Synergistic Effects of Inorganic-Organic Protective Layer for Robust Cycling Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Batteries

Design and Synthesis of a Robust and Multifunctional Superhydrophobic Coating with a Three-Dimensional Network Structure on a Paper-Based Material

A fundamental challenge in artificial superhydrophobic papers is their poor resistance to mechanical abrasion, which limits their practical application in different fields. Herein, a robust and multifunctional superhydrophobic paper is successfully fabricated via a facile spraying method by combining silver nanowires and fluorinated titania nanoparticles through a common paper sizing agent (alkyl ketene dimer) onto paper. It is shown that the surface of the paper-based material presents a three-dimensional network structure due to the cross-linking of silver nanowires with a high aspect ratio. Further hydrophilic and hydrophobic performance test results show that it exhibits exceptional water repellency, with a desirable static contact angle of 165° and roll-off angle of 6.2°. The superhydrophobic paper showcases excellent mechanical durability and maintains its superhydrophobicity even after enduring 130 linear sandpaper abrasion cycles or high-velocity water jetting impact benefited from interfacial van der Waals and hydrogen bonding. Simultaneously, the robust superhydrophobic surface can effectively prevent the penetration of acid or alkali solutions, as well as UV light, resulting in excellent chemical stability. Additionally, the superhydrophobic paper offers supplementary features such as self-cleaning, electrical conductivity, and antibacterial capability. Further development of this strategy paves a way toward next-generation superhydrophobic paper composed of nanostructures and characterized by multiple (or additional) functionalities.

In situ construction of robust artificial solid-electrolyte interphase layer on lithium-metal anode by a facile one-step solution route

Development of high energy density lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) is markedly hindered by the interfacial instability on lithium-metal anode side. Solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a fundamental factor to regulate dendrite growth and enhance the stability of lithium-metal anodes. Here, trithiocyanuric acid, a triazine derivative with sulfhydryl groups, is used as an efficient promoter to favor the construction of a robust artificial SEI layer on the lithium metal surface, which greatly benefits the stability and efficiency of LMBs. With the assistance of trithiocyanuric acid facilely introduced on the Li surface via a one-step solution route, a highly uniform artificial SEI layer rich in Li2S and Li3N is formed, which efficiently facilitates uniform lithium deposition and suppresses lithium dendrite growth. Remarkably, the Li|Li cell displays stable lithium plating/stripping cycling over 800 h at 0.5 mA cm-2, 1 mAh cm-2, and the Li|LFP cells exhibit prolonged lifespan over 700 cycles at 3 C and superior rate performance from 2 to 20 C. This work provides a facile design strategy for constructing a superb artificial SEI layer for high-performance LMBs.

Probing the Mechanically Stable Solid Electrolyte Interphase and the Implications in Design Strategies

The inevitable volume expansion of secondary battery anodes during cycling imposes forces on the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The battery performance is closely related to the capability of SEI to maintain intact under the cyclic loading conditions, which basically boils down to the mechanical properties of SEI. The volatile and complex nature of SEI as well as its nanoscale thickness and environmental sensitivity make the interpretation of its mechanical behavior many roadblocks. Widely varied approaches are adopted to investigate the mechanical properties of SEI, and diverse opinions are generated. The lack of consensus at both technical and theoretical levels has hindered the development of effective design strategies to maximize the mechanical stability of SEIs. Here, the essential and desirable mechanical properties of SEI, the available mechanical characterization methods, and important issues meriting attention for higher test accuracy are outlined. Previous attempts to optimize battery performance by tuning SEI mechanical properties are also scrutinized, inconsistencies in these efforts are elucidated, and the underlying causes are explored. Finally, a set of research protocols is proposed to accelerate the achievement of superior battery cycling performance by improving the mechanical stability of SEI.

Rational Design of a Robust Flexible Triblock Polyurea Copolymer Protective Layer for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Dendrite growth and volume expansion in lithium metal are the most important obstacles affecting the actual applications of lithium metal batteries. Herein, we design a robust flexible artificial solid electrolyte interphase layer based on a triblock copolymer polyurea film, which promotes uniform lithium deposition on the surface of the lithium metal electrode and has a high lithium-ion transference number. The high elasticity and close contact of polyurea compounds effectively suppress lithium dendrite growth and volume expansion in the Li anode, which are effectively confirmed by electrochemical characterization and optical microscopy observation. The symmetrical batteries with the PU-Li metal anode can achieve stable and reversible Li plating/stripping over 500 h at a current density of 5 mA cm^-2. Matched with the high-mass-loaded S cathode and the commercial NCM523 cathode, this film significantly improves the cycle life of lithium metal batteries.

Soybean Protein Fiber Enabled Controllable Li Deposition and a LiF-Nanocrystal-Enriched Interface for Stable Li Metal Batteries

The proliferation of lithium (Li) dendrites stemming from uncontrollable Li deposition seriously limits the practical application of Li metal batteries. The regulation of uniform Li deposition is thus a prerequisite for promoting a stable Li metal anode. Herein, a commercial lithiophilic skeleton of soybean protein fiber (SPF) is introduced to homogenize the Li-ion flux and induce the biomimetic Li growth behavior. Especially, the SPF can promote the formation of a LiF-nanocrystal-enriched interface upon cycling, resulting in low interfacial impedance and rapid charge transfer kinetics. Finally, the SPF-mediated Li metal anode can achieve high Coulombic efficiency of 98.7% more than 550 cycles and a long-term lifespan over 3400 h (∼8500 cycles) in symmetric tests. Furthermore, the practical pouch cell modified with SPF can maintain superior electrochemical performance over 170 cycles under a low N/P ratio and high mass loading of the cathode.

Lithium-Air Batteries: Air-Breathing Challenges and Perspective

Lithium-oxygen (Li-O₂) batteries have been intensively investigated in recent decades for their utilization in electric vehicles. The intrinsic challenges arising from O₂ (electro)chemistry have been mitigated by developing various types of catalysts, porous electrode materials, and stable electrolyte solutions. At the next stage, we face the need to reform batteries by substituting pure O₂ gas with air from Earth's atmosphere. Thus, the key emerging challenges of Li-air batteries, which are related to the selective filtration of O₂ gas from air and the suppression of undesired reactions with other constituents in air, such as N₂, water vapor (H₂O), and carbon dioxide (CO₂), should be properly addressed. In this review, we discuss all key aspects for developing Li-air batteries that are optimized for operating in ambient air and highlight the crucial considerations and perspectives for future air-breathing batteries.

A coupled polymeric porphyrin complex as a novel cathode for highly stable lithium organic batteries

A highly conjugated polymeric porphyrin with an ethynyl group is proposed as a new cathode for lithium organic batteries. The electrochemical performance is significantly improved after a simple coupled polymerization, resulting in excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 99.2% for 2000 cycles.
