Abstract
In this paper, we successfully synthesize phosphoric acid functionalized graphene oxide (PGO) based on acid modification of graphene oxide. The composite membrane is further prepared by adding PGO into sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone sulfone) containing carboxyl groups matrix (C-SPAEKS). The PGO as well as the composite membranes were characterized by a series of tests. The prepared composite proton exchange membranes (PEMs) have good mechanical and electrochemical properties. Compared to the C-SPAEKS membrane, the best composite membrane has a tensile strength of 40.7 MPa while exhibiting superior proton conductivity (110.17 mS cm-1 at 80 °C). In addition, the open-circuit voltage and power density of C-SPAEKS@1% PGO are 0.918 V and 792.17 mW cm-2, respectively. Compared with C-SPAEKS (0.867 V and 166 mW cm-2), it can be seen that our work has a certain effect on the improvement of the single cell performance. The above results demonstrate that the functionalized graphene oxide has greatly improved the electrochemical performance and even the overall performance of PEMs.

Abstract
Proton-conducting sulfonated polymer metal-organic framework (MOF)-based composite membranes were synthesized by anchoring the nickel MOF (Ni-MOF) to the aromatic sulfonated polymer backbone. In this work, we sulfonated two different polymers, poly(1,4-phenylene ether ether sulfone) (PEES) and poly ether ether ketone (PEEK), with a controllable sulfonation degree, and the synthesized Ni-MOF was incorporated into the sulfonated polymers to prepare a polymer electrolyte membrane. The effect of an MOF as a pendant moiety on the polymer backbone had a significant effect on properties such as water uptake, thermal, mechanical, and oxidative stabilities, swelling ratio, ion-exchange capacity (IEC), morphology, proton conductivity, and fuel-cell performance. The presence of an MOF structure enhanced the water retention capacity of the composite membranes. Adding Ni-MOF to the composite membrane improved the fuel-cell performance by increasing the OCV and power density. Among the synthesized electrolytes, the 3 wt % Ni-MOF-incorporated sPEEK membrane displayed a power density of 319 mW/cm2 with a cell voltage of 0.79 V, which was higher than the pure sulfonated polymer. Thus, the developed composite membranes are suitable for fuel-cell applications.

Abstract
Successive proton conduction channels are constructed with the spin coating method in flexible proton exchange membranes (PEMs). In this research, phosphoric acid (PA) molecules are immobilized in the multilayered microstructure of Kevlar nanofibers and polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS) polymer molecular chains. As a result, successive proton conduction channels can accelerate the proton conduction process in the prepared membrane with the multilayered microstructure. Additionally, the microstructure fractures of the composite membranes from the external force of folding and stretching operations are modified by the inner PA molecules. Notably, numerous PA molecules are further combined through formed intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The stretched membrane absorbs more PA molecules owing to the arrangement of PA molecules, Kevlar nanofibers, and SEBS molecular chains. The stretched membrane thus exhibits the enhanced proton conduction ability, such as the through-plane proton conductivity of 1.81 × 10-1 S cm-1 at 160 °C and that of 4.53 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 120 °C lasting for 600 h. Furthermore, the tensile stress of PA-doped stretched membranes reaches (3.91 ± 0.40)-(6.15 ± 0.43) MPa. A single proton exchange membrane fuel cell exhibits a peak power density of 483.3 mW cm-2 at 120 °C.

Abstract
The disulfide metathesis is a promising candidate in the dynamically exchanged strategy for improving the self-healing ability of polymer electrolytes (PEs). However, the enhancement effects on the ionic conductivities of PEs are generally ignored while introducing a dynamic covalent bond to PEs. Herein, the oligo(ethylene oxide)-based additive containing a disulfide bond (S-S additive) was synthesized via Michael addition reaction of cystamine and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGA). Short PEG chains complexed with Li+ in a S-S additive migrated rapidly in PEs because of the dynamically exchanged strategy of the disulfide bond. Moreover, disulfide bonds in a S-S additive possessed the ability to exchange with the cross-linked network containing disulfide bonds (S-S net). The as-prepared PEs exhibited a high room temperature ionic conductivity of 1.24 × 10-4 S cm-1, demonstrating that the disulfide metathesis-assisted Li+ conduction was feasible for enhancing ionic conductivities of PEs. Relative to other PEO-based PEs, these disulfide-containing PEs possessed a high Li+ transference number (0.54). Furthermore, the lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) assembled with PEs in the presence of a S-S additive presented stable cycle performance, indicating the promising potential of these PEs as candidates for next-generation LMBs.

Abstract
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is an eco-friendly energy conversion device that can convert chemical energy into electrical energy without emission of harmful oxidants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and/or sulfur oxides (SOx) during operation. Nafion®, a representative perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer-based membrane, is generally incorporated in fuel cell systems as a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM). Since the PFSA ionomers are composed of flexible hydrophobic main backbones and hydrophilic side chains with proton-conducting groups, the resulting membranes are found to have high proton conductivity due to the distinct phase-separated structure between hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. However, PFSA ionomer-based membranes have some drawbacks, including high cost, low glass transition temperatures and emission of environmental pollutants (e.g., HF) during degradation. Hydrocarbon-based PEMs composed of aromatic backbones with proton-conducting hydrophilic groups have been actively studied as substitutes. However, the main problem with the hydrocarbon-based PEMs is the relatively low proton-conducting behavior compared to the PFSA ionomer-based membranes due to the difficulties associated with the formation of well-defined phase-separated structures between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. This study focused on the structural engineering of sulfonated hydrocarbon polymers to develop hydrocarbon-based PEMs that exhibit outstanding proton conductivity for practical fuel cell applications.

Abstract
Recycling of acid from aqueous waste streams is crucial not only from the environmental point of view but also for maturing the feasible method (diffusion dialysis). Anion exchange membrane (AEM)–based diffusion dialysis process is one of the beneficial ways to recover acid from aqueous waste streams. In this article, the synthesis of a series of brominated poly (2, 6–dimethyl-1, 4–phenylene oxide) (BPPO)-based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) through quaternization with triphenylphosphine (TPP) were reported for acid recovery via diffusion dialysis process. The successful synthesis of the prepared membranes was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The as-synthesized anion exchange membranes represented water uptake (WR) of 44 to 66%, ion exchange capacity of (IEC) of 1.22 to 1.86 mmol/g, and linear swelling ratio (LSR) of 8 to 20%. They exhibited excellent thermal, mechanical, and acid stability. They showed homogeneous morphology. The acid recovery performance of the synthesized AEMs was investigated in a two compartment stack using simulated mixture of HCl and FeCl2 as feed solution at room temperature. For the synthesized anion exchange membranes TPP–43 to TPP–100, the diffusion dialysis coefficient of acid (UH+) was in the range of 6.7 to 26.3 (10−3 m/h) whereas separation factor (S) was in the range of 27 to 49 at 25 °C. Obtained results revealed that diffusion dialysis performance of the synthesized AEMs was higher than the commercial membrane DF–120B (UH+ = 0.004 m/h, S = 24.3) at room temperature. It showed that the prepared AEMs here could be excellent candidates for the diffusion dialysis process.

Abstract
Novel fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon hybrid block copolymer electrolytes were synthesized. The block copolymer electrolytes consist of poly(perfluoropropyl sulfonimide) (PC3SI) as a perfluorinated hydrophilic segment and poly(ether ether sulfone) as a hydrocarbon hydrophobic segment. The sulfonimide group of poly(perfluoropropyl sulfonimide) has superacidity, very low equivalent weight (EW = 293 g/equiv), and a proton conductivity of 1.2 × 10-2 S/cm under dry conditions and 25 °C, although soluble in water. The proton conductivity of the block copolymer was 1.7 × 10-3 S/cm at 20% relative humidity and 25 °C, which is three times as high as that of Nafion 112.

Abstract
Aldehyde terminated sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES-CHO) is prepared by a series of nucleophilic substitution reaction based on SPAES in this paper. Novel SPAES-graft-SPVA (SPAES-g-SPVA) membranes are fabricated by acetal reaction between SPAES-CHO and different amounts of sulfonated poly (vinyl alcohol) (SPVA). The 1H-NMR and FTIR indicate the successful preparation of SPAES-CHO and SPAES-g-SPVA membranes. With the introduction of SPVA, the SPAES-g-SPVA membranes have much lower methanol permeability than pure SPAES membrane and Nafion117 membrane. The methanol permeability coefficients of the SPAES-g-SPVA membranes decrease from 3.41 × 10−7 cm2 s−1 to 1.67 × 10−7 cm2 s−1 with the increase of SPVA content. And the proton conductivity of all the membranes is higher than 15 mS cm−1 at 25°C. Moreover, SPAES-g-SPVA membranes exhibit high proton selectivity. Especially, SPAES-g-SPVA-30% membrane has the highest proton selectivity, which is nearly five times higher than Nafion117.

Abstract
A series of gas separation membranes based on sulfonated poly(ether ether sulfone)s (SPEESs) can be synthesized by the polycondensation and sulfonation reactions. The structural characteristics of copolymers were confirmed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy. The permeability and selectivity behavior of these membranes were investigated using three single-gases (CO2, O2, and N2) at different temperatures of 25–55°C and pressures of 1.0–3.0 atm. The effect of sulfonation degree (SD), operating temperature, and pressure on gas permeability was explored and discussed. The results showed that SPEESs containing pendant sulfonic acid groups exhibited different separation performance. In particular, the SPEES-4 membrane with an SD of 67% exhibited the highest permeability (CO2 = 513.8 Barrer and O2 = 78.19 Barrer) at 55°C and 1 atm, whereas CO2/N2 and O2/N2 selectivity was 31.09 and 4.73, respectively.

Abstract
The anion exchange membrane may have different physical and chemical properties, electrochemical performance and mechanical stability depending upon the monomer structure, hydrophilicity and hydrophobic repeating unit, surface form and degree of substitution of functional groups. In current work, poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) block copolymer was created and used as the main chain. After controlling the amount of NBS, the degree of bromination (DB) was changed in Br-PAES. Following that, quaternized PAES (Q-PAES) was synthesized through quaternization. Q-PAES showed a tendency of enhancing water content, expansion rate, ion exchange capacity (IEC) as the degree of substitution of functional groups increased. However, it was confirmed that tensile strength and dimensional properties of membrane reduced while swelling degree was increased. In addition, phase separation of membrane was identified by atomic force microscope (AFM) image, while ionic conductivity is greatly affected by phase separation. The Q-PAES membrane demonstrated a reasonable power output of around 64 mW/cm2 while employed as electrolyte in fuel cell operation.

Abstract
A series of novel crosslinkable side-chain sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers (S-SPAES(x/y)) was prepared from 4,4′-biphenol, 4,4′-difluorodiphenyl sulfone, and a new difluoro aromatic monomer 1-(2,6-difluorophenyl)-2-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-1,2-ethanedione (DFDMED) via co-polycondensation, demethylation, and further nucleophilic substitution of 1,4-butane sultone. Meanwhile, quinoxaline-based crosslinked copolymers (CS-SPAES(x/y)) were obtained via cyclo-condensation between S-SPAES(x/y) and 3,3′-diaminobenzidine. Both the crosslinkable and crosslinked copolymer membranes exhibit good mechanical properties and high anisotropic membrane swelling. Crosslinkable S-SPAES(1/2) with an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 2.01 mequiv. g−1 displays a relatively high proton conductivity of 180 mS cm−1 and acceptable single-cell performance, which is attributed to its good microphase separation resulting from the side-chain sulfonated copolymer structures. Compared with S-SPAES(1/1) (IEC of 1.68 mequiv. g−1), crosslinked CS-SPAES(1/2) with a comparable IEC exhibits a larger conductivity of 157 mS cm−1, and significantly higher oxidative stability and lower membrane swelling, suggesting a distinct performance improvement due to the quinoxaline-based crosslinking. A series of novel crosslinkable and crosslinked side-chain SPAES has been prepared. The S-SPAES(1/2) has high proton conductivity and acceptable single-cell performance.![]()

Abstract
The composite structure, good porosity, and electrochemical behavior of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are important characteristics, which can improve the performance of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). In this study, we designed and synthesized an XY block copolymer via a polycondensation reaction that contains sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) (X) as a hydrophilic unit and a fluorinated oligomer (Y) as a hydrophobic unit. The prepared XY block copolymer is composed of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles to create composite architecture, which was subsequently treated with a 1 M H₂SO₄ solution at 70 °C for 1 h to eliminate Fe₃O₄ and generate a pores structure in the membrane. The morphological, physiochemical, thermomechanical, and electrochemical properties of bare XY, XY/Fe₃O₄-9 and XY(porous)-9 membranes were measured and compared in detail. Compared with XY/Fe₃O₄-9 composite, the proton conductivity of XY(porous)-9 membrane was remarkably enhanced as a result of the existence of pores as nano-conducting channels. Similarly, the XY(porous)-9 membrane exhibited enhanced water retention and ion exchange capacity among the prepared membranes. However, the PEFC power density of XY(porous)-9 membrane was still lower than that of XY/Fe₃O₄-9 membrane at 60 °C and 60% relative humidity. Also, the durability of XY(porous)-9 membrane is found to be lower compared with pristine XY and XY/Fe₃O₄-9 membranes as a result of the hydrogen crossover through the pores of the membrane.

Abstract
A series of anion exchange membranes composed of partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (PAESs) multiblock copolymers bearing quaternary ammonium groups were synthesized with controlled lengths of the hydrophilic precursor and hydrophobic oligomer via direct polycondensation. The chloromethylation and quaternization proceeded well by optimizing the reaction conditions to improve hydroxide conductivity and physical stability, and the fabricated membranes were very flexible and transparent. Atomic force microscope images of quaternized PAES (QN-PAES) membranes showed excellent hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase separation and distinct ion transition channels. An extended architecture of phase separation was observed by increasing the hydrophilic oligomer length, which resulted in significant improvements in the water uptake, ion exchange capacity, and hydroxide conductivity. Furthermore, the open circuit voltage (OCV) of QN-PAES X10Y23 and X10Y13 was found to be above 0.9 V, and the maximum power density of QN-PAES X10Y13 was 131.7 mW cm-2 at 60 °C under 100% RH.

Abstract
Sulfonated poly(arylene biphenylether sulfone)-poly(arylene ether) (SPABES-PAE) block copolymers by controlling the molar ratio of SPABES and PAE oligomers were successfully synthesized, and the performances of SPABES-PAE (1:2, 1:1, and 2:1) membranes were compared with Nafion 212. The prepared membranes including fluorinated hydrophobic units were stable against heat, nucleophile attack, and physio-chemical durability during the tests. Moreover, the polymers exhibited better solubility in a variety of solvents. The chemical structure of SPABES-PAEs was investigated by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The membrane of SPABES-PAEs was fabricated by the solution casting method, and the membranes were very flexible and transparent with a thickness of 70⁻90 μm. The morphology of the membranes was observed using atomic force microscope and the ionic domain size was proved by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurement. The incorporation of polymers including fluorinated units allowed the membranes to provide unprecedented oxidative and dimensional stabilities, as verified from the results of ex situ durability tests and water uptake capacity, respectively. By the collective efforts, we observed an enhanced water retention capacity, reasonable dimensional stability and high proton conductivity, and the peak power density of the SPABES-PAE (2:1) was 333.29 mW·cm-2 at 60 °C under 100% relative humidity (RH).

Abstract
In this contribution, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) is inter-connected using a hydrophobic oligomer via poly-condensation reaction to produce SPEEK analogues as PEMs. Prior sulfonation is performed for SPEEK to avoid random sulfonation of multi-block copolymers that may destroy the mechanical toughness of polymer backbone. A greater local density of ionic moieties exist in SPEEK and good thermomechanical properties of hydrophobic unit offer an unique approach to promote the proton conductivity as well as thermomechanical stability of membrane, as verify from AC impedance and TGA. The morphological behavior and phase variation of membranes are explored using FE-SEM and AFM; the triblock (XYX) membranes exhibits a nano-phase separated morphology. Performance of PEFC integrated with blend and block copolymer membranes is determined at 60 °C under 60% RH. As a result, the triblock (XYX) membrane has a high power density than blend (2X1Y) membrane.
