Abstract
Personalized laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) has a broader application prospect than that of traditional casting. In this paper, the composition and corrosion resistance of the passive film formation mechanism of TC4 prepared by optimization of PBF-LB/M techniques and traditional casting were systematically studied in 0.9 wt.% NaCl at 37 °C by electrochemical technique and surface analysis. The rates of the passive film formation process, corrosion resistance and composition of TC4 show different characteristics for the different preparation processes. Although the rate of passive film formation of cast-TC4 was higher at the initial immersion, the open circuit potential was more positive, and the film thickness was larger after stabilization, those facts show no positive correlation with corrosion resistance. On the contrary, with no obvious defects on the optimized PBF-LB/M-TC4, the passive film resistance is 2.5 times more, the defect concentration is reduced by 30%, and the TiO2 content is higher than that of the cast-TC4, making the martensitic-based PBF-LB/M-TC4 exhibit excellent corrosion resistance. This also provides good technical support for the further clinical application of PBF-LB/M-TC4.

Abstract
The increasing need for joint replacement surgeries, musculoskeletal repairs, and orthodontics worldwide prompts emerging technologies to evolve with healthcare's changing landscape. Metallic orthopaedic materials have a shared application history with the aerospace industry, making them only partly efficient in the biomedical domain. However, suitability of metallic materials in bone tissue replacements and regenerative therapies remains unchallenged due to their superior mechanical properties, eventhough they are not perfectly biocompatible. Therefore, exploring ways to improve biocompatibility is the most critical step toward designing the next generation of metallic biomaterials. This review discusses methods of improving biocompatibility of metals used in biomedical devices using surface modification, bulk modification, and incorporation of biologics. Our investigation spans multiple length scales, from bulk metals to the effect of microporosities, surface nanoarchitecture, and biomolecules such as DNA incorporation for enhanced biological response in metallic materials. We examine recent technologies such as 3D printing in alloy design and storing surface charge on nanoarchitecture surfaces, metal-on-metal, and ceramic-on-metal coatings to present a coherent and comprehensive understanding of the subject. Finally, we consider the advantages and challenges of metallic biomaterials and identify future directions.

Abstract
The exponential rise of healthcare problems like human aging and road traffic accidents have developed an intrinsic challenge to biomedical sectors concerning the arrangement of patient-specific biomedical products. The additively manufactured implants and scaffolds have captured global attention over the last two decades concerning their printing quality and ease of manufacturing. However, the inherent challenges associated with additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, namely process selection, level of complexity, printing speed, resolution, biomaterial choice, and consumed energy, still pose several limitations on their use. Recently, the whole world has faced severe supply chain disruptions of personal protective equipment and basic medical facilities due to a respiratory disease known as the coronavirus (COVID-19). In this regard, local and global AM manufacturers have printed biomedical products to level the supply-demand equation. The potential of AM technologies for biomedical applications before, during, and post-COVID-19 pandemic alongwith its relation to the industry 4.0 (I4.0) concept is discussed herein. Moreover, additive manufacturing technologies are studied in this work concerning their working principle, classification, materials, processing variables, output responses, merits, challenges, and biomedical applications. Different factors affecting the sustainable performance in AM for biomedical applications are discussed with more focus on the comparative examination of consumed energy to determine which process is more sustainable. The recent advancements in the field like 4D printing and 5D printing are useful for the successful implementation of I4.0 to combat any future pandemic scenario. The potential of hybrid printing, multi-materials printing, and printing with smart materials, has been identified as hot research areas to produce scaffolds and implants in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and orthopedic implants.

Abstract
This study proposes a new method, electrochemical critical localized corrosion potential (E-CLCP), in order to evaluate localized corrosion resistance of biomedical additive manufacturing (AM) titanium (Ti) alloys. The procedures for determining E-CLCP are completely different from that of the electrochemical critically localized corrosion temperature (E-CLCT) method (ISO 22910:2020). However, its application should be limited to pH and temperature of the human body because of the temperature scan. E-CLCP displays the localized corrosion resistance of AM Ti alloys based on the human body's repassivation kinetics, whereas E-CLCT displays the localized corrosion resistance of the alloys based on passive film breakdown in much harsher corrosive environments.

Abstract
The use of dental implants is growing rapidly for the last few decades and Ti-based dental implants are a commonly used prosthetic structure in dentistry. Recently, the combined effect of corrosion and wear, called tribocorrosion, is considered as a major driving process in the early failure of dental implants. However, no previous study has reported the prediction of tribocorrosion processes in advance. Therefore, this study is a novel investigation on how the acoustic emission (AE) technique can predict tribocorrosion processes in commercially-pure titanium (cpTi) and titanium-zirconium (TiZr) alloys. In this study, tribocorrosion tests were performed under potentiostatic conditions and AE detection system associated with it captures AE data. Current evolution and friction coefficient data obtained from the potentiostatic evaluations were compared with AE absolute energy showcased the same data interpretation of tribocorrosion characteristics. Other AE data such as duration, count, and amplitude, matched more closely with other potentiostatic corrosion evaluations and delivered more promising results in the detection of tribocorrosion. Hence, AE can be consider as a tool for predicting tribocorrosion in dental implants. Experimental results also reveal Ti5Zr as one of the most appropriate dental implant materials while exposing Ti10Zr's lower effectiveness to withstand in the simulated oral environment.

Abstract
Newly developed Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb has fascinating mechanical properties to be used as a biomedical material. However, there is still a lack of investigation focusing on the corrosion behavior of Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb. In this work, the microstructure and corrosion behavior of as-cast Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb was investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical measurements. Hank’s solution was used as the electrolyte. A classical as-cast Ti–6Al–4V was used as reference. The results showed that Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb has a higher corrosion potential and a lower corrosion current density compared with Ti–6Al–4V, indicating better corrosion resistance. However, after applying anodic potentials, Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb shows larger passivation current density in both potentiodynamic polarization and potentiostatic polarization tests. This is because more alloying elements contained in Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb trigger the production of a larger number of oxygen vacancies, resulting in a higher flux of oxygen vacancy. This finding illustrates that the passive film on Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb is less protective compared with that on Ti–6Al–4V when applying an anodic potential in their passivation range.

Abstract
β-type titanium (Ti) alloys have attracted a lot of attention as novel biomedical materials in the past decades due to their low elastic moduli and good biocompatibility. This article provides a broad and extensive review of β-type Ti alloys in terms of alloy design, preparation methods, mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, and biocompatibility. After briefly introducing the development of Ti and Ti alloys for biomedical applications, this article reviews the design of β-type Ti alloys from the perspective of the molybdenum equivalency (Moeq) method and DV-Xα molecular orbital method. Based on these methods, a considerable number of β-type Ti alloys are developed. Although β-type Ti alloys have lower elastic moduli compared with other types of Ti alloys, they still possess higher elastic moduli than human bones. Therefore, porous β-type Ti alloys with declined elastic modulus have been developed by some preparation methods, such as powder metallurgy, additive manufacture and so on. As reviewed, β-type Ti alloys have comparable or even better mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, and biocompatibility compared with other types of Ti alloys. Hence, β-type Ti alloys are the more suitable materials used as implant materials. However, there are still some problems with β-type Ti alloys, such as biological inertness. As such, summarizing the findings from the current literature, suggestions forβ-type Ti alloys with bioactive coatings are proposed for the future development.

Abstract
The impact of four pre-treatment techniques on the surface morphology and chemistry, residual stress, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance in a physiological saline solution and cell colonization of commercially pure titanium is examined in detail. Mechanical polishing, electrochemical etching, chemical etching in Kroll's reagent, and ion sputter etching with argon ions were applied. Surface morphologies reflect the nature of surface layer removal. Significant roughening of the surface and a characteristic microtopology become apparent as a result of the sensitivity of chemical and ion sputter etching to the grain orientation. The hardness in the near surface region was controlled by the amount of residual stress. Etching of the stressed surface layer led to a reduction in residual stress and surface hardness. A compact passivation layer composed of TiO, TiO2 and Ti2O3 native oxides imparted high corrosion resistance to the surface after mechanical polishing, chemical and electrochemical etching. The ion sputter etched surface showed substantially reduced corrosion resistance, where the corrosion process was controlled by electron transfer. The specific topology affected the adhesion of the cell to the surface rather than the cell area coverage. The cell area coverage increased with the corrosion stability of the surface.

Abstract
In order to achieve an effective balance between plasticity and strength, a group of Ti-26Nb-xZr-yMn (x = 4, 7, 10 wt% and y = 3, 5 wt%) alloys were designed to evaluate the effects of Mn and Zr on the microstructures, mechanical properties and strengthening effects of the TiNb system. All the investigated alloys illustrate a monolithic β phase in their microstructure and they all possess substantial true plasticity (~160%) and true maximum strength (~ 950 MPa) without fracture during the compression tests within the load capacity of 100 kN. The contribution of solid-solution, grain-boundary and dislocation strengthening mechanisms have been evaluated using the strengthening model for β Ti alloys for all the investigated alloys. Among the investigated alloys, Ti-26Nb-4Zr-5Mn demonstrates the highest true yield strength (654 MPa), dislocation density (2.45 × 1015 m-2) and hardness (242 HV) along with improved strain hardening ability in terms of strain hardening indices (0.42 and 0.09). Furthermore, based on the superior mechanical properties among the investigated alloys, the electrochemical performance of Ti-26Nb-4Zr-3Mn and Ti-26Nb-4Zr-5Mn have also been analyzed in this work. The electrochemical measurements show that both alloys have almost similar corrosion potential and corrosion current density in simulated body fluid, i.e., -0.45 V and 0.838 nA/cm2 for Ti-26Nb-4Zr-3Mn, -0.48 V and 0.839 nA/cm2 for Ti-26Nb-4Zr-5Mn, respectively.

Abstract
Particle size is a critical consideration for many powder coating-related industries since it significantly influences the properties of the produced materials. However, the effect of particle size on the characteristics of plasma sprayed NiCrBSi coatings is not well understood. This work investigates the microstructures, hardness and electrochemical corrosion behavior of plasma sprayed NiCrBSi coatings synthesized using different-sized powders. All coatings mainly consist of Ni, N3B, CrB, Cr7C3 and Cr3C2 phases. The coatings produced by small particles (50–75 μm) exhibit lower porosity (2.0 ± 0.8%). Such coatings show a higher fraction (15.5 vol.%) of the amorphous phase and lower hardness (700 HV0.5) than the counterparts (8.7 vol.% and 760 HV0.5, respectively) produced by large particles (75–100 μm) with higher porosity (3.0 ± 1.6%). Meanwhile, the coatings produced from smaller particles possess a larger number of non-bonded boundaries, leading to the easier penetration of corrosive medium, as well as a higher corrosion current density (0.254 ± 0.062 μA/cm2) and a lower charge transfer resistance (0.37 ± 0.07 MΩ cm2). These distinctions are attributed to particle size-induced different melting degrees and stackings of in-flight particles during deposition.
