Abstract
The ever increasing demands for greater sustainability and lower energy usage in chemical processes call for fundamentally new approaches and reactivity principles. In this context, the pronounced prevalence of odd-oxidation states in less precious metals bears untapped potential for fundamentally distinct reactivity modes via metalloradical catalysis1-3. Contrary to the well-established reactivity paradigm that organic free radicals, upon addition to a vinylcyclopropane, lead to rapid ring opening under strain release-a transformation that serves widely as a mechanistic probe (radical clock)4 for the intermediacy of radicals5-we herein show that a metal-based radical, that is, a Ni(I) metalloradical, triggers reversible cis/trans isomerization instead of opening. The isomerization proceeds under chiral inversion and, depending on the substitution pattern, occurs at room temperature in less than 5 min, requiring solely the addition of the non-precious catalyst. Our combined computational and experimental mechanistic studies support metalloradical catalysis as origin of this profound reactivity, rationalize the observed stereoinversion and reveal key reactivity features of the process, including its reversibility. These insights enabled the iterative thermodynamic enrichment of enantiopure cis/trans mixtures towards a single diastereomer through multiple Ni(I) catalysis rounds and also extensions to divinylcyclopropanes, which constitute strategic motifs in natural product- and total syntheses6. While the trans-isomer usually requires heating at approximately 200 °C to trigger thermal isomerization under racemization to cis-divinylcyclopropane, which then undergoes facile Cope-type rearrangement, the analogous contra-thermodynamic process is herein shown to proceed under Ni(I) metalloradical catalysis under mild conditions without any loss of stereochemical integrity, enabling a mild and stereochemically pure access to seven-membered rings, fused ring systems and spirocycles.

Abstract
Silylcyclopropenes are employed as precursors of α-silyl vinyl carbenes and trapped with alkenes. Cyclopropylsilanes were obtained in good yields with ample scope and complete regio- and diastereoselectivity. Stereoretentive protodesilylations enabled access to cis-1,2-disubstituted cyclopropanes. Cyclopropylstannanes and -germanes can also be prepared from the corresponding cyclopropenes.

Abstract
A new strategy is reported for intramolecular Buchner-type reactions using PIDA as a promotor. Traditionally, the Buchner reaction is achieved via Rh-carbenoids derived from RhII catalysts with diazo compounds. Herein, the first metal-free Buchner-type reaction to construct highly strained cycloheptatriene- and cyclopropane-fused lactams is presented. The advantage of these transformations is in their mild reaction conditions, simple operation, broad functional group compatibility and rapid synthetic protocol. In addition, scaled-up experiments and a series of follow-up synthetic procedures were performed to clarify the flexibility and practicability of this method. DFT calculations were carried out to clarify the mechanism. A new strategy is reported for intramolecular Buchner-type reactions using PIDA as a promotor.![]()

Abstract
A method for the synthesis of 3-methylene-1,4-cycloheptadiene derivatives via an 8π electrocyclization reaction was developed. The triene substrate bearing a phosphate or carbamate group was prepared from γ,δ-unsaturated esters and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes in four steps. Upon treatment with NaHMDS or KHMDS, the substrate formed a heptatrienyl anion, which underwent electrocyclization and subsequent β-elimination of the leaving group. The product could be converted into a tropylium salt in two steps.

Abstract
AbstractThe ability of highly energetic metal–carbene intermediates to engage in complex cascade or formal cycloaddition processes is one of the most powerful tools for building intricate molecular architectures in a straightforward manner. Among this type of organometallic intermediates, non-acceptor metal carbenes are particularly challenging to access and, therefore, have experienced slower development. In this regard, our group has exploited the use of electrophilic gold(I) complexes to selectively activate certain classes of substrates for the generation of this type of intermediate. Thus, very different types of molecules, such as enynes or 7-substituted cycloheptatrienes, lead to the formation of carbenes under gold(I) catalysis. Related rhodium(II) carbenes can also be generated from cycloheptatrienes. In this account, we aim to summarize our efforts towards the in situ generation of such highly versatile organometallic species as well as studies on their reactivity through formal cycloadditions or complex cascade reactions.1 Introduction2 Generation of Au(I)-Vinylcarbenes via a Cycloisomerization/1,5-Alkoxy Migration Cascade2.1 Intramolecular Trapping of Au(I) Vinylcarbenes2.1.1 Applications in Total Synthesis2.2 Intermolecular Trapping of Au(I) Vinylcarbenes2.2.1 Total Synthesis of Schisanwilsonene A2.2.2 Trapping with Furans, 1,3-Dicarbonyl Compounds and Cyclic Alkenes2.2.3 Mechanism of the Cycloisomerization/1,5-Migration Sequence and the Role of the OR Migrating Group2.2.4 (4+3) Cycloadditions from Enynes3 Formal Cycloadditions of Simple Donor Metal Carbenes3.1 The Metal-Catalyzed Retro-Buchner Reaction3.2 Formal Cycloadditions with Non-Acceptor Carbenes via Metal-Catalyzed Aromative Decarbenations3.2.1 (4+1) Cycloadditions of Au(I) Carbenes3.2.2 (3+2) Cycloadditions of Au(I) Carbenes3.2.3 (4+3) Cycloadditions of Rh(II) Carbenes4 Concluding Remarks

Abstract
Alkynylcyclopropanes have found promising applications in both organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry but remain rather underexplored due to the challenges associated with their preparation. We describe a convenient two-step methodology for the alkynylcyclopropanation of alkenes, based on the rhodium(II)-catalyzed decarbenation of 7-alkynyl cycloheptatrienes. The catalytic system employed circumvents a fundamental problem associated with these substrates, which usually evolve via 6-endo-dig cyclization or ring-contraction pathways under metal catalysis. This unique performance unlocks a rapid access to a diverse library of alkynylcyclopropanes (including derivatives of complex drug-like molecules), versatile intermediates that previously required much lengthier synthetic approaches. Combining experiments and DFT calculations, the complete mechanistic picture for the divergent reactivity of alkynylcycloheptatrienes under metal catalysis has been unveiled, rationalizing the unique selectivity displayed by rhodium(II) complexes.

Abstract
Despite the extensive studies on the reactions between conventional diazocompounds and indoles, these are still limited by the independent synthesis of the carbene precursors, the specific catalysts, and the required multi-step manipulation of the products. In this work, we explore redox-active carbenes in the expedited and divergent synthesis of functionalized indoles. NHPI-DA displays unusual efficiency and selectivity to yield insertion products that can be swiftly elaborated into boron and carbon substituents that are particularly problematic in carbene-mediated reactions.

Abstract
A stereoselective gold(I)-catalyzed vinylcyclopropanation of alkenes has been developed. A gold-coordinated cationic vinyl carbene species, readily generated via a rearrangement of the ethylenedithioacetal of propargyl aldehyde, reacts with a wide range of alkenes to afford thio-substituted vinylcyclopropanes. The gold-catalyzed vinyl cyclopropanation proceeds under mild conditions at room temperature and is generally selective for the formation of cis-substituted cyclopropanes. The reaction allows the formal introduction of a "naked" vinyl carbene, by subsequent chemoselective hydrodesulfurisation of the ethylenedithio-bridge. The synthetic utility of the new method is demonstrated by a short, racemic formal synthesis of the alkaloid cephalotaxin, hinging on a key vinyl cyclopropane-cyclopentene rearrangement.

Abstract
The formal (4+3) cycloaddition of 1,3-dienes with Rh(II) and Au(I) non-acceptor vinyl carbenes, generated from vinylcycloheptatrienes or alkoxyenynes, respectively, leads to 1,4-cycloheptadienes featuring complex and diverse substitution patterns, including natural dyctiopterene C' and a hydroxylated derivative of carota-1,4-diene. A complete mechanistic picture is presented, in which Au(I) and Rh(II) non-acceptor vinyl carbenes were shown to undergo a vinylcyclopropanation/Cope rearrangement or a direct (4+3) cycloaddition that takes place in a non-concerted manner.

Abstract
Three- and four-membered rings, widespread motifs in nature and medicinal chemistry, have fascinated chemists ever since their discovery. However, due to energetic considerations, small rings are often difficult to assemble. In this regard, homogeneous gold catalysis has emerged as a powerful tool to construct these highly strained carbocycles. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of all the major advances and discoveries made in the gold-catalyzed synthesis of cyclopropanes, cyclopropenes, cyclobutanes, cyclobutenes, and their corresponding heterocyclic or heterosubstituted analogs.

Abstract
Donor and donor-donor carbenes are two important kinds of carbenes, which have experienced tremendous growth in the past two decades. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent development of donor and donor-donor carbene chemistry. The development of this chemistry offers efficient protocols to construct a wide variety of C-C and C-X bonds in organic synthesis. This review is organized based on the different types of carbene precursors, including diazo compounds, hydrazones, enynones, cycloheptatrienes and cyclopropenes. The typical transformations, the reaction mechanisms, as well as their subsequent applications in the synthesis of complex natural products and bioactive molecules are discussed. Due to the rapidly increasing interest in this area, we believe that this review will provide a timely and comprehensive discussion of recent progress in donor and donor-donor carbene chemistry.

Abstract
A gold(i)-catalyzed cyclopropane-alkene metathesis has been demonstrated with two new families of cyclopropane derivatives of naphthalene and phenanthrene (benzo-fused norcaradienes). In this process, metal carbene units are transferred from a persistent cyclopropane to an alkene, upon release of naphthalene or phenanthrene, allowing the diastereoselective synthesis of a wide range of aryl and vinyl cyclopropanes.

Abstract
Cyclopropenylmethyl sulfonamides with tethered heteroaromatics have been demonstrated to undergo divergent gold-catalysed cyclisation reactions. A formal dearomative (4+3) cycloaddition takes place with furan-tethered substrates, yielding densely functionalised 5,7-fused heterocycles related to the bioactive curcusone natural products. Indole-tethered substrates display divergent reactivity giving biologically important tetrahydro-β-carbolines via a Friedel-Crafts mechanism.

Abstract
An operationally simple and broadly applicable novel cyclopropanation of styrenes using gem-diiodomethyl carbonyl reagents has been developed. Visible-light triggered the photoinduced generation of iodomethyl carbonyl radicals, able to cyclopropanate a wide array of styrenes with excellent chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance. To highlight the utility of our photocyclopropanation, we demonstrated the late-stage functionalization of biomolecule derivatives.

Abstract
Cyclopropanation reactions of carbenes with arenes provide a straightforward pathway to norcaradienes or cycloheptatrienes. This reaction normally requires harsh reaction conditions or transition-metal catalysts. In this report, we describe the metal-free visible-light photolysis of aryl diazoacetates in aromatic solvents, which provides access to the norcaradiene ring system in a highly regio- and stereoselective manner. The mild reaction conditions of this approach also allow chemoselective cyclopropanation of substituted arenes without competing C-H functionalization reactions.

Abstract
Cationic gold vinyl carbene/allylic cation complexes of the form (E)-[(L)AuC(H)C(H)CAr2]+ OTf- {L = IPr, Ar = Ph [(E)-5a], L = IPr, Ar = 4-C6H4OMe [(E)-5b], L = P(t-Bu)2 o-biphenyl, Ar = 4-C6H4OMe [(E)-5c]} were generated in solution via Lewis acid-mediated ionization of the corresponding gold (γ-methoxy)vinyl complexes (E)-(L)AuC(H)C(H)C(OMe)Ar2 at or below -95 °C. Complexes (E)-5b and (E)-5c were fully characterized in solution employing multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, which established the predominant contribution of the aurated allylic cation resonance structure and the significant distribution of positive charge into the γ-anisyl rings. Complex (E)-5b reacted rapidly at -95 °C with neutral two-electron, hydride, and oxygen atom donors exclusively at the C1 position of the vinyl carbene moiety and with p-methoxystyrene to form the corresponding vinylcyclopropane. In the absence of nucleophile (E)-5a decomposed predominantly via intermolecular carbene dimerization whereas formation of 1-aryl-5-methoxy indene upon ionization of (Z)-(IPr)AuC(H)C(H)C(OMe)(4-C6H4OMe)2 [(Z)-6b] implicated an intramolecular Friedel-Crafts or electrocyclic Nazarov pathway for the decomposition of the unobserved vinyl carbene complex (Z)-[(IPr)AuC(H)C(H)C(4-C6H4OMe)2]+ OTf- [(Z)-5b].

Abstract
Mesityl gold(I) carbenes lacking heteroatom stabilization or shielding ancillary ligands have been generated and spectroscopically characterized from chloro(mesityl)methylgold(I) carbenoids bearing JohnPhos-type ligands by chloride abstraction with GaCl3 . The aryl carbenes react with PPh3 and alkenes to give stable phosphonium ylides and cyclopropanes, respectively. Oxidation with pyridine N-oxide and intermolecular C-H insertion to cyclohexane have also been observed. In the absence of nucleophiles, a bimolecular reaction, similar to that observed for other metal carbenes, leads to a symmetrical alkene.

Abstract
Chiral cyclopentadienyl RhIII complexes efficiently catalyze enantioselective cyclopropanations of electron-deficient olefins with N-enoxysuccinimides as the C1 unit. Excellent asymmetric inductions and high diastereoselectivities can be obtained for a wide range of substrate combinations. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions without precautions to exclude air and water. Moreover, the synthetic utility of the developed method is demonstrated by concise syntheses of members of the oxylipin natural products family and the KMO inhibitor UPF-648.

Abstract
Asymmetric cyclopropane synthesis currently requires bespoke strategies, methods, substrates, and reagents, even when targeting similar compounds. This approach slows down discovery and limits available chemical space. Introduced herein is a practical and versatile diazocompound and its performance in the first unified asymmetric synthesis of functionalized cyclopropanes. The redox-active leaving group in this reagent enhances the reactivity and selectivity of geminal carbene transfer. This effect allowed the asymmetric cyclopropanation of various olefins, including unfunctionalized aliphatic alkenes, that enables the three-step total synthesis of (-)-dictyopterene A. This unified synthetic approach delivers high enantioselectivities that are independent of the stereoelectronic properties of the functional groups transferred. Our results demonstrate that orthogonally differentiated diazocompounds are viable and advantageous equivalents of single-carbon chirons.

Abstract
Rhodium carbenes are key intermediates in a range of cycloadditions and insertion reactions. Herein, we report the first generation of donor RhII carbenes by decarbenation of 7-substituted 1,3,5-cycloheptatrienes. This discovery unlocks an improved retro-Buchner-cyclopropanation sequence, a Si-H insertion reaction for a broad-scope synthesis of allylsilanes, and a new method for the vinylogation of aldehydes. The last strategy led to the development of an iterative synthesis of E-polyenes, and to the total synthesis of navenones B and C.

Abstract
A procedure allowing access to unprecedented tripeptides containing a trans-2-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid residue in their central position has been established. The key features of the strategy are the use of a masked trans-2-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid monomer equivalent for C-terminal coupling and full N-Boc protection of all amide groups until the final step.

Abstract
Through the design of a second generation of more reactive 7-substituted 1,3,5-cycloheptatrienes, a room-temperature gold(I)-catalyzed retro-Buchner-cyclopropanation sequence and the first zinc(II)-catalyzed version of this process, which uses inexpensive ZnBr2 as catalyst, have been developed. This led to a broad-scope cyclopropanation of both activated and unactivated alkenes, including late-stage derivatization of biologically relevant compounds, and to the total synthesis of (±)-lactobacillic acid.

Abstract
Phosphines are important ligands in homogenous catalysis and have been crucial for many advances, such as in cross‐coupling, hydrofunctionalization, or hydrogenation reactions. Herein we report the synthesis and application of a novel class of phosphines bearing ylide substituents. These phosphines are easily accessible via different synthetic routes from commercially available starting materials. Owing to the extra donation from the ylide group to the phosphorus center the ligands are unusually electron‐rich and can thus function as strong electron donors. The donor capacity surpasses that of commonly used phosphines and carbenes and can easily be tuned by changing the substitution pattern at the ylidic carbon atom. The huge potential of ylide‐functionalized phosphines in catalysis is demonstrated by their use in gold catalysis. Excellent performance at low catalyst loadings under mild reaction conditions is thus seen in different types of transformations.

Abstract
The divergent regioselective cyclization of N-(2-trifluoromethyl-3-alkynyl) oximes by a suitable choice of a gold(i) or a Brønsted acid catalyst, leading to 4-trifluoromethyl-N-hydroxypyrroles or 4-trifluoromethyl-5-alkylisoxazoles was developed. In order to avoid the tedious separation of unstable N-(2-trifluoromethyl-3-alkynyl) oximes, an easy two-step, one-pot synthesis of 4-trifluoromethyl-5-alkylisoxazoles was realized via the sequential oxidation of the corresponding hydroxylamines and subsequent treatment with the reductant, sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3). This two-step, one-pot procedure is a complementary method for the synthesis of 4-trifluoromethyl-5-alkylisoxazole from those unstable N-(2-trifluoromethyl-3-alkynyl) oximes.

Abstract
Cyclopropanations of benzene rings by oxidatively generated α-oxo gold carbenes are for the first time demonstrated in a Buchner reaction, in which readily available propargyl benzyl ethers are converted in one-pot to tetrahydropyranone-fused cycloheptatrienes via sequential oxidative gold catalysis and base-promoted isomerization. Additional examples of arene cyclopropanations without fragmentation of the cyclopropane ring are also realized.

Abstract
The formal (3+2) cycloaddition between terminal allenes and aryl or styryl gold(I) carbenes generated by a retro-Buchner reaction of 7-substituted 1,3,5-cycloheptatrienes led to indenes and cyclopentadienes, respectively. These cycloaddition processes have been applied to the construction of the carbon skeleton of the cycloaurenones and the dysiherbols as well as to the total synthesis of (±)-laurokamurene B.
