Abstract
With the rapid development of fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs), such as CDs, QDs, and MOFs, the construction of FNP-based probes has played a key role in improving chemical sensors. Ratiometric fluorescent probes exhibit distinct advantages, such as resistance to environmental interference and achieving visualization. Thus, FNP-based dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent probes (DRFPs) have rapidly developed in the field of metal ion and small molecule detection in the past few years. In this review, firstly we introduce the fluorescence sensing mechanisms; then, we focus on the strategies for the fabrication of DRFPs, including hybrid FNPs, single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission and target-induced new emission, and DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles. In the section on hybrid FNPs, methods to assemble two types of FNPs, such as chemical bonding, electrostatic interaction, core satellite or core-shell structures, coordination, and encapsulation, are introduced. In the section on single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission, methods for the design of dual-emission CDs, QDs, and MOFs are discussed. Regarding target-induced new emission, sensitization, coordination, hydrogen bonding, and chemical reaction induced new emissions are discussed. Furthermore, in the section on DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles, auxiliary nanomaterials with the inner filter effect and enzyme mimicking activity are discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and an outlook on the future of DRFP are presented. We sincerely hope that this review will contribute to the quick understanding and exploration of DRFPs by researchers.

Abstract
The reactions of Zn(NO3)2, 3,6-bis(pyridin-3-yl)-9H-carbazole (bpycz), and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (H4dhbdc) or 2-bromoterephthalic acid (Br-1,4-H2bdc) under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions yielded corresponding coordination polymers (CPs) {[Zn(H2dhbdc)(bpycz)]•0.5H2O}n (1) and [Zn(Br-1,4-bdc)(bpycz)]•2DMAc•H2O (2), respectively, with high thermal stability approaching 350 °C. CP 1 adopts a ring-and-rod layer structure, which is topologically described as a 4-connected net with the point symbol of 2•65. Two layers are interpenetrated in parallel interlocking mode to form a double 2D → 2D polyrotaxane entanglement with extra-framework void space of 19.6%. CP 2 has a non-interpenetrating ring-and-rod layer structure of 4-connected 2•65 net topology, with extra-framework void space of 16.6%. Thermally activated 1 and 2 revealed CO2 uptakes of 101.1 and 98.6 cm3 g-1, respectively, at P/P0 = 1 and 195 K. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) patterns confirmed that 1 and 2 both possessed high chemical stability in H2O, CH3OH, acetone, and DMF, and framework stability during gas adsorption-desorption. The H2O suspension of 1 displayed excitation-dependent dual-emissive properties, appearing at 432 nm upon excitation at 300 nm and at 528 nm upon excitation at 365 nm. Of note, 1 was capable of detection of Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ ions in H2O, showing good anti-interference ability, excellent selectivity, and high sensitivity. More interesting, the dual-emissive properties make 1 to be an excellent luminescence chemosensor to screen Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ from a pool of metal ions in H2O upon excitation at 300 nm via luminescence quenching effect and then discriminate Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ upon excitation at 365 nm via luminescence quenching, unaltered, and enhancement responses, respectively. On the other hand, the H2O suspension of 2 demonstrated an excitation-independent emission appearing at around 430 nm, which could be utilized to sensitively detect Fe3+ and Cr3+ ions with good anti-interference ability and excellent selectivity via luminescence quenching effect. Further, 1 and 2 were recyclability and possessed cycling stability. The plausible sensing mechanisms for 1 and 2 toward Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ were also explored in detail.

Abstract
In the age of sustainable development, the exploration of multifunctional materials is of high priority due to their economic benefits and environmental suitability. A stable luminescent coordination polymer, [Zn2(tdc)4(pdiq)3] (1), (pdiq = pyridyl-imidazoquinazoline; H2tdc = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid) has been prepared and structurally confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The 3D framework consists of a distorted octahedral geometry with a ZnO4N2 coordination sphere where four carboxylato-O donations come from two tdc2- as bridging ligands and two pyridyl-Ns come from two pdiq. The π⋯π interactions between the imidazolium and phenyl groups bestow robustness on the architecture. The compound is chemically stable to water, shows tolerance to acid/base aqueous solutions (pH = 2-12), and is stable to the impact of organic solvents. The high dispersibility of Zn-MOF (1) in acetonitrile may enhance the fluorescence intensity compared to that in water, which prompted fluorescence measurements in the former solvent and it is used for the efficient and selective turn-off ratiometric sensing of Al3+ ions (LOD, 1.39 × 10-7 M). In addition, the fluorescence emission of 1 is instantly quenched by trinitrophenol (TNP) and the LOD is 1.54 × 10-7 M. The Tauc's plot is used to measure the semiconducting band gap (3.33 eV) and the electrical conductivity is significantly increased upon illumination (Λ: 1.14 × 10-3 S m-1 (dark), 5.35 × 10-3 S m-1 (light)) and the energy barrier declines marginally (FB: 0.57 (dark), 0.49 (light)). Transit time (τ) and diffusion length (LD) at the quasi-Fermi level were analyzed to offer information on the charge transport mechanism of the compound. The better performance on photo-irradiation signifies the enhanced charge transfer kinetics of a Zn-MOF coated thin-film device (TFD 1), which encourages its application in semiconductor devices.

Abstract
Picric acid (PA) at low concentration is a serious water pollutant. Alongside, aliphatic amines (AAs) add to the queue to pollute surface water. Plenty of reports are available to sense PA with an ultralow limit of detection (LOD). However, only a handful of works are testified to detect AAs. A new fluorescent donor-acceptor compound has been synthesized with inherent intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character that enables selective and sensitive colorimetric quantitative detection of PA and AAs with low LODs in non-aqueous as well as aqueous solutions. The synthesized compound is based on a hemicyanine skeleton containing two pyridenylmethylamino groups at the donor and a benzothiazole moiety at the acceptor ends. The detailed mechanisms and reaction dynamics are explained spectroscopically along with computational support. The fluorescence property of the detecting compound changes due to protonation of its pyridinyl centers by PA leading to quenching of fluorescence and subsequently de-protonation by AAs to revive the signal. We have further designed logic circuits from the acquired optical responses by sequential interactions.

Abstract
A series of lanthanide coordination polymers [LnL(H2O)2] n [Ln = Pr (1), Nd (2), Sm (3), Eu (4), and Gd (5), H3L = N-(4-carboxy-benzyl)iminodiacetic acid] was hydrothermally prepared and structurally characterized. All the five compounds have been confirmed as 3D Ln-CPs with one-dimensional helical tunnels composed of four helical chains, although there are different coordination geometries around Ln3+. Enantiomeric helixes in 1-3, and absolute left-handed and right-handed helical chains in 4 and 5, respectively, lead to different tunnel spaces. Their conformations can also be featured by different space groups and unit cell dimensions. Photoluminescence measurement on 3 and 4 show characteristic emission peaks of Sm3+ and Eu3+ ions, respectively. The low-temperature heat capacity of 1-4 has been investigated in the temperature range of 1.9-300 K. Their heat capacity values are nearly equal below 10 K and display a crossover with the value order C p,m(2) > C p,m(1) ≈ C p,m(4) > C p,m(3) above 10 K. The measured heat capacities have been fitted, and the corresponding thermodynamic functions were consequently calculated based on the fitting parameters. The standard molar entropies at 298.15 K have been determined to be (415.71 ± 4.16), (451.32 ± 4.51), (308.53 ± 3.09), and (407.62 ± 4.08) J·mol-1·K-1 for 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

Abstract
Dual-emissive carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated for dual-channel ratiometric fluorometric determination of pH and mercury ion (Hg2+) and intracellular imaging. Dual-emissive CDs were synthesized by one-pot solvothermal treatment of cabbage. The CDs exhibited two distinctive fluorescence emissions at 500 and 678 nm under single excitation at 410 nm. The green emission (500 nm) had reversible linear response to pH (7.0-12.0) due to deprotonation and protonation of surface functional groups and their non-covalent interactions. On the other hand, the red emission (678 nm) had efficient and selective fluorescence response to Hg2+ by formation of non-emission complex between CDs and Hg2+. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for Hg2+ were 6.25 and 20.63 nM, respectively. The CDs have been successfully applied for label-free ratiometric fluorometric determination of pH and Hg2+ in fish and human serum samples with good recoveries (92.0-108.3%). In addition, the CDs had excellent photostability, low cytotoxicity, and good biocompatibility for intracellular imaging. All in all, the system was multi-functional in determination, high in sensitivity, and excellent in selectivity, which demonstrated wide and promising applicability for biosensing and bioimaging in the future. Graphical abstract Schematic presentation of dual-emission carbon dots (CDs) synthesized by solvothermal treatment of cabbage for dual-channel determination of pH and Hg2+.

Abstract
Three novel Zn-based coordination polymers (CPs), [Zn(MIPA)]n (1), {[Zn(MIPA)(4,4′-bipy)0.5(H2O)]·1.5H2O}n (2), and {[Zn(MIPA)(bpe)]·H2O}n (3) (MIPA = 4-methoxyisophthalic acid, 4,4′-bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, bpe = (E)-1,2-di(pyridine-4-yl)ethane), were constructed by ligand 4-methoxyisophthalic acid under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a beaded 2D-layer architecture, while compound 2 presents a 2-fold interpenetrating structure with a uninodal three-connected hcb topology. Compound 3 has a 3-fold interpenetrated four-connected dmp topology. Photoluminescence investigations of compound 2 were explored in detail, by which ions were detected, and it was observed to have the highest quenching efficiency toward Al3+ and S2− ions. The possible fluorescence quenching mechanisms of 2 toward Al3+ and S2− ions were also explored. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first potential dual-responsive luminescent probe based on a Zn(II) coordination polymer for detecting Al3+ and S2− ions via a luminescence quenching effect in ethanol.

Abstract
Copper ion (Cu2+)-triggered carbon dots (CDs/Cu) with dual emissions were utilized to develop a ratiometric fluorescence sensor for ultrasensitive detection of inert thiophanate-methyl (TM). TM could be recognized by CDs/Cu through π-π stacking and could chelate Cu2+ of CDs/Cu through metal ion coordination, inducing synchronous fluoresent quenching of the dual emission of CDs/Cu based on the excited state intramolecular proton transfer and the ligand-to-metal charge transfer. The fluorescence ratio of CDs/Cu (F416/F481) linearly responded in a TM concentration of 0.10-20.00 μmol/L with an ultralow limit of detection of 2.90 × 10-6 μmol/L. A synchronous response of the ratiometric sensor enhanced the specificity toward TM and presented remarkable capability of anti-interference in complex matrices. The sensor exhibited satifactory accuracy and precision for practical applications with recoveries of 88.33-101.09% and relative standard deviations of 1.61-5.06%, demonstrating an ultrasensitive ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor for detecting pesticides residues in complex matrices.

Abstract
By utilizing a novel octacarboxylate-functionalized resorcin[4]arene as organic linkers, three lanthanide-coordination polymers, namely, [(CH3)2NH2][Ln2(HL)(H2O)7]·2H2O (Ln = Tb (1), Eu (2) and Gd (3), H8L = 2,8,14,20-tetra-pentyl-4,6,10,12,16,18,22,24-octa-carboxymethoxy-resorcin[4]arene) have been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Isostructural 1-3 display unique two dimensional sandwich-based layers built with Ln3+ cations and bowl-shaped HL7- anions. Remarkably, 1 and 2 produce intensive green and red emissions respectively and long lifetimes thanks to the antenna effect of HL7- anions. The energy level testing of 3 indicates that the newly designed ligand H8L has a very efficient intersystem crossing process. More importantly, luminescent investigations reveal that 1 and 2 can selectively detect N,N'-dimethylformamide and Fe3+ ions with turn-on-type and turn-off-type responses, respectively.
