Chiral Plasmonic Nanowaves by Tilted Assembly of Unidirectionally Aligned Block Copolymers with Buckling-Induced Microwrinkles

Chiral Kirigami for Bend-Tolerant Reconfigurable Hologram with Continuously Variable Chirality Measures

Despite the commonality of static holograms, the holography with multiple information layers and reconfigurable grey-scale images at communication frequencies remain a confluence of scientific challenges. One well-known difficulty is the simultaneous modulation of phase and amplitude of electromagnetic wavefronts with a high modulation depth. A less appreciated challenge is scrambling of the information and images with hologram bending. Here, this work shows that chirality-guided pixelation of plasmonic kirigami sheets enables tunable multiplexed holography at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The convex and concave structures with slanted Au strips exhibit gradual variations in geometries facilitating modulation of light ellipticity reaching 40 deg. Real-time switching of 3D images of the letter "M" and the Mona Lisa demonstrates the possibility of complex grey-scale information content and importance of continuously variable mirror asymmetry. Microscale chirality measures of each pixel experiences little change with bending while retaining controllable reconfigurability upon stretching, which translates to remarkable resilience of chiral holograms to bending. Simplicity of their design with local chirality measures opens the door to information technologies with fault-tolerant THz encryption, wearable holographic devices, and new communication technologies.

Roll-to-plate 0.1-second shear-rolling process at elevated temperature for highly aligned nanopatterns

The shear-rolling process is a promising directed self-assembly method that can produce high-quality sub-10 nm block copolymer line-space patterns cost-effectively and straightforwardly over a large area. This study presents a high temperature (280 °C) and rapid (~0.1 s) shear-rolling process that can achieve a high degree of orientation in a single process while effectively preventing film delamination, that can be applied to large-area continuous processes. By minimizing adhesion, normal forces, and ultimate shear strain of the polydimethylsiloxane pad, shearing was successfully performed without peeling up to 280 °C at which the chain mobility significantly increases. This method can be utilized for various high-χ block copolymers and surface neutralization processes. It enables the creation of block copolymer patterns with a half-pitch as small as 8 nm in a unidirectional way. Moreover, the 0.1-second rapid shear-rolling was successfully performed on long, 3-inch width polyimide flexible films to validate its potential for the roll-to-roll process.

Hierarchically manufactured chiral plasmonic nanostructures with gigantic chirality for polarized emission and information encryption

Chiral metamaterials have received significant attention due to their strong chiroptical interactions with electromagnetic waves of incident light. However, the fabrication of large-area, hierarchically manufactured chiral plasmonic structures with high dissymmetry factors (g-factors) over a wide spectral range remains the key barrier to practical applications. Here we report a facile yet efficient method to fabricate hierarchical chiral nanostructures over a large area (>11.7 × 11.7 cm2) and with high g-factors (up to 0.07 in the visible region) by imparting extrinsic chirality to nanostructured polymer substrates through the simple exertion of mechanical force. We also demonstrate the application of our approach in the polarized emission of quantum dots and information encryption, including chiral quick response codes and anti-counterfeiting. This study thus paves the way for the rational design and fabrication of large-area chiral nanostructures and for their application in quantum communications and security-enhanced optical communications.

Nature-Inspired Chiral Structures: Fabrication Methods and Multifaceted Applications

Diverse chiral structures observed in nature find applications across various domains, including engineering, chemistry, and medicine. Particularly notable is the optical activity inherent in chiral structures, which has emerged prominently in the field of optics. This phenomenon has led to a wide range of applications, encompassing optical components, catalysts, sensors, and therapeutic interventions. This review summarizes the imitations and applications of naturally occurring chiral structures. Methods for replicating chiral architectures found in nature have evolved with specific research goals. This review primarily focuses on a top-down approach and provides a summary of recent research advancements. In the latter part of this review, we will engage in discussions regarding the diverse array of applications resulting from imitating chiral structures, from the optical activity in photonic crystals to applications spanning light-emitting devices. Furthermore, we will delve into the applications of biorecognition and therapeutic methodologies, comprehensively examining and deliberating upon the multifaceted utility of chiral structures.

Tunable Chiral Plasmonic Activities Enabled via Stimuli Responsive Micro-Origami

Chiral plasmonic nanomaterials with distinctive circularly polarized light-dependent optical responses over a broad range of frequency have great potential for photonic and biomedical applications. However, it still remains challenging to fabricate 3D plasmonic chiral micro-constructs with readily modulated chiroptical properties over the magnitude of ellipticity, mode frequency, and switchable handedness, especially in the vis-NIR range. In this study, polymeric micro-origami-based 3D plasmonic chiral structures are constructed through self-rolling of gold  nanospheres (AuNSs)-decorated polymeric micro-sheets. Spherical AuNSs are assembled as highly ordered linear chains on 2D rectangular micro-sheets by polydimethylsiloxane-wrinkle assisted assembly. Upon rolling the micro-sheets to micro-tubules, the AuNS chains transform into 3D helices. The AuNS-assembled helices induce collective plasmonic modes propagating in a helical manner, leading to a strong chiral response over the vis-NIR range. The circular dichroism (CD) is measured to be as high as hundreds of millidegree, and the position and sign of CD peaks are actively modulated by controlling the orientated angle of AuNS chains, enabled by tuning the collective plasmonic modes. This micro-origami-based strategy incorporates the incompatible 2D assembly technique with 3D chiral structures, opening up an intriguing way toward constructing chiral plasmonic structures and modulating chiroptical effects based on responsive polymeric materials.

Chirality of Fingerprints: Pattern- and Curvature-Induced Emerging Chiroptical Properties of Elastomeric Grating Meta-Skin

Fingerprint-inspired elastomeric grating meta-skin (EGMS) is herein fabricated to investigate the chirality of fingerprints. The EGMS is made by a facile nanoimprinting method with a diffraction grating as a template using polydimethylsiloxane, followed by gold deposition. The chirality of the surface is caused by symmetry breaking, induced by the pattern (P) and curvature (T). Furthermore, the chiroptical properties of EGMS are reconfigurable through the control of the skew angle (θ), which is the angle between P and T. The chiroptical properties of a fingerprint are also shown and interpreted in this perspective. On the basis of the results, we suggest the strategy to impart chirality on the surface, which is reconfigurable by controlling P and T. It will be a useful method to produce chirality in membranes, thin films, metasurfaces, and 2D nanomaterials, as well as advance biometric recognition.
