10×-Enhanced Heterogeneous Nanocatalysis on a Nanoporous Gold Disk Array with High-Density Hot Spots

Enhanced Photothermal Steam Generation and Gold Using the Efficiency of Ultralight Gold Foam with Hierarchical Porosity

Controlling the optical properties of metal plasma nanomaterials through structure manipulation has attracted great attention for solar steam generation. However, realizing broadband solar absorption for high-efficiency vapor generation is still challenging. In this work, a free-standing ultralight gold film/foam with a hierarchical porous microstructure and high porosity is obtained through controllably etching a designed cold-rolled (NiCoFeCr)₉₉Au₁ high-entropy precursor alloy with a unique grain texture. During chemical dealloying, the high-entropy precursor went through anisotropic contraction, resulting in a larger surface area compared with that from the Cu₉₉Au₁ precursor although the volume shrinkage is similar (over 85%), which is beneficial for the photothermal conversion. The low Au content also results in a special hierarchical lamellar microstructure with both micropores and nanopores within each lamella, which significantly broadens the optical absorption range and makes the optical absorption of the porous film reach 71.1-94.6% between 250 and 2500 nm. In addition, the free-standing nanoporous gold film has excellent hydrophilicity, with the contact angle reaching zero within 2.2 s. Thus, the 28 h dealloyed nanoporous gold film (NPG-28) exhibits a rapid evaporation rate of seawater under 1 kW m^-2 light intensity, reaching 1.53 kg m^-2 h^-1, and the photothermal conversion efficiency reaches 96.28%. This work demonstrates the enhanced noble metal gold using efficiency and solar thermal conversion efficiency by controlled anisotropic shrinkage and forming a hierarchical porous foam.

Nanomaterials as Photocatalysts-Synthesis and Their Potential Applications

Increasing demand for energy and environmental degradation are the most serious problems facing the man. An interesting issue that can contribute to solving these problems is the use of photocatalysis. According to literature, solar energy in the presence of a photocatalyst can effectively (i) be converted into electricity/fuel, (ii) break down chemical and microbial pollutants, and (iii) help water purification. Therefore, the search for new, efficient, and stable photocatalysts with high application potential is a point of great interest. The photocatalysts must be characterized by the ability to absorb radiation from a wide spectral range of light, the appropriate position of the semiconductor energy bands in relation to the redox reaction potentials, and the long diffusion path of charge carriers, besides the thermodynamic, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical stabilities. Meeting these requirements by semiconductors is very difficult. Therefore, efforts are being made to increase the efficiency of photo processes by changing the electron structure, surface morphology, and crystal structure of semiconductors. This paper reviews the recent literature covering the synthesis and application of nanomaterials in photocatalysis.

Use of a nano-porous gold film electrode modified with chitosan / polypyrrole for electrochemical determination of metronidazole in the Presence of Acetaminophen

This study, it was aimed to provide a sensitive, easy and selective method for designing Nano-porous gold film electrode (NPGF) electrode for simultaneous measurement of metronidazole (MT) and acetaminophen (AC). For this purpose, the NPGF electrode surface was modified with chitosan (CS) and poly pyrrole (PPY) by electrochemical method, and then CS and PPY modified NPGF (PPY-CS-NPGF) electrode were used to measure these drugs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) are employed for the characterization of the attained PPY-CS-NPGF electrode. Using cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and chronoamperometry, the electrochemical behavior of MT was investigated with the modified electrode. By differential pulse voltammetry, linear ranges of concentration 0.005-100 μM with linear coefficients of 0.9898 and a detection limit of 0.0009 μM were obtained for MT. Finally, an electrochemical sensor was used to measure MT in a real sample, which yielded acceptable results. PPY-CS-NPGF electrodes have a wide linear range, high selectivity, sensitivity and stability and can be used successfully to determine these drugs.

Engineering Heterostructures of Layered Double Hydroxides and Metal Nanoparticles for Plasmon-Enhanced Catalysis

Artificially designed heterostructures formed by close conjunctions of plasmonic metal nanoparticles (PNPs) and non-plasmonic (2D) lamellar nanostructures are receiving extensive interest. The synergistic interactions of the nanounits induce the manifestation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in plasmonic metals in the specific environment of the 2D-light absorbing matrix, impacting their potential in plasmon enhanced catalysis. Specifically, layered double hydroxides (LDH) with the advantages of their unique 2D-layered structure, tuned optical absorption, ease of preparation, composition diversity, and high surface area, have emerged as very promising candidates for obtaining versatile and robust catalysts. In this review, we cover the available PNPs/LDH heterostructures, from the most used noble-metals plasmonic of Au and Ag to the novel non-noble-metals plasmonic of Cu and Ni, mainly focusing on their synthesis strategies toward establishing a synergistic response in the coupled nanounits and relevant applications in plasmonic catalysis. First, the structure–properties relationship in LDH, establishing the desirable features of the 2D-layered matrix facilitating photocatalysis, is shortly described. Then, we address the recent research interests toward fabrication strategies for PNPs/support heterostructures as plasmonic catalysts. Next, we highlight the synthesis strategies for available PNPs/LDH heterostructures, how these are entangled with characteristics that enable the manifestation of the plasmon-induced charge separation effect (PICS), co-catalytic effect, or nanoantenna effect in plasmonic catalysis with applications in energy related and environmental photocatalysis. Finally, some perspectives on the challenges and future directions of PNPs/LDHs heterostructures to improve their performance as plasmonic catalysts are discussed.

Exploring the synergy of radiative coupling and substrate undercut in arrayed gold nanodisks for economical, ultra-sensitive label-free biosensing

We report radiatively coupled arrayed gold nanodisks on invisible substrate (AGNIS) as a cost-effective, high-performance platform for nanoplasmonic biosensing. By substrate undercut, the electric field distribution around the nanodisks has been restored to as if the nanodisks were surrounded by a single medium, thereby provides analyte accessibility to otherwise buried enhanced electric field. The AGNIS substrate has been fabricated by wafer-scale nanosphere lithography without the need for costly lithography. The LSPR blue-shifting behavior synergistically contributed by radiative coupling and substrate undercut have been investigated for the first time, which culminates in a remarkable refractive index sensitivity increase from 207 nm/RIU to 578 nm/RIU. The synergy also improves surface sensitivity to monolayer neutravidin-biotin binding from 7.4 nm to 20.3 nm with the limit of detection (LOD) of neutravidin at 50 fM, which is among the best label-free results reported to date on this specific surface binding reaction. As a potential cancer diagnostic application, extracellular vesicles such as exosomes excreted by cancer and normal cells were measured with a LOD within 112-600 (exosomes/μL), which would be sufficient in many clinical applications. Using CD9, CD63, and CD81 antibodies, label-free profiling has shown increased expression of all three surface antigens in cancer-derived exosomes. This work demonstrates, for the first time, strong synergy of arrayed radiative coupling and substrate undercut can enable economical, ultrasensitive biosensing in the visible light spectrum where high-quality, low-cost silicon detectors are readily available for point-of-care applications.

Self-Constructed Multiple Plasmonic Hotspots on an Individual Fractal to Amplify Broadband Hot Electron Generation

Plasmonic nanoparticles are ideal candidates for hot-electron-assisted applications, but their narrow resonance region and limited hotspot number hindered the energy utilization of broadband solar energy. Inspired by tree branches, we designed and chemically synthesized silver fractals, which enable self-constructed hotspots and multiple plasmonic resonances, extending the broadband generation of hot electrons for better matching with the solar radiation spectrum. We directly revealed the plasmonic origin, the spatial distribution, and the decay dynamics of hot electrons on the single-particle level by using ab initio simulation, dark-field spectroscopy, pump-probe measurements, and electron energy loss spectroscopy. Our results show that fractals with acute tips and narrow gaps can support broadband resonances (400-1100 nm) and a large number of randomly distributed hotspots, which can provide unpolarized enhanced near field and promote hot electron generation. As a proof-of-concept, hot-electron-triggered dimerization of p-nitropthiophenol and hydrogen production are investigated under various irradiations, and the promoted hot electron generation on fractals was confirmed with significantly improved efficiency.

Synthesis of bimetallic core-shelled nanoparticles modified by 2-mercaptoethanol as SERS substrates for detecting ferbam and thiabendazole in apple puree

Modification of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates with thiol ligands is an emerging approach in enhancing the stability and sensitivity of metal substrates due to their good affinity with metals such as Au, Ag, and Cu. Thus, in the current study, 2-mercaptoethanol was used to modify the surface of silver-coated gold nanoparticles to develop a novel SERS substrate for the rapid assessment of fungicide residues in fruit samples. Results showed that the substrate could achieve the detection of ferbam and thiabendazole residues in apple puree with limits of detection of approximately 0.0042 and 0.0064 ppm, high coefficients of determination of 0.9946 and 0.9968, good recoveries ranging from 80 to 105 and 81 to 107% and relative standard deviations of 3.5-7.5 and 3.8-7.9 %, respectively. Therefore, the substrate developed could potentially be utilised to assess other toxic agrochemicals in future.

A multimer-based SERS aptasensor for highly sensitive and homogeneous assay of carcinoembryonic antigens

Carcinoembryonic antigens (CEAs) are known as one of the most common tumor markers. Their facile and affordable detection is critical for early diagnosis of malignant tumors, especially in resource-constrained settings. Here, we report a novel multimer-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) aptasensor for a specific CEA assay. The aptasensor is fabricated through aptamer-assisted self-assembly of silver-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs), and the self-assembled multimeric structure possesses abundant hot-spots to provide high SERS response. When CEA is introduced, the specific recognition of CEA by aptamers will lead to the disassembly of Au@Ag multimers due to the lack of a bridging aptamer between Au@Ag NPs. As a result, the number of hot-spots in the multimeric system is decreased, and the intensity at 1585 cm-1 of the SERS reporter (4-mercaptobenzoic acid, 4-MBA) on the surface of NPs will also be decreased. The Raman intensity is proportional to the logarithm of the concentration of CEA. The detection sensitivity can be down to the pg mL-1 level. The analytical method only needs a droplet of 2 μL of sample, and the detection time is less than 20 min. The multimer-based SERS aptasensor can be applied in sensitive and inexpensive detection of CEA in serum samples.

Nanoporous Metals: From Plasmonic Properties to Applications in Enhanced Spectroscopy and Photocatalysis

The field of plasmonics is capable of enabling interesting applications in different wavelength ranges, spanning from the ultraviolet up to the infrared. The choice of plasmonic material and how the material is nanostructured has significant implications for ultimate performance of any plasmonic device. Artificially designed nanoporous metals (NPMs) have interesting material properties including large specific surface area, distinctive optical properties, high electrical conductivity, and reduced stiffness, implying their potentials for many applications. This paper reviews the wide range of available nanoporous metals (such as Au, Ag, Cu, Al, Mg, and Pt), mainly focusing on their properties as plasmonic materials. While extensive reports on the use and characterization of NPMs exist, a detailed discussion on their connection with surface plasmons and enhanced spectroscopies as well as photocatalysis is missing. Here, we report on different metals investigated, from the most used nanoporous gold to mixed metal compounds, and discuss each of these plasmonic materials' suitability for a range of structural design and applications. Finally, we discuss the potentials and limitations of the traditional and alternative plasmonic materials for applications in enhanced spectroscopy and photocatalysis.

Direct and Broadband Plasmonic Charge Transfer to Enhance Water Oxidation on a Gold Electrode

Plasmonic photocatalysis via hot charge carriers suffers from their short lifetime compared with the sluggish kinetics of most reactions. To increase lifetime, adsorbates on the surface of a plasmonic metal may create preferential states for electrons to be excited from. We demonstrate this effect with O adsorbates on a nanoporous gold electrode. Nanoporous gold is used to obtain a broadband optical response, to increase the obtained photocurrent, and to provide a SERS-active substrate. Only with adsorbates present, we observe significant photocurrents. Illumination also increases the adsorbate coverage above its dark potential-dependent equilibrium, as derived from a two-laser in situ SERS approach. Density functional theory calculations confirm the appearance of excitable states below the Fermi level. The photocurrent enhancement and broadband characteristics reveal the potential of the plasmonic approach to improve the efficiency of photoelectrochemical water splitting.

Toward the Limitation of Dealloying: Full Spectrum Responsive Ultralow Density Nanoporous Gold for Plasmonic Photocatalytic SERS

Plasmon-mediated chemical reaction has a great potential to create self-cleaning surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. However, few works have been reported to promote this goal. Here, we report ultralow density nanoporous gold (ULDNPG) that possesses an impressive full spectrum responsive characteristic with a reflectivity lower than 5% in the waveband of 300-900 nm. ULDNPG was fabricated by a sandwich dealloying strategy from ultradilute Au-Ag solid solutions with the Au content as low as 1-5 at.%. The prepared ULDNPG presents excellent SERS properties, including high sensitivity, high uniformity, and reproducibility. The full spectrum responsive characteristic of ULDNPG leads to an obvious plasmonic photocatalytic activity. The short lifetime of the SP-excited hot carriers causes a restricted self-cleaning SERS property and a strong photothermal effect for ULDNPG structures.

Directed Concentrating of Micro-/Nanoparticles via Near-Infrared Laser Generated Plasmonic Microbubbles

Directed concentrating of micro- and nanoparticles via laser-generated plasmonic microbubbles in a liquid environment is an emerging technology. For effective heating, visible light has been primarily employed in existing demonstrations. In this paper, we demonstrate a new plasmonic platform based on nanoporous gold disk (NPGD) array. Thanks to the highly tunable localized surface plasmon resonance of the NPGD array, microbubbles of controlled size can be generated by near-infrared (NIR) light. Using NIR light provides several key advantages over visible light in less interference with standard microscopy and fluorescence imaging, preventing fluorescence photobleaching, less susceptible to absorption and scattering in turbid biological media, and much reduced photochemistry, phototoxicity, and so forth. The large surface-to-volume ratio of NPGD further facilitates the heat transfer from these gold nanoheaters to the surroundings. While the microbubble is formed, the surrounding liquid circulates and direct microparticles randomly dispersed in the liquid to the bottom NPGD surface, which can be made to yield a unique collection of 3D hollow dome microstructures with bubbles larger than 5 μm. Such capability can also be employed in concentrating suspended colloidal nanoparticles at desirable sites and with the preferred configuration enhancing the sensor performance. Specifically, the interaction among concentrated nanoparticles and their interactions with the underlying substrate have been investigated for the first time. These collections have been characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, hyperspectral localized surface plasmon resonance imaging, and hyperspectral Raman imaging. In addition to various micro- and nanoparticles, the plasmonic microbubbles are also shown to collect biological cells and extracellular nanovesicles such as exosomes. By using a spatial light modulator to project the laser in arbitrary patterns, parallel concentrating can be achieved to fabricate an array of clusters.

A novel nucleic acid amplification system based on nano-gap embedded active disk resonators

Recent advances in nucleic acid based testing using bio-optical sensor approaches have been introduced but most are based on hybridization between the optical sensor and the bio-molecule and not on an amplification mechanism. Direct nucleic acid amplification on an optical sensor has several technical limitations, such as the sensitivity of the temperature sensor, instrument complexity, and high background signal. We here describe a novel nucleic acid amplification method based on a whispering gallery mode active resonator and discuss its potential molecular diagnostic application. By implanting nanoclusters as active compounds, this active resonator operates without tapered fiber coupling and emits a strong photoluminescence signal with low background in the wavelength of low absorption in an aqueous environment that is typical of biosensors. Our method also offers an extremely low detection threshold down to a single copy within 10 min due to the strong light-matter interaction in a nano-gap structure. We envision that this active resonator provides a high refractive index contrast for tight mode confinement with simple alignment as well as the possibility of reducing the device size so that a point-of-care system with low-cost, high-sensitivity and simplicity.

A MoS2@Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrid-based electrochemical aptasensor (MEA) for sensitive and rapid detection of Thyroxine

In the present study, a MoS₂@Ti₃C₂T_x MXene hybrid-based electrochemical aptasensor (MEA) was introduced for sensitive and rapid quantification of Thyroxine (T4). T4 is a crucial hormone and plays a key role in various body functions. Therefore, there is high demand for an accurate, sensitive, and rapid method for the detection of T4. To construct the aptasensor, a nano-hybrid (NH) consisting of Ti₃C₂T_x MXene and MoS₂ nanosheets (NS) was synthesized, and applied to a carbon electrode surface, followed by the electroplating of gold nanostructures (GN). The smart combination of Ti₃C₂T_x MXene and MoS₂NS enhanced the physiochemical properties of the electrode surface, as well as provided a building block to form 3D GN. The 3D architecture of the GN offered a unique substrate to capture numerous T4 aptamer molecules, which consequently amplified the signal by nearly 6-fold. The MEA quantified thyroxine with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.39 pg/mL over a dynamic range ((7.8 × 10^-1) to (7.8 × 10⁶)) pg/mL within 10 min. Moreover, the MEA successfully detected T4 in human serum samples. Lastly, the results obtained from the aptasensor were compared with those from the ELISA standard method. The comparative analysis showed good agreement between the two methods.

Commercial and emerging technologies for cancer diagnosis and prognosis based on circulating tumor exosomes

Exosomes are nano-sized extracellular vesicles excreted by mammalian cells that circulate freely in the bloodstream of living organisms. Exosomes have a lipid bilayer that encloses genetic material used in intracellular communication (e.g. double-stranded DNA, micro-RNAs, and messenger RNA). Recent evidence suggests that dysregulation of this genetic content within exosomes has a major role in tumor progression in the surrounding microenvironment. Motivated by this discovery, we focused here on using exosomal biomarkers as a diagnostic and prognostic tool for cancer. In this review, we discuss recently discovered exosome-derived proteomic and genetic biomarkers used in cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Although several genetic biomarkers have been validated for their diagnostic values, proteomic biomarkers are still being actively pursued. We discuss both commercial technologies and emerging technologies for exosome isolation and analysis. Emerging technologies can be classified into optical and non-optical methods. The working principle of each method is briefly discussed as well as advantages and limitations.

Plasmonic nanosponges filled with silicon for enhanced white light emission

Plasmonic nanosponges are a powerful platform for various nanophotonic applications owing to extremely high local field enhancement in metallic nanopores. The filling of the nanopores with high-refractive index semiconductors (e.g. Si, Ge, GaP, etc.) opens up opportunities for the enhancement of nonlinear effects in these materials. However, this task remains challenging due to the lack of knowledge on the integration process of metal and high-index semiconductor components in such nanoobjects. Here, we investigate metal-dielectric nanoparticles fabricated from bilayer Si/Au films by the laser printing technique via a combination of theoretical and experimental methods. We reveal that these hybrid nanoparticles represent the Au sponge-like nanostructure filled with Si nanocrystallites. We also demonstrate that the Au net provides strong near-field enhancement in the Si grains increasing the white light photoluminescence in the hybrid nanostructures compared to uniform Si nanoparticles. These results pave the way for engineering the internal structure of the sponge-like hybrid nanoparticles possessing white light luminescence and control of their optical properties on demand.
