Rare earth oxide based electrocatalysts: synthesis, properties and applications

As an important strategic resource, rare earths (REs) constitute 17 elements in the periodic table, namely 15 lanthanides (Ln) (La-Lu, atomic numbers from 57 to 71), scandium (Sc, atomic number 21) and yttrium (Y, atomic number 39). In the field of catalysis, the localization and incomplete filling of 4f electrons endow REs with unique physical and chemical properties, including rich electronic energy level structures, variable coordination numbers, etc., making them have great potential in electrocatalysis. Among various RE catalytic materials, rare earth oxide (REO)-based electrocatalysts exhibit excellent performances in electrocatalytic reactions due to their simple preparation process and strong structural variability. At the same time, the electronic orbital structure of REs exhibits excellent electron transfer ability, which can reduce the band gap and energy barrier values of rate-determining steps, further accelerating the electron transfer in the electrocatalytic reaction process; however, there is a lack of systematic review of recent advances in REO-based electrocatalysis. This review systematically summarizes the synthesis, properties and applications of REO-based nanocatalysts and discusses their applications in electrocatalysis in detail. It includes the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) and other electrocatalytic reactions and further discusses the catalytic mechanism of REs in the above reactions. This review provides a timely and comprehensive summary of the current progress in the application of RE-based nanomaterials in electrocatalytic reactions and provides reasonable prospects for future electrocatalytic applications of REO-based materials.

f-Element heavy pnictogen chemistry

The coordination and organometallic chemistry of the f-elements, that is group 3, lanthanide, and actinide ions, supported by nitrogen ligands, e.g. amides, imides, and nitrides, has become well developed over many decades. In contrast, the corresponding f-element chemisty with the heavier pnictogen analogues phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth has remained significantly underdeveloped, due largely to a lack of suitable synthetic methodologies and also the inherent hard(f-element)-soft(heavier pnictogen) acid-base mismatch, but has begun to flourish in recent years. Here, we review complexes containing chemical bonds between the f-elements and heavy pnictogens from phosphorus to bismuth that spans five decades of endeavour. We focus on complexes whose identity has been unambiguously established by structural authentication by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with respect to their synthesis, characterisation, bonding, and reactivity, in order to provide a representative overview of this burgeoning area. By highlighting that much has been achieved but that there is still much to do this review aims to inspire, focus and guide future efforts in this area.

Enhancement of Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction by Introducing Lanthanum Species in the Carbon Shell

The development of cost-effective non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) opens up the possibility for sustainable energy systems. Herein, we report a surface overcoating strategy with lanthanum organic complex (La-OC) as the precursor to prepare lanthanum species (La-SPc) encapsulated in nitrogen, fluorine, and sulfur self-doped porous carbon (NFS-PC) composites (La-SPc@NFS-PC) for efficient ORR and OER. The La-SPc is introduced not only as a promoter to increase the electrochemical stability of the La-SPc@NFS-PC catalysts but also to tailor the electronic structure of NFS-PC due to the unique electrochemical properties of La-SPc. In addition, the integration of La-SPc and NFS-PC can improve the electronic conductivity of composites by inducing electron redistribution and lowering the band gap, which is advantageous in enhancing the kinetics of charge transfer. Simultaneously, benefiting from the optimized porous structure and positive cooperation of La-SPc with NFS-PC shells, the obtained La-SPc@NFS-PC-3 delivers robust bifunctional ORR/OER activities and stabilities. More importantly, the Zn-air battery (ZAB) assembled with La-SPc@NFS-PC-3 demonstrates an outstanding power density (181.1 mW cm-2) and long cycling life, outperforming the commercial Pt/C. This work offers a rational approach to preparing high-efficiency rare-earth-based catalysts and provides potential applications in ZABs.

Low-Pt Octahedral PtCuCo Nanoalloys: "One Stone, Four Birds" for Oxygen Reduction and Methanol Oxidation Reactions

To find a low-Pt electrocatalyst that is functionally integrated and superior to the state-of-the-art single-Pt electrocatalyst is expectedly a challenge. We have in this study found that the reactivity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes (viz., four half-cell reactions), can be modified and greatly enhanced by the electronic and/or synergistic effects of a low-Pt octahedral PtCuCo alloy. For the ORR, the mass activity (MA) of Pt_0.23Cu_0.64Co_0.13/C in an acidic or alkaline electrolyte was 14.3 or 10.7 times that of the commercial Pt/C. For the MOR, the MA of Pt_0.23Cu_0.64Co_0.13/C in an acidic or alkaline electrolyte was 7.2 or 3.4 times that of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, Pt_0.23Cu_0.64Co_0.13/C exhibited an increased durability and CO tolerance, as compared with the commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the PtCuCo(111) surface can effectively optimize the O* binding energy. This work has successfully shown an example of how both acidic and alkaline ORR and MOR activities can be significantly synchronously enhanced.

MOF-enabled confinement and related effects for chemical catalyst presentation and utilization

A defining characteristic of nearly all catalytically functional MOFs is uniform, molecular-scale porosity. MOF pores, linkers and nodes that define them, help regulate reactant and product transport, catalyst siting, catalyst accessibility, catalyst stability, catalyst activity, co-catalyst proximity, composition of the chemical environment at and beyond the catalytic active site, chemical intermediate and transition-state conformations, thermodynamic affinity of molecular guests for MOF interior sites, framework charge and density of charge-compensating ions, pore hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, pore and channel rigidity vs. flexibility, and other features and properties. Collectively and individually, these properties help define overall catalyst functional behaviour. This review focuses on how porous, catalyst-containing MOFs capitalize on molecular-scale confinement, containment, isolation, environment modulation, energy delivery, and mobility to accomplish desired chemical transformations with potentially superior selectivity or other efficacy, especially in comparison to catalysts in homogeneous solution environments.

Novel synthesis of in situ CeOx nanoparticles decorated on CoP nanosheets for highly efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

CoP nanosheets decorated by in-situ CeOx nanoparticles were designed through a novel two-step solvothermal-phosphating strategy, which act as an electrode exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance toward OER in alkaline condition.

f-Element silicon and heavy tetrel chemistry

The last three decades have seen a significant increase in the number of reports of f-element carbon chemistry, whilst the f-element chemistry of silicon, germanium, tin, and lead remain underdeveloped in comparison. Here, in this perspective we review complexes that contain chemical bonds between f-elements and silicon or the heavier tetrels since the birth of this field in 1985 to present day, with the intention of inspiring researchers to contribute to its development and explore the opportunities that it presents. For the purposes of this perspective, f-elements include lanthanides, actinides and group 3 metals. We focus on complexes that have been structurally authenticated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and horizon-scan for future opportunities and targets in the area.

Multidimensional Classification of Catalysts in Oxidative Coupling of Methane through Machine Learning and High-Throughput Data

Understanding the unique features of catalysts is a complex matter as it requires quantitative analysis with a relatively large selection of catalyst data. Here, unique features of each catalyst within the oxidative methane of coupling (OCM) reaction are investigated by combining data science and high throughput experimental data. Visualization of high-throughput OCM data reveals that there are several groups of catalysts based on their response against experimental conditions. Unsupervised machine learning, in particular, the Gaussian mixture model, classifies the OCM catalysts into six groups based on similarity in catalytic activities. Data visualization and parallel coordinates unveil the unique catalytic features of each classified group. Each classified group is statistically analyzed where unique features of each group are defined in term of C₂ selectivity, CH₄ conversion, and their composition in each calssified group. Thus, systematic design of catalysts can be achieved in principle on the basis of the unique features of catalysts uncovered via data science.

Inner Sphere Electron Transfer Promotion on Homogeneously Dispersed Fe-Nx Centers for Energy-Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The study reports the optimized incorporation of pyridinic nitrogen in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to realize effective Fe-N_x centers throughout the framework. The study unveils nitrogen as a valuable asset to promote the homogeneous dispersion of Fe moieties throughout the CNT framework, which is a necessary component to institute uniform Fe-N_x centers. In addition, pyridinic nitrogen causes disruption in strongly delocalized π-electrons, which impart electron-withdrawing nature in the carbon matrix, resulting in an anodic shift in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) onset potential (E_onset). The direct interaction of Fe-N_x with O₂, as evidenced by poisoning and computational studies, ensures the preferential inner sphere electron transfer mechanism. Despite the alkaline medium, the outer sphere electron transfer mechanism was muted, with suppressed HO₂^- generation, preferential 4e^- reduction pathways, and excellent cyclic stability. The study indicates the dependency of ORR half-wave potential on the electron transfer mechanism. The poisoning study unveils the direct involvement of Fe-N_x electroactive centers in facilitating ORR in alkaline medium. It further indicates a noticable increase (up to ∼25%) in peroxide generation-an unwanted ORR intermediate-and concomitant reduction in average electron transfer no. per oxygen molecule.

The chemistry of Ce-based metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained widespread attention due to their modular construction that allows the tuning of their properties. Within this vast class of compounds, metal carboxylates containing tri- and tetravalent metal ions have been in the focus of many studies due to their often high thermal and chemical stabilities. Cerium has a rich chemistry, which depends strongly on its oxidation state. Ce(iii) exhibits properties typically observed for rare earth elements, while Ce(iv) is mostly known for its oxidation behaviour. In MOF chemistry this is reflected in their unique optical and catalytic properties. The synthetic parameters for Ce(iii)- and Ce(iv)-MOFs also differ substantially and conditions must be chosen to prevent reduction of Ce(iv) for the formation of the latter. Ce(iii)-MOFs are usually reported in comprehensive studies together with those constructed with other RE elements and normally they are isostructural. They exhibit a greater structural diversity, which is reflected in the larger variety of inorganic building units. In contrast, the synthesis conditions of Ce(iv)-MOFs were only recently (2015) established. These lead selectively to hexanuclear Ce-O clusters that are well-known for Zr-MOFs and therefore very similar structural and isoreticluar chemistry is found. Hence Ce(iv)-MOFs exhibit often high porosity, while only a few porous Ce(iii)-MOFs have been described. Some of these show structural flexibility which makes them interesting for separation processes. For Ce(iv)-MOFs the redox properties are most relevant. Thus, they are intensively discussed for catalytic, photocatalytic and sensing applications. In this perspective, the synthesis, structural chemistry and properties of Ce-MOFs are summarized.

Triazine Poly(carboxylic acid) Metal-Organic Frameworks and the Fluorescent Response with Lead Oxygen Clusters: [Pb7(COO)12X2] by Halogen Tuning (X = Cl, Br, or I)

A series of novel metal-organic frameworks were synthesized by using semirigid ligand 1,1',1″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tripiperidine-4-carboxylic acid (H₃TTPCA) and lead halide (Cl, Br, or I). The three complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis demonstrated that all three complexes were three-dimensional inorganic-organic framework structures with Pb-X₂ (X = Cl, Br, or I). However, slight differences in the chemical environment were the focus of the coordinated halogen atoms and the different compositions of metal oxygen clusters: [Pb₇(COO)₁₂Cl₂], [Pb₇(COO)₁₂Br₂], and [Pb₇(COO)₁₂I₂]. Because of the fluorescence of the organic ligand, the three complexes showed similar photoluminescence properties at room temperature, but the intensity of emissions decreased gradually with an increase in the atomic radius of coordinated halogen atoms. Interestingly, in the fluorescence response tests, complexes 1 and 2 displayed an optical signal of fluorescence "turn-on" while complex 3 showed an optical signal of fluorescence "turn-off". Here we aim to provide a possible mechanism to explain these unique and contradictory luminescence results.

Finely Tuned Structure and Catalytic Performance of Cerium Oxides by a Continuous Samarium Doping from 0 to 100

Cerium oxides are prevalent catalytic materials, and the lanthanide-doped ceria have attracted special interest since it is easy to tune the concentration of oxygen vacancies (V_O) by changing the doping content. The presence of V_O is generally believed to favor a catalytic reaction, but the formation of dopant-vacancy associations at a high doping concentration might produce an adverse effect. Herein, evolutions of the structural properties and catalytic performances in Sm-doped ceria (Sm_xCe_1-xO_2-δ, x = 0-1) are investigated to explore the doping effect of Sm³⁺ on the ceria-based nanoctrystals. The Sm_xCe_1-xO_2-δ films composed of nanoctrystals are elaborately prepared via electrodeposition under mild conditions to prevent phase separation. A combination of studies, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman, photoluminescence (PL), and methanol electro-oxidation (MEO) reaction, reveals that variation trends for the V_O concentration and catalytic property of Sm_xCe_1-xO_2-δ are unsynchronized. The lattice structures of Sm_xCe_1-xO_2-δ nanoctrystals undergo a smooth and steady transition from F-type (fluorite CeO₂) to C-type (cubic Sm₂O₃) with the increase of Sm³⁺ contents. The structural transition occurs in the Sm³⁺ concentration range of 64-84%, within which the V_O concentration reaches the maximum as well. However, the optimal MEO performance is obtained at a relatively lower doping concentration of 24%. Above this concentration, significant dopant-vacancy associates are observed by XRD, Raman, and PL characterizations. It is inferred that, for these ceria-based nanocrystals, the dopant-vacancy association induced by high doping would impede the growth of catalytic performance despite all the benefits of V_O.

Facile route to achieve bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions derived from CeO2 encapsulated by the zeolitic imidazolate framework-67

ZIF-67 derived N-doped carbon embedded with CeO₂ and Co nanoparticles demonstrated excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance for the ORR and OER.

Cerium-based UiO-66 metal–organic frameworks explored as efficient redox catalysts: titanium incorporation and generation of abundant oxygen vacancies

For the first time, UiO-66(Ce) was endowed with greatly improved redox photocatalytic activity via Ti incorporation, based on the formation of oxygen vacancies.

CeO x-Decorated NiFe-Layered Double Hydroxide for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution by Oxygen Vacancy Engineering

As a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting, NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) demonstrates an excellent activity toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution. However, its hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity is challenged owing to the poor electronic conductivity and insufficient electrochemical active sites. Therefore, a three-dimensional self-supporting metal hydroxide/oxide electrode with abundant oxygen vacancies is prepared by electrodepositing CeO _x nanoparticles on NiFe LDH nanosheets. According to the density functional theory calculations and experimental studies, the oxygen vacancies at the NiFe LDH/CeO _x interface can be introduced successfully because of the positive charges accumulation resulting from the local electron potential difference between NiFe LDH and CeO _x. The oxygen vacancies accelerate the electron/ion migration rates, facilitate the charge transfer, and increase the electrochemical active sites, which give rise to an efficient activity toward HER in alkaline solution. Furthermore, NF@NiFe LDH/CeO _x needs a lower potential of 1.51 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in overall water splitting and demonstrates a superior performance compared with the benchmark Pt/C and RuO₂, which is indicated to be a promising bifunctional electrode catalyst.
