separation. Overall, the proposed strategy provides a new perspective into developing long-term antifouling membrane materials for complicated oily wastewater remediation in various corrosive environments.

Abstract
Antimony selenide (Sb2 Se3 ) nanostructures enable bifunctional water purification by a single membrane through i) physical separation of water-insoluble oil and ii) photoelectrocatalytic degradation of water-soluble organic compounds. Sb2 Se3 nanorods with exposed surfaces of {h 0 0} and {h 0 l} planes exhibit superhydrophobicity (water contact angle of ≈159°) owing to extremely low surface energy of those dangling-bond-free van der Waals planes. Based on crystallographic understanding, superhydrophobic Sb2 Se3 nanorods were produced on a mesh-type substrate for utilization as a membrane for physical water/oil separation. Sb2 Se3 exhibited an optimal photocathodic response with p-type electrical conductivity under visible light along the longitudinal crystal direction. This indicated that the nanorods could be used as photoelectrocatalytic material for chemical water purification. A smart membrane with Sb2 Se3 nanostructures was proposed as a candidate for integrated water purification that can simultaneously accomplish water/oil separation and photoelectrocatalytic degradation of organic compounds in wastewater. Linear sweep voltammetry measurements of the Sb2 Se3 -membrane showed cathodic photocurrent generation (up to approximately 10 mA cm-2 at 0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode), which was enough to reduce O2 to an oxygen radical (O2 .- ) for degradation of methyl orange. Consequently, solar-driven integrated water purification was demonstrated for the first time by using a single material with a dual function of superhydrophobicity and photoactivity.

Abstract
Superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity demonstrate mutual advantages in various water-related interfacial applications. However, achieving such two opposite superwetting states on a single one-fabric surface without introducing any continuous external stimulus remains a great challenge. In this work, a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) modification methodology for achieving superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity on a single one-fabric surface is presented. The CVD methodology plays a crucial role in realizing such unusual superwetting properties that can be achieved through a moderate synergetic effect from hydrophobic and hydrophilic components in surface chemistry. Driven only by gravity, the as-prepared fabric with reasonable resistance to repeatable laundering cycles and long-time corrosive liquid submersion can be further applied in high-efficiency on-demand oil-water separation.

Abstract
Superwetting membranes with responsive properties have attracted heightened attention because of their fine-tunable surface wettability. However, their functional diversity is severely limited by the "black-or-white" wettability transition. Herein, we describe a coating strategy to fabricate multifunctional responsive superwetting membranes with SiO2 /octadecylamine patterns. The adjustable patterns in the responsive region are the key factor for functional diversity. Specifically, the coated part of the membrane displayed a superhydrophobicity/superhydrophilicity transition at different pH values, whereas the uncoated part exhibited invariant superhydrophilicity. On the basis of this anisotropy/isotropy transition, the membranes can serve as either responsive permeable membranes or signal-expression membranes, thus enabling the responsive separation and permeation of liquids with satisfactory separation efficiency (>99.90 %) and flux (ca. 60 L m-2 h), as well as real-time liquid signal expression with alterable signals.

Abstract
Understanding the relationship between liquid manipulation and micro-/nanostructured interfaces has gained much attention due to the wide potential applications in many fields, such as chemical and biomedical assays, environmental protection, industry, and even daily life. Much work has been done to construct various materials with interfacial liquid manipulation abilities, leading to a range of interesting applications. Herein, different fabrication methods from the top-down approach to the bottom-up approach and subsequent surface modifications of micro-/nanostructured interfaces are first introduced. Then, interactions between the surface and liquid, including liquid wetting, liquid transportation, and a number of corresponding models, together with the definition of hydrophilic/hydrophobic, oleophilic/olephobic, the definition and mechanism of superwetting, including superhydrophobicity, superhydrophilicity, and superoleophobicity, are presented. The micro-/nanostructured interface, with major applications in self-cleaning, antifogging, anti-icing, anticorrosion, drag-reduction, oil-water separation, water collection, droplet (micro)array, and surface-directed liquid transport, is summarized, and the mechanisms underlying each application are discussed. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives in this area are included.

Abstract
Petroleum processing wastewater (PPW) is a complex mixture of free, soluble, and emulsive hydrocarbons that often contain heavy metals and/or solid particles. As these hazardous constituents can accumulate in human beings and the environment, exposure to the PPW can have harmful effects in various respects. The use of environmental nanotechnologies (E-Nano) is considered an attractive option to resolve the problems associated with PPW. Among different treatment technologies, E-Nano-based sorption (adsorption/absorption) and membrane filtration approaches have been proven to have outstanding efficacy in remediation of PPW pollutants. It is, however, crucial to determine the appropriate technological option (e.g., low-cost operational conditions) for the practical application of such technologies. In this review, the potential of E-Nano-based sorption and membrane technologies in the treatment of various PPW pollutants is discussed based on their performances in comparison to traditional technologies. Their suitability is evaluated further in relation to their merits/disadvantages and economic feasibility with the goal of constructing a perspective map to efficiently implement the E-Nano technologies.

Abstract
The oily wastewater generated in the industrial field is adversely affecting the environment, while the current methods for oil-water separation are complex and costly. Therefore, it is significant to use low cost and environmentally friendly materials to prepare a smart responsive superhydrophobic coating for the effective separation of oil-water mixtures. In this paper, a fluorine-free copolymer with pH responsiveness was fabricated by a solution impregnation method, and it was compounded by silica nanoparticles/polydimethylsiloxane to prepare a superhydrophobic coating on the paper and cotton fabric. The prepared superhydrophobic coating remained in the superhydrophobic state after the alkali treatment, while it would be converted into the hydrophilic state after the acid treatment. Therefore, the pH-responsive superhydrophobic coating will be applied in controlled selective oil-water separation.
