Electrochemically Exfoliated Functionalized Black Phosphorene and Its Polyurethane Acrylate Nanocomposites: Synthesis and Applications

Mechanical reinforcement from two-dimensional nanofillers: model, bulk and hybrid polymer nanocomposites

Thanks to their intrinsic properties, multifunctionality and unique geometrical features, two-dimensional nanomaterials have been used widely as reinforcements in polymer nanocomposites. The effective mechanical reinforcement of polymers is, however, a multifaceted problem as it depends not only on the intrinsic properties of the fillers and the matrix, but also upon a number of other important parameters. These parameters include the processing method, the interfacial properties, the aspect ratio, defects, orientation, agglomeration and volume fraction of the fillers. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the mechanical reinforcement of polymer nanocomposites from two-dimensional nanofillers with an emphasis on the mechanisms of reinforcement. Model, bulk and hybrid polymer nanocomposites are reviewed comprehensively. The use of Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies is examined in light of the distinctive information they can yield upon stress transfer at interfaces. It is shown that the very diverse family of 2D nanofillers includes a number of materials that can attribute distrinctive features to a polymeric matrix, and we focus on the mechanical properties of both graphene and some of the most important 2D materials beyond graphene, including boron nitride, molybdenum disulphide, other transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes and black phosphorous. In the first part of the review we evaluate the mechanical properties of 2D nanoplatelets in "model" nanocomposites. Next we examine how the performance of these materials can be optimised in bulk nanocomposites. Finally, combinations of these 2D nanofillers with other 2D nanomaterials or with nanofillers of other dimensions are assessed thoroughly, as such combinations can lead to additive or even synergistic mechanical effects. Existing unsolved problems and future perspectives are discussed.

Research Progress on the Preparation Methods for and Flame Retardant Mechanism of Black Phosphorus and Black Phosphorus Nanosheets

Black phosphorus and black phosphorus nanosheets are widely used in the flame retardant field because of their excellent properties, but the immature preparation methods have resulted in extremely high preparation cost, which greatly limits their development and application. In this paper, various preparation methods of black phosphorus and black phosphorus nanosheets are described in detail, the advantages and disadvantages of each method are analyzed in depth, the flame-retardant mechanism and application of black phosphorus and black phosphorus nanosheets in flame retardants are discussed, and the subsequent development direction of black phosphorus and black phosphorus nanosheets is proposed.

Black phosphorus, an advanced versatile nanoparticles of antitumor, antibacterial and bone regeneration for OS therapy

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumor. In the clinic, usual strategies for OS treatment include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. However, all of these therapies have complications that cannot be ignored. Therefore, the search for better OS treatments is urgent. Black phosphorus (BP), a rising star of 2D inorganic nanoparticles, has shown excellent results in OS therapy due to its outstanding photothermal, photodynamic, biodegradable and biocompatible properties. This review aims to present current advances in the use of BP nanoparticles in OS therapy, including the synthesis of BP nanoparticles, properties of BP nanoparticles, types of BP nanoparticles, and modification strategies for BP nanoparticles. In addition, we have discussed comprehensively the application of BP in OS therapy, including single, dual, and multimodal synergistic OS therapies, as well as studies about bone regeneration and antibacterial properties. Finally, we have summarized the conclusions, limitations and perspectives of BP nanoparticles for OS therapy.

Facile Construction of Chestnut-Like Structural Fireproof PDMS/Mxene@BN for Advanced Thermal Management and Electromagnetic Shielding Applications

Composite polymer materials featured superior thermal conductivity, flame retardancy, and electromagnetic shielding performance are increasingly in demand due to the rapid development of highly miniaturized, portable, and flexible electronic devices. Herein, a facile and green ball milling shear method is utilized for generating MXene@Boron nitride (MXene@BN). The multi-functional fillers (MXene@BN) are constructed and incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare a multifunctional composite (PDMS/MXene@BN) for achieving improved electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance and thermal conductivity as well as flame retardancy simultaneously. When the PDMS/MXene@BN composite has a MXene@BN loading of 2.4 wt.%, it exhibits a high thermal conductivity of 0.59 W m-1K-1, which is 210% higher than that of the pure PDMS matrix. This is attributed to its unique chestnut-like double-layer structure. With a smoke production rate (SPR) of 0.04 m2 s-1 and total smoke production (TSP) of 3.51 m2, PDMS/MXene@BN 2.4 composite exhibits superb smoke suppression properties. These SPR and TSP values are 63.20% and 63.50% lower than the corresponding values of pure PDMS. Moreover, the EMI SE of the PDMS/MXene@BN 2.4 can reach 26.3 dB at 8.5 GHz. The work reported herein provides valuable insight into developing composites with multiple functions, which show strong potential for application in advanced packaging materials.

Electrochemical exfoliation of 2D materials beyond graphene

After the discovery of graphene in 2004, the field of atomically thin crystals has exploded with the discovery of thousands of 2-dimensional materials (2DMs) with unique electronic and optical properties, by making them very attractive for a broad range of applications, from electronics to energy storage and harvesting, and from sensing to biomedical applications. In order to integrate 2DMs into practical applications, it is crucial to develop mass scalable techniques providing crystals of high quality and in large yield. Electrochemical exfoliation is one of the most promising methods for producing 2DMs, as it enables quick and large-scale production of solution processable nanosheets with a thickness well below 10 layers and lateral size above 1 μm. Originally, this technique was developed for the production of graphene; however, in the last few years, this approach has been successfully extended to other 2DMs, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorous, hexagonal boron nitride, MXenes and many other emerging 2D materials. This review first provides an introduction to the fundamentals of electrochemical exfoliation and then it discusses the production of each class of 2DMs, by introducing their properties and giving examples of applications. Finally, a summary and perspective are given to address some of the challenges in this research area.

A 2D-0D-2D Sandwich Heterostructure toward High-Performance Room-Temperature Gas Sensing

The construction of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures over black phosphorus (BP) has been attracting significant attention to better utilize its inherent properties. The sandwich of zero-dimensional (0D) noble metals within BP-based vdW heterostructures can provide efficient catalytic channels, modulating their surface redox potentials and therefore inducing versatile functionalities. Herein, we realize a 2D WS2-Au-BP heterostructure, in which Au nanoparticles are connected between BP and WS2 via ionic bonds. The ultralow conduction band minimum position, the reduced adsorption energies of O2, and the increased dissociation barrier energy of O2- into 2O contribute greatly to improving the long-term stability of BP in the air. The formation of heterostructures can reduce the potential barrier energy in target gas molecules, thus enhancing the absorption energy and charge transfer. Taking the paramagnetic NO2 gas molecules as a representative, a stable response magnitude of 2.11 to 100 ppb NO2 is achieved for 80 days, which is far larger than the initial responses of most BP-based materials. A practical gas sensing system is also developed to demonstrate its real-world implementation. This work provides a promising demonstration of 0D noble metal within 2D BP-based vdW heterostructure for simultaneously improving the long-term stability and room-temperature reversible gas sensing.

Recent Advances in Black Phosphorous-Based Photocatalysts for Degradation of Emerging Contaminants

The recalcitrant nature of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments necessitates the development of effective strategies for their remediation, given the considerable impacts they pose on both human health and the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Semiconductor-based photocatalytic technology is recognized for its dual benefits in effectively addressing both ECs and energy-related challenges simultaneously. Among the plethora of photocatalysts, black phosphorus (BP) stands as a promising nonmetallic candidate, offering a host of advantages including its tunable direct band gap, broad-spectrum light absorption capabilities, and exceptional charge mobility. Nevertheless, pristine BP frequently underperforms, primarily due to issues related to its limited ambient stability and the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. To overcome these challenges, substantial research efforts have been devoted to the creation of BP-based photocatalysts in recent years. However, there is a noticeable absence of reviews regarding the advancement of BP-based materials for the degradation of ECs in aqueous solutions. Therefore, to fill this gap, a comprehensive review is undertaken. In this review, we first present an in-depth examination of the fabrication processes for bulk BP and BP nanosheets (BPNS). The review conducts a thorough analysis and comparison of the merits and limitations inherent in each method, thereby delineating the most auspicious avenues for future research. Then, in line with the pathways followed by photogenerated electron-hole pairs at the interface, BP-based photocatalysts are systematically categorized into heterojunctions (Type I, Type II, Z-scheme, and S-scheme) and hybrids, and their photocatalytic performances against various ECs and the corresponding degradation mechanisms are comprehensively summarized. Finally, this review presents personal insights into the prospective avenues for advancing the field of BP-based photocatalysts for ECs remediation.

A Spear and Shield-Inspired Ar Plasma Safeguard Few-Layer Black Phosphore with Firefighting of Epoxy Resin

Appearing as an innovative and efficient strategy, a facile strategy of a plasma ball mill is carried out to prepare few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs), for abating the fire risk of epoxy resin (EP). A spear and shield-inspired Ar plasma emergeed through a plasma ball mill to prevent Ar@BP nanosheets from oxidation compared with the preparation of BP nanosheets (MBPNSs) in a mechanical ball mill. The absorption coefficient in the synchrotron radiation spectrum is increased by 16.91%, indicating that BP is effectively protected by Ar proof. The Vienna ab initio simulation reveals that the combination of Ar@BP with oxygen cannot proceed spontaneously with the binding energy of 4.44 eV. With the introduction of 1.5 wt% Ar@BP, the total heat release (THR), total smoke release (TSR), total smoke production(TSP), CO, and CO2 yield, compared with that of EP, are descended by 30.40%, 24.41%, 24.10%, 33.23%, and 37.60%, respectively, indicating excellent flame retardancy property. It is attributed to the condensed and gas phase function. Meanwhile, the tensile strength and elongation at break increase by 27.92% and 56.04%, respectively, with the incorporation of 1.5 wt% Ar@BP.

A Superior Two-Dimensional Phosphorus Flame Retardant: Few-Layer Black Phosphorus

The usage of flame retardants in flammable polymers has been an effective way to protect both lives and material goods from accidental fires. Phosphorus flame retardants have the potential to be follow-on flame retardants after halogenated variants, because of their low toxicity, high efficiency and compatibility. Recently, the emerging allotrope of phosphorus, two-dimensional black phosphorus, as a flame retardant has been developed. To further understand its performance in flame-retardant efficiency among phosphorus flame retardants, in this work, we built model materials to compare the flame-retardant performances of few-layer black phosphorus, red phosphorus nanoparticles, and triphenyl phosphate as flame-retardant additives in cellulose and polyacrylonitrile. Aside from the superior flame retardancy in polyacrylonitrile, few-layer black phosphorus in cellulose showed the superior flame-retardant efficiency in self-extinguishing, ~1.8 and ~4.4 times that of red phosphorus nanoparticles and triphenyl phosphate with similar lateral size and mass load (2.5~4.8 wt%), respectively. The char layer in cellulose coated with the few-layer black phosphorus after combustion was more continuous and smoother than that with red phosphorus nanoparticles, triphenyl phosphate and blank, and the amount of residues of cellulose coated with the few-layer black phosphorus in thermogravimetric analysis were 10 wt%, 14 wt% and 14 wt% more than that with red phosphorus nanoparticles, triphenyl phosphate and blank, respectively. In addition, although exothermic reactions, the combustion enthalpy changes in the few-layer black phosphorus (-127.1 kJ mol^-1) are one third of that of red phosphorus nanoparticles (-381.3 kJ mol^-1). Based on a joint thermodynamic, spectroscopic, and microscopic analysis, the superior flame retardancy of the few-layer black phosphorus was attributed to superior combustion reaction suppression from the two-dimensional structure and thermal nature of the few-layer black phosphorus.

Flame Retardancy of Epoxy Resins Modified with Few-Layer Black Phosphorus

Few-layer black phosphorus (BP)- and red phosphorus (RP)-modified diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A-based epoxy resins (EP) was prepared with 4,4′-diaminodiphenylsulfone as a curing agent. The thermal stability and flame-retardant properties of the modified EPs were compared. Both BP and RP were able to improve the flame-retardant properties of EPs, while the BP showed higher flame-retardant efficiency than RP. As a two-dimensional nanomaterial, BP exhibited good compatibility, high flame-retardant efficiency, and negligible impact on the mechanical and thermal stability of EP. Pyrolysis-gas Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic analysis of EP showed that the addition of BP significantly inhibited the release of pyrolysis products in the gas phase. The modes of action for flame-retardant BPs in gas phase and condensed phase were proposed.

Progress in the preparation, application, and recycling of black phosphorus

Black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) are a new member of the nanomaterial family, and they have good development potential in electrochemistry, electronics, optoelectronics, environmental protection, biomedical, and other fields because of their bandgap width, high anisotropy, broad optical absorption, high carrier mobility and many other features. Although many articles have been published about the preparation and application of BPNSs, these aspects have not been elucidated, and we aimed to fill this knowledge gap in this review. First, we used VOSviewer software to sort out articles published in the past 5 years and drew a literature map, which allowed us to sort out the relationship between various studies related to BPNSs, and reflect on the research focus in recent years. Because BPNSs must be made from black phosphorus (BP), and BPNSs are a nano form of BP, the collation of the BP preparation scheme was also helpful for the related research on BPNSs. This paper introduces the preparation of bulk BP and BPNSs, analyzes and compares the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and points out the most promising methods in the future. Then, we propose improvement directions for this method. We also introduce the characterization of BPNSs and combine it with the subsequent photocatalytic application of BPNSs. As a new material, the effect of BPNSs on the environment is still unknown; thus, an end treatment scheme for BPNSs is summarized according to existing methods. Based on the experience of nanomaterial treatment, this paper proposes a research focus for the end treatment of BPNSs in the future, providing a reference scheme for the end treatment of other nanomaterials. Finally, we summarize the full text and propose recommended methods and improvement plans.

High-Performance TPE-S Modified by a Flame-Retardant System Based on Black Phosphorus Nanosheets

Few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets (BPs) combined with melamine cyanurate and poly(phenylene oxide) were used to prepare a flame-retardant thermoplastic elastomer based on polystyrene (TPE-S) for the first time. Compared with neat TPE-S, BP-modified TPE-S with a phosphorus content of 7.98% (TPE-S/BP-7.98) passed the UL-94 vertical burning V-0 rating, and the limiting oxygen index value increased to 24.0%. The peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release, and the average combustion effective heat of TPE-S/BP-7.98 were decreased by 61.8, 26.0, and 35.3%, respectively. The time to PHRR was increased from 90 s (neat TPE-S) to 170 s. Scanning electron microscopy of frozen fracture sections showed favorable compatibility and dispersibility of BPs in TPE-S. In addition, the introduction of BPs showed the most negligible effect on the mechanical properties of TPE-S compared with other flame retardants (aluminum hypophosphite and red phosphorus).

Hindered phenolic antioxidant passivation of black phosphorus affords air stability and free radical quenching

As an antioxidant, hindered phenol scavenges free radicals. Due to the oxidative degradation of black phosphorus (BP) in the presence of water and oxygen, free radical quenching of hindered phenol antioxidants can solve this issue and improve the environmental stability and flame retardant efficiency of BP. Herein, hydroxyl-modified BP (BP-OH) with active groups on the surface was obtained by hydroxylation, and then the hindered phenol antioxidant was grafted onto the surface of BP-OH through an isophorone diisocyanate bridging covalent reaction to obtain hindered phenol-modified BP (BP-HPL). The fire hazard of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) can be significantly reduced by introducing BP-HPL into TPU. Adding 2 wt% BP-HPL can reduce the heat release rate and total heat release values of TPU by 49.9% and 49.0%, respectively. In addition, the reductions in smoke volume and carbon monoxide production were also significant. Compared with BP-OH, the environmental stability of BP-HPL is significantly improved. This work provides a reference for the application of BP in the field of fire safety and simultaneously achieves the improvement of the environmental stability and flame retardant performance of BP.

A multifunctional 2D black phosphorene-based platform for improved photovoltaics

As one of the latest additions to the 2D nanomaterials family, black phosphorene (BP, monolayer or few-layer black phosphorus) has gained much attention in various forms of solar cells. This is due largely to its intriguing semiconducting properties such as tunable direct bandgap (from 0.3 eV in the bulk to 2.0 eV in the monolayer), extremely high ambipolar carrier mobility, broad visible to infrared light absorption, etc. These appealing optoelectronic attributes make BP a multifunctional nanomaterial for use in solar cells via tailoring carrier dynamics, band energy alignment, and light harvesting, thereby promoting the rapid development of third-generation solar cells. Notably, in sharp contrast to the copious work on revealing the fundamental properties of BP, investigation into the utility of BP is comparatively less, particularly in the area of photovoltaics. Herein, we first identify and summarize an array of unique characteristics of BP that underpin its application in photovoltaics, aiming at providing inspiration to develop new designs and device architectures of photovoltaics. Subsequently, state-of-the-art synthetic routes (i.e., top-down and bottom-up) to scalable BP production that facilitates its applications in optoelectronic materials and devices are outlined. Afterward, recent advances in a diverse set of BP-incorporated solar cells, where BP may impart electron and/or hole extraction and transport, function as a light absorber, provide dielectric screening for enhancing exciton dissociation, and modify the morphology of photoabsorbers, are discussed, including organic solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cells, heterojunction solar cells and perovskite solar cells. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly evolving field are presented.

Black Phosphorus/Polymers: Status and Challenges

As a newly emerged mono-elemental nanomaterial, black phosphorus (BP) has been widely investigated for its fascinating physical properties, including layer-dependent tunable band gap (0.3-1.5 eV), high ON/OFF ratio (10⁴ ), high carrier mobility (10³ cm² V^-1 s^-1 ), excellent mechanical resistance, as well as special in-plane anisotropic optical, thermal, and vibrational characteristics. However, the instability caused by chemical degradation of its surface has posed a severe challenge for its further applications. A focused BP/polymer strategy has more recently been developed and implemented to hurdle this issue, so at present BP/polymers have been developed that exhibit enhanced stability, as well as outstanding optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. This has promoted researchers to further explore the potential applications of black phosphorous. In this review, the preparation processes and the key properties of BP/polymers are reviewed, followed by a detailed account of their diversified applications, including areas like optoelectronics, bio-medicine, and energy storage. Finally, in accordance with the current progress, the prospective challenges and future directions are highlighted and discussed.

Dispersion of Few-Layer Black Phosphorus in Binary Polymer Blend and Block Copolymer Matrices

Exfoliated black phosphorus (bP) embedded into a polymer is preserved from oxidation, is stable to air, light, and humidity, and can be further processed into devices without degrading its properties. Most of the examples of exfoliated bP/polymer composites involve a single polymer matrix. Herein, we report the preparation of biphasic polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (50/50 wt.%) composites containing few-layer black phosphorus (fl-bP) (0.6–1 wt.%) produced by sonicated-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation. Micro-Raman spectroscopy confirmed the integrity of fl-bP, while scanning electron microscopy evidenced the influence of fl-bP into the coalescence of polymeric phases. Furthermore, the topography of thin films analyzed by atomic force microscopy confirmed the effect of fl-bP into the PS dewetting, and the selective PS etching of thin films revealed the presence of fl-bP flakes. Finally, a block copolymer/fl-bP composite (1.2 wt.%) was prepared via in situ reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization by sonication-assisted exfoliation of bP into styrene. For this sample, ³¹P solid-state NMR and Raman spectroscopy confirmed an excellent preservation of bP structure.

Progress in the therapeutic applications of polymer-decorated black phosphorus and black phosphorus analog nanomaterials in biomedicine

Wonderful black phosphorus (BP) and some BP analogs (BPAs) have been increasingly studied for their biomedical applications owing to their fascinating properties and biodegradability, but opportunities and challenges have always coexisted in their study. Poor stability upon exposure to the natural environment is the major obstacle hampering their in vivo applications. BP/polymer and BPAs/polymer nanocomposites can not only efficiently prevent their oxidation and aggregation but also exhibit "biological activity" due to synergistic effects. In this review, we briefly describe the synthesis methods and stability strategies of BP/polymer and BPAs/polymer. Then, advances pertaining to their exciting therapeutic applications in various fields are systematically introduced, such as cancer therapy (phototherapy, drug delivery, and synergistic immunotherapy), bone regeneration, and neurogenesis. Some challenges for future clinical trials and possible directions for further study are finally discussed.

Construction of few-layered black phosphorus/graphite-like carbon nitride binary hybrid nanostructure for reducing the fire hazards of epoxy resin

Black phosphorus (BP) and graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) were combined to prepare BP-CN hybrid nanostructure through a simple self-assembly method assisted by ultra-sonication, and as-obtained materials were further used as fire retardants introduced into epoxy resin to fabricate EP/BP-CNx nanocomposites. It was found that the introduction of 2 wt% BP-CNx into EP contributed to considerable decrements in peak heat release rate (up to 47.72%) and total heat release (utmost to 49.60%) of composites, and LOI value increased from 25% to 31%. SSTF results revealed that the introducing of BP-CN can distinctly reduce the production of smoke. TG-IR results demonstrated that the addition of BP-CN0.5 and BP-CN2.0 into EP matrix exert different influences on the decomposition of resin. Analyses of residual chars further validated through adjusting the proportion of BP and CN can achieve different fire performances of matrix. This work illustrates that BP can reduce the fire hazards of EP, and the hybridization of CN can achieve better flame retarded efficiency, which provides a new strategy for black phosphorus to be used as a flame retardant.

Barrier function of graphene for suppressing the smoke toxicity of polymer/black phosphorous nanocomposites with mechanism change

Recently, black phosphorous (BP) nanosheets as an emerging nanomaterial have presented significant fire safety improvement in polymer nanocomposites. However, as elemental phosphorus, fire safety improvement effect of BP nanosheets on polymer composites builds on the conversion of gaseous pyrolysis products into smoke particles, which inevitably promotes the formation and release of smoke particles. From the perspective of overall fire safety improvement, it is vital to simultaneously suppress the heat release and smoke production of polymer/BP composites. Herein, melamine-mediated graphene/black phosphorous nanohybrids (GNS/MA/BP) were fabricated through electrostatic-driving self-assembly process and introduced into polyether thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). During combustion, the barrier function provided by thermally stable layered structure of graphene (GNS) enables more pyrolysis products of BP nanosheets to be kept within condensed phase and react with polymer matrix. Compared to pure TPU, the incorporated hierarchical nanostructure (GNS/MA/BP-2) decreases PHRR, THR, and total CO₂ release of TPU composite by 54.7%, 23.5%, and 32.5%, respectively. Beside, in contrast to TPU-BP composite, the release rate of toxic smoke and CO gas of TPU-GNS/MA/BP-2 composite are reduced by 46.7% and 49.4%. With barrier function of graphene, the heat and smoke release behavior of polymer/BP nanocomposites is effectively suppressed.

Electrochemical Delamination of Ultralarge Few-Layer Black Phosphorus with a Hydrogen-Free Intercalation Mechanism

Due to strong interlayer interaction and ease of oxidation issues of black phosphorus (BP), the domain size of artificial synthesized few-layer black phosphorus (FL-BP) crystals is often below 10 µm, which extremely limits its further applications in large-area thin-film devices and integrated circuits. Herein, a hydrogen-free electrochemical delamination strategy through weak Lewis acid intercalation enabled exfoliation is developed to produce ultralarge FL-BP single-crystalline domains with high quality. The interaction between the weak Lewis acid tetra-n-butylammonium acetate (CH₃ COOTBA) and P atoms promotes the average domain size of FL-BP crystal up to 77.6 ± 15.0 µm and the largest domain size is found to be as large as 119 µm. The presence of H⁺ and H₂ O is found to sharply decrease the size of as-exfoliated FL-BP flakes. The electronic transport measurements show that the delaminated FL-BP crystals exhibit a high hole mobility of 76 cm² V^-1 s^-1 and an on/off ratio of 10³ at 298 K. A broadband photoresponse from 532 to 1850 nm with ultrahigh responsivity is achieved. This work provides a scalable, simple, and low-cost approach for large-area BP films that meet industrial requirements for nanodevices applications.

Construction of graphite oxide modified black phosphorus through covalent linkage: An efficient strategy for smoke toxicity and fire hazard suppression of epoxy resin

The black phosphorus (BP) can be compounded with other two-dimensional materials with flame retardant effect to achieve better synergistic effect. Herein, the multifunctional BP-RGO nanohybrids was fabricated by solvothermal strategy to improve the dispersion state of BP in epoxy resin (EP) and enhance its fire safety performance, where the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was attached on the surface of BP via PC and POC bonds. With the incorporation of 2.0 wt% BP-RGO into EP matrix, 54.4 % reduction in total heat release (THR) was achieved along with 55.2 % decrease in peak heat release rate (PHRR) compared with neat EP. As a similar trend, the toxic CO and aromatic compounds were significantly inhibited, and the maximum decrease (28.5 %) in total smoke production (TSP) was achieved, indicating the enhanced fire safety performance of EP nanocomposites. These positive results is attributed to the synergistic effect of physical nano-barrier, free radicals trapping and char formation between BP and RGO components. Meanwhile, the EP/BP-RGO2.0 nanocomposites exhibited satisfying air stability even after being immersed in water for a month. This work enriches the strategies for enhancing the air stability of BP, and confirms its potential for smoke toxicity and fire hazard suppression in polymer nanocomposites.

Single-Step Synthesis of Platinoid-Decorated Phosphorene: Perspectives for Catalysis, Gas Sensing, and Energy Storage

The originality of phosphorene is suppressed by its structural defects, irreproducibility, and sensitivity to the ambient environment. To preserve phosphorene's essential characteristics, for example, influencing the charge redistribution and generating the formation of active centers, noble-metal decoration is found to be an efficient approach. Herein, we demonstrate a single-step electrochemical synthesis of platinoid-decorated few-layer phosphorene (FP). The material's structure and effects of metal (Ru, Rh, and Pd) deposition on the FP nanosheets were first explored by numerous analytical techniques and theoretical calculations. Platinoid-decorated FPs demonstrate high quality and consist of one to five layers modified with round- and heptagon-shaped metal nanoparticles with the most intense distribution of Pd. The high-rate Rh deposition provides the enhanced electrocatalytic efficiency for hydrogen evolution (79 mV·dec^-1-Tafel slope) and almost 20 times increased capacity for the Li-ion batteries in comparison to bare and Ru-decorated FP. The chemosensing of platinoid-decorated FP indicates a response to methanol plus ethanol and shows inertness to acetone. The incorporation of Ru and Rh nanoparticles increases FP's selectivity toward methanol. This research provides a new approach for the in situ FP functionalization during top-down synthesis and thus broadens the material's feasibility for advanced nanotechnology.

Emerging Chemical Functionalization of g-C3N4: Covalent/Noncovalent Modifications and Applications

Atomically 2D thin-layered structures, such as graphene nanosheets, graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C₃N₄), hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides are emerging as fascinating materials for a good array of domains owing to their rare physicochemical characteristics. In particular, graphitic carbon nitride has turned into a hot subject in the scientific community due to numerous qualities such as simple preparation, electrochemical properties, high adsorption capacity, good photochemical properties, thermal stability, and acid-alkali chemical resistance, etc. Basically, g-C₃N₄ is considered as a polymeric material consisting of N and C atoms forming a tri-s-triazine network connected by planar amino groups. In comparison with most C-based materials, g-C₃N₄ possesses electron-rich characteristics, basic moieties, and hydrogen-bonding groups owing to the presence of hydrogen and nitrogen atoms; therefore, it is taken into account as an interesting nominee to further complement carbon in applications of functional materials. Nevertheless, g-C₃N₄ has some intrinsic limitations and drawbacks mainly related to a relatively poor specific surface area, rapid charge recombination, a limited light absorption range, and a poor dispersibility in both aqueous and organic mediums. To overcome these shortcomings, numerous chemical modification approaches have been conducted with the aim of expanding the range of application of g-C₃N₄ and enhancing its properties. In the current review, the comprehensive survey is conducted on g-C₃N₄ chemical functionalization strategies including covalent and noncovalent approaches. Covalent approaches consist of establishing covalent linkage between the g-C₃N₄ structure and the chemical modifier such as oxidation/carboxylation, amidation, polymer grafting, etc., whereas the noncovalent approaches mainly consist of physical bonding and intermolecular interaction such as van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, and so on. Furthermore, the preparation, characterization, and diverse applications of functionalized g-C₃N₄ in various domains are described and recapped. We believe that this work will inspire scientists and readers to conduct research with the aim of exploring other functionalization strategies for this material in numerous applications.

Fully bio-based coating from chitosan and phytate for fire-safety and antibacterial cotton fabrics

In this study, a fully bio-based coating was constructed by layer-by-layer deposition of chitosan (CS) and ammonium phytate (AP), to obtain fire-safety and antibacterial cotton fabrics. With about 8% weight gains of CS/AP coatings, the treated cotton fabrics self-extinguished in the vertical burning test. The data obtained from cone calorimetry showed CS/AP/cotton had much lower smoke and heat production, which indicated the fire safety of the fabrics was significantly improved for the presence of CS/AP coatings. The flame-retardant mechanism of this system was finally proposed according to the analysis of gaseous products and char residues. What is more, CS/AP coatings had higher antibacterial activity in Gram-negative bacteria and did improve the tensile strength of cotton fabrics compared with AP coating. With its ease of operation and use of non-toxic chemicals, this fully bio-based coating can further offer a feasible flame-retardant and antibacterial solution of the inflammable natural fabrics.

Combination of black phosphorus nanosheets and MCNTs via phosphoruscarbon bonds for reducing the flammability of air stable epoxy resin nanocomposites

As a rising star of two-dimensional material, black phosphorus (BP) has attracted tremendous attention in applications of photovoltaics, transistors and batteries due to its unique characteristics. Inspiring, we developed a simple strategy to fabricate BP-MCNTs as highly promising inorganic phosphorus-based flame retardant. After incorporation 2 wt% BP-MCNTs11(the mass ratio of BP:MCNTs=1:1) nanohybrid, the peak of heat release rate and total heat release of EP nanocomposites reduced by 55.81% and 41.17% at a phosphorus content of only 1 wt%, and the comprehensive index FGI for evaluating the flame retardant of materials decreased from 17.35 to 6.97. In addition, the typical flammable volatile are suppressed significantly, and the first stage of carbon monoxide release is disappeared. The improvement of fire safety and inhibition of smoke toxicity could be attributed to the the synergistic effects of nano-barrier, catalytic charring and radicals trapping of BP-MCNTs nanohybrid. More importantly, BP hybrid with MCNTs and wrapped in EP matrix which formed effective isolation protection against the ambient degradation. Raman spectra and SEM results confirmed that EP/BP-MCNTs performed enhanced ambient stability than EP/BP-BS nanocomposites after three months. This study demonstrates its great potential for preparation of air-stable BP based nanocomposites with enhanced fire safety.

Montmorillonite-Synergized Water-Based Intumescent Flame Retardant Coating for Plywood

In this study, montmorillonite (MMT) was used as an inorganic synergist to prepare the water-based intumescent flame retardant (IFR) ornamental coating for plywood. Results indicate that the 7 wt.% MMT modified IFR coating (No. 3) possess the best fire resistance (longer than 20 min) of the tested samples according to the fire performance, which significantly declines the specific extinction area by 44.12 m2·kg−1 compared to the coating without MMT by cone calorimeter. In addition, characterizations such as XPS, XRD, TG, SEM and FTIR were characterized to investigate the surface and bulk properties as well as the morphology of MMT synergized water-based IFR coating. It is revealed that the residual nitrogenous polyaromatic structure and 25.5% residual mass in the No. 3 coating are a result of the effect of MMT on the antioxidation properties of the char layer.

Recent Advances in Chemical Functionalization of 2D Black Phosphorous Nanosheets

Owing to their tunable direct bandgap, high charge carrier mobility, and unique in-plane anisotropic structure, black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) have emerged as one of the most important candidates among the 2D materials beyond graphene. However, the poor ambient stability of black phosphorus limits its practical application, due to the chemical degradation of phosphorus atoms to phosphorus oxides in the presence of oxygen and/or water. Chemical functionalization is demonstrated as an efficient approach to enhance the ambient stability of BPNSs. Herein, various covalent strategies including radical addition, nitrene addition, nucleophilic substitution, and metal coordination are summarized. In addition, efficient noncovalent functionalization methods such as van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, and cation-π interactions are described in detail. Furthermore, the preparations, characterization, and diverse applications of functionalized BPNSs in various fields are recapped. The challenges faced and future directions for the chemical functionalization of BPNSs are also highlighted.
