Heterostructured Core-Shell Ni-Co@Fe-Co Nanoboxes of Prussian Blue Analogues for Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from Alkaline Seawater

Tailoring the Compositions and Nanostructures of Trimetallic Prussian Blue Analog-Derived Carbides for Water Oxidation

The electrochemical splitting of water for hydrogen production faces a major challenge due to its anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), necessitating research on the rational design and facile synthesis of OER catalysts to enhance catalytic activity and stability. This study proposes a ligand-induced MOF-on-MOF approach to fabricate various trimetallic MnFeCo-based Prussian blue analog (PBA) nanostructures. The addition of [Fe(CN)6]3- transforms them from cuboids with protruding corners (MnFeCoPBA-I) to core-shell configurations (MnFeCoPBA-II), and finally to hollow structures (MnFeCoPBA-III). After pyrolysis at 800 °C, they are converted into corresponding PBA-derived carbon nanomaterials, featuring uniformly dispersed Mn2Co2C nanoparticles. A comparative analysis demonstrates that the Fe addition enhances catalytic activity, while Mn-doped materials exhibit excellent stability. Specifically, the optimized MnFeCoNC-I-800 demonstrates outstanding OER performance in 1.0 m KOH solution, with an overpotential of 318 mV at 10 mA cm-2, maintaining stability for up to 150 h. Theoretical calculations elucidate synergistic interactions between Fe dopants and the Mn2Co2C matrix, reducing barriers for oxygen intermediates and improving intrinsic OER activity. These findings offer valuable insights into the structure-morphology relationships of MOF precursors, advancing the development of highly active and stable MOF-derived OER catalysts for practical applications.

Rapid Construction of Double Crystalline Prussian Blue Analogue Hetero-Superstructure

The controllable construction of complex metal-organic coordination polymers (CPs) merits untold scientific and technological potential, yet remains a grand challenge of one-step construction and modulating simultaneously valence states of metals and topological morphology. Here, a thiocyanuric acid (TCA)-triggered strategy is presented to one-step rapid synthesis a double-crystalline Prussian blue analogue hetero-superstructure (PBA-hs) that comprises a Co3[Fe(CN)6]2 cube overcoated with a KCo[Fe(CN)6] shell, followed by eight self-assembled small cubes on vertices. Unlike common directing surfactants, TCA not only acts as a trigger for the fast growth of KCo[Fe(CN)6] on the Co3[Fe(CN)6]2 phase resulting in a PBA-on-PBA hetero-superstructure, but also serves as a flange-like bridge between them. By combining experiments with simulations, a deprotonation-induced electron transfer (DIET) mechanism is proposed for formation of second phase in PBA-hs, differing from thermally and photo-induced electron transfer processes. To prove utility, the calcined PBA-hs exhibits enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance. This work provides a new method to design of novel CPs for enriching chemistry and material science. This work offers a practical approach to design novel CPs for enriching chemistry and material science.

Electron Redistribution of Ru Site on MoO2@NiMoO4 Support for Efficient Ampere-Level Current Density Electrolysis of Alkaline Seawater

Seawater electrolysis is a promising but challenging strategy to generate carbon-neutral hydrogen. A grand challenge for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from alkaline seawater electrolysis is the development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts to overcome the limitation of sluggish kinetics. Here, a 3D nanorod hybrid catalyst is reported, which comprises heterostructure MoO2@NiMoO4 supported Ru nanoparticles (Ru/ MoO2@NiMoO4) with a size of ≈5 nm. Benefitting from the effect of strongly coupled interaction, Ru/MoO2@NiMoO4 catalyst exhibits a remarkable alkaline seawater hydrogen evolution performance, featured by a low overpotential of 184 mV at a current density of 1.0 A cm-2, superior to commercial Pt/C (338 mV). Experimental observations demonstrate that the heterostructure MoO2@NiMoO4 as an electron-accepting support makes the electron transfer from the Ru nanoparticles to MoO2, and thereby implements the electron redistribution of Ru site. Mechanistic analysis elucidates that the electron redistribution of active Ru site enhances the ability of hydrogen desorption, thereby promoting alkaline seawater HER kinetics and finally leading to a satisfactory catalysis performance at ampere-level current density of alkaline seawater electrolysis.

A Dual-Cation Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer for Continuous H2 Production from Seawater

Direct seawater splitting (DSS) offers an aspirational route toward green hydrogen (H2) production but remains challenging when operating in a practically continuous manner, mainly due to the difficulty in establishing the water supply-consumption balance under the interference from impurity ions. A DSS system is reported for continuous ampere-level H2 production by coupling a dual-cation exchange membrane (CEM) three-compartment architecture with a circulatory electrolyte design. Monovalent-selective CEMs decouple the transmembrane water migration from interferences of Mg2+, Ca2+, and Cl- ions while maintaining ionic neutrality during electrolysis; the self-loop concentrated alkaline electrolyte ensures the constant gradient of water chemical potential, allowing a specific water supply-consumption balance relationship in a seawater-electrolyte-H2 sequence to be built among an expanded current range. Even paired with commercialized Ni foams, this electrolyzer (model size: 2 × 2 cm2) continuously produces H2 from flowing seawater with a rate of 7.5 mL min-1 at an industrially relevant current of 1.0 A over 100 h. More importantly, the energy consumption can be further reduced by coupling more efficient NiMo/NiFe foams (≈6.2 kWh Nm-3 H2 at 1.0 A), demonstrating the potential to further optimize the continuous DSS electrolyzer for practical applications.

Activating Interfacial Electron Redistribution in Lattice-Matched Biphasic Ni3N-Co3N for Energy-Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Production via Coupled Hydrazine Degradation

The development of high-purity and high-energy-density green hydrogen through water electrolysis holds immense promise, but issues such as electrocatalyst costs and power consumption have hampered its practical application. In this study, we present a promising solution to these challenges through the use of a high-performance bifunctional electrocatalyst for energy-efficient hydrogen production via coupled hydrazine degradation. The biphasic metal nitrides with highly lattice-matched structures are deliberately constructed, forming an enhanced local electric field between the electron-rich Ni3N and electron-deficient Co3N. Additionally, Mn is introduced as an electric field engine to further activate electron redistribution. Our Mn@Ni3N-Co3N/NF bifunctional electrocatalyst achieves industrial-grade current densities of 500 mA cm-2 at 0.49 V without degradation, saving at least 53.3 % energy consumption compared to conventional alkaline water electrolysis. This work will stimulate the further development of metal nitride electrocatalysts and also provide new perspectives on low-cost hydrogen production and environmental protection.

Photochemical engineering unsaturated Pt islands on supported Pd nanocrystals for a robust pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction

The rational design of heterostructured nanocrystals (HNCs) is of great significance for developing highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. However, a significant challenge still lies in realizing the controllable synthesis of desired HNCs directly onto a support and exploring their structure-activity-dependent HER performance. Herein, we reported various controllable Pd7@Ptx core-shell HNCs with optimal hybrid structures via a photochemical deposition strategy. The growth patterns of a Pt shell can be finely controlled by adjusting the growth kinetics, resulting in a varying deposition rate. In particular, the as-prepared Pd7@Pt3 HNCs with a Pt shell in the Stranski-Krastanov mode showed the best performances over a wide pH range media, delivering low overpotentials of 33, 18 and 49 mV, resulting in a catalytic current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low effective catalyst loading of 0.021 mg cm-2. The resulting Tafel slopes were 23.1, 52.6 and 42.7 mV dec-1 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, respectively. It was found that the increased fraction of unsaturated coordination of Pt islands in the resultant material is the key to the enhanced and robust HER activity, which has been confirmed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This strategy could be extended to the rational design and synthesis of other heterostructured catalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Prussian blue analogues of Ni-Co-MoS2 nanozymes with high peroxidase like activity for sensitive detection of glyphosate and copper

The rational development of efficient nanozymes for the colorimetric detection of targets is still challenging. Herein, Prussian blue analogues of Ni-Co-MoS2 nano boxes were fabricated for colorimetric detection of glyphosate and copper ions owing to its peroxidase like activity. At the sensing system, the Ni-Co-MoS2 nano boxes display high peroxidase activity, which could catalytically oxidize the colourless TMB to blue colour oxTMB. In presence of glyphosate in this sensing system the blue colour is diminished, ascribed to the inhibit the catalytic activity of Ni-Co-MoS2 nano boxes. Concurrently, the addition of copper ion, which result in blue colour was reappear due to the generation of glyphosate-copper complex formation. The Ni-Co-MoS2 nano boxes based colorimetric sensing platform was developed to sensitive detection of glyphosate and copper ions with low detection limit of 3 nM for glyphosate and 3.8 nM for copper. This method also displays satisfactory outcomes from real samples analysis and its good accuracy. Therefore, this work provides a great potential for rapid detection of the targets from the environments.

Triggering efficient reconstructions of Co/Fe dual-metal incorporated Ni hydroxide by phosphate additives for electrochemical hydrogen and oxygen evolutions

Alkaline electrochemical water splitting has been considered as an efficient way for the green hydrogen production in industry, where the electrocatalysts play the critical role for the electricity-to-fuel conversion efficiency. Phosphate salts are widely used as additives in the fabrication of electrocatalysts with improved activity, but their roles on the electrocatalytic performance have not been fully understood. Herein, we fabricate Co, Fe dual-metal incorporated Ni hydroxide on Ni foam using NaH2PO4 ((Co, Fe)NiOxHy-pi) and NaH2PO2 ((Co, Fe)NiOxHy-hp) as additive, respectively. We find that (Co, Fe)NiOxHy-hp with NaH2PO2 in the fabrication shows high activity and stability for both HER and OER (a overpotential of -0.629 V and 0.65 V at 400 mA cm-2 for HER and OER, respectively). Further experiment reveals that the reconstructed structures of electrocatalyst by using NaH2PO2 (hp) endow high electrocatalytic performances: (1) in-situ generated active metal improves the accumulation, transportation and activity of hydrogen species in the HER process; and (2) in-situ generated poor-crystalline hydroxide endows superior charge/mass transportation and kinetics improvements in the OER process. Our study may provide an insightful understanding on the catalytic performance of non-precious metal electrocatalysts by controlling additives and guidance for the design and synthesis of novel electrocatalysts.

Spatial Heterogeneity and Strong Coupling of FeII /FeIII in an Individual Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticle for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

The synthesis and characterization of an FeII /FeIII metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocrystal with spatial heterogeneity that arises from the non-uniform distribution of different valence states is disclosed. The FeII /FeIII -Ni Prussian blue analog (PBA) delivers superior photocatalytic performance in the selective CO2 reduction reaction thanks to the strong FeII /FeIII coupling, with CO yield up to 12.27 mmol g-1 h-1 and 90.6% selectivity under visible-light irradiation. Density functional theory calculation and experimental studies prove that the spatial heterogeneity of FeII /FeIII in the individual MOF nanocrystal not only directs and expedites the charge transfer within a catalyst particle but also creates the heterogeneity of catalytically-active Ni sites for efficient CO2 photoreduction. The current findings add to a growing literature of materials with compositional heterogeneity and provide a reference for future research.

Defective copper-cobalt binuclear Prussian blue analogue nanozymes with high specificity as lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase-mimic via axial ligation of histidine

Degradation of polysaccharides based on lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) has received considerably interest in the environment and energy fields since 2010. With the rapid development of nanozymes in various fields, it is highly desirable but challenging to develop LPMO-like nanozymes with high specificity and satisfied activity. Here, a defective copper-cobalt binuclear Prussian blue analogue (CuCoPBA) nanozyme was developed via a facile and ingenious methodology based on single histidine (His). For the first time, His-CuCoPBA nanozyme was found to exhibit LPMO-like activity with H2O2 as a cosubstrate at room temperature and neutral pH, which can efficiently catalyze the degradation of galactomannans selectively. Significantly, the high degradation activity at pH 10 expands the application of Fenton-like nanozymes in alkaline condition. Singlet oxygen (1O2), as a main reactive intermediate, plays a crucial role in the galactomannan degradation catalyzed by His-CuCoPBA nanozyme. Both control experimental and density functional theory (DFT) results indicate Cu-NxHis contributes to the efficiently and selectively catalytic activity of His-CuCoPBA nanozymes by emulating the binding and catalytic sites of LPMOs. The present work not only represents a fundamental breakthrough toward degradation of polysaccharide based on nanozyme, but also contributes to understanding the catalytic mechanism of natural Cu-dependent LPMOs.

Surface restructuring Prussian blue analog-derived bimetallic CoFe phosphides by N-doped graphene quantum dots for electroactive hydrogen evolving catalyst

As a crucial stage of electrochemical water splitting, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) favour catalyst to attain rapid kinetics for its broader application, alternating Pt in the acidic environment. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are one kind of earth-abundant, nonprecious-based catalyst which has been classified as a viable alternative and active for HER. While the performance remains inferior to Pt which primarily targets durability under high current density, pinpointing the reconfiguration strategy would be critical to their catalytic competency. Herein, we reported engineered N-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQD) on the surface of bimetallic CoFe phosphide (CoFeP) derived from cobalt iron Prussian blue analogue (CoFePBA) as an efficient HER. By introducing the NGQD, the surface architect and electronic state of the transition metal are altered through an adjusted electronic configuration and thus, improving the electrocatalytic activity for HER. The X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) highlighting the role of NGQD, which successfully induced the electron density of Co atoms, further expedites its conductivity and electroactivity. The optimized NGQD/CoFeP substantially surpasses an overpotential of 70 mV (vs. RHE) at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4. Furthermore, the NGQD/CoFeP maintains its exceptional stability under an extremely high current density of 600 mA cm-2 after 12 h of continuous operation. Our findings show that NGQD/CoFeP might demonstrate as a viable alternative to the conventional Pt electrocatalyst in commercial water splitting for hydrogen generation.

In-situ fabrication of bimetallic FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterostructure for high-efficient alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis

Rational construction of bifunctional electrocatalysts with long-term stability and high electrocatalytic activity is of great importance, but it is challenging to obtain highly efficient non-precious metal-based catalysts for overall seawater electrolysis. Herein, a nickel foam (NF) self-supporting CoFe-layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH/NF) was directly converted into FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterostructure via hydrothermal method in 50 mM Na2S solution, instead of FeCo2O4@FeCo2S4 core-shell structure. The FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterojunction shows nanosheets structure with rough surface (the thickness of ∼ 198.9 nm), which provides rich oxide/sulfide interfaces, high electrochemical active area, a large number of active sites, as well as fast charge and mass transfer. In 1.0 M KOH solution, 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl, and alkaline natural seawater, the FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterojunction exhibits eminently electrocatalytic performance, with overpotentials of η-100 = 225 mV, η-100 = 233 mV, and η-100 = 238 mV for OER, as well as η-100 = 271 mV, η-100 = 273 mV, and η-100 = 277 mV for HER, respectively. Furthermore, self-supporting FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 electrode (FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4/NF) as the cathode and anode of an electrolyzer exhibits a lower cell voltage of E-100 = 1.75 V in alkaline seawater than those of FeCo2S4/NF (1.77 V), CoFe-LDH/NF (1.87 V), and FeCo2O4/NF (1.91 V). Specifically, FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 electrolyzer can stably produce hydrogen for over 48 h in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolyte. These outstanding electrocatalytic performances and corrosion resistance to salty-water can be attributed to the surface reconstruction behavior of the FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4/NF catalyst during OER, which leads to the in-situ formation of metal oxyhydroxides. In particular, the FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterojunction is also very competitive among most state-of-the-art non-noble metal-based catalysts, whether in KOH or alkaline salty-water electrolytes.

Unlocking Catalytic Potential: Encasing CoP Nanoparticles within Mesoporous CoFeP Nanocubes for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Efficient and durable electrocatalysts fabricated by using nanosized nonprecious-metal-based materials have attracted considerable attention for use in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Understanding performance disparities and structure-property relationships of various nonprecious-metal-based nanostructures is crucial for optimizing their applications. Herein, CoP nanoparticles encompassed within a CoFeP shell (named CoP/CoFeP) are fabricated. The mesoporous CoFeP shell enables effective mass transport, affords abundant active sites, and ensures the accessibility of hybrid interfaces between CoP and CoFeP. Therefore, encased CoP/CoFeP nanocubes exhibit excellent OER catalytic activity with an overpotential of 266 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline media, superior to reference hollow CoFeP nanocubes and commercial RuO2. Experimental characterization and theoretical calculations show that the encased structure of CoP/CoFeP with a rich Fe-doped shell enables electronic interactions between CoP and CoFeP, as well as accelerates structural reconstruction that exposes more active sites, yielding an enhanced OER performance. This study aims to inspire further work on nonprecious-metal catalysts with tailored nanostructures and electronic properties for the OER.

A Readily Achieved Potentiostatic Method in Density Functional Theory Calculation for Improved Prediction of the Performance for Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction Reaction

Accurate prediction of the catalytic performance of nitrogen reduction reaction catalysts based on density functional theory (DFT) calculation is of great significance for developing catalytic materials for nitrogen fixation. However, the applied electrode potential induced the fixation of Fermi level and solvation effect are commonly ignored in the current computational hydrogen electrode method, which leads to the large deviation between the calculation predicted limit potential and the experimentally measured limit potential. In this work, the simple external iteration method is proposed to simulate the Fermi level of the catalysts that are fixed by the applied electrode potential, along with the hybrid solvent model to describe the strong interaction, such as hydrogen bond, between the solvent molecules and the intermediates. This method allowed the theoretical and experimental limit potentials to be in good agreement, indicating the significant effect of the electrode potential and solvation in the DFT calculation. These results will guide the calculation-based prediction of other reaction systems in the field of electrocatalysis.

Highly Durable and Efficient Seawater Electrolysis Enabled by Defective Graphene-Confined Nanoreactor

Direct seawater electrolysis is a promising technology for massive green hydrogen production but is limited by the lack of durable and efficient electrocatalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we develop a core-shell nanoreactor as a high-performance OER catalyst consisting of NiFe alloys encapsulated within defective graphene layers (NiFe@DG) by a facile microwave shocking strategy. This catalyst needs overpotentials of merely 218 and 276 mV in alkalized seawater to deliver current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, and operates continuously for 2000 h with negligible activity decay (1.0%), making it one of the best OER catalysts reported to date. Detailed experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the excellent durability of NiFe@DG originates from the formation of the built-in electric field triggered by the defective graphene coating against chloride ions at the electrode/electrolyte interface, thus protecting the active NiFe alloys at the core from dissolution and aggregation under harsh operation conditions. Further, a highly stable and efficient seawater electrolyzer is assembled with the NiFe@DG anode and the Pt/C cathode to demonstrate the practicability of the catalysts.

Ru-W Pair Sites Enabling the Ensemble Catalysis for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Simultaneously optimizing elementary steps, such as water dissociation, hydroxyl transferring, and hydrogen combination, is crucial yet challenging for achieving efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. Herein, Ru single atom-doped WO2 nanoparticles with atomically dispersed Ru-W pair sites (Ru-W/WO2 -800) are developed using a crystalline lattice-confined strategy, aiming to gain efficient alkaline HER. It is found that Ru-W/WO2 -800 exhibits remarkable HER activity, characterized by a low overpotential (11 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ), notable mass activity (5863 mA mg-1 Ru at 50 mV), and robust stability (500 h at 250 mA cm-2 ). The highly efficient activity of Ru-W/WO2 -800 is attributed to the synergistic effect of Ru-W sites through ensemble catalysis. Specifically, the W sites expedite rapid hydroxyl transferring and water dissociation, while the Ru sites accelerate the hydrogen combination process, synergistically facilitating the HER activity. This study opens a promising pathway for tailoring the coordination environment of atomic-scale catalysts to achieve efficient electro-catalysis.

One-step fabrication of vanadium-doped CoFe PBA nanosheets for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Finding effective and affordable non-noble metal catalysts is one of the most important yet difficult tasks because of the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, we synthesized vanadium-doped CoFe PBA nanosheets on nickel foam in a single step to change the electronic structure with metal doping. The sheet structure facilitates charge transfer, while vanadium doping modifies the electronic structure to enhance the catalytic activity. With just a 229 mV overpotential needed in the OER reaction to reach 10 mA cm-2, the as-synthesised electrocatalyst demonstrates high electrocatalytic activity. The produced electrocatalyst can operate at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for 12 h, and it displays outstanding stability even at a high OER current density of 100 mA cm-2 for 12 h. This study will contribute to the development of efficient and affordable non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts.

Engineering multilayer catalytic interfaces with N, S co-regulation for high performance water splitting

The rational design of hierarchical nano-heterojunction electrocatalysts with efficient and durable water splitting performance is a hot research topic in the field of sustainable energy conversion. Herein, chemical vapor deposition methods are exploited to dope N and S elements in a core-shell structured Co₃O₄@NiMoO₄ with a layered structure (N, S-Co₃O₄@NiMoO₄/NF₄₀₀). The close contact between Co₃O₄ nanowires and N, S co-doped NiMoO₄ cubic arrays facilitates electron transfer. The electronic structure of Ni, Co and Mo atoms could be optimized to enhance their electrical conductivity by modulation of N and S atoms. At current densities of 10 and 200 mA cm^-2, N, S-Co₃O₄@NiMoO₄/NF₄₀₀ has an overpotential of 200, 300 and 71 160 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively. Its water splitting voltages are 1.45 V and 2 V at 10 and 200 mA cm^-2. In addition, N, S-Co₃O₄@NiMoO₄/NF₄₀₀ can operate stably for 100 h at a current density of 50 mA cm^-2. This work provides a new approach to designing bifunctional catalysts with hierarchical heterogeneous structures co-regulated by dual elements.
