Amphiphilic Covalent Organic Framework Nanoparticles for Pickering Emulsion Catalysis with Size Selectivity

Exploiting advanced amphiphilic solid catalysts is crucial to the development of Pickering emulsion catalysis. Herein, covalent organic framework (COF) nanoparticles constructed with highly hydrophobic monomers as linkers were found to show superior amphiphilicity and they were then developed as a new class of solid emulsifiers for Pickering emulsion catalysis. Employing amphiphilic COFs as solid emulsifiers, Pickering emulsions with controllable emulsion type and droplet sizes were obtained. COF materials have also been demonstrated to serve as porous surface coatings to replace traditional surface modifications for stabilizing Pickering emulsions. After implanting Pd nanoparticles into amphiphilic COFs, the obtained catalyst displayed a 3.9 times higher catalytic efficiency than traditional amphiphilic solid catalysts with surface modifications in the biphasic oxidation reaction of alcohols. Such an enhanced activity was resulted from the high surface area and regular porous structure of COFs. More importantly, because of their tunable pore diameters, Pickering emulsion catalysis with remarkable size selectivity was achieved. This work is the first example that COFs were applied in Pickering emulsion catalysis, providing a platform for exploring new frontiers of Pickering emulsion catalysis.

In Situ Engineering of Conducting Polymer Nanocomposites at Liquid/Liquid Interfaces: A Perspective on Fundamentals to Technological Significance

The conducting polymers have continuously been hybridized with their counterparts to overcome the intrinsic functional limitations compared to the metallic or inorganic analogs. Remarkably, the liquid/liquid interface-assisted methods represent an efficient and facile route for developing fully tunable metamaterials for various applications. The spontaneous adsorption of nanostructures at a quasi-two-dimensional interface is energetically favorable due to the reduction in interfacial tension, interfacial area, and interfacial energy (Helmholtz free energy). This Perspective highlights the fundamentals of nanostructure adsorption leading to hierarchical architecture generation at the interface from an experimentalist's point of view. Thereafter, the essential applications of the conducting polymer/nanocomposites synthesized at the interface emphasize the capability of the interface to tune functional materials. This Perspective also summarizes the future challenges and the use of the known fundamental aspects in overcoming the functional limitations of polymer/nanomaterial composites and also provides some future research directions.

Enzymatic Synthesis of Structured Lipids Enriched with Medium- and Long-Chain Triacylglycerols via Pickering Emulsion-Assisted Interfacial Catalysis: A Preliminary Exploration

Medium- and long-chain triacylglycerol (MLCT), as a novel functional lipid, is valuable due to its special nutritional properties. Its low content in natural resources and inefficient synthesis during preparation have limited its practical applications. In this study, we developed an effective Pickering emulsion interfacial catalysis system (PE system) for the enzymatic synthesis of MLCT by trans-esterification. Lipase NS 40086 served simultaneously as a catalyst and a solid emulsifier to stabilize the Pickering emulsion. Benefitting from the sufficient oil-water interface, the obtained PE system exhibited outstanding catalytic efficiency, achieving 77.5% of MLCT content within 30 min, 26% higher than that of a water-free system. The Km value (0.259 mM) and activation energy (14.45 kJ mol-1) were 6.8-fold and 1.6-fold lower than those of the water-free system, respectively. The kinetic parameters as well as the molecular dynamics simulation and the tunnel analysis implied that the oil-water interface enhanced the binding between substrate and lipase and thus boosted catalytic efficiency. The conformational changes in the lipase were further explored by FT-IR. This method could give a novel strategy for enhancing lipase activity and the design of efficient catalytic systems to produce added-value lipids. This work will open a new methodology for the enzymatic synthesis of structured lipids.

Enhanced Biphasic Reactions in Amphiphilic Silica Mesopores

In this study, we investigated the effect of the pore volume and mesopore size of surface-active catalytic organosilicas on the genesis of particle-stabilized (Pickering) emulsions for the dodecanal/ethylene glycol system and their reactivity for the acid-catalyzed biphasic acetalization reaction. To this aim, we functionalized a series of fumed silica superparticles (size 100-300 nm) displaying an average mesopore size in the range of 11-14 nm and variable mesopore volume, with a similar surface density of octyl and propylsulfonic acid groups. The modified silica superparticles were characterized in detail using different techniques, including acid-base titration, thermogravimetric analysis, TEM, and dynamic light scattering. The pore volume of the particles impacts their self-assembly and coverage at the dodecanal/ethylene glycol (DA/EG) interface. This affects the stability and the average droplet size of emulsions and conditions of the available interfacial surface area for reaction. The maximum DA-EG productivity is observed for A200 super-SiNPs with a pore volume of 0.39 cm3·g-1 with an interfacial coverage by particles lower than 1 (i.e., submonolayer). Using dissipative particle dynamics and all-atom grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we unveil a stabilizing role of the pore volume of porous silica superparticles for generating emulsions and local micromixing of immiscible dodecanal and ethylene glycol, allowing fast and efficient solvent-free acetalization in the presence of Pickering emulsions. The micromixing level is interrelated to the adsorption energy of self-assembled particles at the DA/EG interface.

Preparation and Emulsifying Properties of Carbon-Based Pickering Emulsifier

Water is increasingly being used as a solvent in place of organic solvent in order to meet the demand for green chemical synthesis. Nevertheless, many of the reaction substrates are organic matter, which have low water solubility, resulting in a low reaction interface and limiting the development of organic-water biphasic systems. A surfactant is typically added to the two-phase system to form an emulsion to increase the contact area between the organic phase and the water. Compared to ordinary emulsion stabilized with the surfactant, Pickering emulsion offers better adhesion resistance, biocompatibility, and environmental friendliness. It possesses unrivaled benefits as an emulsifier and catalyst in a two-phase interfacial catalysis system (PIC). In this study, the amine group (NNDB) was employed to alter the surface of graphene oxide (GO). A stable Pickering emulsion was created by adsorbing GO-NNDB on the toluene–water interface. It was determined that the emulsion system had good stability by analyzing digital photographs and microscope images of droplets at various temperatures, and fluorescence microscopy images of emulsion droplets created by both newly added and recovered emulsifiers. This work provided the groundwork for future applications of Pickering emulsion in interfacial catalysis.

Boosting Catalytic Selectivity through a Precise Spatial Control of Catalysts at Pickering Droplet Interfaces

Exploration of new methodologies to tune catalytic selectivity is a long-sought goal in catalytic community. In this work, oil-water interfaces of Pickering emulsions are developed to effectively regulate catalytic selectivity of hydrogenation reactions, which was achieved via a precise control of the spatial distribution of metal nanoparticles at the droplet interfaces. It was found that Pd nanoparticles located in the inner interfacial layer of Pickering droplets exhibited a significantly enhanced selectivity for p-chloroaniline (up to 99.6%) in the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene in comparison to those in the outer interfacial layer (63.6%) in pure water (68.5%) or in pure organic solvents (46.8%). Experimental and theoretical investigations indicated that such a remarkable interfacial microregion-dependent catalytic selectivity was attributed to the microenvironments of the coexistence of water and organic solvent at the droplet interfaces, which could provide unique interfacial hydrogen-bonding interactions and solvation effects so as to alter the adsorption patterns of p-chloronitrobenzene and p-chloroaniline on the Pd nanoparticles, thereby avoiding the unwanted contact of C-Cl bonds with the metal surfaces. Our strategy of precise spatial control of catalysts at liquid-liquid interfaces and the unprecedented interfacial effect reported here not only provide new insights into the liquid-liquid interfacial reactions but also open an avenue to boost catalytic selectivity.

A Liquid-Liquid-Solid System to Manipulate the Cascade Reaction for Highly Selective Electrosynthesis of Aldehyde

Electrocatalytic synthesis of aldehydes from alcohols exhibits unique superiorities as a promising technology, in which cascade reactions are involved. However, the cascade reactions are severely limited by the low selectivity resulting from the peroxidation of aldehydes in a traditional liquid-solid system. Herein, we report a novel liquid-liquid-solid system to regulate the selectivity of benzyl alcohol electrooxidation. The selectivity of benzaldehyde increases 200-fold from 0.4 % to 80.4 % compared with the liquid-solid system at a high current density of 136 mA cm^-2 , which is the highest one up to date. In the tri-phase system, the benzaldehyde peroxidation is suppressed efficiently, with the conversion of benzaldehyde being decreased from 87.6 % to 3.8 %. The as-produced benzaldehyde can be in situ extracted to toluene phase and separated from the electrolyte to get purified benzaldehyde. This strategy provides an efficient way to efficiently enhance the selectivity of electrocatalytic cascade reactions.

Lipase-Entrapped Colloidosomes with Tunable Positioning at the Oil-Water Interface for Pickering Emulsion-Enhanced Biocatalysis

Pickering interfacial biocatalysis (PIB) paves the way for efficient enzymatic catalysis in the biphasic system. However, the Pickering interfacial biocatalysts located on the oil-water interface still face the inevitable deactivation when one of the phases contains the reactant that inactivates the enzyme. Herein, the positioning of lipase-entrapped colloidosomes (LECs) at the emulsion interface is rationally designed by physically tuning the wettability, which allows LECs to protrude into the selected phase to protect the lipase away from the damage of the reactant. As a proof of concept, LECs with different positioning at the interface are used as Pickering interfacial biocatalysts to produce biodiesel by esterification of lauric acid and methanol. Impressively, the LECs that protrude into the oil phase possess an optimal catalytic performance to protect more lipases away from the damage of the reactant of short-chain alcohol, which shows an 8.18-fold enhancement in specific activity relative to the free lipase, reach a biodiesel yield of 80.37% after 8 h, and retain the 96.44% of relative activity after 10 cycles. This study provides a novel and robust platform for Pickering emulsion-enhanced biocatalysis.

Dynamic Liquid-Liquid Interface: Applying a Spinning Interfacial Microreactor to Actively Converge Biphasic Reactants for the Enhanced Interfacial Reaction

A liquid-liquid interfacial reaction combines reactants with large polarity disparity to achieve greener and more efficient chemistry that is otherwise challenging in traditional single-phase systems. However, current interfacial approaches suffer from the need for a large amount of solvent/reactant/emulsifier and poor reaction performance arising from intrinsic thermodynamic constraints. Herein, we achieve an efficient interfacial reaction by creating a magnetic-responsive, microscale liquid-liquid interface and exploit its dynamic spinning motion to generate vortex-like hydrodynamic flows that rapidly converge biphasic reactants to the point-of-reaction. Notably, the spinning of this functional interface at 800 rpm boosts the reaction efficiency and its apparent equilibrium constant by > 500-fold and 10⁵-fold, respectively, higher than conventional methods that utilize bulk and/or non-dynamic liquid interfaces, even with external mechanical stirring. By driving reaction equilibrium toward favorable product formation, our unique design offers enormous opportunities to realize efficient multiphasic reactions crucial for diverse applications in chemical synthesis, environmental remediation, and even molecular recycling.

Interfacial tension driven adsorption of MnO2 nanoparticles at the liquid/liquid interface to tailor ultra-thin polypyrrole sheets

An emerging aspect of research is designing and developing fully tunable metamaterials for various applications with fluid interfaces. Liquid/liquid interface-assisted methods represent an efficient and facile route for synthesizing two-dimensional (2-D) thin films of potential materials. The underlying mechanism behind thin film formation at the liquid/liquid interface involves the preferential adsorption of nano-sized particles at the interface to minimize high interfacial tension. Here, a water/chloroform interface-assisted method is employed for the one-pot synthesis of highly crystalline polypyrrole/manganese dioxide (PPy/MnO₂) sheets. The temporal evolution in the dynamic interfacial tension (from 32 mN m^-1 to 17 mN m^-1) observed in pendant drop tensiometry proved the preferential adsorption of MnO₂ atttached PPy oligomers at the water/chloroform interface. An ultra-thin sheet-like morphology and uniform distribution of ∼6 nm highly crystalline MnO₂ nanoparticles are evidenced by transmission and atomic force microscopy techniques. The predominance of interfacial polymerization in retaining the electrochemical activity of the PPy/MnO₂ sheets is elucidated for the electrochemical detection of nicotine. This study opens a new avenue for the realization of ultra-thin sheets of polymer-nanomaterial hybrids, enabling applications ranging from new classes of sensors to optics.

Pickering Emulsion Catalysis: Interfacial Chemistry, Catalyst Design, Challenges, and Perspectives

Pickering emulsions are particle-stabilized surfactant-free dispersions composed of two immiscible liquid phases, and emerge as attractive catalysis platform to surpass traditional technique barrier in some cases. In this review, we have comprehensively summarized the development and the catalysis applications of Pickering emulsions since the pioneering work in 2010. The explicit mechanism for Pickering emulsions will be initially discussed and clarified. Then, summarization is given to the design strategy of amphiphilic emulsion catalysts in two categories of intrinsic and extrinsic amphiphilicity. The progress of the unconventional catalytic reactions in Pickering emulsion is further described, especially for the polarity/solubility difference-driven phase segregation, "smart" emulsion reaction system, continuous flow catalysis, and Pickering interfacial biocatalysis. Challenges and future trends for the development of Pickering emulsion catalysis are finally outlined.

A surfactant-free approach: Novel one-step ultrasonic nebulizer spray method to generate amphiphilic Janus particles

HYPOTHESIS

A solvent evaporation-induced phase separation method, which is based on the preferential partitioning of two or more immiscible materials after solvent evaporation on providing heat, has been one of the main strategies for synthesis of Janus particles (JPs). Considering this approach, it should be possible to synthesize surfactant free-JPs in continuous flow by the ultrasonic nebulizer spray method.

EXPERIMENTS

Two polymers, polystyrene and polymethylmethacrylate, were dissolved in dichloromethane, and droplets of a precursor solution generated by an ultrasonic nebulizer were then conveyed through a borosilicate glass cylinder with two heating zones. The solvent evaporation-induced phase separation occurred in a single flow process, which resulted in the preferential partitioning of two incompatible polymers in the droplets, leading to the formation of the spherical bicompartmental JPs.

FINDINGS

The successful fabrication of spherical JPs was observed at high polymer concentrations (1.5 and 2.0 wt%), and at elevated temperature (40-75 °C). The fluorescent compartmentalization of JPs was confirmed. Furthermore, the interfacial arrangement of JPs at oil-water interface was studied. A detailed explanation of theoretical prediction of interfacial configurations of JPs was provided. Lastly, the generated JPs were proved as Pickering stabilizers at the oil-water interface.

Engineering hybrid microgels as particulate emulsifiers for reversible Pickering emulsions

Thermo-responsive microgels are unique stabilizers for stimuli-sensitive Pickering emulsions that can be switched between the state of emulsification and demulsification by changing the temperature. However, directly temperature-triggering the phase inversion of microgel-stabilized emulsions remains a great challenge. Here, a hybrid poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based microgel has now been successfully fabricated with tunable wettability from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity in a controlled manner. Engineered microgels are synthesized from an inverse emulsion stabilized with hydrophobic silica nanoparticles, and the swelling-induced feature can make the resultant microgel behave like either hydrophilic or hydrophobic colloids. Remarkably, the phase inversion of such microgel-stabilized Pickering emulsions can be in situ regulated by temperature change. Moreover, the engineered microgels were capable of stabilizing water-in-oil Pickering emulsions and encapsulation of enzymes for interfacial bio-catalysis, as well as rapid cargo release triggered by phase inversion.

Metal-Nanoparticles-Loaded Ultrathin g-C3N4 Nanosheets at Liquid-Liquid Interfaces for Enhanced Biphasic Catalysis

Exploiting new interface-active solid catalysts is crucial to construct efficient Pickering emulsion systems for biphasic catalysis. In this work, ultrathin g-C₃N₄ nanosheets (g-C₃N₄-NSs) were developed as a new solid emulsifier to directly position catalytic sites at oil-water interfaces for improving the reaction efficiency of a biphasic reaction. Exemplified by a metal-involved biphasic reaction of nitroarenes reduction, the developed Pd/g-C₃N₄-NSs catalyst with Pd nanoparticles loaded on the surface of g-C₃N₄-NSs exhibited excellent activity with a catalytic efficiency of 1220 h^-1. Such activity was 4.2 and 17.9 times higher than those of Pd/g-C₃N₄-bulk and the ordinary Pd/C₈-SiO₂ catalyst, respectively. Also, in the biphasic oxidation reaction of alcohols, Pd/g-C₃N₄-NSs achieved a 2.3-fold activity enhancement. It was found by analyzing the solidified emulsion droplets that the Pd/g-C₃N₄-NSs catalyst was parallelly assembled at the oil-water interfaces. Because of the ultrathin thickness of g-C₃N₄-NSs, such a unique interfacial assembly behavior allowed precise positioning of Pd nanoparticles at the oil-water interfaces. As a result, the oil-soluble reactant could directly react with the water-soluble reactant at the oil-water interface hosting the Pd nanoparticles. Our elaborately designed reaction interface was believed to substantially avoid the diffusion barrier between oil-soluble and water-soluble reactants and then to significantly enhance the reactivity of biphasic reactions. This work highlights the importance of the interfacial location of catalytic sites in biphasic catalysis.

Multiphase Microreactors Based on Liquid-Liquid and Gas-Liquid Dispersions Stabilized by Colloidal Catalytic Particles

Pickering emulsions, foams, bubbles, and marbles are dispersions of two immiscible liquids or of a liquid and a gas stabilized by surface‐active colloidal particles. These systems can be used for engineering liquid–liquid–solid and gas–liquid–solid microreactors for multiphase reactions. They constitute original platforms for reengineering multiphase reactors towards a higher degree of sustainability. This Review provides a systematic overview on the recent progress of liquid–liquid and gas–liquid dispersions stabilized by solid particles as microreactors for engineering eco‐efficient reactions, with emphasis on biobased reagents. Physicochemical driving parameters, challenges, and strategies to (de)stabilize dispersions for product recovery/catalyst recycling are discussed. Advanced concepts such as cascade and continuous flow reactions, compartmentalization of incompatible reagents, and multiscale computational methods for accelerating particle discovery are also addressed.
