Smart, Piezo-Responsive Polyvinylidenefluoride/Polymethylmethacrylate Surface with Triggerable Water/Oil Wettability and Adhesion

Nature-inspired adhesive systems

Many organisms in nature thrive in intricate habitats through their unique bio-adhesive surfaces, facilitating tasks such as capturing prey and reproduction. It's important to note that the remarkable adhesion properties found in these natural biological surfaces primarily arise from their distinct micro- and nanostructures and/or chemical compositions. To create artificial surfaces with superior adhesion capabilities, researchers delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms of these captivating adhesion phenomena to draw inspiration. This article provides a systematic overview of various biological surfaces with different adhesion mechanisms, focusing on surface micro- and nanostructures and/or chemistry, offering design principles for their artificial counterparts. Here, the basic interactions and adhesion models of natural biological surfaces are introduced first. This will be followed by an exploration of research advancements in natural and artificial adhesive surfaces including both dry adhesive surfaces and wet/underwater adhesive surfaces, along with relevant adhesion characterization techniques. Special attention is paid to stimulus-responsive smart artificial adhesive surfaces with tunable adhesive properties. The goal is to spotlight recent advancements, identify common themes, and explore fundamental distinctions to pinpoint the present challenges and prospects in this field.

Interaction between microorganisms and dental material surfaces: general concepts and research progress

Bacterial adhesion to dental materials’ surfaces is the initial cause of dental materials-related infections. Therefore, inhibiting bacterial adhesion is a critical step in preventing and controlling these infections. To this end, it is important to know how the properties of dental materials affect the interactions between microorganisms and material surfaces to produce materials without biological contamination. This manuscript reviews the mechanism of bacterial adhesion to dental materials, the relationships between their surface properties and bacterial adhesion, and the impact of bacterial adhesion on their surface properties. In addition, this paper summarizes how these surface properties impact oral biofilm formation and proposes designing intelligent dental material surfaces that can reduce biological contamination.

Physically Switchable Antimicrobial Surfaces and Coatings: General Concept and Recent Achievements

Bacterial environmental colonization and subsequent biofilm formation on surfaces represents a significant and alarming problem in various fields, ranging from contamination of medical devices up to safe food packaging. Therefore, the development of surfaces resistant to bacterial colonization is a challenging and actively solved task. In this field, the current promising direction is the design and creation of nanostructured smart surfaces with on-demand activated amicrobial protection. Various surface activation methods have been described recently. In this review article, we focused on the "physical" activation of nanostructured surfaces. In the first part of the review, we briefly describe the basic principles and common approaches of external stimulus application and surface activation, including the temperature-, light-, electric- or magnetic-field-based surface triggering, as well as mechanically induced surface antimicrobial protection. In the latter part, the recent achievements in the field of smart antimicrobial surfaces with physical activation are discussed, with special attention on multiresponsive or multifunctional physically activated coatings. In particular, we mainly discussed the multistimuli surface triggering, which ensures a better degree of surface properties control, as well as simultaneous utilization of several strategies for surface protection, based on a principally different mechanism of antimicrobial action. We also mentioned several recent trends, including the development of the to-detect and to-kill hybrid approach, which ensures the surface activation in a right place at a right time.

Fluorinated Metal-Organic Coatings with Selective Wettability

Surface chemistry is a major factor that determines the wettability of materials, and devising broadly applicable coating strategies that afford tunable and selective surface properties required for next-generation materials remains a challenge. Herein, we report fluorinated metal-organic coatings that display water-wetting and oil-repelling characteristics, a wetting phenomenon different from responsive wetting induced by external stimuli. We demonstrate this selective wettability with a library of metal-organic coatings using catechol-based coordination and silanization (both fluorinated and fluorine-free), enabling sensing through interfacial reconfigurations in both gaseous and liquid environments, and establish a correlation between the coating wettability and polarity of the liquids. This selective wetting performance is substrate-independent, spontaneous, durable, and reversible and occurs over a range of polar and nonpolar liquids (60 studied). These results provide insight into advanced liquid-solid interactions and a pathway toward tuning interfacial affinities and realizing robust, selective superwettability according to the surrounding conditions.

Smart Bionic Surfaces with Switchable Wettability and Applications

In order to satisfy the needs of different applications and more complex intelligent devices, smart control of surface wettability will be necessary and desirable, which gradually become a hot spot and focus in the field of interface wetting. Herein, we review interfacial wetting states related to switchable wettability on superwettable materials, including several classical wetting models and liquid adhesive behaviors based on the surface of natural creatures with special wettability. This review mainly focuses on the recent developments of the smart surfaces with switchable wettability and the corresponding regulatory mechanisms under external stimuli, which is mainly governed by the transformation of surface chemical composition and geometrical structures. Among that, various external stimuli such as physical stimulation (temperature, light, electric, magnetic, mechanical stress), chemical stimulation (pH, ion, solvent) and dual or multi-triggered stimulation have been sought out to realize the regulation of surface wettability. Moreover, we also summarize the applications of smart surfaces in different fields, such as oil/water separation, programmable transportation, anti-biofouling, detection and delivery, smart soft robotic etc. Furthermore, current limitations and future perspective in the development of smart wetting surfaces are also given. This review aims to offer deep insights into the recent developments and responsive mechanisms in smart biomimetic surfaces with switchable wettability under external various stimuli, so as to provide a guidance for the design of smart surfaces and expand the scope of both fundamental research and practical applications.

Intelligent Polymers, Fibers and Applications

Intelligent materials, also known as smart materials, are capable of reacting to various external stimuli or environmental changes by rearranging their structure at a molecular level and adapting functionality accordingly. The initial concept of the intelligence of a material originated from the natural biological system, following the sensing–reacting–learning mechanism. The dynamic and adaptive nature, along with the immediate responsiveness, of the polymer- and fiber-based smart materials have increased their global demand in both academia and industry. In this manuscript, the most recent progress in smart materials with various features is reviewed with a focus on their applications in diverse fields. Moreover, their performance and working mechanisms, based on different physical, chemical and biological stimuli, such as temperature, electric and magnetic field, deformation, pH and enzymes, are summarized. Finally, the study is concluded by highlighting the existing challenges and future opportunities in the field of intelligent materials.

Advanced Materials with Special Wettability toward Intelligent Oily Wastewater Remediation

Clean water resources are essential to our human society. Oil leakage has caused water contamination, which leads to serious shortage of clean water, environmental deterioration, and even increasing number of deaths. It is of great urgency to solve the oil-polluted water problems worldwide. Efficient oil/water separation, especially emulsified oil/water mixture separation, is widely used to mitigate water pollution issues. Recently, advanced materials with special wettability have been employed for oily wastewater remediation. Moreover, by endowing them with various intelligent functions, smart materials can effectively separate complex oil/water mixtures including extremely stable emulsions. In this review, oil/water separation mechanisms and various fabrication methods of special wettability separation materials are summarized. We highlight the special wettable materials with intelligent functions, including photocatalytic, self-healing, and switchable oil/water separation materials, which can achieve self-cleaning, self-healing, and efficient oily wastewater treatment. In each section, the acting mechanisms, fabricating technologies, representative studies, and separation efficiency are briefly introduced. Lastly, the challenges and outlook for oil/water separation based on the special wettability materials are discussed.

Direct Fluorination as Method of Improvement of Operational Properties of Polymeric Materials

Direct fluorination of polymers is a widely utilized technique for chemical modification. Such introduction of fluorine into the chemical structure of polymeric materials leads to laminates with highly fluorinated surface layer. The physicochemical properties of this layer are similar to those of perfluorinated polymers that differ by a unique combination of chemical resistance, weak adhesion, low cohesion, and permittivity, often barrier properties, etc. Surface modification by elemental fluorine allows one to avoid laborious synthesis of perfluoropolymers and impart such properties to industrial polymeric materials. The current review is devoted to a detailed consideration of wetting by water, energy characteristics of surfaces, adhesion, mechanical and electrical properties of the polymers, and composites after the direct fluorination.

Piezoelectric Nanocellulose Thin Film with Large-Scale Vertical Crystal Alignment

Cellulosic materials are attractive candidates for nature piezoelectrics. Vertically aligned cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) films are expected to show strong piezoelectricity as the largest dipole moment in CNCs exists along the cellulose chain. In this work, we adapted the confinement cell technology that was used to fabricate colloidal opal structures to align CNC rods vertically on a large scale. The high interfacial energy between the CNC-poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) surface and torque induced by the shear force led to a large degree to the vertical alignment of CNC rods. An external DC electric field was added to further align the dipole moment of each CNC to the same direction. The as-obtained CNC film displayed excellent piezoelectric performance, and the piezoelectric coefficient was found to be 19.3 ± 2.9 pm/V, comparable to the piezoelectric coefficient d₃₃ of poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) (20-30 pm/V). This work presents a new class of high-performance piezoelectric polymeric materials from renewable and biocompatible natural resources.

Robust Biomimetic Hierarchical Diamond Architecture with a Self-Cleaning, Antibacterial, and Antibiofouling Surface

Biofouling is a worldwide problem from healthcare to marine exploration. Aggressive biofouling, wear, and corrosion lead to severe deterioration in function and durability. Here, micro- and nanostructured hierarchical diamond films mimicking the morphology of plant leaves were developed to simultaneously achieve superhydrophobicity, antibacterial efficacy, and marine antibiofouling, combined with mechanical and chemical robustness. These coatings were designed and successfully constructed on various commercial substrates, such as titanium alloys, silicon, and quartz glass via a chemical vapor deposition process. The unique surface structure of diamond films reduced bacteria attachment by 90-99%. In the marine environment, these biomimetic diamond films significantly reduced more than 95% adhesion of green algae. The structured diamond films retained mechanical robustness, superhydrophobicity, and antibacterial efficacy under high abrasion and corrosive conditions, exhibiting at least 20 times enhanced wear resistance than the bare commercial substrates even after long-term immersion in seawater.

Design of Active Interfaces Using Responsive Molecular Components

Responsive interfaces are interfaces that show a defined and reversible change in physical properties in response to external stimuli. Typically, responsive interfaces result from the immobilization of responsive molecular components at the interface that translate a nanoscale signal into a macroscopic effect. Responsive interfaces can also be obtained if the topology of the interface can be reversibly changed using an external stimulus. As the surface of any material is its connection to the environment, responsive interfaces provide opportunities for interactive materials which are not only able to change properties upon demand, but also sense their environment and act autonomously. The application of responsive molecular components at interfaces, however, requires chemical and physical compatibility with the material surface of interest, posing a challenge not least in the retention of the responsive functionality. The state of the art in "active" interfaces which display responsive wettability, permeability, or adhesion is discussed, with a particular emphasis on microscale and nanoscale patterning since patterned interfaces can give rise to unique material properties. Finally, perspectives in the development of responsive interfaces, as well as promising approaches for bypassing the most prominent challenges are discussed.

Multifunctional Antibacterial Materials Comprising Water Dispersible Random Copolymers Containing a Fluorinated Block and Their Application in Catheters

Inhibiting the attachment of bacteria and the formation of biofilms on surfaces of materials and devices is the key to ensure public safety and is also the focus of attention and research. Here we report on the synthesis of multifunctional antibacterial materials based on water dispersible random copolymers containing a fluorinated block, poly(acrylic acid-co-1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorododecyl acrylate) (PAA-co-PFDA), and poly(hexamethylene biguanide) hydrochloride (PHMB). PAA-co-PFDA copolymers were synthesized through a simple free radical polymerization. After lightly cross-linking of PAA-co-PFDA and complexation with PHMB, multifunctional antibacterial PAA-co-PFDA/PHMB complex nanoparticles were generated, which can form transparent coatings on various substrates. The resultant coating has aggregation-induced emission character which can be used to observe the uniformity of the coating on a catheter and has a potential application as a fluorescence probe. It has been demonstrated that the PAA-co-PFDA/PHMB complex nanoparticle coatings can resist bacterial adhesion in physiological environment and exhibit excellent antibacterial activity in infection environment. In vitro and in vivo experiments indicated that the PAA-co-PFDA/PHMB complex nanoparticle coated catheters exhibited excellent antibacterial activity and possessed good biocompatibility. This method is simple and scalable, which is important for future commercialization. The attractive multifunctional properties of the PAA-co-PFDA/PHMB complex nanoparticles, such as antifouling, antimicrobial, emission, and pH-responsive release character, have great potential application in a wide range of biomedical fields.

Building a smart surface with converse temperature-dependent wettability based on poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile)

A smart surface with converse temperature-dependent (CTD) wettability was fabricated from an upper critical solution temperature-type (UCST-type) poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) (P(AAm-co-AN)) copolymer. The obtained surface exhibits a remarkable and reversible hydrophobic-hydrophilic transition depending on temperature with a high response rate. The static water contact angle of the surface decreases from 103° ± 2° to 60° ± 1° as the temperature increases from 30 °C to 80 °C. Further, the wettability of the UCST-type surface shows a positive linear relationship between wettability and temperature. This study for the first time provides an UCST-type smart surface with wettability that decreases by over 35° as the temperature increases by only 20 °C.

Asynchronous generation of oil droplets using a microfluidic flow focusing system

Here, we show that long-term exposure of PDMS based microfluidic droplet generation systems to water can reverse their characteristics such that they generate oil-in-water droplets instead of water-in-oil droplets. The competition between two oil columns entering via the two side channels leads to asynchronous generation of oil droplets. We identify various modes of droplet generation, and study the size, gap and generation rate of droplets under different combinations of oil and water pressures. Oil droplets can also be generated using syringe pumps, various oil viscosities, and different combinations of immiscible liquids. We also demonstrate the ability to dynamically change the gap between the oil droplets from a few hundred microns to just a few microns in successive cycles using a latex balloon pressure pump. This method requires no special equipment or chemical treatments, and importantly can be reversed by long-term exposure of the PDMS surfaces to the ambient air.
