Carbon Dot-Based Composite Films for Simultaneously Harvesting Raindrop Energy and Boosting Solar Energy Conversion Efficiency in Hybrid Cells

Recent advances in solid-liquid triboelectric nanogenerator technologies, affecting factors, and applications

Converting dispersed mechanical energy into electrical energy can effectively improve the global energy shortage problem. The dispersed mechanical energy generated by liquid flow has a good application prospect as one of the most widely used renewable energy sources. Solid-liquid triboelectric nanogenerator (S-L TENG) is an inspiring device that can convert dispersed mechanical energy of liquids into electrical energy. In order to promote the design and applications of S-L TENG, it is of vital importance to understand the underlying mechanisms of energy conversion and electrical energy output affecters. The current research mainly focuses on the selection of materials, structural characteristics, the liquid droplet type, and the working environment parameters, so as to obtain different power output and meet the power supply needs of diversified scenarios. There are also studies to construct a theoretical model of S-L TENG potential distribution mechanism through COMSOL software, as well as to obtain the adsorption status of different kinds of ions with functional groups on the surface of friction power generation layer through molecular dynamics simulation. In this review, we summarize the main factors affecting the power output from four perspectives: working environment, friction power generation layer, conductive part, and substrate shape. Also summarized are the latest applications of S-L TENG in energy capture, wearable devices, and medical applications. Ultimately, this review suggests the research directions that S-L TENG should focus on in the future to enhance electrical energy output, as well as to expand the diversity of application scenarios.

Celebrating 60 Years of The Chinese University of Hong Kong: Research Highlights in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

Recent breakthroughs and advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology have profoundly impacted young-generation education, accelerated knowledge transfer to enhance the quality of life, and improved environmental and economic sustainability. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), a globally recognized education and research institute, has played a crucial role in promoting major strategic research directions in nanoscience, including translational biomedicine and information and automation technology, as well as environment and sustainability. To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of CUHK, we present this Virtual Issue that showcases the cutting-edge research at CUHK published in ACS Nano.

TMDC ternary alloy-based triboelectric nanogenerators with giant photo-induced enhancement

Multifunctional self-powered energy harvesting devices have attracted significant attention for wearable, portable, IoT and healthcare devices. In this study, we report transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) ternary alloy (Mo0.5W0.5S2)-based self-powered photosensitive vertical triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) devices, where the ternary alloy functions both as a triboelectric layer and as a photoabsorbing material. The scalable synthesis of the highly crystalline Mo0.5W0.5S2 ternary alloy can overcome the limitations of binary TMDCs (MoS2, WS2) by utilizing its superior optical characteristics, enabling this semiconductor-based TENG device to simultaneously exhibit photoelectric and triboelectric properties. Benefiting from visible light absorption, this vertical TENG device generates higher triboelectric outputs and exhibits excellent power harvesting properties under visible light illumination. The open circuit voltage and short circuit currents of the devices under illumination (410 nm, 525 μW cm-2) are enhanced by 62% and 253%, respectively, while in the darkness, a very high photoresponsivity of ∼45.5 V mW-1 (voltage mode) is exhibited, indicating the superior energy harvesting potential under ultralow illumination. Furthermore, the energy harvesting ability from regular human activities and the operation as artificial e-skin expands the multi-functionality of this TENG device, paving a pathway for simultaneous mechanical and photonic energy harvesting with self-powered sensing.

Non-planar dielectrics derived thermal and electrostatic field inhomogeneity for boosted weather-adaptive energy harvesting

Weather-adaptive energy harvesting of omnipresent waste heat and rain droplets, though promising in the field of environmental energy sustainability, is still far from practice due to its low electrical output owing to dielectric structure irrationality and unscalability. Here we present atypical upcycling of ambient heat and raindrop energy via an all-in-one non-planar energy harvester, simultaneously increasing solar pyroelectricity and droplet-based triboelectricity by two-fold, in contrast to conventional counterparts. The delivered non-planar dielectric with high transmittance confines the solar irradiance onto a focal hotspot, offering transverse thermal field propagation towards boosted inhomogeneous polarization with a generated power density of 6.1 mW m-2 at 0.2 sun. Moreover, the enlarged lateral surface area of curved architecture promotes droplet spreading/separation, thus travelling the electrostatic field towards increased triboelectricity. These enhanced pyroelectric and triboelectric outputs, upgraded with advanced manufacturing, demonstrate applicability in adaptive sustainable energy harvesting on sunny, cloudy, night, and rainy days. Our findings highlight a facile yet efficient strategy, not only for weather-adaptive environmental energy recovery but also in providing key insights for spatial thermal/electrostatic field manipulation in thermoelectrics and ferroelectrics.

Carbon dots, cellulose nanofiber, and essential oil from Torreya grandis aril added to fish scale gelatin film for tomato preservation

In this study, carbon dots (CDs), cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and essential oil nanoemulsion (EON) were extracted from the aril waste of Torreya grandis following nuts production. These three nanomaterials were formulated for the preparation of a composite film to be employed for postharvest tomato storage. Visual, microscopical and physicochemical properties of the prepared nanocomposite films were analyzed at different levels of CDs and CNF for optimization purposes. The UV absorption and antioxidant capacity of gelatin film with 10 % CDs (G/10CD) were enhanced compared with gelatin (G) film, concurrent with a reduction in water barrier capacity, water contact angle (WCA) and tensile strength (TS). Compared with G/10CD film, the WCA of gelatin film after incorporation of 10 % CDs and 3 % CNF (G/10CD/3CNF) was significantly increased by 14.5°at 55 s. In contrast, TS increased by 1.26 MPa, as well as the significant enhancement in water barrier capacity. The above composite film mixed with NEO (G/10CD/3CNF/EON) exerted further antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli. G/10CD/3CNF/EON coating effectively extended tomato shift life compared with the control group. Therefore, this new eco-friendly film presents several advantages of biodegradability, sustainability as well as multifunctional properties posing it as potential packaging material for food applications.

Plasmonic and catalytic Au NBP@AgPd nanoframes for highly efficient photocatalytic reactions

Heterogeneous metal nanostructures with excellent plasmonic performance and catalytic activity are urgently needed to realize efficient light-driven catalysis. Herein, we demonstrate the preparation of hollow Au nanobipyramid (NBP)@AgPd nanostructures by employing Au NBP@Ag nanorods as templates. The products could transform from Au NBP@AgPd nanoframes to nanocages, along with the redshift and broadening of the plasmon wavelength. Particularly, the plasmon intensity of these nanostructures remained considerable among the shape evolution process. Based on the selective absorption of CTAB, the Ag atoms on the side surfaces of the Au NBP@Ag nanorods were employed as the sacrificial templates to reduce Pd atoms through galvanic replacement. The reduced Pd and Ag atoms produced through the reduction reaction were preferably co-deposited on the corners and edges at the early stage and later deposited directly on the defect sites of the side facets, as more Ag atoms were released. The discontinued distribution of the Pd atoms gives an opportunity to etch away the Ag atoms in the cores, leading to the formation of hollow Au NBP@AgPd nanostructures after the etching process. It is worth noting that the deposition of the ultrathin AgPd nanoframe had little influence on the plasmonic properties of Au NBPs, as verified by electrodynamic simulations. The Au NBP@AgPd nanoframe showed great photocatalytic activity toward Suzuki coupling reactions under laser irradiation. Taken together, these results suggest that the hot electrons successfully transfer from Au NBP to the AgPd nanoframes to participate in the photocatalytic reactions. This study affords a promising route for the synthesis of anisotropic bimetallic nanostructures with excellent plasmonic performances.

A Review of Recent Development of Wearable Triboelectric Nanogenerators Aiming at Human Clothing for Energy Conversion

Research in the field of wearable triboelectric generators is increasing, and pioneering research into real applications of this technology is a growing need in both scientific and industry research. In addition to the two key characteristics of wearable triboelectric generators of flexibility and generating friction, features such as softness, breathability, washability, and wear resistance have also attracted a lot of attention from the research community. This paper reviews wearable triboelectric generators that are used in human clothing for energy conversion. The study focuses on analyzing fabric structure and examining the integration method of flexible generators and common fibers/yarns/textiles. Compared to the knitting method, the woven method has fewer restrictions on the flexibility and thickness of the yarn. Remaining challenges and perspectives are also investigated to suggest how to bring fully generated clothing to practical applications in the near future.

A Mutual Boosting Self-Excitation Hybrid Cell for Harvesting High Entropy Energy at 32% Efficiency

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs) are potentially promising energy conversion technologies, but they still have limitations due to their own intrinsic characteristics, including the low energy output of TENGs caused by the air breakdown effect, and external polarization voltage requirement for DEGs, which severely limit their practical applications. Herein, coupling TENG with DEG is proposed to build a mutual beneficial self-excitation hybrid generator (named TDHG) for harvesting distributed and low-quality mechanical energy (high entropy energy). Experimental results demonstrate that the output charges of this TDHG are enhanced by fivefold of that of the conventional charge-excitation TENG, and continuous operation of DEG is also realized by simple mechanical triggering. More importantly, owing to the high peak power contributed by TENG and the long output pulse duration guaranteed by DEG, the TDHG realizes a much higher energy conversion efficiency of 32% in comparison to either the TENG (3.6%) or DEG (13.2%). This work proposes a new design concept for hybridized energy harvester toward highly efficient mechanical energy harvesting.

Wild jujube-based fluorescent carbon dots for highly sensitive determination of oxalic acid

Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal treatment of wild jujube and dl-tryptophan. The structure and properties of the CDs were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and so on. The as-prepared CDs exhibit excellent excitation-independent but pH-dependent (4.0-12.0) fluorescent features and emit blue strong fluorescence under 365 nm light. Hg²⁺ can decrease the fluorescence intensity of the CDs through static quenching, while the addition of oxalic acid (OA) recovers it owing to the coordination binding between oxalic acid and Hg²⁺. Based on this, the as-prepared CDs were used as a new "off-on" fluorescent probe for highly sensitive determination of oxalic acid with a wide linear detection range of 0.1-20 mg L^-1 and a low detection limit of 0.057 mg L^-1. Moreover, the fluorescent probe was successfully applied to detect oxalic acid in tomato and cherry tomato samples with satisfactory results.

Preparation of boronic acid-modified polymer dots under mild conditions and their applications in pH and glucose detection

For the first time, boronic acid-modified polymer dots (B-PDs) were fabricated by a "synthesis-modification integration" route using polyethylenimine (PEI) and phenylboronic acid as precursors. Under optimized preparation conditions, the B-PDs exhibited an average size of 2.2 nm, good water solubility, and high fluorescence quantum yield of 8.69%. The B-PDs showed reversible fluorescence response in acid solutions (blue emissions) and alkaline solutions (green emissions). The fluorescence emissions of B-PDs demonstrated an obvious red shift with varying the pH value from 1 - 13. Moreover, glucose could assemble on the surface of B-PDs due to the reversible reaction between boronic acid and cis-diols, which resulted in a blue shift of emission wavelength and an obvious increase of FL intensity at λ_ex = 380 nm based on the aggregation-induced enhancement effect. The glucose sensing method was thus developed in the range 0.0001 - 1.0 mol L^-1. Applications to real human blood and glucose injection samples demonstrated satisfactory results. The B-PDs based on the analytical method display good selectivity, wide detection range, and simplicity in preparation and detection, implying promising applications as a practical platform for biosensing.

Tribo-charge enhanced hybrid air filter masks for efficient particulate matter capture with greatly extended service life

Face masks have been an effective and indispensable personal protective measure against particulate matter pollutants and respiratory diseases, especially the novel Coronavirus disease recently. However, disposable surgical face masks suffer from low filtration efficiency for particles ranging from nano- to micro-size, and the limited service life of ~ 4 h. Here, a nano/micro fibrous hybrid air filter mask composing of electrospun nanofibrous network and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:poly(styrenesulfonate) coated polypropylene (PP) is proposed. Furthermore, the resultant filter is supplied with tribo-charges by a freestanding sliding triboelectric nanogenerator. Through the enhanced synergistic effect of mechanical interception and electrostatic forces, the hybrid air filter demonstrates high filtration efficiency for particle size of 11.5 nm to 2.5 µm, with a 9.3-34.68% enhancement for particles of 0.3-2.5 µm compared to pristine PP, and 48-h stable filtration efficiency of 94% (0.3-0.4 µm) and 99% (1-2.5 µm) with a low pressure drop of ~110 Pa. In addition, sterilization ability of the tribo-charge enhanced air filter is demonstrated. This work provides a facile and cost-effective approach for state-of-the-art face masks toward high filtration performance of nano- to micro- particles with greatly extended service life.

Chiral carbon dots based on L/D-cysteine produced via room temperature surface modification and one-pot carbonization

Since chirality is one of the phenomena often occurring in nature, optically active chiral compounds are important for applications in the fields of biology, pharmacology, and medicine. With this in mind, chiral carbon dots (CDs), which are eco-friendly and easy-to-obtain light-emissive nanoparticles, offer great potential for sensing, bioimaging, enantioselective synthesis, and development of emitters of circularly polarized light. Herein, chiral CDs have been produced via two synthetic approaches using a chiral amino acid precursor l/d-cysteine: (i) surface modification treatment of achiral CDs at room temperature and (ii) one-pot carbonization in the presence of chiral precursor. The chiral signal in the absorption spectra of synthesized CDs originates not only from the chiral precursor but from the optical transitions attributed to the core and surface states of CDs. The use of chiral amino acid molecules in the CD synthesis through carbonization results in a substantial (up to 8 times) increase in their emission quantum yield. Moreover, the synthesized CDs show two-photon absorption which is an attractive feature for their potential bioimaging and sensing applications.

Boosting the Output Performance of the Triboelectric Nanogenerator through the Nonlinear Oscillator

The rapid development of the internet of things and autonomous vehicles requires plenty of sensors to monitor environmental conditions continuously. Hence, the high energy density and reliable power supply are demanded. The nonlinear oscillator has been widely utilized to enhance the output performance of piezoelectric and electromagnetic energy harvesters, which can operate in high-energy orbits under proper excitation frequencies. Here, the nonlinear oscillator-based triboelectric nanogenerator (NL-TENG) is proposed based on the grating structure. The mechanism to boost the output of the NL-TENG is analyzed and discussed with an electromechanical coupling model proposed, and the impacts of excitation frequency, external resistance, and spring stiffness were investigated. The peak power of the fabricated NL-TENG is 22 mW, which is 3 times enlarged compared to the traditional linear configuration. Furthermore, the stable and continuous power output of up to 244 W/m³ is demonstrated, which can power a calculator and a large quantity of light-emitting diodes persistently. This study presents a new perspective to boost the output of the TENG by utilizing the benefits from the nonlinear oscillator.

Triboelectric Nanogenerators and Hybridized Systems for Enabling Next-Generation IoT Applications

In the past few years, triboelectric nanogenerator-based (TENG-based) hybrid generators and systems have experienced a widespread and flourishing development, ranging among almost every aspect of our lives, e.g., from industry to consumer, outdoor to indoor, and wearable to implantable applications. Although TENG technology has been extensively investigated for mechanical energy harvesting, most developed TENGs still have limitations of small output current, unstable power generation, and low energy utilization rate of multisource energies. To harvest the ubiquitous/coexisted energy forms including mechanical, thermal, and solar energy simultaneously, a promising direction is to integrate TENG with other transducing mechanisms, e.g., electromagnetic generator, piezoelectric nanogenerator, pyroelectric nanogenerator, thermoelectric generator, and solar cell, forming the hybrid generator for synergetic single-source and multisource energy harvesting. The resultant TENG-based hybrid generators utilizing integrated transducing mechanisms are able to compensate for the shortcomings of each mechanism and overcome the above limitations, toward achieving a maximum, reliable, and stable output generation. Hence, in this review, we systematically introduce the key technologies of the TENG-based hybrid generators and hybridized systems, in the aspects of operation principles, structure designs, optimization strategies, power management, and system integration. The recent progress of TENG-based hybrid generators and hybridized systems for the outdoor, indoor, wearable, and implantable applications is also provided. Lastly, we discuss our perspectives on the future development trend of hybrid generators and hybridized systems in environmental monitoring, human activity sensation, human-machine interaction, smart home, healthcare, wearables, implants, robotics, Internet of things (IoT), and many other fields.
