A "Nanopore Lithography" Strategy for Synthesizing Hierarchically Micro/Mesoporous Carbons from ZIF-8/Graphene Oxide Hybrids for Electrochemical Energy Storage

Multiporous ZIF-8 carbon/cellulose composite beads: Highly efficient and scalable adsorbents for water treatment

Metal-organic framework (MOF) particles are one of the most promising adsorbents for removing organic contaminants from wastewater. However, powder-type MOF particles face challenges in terms of utilization and recovery. In this study, a novel bead-type adsorbent was prepared using activated carbon based on the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (AC-ZIF-8) and a regenerated cellulose hydrogel for dye removal. AC-ZIF-8 particles with a large surface area were obtained by carbonization and chemical activation with KOH. The AC-ZIF-8 powders were efficiently immobilized in hydrophilic cellulose hydrogel beads via cellulose dissolution/regeneration. The prepared AC-ZIF-8/cellulose hydrogel (AC-ZIF-8/CH) composite beads exhibit a large specific surface area of 1412.8 m2/g and an excellent maximum adsorption capacity of 565.13 mg/g for Rhodamine B (RhB). Moreover, the AC-ZIF-8/CH beads were effective over a wide range of pH, temperatures and for different types of dyes. These composite beads also offer economic benefits through desorption of dyes for recycling. The AC-ZIF-8/CH beads can be produced in substantial amounts and used as fillers in a fixed-bed column system, which can purify the continuous inflow of dye solutions. These findings suggest that our simple approach for preparing high-performance adsorbent beads will broaden the application of dye adsorbents, oil-water separation, and catalysts.

Highly graphitized porous carbon/reduced graphene oxide for ultrahigh enrichment and ultrasensitive determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

There is an urgent need to develop efficient and reliable coating materials for solid phase microextraction (SPME), in order to quantify and monitor pollutants in environmental waters. Herein, a highly graphitized porous carbon/reduced graphene oxide (PC/rGO) was successfully synthesized by pyrolysis of metal organic framework/graphene oxide precursors, and used as a SPME coating for ultrahigh enrichment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water. The as-prepared PC/rGO exhibited high degree of graphitization, abundant number of micro/mesopores along with exceptional thermal stability, making it an ideal SPME coating material. The PC/rGO fiber offered an ultrahigh enrichment factor for PAHs (up to 126057), which could be attributed to the multiple interactions between the PC/rGO and PAHs, including hydrophobic and π-π interactions, partitioning, and mesopore filling effect. In the analysis of PAHs, the PC/rGO fiber showed a wide linearity (0.007-100 ng mL-1), low limits of detection (0.0005-0.005 ng mL-1), and good repeatability (RSDs <10.1%, n = 5) under optimized conditions. The established method was applicable for ultrasensitive determination of PAHs in different environmental waters and showed satisfactory recoveries. This study provides a novel way for constructing thermally stable SPME coating having efficient extraction performance.

Graphene-Based Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids for Applications in Catalysis, Environmental, and Energy Technologies

Current energy and environmental challenges demand the development and design of multifunctional porous materials with tunable properties for catalysis, water purification, and energy conversion and storage. Because of their amenability to de novo reticular chemistry, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become key materials in this area. However, their usefulness is often limited by low chemical stability, conductivity and inappropriate pore sizes. Conductive two-dimensional (2D) materials with robust structural skeletons and/or functionalized surfaces can form stabilizing interactions with MOF components, enabling the fabrication of MOF nanocomposites with tunable pore characteristics. Graphene and its functional derivatives are the largest class of 2D materials and possess remarkable compositional versatility, structural diversity, and controllable surface chemistry. Here, we critically review current knowledge concerning the growth, structure, and properties of graphene derivatives, MOFs, and their graphene@MOF composites as well as the associated structure-property-performance relationships. Synthetic strategies for preparing graphene@MOF composites and tuning their properties are also comprehensively reviewed together with their applications in gas storage/separation, water purification, catalysis (organo-, electro-, and photocatalysis), and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Current challenges in the development of graphene@MOF hybrids and their practical applications are addressed, revealing areas for future investigation. We hope that this review will inspire further exploration of new graphene@MOF hybrids for energy, electronic, biomedical, and photocatalysis applications as well as studies on previously unreported properties of known hybrids to reveal potential "diamonds in the rough".

Confined growth of ZIF-8 in dendritic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles as bioregulators for enhanced mRNA delivery in vivo

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and its composites have diverse applications. However, ZIF-8-based nanocomposites are mainly used as carriers in biomolecular delivery, with the functions of metal ions and ligands rarely used to modulate the biofunctions. In this work, dendritic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (DMONs) with tetrasulfide bond were used to confine ZIF-8 growth partially inside mesopores as a novel nanocomposite for mRNA delivery. Each component in the resultant DMONs-ZIF-8 contributed to mRNA delivery applications, including high loading benefitting from positively charged ZIF-8 and large mesopores of DMONs, endosomal escape promoted by the imidazole ring of ZIF-8, and long-term glutathione depletion mediated by both zinc ions and tetrasulfide bond. Combined together, DMONs-ZIF-8 demonstrated enhanced mRNA translation and better transfection efficiency than commercial products and toxic polymer-modified DMONs in vitro and in vivo.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived porous carbon materials for supercapacitors: an overview

The present analysis focuses on the synthetic methods used for the application of supercapacitors with various mysterious architectures derived from zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). ZIFs represent an emerging and unique class of metal–organic frameworks with structures similar to conventional aluminosilicate zeolites, consisting of imidazolate linkers and metal ions. Their intrinsic porous properties, robust functionalities, and excellent thermal and chemical stabilities have resulted in a wide range of potential applications for various ZIF materials. In this rapidly expanding area, energetic research activities have emerged in the past few years, ranging from synthesis approaches to attractive applications of ZIFs. In this analysis, the development of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes and recent strategies to produce them, including the synthesis of various heterostructures and nanostructures, are analyzed and summarized. This analysis goes via the ingenuity of modern science when it comes to these nanoarchitecture electrodes. Despite these significant achievements, it is still difficult to accurately monitor the morphologies of materials derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) because the induction force during structural transformations at elevated temperatures is in high demand. It is also desirable to achieve the direct synthesis of highly functionalized nanosized materials derived from zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and the growth of nanoporous structures based on ZIFs encoded in specific substrates for the construction of active materials with a high surface area suitable for electrochemical applications. The latest improvements in this field of supercapacitors with materials formed from ZIFs as electrodes using ZIFs as templates or precursors are discussed in this review. Also, the possibility of usable materials derived from ZIFs for both existing and emerging energy storage technologies is discussed.

Hierarchically structured porous materials: synthesis strategies and applications in energy storage

To address the growing energy demands of sustainable development, it is crucial to develop new materials that can improve the efficiency of energy storage systems. Hierarchically structured porous materials have shown their great potential for energy storage applications owing to their large accessible space, high surface area, low density, excellent accommodation capability with volume and thermal variation, variable chemical compositions and well controlled and interconnected hierarchical porosity at different length scales. Porous hierarchy benefits electron and ion transport, and mass diffusion and exchange. The electrochemical behavior of hierarchically structured porous materials varies with different pore parameters. Understanding their relationship can lead to the defined and accurate design of highly efficient hierarchically structured porous materials to enhance further their energy storage performance. In this review, we take the characteristic parameters of the hierarchical pores as the survey object to summarize the recent progress on hierarchically structured porous materials for energy storage. This is the first of this kind exclusively to survey the performance of hierarchically structured porous materials from different porous characteristics. For those who are not familiar with hierarchically structured porous materials, a series of very significant synthesis strategies of hierarchically structured porous materials are firstly and briefly reviewed. This will be beneficial for those who want to quickly obtain useful reference information about the synthesis strategies of new hierarchically structured porous materials to improve their performance in energy storage. The effect of different organizational, structural and geometric parameters of porous hierarchy on their electrochemical behavior is then deeply discussed. We outline the existing problems and development challenges of hierarchically structured porous materials that need to be addressed in renewable energy applications. We hope that this review can stimulate strong intuition into the design and application of new hierarchically structured porous materials in energy storage and other fields.

Porous Carbon-Based Supercapacitors Directly Derived from Metal-Organic Frameworks

Numerously different porous carbons have been prepared and used in a wide range of practical applications. Porous carbons are also ideal electrode materials for efficient energy storage devices due to their large surface areas, capacious pore spaces, and superior chemical stability compared to other porous materials. Not only the electrical double-layer capacitance (EDLC)-based charge storage but also the pseudocapacitance driven by various dopants in the carbon matrix plays a significant role in enhancing the electrochemical supercapacitive performance of porous carbons. Since the electrochemical capacitive activities are primarily based on EDLC and further enhanced by pseudocapacitance, high-surface carbons are desirable for these applications. The porosity of carbons plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance as well. We have recently witnessed that metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) could be very effective self-sacrificing templates, or precursors, for new high-surface carbons for supercapacitors, or ultracapacitors. Many MOFs can be self-sacrificing precursors for carbonaceous porous materials in a simple yet effective direct carbonization to produce porous carbons. The constituent metal ions can be either completely removed during the carbonization or transformed into valuable redox-active centers for additional faradaic reactions to enhance the electrochemical performance of carbon electrodes. Some heteroatoms of the bridging ligands and solvate molecules can be easily incorporated into carbon matrices to generate heteroatom-doped carbons with pseudocapacitive behavior and good surface wettability. We categorized these MOF-derived porous carbons into three main types: (i) pure and heteroatom-doped carbons, (ii) metallic nanoparticle-containing carbons, and (iii) carbon-based composites with other carbon-based materials or redox-active metal species. Based on these cases summarized in this review, new MOF-derived porous carbons with much enhanced capacitive performance and stability will be envisioned.

Electrocatalysis of cerium metal-organic frameworks for ratiometric electrochemical detection of telomerase activity

A ratiometric electrochemical biosensor was constructed to detect telomerase activity based on electrocatalysis of cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (CeMOFs) and conformation switch of hairpin DNA. First, the CeMOFs were synthesized using Ce as nodes and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid as linker in a green method, and then functionalized with gold nanoparticles. The resulted Au@CeMOF tags demonstrated an excellent electrocatalysis toward hydroquinone oxidation. Meanwhile, a methylene blue (MB) modified hairpin probe was designed with telomerase primer (TP) hybridized "stem" and immobilized on the electrode surface via Au-S chemistry. In the presence of the dNTPs and telomerase, the extended TP can open the hairpin DNA and keep the MB away from the electrode surface, resulting in a decrease of electrochemical signal. In the meantime, the TP-extended part could capture the Au@CeMOF-cDNA tags on the electrode surface via hybridization, leading to the increase electrochemical signal of hydroquinone oxidation catalyzed by Au@CeMOF-cDNA tags. Thus, a ratiometric signal output mode was developed for the electrochemical detection of telomerase activity. This biosensor showed wide dynamic correlation of telomerase activity from 2 × 10² to 2 × 10⁶ cells mL^-1 with the limit of detection of 27 cells mL^-1, and was applied to evaluate telomerase activity in single cell. The ratiometric electrochemical strategy based on the catalysis of MOFs provides a new avenue on signal transduction in telomerase detection.
