Seeded Growth Synthesis of Gold Nanotriangles: Size Control, SAXS Analysis, and SERS Performance

Concave Gold Nanocubes Exhibit Growth-Etching Behavior: Unexpected Morphological Transformations

Chemical equilibrium stands as a fundamental principle governing the dynamics of chemical systems. However, it may become intricate when it refers to nanomaterials because of their unique properties. Here, we invesitigated concave gold nanocubes (CGNs) subjected to an akaline Au3+/H2O2 solution, which exhibit both etching and growth in a monotonic solution. When CGNs were subjected to an increasingly alkaline Au3+/H2O2 solution, their dimensions increased from 107 to 199 nm and then decreased to 125 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated that their morphology undergoes intricate alternations from concave to mutibranch and finally to concave again. Real-time ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and time-dependent TEM also demonstrated reduction first and then oxidation in one solution. Among the nanomaterials, the obtained carpenterworm-like gold nanoparticles revealed the best catalytic performance in p-nitrophenol reduction by NaBH4, with a chemical rate that continues to increase until the reaction reaches completion. Growth leading to atomic dislocation, distortion, and exposure on nanoparticles and the redox of H2O2 plausibly account for the further etching due to the Ostwald ripening effect. Our study may spur more interest in the tuning of the properties, engineering, investigation, and design of new kinds of nanomaterials.

Gold Nanoparticles Confined in Mesoporous Bioactive Glass for Periodontitis Therapy

Periodontitis is a chronic disease caused by bacterial infection and is characterized with alveolar bone resorption. Bone regeneration in periodontitis remains a critical challenge because bacterial infection induced an unfavorable microenvironment for osteogenesis. Therefore, it is necessary to design proper therapeutic platforms to control bacterial infection and promote bone regeneration. Herein, mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) with different pore sizes (3.0, 4.3, and 12.3 nm) was used as an in situ reactor to confine the growth of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), forming MBG@Au hybrids which combine the osteoconductivity of MBG and antibacterial properties of Au NPs. Upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the MBG@Au NPs showed efficient antibacterial properties both in vitro and in vivo. Besides, the osteogenesis properties of MBG@Au also improved under NIR irradiation. Furthermore, the in vivo results demonstrated that MBG@Au can effectively promote alveolar bone regeneration and realize the healing of serious periodontitis.

Electrochemical synthesis of 2D-silver nanodendrites functionalized with cyclodextrin for SERS-based detection of herbicide MCPA

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical technique that has found application in the trace detection of a wide range of contaminants. In this paper, we report on the fabrication of 2D silver nanodendrites, on silicon chips, synthesized by electrochemical reduction of AgNO3at microelectrodes. The formation of nanodendrites is tentatively explained in terms of electromigration and diffusion of silver ions. Electrochemical characterization suggests that the nanodendrites do not stay electrically connected to the microelectrode. The substrates show SERS activity with an enhancement factor on the order of 106. Density functional theory simulations were carried out to investigate the suitability of the fabricated substrate for pesticide monitoring. These substrates can be functionalized with cyclodextrin macro molecules to help with the detection of molecules with low affinity with silver surfaces. A proof of concept is demonstrated with the detection of the herbicide 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA).

Advancing Mycotoxin Detection in Food and Feed: Novel Insights from Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS)

The implementation of low-cost and rapid technologies for the on-site detection of mycotoxin-contaminated crops is a promising solution to address the growing concerns of the agri-food industry. Recently, there have been significant developments in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for the direct detection of mycotoxins in food and feed. This review provides an overview of the most recent advancements in the utilization of SERS through the successful fabrication of novel nanostructured materials. Various bottom-up and top-down approaches have demonstrated their potential in improving sensitivity, while many applications exploit the immobilization of recognition elements and molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) to enhance specificity and reproducibility in complex matrices. Therefore, the design and fabrication of nanomaterials is of utmost importance and are presented herein. This paper uncovers that limited studies establish detection limits or conduct validation using naturally contaminated samples. One decade on, SERS is still lacking significant progress and there is a disconnect between the technology, the European regulatory limits, and the intended end-user. Ongoing challenges and potential solutions are discussed including nanofabrication, molecular binders, and data analytics. Recommendations to assay design, portability, and substrate stability are made to help improve the potential and feasibility of SERS for future on-site agri-food applications.

Planting gold nanoflower for harvesting reproducible SERS substrate

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an ultrasensitive analytical method which has been applied in many fields, and the reproducibility of the substrate is important for reliable SERS analysis. In present work, an innovative method inspired by the flower planting process is put forward to acquire gold nanoflower (AuNF) SERS substrate. Three steps (digging holes, sowing the gold nanoseeds and seeds grow into gold nanoflowers) are included in the substrate fabrication process, and the influence of preparing conditions (like reacting time and Na3Au(SO3)2 concentration) on the substrate morphology and SERS performance are investigated. The acquired AuNF substrate not only exhibits good SERS performance but also possesses excellent reproducibility while being used to detect the rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecular. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of Raman signals among substrates acquired in distinct batches (substrate-to-substrate) is as low as 6.67 %. Since the AuNF substrate is prepared by the wet chemistry route based on seed-mediated growth and there are no expensive reagents or complicated process used, the new process to obtain AuNF substrate is cost-effective and easy to scale up.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering from Au nanorods, nanotriangles, and nanostars with tuned plasmon resonances

Electromagnetic theory predicts that the optimal value of the localized plasmon resonance (LPR) wavelength for the maximal SERS enhancement factor (EF) is half the sum of the laser and Raman wavelengths. For small Raman shifts, the theoretical EF scales as the fourth power of the local field. However, experimental data often disagree with these theoretical conclusions, leaving the question of choosing the optimal plasmon resonance for the maximal SERS signal unresolved. Here, we present experimental data for gold nanorods (AuNRs), gold nanotriangles (AuNTs), and gold nanostars (AuNSTs) simulating 1D, 2D, and 3D plasmonic nanostructures, respectively. The LPR wavelengths were tuned by chemical etching within 580-1020 nm at a constant concentration of the particles. The particles were functionalized with Cy7.5 and NBT, and the dependence of the intensity at 940 cm-1 (Cy7.5) and 1343 cm-1 (NBT) on the LPR wavelength was examined for laser wavelengths of 633 nm and 785 nm. The electromagnetic SERS EFs were calculated by averaging the product of the local field intensities at the laser and Raman wavelengths over the particle surface and their random orientations. The calculated SERS plasmonic profiles were redshifted compared to the laser wavelength. For 785 nm excitation, the calculated EFs were five to seven times higher than those for 633 nm excitation. With AuNR@Cy7.5 and AuNT@ Cy7.5, the experimental SERS was 35-fold stronger than it was with NBT-functionalized particles, but with AuNST@Cy7.5 and AuNST@NBT, the SERS responses were similar. With all nanoparticles tested, the SERS plasmonic profiles after 785 nm excitation were slightly blue-shifted, as compared with the laser wavelength, possibly owing to the inner filter effect. After 633 nm excitation, the SERS profiles were red-shifted, in agreement with EM theory. In all cases, the plasmonic EF profiles were much broadened compared to the calculated ones and did not follow the four-power law.

Surface Geometry of Cargo-less Gold Nanoparticles Is a Driving Force for Selective Targeting of Activated Neutrophils to Reduce Thrombosis in Antiphospholipid Syndrome

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by recurrent arterial, venous, and microvascular thrombosis where activated neutrophils play a determinant role. However, neutrophils are challenging to target given their short lifespan in circulation and spontaneous activation. Screening of a small library of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) led to the discovery of a formulation capable of targeting activated neutrophil attachment and has demonstrated that star-shaped, anti-PSGL-1-antibody-coated AuNPs (aPSGL-1-AuNPs) were more efficacious compared with other shapes of AuNPs. Our findings further revealed an exciting and safe targeting mode toward activated neutrophils in the APS mouse model induced by human-patient-derived antiphospholipid IgGs. Our studies demonstrate that targeting is dependent on the specific topographical features of the highly segregated PSGL-1 on the activated neutrophil surface for which a high affinity shape-driven nanomedicine can be designed and implemented. As such, star-shaped aPSGL-1-AuNPs serve as a promising nanoimmunotherapy for immunothrombosis associated with neutrophil adhesion in APS.

Depletion force optimization for high-purity gold nanotriangles prepared using different growth methods

A homogeneous structural distribution in metal nanoparticle is commonly required for their application, and despite high-yield growth techniques, unavoidable structural heterogeneity remains a concern in metal nanoparticle synthesis. Gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) were synthesized using seed-mediated and seedless growth methods. Recent advancements in high-yield synthesis processes have enabled easy handling of AuNTs, which exhibit unique localized surface plasmon resonance characteristics due to their anisotropic triangular form. The flocculation and subsequent precipitation technique was used to purify AuNTs of different sizes synthesized using seed-mediated and seedless growth methods. The optimal conditions for obtaining high-purity AuNTs were explored by introducing a high concentration of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride. Additionally, the depletion force necessary for achieving high-purity AuNTs was calculated to reveal variations in the required depletion forces for AuNTs synthesized using different growth techniques. The alternations in the size distribution of AuNTs during the flocculation step were tracked using dynamic light scattering, and the surface charge of AuNTs synthesized through different growth methods was evaluated by ζ-potential. The high purity of the AuNTs produced using the seedless growth method required a larger depletion force than the seed-mediated grown AuNTs. The difference in the required depletion forces results from the difference in the electrostatic forces caused by the different growth methods.

Smart Nanozymes for Cancer Therapy: The Next Frontier in Oncology

Nanomaterials that mimic the catalytic activity of natural enzymes in the complex biological environment of the human body are called nanozymes. Recently, nanozyme systems have been reported with diagnostic, imaging, and/or therapeutic capabilities. Smart nanozymes strategically exploit the tumor microenvironment (TME) by the in situ generation of reactive species or by the modulation of the TME itself to result in effective cancer therapy. This topical review focuses on such smart nanozymes for cancer diagnosis, and therapy modalities with enhanced therapeutic effects. The dominant factors that guide the rational design and synthesis of nanozymes for cancer therapy include an understanding of the dynamic TME, structure-activity relationships, surface chemistry for imparting selectivity, and site-specific therapy, and stimulus-responsive modulation of nanozyme activity. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the subject including the diverse catalytic mechanisms of different types of nanozyme systems, an overview of the TME, cancer diagnosis, and synergistic cancer therapies. The strategic application of nanozymes in cancer treatment can well be a game changer in future oncology. Moreover, recent developments may pave the way for the deployment of nanozyme therapy into other complex healthcare challenges, such as genetic diseases, immune disorders, and ageing.

Morphology-Controlled Growth of Crystalline Ag-Pt-Alloyed Shells onto Au Nanotriangles and Their Plasmonic Properties

The surface plasmon resonance of noble-metal nanoparticles depends on nanoscale size, morphology, and composition, and provides great opportunities for applications in biomedicine, optoelectronics, (photo)catalysis, photovoltaics, and sensing. Here, we present the results of synthesizing ternary metallic or trimetallic nanoparticles, Au nanotriangles (Au NTs) with crystalline Ag-Pt alloyed shells, the morphology of which can be adjusted from a yolk-shell to a core-shell structure by changing the concentration of AgNO3 or the concentration of Au NT seeds, while the shell thickness can be precisely controlled by adjusting the concentration of K2PtCl4. By monitoring the growth process with UV-vis spectra and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), the shells on the Au NT-Ag-Pt yolk-shell nanoparticles were found to grow via a galvanic replacement synergistic route. The plasmonic properties of the as-synthesized nanoparticles were investigated by optical absorbance measurements.

Microfluidic-Generated Seeds for Gold Nanotriangle Synthesis in Three or Two Steps

Nanoparticle synthesis has drawn great attention in the last decades. The study of crystal growth mechanisms and optimization of the existing methods lead to the increasing accessibility of nanomaterials, such as gold nanotriangles which have great potential in the fields of plasmonics and catalysis. To form such structures, a careful balance of reaction parameters has to be maintained. Herein, a novel synthesis of gold nanotriangles from seeds derived with a micromixer, which provides a highly efficient mixing and simple parameter control is reported. The impact of the implemented reactor on the primary seed characteristics is investigated. The following growth steps are studied to reveal the phenomena affecting the shape yield. The use of microfluidic seeds led to the formation of well-defined triangles with a narrower size distribution compared to the entirely conventional batch synthesis. A shortened two-step procedure for the formation of triangles directly from primary seeds, granting an express but robust synthesis is further described. Moreover, the need for a thorough study of seed crystallinity depending on the synthesis conditions, which - together with additional parameter optimization - will bring a new perspective to the use of micromixers which are promising for scaling up nanomaterial production is highlighted.

Subclass Effects on Self-Association and Viscosity of Monoclonal Antibodies at High Concentrations

The effects of a subclass of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) on protein-protein interactions, formation of reversible oligomers (clusters), and viscosity (η) are not well understood at high concentrations. Herein, we quantify a short-range anisotropic attraction between the complementarity-determining region (CDR) and CH3 domains (K_CDR-CH3) for vedolizumab IgG1, IgG2, or IgG4 subclasses by fitting small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) structure factor S_eff(q) data with an extensive library of 12-bead coarse-grained (CG) molecular dynamics simulations. The K_CDR-CH3 bead attraction strength was isolated from the strength of long-range electrostatic repulsion for the full mAb, which was determined from the theoretical net charge and a scaling parameter ψ to account for solvent accessibility and ion pairing. At low ionic strength (IS), the strongest short-range attraction (K_CDR-CH3) and consequently the largest clusters and highest η were observed with IgG1, the subclass with the most positively charged CH3 domain. Furthermore, the trend in K_CDR-CH3 with the subclass followed the electrostatic interaction energy between the CDR and CH3 regions calculated with the BioLuminate software using the 3D mAb structure and molecular interaction potentials. Whereas the equilibrium cluster size distributions and fractal dimensions were determined from fits of SAXS with the MD simulations, the degree of cluster rigidity under flow was estimated from the experimental η with a phenomenological model. For the systems with the largest clusters, especially IgG1, the inefficient packing of mAbs in the clusters played the largest role in increasing η, whereas for other systems, the relative contribution from stress produced by the clusters was more significant. The ability to relate η to short-range attraction from SAXS measurements at high concentrations and to theoretical characterization of electrostatic patches on the 3D surface is not only of fundamental interest but also of practical value for mAb discovery, processing, formulation, and subcutaneous delivery.

Composite nanoparticle-metal-organic frameworks for SERS sensing

In recent years, metal-organic frameworks, in general, and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks, in special, had become popular due to their large surface area, pore homogeneity, and easy preparation and integration with plasmonic nanoparticles to produce optical sensors. Herein, we summarize the late advances in the use of these hybrid composites in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering and their future perspectives.

Development of PEGylated Cu nanoclusters: A nontoxic, multifunctional colloidal system for bioimaging and peroxide sensing

This study introduces the development of blue-emitting colloidal Cu NCs through a novel and easy PEGylation method using different functional groups, including -SH and -COOH. The surface functionalization controls the size, cellular toxicity, and emission properties of Cu NCs. The combination of PEG, thiol, and carboxylic groups protects the particle surface from aggregation and oxidation. Among the samples, CAGP (Surface modified Cu NCs with -SH-COOH-PEG combination) emerges as an amazing candidate with the lowest toxicity and enhanced blue emission properties. The bright blue fluorescence emission from Hela cells after treatment with CAGP demonstrated this property. It also has excellent peroxide sensing potential, with a detection limit of 1.4 μM. Because of their excellent bioimaging and peroxide sensing properties, these Cu NCs could be a promising candidate for cellular oxidative stress sensing applications with high clinical relevance.

Generalization of Self-Assembly Toward Differently Shaped Colloidal Nanoparticles for Plasmonic Superlattices

Periodic superlattices of noble metal nanoparticles  have demonstrated superior plasmonic properties compared to randomly distributed plasmonic arrangements due to near-field coupling and constructive far-field interference. Here, a chemically driven, templated self-assembly process of colloidal gold nanoparticles is investigated and optimized, and the technology is extended toward a generalized assembly process for variously shaped particles, such as spheres, rods, and triangles. The process yields periodic superlattices of homogenous  nanoparticle clusters on a centimeter scale. Electromagnetically simulated absorption spectra and corresponding experimental extinction measurements demonstrate excellent agreement in the far-field for all particle types and different lattice periods. The electromagnetic simulations reveal the specific nano-cluster near-field behavior, predicting the experimental findings provided by surface-enhanced Raman scattering measurements. It turns out that periodic arrays of spherical nanoparticles produce higher surface-enhanced Raman scattering enhancement factors than particles with less symmetry as a result of very well-defined strong hotspots.

Plate-Like Colloidal Metal Nanoparticles

The pseudo-two-dimensional (2D) morphology of plate-like metal nanoparticles makes them one of the most anisotropic, mechanistically understood, and tunable structures available. Although well-known for their superior plasmonic properties, recent progress in the 2D growth of various other materials has led to an increasingly diverse family of plate-like metal nanoparticles, giving rise to numerous appealing properties and applications. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the solution-phase growth of colloidal plate-like metal nanoparticles, including plasmonic and other metals, with an emphasis on mechanistic insights for different synthetic strategies, the crystallographic habits of different metals, and the use of nanoplates as scaffolds for the synthesis of other derivative structures. We additionally highlight representative self-assembly techniques and provide a brief overview on the attractive properties and unique versatility benefiting from the 2D morphology. Finally, we share our opinions on the existing challenges and future perspectives for plate-like metal nanomaterials.

Gold Triangular Nanoprisms: Anisotropic Plasmonic Materials with Unique Structures and Properties

As a novel type of anisotropic inorganic nanomaterials, gold triangular nanoprisms (AuTNPs) have been widely studied for their well-defined structures and excellent plasmonic properties. This review starts with synthetic methodology, combing through the early thermal solution method to the mature seed-mediated method and seedless method. The possible mechanisms proposed by predecessors and the problems needed to be solved are also arranged. Along with this, the important morphological evolution process of AuTNPs during synthesis and post-synthesis stages are revealed, which is of great significance for further understanding the structure of AuTNPs and developing new synthesis strategies. Finally, the applications of AuTNPs, especially associated with plasmonic properties, are listed and summarized where surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), catalysis, phototherapy and biosensor are included, so that researchers can quickly comprehend the current situation, and provide a basis for further development and exploration of AuTNPs.

Plasmon Coupling and Efficient Charge Transfer in Rough-Surfaced Au Nanotriangles/MXene Hybrids as an Ultrasensitive Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Platform

The rational design of Raman substrate materials with prominent electromagnetic enhancement and charge transfer is quite important for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Herein, an efficient SERS substrate based on two-dimensional ultrathin Ti₃C₂T _x MXene and rough-surfaced Au nanotriangles (NTs) was successfully prepared for efficient detection of organic molecules due to the synthetic effect of an optimized electromagnetic field and charge transfer. Uniform Au NTs with tunable surface roughness were controllably prepared by selectively depositing of Au on the smooth Au NTs. Due to the large surface area, tunable plasmon resonance, and abundant hotspots on the planar surface, the modified Au NTs showed much better SERS performance than initial Au NTs. By combination of the rough-surfaced Au NTs with MXene, the Ti₃C₂T _x /Au NT hybrids exhibited much better SERS performance than initial Au NTs and Au NTs with a rough surface. The detection limit is down to 10^-12 M, and the analytical enhancement factors reach 3.6 × 10⁹ (at 1174 cm^-1) on detecting crystal violet excited at 785 nm. This is because the strong plasmon coupling between the in-plane resonance of Au NTs and transversal plasmon resonance of Ti₃C₂T _x MXene around 785 nm can generate an intense interfacial electromagnetic field for amplifying SERS signals. Additionally, the efficient charge transfer between Au NTs, MXene, and molecules also plays an important role in enhancing the SERS performance. This work presents a new insight to develop high-performance SERS substrates based on plasmon.

A Review on Gold Nanotriangles: Synthesis, Self-Assembly and Their Applications

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with interesting optical properties have attracted much attention in recent years. The synthesis and plasmonic properties of AuNPs with a controllable size and shape have been extensively investigated. Among these AuNPs, gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) exhibited unique optical and plasmonic properties due to their special triangular anisotropy. Indeed, AuNTs showed promising applications in optoelectronics, optical sensing, imaging and other fields. However, only few reviews about these applications have been reported. Herein, we comprehensively reviewed the synthesis and self-assembly of AuNTs and their applications in recent years. The preparation protocols of AuNTs are mainly categorized into chemical synthesis, biosynthesis and physical-stimulus-induced synthesis. The comparison between the advantages and disadvantages of various synthetic strategies are discussed. Furthermore, the specific surface modification of AuNTs and their self-assembly into different dimensional nano- or microstructures by various interparticle interactions are introduced. Based on the unique physical properties of AuNTs and their assemblies, the applications towards chemical biology and sensing were developed. Finally, the future development of AuNTs is prospected.

Gold Nanomaterials and their Composites as Electrochemical Sensing Platforms for Nitrite Detection

Nitrite is one of the abundant toxic components existing in the environment and is likely to have a great potential to affect human health badly. For that reason, it has become crucial to build a reliable nitrite detection method. In recent years, several nitrite monitoring systems have been proposed. Compared with traditional analytical strategies, the electrochemical approach has a bunch of advantages, including low cost, rapid response, easy operation, simplicity, etc. In this case, noble metal nanomaterials, especially Au-based nanomaterials, have attracted attention in electrode modification because of higher catalytic activity, facile mass transfer, and broad active area for determining nitrite. This review is based on the state-of-the-art, which includes a variety of nanomaterials that have been coupled with AuNPs for the creation of nanocomposites, and the construction as well as development of electrochemical sensors for nitrite detection over the last few years (2016-2022). A background study on synthesizing different morphological AuNPs and nanocomposites has also been introduced. The fabrication methods and sensing capabilities of modified electrodes are given special consideration.

Flexible surface-enhanced Raman scatting substrates: recent advances in their principles, design strategies, diversified material selections and applications

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is widely used as a powerful analytical technology in cutting-edge areas such as food safety, biology, chemistry, and medical diagnosis, providing ultra-fast, ultra-sensitive, nondestructive characterization and achieving ultra-high detection sensitivity even down to the single-molecule level. Development of Raman spectroscopy is strongly dependent on high-performance SERS substrates, which have long evolved from the early days of rough metal electrodes to periodic nanopatterned arrays building on solid supporting substrates. For rigid SERS substrates, however, their applications are restricted by sophisticated pretreatments for detecting solid samples with non-planar surfaces. It is therefore essential to reassert the principles in constructing flexible SERS substrates. Herein, we comprehensively review the state-of-the-art in understanding, preparing and using flexible SERS. The basic mechanisms behind the flexible SERS are briefly outlined, typical design strategies are highlighted and diversified selection of materials in preparing flexible SERS substrates are reviewed. Then the recent achievements of various interdisciplinary applications based on flexible SERS substrates are summarized. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for future evolution of flexible SERS and their applications are demonstrated. We propose new research directions focused on stimulating the real potential of SERS as an advanced analytical technique for commercialization.

Influencing factors and characterization methods of nanoparticles regulating amyloid aggregation

Human disorders associated with amyloid aggregation, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, afflict the lives of millions worldwide. When peptides and proteins in the body are converted to amyloids, which have a tendency to aggregate, the toxic oligomers produced during the aggregation process can trigger a range of diseases. Nanoparticles (NPs) have been found to possess surface effects that can modulate the amyloid aggregation process and they have potential application value in the treatment of diseases related to amyloid aggregation and fibrillary tangles. In this review, we discuss recent progress relating to studies of nanoparticles that regulate amyloid aggregation. The review focuses on the factors influencing this regulation, which are important as guidelines for the future design of NPs for the treatment of amyloid aggregation. We describe the characterization methods that have been utilized so far in such studies. This review provides research information and characterization methods for the rational design of NPs, which should result in therapeutic strategies for amyloid diseases.

Development of Gold Nanoparticle-Based SERS Substrates on TiO2-Coating to Reduce the Coffee Ring Effect

Hydrophilic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates were prepared by a combination of TiO₂-coatings of aluminium plates through a direct titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) coating and drop coated by synthesised gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Differences between the wettability of the untreated substrates, the slowly dried Ti(OH)₄ substrates and calcinated as well as plasma treated TiO₂ substrates were analysed by water contact angle (WCA) measurements. The hydrophilic behaviour of the developed substrates helped to improve the distribution of the AuNPs, which reflects in overall higher lateral SERS enhancement. Surface enhancement of the substrates was tested with target molecule rhodamine 6G (R6G) and a fibre-coupled 638 nm Raman spectrometer. Additionally, the morphology of the substrates was characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman microscopy. The studies showed a reduced influence of the coffee ring effect on the particle distribution, resulting in a more broadly distributed edge region, which increased the spatial reproducibility of the measured SERS signal in the surface-enhanced Raman mapping measurements on mm scale.

Recent Advances in Metallic Nanoparticle Assemblies for Surface-Enhanced Spectroscopy

Robust and versatile strategies for the development of functional nanostructured materials often focus on assemblies of metallic nanoparticles. Research interest in such assemblies arises due to their potential applications in the fields of photonics and sensing. Metallic nanoparticles have received considerable recent attention due to their connection to the widely studied phenomenon of localized surface plasmon resonance. For instance, plasmonic hot spots can be observed within their assemblies. A useful form of spectroscopy is based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). This phenomenon is a commonly used in sensing techniques, and it works using the principle that scattered inelastic light can be greatly enhanced at a surface. However, further research is required to enable improvements to the SERS techniques. For example, one question that remains open is how to design uniform, highly reproducible, and efficiently enhancing substrates of metallic nanoparticles with high structural precision. In this review, a general overview on nanoparticle functionalization and the impact on nanoparticle assembly is provided, alongside an examination of their applications in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Dual-Mode Circularly Polarized Light Emission and Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence Realized by the Luminophore-Chiral Cellulose Nanocrystal Interfaces

Circularly polarized (CP) light has attracted wide attention for its great potential in broad applications. However, it remains a challenge to generate left-handed and right-handed circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) light from cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based materials only with an intrinsic left-handed chiral structure, owing to the pattern of CP light emission primarily based on the chirality of materials. Herein, a separation structure of luminophore layers and chiral CNCs was provided to achieve dual-mode CP light emission by building a luminophore-chiral CNC interface. By directly exciting the back and front of two-layer films, LCP and RCP light could be easily emitted without any assisting means and specific setting angles. In addition, owing to the formation of the luminophore-chiral CNC interface, metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) was achieved to offset the brightness loss caused by circular polarization. By incorporating gold triangular nanoprisms in CNC chiral layers, the fluorescence enhancement of the ensemble was as high as 6.5-fold. The decisive role of the luminophore-chiral CNC interface in enhancing luminescence and dual-mode CP light emission was carefully investigated by contrasting the systems with and without luminophore-chiral CNC interfaces in this study. We believe that this dual-mode CP light emission film with MEF enables a promising approach to extending the application of CP light materials.

Clusters-based silver nanorings: An active substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Plasmonic nanostructures, particularly irregular surfaces of ring-like silver (Ag) nanostructures are promising candidates in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. In this work, clusters-based Ag nanorings have been fabricated and characterized as SERS-active substrates. The rim of the as-fabricated Ag nanorings was found neither discontinuous nor linear aggregation of nanoparticles. High-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed that the individual constituent clusters were different from each other, particularly in terms of size and shape in addition to the cases how such clusters were emerged as the edge of the nanoring. Considering the dimensions of the clusters and the arrangement of such clusters as nanorings, it was speculated that the local electromagnetic (EM) near-field distributions would excel and thus enhanced SERS signals would be achieved. Indeed, the inherent features of the nanorings facilitated to achieve SERS enhancement factors as high as 2.1 × 10⁴. SERS-activity of as-fabricated Ag nanorings was confirmed using Rhodamine 6G (R6G) as Raman-active dyes and the enhancement was compared to those obtained from R6G adsorbed on Ag-ZnO/Glass and ZnO/Glass. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to explore the impact of localized EM near-field within the segments of nanorings through SERS spectroscopy. A model was designed resembling the nanorings under this investigation to simulate EM near-field distributions by finite difference time domain (FDTD) analysis. The dimensions of the model geometry were chosen according to the observations achieved by FESEM. To simplify the simulations, nanoobjects were considered spherical and organized in a periodic fashion, although the constituent clusters of Ag nanorings were found irregular in shape and arrangement. Since EM near-field distribution highly depends on interparticle gaps, three scenarios were implemented, such as, small gap in between two adjacent nanoobjects and adjacent nanoobjects in touch and overlapped. Each configuration was simulated and EM near-field distribution was extracted for s-, p- and 45⁰ of incident polarizations followed by a plausible correlation to SERS enhancements. Such correlated investigations as well as clusters-based Ag nanorings not only inspire the ones to look for cost-effective SERS-active substrate, but also understand the underlying EM mechanism in SERS enhancements.

Rapid field trace detection of pesticide residue in food based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is an alternative detection tool for monitoring food security. However, there is still a lack of a conclusion of SERS detection with respect to pesticides and real sample analysis, and the summary of intelligent algorithms in SERS is also a blank. In this review, a comprehensive report of pesticides detection using SERS technology is given. The SERS detection characteristics of different types of pesticides and the influence of substrate on inspection are discussed and compared by the typical ways of classification. The key points, including the progress in real sample analysis and Raman data processing methods with intelligent algorithm, are highlighted. Lastly, major challenges and future research trends of SERS analysis of pesticide residue are also addressed. SERS has been proven to be a powerful technique for rapid test of residue pesticides in complex food matrices, but there still is a tremendous development space for future research.

Femtosecond laser patterned superhydrophobic/hydrophobic SERS sensors for rapid positioning ultratrace detection

Ultratrace molecular detections are vital for precancer diagnosis, forensic analysis, and food safety. Superhydrophobic (SH) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors are regarded as an ideal approach to improve detection performance by concentrating analyte molecules within a small volume. However, due to the low adhesion of SH surfaces, the analyte droplet is prone to rolling, making it hard to deposit molecules on a predetermined position. Furthermore, the sediment with a very small area on the SH-SERS surface is difficult to be captured even with a Raman microscope. In this study, femtosecond laser fabricated hybrid SH/hydrophobic (SH/HB) surfaces are successfully applied to realize a rapid and highly sensitive SERS detection. By modulating dual surface structures and wetting behaviors, the analyte molecules can be enriched at the edge of HB pattern. This improves the convenience and speed of Raman test. On a hybrid SH/HB SERS substrate with a circular HB pattern at 300-µm-diameter, a femtomolar level (10^-14 M) of rhodamine 6G can be detected by using analyte volumes of just 5 µL. The SERS enhancement factor can reach 5.7×10⁸ and a good uniformity with a relative standard deviation of 6.98% is achieved. Our results indicate that the laser fabrication of hybrid SERS sensor offers an efficient and cost-effective approach for ultratrace molecular detection.

Electrospun polymeric nanofiber decorated with sea urchin-like gold nanoparticles as an efficient and stable SERS platform

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based nanoprobes have been used as well-established analytical tools enabling single-molecule detection. In this work, we report a facile method to decorate sea urchin-like gold nanoparticles (SUGNPs) on the surface of PMMA/P4VP nanofibers. Firstly, PMMA/P4VP nanofibers within the submicrometer size range were prepared by applying the electrospinning technique. Then, the incorporation of SUGNPs on the surface of PMMA/P4VP nanofiber was achieved by immersing PMMA/P4VP nanofiber into freshly prepared SUGNP aqueous solution through the specific Au-N interactions. The as-fabricated SUGNP-coated PMMA/P4VP nanofibers exhibited good sensitivity and reproducibility in SERS measurements with the relative standard deviation down to 6.6%, by employing 4-mercaptobenzoic acid as a probe molecule with 30 min of soaking time. Hence, we envisage that the SUGNP-coated PMMA/P4VP nanofibers can act as efficient and stable SERS substrates for potential applications in molecular detection as well as chemical and biological analysis.

Understanding nanoparticle endocytosis to improve targeting strategies in nanomedicine

Nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted considerable attention in various fields, such as cosmetics, the food industry, material design, and nanomedicine. In particular, the fast-moving field of nanomedicine takes advantage of features of NPs for the detection and treatment of different types of cancer, fibrosis, inflammation, arthritis as well as neurodegenerative and gastrointestinal diseases. To this end, a detailed understanding of the NP uptake mechanisms by cells and intracellular localization is essential for safe and efficient therapeutic applications. In the first part of this review, we describe the several endocytic pathways involved in the internalization of NPs and we discuss the impact of the physicochemical properties of NPs on this process. In addition, the potential challenges of using various inhibitors, endocytic markers and genetic approaches to study endocytosis are addressed along with the principal (semi) quantification methods of NP uptake. The second part focuses on synthetic and bio-inspired substances, which can stimulate or decrease the cellular uptake of NPs. This approach could be interesting in nanomedicine where a high accumulation of drugs in the target cells is desirable and clearance by immune cells is to be avoided. This review contributes to an improved understanding of NP endocytic pathways and reveals potential substances, which can be used in nanomedicine to improve NP delivery.

Spectroscopically clean Au nanoparticles for catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide

Au nanoparticles synthesized from colloidal techniques have the capability in many applications such as catalysis and sensing. Au nanoparticles function as both catalyst and highly sensitive SERS probe can be employed for sustainable and green catalytic process. However, capping ligands that are necessary to stabilize nanoparticles during synthesis are negative for catalytic activity. In this work, a simple effective mild thermal treatment to remove capping ligands meanwhile preserving the high SERS sensitivity of Au nanoparticles is reported. We show that under the optimal treatment conditions (250 °C for 2 h), 50 nm Au nanoparticles surfaces are free from any capping molecules. The catalytic activity of treated Au nanoparticles is studied through H₂O₂ decomposition, which proves that the treatment is favorable for catalytic performance improvement. A reaction intermediate during H₂O₂ decomposition is observed and identified.

Time Optimization of Seed-Mediated Gold Nanotriangle Synthesis Based on Kinetic Studies

The synthesis of shape-anisotropic plasmonic nanoparticles such as gold nanotriangles is of increasing interest. These particles have a high potential for applications due to their notable optical properties. A key challenge of the synthesis is usually the low reproducibility. Even the optimized seed-based methods often lack in the synthesis yield or are labor- and time-consuming. In this work, a seed-mediated synthesis with high reproducibility is replicated in order to determine the necessary reaction time for each step. Online monitoring of the reaction mixtures by UV–VIS spectroscopy is used as a powerful tool to track the evolution of the synthesis. The kinetics of the individual stages is elucidated by real-time investigations. As a consequence, the complete synthesis could be optimized and can now be realized in a single day instead of three without any loss in the resulting sample quality.

Single plasmonic nanostructures for biomedical diagnosis

The field of single nanoparticle plasmonics has grown enormously. There is no doubt that a wide diversity of the nanoplasmonic techniques and nanostructures represents a tremendous opportunity for fundamental biomedical studies as well as sensing and imaging applications. Single nanoparticle plasmonic biosensors are efficient in label-free single-molecule detection, as well as in monitoring real-time binding events of even several biomolecules. In the present review, we have discussed the prominent advantages and advances in single particle characterization and synthesis as well as new insight into and information on biomedical diagnosis uniquely obtained using single particle approaches. The approaches include the fundamental studies of nanoplasmonic behavior, two typical methods based on refractive index change and characteristic light intensity change, exciting innovations of synthetic strategies for new plasmonic nanostructures, and practical applications using single particle sensing, imaging, and tracking. The basic sphere and rod nanostructures are the focus of extensive investigations in biomedicine, while they can be programmed into algorithmic assemblies for novel plasmonic diagnosis. Design of single nanoparticles for the detection of single biomolecules will have far-reaching consequences in biomedical diagnosis.

Biofabrication of Gold Nanotriangles Using Liposomes as a Dual Functional Reductant and Stabilizer

Negatively charged liposomes accomplished both functions as a reducing and stabilizing agent in the synthesis of gold nanotriangles (GNTs). Liposomes are based on a mixture of phospholipids phosphatidylcholine/phosphoglycerol, and they were used as a template phase to perform the GNTs. The method was evaluated under different conditions such as temperature, reaction time, phosphoglycerol chain length, and precursor concentration. Isotropic and anisotropic gold nanoparticles are formed simultaneously during the synthesis. Therefore, by combining centrifugation and depletion flocculation strategies, the sample was concentrated in terms of GNTs from 15% crude to 80% by using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). As a result, a green colored dispersion was obtained containing highly purified, well-defined, negatively charged GNTs, where the edge length of most particles is centered in the range of 60-80 nm with an average thickness of 7.8 ± 0.1 nm. By this purification process, it was possible to highly increase the yield in terms of GNTs. Other surfactants [cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), Tween 20, and dodecyldimethylammonium bromide] were evaluated during the purification stage, and both CTAB and CTAC show similar results to those obtained by using SDS. These GNTs are potential candidates for future applications in molecular imaging, photothermal therapy, drug delivery, biosensing, and photodynamic therapy.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are among the most common and powerful label-free refractive index-based biosensing techniques available nowadays. Focusing on LSPR sensors, their performance is highly dependent on the size, shape, and nature of the nanomaterial employed. Indeed, the tailoring of those parameters allows the development of LSPR sensors with a tunable wavelength range between the ultra-violet (UV) and near infra-red (NIR). Furthermore, dealing with LSPR along optical fiber technology, with their low attenuation coefficients at NIR, allow for the possibility to create ultra-sensitive and long-range sensing networks to be deployed in a variety of both biological and chemical sensors. This work provides a detailed review of the key science underpinning such systems as well as recent progress in the development of several LSPR-based biosensors in the NIR wavelengths, including an overview of the LSPR phenomena along recent developments in the field of nanomaterials and nanostructure development towards NIR sensing. The review ends with a consideration of key advances in terms of nanostructure characteristics for LSPR sensing and prospects for future research and advances in this field.

Plasmonic Nanoparticles as Optical Sensing Probes for the Detection of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD), considered a common type of dementia, is mainly characterized by a progressive loss of memory and cognitive functions. Although its cause is multifactorial, it has been associated with the accumulation of toxic aggregates of the amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) of tau protein. At present, the development of highly sensitive, high cost-effective, and non-invasive diagnostic tools for AD remains a challenge. In the last decades, nanomaterials have emerged as an interesting and useful tool in nanomedicine for diagnostics and therapy. In particular, plasmonic nanoparticles are well-known to display unique optical properties derived from their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), allowing their use as transducers in various sensing configurations and enhancing detection sensitivity. Herein, this review focuses on current advances in in vitro sensing techniques such as Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), Surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF), colorimetric, and LSPR using plasmonic nanoparticles for improving the sensitivity in the detection of main biomarkers related to AD in body fluids. Additionally, we refer to the use of plasmonic nanoparticles for in vivo imaging studies in AD.

A facile wet-chemistry approach to engineer an Au-based SERS substrate and enhance sensitivity down to ppb-level detection

A two-dimensional flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) filter substrate provides an alternative strategy for the highly sensitive portable detection of various toxic molecules and biomaterials. Herein, we developed a solid-liquid interfacial reduction reaction to post-engineer a solid Au nanostructure surface on filter paper to improve the SERS effect. Among four reductants (ascorbic acid, l-dopamine, hydroquinone (HQ), and formaldehyde), HQ possessed a larger oxidation overpotential and facilitated homogeneous growth, forming small Au branch-structure nanoparticles from HAuCl4 solution. Due to the surface effect by exposing abundant -OH groups and intrinsic aromatic rings from TNA/HQ on nano-gold, the SERS effect on positively charged analytes near the plasmonic Au surface was enhanced, while forming a protective layer against severe water interruption. The resulting SERS substrate with branched nano-gold provided several SERS-enhanced sites, increased the enhancement by more than 6 times compared to original SERS sensing, and displayed a 1.4-7.4 × 105 analytical enhancement factor, which leads to a limit of detection down to several ppb. Less than 6% of deviation in the SERS intensity at different sensing sites was observed. We successfully improved the primary SERS substrate using a high overpotential reductant. Owing to its soft and flexible properties, the paper-based SERS substrate can be used conveniently in different sizes, pasting on curved materials, detecting additives in fish, and preventing the coffee-ring effect, showing high practicality and potential commercial value in the future.

Tip-to-tip assembly of urchin-like Au nanostar at water-oil interface for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy detection

Au Nanostar (NS) monolayer as a surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate has been synthesized by self-assembly at a water-oil interface. It is confirmed from the experiment and simulation results that the Au NS monolayer includes lots of "hot spots" at or between the tips of the Au NSs, enhancing the local electromagnetic fields and giving rise to strong SERS signals sequentially. The limit of detection is determined to be down to 4.2 × 10^-12 M for rhodamine 6G. Furthermore, the Au NS monolayer can detect multiple molecules, including thiabendazole, methylene blue, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, and p-amino thiophenol, indicating that the SERS substrate composed of Au NS monolayer has potential applications in analytical chemistry, food safety, and environmental safety.

Large-Area Nanogap-Controlled 3D Nanoarchitectures Fabricated via Layer-by-Layer Nanoimprint

The fabrication of large-area and flexible nanostructures currently presents various challenges related to the special requirements for 3D multilayer nanostructures, ultrasmall nanogaps, and size-controlled nanomeshes. To overcome these rigorous challenges, a simple method for fabricating wafer-scale, ultrasmall nanogaps on a flexible substrate using a temperature above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the substrate and by layer-by-layer nanoimprinting is proposed here. The size of the nanogaps can be easily controlled by adjusting the pressure, heating time, and heating temperature. In addition, 3D multilayer nanostructures and nanocomposites with 2, 3, 5, 7, and 20 layers were fabricated using this method. The fabricated nanogaps with sizes ranging from approximately 1 to 40 nm were observed via high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The multilayered nanostructures were evaluated using focused ion beam (FIB) technology. Compared with conventional methods, our method could not only easily control the size of the nanogaps on the flexible large-area substrate but could also achieve fast, simple, and cost-effective fabrication of 3D multilayer nanostructures and nanocomposites without any post-treatment. Moreover, a transparent electrode and nanoheater were fabricated and evaluated. Finally, surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates with different nanogaps were evaluated using rhodamine 6G. In conclusion, it is believed that the proposed method can solve the problems related to the high requirements of nanofabrication and can be applied in the detection of small molecules and for manufacturing flexible electronics and soft actuators.

A pH-controlled one-pot synthesis of gold nanostars by using a zwitterionic protein hydrolysate (gelatin): an enhanced radiosensitization of cancer cells

One-pot green synthesis of gold nanoparticles of desired shapes is developed by using FDA approved and economic GRAS materials. The gold nanoparticles exhibit radio-sensitization in A549 cells with star shaped nanoparticles showing maximum efficacy.

Plasmonic gold nanostructures for biosensing and bioimaging

As one kind of noble metal nanostructures, the plasmonic gold nanostructures possess unique optical properties as well as good biocompatibility, satisfactory stability, and multiplex functionality. These distinctive advantages make the plasmonic gold nanostructures an ideal medium in developing methods for biosensing and bioimaging. In this review, the optical properties of the plasmonic gold nanostructures were firstly introduced, and then biosensing in vitro based on localized surface plasmon resonance, Rayleigh scattering, surface-enhanced fluorescence, and Raman scattering were summarized. Subsequently, application of the plasmonic gold nanostructures for in vivo bioimaging based on scattering, photothermal, and photoacoustic techniques  has been also briefly covered. At last, conclusions of the selected examples are presented and an outlook of this research topic is given.

Completely green synthesis of rose-shaped Au nanostructures and their catalytic applications

A novel protocol for the one-pot, template/seed-free, and completely green synthesis of rose-shaped Au nanostructures with unique three-dimensional hierarchical structures was developed.

Biomacromolecular-Assembled Nanoclusters: Key Aspects for Robust Colloidal SERS Sensing

Superstructures of gold nanospheres offer augmented surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activities beyond the limits of their individual building blocks. However, for application as reliable and quantitative colloidal SERS probes, some key aspects need to be considered to combine efficiency and robustness with respect to hotspot excitation, analyte adsorption, signal stability, and colloidal stability. For this purpose, we studied core/satellite superstructures with spherical cores as a simple optically isotropic model system. Superstructures of different core sizes were assembled using bovine serum albumin (BSA), which serves as a non-specific biomacromolecular linker and provides electrosteric stabilization. We show that the "noisy" spectral footprint of the protein coating may serve as an internal standard, which allows accurate monitoring of the adsorption kinetics of analytes. The SERS activity was quantified using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) as an aromatic low-molecular-weight model analyte. The molar SERS efficiency was studied by variation of the particle (Au⁰) and analyte concentrations with a limit of detection of 10^-7 M MBA. The practical importance of colloidal stability for robust measurement conditions was demonstrated by comparing the superstructures with their citrate-stabilized or protein-coated building blocks. We explain the theoretical background of hotspot formation by a leader/follower relationship of asymmetric control between the core and the satellites and give practical guidelines for robust colloidal SERS sensing probes.

Positively charged gold-silver nanostar enabled molecular characterization of cancer associated extracellular vesicles

Direct surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has contributed to characterizing extracellular vesicles (EVs) by providing molecular signatures. However, little work has been carried out to understand the heterogeneity of EVs created by different methods or from different biological sources. Herein, we pioneered the use of positively charged gold-silver nanostars to explore the SERS profiles of different EVs. The physical features of EVs from cancer cells including the size, concentration, morphology and surface potential have been characterized via nanoparticle tracking analysis, transmission electron microscopy and zeta potential analysis. The results show that negatively charged EVs are attracted to positively charged gold-silver nanostar surfaces via electrostatic forces resulting in SERS spectra showing characteristic vibrational modes of the different components of EVs (i.e. proteins, lipids and nucleic acids). SERS data were complemented by other spectroscopic techniques including atomic force microscopy-infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible absorbance spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy providing a more complete molecular picture of EVs. SERS signatures of EVs from different origins, batches, and isolation approaches were compared and analyzed. A statistical method (principal component analysis-linear discriminant analysis) was utilized to differentiate EV subtypes. Consequently, a desirable discrimination outcome for blind samples was obtained. This study provides novel insights to deepen our understanding of EV heterogeneity.

Structural Study of the Photo-Mediated Growth of Silver Nanoprisms

We present a small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) study of the anisotropic photoinduced growth of silver (Ag) nanoprisms in aqueous dispersions. The growth of nearly spherical (<10 nm) Ag particles into large (>40 nm) and thin (<10 nm) triangular nanoprisms induced by 550 nm laser is followed in terms of particle size using indirect and direct methods for irradiation times up to 150 min. During the process, the surface-to-volume ratio of the particles decreased. The SAXS data of the initial solution fit well to the model of polydisperse spheres with pronounced average diameters around 7.4 nm and 10 nm. The data after 45 min irradiation fit well to the model containing approximately the same amount of the initial particles and the end product, the nanoprisms.

Atom transfer between precision nanoclusters and polydispersed nanoparticles: a facile route for monodisperse alloy nanoparticles and their superstructures

Reactions between atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) have been studied widely in the recent past, but such processes between NCs and plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) have not been explored earlier. For the first time, we demonstrate spontaneous reactions between an atomically precise NC, Au25(PET)18 (PET = 2-phenylethanethiol), and polydispersed silver NPs with an average diameter of 4 nm and protected with PET, resulting in alloy NPs under ambient conditions. These reactions were specific to the nature of the protecting ligands as no reaction was observed between the Au25(SBB)18 NC (SBB = 4-(tert-butyl)benzyl mercaptan) and the very same silver NPs. The mechanism involves an interparticle exchange of the metal and ligand species where the metal-ligand interface plays a vital role in controlling the reaction. The reaction proceeds through transient Au25-xAgx(PET)n alloy cluster intermediates as observed in time-dependent electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis of the resulting dispersion showed the transformation of polydispersed silver NPs into highly monodisperse gold-silver alloy NPs which assembled to form 2-dimensional superlattices. Using NPs of other average sizes (3 and 8 nm), we demonstrated that size plays an important role in the reactivity as observed in ESI MS and HRTEM.
