High-Affinity Detection and Capture of Heavy Metal Contaminants using Block Polymer Composite Membranes

Sulfonated Pentablock Copolymer (NexarTM) for Water Remediation and Other Applications

This review focuses on the use of a sulfonated pentablock copolymer commercialized as NexarTM in water purification applications. The properties and the use of sulfonated copolymers, in general, and of NexarTM, in particular, are described within a brief reference focusing on the problem of different water contaminants, purification technologies, and the use of nanomaterials and nanocomposites for water treatment. In addition to desalination and pervaporation processes, adsorption and photocatalytic processes are also considered here. The reported results confirm the possibility of using NexarTM as a matrix for embedded nanoparticles, exploiting their performance in adsorption and photocatalytic processes and preventing their dispersion in the environment. Furthermore, the reported antimicrobial and antibiofouling properties of NexarTM make it a promising material for achieving active coatings that are able to enhance commercial filter lifetime and performance. The coated filters show selective and efficient removal of cationic contaminants in filtration processes, which is not observed with a bare commercial filter. The UV surface treatment and/or the addition of nanostructures such as graphene oxide (GO) flakes confer NexarTM with coating additional functionalities and activity. Finally, other application fields of this polymer are reported, i.e., energy and/or gas separation, suggesting its possible use as an efficient and economical alternative to the more well-known Nafion polymer.

Activated nanosulfur for broad-spectrum heavy metals capture

Current problems of existing heavy metal-removing technologies, especially for nanomaterials-based ones, are typically single metal ion-specific, high-cost and collected difficult. Herein, facile modification of commercial sulfur creates a versatile adsorbent platform to address challenges. The versatile adsorbent can be easily prepared through solvothermal treatment of a saturated commercial sulfur solution, followed by water precipitation on a commercial foam that eliminates the need for separation. Interestingly, the solvothermal treatment endows the resulting nanosulfur with sulfate acid groups (hard Lewis base), sulfur anions (soft base), and sulfite groups (borderline base), promising the coordination of all types of heavy metal ions (Lewis acids). As such, this versatile adsorbent with well-distributed adsorption sites exhibits highly effective heavy metal adsorption capacity towards diverse heavy metal ions for both single-component and multi-component adsorption, including soft, hard, borderline Lewis metal ions, with ultra-high adsorption ability (e.g., 903.79 mg g-1 for Cu2+). These findings highlighted the potential of this low-cost sulfur-based adsorbent to address the arising challenges in ensuring clean water.

Functionalized Amphiphilic Block Copolymers and Complex Emulsions for Selective Sensing of Dissolved Metals at Liquid-Liquid Interfaces

Increasing contamination in potable water supplies necessitates the development of sensing methods that provide the speed and selectivity necessary for safety. One promising method relies on recognition and detection at the liquid-liquid interface of dynamic complex emulsions. These all-liquid materials transduce changes in interfacial tensions into optical signals via the coupling of their chemical, physical, and optical properties. Thus, to introduce selectivity, it is necessary to modify the liquid-liquid interface with an interfacially stable and selective recognition unit. To this end, we report the synthesis and characterization of amphiphilic block copolymers modified with metal chelators to selectively measure the concentrations of dissolved metal ions. We find that significant reduction in interfacial tensions arises upon quantitative addition of metal ions with high affinity toward functionalized chelators. Furthermore, measurements from UV-vis spectroscopy reveal that complexation of the block copolymers with metal ions leads to an increase in surface excess and surfactant effectiveness. We also demonstrate selective detection of iron(III) cations (Fe3+) on the μM levels even through interference from other mono-, di-, or trivalent cations in complex matrices of synthetic groundwater. Our results provide a unique platform that couples selective recognition and modulation of interfacial behaviors and demonstrates a step forward in the development of the multiplexed sensing device needed to deconvolute the complicated array of contaminants that comprise real-world environmental samples.

Valorised polypropylene waste based reversible sensor for copper ion detection in blood and water

Heavy metals and plastic pollutants are the two most disastrous challenges to the environment requiring immediate actions. In this work, a techno-commercially feasible approach to address both challenges is presented, where a waste polypropylene (PP) based reversible sensor is produced to selectively detect copper ions (Cu2+) in blood and water from different sources. The waste PP-based sensor was fabricated in the form of an emulsion-templated porous scaffold decorated with benzothiazolinium spiropyran (BTS), which produced a reddish colour upon exposure to Cu2+. The presence of Cu2+ was checked by naked eye, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and DC (Direct Current) probe station by measuring the current where the sensor's performance remained unaffected while analysing blood, water from different sources, and acidic or basic environment. The sensor exhibited 1.3 ppm as the limit of detection value in agreement with the WHO recommendations. The reversible nature of the sensor was determined by cyclic exposure of the sensor towards visible light turning it from coloured to colourless within 5 min and regenerated the sensor for the subsequent analysis. The reversibility of the sensor through exchange between Cu2+- Cu+ was confirmed by XPS analysis. A resettable and multi-readout INHIBIT logic gate was proposed for the sensor using Cu2+ and visible light as the inputs and colour change, reflectance band and current as the output. The cost-effective sensor enabled rapid detection of the presence of Cu2+ in both water and complex biological samples such as blood. While the approach developed in this study provides a unique opportunity to address the environmental burden of plastic waste management, it also allows for the possible valorization of plastics for use in enormous value-added applications.

Unlocking the potential of polymeric desalination membranes by understanding molecular-level interactions and transport mechanisms

Polyamide reverse osmosis (PA-RO) membranes achieve remarkably high water permeability and salt rejection, making them a key technology for addressing water shortages through processes including seawater desalination and wastewater reuse. However, current state-of-the-art membranes suffer from challenges related to inadequate selectivity, fouling, and a poor ability of existing models to predict performance. In this Perspective, we assert that a molecular understanding of the mechanisms that govern selectivity and transport of PA-RO and other polymer membranes is crucial to both guide future membrane development efforts and improve the predictive capability of transport models. We summarize the current understanding of ion, water, and polymer interactions in PA-RO membranes, drawing insights from nanofiltration and ion exchange membranes. Building on this knowledge, we explore how these interactions impact the transport properties of membranes, highlighting assumptions of transport models that warrant further investigation to improve predictive capabilities and elucidate underlying transport mechanisms. We then underscore recent advances in in situ characterization techniques that allow for direct measurements of previously difficult-to-obtain information on hydrated polymer membrane properties, hydrated ion properties, and ion-water-membrane interactions as well as powerful computational and electrochemical methods that facilitate systematic studies of transport phenomena.

Recent Advances in Responsive Membrane Functionalization Approaches and Applications

In recent years, significant advances have been made in the field of functionalized membranes. With the functionalization using various materials, such as polymers and enzymes, membranes can exhibit property changes in response to an environmental stimulation, such as heat, light, ionic strength, or pH. The resulting responsive nature allows for an increased breadth of membrane uses, due to the developed functionalization properties, such as smart-gating filtration for size-selective water contaminant removal, self-cleaning antifouling surfaces, increased scalability options, and highly sensitive molecular detection. In this review, new advances in both fabrication and applications of functionalized membranes are reported and summarized, including temperature-responsive, pH-responsive, light-responsive, enzyme-functionalized, and two-dimensional material-functionalized membranes. Specific emphasis was given to the most recent technological improvements, current limitations, advances in characterization techniques, and future directions for the field of functionalized membranes.

Trap Inlaid Cationic Hybrid Composite Material for Efficient Segregation of Toxic Chemicals from Water

Metal-based oxoanions are potentially toxic pollutants that can cause serious water pollution. Therefore, the segregation of such species has recently received significant research attention. Even though several adsorbents have been employed for effective management of chemicals, their limited microporous nature along with non-monolithic applicability has thwarted their large-scale real-time application. Herein, we developed a unique anion exchangeable hybrid composite aerogel material (IPcomp-6), integrating a stable cationic metal-organic polyhedron with a hierarchically porous metal-organic gel. The composite scavenger demonstrated a highly selective and very fast segregation efficiency for various hazardous oxoanions such as, HAsO₄ ^2- , SeO₄ ^2- , ReO₄ ^- , CrO₄ ^2- , MnO₄ ^- , in water, in the presence of 100-fold excess of other coexisting anions. The material was able to selectively eliminate trace HAsO₄ ^2- even at low concentration to well below the As^V limit in drinking water defined by WHO.

Graphene Nanobeacons with High-Affinity Pockets for Combined, Selective, and Effective Decontamination and Reagentless Detection of Heavy Metals

Access to clean water for drinking, sanitation, and irrigation is a major sustainable development goal of the United Nations. Thus, technologies for cleaning water and quality-monitoring must become widely accessible and of low-cost, while being effective, selective, sustainable, and eco-friendly. To meet this challenge, hetero-bifunctional nanographene fluorescent beacons with high-affinity pockets for heavy metals are developed, offering top-rated and selective adsorption for cadmium and lead, reaching 870 and 450 mg g^-1 , respectively. The heterobifunctional and multidentate pockets also operate as selective gates for fluorescence signal regulation with sub-nanomolar sensitivity (0.1 and 0.2 nm for Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ , respectively), due to binding affinities as low as those of antigen-antibody interactions. Importantly, the acid-proof nanographenes can be fully regenerated and reused. Their broad visible-light absorption offers an additional mode for water-quality monitoring based on ultra-low cost and user-friendly reagentless paper detection with the naked-eye at a limit of detection of 1 and 10 ppb for Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ ions, respectively. This work shows that photoactive nanomaterials, densely-functionalized with strong, yet selective ligands for targeted contaminants, can successfully combine features such as excellent adsorption, reusability, and sensing capabilities, in a way to extend the material's applicability, its life-cycle, and value-for-money.

Electrophilic and nucleophilic displacement reactions at the bridgehead borons of tris(pyridyl)borate scorpionate complexes

Although a wide variety of boron-based "scorpionate" ligands have been implemented, a modular route that offers facile access to different substitution patterns at boron has yet to be developed. Here, we demonstrate new reactivity patterns at the bridgehead positions of a ruthenium tris(pyrid-2-yl)borate complex that allow for facile tuning of steric and electronic properties.

Macroporous chitin microspheres prepared by surfactant micelle swelling strategy for rapid capture of lead (II) from wastewater

Heavy metal pollution of water source continues to be one of the most serious environmental problems which have attracted major global concern. Here, a macroporous chitin microsphere is prepared by surfactant micelle swelling strategy followed by modification with tetraethylenepentamine for Pb²⁺ removal from wastewater. The resultant adsorbent not only exhibits fast adsorption kinetic (>80% of its equilibrium uptake within 20 min) but also has high adsorption capacity of 218.4 ± 6.59 mg/g and excellent reusability (>75% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption/desorption cycles). More importantly, under the continuous operating mode, the adsorbent can treat about 39,000 kg water/kg adsorbent, and the Pb²⁺ concentration decreases from 2000 μg/L to smaller than 10 μg/L, meeting the drinking water standard recommended by the World Health Organization (10 μg/L). All results indicate that the tetraethylenepentamine-modified macroporous chitin microspheres have great potential in the treatment of heavy metal contamination.

Multifunctional Zr-MOF Based on Bisimidazole Tetracarboxylic Acid for pH Sensing and Photoreduction of Cr(VI)

Herein, a new luminescent zirconium MOF [Zr-BBI, BBI = 4,4',4″,4‴-(1,4-phenylenebis(1H-imidazole-2,4,5-triyl))tetrabenzoic acid] was successfully constructed by a rationally designed functionalized bisimidazole tetracarboxylic acid ligand. Zr-BBI consists of eight-connected Zr₆ clusters and four-connected BBI ligands. The high connection mode must be responsible for the high stabilities of Zr-BBI in both acidic and basic systems. Apart from the high stability, the inherent bisimidazole units endow Zr-BBI with the traits of intense fluorescent emission as well as the protonation/deprotonation behavior. Therefore, Zr-BBI could display a highly sensitive fluorescence response along with the varying pH values in the aqueous solutions and act as a pH sensing scaffold, especially in the pH value range from 4.6 to 7.12. Zr-BBI also shows good fluorescence detection performance toward Cr₂O₇^2- at a low concentration with a high K_SV value up to 6.49 × 10⁴ M^-1. Moreover, by the utilization of Zr-BBI as a catalyst, Cr(VI) could be effectively photoreduced to Cr(III) in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation, in which the introduction of a hole scavenger (benzyl alcohol) could further significantly enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. Compared to that of the recently representative MOFs, the k value of the photocatalytic reaction over Zr-BBI is as high as 0.073 min^-1. With the consideration of the presented results, Zr-BBI can serve as a multifunctional platform for efficiently sensing and photoreducing Cr₂O₇^2- in an aqueous system, which fully illustrates the feasibility that introducing specific functional groups in the framework of MOFs would enhance the related photocatalytic activity.

Zinc biosorption by Dunaliella sp. AL-1: Mechanism and effects on cell metabolism

Phycoremediation is being considered as an eco-friendly and safe technology for toxics eradication from contaminated aquatic systems. The zinc biosorption capacity of Dunaliella sp. AL-1 was demonstrated. Zinc impacted cell growth and photosynthetic pigments accumulation showing exposure time and concentration-dependent effects. The investigation of the antioxidant protective response to zinc exposition proved a stimulation of guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) activity and an increased rate of total phenolics, flavonoids, condensed tannins and glutathione (GSH). The Box-Behnken design was used to optimize zinc removal conditions by Dunaliella sp. AL-1 strain. The maximum experimental zinc uptake was obtained when zinc concentration, algae dose, initial pH, and contact time were set at 25 mg/L, 0.5 g/L, 7.59 and 13 h 43 min, respectively. Under completely optimized conditions, the fraction of zinc removed intracellularly was much lower than the adsorbed on the cell surface. FTIR analysis Dunaliella sp. AL-1 biomass demonstrated that several functional groups as OH, CH₂, CO, PO, COO and CO may participate in the biosorption process. A comparative proteomic analysis through nano-HPLC coupled to LC-MS/MS, was performed from pre- and post-zinc treatments cells. Among 199 identified proteins, 60 were differentially expressed of which 41 proteins were down-regulated against 19 up-regulated ones. Target proteins have been demonstrated to be implicated in different metabolic processes mainly photosynthesis and antioxidant defenses.

Ion-capture electrodialysis using multifunctional adsorptive membranes

Technologies that can efficiently purify nontraditional water sources are needed to meet rising global demand for clean water. Water treatment plants typically require a series of costly separation units to achieve desalination and the removal of toxic trace contaminants such as heavy metals and boron. We report a series of robust, selective, and tunable adsorptive membranes that feature porous aromatic framework nanoparticles embedded within ion exchange polymers and demonstrate their use in an efficient, one-step separation strategy termed ion-capture electrodialysis. This process uses electrodialysis configurations with adsorptive membranes to simultaneously desalinate complex water sources and capture diverse target solutes with negligible capture of competing ions. Our methods are applicable to the development of efficient and selective multifunctional separations that use adsorptive membranes.

Robust cellulose-based composite adsorption membrane for heavy metal removal

Adsorptive membranes offer an effective mode to remove heavy metal ions from contaminated water, due to the synergies made possible by low-cost, high-affinity adsorbents and highly scalable filtration in one system. However, the development of adsorptive membranes is hampered by their instability in the aqueous phase and low binding affinity with a broad spectrum of heavy metals in a reasonable flux. Herein, a regenerated cellulose support membrane is strongly grafted with stable and covalent-bonded polyelectrolyte active layers synthesized by a reactive layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly method. The LBL assembled layers have been successfully tested by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy. The covalent bonding provides the membrane with long-term stability and a tunable water flux compared to a membrane assembled by electrostatic bonding. The maximum adsorption capacity of the membrane active layers can reach up to 194 mg/g, showing more efficient adsorption at lower heavy metal concentration and higher pH value of feed solution. The membrane can remove multiple ions, such as Cu, Pb, and Cd, by adsorption and is easy to be regenerated and recovered. The strong covalent bonding can extend the membrane lifetime in water purification to remove multiple heavy metals at high efficiency.

Next-Generation Ultrafiltration Membranes Enabled by Block Polymers

Reliable and equitable access to safe drinking water is a major and growing challenge worldwide. Membrane separations represent one of the most promising strategies for the energy-efficient purification of potential water sources. In particular, porous membranes are used for the ultrafiltration (UF) of water to remove contaminants with nanometric sizes. However, despite exhibiting excellent water permeability and solution processability, existing UF membranes contain a broad distribution of pore sizes that limit their size selectivity. To maximize the potential utility of UF membranes and allow for precise separations, improvements in the size selectivity of these systems must be achieved. Block polymers represent a potentially transformative solution, as these materials self-assemble into well-defined domains of uniform size. Several different strategies have been reported for integrating block polymers into UF membranes, and each strategy has its own set of materials and processing considerations to ensure that uniform and continuous pores are generated. This Review aims to summarize and critically analyze the chemistries, processing techniques, and properties required for the most common methods for producing porous membranes from block polymers, with a particular focus on the fundamental mechanisms underlying block polymer self-assembly and pore formation. Critical structure-property-performance metrics will be analyzed for block polymer UF membranes to understand how these membranes compare to commercial UF membranes and to identify key research areas for continued improvements. This Review is intended to inform readers of the capabilities and current challenges of block polymer UF membranes, while stimulating critical thought on strategies to advance these technologies.

Designing Solute-Tailored Selectivity in Membranes: Perspectives for Water Reuse and Resource Recovery

Treatment of nontraditional source waters (e.g., produced water, municipal and industrial wastewaters, agricultural runoff) offers exciting opportunities to expand water and energy resources via water reuse and resource recovery. While conventional polymer membranes perform water/ion separations well, they do not provide solute-specific separation, a key component for these treatment opportunities. Herein, we discuss the selectivity limitations plaguing all conventional membranes, which include poor removal of small, neutral solutes and insufficient discrimination between ions of the same valence. Moreover, we present synthetic approaches for solute-tailored selectivity including the incorporation of single-digit nanopores and solute-selective ligands into membranes. Recent progress in these areas highlights the need for fundamental studies to rationally design membranes with selective moieties achieving desired separations.

Opposite impacts of K+ and Ca2+ on membrane fouling by humic acid and cleaning process: Evaluation and mechanism investigation

Understanding the influences of cations on membrane fouling was important to improve the performance of membrane filtration system, however, opposite conclusions were made in different studies. Meanwhile, although the influences of cation concentration have been studied extensively, few attentions have been paid to the cation valence. To clarify it, the effects of typical cations on membrane fouling and cleaning, as well as the related mechanisms were investigated systemically in this study. K⁺ and Ca²⁺ were chosen as the representative cations, and humic acid (HA) was chosen as the membrane foulants. The results demonstrated Ca²⁺ promoted the formation of reversible fouling, meanwhile higher removal efficiency of HA could also be achieved with the assistance of filtration cake containing HA + Ca²⁺. However, K⁺ led to the formation of more recalcitrant irreversible fouling. By comparing the concentration of cations in feed and permeate, analyzing the influence of cations on size of HA flocs, and the detailed SEM, AFM and TEM observation, it could be found that different mechanisms dominated the interaction between cations and HA. The bridging effect induced by Ca²⁺ attributed to the extension of HA molecules, while the electrostatic shielding effect induced by K⁺ led to the compression of them. Moreover, the different characteristics of hydrated Ca²⁺ and K⁺ also contributed to the different structures of foulant layers formed by HA + Ca²⁺ and HA + K⁺. Given the abundance of K⁺ and Ca²⁺ in natural water, results of this study can provide valuable advice for practical membrane filtration process.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Integrated Membrane Systems

Membranes fabricated from self-assembled materials are one recent example of how polymer science has been leveraged to advance membrane technology. Due to their well-defined nanostructures, the performance of membranes made from these materials is pushing the boundaries of size-selective filtration. Still, there remains a need for higher performance and more selective membranes. The advent of functional membrane platforms that rely on mechanisms beyond steric hindrance (e.g., charge-selective membranes and membrane sorbents) is one approach to realize improved solute-solute selectivity and further advance membrane technology. To date, the lab-scale demonstration of these platforms has often relied on fabrication schemes that require extended processing times. However, in order to translate lab-scale demonstrations to larger-scale implementation, it is critical that the rate of the functionalization scheme is reconciled with membrane manufacturing rates. In this viewpoint, it is postulated that substrates lined by reactive moieties that are amenable to postfabrication modification would enable the production of membranes with controlled nanostructures while providing access to a diverse array of pore wall chemistries. A comparison of reaction and manufacturing rates suggests that mechanisms that exhibit second-order reaction rate constants of at least 1 M^-1 s^-1 are needed for roll-to-roll processing. Furthermore, for mechanisms that exhibit rate constants greater than 300 M^-1 s^-1, it may be possible to integrate multiple functional domains over the membrane surface such that useful properties emerge. These multifunctional systems can expand the capabilities of membranes when the patterned chemistries interact at the heterojunctions between domains (e.g., Janus and charge-patterned mosaic membranes) or if they exhibit cooperative responses to external operating conditions (e.g., membrane pumps).

Water Treatment: Are Membranes the Panacea?

Alongside the rising global water demand, continued stress on current water supplies has sparked interest in using nontraditional source waters for energy, agriculture, industry, and domestic needs. Membrane technologies have emerged as one of the most promising approaches to achieve water security, but implementation of membrane processes for increasingly complex waters remains a challenge. The technical feasibility of membrane processes replacing conventional treatment of alternative water supplies (e.g., wastewater, seawater, and produced water) is considered in the context of typical and emerging water quality goals. This review considers the effectiveness of current technologies (both conventional and membrane based), as well as the potential for recent advancements in membrane research to achieve these water quality goals. We envision the future of water treatment to integrate advanced membranes (e.g., mixed-matrix membranes, block copolymers) into smart treatment trains that achieve several goals, including fit-for-purpose water generation, resource recovery, and energy conservation.

Synthesis of MgO micro-rods coated with charred dextrose and its application for the adsorption of selected heavy metals from synthetic and real groundwater

MgO micro-rods supported on porous carbon were synthesized by an economical method and applied for the adsorption of three different heavy metals ions (As (III), Cd (II) and Pb (II)). Here, we used dextrose as the source of carbon during the synthesis. The synthesized material has been characterized by different techniques like XRD, TEM, FE-SEM, BET and FT-IR for the determination of various physical properties. Compared with MgO synthesized without dextrose, the carbon-supported MgO or C-MgO demonstrated consistent rod-shaped morphology, higher surface area and better absorptivity. The adsorption data were analysed using various isotherm models and the Freundlich isotherm model seemed to provide the best fit to the data. The adsorption kinetics data on the other hand was well explicated by the pseudo second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacity of C-MgO was 508.47 mg g^-1 for As (III), 566.01 mg g^-1 for Cd (II) and 476.19 mg g^-1 for Pb (II), respectively after 6 h of reaction. To check the real-life usability and efficiency of C-MgO, it was added to a groundwater sample which had 169.55 ppb of As (III) and within 20 min it was adsorbed with 99% efficiency. Reusability studies reveal that C-MgO could be used up to 6 times with more than 60% efficiency. This study shows that C-MgO has high adsorptive ability, is an economic and non-toxic material with versatile applications and can be used for groundwater remediation in real life.

High-Throughput Metal Trap: Sulfhydryl-Functionalized Wood Membrane Stacks for Rapid and Highly Efficient Heavy Metal Ion Removal

Heavy metal pollution is a severe problem worldwide. Great efforts have been devoted in developing effective and eco-friendly ways to remove heavy metal ions from contaminated water. However, challenges remain in terms of the high cost, the complex preparation processes required, low efficiency, and difficulties in scaling-up. Here, we report a sulfhydryl-functionalized wood (SH-wood) membrane featuring three-dimensional mesoporous and low-tortuosity lumens, which serve as multisite metal traps to achieve highly efficient heavy metal ion removal from wastewater. Benefiting from the unique microstructure of wood, the resulting membrane exhibits a high saturation uptake capacity of 169.5, 384.1, 593.9, and 710.0 mg·g^-1 for Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Hg²⁺ ions, respectively. Meanwhile, the SH-wood membrane can be easily regenerated at least eight times without apparent performance loss. Furthermore, stacking multilayers of the SH-wood filter is designed. Because of its high yet universal heavy metal ion absorbance capability, the multilayer SH-wood filter can effectively remove diverse heavy metal ions from real contaminated water, meeting the WHO standards while also displaying a high flux rate of 1.3 × 10³ L·m^-2·h^-1. Functionalization of PET Track-Etched Membranes by UV-Induced Graft (co)Polymerization for Detection of Heavy Metal Ions in Water

Nowadays, water quality monitoring is an essential task since environmental contamination and human exposure to heavy metals increased. Sensors that are able to detect ever lower concentrations of heavy metal ions with greater accuracy and speed are needed to effectively monitor water quality and prevent poisoning. This article shows studies of the modification of flexible track-etched membranes as the basis for the sensor with various polymers and their influence on the accuracy of detection of copper, cadmium, and lead ions in water. We report the UV-induced graft (co)polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 4-vinylpyridine (4-VPy) on poly(ethylene terephthalate) track-etched membrane (PET TeMs) and use them after platinum layer sputtering in square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SW-ASV) for detection of Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺. Optimal conditions leading to functionalization of the surface and retention of the pore structure were found. Modified membranes were characterized by SEM, FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and colorimetric analysis. The dependence of the modification method on the sensitivity of the sensor was shown. Membrane modified with polyacrylic acid (PET TeMs-g-PAA), poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PET TeMs-g-P4VPy), and their copolymer (PET TeMs-g-P4VPy/PAA) with average grafting yield of 3% have been found to be sensitive to µg/L concentration of copper, lead, and cadmium ions. Limits of detection (LOD) for sensors based on PET TeMs-g-PAA are 2.22, 1.05, and 2.53 µg/L for Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Cd²⁺, respectively. LODs for sensors based on PET TeMs-g-P4VPy are 5.23 µg/L (Cu²⁺), 1.78 µg/L (Pb²⁺), and 3.64 µg/L (Cd²⁺) µg/L. PET TeMs-g-P4VPy/PAA electrodes are found to be sensitive with LODs of 0.74 µg/L(Cu²⁺), 1.13 µg/L (Pb²⁺), and 2.07 µg/L(Cd²⁺). Thus, it was shown that the modification of membranes by copolymers with carboxylic and amino groups leads to more accurate detection of heavy metal ions, associated with the formation of more stable complexes.
