Abstract
Successively emerged high-throughput multitarget molecular detection methods bring significant development tides in chemical, biological, and environmental fields. However, several persistent challenges of intricate sample preparation, expensive instruments, and tedious and skilled operations still need to be further addressed. Here, we propose an automatic light-addressable photoelectrochemical (ALA-PEC) sensing platform for sensitive and selective detection of multitarget molecules. With Au nanoparticle-decorated TiO2 nanotube photonic crystals (Au-TiO2 NTPCs) as a photoelectrode and 8 kinds of antibiotics as target molecules, the ALA-PEC sensing system implements automatic detection of multimolecules in a short time with high sensitivity and good selectivity. Random samples with different amounts of antibiotics have been well-distinguished in the ALA-PEC system, and both the chemical components and concentrations have been well-illustrated in a pattern recognition model. It is worth noting that 8 samples are not the limit of the ALA-PEC sensing platform, which can be easily expanded to more complex detection arrays based on practical needs. The emerging ALA-PEC sensing platform provides a new solution for rapid screening and detection of multitarget and high-throughput substances and potentially brings the automatic, portable, sensitive, high-throughput, and cost-effective detection technique to an entire new realm.

Abstract
When constructing efficient, cost-effective, and stable photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems, the solar-driven photo-to-chemical conversion efficiency of semiconductors is limited by several factors, including the surface catalytic activity, light absorption range, carrier separation, and transfer efficiency. Accordingly, various modulation strategies, such as modifying the light propagation behavior and regulating the absorption range of incident light based on optics and constructing and regulating the built-in electric field of semiconductors based on carrier behaviors in semiconductors, are implemented to improve the PEC performance. Herein, the mechanism and research advancements of optical and electrical modulation strategies for photoelectrodes are reviewed. First, parameters and methods for characterizing the performance and mechanism of photoelectrodes are introduced to reveal the principle and significance of modulation strategies. Then, plasmon and photonic crystal structures and mechanisms are summarized from the perspective of controlling the propagation behavior of incident light. Subsequently, the design of an electrical polarization material, polar surface, and heterojunction structure is elaborated to construct an internal electric field, which serves as the driving force to facilitate the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for developing optical and electrical modulation strategies for photoelectrodes are discussed.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive bacterium that can easily cause outbreaks of food-borne diseases. In this work, a signal-enhanced three-dimensional paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptsensor for the rapid and sensitive determination of S. aureus was developed. Specifically, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were electrodeposited on a paper-based working electrode to provide binding sites for a sulfhydryl-functionalized aptamer. Subsequently, S. aureus was captured with high specificity by a carboxyl-functionalized aptamer modified with amino-functionalized AgBiS2 nanoflowers (NH2-AgBiS2 NFs), which functionalized as PEC probes that generated strong photocurrent under irradiation with 980-nm light. By exploiting the "aptamer-target-aptamer" PEC sensing platform, the rapid and ultrasensitive detection of S. aureus was achieved. The sensor had a wide linear range of 20 to 2 × 107 CFU/mL and low limit of detection of 4 CFU/mL. Further, the applicability of the as-prepared aptsensor was successfully certified for the analysis of pork samples artificially contaminated with S. aureus.

Abstract
The effectiveness of silicon (Si) and silicon-based materials in catalyzing photoelectrochemistry (PEC) CO2 reduction is limited by poor visible light absorption. In this study, we prepared two-dimensional (2D) silicon-based photonic crystals (SiPCs) with circular dielectric pillars arranged in a square array to amplify the absorption of light within the wavelength of approximately 450 nm. By investigating five sets of n + p SiPCs with varying dielectric pillar sizes and periodicity while maintaining consistent filling ratios, our findings showed improved photocurrent densities and a notable shift in product selectivity towards CH4 (around 25% Faradaic Efficiency). Additionally, we integrated platinum nanoparticles, which further enhanced the photocurrent without impacting the enhanced light absorption effect of SiPCs. These results not only validate the crucial role of SiPCs in enhancing light absorption and improving PEC performance but also suggest a promising approach towards efficient and selective PEC CO2 reduction.

Abstract
In light of potential risks of heavy metal exposure, diverse aptasensors have been developed through the combination of aptamers with nanomaterials for the timely and efficient detection of metals in environmental and biological matrices. Aptamer-based sensors can benefit from multiple merits such as heightened sensitivity, facile production, uncomplicated operation, exceptional specificity, enhanced stability, low immunogenicity, and cost-effectiveness. This review highlights the detection capabilities of nanomaterial-based aptasensors for heavy-metal and metalloid ions based on their performance in terms of the basic quality assurance parameters (e.g., limit of detection, linear dynamic range, and response time). Out of covered studies, dendrimer/CdTe@CdS QDs-based ECL aptasensor was found as the most sensitive option with an LOD of 2.0 aM (atto-molar: 10-18 M) detection for Hg2+. The existing challenges in the nanomaterial-based aptasensors and their scientific solutions are also discussed.

Abstract
Effective and convenient detection of melanoma cells with high sensitivity is essential to identify malignant melanoma in its early stage. However, the existing detection methods, such as immunohistochemical analysis, are too complicated and time-consuming to realize the convenient in vivo and in situ detection. Herein, a near infrared responsive photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor is proposed with plasmonic Au nanoparticles-photonic TiO2 nanocaves (Au/TiO2 NCs) as photon harvest and conversion transducer and antibody as cell recognition unit. The micro-antibody/Au/TiO2 NCs photoelectrode can easily in vivo distinguish melanoma cells and can realize sensitive detection of melanoma cells in short time of 1 min with a lowest limit of detection of 2 cell mL-1. The PEC immunosensor strategy not only allows us to pioneeringly implement sensitive in vivo bio-detection, but also opens up a new avenue for rational design of cell recognition units and micro-electrode for universal and reliable bio-detections.

Abstract
Sensitive, portable methods of detection for foodborne pathogens hold great significance for the early warning and prevention of foodborne diseases and environmental pollution. Restricted by a complicated matrix and limited signaling strategies, developing a ready-to-use sensing platform with ultrahigh sensitivity remains challenging. In this work, near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive AgBiS2 nanoflowers (NFs) and Cu2O nanocubes (NCs) were introduced to construct a novel target-induced photocurrent-polarity-switchable system and verified for the development of an all-in-one, ready-to-use photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor. NIR-responsive n-type AgBiS2 NFs and p-type Cu2O NCs producing anodic and cathodic photocurrents were conjugated with monoclonal (MAb1) and polyclonal antibodies (PAb2), respectively. Using a sandwich-type immunocomplex bridged by Escherichia coli O157:H7, an efficient photocurrent-polarity-switching PEC system was formed on a paper-based working electrode (PWE). Owing to the spatial separation of the photogenerated carriers and the elimination of false-positive/negative signals by the polarity-switchable photocurrent, the proposed NIR PEC immunoassay for E. coli O157:H7 exhibits a considerably low detection limit of 8 colony-forming units/milliliter (CFU/mL) with a linear range from 25 to 5 × 107 CFU/mL. The platform includes a PWE with an automatic cleaning function and a portable PEC analyzer with smartphone-compatible Bluetooth capability, thus achieving point-of-care testing of E. coli O157:H7. The sensor was applied to the analysis of pork samples artificially contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, and the detection results were in good agreement with the plate counting method, a gold standard in the field. This work aimed to investigate the photoelectric activity of the NIR-responsive p/n-type composites and to provide a new signal-reversal route for the construction of an all-in-one ready-to-use PEC immunosensor for the detection of low-concentration biomolecules.

Abstract
SnS nanorods with near-infrared photoelectric conversion characteristics were successfully synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method. Gold nanoparticles were self-assembled onto SnS nanorods surface to form SnS/AuNPs nanocomposites. The integration of AuNP can significantly improve the photocurrent response of SnS nanorods under being illuminated with 808 nm near-infrared light. A near-infrared photoelectrochemical immunosensing platform based on SNS/AuNPs nanocomposites was constructed for sensing gastric cancer tumor marker CA72-4. Experimental conditions were optimized to improve the immunosensing performances for CA72-4 determination. As CA72-4 concentration varied from 0.01 to 50 U mL-1, the photocurrent variation between the immunosensor before and after reacting with CA72-4 was linearly related to the logarithm of its concentration. The detection limit was calculated to be 0.008 U mL-1. The practicability of the immunosensor was demonstrated by determining CA72-4 in human serum samples.

Abstract
Developing non-antibiotic-dependent antibacterial hydrogels for repairing infected skin defect remains largely unexplored. Herein, a synergic photothermal and synergic antibacterial hydrogel was designed via one-pot approach to cope with full-thickness skin wound infection. In this work, the mixture of silver‑sodium lignin sulfonate nanoparticles (Ag-SLS NPs) and polypyrrole-polydopamine nanoparticles (PPy-PDA NPs) for the first time as synergic photothermal agent was introduced into poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) to form Ag-SLS/PPy-PDA@PEGDA hydrogel. Thanks to the near-infrared light into heat conversion capacity of both Ag and PPy-PDA NPs, the formed hydrogel shows ultrahigh photothermal activity, and outstanding antibacterial activity to both Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria in vitro. Additionally, in vivo assay indicates that the hydrogel has outstanding long-term antibacterial effect due to the photothermal sterilization along with Ag ions release. Overall, the dual-synergic photothermal and antibacterial effects of the Ag-SLS/PPy-PDA@PEGDA hydrogel could highly accelerate infection wound healing, and thus has great potential to be used for tissue engineering.

Abstract
Herein, an efficient and feasible photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor based on gold nanoparticle-decorated graphitic-like carbon nitride (Au NPs@g-C3N4) with excellent photoelectric performance was designed for the highly sensitive detection of mercury ions (Hg2+) . The proposed Au NPs@g-C3N4 was first modified on the surface of the electrode, which possessed a remarkable photocurrent conversion efficiency and could produce a strong initial photocurrent. Then, the thymine-rich DNA (S1) was immobilized on the surface of the modified electrode via Au-N bonds. Subsequently, 1-hexanethiol (HT) was added to the resultant electrode to block nonspecific binding sites. Finally, the target Hg2+ was incubated on the surface of the modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). In the presence of target Hg2+, the thymine-Hg2+-thymine (T-Hg2+-T) structure formed due to the selective capture capability of thymine base pairs toward Hg2+, resulting in the significantly decrease of the photocurrent. Thereafter, the proposed PEC biosensor was successfully used for sensitive Hg2+ detection, as it possessed a wide linear range from 1 pM to 1000 nM with a low detection limit of 0.33 pM. Importantly, this study demonstrates a new method of detecting Hg2+ and provides a promising platform for the detection of other heavy metal ions of interest.

Abstract
Herein, we reported a label-free and reliable photoelectrochemical (PEC) platform for highly selective monitoring of norepinephrine (NE) based on metallic Bi nanoparticles anchored on hollow porous ZnSnO3 microspheres (3D Bi/ZnSnO3) via a simple solvothermal strategy. The designed 3D Bi/ZnSnO3 Schottky junction exhibited a unique photoanodic response toward NE among other catechol derivatives, such as epinephrine (EP) and dopamine (DA), and effectively shielded the interference from thirteen coexisting biomolecules like uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA). High selectivity and excellent sensitivity could be correlated to the unique chelating coordination interaction between NE and Zn2+ at surface sites as well as the efficient carrier separation of Bi/ZnSnO3, thereby developing a novel "signal-on" label-free and selective strategy for NE detection. The proposed Bi/ZnSnO3-based PEC sensor achieved remarkable NE biosensing with a low detection limit of 0.68 nmol L-1 and a wide response ranging from 0.002 to 350.0 μmol L-1. The applicability of this biosensor was realized for the selective analysis of NE in human serum, human urine and injection samples, laying the foundation for the label-free PEC monitoring of NE in biological fluids.

Abstract
In this work, a simple and highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor has been developed for detecting PCB72 based on TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) decorated with BiVO4 nanoparticles (NPs). The BiVO4 NPs-TiO2 NTs composites prepared through a simple hydrothermal method exhibit good visible-light adsorption ability, high PEC response and perfect photo-excited stability. The synthesized composites were explored as the photoactive sensing materials for development of a PEC sensing platform for the first time. Here, Au nanoparticles (NPs) were first deposited the composites, and the anti-PCB72 aptamer molecules were immobilized on the Au NPs-deposited BiVO4 NPs-TiO2 NTs. The developed PEC aptasensor exhibits high sensitivity and specificity for PCB72 with a wide linear range from 1 ng/L to 500 ng/L and a low detection limit of 0.23 ng/L. The application of the aptasensor was evaluated by determining PCB 72 in the environment water samples. Thus, a simple and efficient PEC sensing platform was established for detecting the content of PCBs in the environment.

Abstract
Quantitative analysis of receptor protein expression is essential to give new insights into tumor-related research. Benefitting from their high sensitivity and low background, photoelectrochemical (PEC) platforms are considered as powerful tools for evaluating the expression of receptor proteins. Herein, to reduce the cytotoxicity and facilitate the subsequent assembly, l-cysteine-modified Ag-ZnIn2S4 quantum dots (l-Cys AZIS QDs) are prepared and PEC responses under the irradiation of long wavelength light are obtained. To further improve the PEC behavior, iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is employed to form a Z-scheme structure with l-Cys AZIS QDs. The Z-scheme structure based on l-Cys AZIS QDs/FePc hybrid materials exhibits high photo-to-electric conversion efficiency and can be excited with near-infrared range light. Because hyaluronic acid linked to photoactive materials can recognize CD44 expressed on the membrane of cancer cells, cancer cells are immobilized onto l-Cys AZIS QDs/FePc hybrid materials, inducing a decrease of the photocurrent intensity. Consequently, a PEC cytosensor is constructed to quantify cancer cells expressing CD44. The PEC analytical platform is able to determine A549 cells in the range of 2 × 102 to 4.5 × 106 cells/mL, and a detection limit of 15 cells/mL is realized in the case of S/N = 3. In addition, the expression of CD44 in A549 and other five cancer cells is measured with this PEC method. Depending on our data, the expression of CD44 in different cancer cells is distinct, indicating great potential of this method in receptor protein-related studies.

Abstract
A suitable electron donor, which guarantees the stability of the whole system, is considered as the driving force of the PEC sensor. Nowadays, searching appropriate electron donor is still one of the orientations to explorate in the field of sensor. Na48[H496Mo368O1464S48]·ca.1000H2O (abbr. {Mo368}), as a type of polyoxometalate, has perfect morphology, definite size and unique electronic property. Due to the prominent water solubility, {Mo368} usually releases small cations and exists as large anions in the ultrapure water. The interesting property endows {Mo368} with excellent reducibility, which provides great feasibility to become an outstanding electron donor. In addition, FeOOH prepared through a simple operation owns high adsorption capacity, which ensures the fastness of other materials. Subsequently, the narrow band-gap of Bi2S3 and the unique noble metal properties of Au nanoparticles are utilized to co-sensitize FeOOH to improve the light-harvesting capability and photoelectric conversion efficiency. Combined with the specificity recognition of antigen and antibody, a novel photoelectrochemical sensor is constructed with a wide detection range of 1.00 pg mL-1 - 100 ng mL-1 and low detection limit (0.76 pg mL-1), which achieves the sensitive detection of cardiac troponin I in early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Photoelectrochemical (PEC) techniques are of fundamental and practical importance, and they have been widely used for solar energy conversion and experimental protection. Besides these important applications, an emerging and fast developing PEC application of PEC bioanalysis is receiving more attention from both academic and clinic communities. However, the typical PEC biosensing is still limited under illumination of ultraviolet and visible (UV/vis) light, which hampers its in vivo detection in deep tissues. Expanding the optical absorption wavelength of photoelectrodes from the UV/vis light region into the near-infrared (NIR) light region is highly desirable due to its deep tissue penetrability and minimal invasiveness for organisms, but the exploration of a facile strategy to implement efficient NIR absorption with biocompatible materials is still a big challenge. Herein, under the guidance of theorical calculations, we propose a strategy through modulation of bulk/surface defects and decoration of Au nanoparticles on TiO2 nanotube photonic crystals to implement efficient NIR response and thus successfully realize sensitive and selective PEC detection of antibiotics in real bio- and experimental-samples under NIR illumination. In addition, we first implement the in vivo PEC detection under illumination of NIR light. We have faith that this new NIR photoelectric responsive strategy will provide a broad platform for detection of life-related biomolecules in deep tissues or even in vivo for real-time measurement and shed light on the intrinsic connections between biomarkers and clinical diseases.
