A Stable Zn-MOF for Photocatalytic Csp3–H Oxidation: Vinyl Double Bonds Boosting Electron Transfer and Enhanced Oxygen Activation

Eosin Y Post-Decorated Metal-Organic Framework as a Selectivity Regulator for the Alcohols Oxidation

The selective oxidation of alcohols into aldehydes is a basic and significant procedure, with great potential for scientific research and industrial applications. However, as an important factor in the C(sp3)-H activation process, high selectivity is generally difficult to achieve due to the fact that the more easily activated properties of aldehydes are compared to alcohols. Herein, by the ingenious decoration of eosin Y into a Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF-808), EY@MOF-808 was prepared as a selectivity regulator for the aerobic oxidation of the benzyl alcohols into corresponding aldehydes, possessing applicability for the benzylic alcohols with various substituents. By anchoring eosin Y on Zr6O4(OH)4 clusters of MOF-808 and maintaining open metal nodes with selective binding effects, the benzyl alcohol substrates were selectively coordinated to the unsaturated metal clusters adjacent to eosin Y, which ensured that the excited eosin Y rapidly activated substrates to generate carbon radicals by the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process. The rapid electron transfer (ET) simultaneously produced reactive oxygen species (O2•-) and then a combination of both to further promote the generation of benzaldehydes. The weak interaction of benzaldehydes with the skeleton allowed it to dissociate rapidly, thus preventing overoxidation. Under the catalysis of EY@MOF-808, the selectivity of various benzaldehydes was more than 99%. In contrast, eosin Y gave only benzoic acid products under the same conditions, which demonstrated the superiority of regulatory selectivity of EY@MOF-808. Taking advantage of the heterogeneity of the MOF, EY@MOF-808 was recycled four times without a decrease in its selectivity and avoided the quenching effect of eosin Y. The organic functional units postdecorated MOF-based photocatalyst strategy exhibits a promising new perspective approach to sustainably regulating the selectivity of inert oxidation.

A Covalent Organic Nanoribbon: Preparation, Single-Crystal Structure with Chinese Luban Lock Configuration, and Photocatalytic Behavior

The multiple mortise-and-tenon joint parts are the core factors to provide the structural stability and diversity of Chinese Luban locks; however, constructing such structures is very challenging. Herein, single crystals of a covalent organic nanoribbon (named CityU-27) are prepared through the assembly of hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP), 4,4'-vinylenedipyridine (BYE), and phenylboronic acid (BA) together through dative boron←nitrogen (B←N) bonds. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that CityU-27 has a covalent organic nanoribbon structure, where each nanoribbon forms multiple and tight π-π interactions with four neighboring others to generate a Luban lock-like configuration. CityU-27 has been demonstrated to be an efficient photocatalyst in a one-pot tandem reaction of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and semi-hydrogenation reaction of alkynes in series to produce olefins without any additional photosensitizers and co-catalysts (metal-free).

Preparation of a Nanosheeted Uranyl-Organic Framework for Enhanced Photocatalytic Oxidation of Toluene

Preparation of ultrathin metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets is an effective way to improve the catalytic efficiency of MOF photocatalysts owing to their superiority in reducing the recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and holes and enhancing charge transfer. Herein, a light-sensitive two-dimensional uranyl-organic framework named HNU-68 was synthesized. Due to its interlayer stacking structure, the corresponding ultrathin nanosheets with a thickness of 4.4 nm (HNU-68-N) can be obtained through ultrasonic exfoliation. HNU-68-N exhibited an enhanced ability to selectively oxidize toluene to benzaldehyde, with the value of turnover frequency being approximately three times higher than that of the bulk HNU-68. This enhancement is attributed to the smaller size and interface resistance of the layered HNU-68-N nanosheets, which facilitate more thorough substrate contact and faster charge transfer, leading to an improvement in the photocatalytic efficiency. This work provides a potential candidate for the application of ultrathin uranyl-based nanosheets.

Reticular framework materials for photocatalytic organic reactions

Photocatalytic organic reactions, harvesting solar energy to produce high value-added organic chemicals, have attracted increasing attention as a sustainable approach to address the global energy crisis and environmental issues. Reticular framework materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are widely considered as promising candidates for photocatalysis owing to their high crystallinity, tailorable pore environment and extensive structural diversity. Although the design and synthesis of MOFs and COFs have been intensively developed in the last 20 years, their applications in photocatalytic organic transformations are still in the preliminary stage, making their systematic summary necessary. Thus, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and useful guidelines for the exploration of suitable MOF and COF photocatalysts towards appropriate photocatalytic organic reactions. The commonly used reactions are categorized to facilitate the identification of suitable reaction types. From a practical viewpoint, the fundamentals of experimental design, including active species, performance evaluation and external reaction conditions, are discussed in detail for easy experimentation. Furthermore, the latest advances in photocatalytic organic reactions of MOFs and COFs, including their composites, are comprehensively summarized according to the actual active sites, together with the discussion of their structure-property relationship. We believe that this study will be helpful for researchers to design novel reticular framework photocatalysts for various organic synthetic applications.

High-efficiency visible-light-driven oxidation of primary C-H bonds in toluene over a CsPbBr3 perovskite supported by hierarchical TiO2 nanoflakes

Photocatalytic oxidation of toluene to valuable fine chemicals is of great significance, yet faces challenges in the development of advanced catalysts with both high activity and selectivity for the activation of inert C(sp3)-H bonds. Halide perovskites with remarkable optoelectronic properties have shown to be prospective photoactive materials, but the bulky structure with a small surface area and severe recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs are obstacles to application. Here, we fabricate a hierarchical nanoflower-shaped CsPbBr3/TiO2 heterojunction by assembling CsPbBr3 nanoparticles on 2D TiO2 nanoflake subunits. The design significantly downsizes the size of CsPbBr3 from micrometers to nanometers, and forms a type II heterojunction with intimate interfacial contact between CsPbBr3 and TiO2 nanoflakes, thereby accelerating the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. Moreover, the formed hierarchical heterojunction increaseslight absorption by refraction and scattering, offers a large surface area and enhances the adsorption of toluene molecules. Consequently, the optimized CsPbBr3/TiO2 exhibits a high performance (10 200 μmol g-1 h-1) for photocatalytic toluene oxidation with high selectivity (85%) for benzaldehyde generation under visible light. The photoactivity is about 20 times higher than that of blank CsPbBr3, and is among the best photocatalytic performances reported for selective oxidation of toluene under visible light irradiation.

Mesoporous Mixed-Metal-Organic Framework Incorporating a [Ru(Phen)3]2+ Photosensitizer for Highly Efficient Aerobic Photocatalytic Oxidative Coupling of Amines

[Ru(Phen)₃]²⁺ (phen = phenanthroline) as a very classical photosensitizer possesses strong absorption in the visible range and facilitates photoinduced electron transfer, which plays a vital role in regulating photochemical reactions. However, it remains a significant challenge to utilize more adequately and exploit more efficiently the ruthenium-based materials due to the uniqueness, scarcity, and nonrenewal of the noble metal. Here, we integrate the intrinsic advantages of the ruthenium-based photosensitizer and mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (meso-MOFs) into a [Ru(Phen)₃]²⁺ photosensitizer-embedded heterometallic Ni(II)/Ru(II) meso-MOF (LTG-NiRu) via the metalloligand approach. LTG-NiRu, with an extremely robust framework and a large one-dimensional (1D) channel, not only makes ruthenium photosensitizer units anchored in the inner wall of meso-MOF tubes to circumvent the problem of product/catalyst separation and recycling of catalysts in heterogeneous systems but also exhibits exceptional activities for the aerobic photocatalytic oxidative coupling of amine derivatives as a general photocatalyst. The conversion of the light-induced oxidative coupling reaction for various benzylamines is ∼100% in 1 h, and more than 20 chemical products generated by photocatalytic oxidative cycloaddition of N-substituted maleimides and N,N-dimethylaniline can be synthesized easily in the presence of LTG-NiRu upon visible light irradiation. Moreover, recycling experiments demonstrate that LTG-NiRu is an excellent heterogeneous photocatalyst with high stability and excellent reusability. LTG-NiRu represents a great potential photosensitizer-based meso-MOF platform with an efficient aerobic photocatalytic oxidation function that is convenient for gram-scale synthesis.

A Stable Triphenylamine-Based Zn(II)-MOF for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution and Photooxidative Carbon-Carbon Coupling Reaction

Efficient charge transfer has always been a challenge in heterogeneous MOF-based photoredox catalysis due to the poor electrical conductivity of the MOF photocatalyst, the toilless electron-hole recombination, and the uncontrollable host-guest interactions. Herein, a propeller-like tris(3'-carboxybiphenyl)amine (H₃TCBA) ligand was synthesized to fabricate a 3D Zn₃O cluster-based Zn(II)-MOF photocatalyst, Zn₃(TCBA)₂(μ₃-H₂O)H₂O (Zn-TCBA), which was applied to efficient photoreductive H₂ evolution and photooxidative aerobic cross-dehydrogenation coupling reactions of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinolines and nitromethane. In Zn-TCBA, the ingenious introduction of the meta-position benzene carboxylates on the triphenylamine motif not only promotes Zn-TCBA to exhibit a broad visible-light absorption with a maximum absorption edge of 480 nm but also causes special phenyl plane twists with dihedral angles of 27.8-45.8° through the coordination to Zn nodes. The semiconductor-like Zn clusters and the twisted TCBA^3- antenna with multidimensional π interaction sites facilitate photoinduced electron transfer to render Zn-TCBA a good photocatalytic H₂ evolution efficiency of 27.104 mmol·g^-1·h^-1 in the presence of [Co(bpy)₃]Cl₂ under visible-light illumination, surpassing many non-noble-metal MOF systems. Moreover, the positive enough excited-state potential of 2.03 V and the semiconductor-like characteristics of Zn-TCBA endow Zn-TCBA with double oxygen activation ability for photocatalytic oxidation of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinoline substrates with a yield up to 98.7% over 6 h. The durability of Zn-TCBA and the possible catalytic mechanisms were also investigated by a series of experiments including PXRD, IR, EPR, and fluorescence analyses.

Mixed-Component Metal-Organic Framework for Boosting Synergistic Photoactivation of C(sp3)-H and Oxygen

Synergistic catalysis is an efficient and powerful strategy for simultaneously activating reactants by multiple active sites to promote the efficiency of difficult and challenging catalytic reactions. Meanwhile, enzymes with multi-active-site synergistic catalytic properties possessing high efficiency and high selectivity have become the goal pursued in the field of catalytic chemistry in recent years. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as an effective heterogeneous catalytic platform, that can integrate multiple active sites for synergistic catalysis like enzymatic systems have recently attracted interest. Herein, we report a doubly interpenetrated metal-organic framework with dual active sites, Mn^III-porphyrin sites to directly activate molecular oxygen and fluoren-9-one sites to produce a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) agent by the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process to simultaneously activate inert C(sp³)-H bonds for efficient inert C(sp³)-H bond oxidation under mild conditions. The bifunctional mixed-component MOF structure forced the two catalytic sites closer together to a more suitable distance, exhibiting high photocatalytic activity for inert C(sp³)-H bond oxidation with almost unique selectivity under mild conditions. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation of free energy during the whole catalytic process demonstrated that it is likely that the synergistic catalytic process occurred in the interframework to accelerate the catalytic reaction. The assembling mixed-component MOF for synergistic catalysis would be a prospective approach for the inert C(sp³)-H photoactivation and functionalization.

Metallocavitins as Advanced Enzyme Mimics and Promising Chemical Catalysts

The supramolecular approach is becoming increasingly dominant in biomimetics and chemical catalysis due to the expansion of the enzyme active center idea, which now includes binding cavities (hydrophobic pockets), channels and canals for transporting substrates and products. For a long time, the mimetic strategy was mainly focused on the first coordination sphere of the metal ion. Understanding that a highly organized cavity-like enzymatic pocket plays a key role in the sophisticated functionality of enzymes and that the activity and selectivity of natural metalloenzymes are due to the effects of the second coordination sphere, created by the protein framework, opens up new perspectives in biomimetic chemistry and catalysis. There are two main goals of mimicking enzymatic catalysis: (1) scientific curiosity to gain insight into the mysterious nature of enzymes, and (2) practical tasks of mankind: to learn from nature and adopt from its many years of evolutionary experience. Understanding the chemistry within the enzyme nanocavity (confinement effect) requires the use of relatively simple model systems. The performance of the transition metal catalyst increases due to its retention in molecular nanocontainers (cavitins). Given the greater potential of chemical synthesis, it is hoped that these promising bioinspired catalysts will achieve catalytic efficiency and selectivity comparable to and even superior to the creations of nature. Now it is obvious that the cavity structure of molecular nanocontainers and the real possibility of modifying their cavities provide unlimited possibilities for simulating the active centers of metalloenzymes. This review will focus on how chemical reactivity is controlled in a well-defined cavitin nanospace. The author also intends to discuss advanced metal–cavitin catalysts related to the study of the main stages of artificial photosynthesis, including energy transfer and storage, water oxidation and proton reduction, as well as highlight the current challenges of activating small molecules, such as H2O, CO2, N2, O2, H2, and CH4.
