Hollow Mesoporous Metal–Organic Frameworks with Enhanced Diffusion for Highly Efficient Catalysis

Spatial confinement Fenton oxidation realized via tunable nanopore structure of porous carbon

Spatially confined structure exhibits surprising physics and chemistry properties that significantly impact the thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation reactions. Herein, porous carbons are rationally designed for tunable nanopore structures (micropores, 4.12 % ∼ 91.64 %) and diverse spatial confinement ability, as indicated by their differential enhancement performances in the Fenton oxidation. Porous carbons can alter the characteristics of the charge transport process for accelerating sustainable electron shuttle between hydrogen peroxide and iron species, and thus exhibit long-term performance (17 cycling tests). The positive spatial confinement for boosting Fenton oxidation (charge transport, mass transfer) occurs in nanochannels < 1 nm, while the diminished effect ranges of 1-1.5 nm, and the adverse effect ranges greater than 1.5 nm. The density functional theory calculation provides further support for certifying the promoted charge transport process and spatial confinement for hydroxyl radical inside the confined nanochannel structure (below 1 nm, especially) by the comparatively large electron cloud and the relatively negative adsorption energy, respectively. Coupling nanochannels with the Fenton oxidation greatly utilize hydrogen peroxide, due to spatial nanoconfinement and selective adsorption towards target contaminants. This strategy of deploying nanochannels in catalyst design can be applied for the elaborate construction of efficient nanostructured catalysts for environmental remediation.

Metal-organic frameworks for biomedical applications: A review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emergent materials in diverse prospective biomedical uses, owing to their inherent features such as adjustable pore dimension and volume, well-defined active sites, high surface area, and hybrid structures. The multifunctionality and unique chemical and biological characteristics of MOFs allow them as ideal platforms for sensing numerous emergent biomolecules with real-time monitoring towards the point-of-care applications. This review objects to deliver key insights on the topical developments of MOFs for biomedical applications. The rational design, preparation of stable MOF architectures, chemical and biological properties, biocompatibility, enzyme-mimicking materials, fabrication of biosensor platforms, and the exploration in diagnostic and therapeutic systems are compiled. The state-of-the-art, major challenges, and the imminent perspectives to improve the progressions convoluted outside the proof-of-concept, especially for biosensor platforms, imaging, and photodynamic therapy in biomedical research are also described. The present review may excite the interdisciplinary studies at the juncture of MOFs and biomedicine.

Helical polyisocyanide-based macroporous organic catalysts for asymmetric Michael addition with high efficiency and stereoselectivity

Porous materials have attracted interest due to their high specific surface area and rich functionality. Immobilizing organocatalysts onto porous polymers not only boosts enantioselectivity but also improves the reaction rates. In this work, a series of porous polymers C-poly-3ms with rigid polyisocyanide-carrying secondary amine pendants as building blocks were successfully prepared. And the pore size and optical activity of C-poly-3ms can be controlled by the length of the polyisocyanide blocks due to their rigid and helical backbone. C-poly-3150 demonstrated a preferred left-handed helix with a θ 364 value of -8.21 × 103. The pore size and S BET of C-poly-3150 were 17.52 nm and 7.98 m2 g-1, respectively. The porous C-poly-3150 catalyzes the asymmetric Michael addition reaction efficiently and generates the target products in satisfactory yield and excellent enantioselectivity. For 6ab, an enantiomeric excess (ee) and a diastereomeric ratio (dr) up to 99% and 99/1 could be achieved, respectively. The recovered catalyst can be recycled at least 6 times in the asymmetric Michael addition reaction while maintaining activity and stereoselectivity.

Polynuclear Cobalt Cluster-Based Coordination Polymers for Efficient Nitrate-to-Ammonia Electroreduction

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NITRR) holds great promise for purifying wastewater and producing valuable ammonia (NH3). However, the lack of efficient electrocatalysts has impeded the achievement of highly selective NH3 synthesis from the NITRR. In this study, we report the design and synthesis of two polynuclear Co-cluster-based coordination polymers, {[Co2(TCPPDA)(H2O)5]·(H2O)9(DMF)} and {Co1.5(TCPPDA)[(CH3)2NH2]·(H2O)6(DMF)2} (namely, NJUZ-2 and NJUZ-3), which possess distinct coordination motifs with well-defined porosity, high-density catalytic sites, accessible mass transfer channels, and nanoconfined chemical environments. Benefitting from their intriguing multicore metal-organic coordination framework structures, NJUZ-2 and NJUZ-3 exhibit remarkable catalytic activities for the NITRR. At a potential of -0.8 V (vs. RHE) in an H-type cell, they achieve an optimal Faradaic efficiency of approximately 98.5% and high long-term durability for selective NH3 production. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic performance is well maintained even under strongly acidic conditions. When operated under an industrially relevant current density of 469.9 mA cm-2 in a flow cell, a high NH3 yield rate of up to 3370.6 mmol h-1 g-1cat. was observed at -0.5 V (vs. RHE), which is 20.1-fold higher than that obtained in H-type cells under the same conditions. Extensive experimental analyses, in combination with theoretical computations, reveal that the great enhancement of the NITRR activity is attributed to the preferential adsorption of NO3- and the reduction in energy input required for the hydrogenation of *NO3 and *NO2 intermediates.

2D-Like Catalyst with a Micro-nanolinked Functional Surface for Water Purification

In water purification, the performance of heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes significantly relies upon the utilization of the catalyst's specific surface area (SSA). However, the presence of the structural "dead volume" and pore-size-induced diffusion-reaction trade-off limitation restricts the functioning of the SSA. Here, we reported an effective approach to make the best SSA by changing the traditional 3D spherule catalyst into a 2D-like form and creating an in situ micro-nanolinked structure. Thus, a 2D-like catalyst was obtained which was characterized by a mini "paddy field" surface, and it exhibited a sharply decreased dead volume, a highly available SSA and oriented flexibility. Given its paddy-field-like mass-transfer routine, the organic capture capability was 7.5-fold higher than that of the catalyst with mesopores only. Moreover, such a catalyst exhibited a record-high O3-to-·OH transition rate of 2.86 × 10-8 compared with reported millimetric catalysts (metal base), which contributed to a 6.12-fold higher total organic removal per catalyst mass than traditional 3D catalysts. The facile scale preparation, performance stability, and significant material savings with the 2D-like catalyst were also beneficial for practical applications. Our findings provide a unique and general approach for designing potential catalysts with excellent performance in water purification.

Recent Advances in Hierarchical Porous Engineering of MOFs and Their Derived Materials for Catalytic and Battery: Methods and Application

Hierarchical porous materials have attracted the attention of researchers due to their enormous specific surface area, maximized active site utilization efficiency, and unique structure and properties. In this context, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a unique mix of properties that make them particularly appealing as tunable porous substrates containing highly active sites. This review focuses on recent advances in the types and synthetic strategies of hierarchical porous MOFs and their derived materials. Furthermore, it highlights the relationship between the mass diffusion and transport of hierarchical porous structures and the pore size with examples and simulations, while identifying their potential and limitations. On this basis, how the synthesis conditions affect the structure and electrochemical properties of MOFs based hierarchical porous materials with different structures is discussed, highlighting the prospects and challenges for the synthetization, as well as further scientific research and practical applications. Finally, some insights into current research and future design ideas for advanced MOFs based hierarchical porous materials are presented.

A facile dual-template-directed successive assembly approach to hollow multi-shell mesoporous metal-organic framework particles

Hollow multi-shell mesoporous metal-organic framework (MOF) particles with accessible compartmentalization environments, plentiful heterogeneous interfaces, and abundant framework diversity are expected to hold great potential for catalysis, energy conversion, and biotechnology. However, their synthetic methodology has not yet been established. In this work, a facile dual-template-directed successive assembly approach has been developed for the preparation of monodisperse hollow multi-shell mesoporous MOF (UiO-66-NH2) particles through one-step selective etching of successively grown multi-layer MOFs with alternating two types of mesostructured layers. This strategy enables the preparation of hollow multi-shell mesoporous UiO-66-NH2 nanostructures with controllable shell numbers, accessible mesochannels, large pore volume, tunable shell thickness and chamber sizes. The methodology relies on creating multiple alternating layers of two different mesostructured MOFs via dual-template-directed successive assembly and their difference in framework stability upon chemical etching. Benefiting from the highly accessible Lewis acidic sites and the accumulation of reactants within the multi-compartment architecture, the resultant hollow multi-shell mesoporous UiO-66-NH2 particles exhibit enhanced catalytic activity for CO2 cycloaddition reaction. The dual-template-directed successive assembly strategy paves the way toward the rational construction of elaborate hierarchical MOF nanoarchitectures with specific physical and chemical features for different applications.

Ultrathin covalent organic overlayers on metal nanocrystals for highly selective plasmonic photocatalysis

Metal nanoparticle-organic interfaces are common but remain elusive for controlling reactions due to the complex interactions of randomly formed ligand-layers. This paper presents an approach for enhancing the selectivity of catalytic reactions by constructing a skin-like few-nanometre ultrathin crystalline porous covalent organic overlayer on a plasmonic nanoparticle surface. This organic overlayer features a highly ordered layout of pore openings that facilitates molecule entry without any surface poisoning effects and simultaneously endows favourable electronic effects to control molecular adsorption-desorption. Conformal organic overlayers are synthesised through the plasmonic oxidative activation and intermolecular covalent crosslinking of molecular units. We develop a light-operated multicomponent interfaced plasmonic catalytic platform comprising Pd-modified gold nanoparticles inside hollow silica to achieve the highly efficient and selective semihydrogenation of alkynes. This approach demonstrates a way to control molecular adsorption behaviours on metal surfaces, breaking the linear scaling relationship and simultaneously enhancing activity and selectivity.

MOF-based catalysts: insights into the chemical transformation of greenhouse and toxic gases

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts are outstanding alternative materials for the chemical transformation of greenhouse and toxic gases into high-add-value products. MOF catalysts exhibit remarkable properties to host different active sites. The combination of catalytic properties of MOFs is mentioned in order to understand their application. Furthermore, the main catalytic reactions, which involve the chemical transformation of CH4, CO2, NOx, fluorinated gases, O3, CO, VOCs, and H2S, are highlighted. The main active centers and reaction conditions for these reactions are presented and discussed to understand the reaction mechanisms. Interestingly, implementing MOF materials as catalysts for toxic gas-phase reactions is a great opportunity to provide new alternatives to enhance the air quality of our planet.

Yolk-Shell and Hollow Zr/Ce-UiO-66 for Manipulating Selectivity in Tandem Reactions and Photoreactions

One of the hallmarks of multicomponent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is to finely tune their active centers to achieve product selectivity. In particular, obtaining bimetallic MOF hollow structures with precisely tailored redox centers under the same topology is still challenging despite a recent surge of such efforts. Herein, we present an engineering strategy named "cluster labilization" to generate hierarchically porous MOF composites with hollow structures and tunable active centers. By partially replacing zirconium with cerium in the hexanuclear clusters of UiO-66, unevenly distributed yolk-shell structures (YSS) were formed. Through acid treatment or annealing of the YSS precursor, single-shell hollow structures (SSHS) or double-shell hollow structures (DSHS) can be obtained, respectively. The active centers in SSHS and DSHS differ in their species, valence, and spatial locations. More importantly, YSS, SSHS, and DSHS with distinct active centers and microenvironments exhibit tunable catalytic activity, reversed selectivity, and high stability in the tandem reaction and the photoreaction.

Chemically routed interpore molecular diffusion in metal-organic framework thin films

Transport diffusivity of molecules in a porous solid is constricted by the rate at which molecules move from one pore to the other, along the concentration gradient, i.e. by following Fickian diffusion. In heterogeneous porous materials, i.e. in the presence of pores of different sizes and chemical environments, diffusion rate and directionality remain tricky to estimate and adjust. In such a porous system, we have realized that molecular diffusion direction can be orthogonal to the concentration gradient. To experimentally determine this complex diffusion rate dependency and get insight of the microscopic diffusion pathway, we have designed a model nanoporous structure, metal-organic framework (MOF). In this model two chemically and geometrically distinct pore windows are spatially oriented by an epitaxial, layer-by-layer growth method. The specific design of the nanoporous channels and quantitative mass uptake rate measurements have indicated that the mass uptake is governed by the interpore diffusion along the direction orthogonal to the concentration gradient. This revelation allows chemically carving the nanopores, and accelerating the interpore diffusion and kinetic diffusion selectivity.

Heterogeneous Ni-MoN nanosheet-assembled microspheres for urea-assisted hydrogen production

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a promising technology for sustainable hydrogen (H₂) production; however, it is restricted by the kinetically sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Replacing OER with urea oxidation reaction (UOR) with low thermodynamic potential can simultaneously improve the energy efficiency of H₂ production and purify urea-containing wastewater. Here we report a facile assembly-calcination two-step method to synthesize heterogeneous Ni-MoN nanosheet-assembled microspheres (Ni-MoN NAMs). The nanosheet-assembled structure and the synergistic metallic Ni-MoN heterogeneous interface endow the Ni-MoN NAMs with good OER (1.52 V@10 mA cm^-2), UOR (1.28 V@10 mA cm^-2), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, 0.16 V@10 mA cm^-2) activity. The two-electrode urea electrolysis cell with Ni-MoN NAMs as both the cathode and anode requires an extremely low cell voltage of 1.41 V to afford 20 mA cm^-2, which is 0.3 V lower than that of the water electrolyzer, paving the way for energy-saving H₂ production.

Kinetics Driven by Hollow Nanoreactors: An Opportunity for Controllable Catalysis

As a novel class of catalytic materials, hollow nanoreactors offer new opportunities for improving catalytic performance owing to their higher controllability on molecular kinetic behavior. Nevertheless, to achieve controllable catalysis with specific purposes, the catalytic mechanism occurring inside hollow nanoreactors remains to be further understood. In this context, this Review presents a focused discussion about the basic concept of hollow nanoreactors, the underlying theory for hollow nanoreactor-driven kinetics, and the intrinsic correlation between key structural parameters of hollow nanoreactors and molecular kinetic behaviors. We aim to provide in-depth insights into understanding kinetics occurred within typical hollow nanoreactors. The perspectives proposed in this paper may contribute to the development of the fundamental theoretical framework of hollow nanoreactor-driven catalysis.

Low quantity of Pt loaded onto CeCoOx nanoboxes: Surface-rich reactive oxygen species for catalytic oxidation of toluene

An optimized oxygen activity of catalysts can facilitate oxidation of volatile organic compounds. This work shows the first construction of Ce-Co oxide thin-walled nanoboxes. Bulk-phase lattice oxygen is activated by metal-metal interactions. The subsequent uniform dispersion of low loaded Pt nanoparticles further enhances the surface-adsorbed oxygen content, and creates an oxygen-rich reaction interface. Competitive adsorption of water vapor was also inhibited, and complete catalytic oxidation of toluene was achieved at low temperature (T₉₀ =140 °C). A diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy probe was used to investigate the adsorption-catalytic process and the possible synergistic catalytic mechanism (Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars-van Krevelen). This work provides a strategy for improving the catalyt Crystal structure ic oxidation performance of nanocatalysts for volatile organic compounds by increasing the catalytic oxygen activity.

Beyond Pristine Metal-Organic Frameworks: Preparation of Hollow MOFs and Their Composites for Catalysis, Sensing, and Adsorption Removal Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been broadly applied to numerous domains with a substantial surface area, tunable pore size, and multiple unsaturated metal sites. Recently, hollow MOFs have greatly attracted the scientific community due to their internal cavities and gradient pore structures. Hollow MOFs have a higher tunability, faster mass-transfer rates, and more accessible active sites when compared to traditional, solid MOFs. Hollow MOFs are also considered to be candidates for some functional material carriers. For example, composite materials such as hollow MOFs and metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, and enzymes have been prepared. These composite materials integrate the characteristics of hollow MOFs with functional materials and are broadly used in many aspects. This review describes the preparation strategies of hollow MOFs and their composites as well as their applications in organic catalysis, electrochemical sensing, and adsorption separation. Finally, we hope that this review provides meaningful knowledge about hollow-MOF composites and their derivatives and offers many valuable references to develop hollow-MOF-based applied materials.

A robust hollow metal-organic framework with enhanced diffusion for size selective catalysis

Single crystalline (SC) hollow metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent host materials for molecular and nanoparticle catalysts. However, due to synthetic challenges, chemically robust SC hollow MOFs are rare. This work reports the construction of a defect-free and chemically stable SC hollow MOF, MOF-801(h), through templated growth from a unit cell mismatched core, UiO-66. Under the protection of excess MOF-801 ligand, fumaric acid, the MOF-801 shell was perfectly retained while the isoreticular UiO-66 core was selectively and completely etched away by formic acid. The combination of a large cavity, small aperture and short diffusion length allows the Pt nanoparticle encapsulated composite catalyst, Pt⊂MOF-801(h), to perform size selective hydrogenation of nitro compounds at an accelerated speed. Impressively, the catalyst can undergo concentrated HCl or boiling water treatment while maintaining its crystallinity, morphology, catalytic activity, and size selectivity. In addition, Au nanoparticles encapsulated catalyst, Au⊂MOF-801(h), was used for the size selective nucleophilic addition of HCl to terminal alkynes for the first time, which is a harsh reaction involving high concentrations of a strong acid.

Interface Synergistic Effect from Hierarchically Porous Cu(OH)2@FCN MOF/CF Nanosheet Arrays Boosting Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

The electrolysis of water is an efficient and environmentally friendly technology for large-scale hydrogen production. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involves a multi-electron–proton coupling transfer step that limits the efficiency of water splitting. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop electrocatalysts with expected activity and stability to accelerate the kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction. In this paper, hierarchically porous Cu(OH)2@(Fe, Co, Ni)MOF/CF nanosheet (denoted as Cu(OH)2@FCN MOF/CF) arrays were successfully prepared by the hydrothermally induced in situ growth of FCN MOF nanosheets using modified Cu(OH)2 nanowires as carriers; herein, the tuned active species of metal ligands in the FCN MOF composition structure are used as the main catalytic reaction size in the OER. The synergistic effect of a unique porous structure and the active metal-ligand species in the MOF render the catalyst a large electrochemically active surface area and more active species. Then, the active material is fully contacted with the electrolyte to expose more electrochemically active sites, thus greatly improving the electrocatalytic activity and durability of the OER. Specifically, the Cu(OH)2@FCN MOF/CF delivers a minimum overpotential of 290 mV and low Tafel slope of 96.15 mV·dec−1 at 10 mA·cm−2 as well as ultra-long cycling stability. The resulted OER performance is superior to most reported MOF-based electrocatalysts. This novel structural design not only provides a new strategy for the facile preparation of low-cost and high-efficiency OER electrocatalysts but also paves an avenue for the development of other MOF-based composite electrocatalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performances.

Hollow mesoporous atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts with enhanced diffusion for catalysis involving larger molecules

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) show great promise in various applications due to their maximal atom utilization efficiency. However, the controlled synthesis of SACs with appropriate porous structures remains a challenge that must be overcome to address the diffusion issues in catalysis. Resolving these diffusion issues has become increasingly important because the intrinsic activity of the catalysts is dramatically improved by spatially isolated single-atom sites. Herein, we develop a facile topo-conversion strategy for fabricating hollow mesoporous metal-nitrogen-carbon SACs with enhanced diffusion for catalysis. Several hollow mesoporous metal-nitrogen-carbon SACs, including Co, Ni, Mn and Cu, are successfully fabricated by this strategy. Taking hollow mesoporous cobalt-nitrogen-carbon SACs as a proof-of-concept, diffusion and kinetic experiments demonstrate the enhanced diffusion of hollow mesoporous structures compared to the solid ones, which alleviates the bottleneck of poor mass transport in catalysis, especially involving larger molecules. Impressively, the combination of superior intrinsic activity from Co-N₄ sites and the enhanced diffusion from the hollow mesoporous nanoarchitecture significantly improves the catalytic performance of the oxidative coupling of aniline and its derivatives.

Preparation of Hierarchically Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks via Slow Chemical Vapor Etching for CO2 Cycloaddition

Hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (HP-MOFs) are a class of promising functional material with micropores, mesopores, and/or macropores, which can address the issue of slow mass transfer and less exposed active sites for primitive microporous MOFs. Despite many attempts that have been achieved through a variety of techniques to date, there is still a myriad of spaces that urgently need to be exploited. In this work, we report the novel synthesis of HP-MOFs via slow chemical steam etching. The preparation process can be subtly achieved using water vapor as an etchant; meanwhile, the addition of ethanol into the vapor atmosphere is carried out because it can stabilize the MOF framework well with its hydrophobic alkane tails, thereby slowing the etching rate toward MOFs, successfully realizing the controllable etching manner of MOF components. Furthermore, the joint influence of the water content and etching temperature on the MOF backbone structure etched has thus been investigated in detail. Impressively, we can harvest desired HP-MOFs with the retained crystalline structure at a water content of 50% and an etching temperature of 120 °C. The resulting HK-120/50 product etched exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability in [2 + 3] cycloaddition of CO₂ than pristine MOF, which can be attributed to the more exposure of active sites and the acceleration of mass transportation across the entire MOF skeleton. Noteworthy, the strategy proposed in this study may be extended to other HP-MOF construction systems due to the lability of most MOFs toward the chemical water vapor.

Semicrystalline SrTiO3 -Decorated Anatase TiO2 Nanopie as Heterostructure for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The coupling of TiO₂ and SrTiO₃ through elaborate bandgap engineering can provide synergies for highly efficient photocatalysts. To further improve the separation between photogenerated electrons and holes, a nano-heterostructured combination of semicrystalline SrTiO₃ (S-SrTiO₃ ) and anatase TiO₂ nanoparticles is designed, and an optimized interface is achieved between uniformly grown S-SrTiO₃ and metal organic framework (MOF)-derived anatase TiO₂ through a controlled hydrothermal process. Besides tuning of the bandgap and broadening of the absorption spectral range, S-SrTiO₃ particles alleviate charge carrier recombination benefiting from the coupling of the semicrystalline SrTiO₃ around the interface. Additionally, highly dispersed S-SrTiO₃ on TiO₂ provides a good spatial distribution of active sites and the abundant carbon remained from MOF may reduce charge transport resistance. Moreover, the rapid transfer within the nano-heterostructure promotes the separation of the photogenerated charge carriers. With the above predominant architecture, when used as a photocatalyst, the as-synthesized S-SrTiO₃ /TiO₂ heterostructure exhibits exceptionally high photocatalytic performance of 13 005 µmol h^-1 g^-1 for H₂ production, exceeding most oxide-based photocatalysts reported. This study might provide mechanistic insights into a new perspective for the design and preparation of photocatalysts with novel structure and enhanced catalysis activity.

Pillar[5]arene-Integrated Three-Dimensional Framework Polymers for Macrocycle-Induced Size-Selective Catalysis

Size-selective catalysis is of key importance in the conversion of crude oil or biomass. Here, we fabricate three pillar[5]arene-integrated porous organic polymers with three-dimensional (3D) network structures using 3D cross-linkers. The resulting polymers possess a high surface-to-mass ratio and exhibit exceptional size-selective catalysis in Knoevenagel condensation reactions. In addition, a mechanistic study indicates that the size-selective catalysis is due to the host-guest interaction between pillar[5]arene and substrates. This study suggests that macrocycle-containing polymers could be a promising candidate for size-selective catalysis.

Tailored Linker Defects in UiO-67 with High Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer toward Efficient Photoreduction of CO2

Defect engineering can be used as a potential tool to activate metal-organic frameworks by regulating the pore structure, electronic properties, and catalytic activity. Herein, linker defects were effectively controlled by adjusting the amount of formic acid, and UiO-67 with different CO₂ reduction capabilities was obtained. Among them, UiO-67-200 had the highest ability to selectively reduce CO₂ to CO (12.29 μmol g^-1 h^-1). On the one hand, the results based on time-resolved photoluminescence decay curves and photochemical experiments revealed that UiO-67-200 had the highest charge separation efficiency. On the other hand, the linker defects affected the band structure of UiO-67 by changing the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) based on the density functional theory and UV-vis spectra. Hence, the proper linker defects enhanced the ligand-to-metal charge transfer process by promoting the transfer of electrons between the highest occupied molecular orbital and LUMO. Additionally, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectra and ¹³CO₂ labeling experiments also indicated that COOH* was an important intermediate for CO formation and that CO originated from the photoreduction of CO₂.

Molecular Cleavage of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Application to Energy Storage and Conversion

The physicochemical properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) significantly depend on composition, topology, and porosity, which can be tuned via synthesis. In addition to a classic direct synthesis, postsynthesis modulations of MOFs, including ion exchange, installation, and destruction, can significantly expand the application. Because of a limitation of the qualitative hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) theory, posttreatment permits regulation of MOF structure by cleaving chemical bonds at the molecular level. Here, methods of coordination bond scission to tailor the structure are critically appraised and the application to energy storage and conversion is assessed. MOF structures synthesized by molecular-level coordination bond cleavage are described and the corresponding MOFs for electrocatalysis and renewable battery applications are evaluated. Significant emphasis is placed on various coordination bond cleavage to tune properties, including chemical groups, electronic structures, and morphologies. The review concludes with a critical perspective on practical application, together with challenges and future outlook for this emerging field.

Unlocking active metal site of Ti-MOF for boosted heterogeneous catalysis via a facile coordinative reconstruction

Constructing sophisticated hollow structure and exposing more metal sites in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can not only enhance their catalytic performance but also endow them with new functions. Herein, we present a facile coordinative reconstruction strategy to transform Ti-MOF polyhedron into nanosheet-assembled hollow structure with a large amount of exposed metal sites. Importantly, the reconstruction process relies on the esterification reaction between the organic solvent, i.e. ethanol and the carboxylic acid ligand, allowing the conversion of MOF without the addition of any other modulators and/or surfactants. Moreover, the surface and internal structure of the reconstructed MOF can be well tuned via altering the conversion time. Impressively, the reconstructed MOF exhibits ∼5.1-fold rate constant compared to the pristine one in an important desulfurization reaction for clean fuels production, i.e. the oxidation of dibenzothiophene.

Nanoconfinement and mass transport in metal-organic frameworks

The ubiquity of metal-organic frameworks in recent scientific literature underscores their highly versatile nature. MOFs have been developed for use in a wide array of applications, including: sensors, catalysis, separations, drug delivery, and electrochemical processes. Often overlooked in the discussion of MOF-based materials is the mass transport of guest molecules within the pores and channels. Given the wide distribution of pore sizes, linker functionalization, and crystal sizes, molecular diffusion within MOFs can be highly dependent on the MOF-guest system. In this review, we discuss the major factors that govern the mass transport of molecules through MOFs at both the intracrystalline and intercrystalline scale; provide an overview of the experimental and computational methods used to measure guest diffusivity within MOFs; and highlight the relevance of mass transfer in the applications of MOFs in electrochemical systems, separations, and heterogeneous catalysis.

Significant improvement of the lithium-ion conductivity of solid-state electrolytes by fabricating large pore volume hollow ZIF-8

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) emerging as a type of functional material have been widely used in electrochemical energy storage and conversion in recent years. Hollow MOFs with a large pore volume and surface area can increase the contact area between active materials and electrolytes, thus improving the ionic conductivity of the materials. Herein, we obtained a kind of hollow MOF (ZIF-8) using carboxylate-terminated polystyrene microspheres as exterior templates. Transmission electron microscopy and N₂ adsorption/desorption analysis revealed that the average cavity diameter of hollow ZIF-8 is 1 μm. Moreover, hollow ZIF-8 exhibits excellent electrochemical quality with an ionic conductivity of 7.36 × 10^-4 S cm^-1, a lithium ion transference number of 0.83 and an activation energy of 0.15 eV in a wide stable electrochemical window of 2.0-6.5 V at room temperature. Compared with the traditional non-hollow ZIF-8, the electrochemical performance has been improved obviously. Consequently, our strategy of fabrication of large pore volume hollow MOFs provides a new perspective for the development of solid electrolytes with excellent lithium ionic conductivity.

Defect-Rich Hierarchical Porous UiO-66(Zr) for Tunable Phosphate Removal

The introduction of defects into hierarchical porous metal-organic frameworks (HP-MOFs) is of vital significance to boost their adsorption performance. Herein, an advanced template-assisted strategy has been developed to fine-tune the phosphate adsorption performance of HP-MOFs by dictating the type and number of defects in HP-UiO-66(Zr). To achieve this, monocarboxylic acids of varying chain lengths have been employed as template molecules to fabricate an array of defect-rich HP-UiO-66(Zr) derivatives following removal of the template. The as-prepared HP-UiO-66(Zr) exhibits a higher sorption capacity and faster sorption rate compared to the pristine UiO-66(Zr). Particularly, the octanoic acid-modulated UiO-66(Zr) exhibits a high adsorption capacity of 186.6 mg P/g and an intraparticle diffusion rate of 6.19 mg/g·min^0.5, which are 4.8 times and 1.9 times higher than those of pristine UiO-66(Zr), respectively. The results reveal that defect sites play a critical role in boosting the phosphate uptake performance, which is further confirmed by various advanced characterizations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the important role of defects in not only providing additional sorption sites but also reducing the sorption energy between HP-UiO-66(Zr) and phosphate. In addition, the hierarchical pores in HP-UiO-66(Zr) can accelerate the phosphate diffusion toward the active sorption sites. This work presents a promising route to tailor the adsorption performance of MOF-based adsorbents via defect engineering.

Large-Scale Production of Hierarchically Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks by a Reflux-Assisted Post-Synthetic Ligand Substitution Strategy

The mass production of hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (HP-MOFs) with adjustable morphology and size as well as retained crystallinity is highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, we have developed a versatile post-synthetic ligand substitution (PSLS) strategy to convert typical microporous MOFs and even their composites to HP-MOFs and their composites at a 10 g level and beyond in a simple reflux system. The resulting HP-MOFs feature intrinsic micropores and abundant defective mesopores, which greatly facilitate the transport and activation of large substrates for stable and efficient heterogeneous catalysis. Furthermore, the presence of defective mesopores in the HP-MOF composites improves activity and selectivity for large molecule-involved one-pot tandem catalysis. This strategy opens a new door to fast, facile, general, and scale-up production of HP-MOFs and related composites for expanding applications of conventional microporous MOF-based materials.

Preparation of ZIF@ADH/NAD-MSN/LDH Core Shell Nanocomposites for the Enhancement of Coenzyme Catalyzed Double Enzyme Cascade

The field of enzyme cascades in limited microscale or nanoscale environments has undergone a quick growth and attracted increasing interests in the field of rapid development of systems chemistry. In this study, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) immobilized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) were successfully immobilized on the zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). This immobilized product was named ZIF@ADH/NAD-MSN/LDH, and the effect of the multi-enzyme cascade was studied by measuring the catalytic synthesis of lactic acid. The loading efficiency of the enzyme in the in-situ co-immobilization method reached 92.65%. The synthesis rate of lactic acid was increased to 70.10%, which was about 2.82 times that of the free enzyme under the optimal conditions (40 °C, pH = 8). Additionally, ZIF@ADH/NAD-MSN/LDH had experimental stability (71.67% relative activity after four experiments) and storage stability (93.45% relative activity after three weeks of storage at 4 °C; 76.89% relative activity after incubation in acetonitrile-aqueous solution for 1 h; 27.42% relative activity after incubation in 15% N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) solution for 1 h). In summary, in this paper, the cyclic regeneration of coenzymes was achieved, and the reaction efficiency of the multi-enzyme biocatalytic cascade was improved due to the reduction of substrate diffusion.

A nano-sized Cu-MOF with high peroxidase-like activity and its potential application in colorimetric detection of H2O2 and glucose

Peroxidase widely exists in nature and can be applied for the diagnosis and detection of H₂O₂, glucose, ascorbic acid and other aspects. However, the natural peroxidase has low stability and its catalytic efficiency is easily affected by external conditions. In this work, a copper-based metal–organic framework (Cu-MOF) was prepared by hydrothermal method, and characterized by means of XRD, SEM, FT-IR and EDS. The synthesized Cu-MOF material showed high peroxidase-like activity and could be utilized to catalyze the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPDA) and 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H₂O₂. The steady-state kinetics experiments of the oxidation of OPDA and TMB catalyzed by Cu-MOF were performed, and the kinetic parameters were obtained by linear least-squares fitting to Lineweaver–Burk plot. The results indicated that the affinity of Cu-MOF towards TMB and OPDA was close to that of the natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The as-prepared Cu-MOF can be applied for colorimetric detection of H₂O₂ and glucose with wide linear ranges of 5 to 300 μM and 50 to 500 μM for H₂O₂ and glucose, respectively. Furthermore, the specificity of detection of glucose was compared with other sugar species interference such as sucrose, lactose and maltose. In addition, the detection of ascorbic acid and sodium thiosulfate was also performed upon the inhibition of TMB oxidation. Based on the high catalytic activity, affinity and wide linear range, the as-prepared Cu-MOF may be used for artificial enzyme mimics in the fields of catalysis, biosensors, medicines and food industry.

A Cu-MOF with high peroxidase-like activity was prepared and could be used for colorimetric detection of H₂O₂ and glucose with high selectivity and good linear range (50–500 μM).

Dimensional Reduction of Lewis Acidic Metal-Organic Frameworks for Multicomponent Reactions

Owing to hindered diffusions, the application of porous catalytic materials has been limited to relatively simple organic transformations with small substrates. Herein we report a dimensional reduction strategy to construct a two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF), Zr₆OTf-BTB, with 96% accessible Lewis acidic sites as probed by the bulky Lewis base pivalonitrile. With nearly free substrate accessibility, Zr₆OTf-BTB outperformed two three-dimensional MOF counterparts of similar Lewis acidity (Zr₆OTf-BPDC and Zr₆OTf-BTC) in catalyzing sterically hindered multicomponent reactions (MCRs) for the construction of tetrahydroquinoline and aziridine carboxylate derivatives with high turnover numbers (TONs). Zr₆OTf-BTB was also superior to the homogeneous benchmark Sc(OTf)₃ with nearly 14 times higher TON and 9 times longer catalyst lifetime. Furthermore, the topology-activity relationships in these Zr-based Lewis acidic MOFs were rationalized by comparing their Lewis acidity, numbers of Lewis acidic sites, and sterically accessible Lewis acidic sites. Zr₆OTf-BTB was successfully used to construct several bioactive molecules via MCRs with excellent efficiency. This dimensional reduction strategy should allow the development of other MOF catalysts for synthetically useful and complicated organic transformations.

Metal-organic frameworks as catalytic selectivity regulators for organic transformations

Selective organic transformations using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts have been an intriguing but challenging research topic in both the chemistry and materials communities. Analogous to the reaction specificity achieved in enzyme pockets, MOFs are also powerful platforms for regulating the catalytic selectivity via engineering their catalytic microenvironments, such as metal node alternation, ligand functionalization, pore decoration, topology variation and others. In this review, we provide a comprehensive introduction and discussion about the role of MOFs played in regulating and even boosting the size-, shape-, chemo-, regio- and more appealing stereo-selectivity in organic transformations. We hope that it will be instructive for researchers in this field to rationally design, conveniently prepare and elaborately functionalize MOFs or MOF-based composites for the synthesis of high value-added organic chemicals with significantly improved selectivity.

Multi-shelled hollow layered double hydroxides with enhanced performance for the oxygen evolution reaction

Hollow materials with a sophisticated structure are promising for various applications with boosted performances and innovative properties. Herein, we report an in situ transformation strategy using multi-layered MOFs as templates to fabricate multi-shelled hollow NiZnCoFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs), which outperformed the double- and single-shelled hollow LDHs and commercial IrO₂ in the oxygen evolution reaction.

Encapsulation of Ultrafine Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticles within Multichamber Carbon Spheres by a Two-Step Double-Solvent Strategy for High-Performance Catalysts

Carbon-encapsulated metal-organic framework (MOF) composite is one kind of emerging new catalyst with high efficiency and has gained much attention. However, for this kind of composite catalyst, the key to improving its catalytic activity and durability is to realize the effective dispersion of MOF nanoparticles (NPs) and enhance the interaction between MOF NPs and the carbon matrix, which remain a significant challenge. Herein, ultrafine MOF NPs within multichamber carbon spheres (MOF@MCCS), for the first time, have been rationally synthesized by a two-step double-solvent strategy for high-performance catalysts. The precise loading of guest MOFs can be achieved by adjusting the multichamber structure and calcination extent of the multichamber polymer (MCP), and the particle size of MOFs can be as low as 13.2 nm. Due to the formation of abundant carbon defects in the pyrolysis process of MCPs, the special structure and synergistic effect make the material exhibit higher catalytic activity and durability. More importantly, this method is universal and can be extended to different MOF systems. The two-step double-solvent strategy not only prepares a unique structure of MOF@MCCS-type host-guest-encapsulated catalysts but also provides a new idea for the design of high-efficiency catalysts with better performance and higher durability.

Nanocage-Shaped Co3- x Zrx O4 Solid-Solution Supports Loaded with Pt Nanoparticles as Effective Catalysts for the Enhancement of Toluene Oxidation

Nanocage-shaped Co_{3- x} Zr_x O₄ solid-solution supports and the corresponding platinum loaded nanocomposites, yPt/Co_{3- x} Zr_x O₄ (x =0.27, 0.50, 0.69; y = 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 wt.%), are successfully fabricated via a Cu₂ O nanocube hard template method and a glycol reduction method, respectively. The hollow nanocage structures obviously improve surface areas; moreover, the Zr doping forms the Co_{3- x} Zr_x O₄ solid-solution supports, and the corresponding yPt/Co_{3- x} Zr_x O₄ catalysts promote the enhancement of catalytic performance. Catalytic activity toward toluene combustion is enhanced for the 2.0 wt% Pt/Co_2.73 Zr_0.27 O₄ catalyst. The catalysts are characterized using multiple techniques. Pt nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed across the Co_2.73 Zr_0.27 O₄ nanocage surface. The 2.0 wt% Pt/Co_2.73 Zr_0.27 O₄ catalyst exhibits the highest catalytic activity among all the samples and demonstrates good stability, with 90% toluene conversion obtained at a temperature of 165 °C. The same catalyst accomplishes full toluene oxidation at 180 °C, at a weight hourly space velocity of 36 000 mL h^-1 g^-1 . The apparent activation energy (E_a ) over the yPt/Co_2.73 Zr_0.27 O₄ samples are significantly lower than those over the Co_{3- x} Zr_x O₄ supports, with the 2.0 wt% Pt/Co_2.73 Zr_0.27 O₄ catalyst exhibiting the lowest E_a value. These findings demonstrate the potential of the 2.0 wt% Pt/Co_2.73 Zr_0.27 O₄ catalyst as a promising catalyst toward atmospheric toluene removal.
