Catalytic Metasurfaces Empowered by Bound States in the Continuum

Revealing Mode Formation in Quasi-Bound States in the Continuum Metasurfaces via Near-Field Optical Microscopy

Photonic metasurfaces offer exceptional control over light at the nanoscale, facilitating applications spanning from biosensing, and nonlinear optics to photocatalysis. Many metasurfaces, especially resonant ones, rely on periodicity for the collective mode to form, which makes them subject to the influences of finite size effects, defects, and edge effects, which have considerable negative impact at the application level. These aspects are especially important for quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) metasurfaces, for which the collective mode is highly sensitive to perturbations due to high-quality factors and strong near-field enhancement. Here, the mode formation in quasi-BIC metasurfaces on the individual resonator level using scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) in combination with a new image processing technique, is quantitatively investigated. It is found that the quasi-BIC mode is formed at a minimum size of 10 × 10-unit cells much smaller than expected from far-field measurements. Furthermore, it is shown that the coupling direction of the resonators, defects and edge states have pronounced influence on the quasi-BIC mode. This study serves as a link between the far-field and near-field responses of metasurfaces, offering crucial insights for optimizing spatial footprint and active area, holding promise for augmenting applications such as catalysis and biospectroscopy.

Mie Resonant Metal Oxide Nanospheres for Broadband Photocatalytic Enhancements

Metal oxides are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis as supports to disperse catalytically active nanoparticles, isolated atomic sites, or even as catalysts themselves. Herein, we present a method to produce optically active metal oxide supports that exhibit size-dependent Mie resonances based on TiO2 nanospheres with tunable size, crystalline phase composition, and optical properties. Mie resonant TiO2 nanospheres were used as supports to disperse Au, Pt, and Pd nanoparticles. We have found up to a 50-fold enhancement of the electric field at the metal oxide/metal interface corresponding to wavelength-dependent multipolar resonances in the TiO2 structure. Using Au/TiO2 as a prototypical photocatalyst, we demonstrate broadband rate enhancements between 400 and 800 nm during CO oxidation, with a noticeable increase below 500 nm. This increased reactivity at higher photon energies is due to improved photon utilization and interband absorption in the gold that results in greater secondary electron generation through electron-electron scattering processes, thus leading to higher rates in conjunction with the Mie scattering TiO2 support. This study not only highlights the potential of Mie resonant TiO2 in broadband photocatalytic enhancements but also for developing various Mie resonant metal oxide supports, such as ZnO or Cu2O, which can improve photocatalytic performance for a number of critical reactions. As the chemical and energy industries move toward conversion technologies driven by renewable energy sources, the strategy of designing optical resonances into oxide supports that are already widely used could enable a straightforward adaptation of photochemical processing based on traditional heterogeneous catalysts.

Plasmonic Bound States in the Continuum Metasurface-Semiconductor-Metal Architecture Enables Efficient Hot-Electron-Based Photodetector

Plasmonic hot-electron-based photodetectors (HEB-PDs) have received widespread attention for their ability to realize effective carrier collection under sub-bandgap illumination. However, due to the low hot electron emission probability, most of the existing HEB-PDs exhibit poor responsivity, which significantly restricts their practical applications. Here, by employing the binary-pore anodic alumina oxide template technique, we proposed a compact plasmonic bound state in continuum metasurface-semiconductor-metal-based (BIC M-S-M) HEB-PD. The symmetry-protected BIC can manipulate a strong gap surface plasmon in the stacked M-S-M structure, which effectively enhances light-matter interactions and improves the photoresponse of the integrated device. Notably, the optimal M-S-M HEB-PD with near-unit absorption (∼90%) around 800 nm delivers a responsivity of 5.18 A/W and an IPCE of 824.23% under 780 nm normal incidence (1 V external bias). Moreover, the ultrathin feature of BIC M-S-M (∼150 nm) on the flexible substrate demonstrates excellent stability under a wide range of illumination angles from -40° to 40° and at the curvature surface from 0.05 to 0.13 mm-1. The proposed plasmonic BIC strategy is very promising for many other hot-electron-related fields, such as photocatalysis, biosensing, imaging, and so on.

Diamond-lattice photonic crystals assembled from DNA origami

Colloidal self-assembly allows rational design of structures on the micrometer and submicrometer scale. One architecture that can generate complete three-dimensional photonic bandgaps is the diamond cubic lattice, which has remained difficult to realize at length scales comparable with the wavelength of visible or ultraviolet light. In this work, we demonstrate three-dimensional photonic crystals self-assembled from DNA origami that act as precisely programmable patchy colloids. Our DNA-based nanoscale tetrapods crystallize into a rod-connected diamond cubic lattice with a periodicity of 170 nanometers. This structure serves as a scaffold for atomic-layer deposition of high-refractive index materials such as titanium dioxide, yielding a tunable photonic bandgap in the near-ultraviolet.

Multi-band Metasurface-Driven Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy for Improved Characterization of in-Situ Electrochemical Reactions

Surface-enhanced spectroscopy techniques are the method-of-choice to characterize adsorbed intermediates occurring during electrochemical reactions, which are crucial in realizing a green and sustainable future. Characterizing species with low coverage or short lifetimes has so far been limited by low signal enhancement. Recently, single-band metasurface-driven surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) has been pioneered as a promising technology to monitor a single vibrational mode during electrochemical CO oxidation. However, electrochemical reactions are complex, and their understanding requires the simultaneous monitoring of multiple adsorbed species in situ, hampering the adoption of nanostructured electrodes in spectro-electrochemistry. Here, we develop a multi-band nanophotonic-electrochemical platform that simultaneously monitors in situ multiple adsorbed species emerging during cyclic voltammetry scans by leveraging the high resolution offered by the reproducible nanostructuring of the working electrode. Specifically, we studied the electrochemical reduction of CO2 on a Pt surface and used two separately tuned metasurface arrays to monitor two adsorption configurations of CO with vibrational bands at ∼2030 and ∼1840 cm-1. Our platform provides a ∼40-fold enhancement in the detection of characteristic absorption signals compared to conventional broadband electrochemically roughened platinum films. A straightforward methodology is outlined starting with baselining our system in a CO-saturated environment and clearly detecting both configurations of adsorption. In contrast, during the electrochemical reduction of CO2 on platinum in K2CO3, CO adsorbed in a bridged configuration could not be detected. We anticipate that our technology will guide researchers in developing similar sensing platforms to simultaneously detect multiple challenging intermediates, with low surface coverage or short lifetimes.

An elliptical nanoantenna array plasmonic metasurface for efficient solar energy harvesting

Plasmonic metasurfaces with subwavelength nanoantenna arrays have attracted much attention for their ability to control and manage optical properties. Solar absorbers are potential candidates for effectively converting photons into heat and electricity. This study introduces a novel ultrathin metasurface solar absorber employing elliptical-shaped nanoantenna arrays. We theoretically and numerically demonstrate a near-perfect broadband absorber with over 90% absorption efficiency in a wide range of wavelengths of 300-2500 nm, using finite element (FEM) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods. The proposed nanostructure configuration enhances light absorption by exciting localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) between elliptical-shaped nanoantenna gaps at many wavelengths, maintaining stability at wide incident angles and insensitivity to light polarization. Compared to other state-of-the-art absorbers with a thickness of less than 300 nm, the designed nanostructure with 260 nm thickness achieves over 90% optical absorption across a broad range of wavelengths of 300-1116 nm in air (or vacuum) environments and performs effectively under water conditions for solar energy harvesting in a range of wavelengths of 300-1436 nm, and therefore can serve as a solar evaporator. Combining refractory plasmonic titanium nitride (TiN) and semiconductor gallium nitride (GaN) nanostructures holds great potential for efficient optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications, especially in harsh and high-temperature environments like thermophotovoltaic systems. The TiN-based metasurface absorber, with its ultrathin nanostructure and suitable spectral absorption in ultraviolet-visible-infrared spectra, offers scalability and cost-effectiveness. The findings in this work will deepen our understanding of LSPRs and pave a novel path for efficient solar energy conversion.

Coupling-Based Multiple Bound States in the Continuum and Grating-Assisted Permittivity Retrieval in the Terahertz Metasurface

The terahertz (THz) metasurfaces that support bound states in the continuum (BICs) provide a promising platform for various applications due to their high Q-factor resonance. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate multiple BICs with different resonance symmetries in the THz metasurface based on mode coupling. The proposed metasurface is composed of 2 × 2 split ring resonators (SRRs) metamolecules. The SRRs of two different gap angles in the metamolecule lattice provide intrinsic resonance with different frequencies, and the coupling between them exhibits high transmission quasi-BIC resonance, which can be tuned by varying the gap angle. The arrangement of SRRs in the 2 × 2 metamolecule lattice determines the types of coupling that govern the resonance symmetry of quasi-BIC. More interestingly, the multiple quasi-BICs enabled by different couplings can be simultaneously achieved in a metasurface. Apart from tuning the gap angles, the permittivity in the vicinity of SRRs also changes the resonance frequency. Consequently, quasi-BIC can be artificially formed by deliberately constructing the permittivity difference of the dielectric environment on the SRRs. In view of this, we introduce the scheme of permittivity retrieval for the dispersive analyte, assisted by the fixed-permittivity gratings. In addition, we experimentally demonstrate the metasurface in combination with the microfluidic chip for the sensing of the glucose solution concentration. Our findings offer a possible strategy for the existing manufactured metasurface to achieve quasi-BIC resonance and provide a promising candidate for approaching the spectral analysis of the biochemical.

A Quasi-Bound States in the Continuum Dielectric Metasurface-Based Antenna-Reactor Photocatalyst

Metasurfaces are a class of two-dimensional artificial resonators, creating new opportunities for strong light-matter interactions. One type of nonradiative optical metasurface that enables substantial light concentration is based on quasi-Bound States in the Continuum (quasi-BIC). Here we report the design and fabrication of a quasi-BIC dielectric metasurface that serves as an optical frequency antenna for photocatalysis. By depositing Ni nanoparticle reactors onto the metasurface, we create an antenna-reactor photocatalyst, where the virtually lossless metasurface funnels light to drive a chemical reaction. This quasi-BIC-Ni antenna-reactor drives H2 dissociation under resonant illumination, showing strong polarization, wavelength, and optical power dependencies. Both E-field-induced electronic and photothermal heating effects drive the reaction, supported by load-dependent reactivity studies and our theoretical model. This study unlocks new opportunities for photocatalysis that employ dielectric metasurfaces for light harvesting in an antenna-reactor format.

Designing Metasurfaces for Efficient Solar Energy Conversion

Metasurfaces have recently emerged as a promising technological platform, offering unprecedented control over light by structuring materials at the nanoscale using two-dimensional arrays of subwavelength nanoresonators. These metasurfaces possess exceptional optical properties, enabling a wide variety of applications in imaging, sensing, telecommunication, and energy-related fields. One significant advantage of metasurfaces lies in their ability to manipulate the optical spectrum by precisely engineering the geometry and material composition of the nanoresonators' array. Consequently, they hold tremendous potential for efficient solar light harvesting and conversion. In this Review, we delve into the current state-of-the-art in solar energy conversion devices based on metasurfaces. First, we provide an overview of the fundamental processes involved in solar energy conversion, alongside an introduction to the primary classes of metasurfaces, namely, plasmonic and dielectric metasurfaces. Subsequently, we explore the numerical tools used that guide the design of metasurfaces, focusing particularly on inverse design methods that facilitate an optimized optical response. To showcase the practical applications of metasurfaces, we present selected examples across various domains such as photovoltaics, photoelectrochemistry, photocatalysis, solar-thermal and photothermal routes, and radiative cooling. These examples highlight the ways in which metasurfaces can be leveraged to harness solar energy effectively. By tailoring the optical properties of metasurfaces, significant advancements can be expected in solar energy harvesting technologies, offering new practical solutions to support an emerging sustainable society.

Optimizing Hot Electron Harvesting at Planar Metal-Semiconductor Interfaces with Titanium Oxynitride Thin Films

Understanding metal-semiconductor interfaces is critical to the advancement of photocatalysis and sub-bandgap solar energy harvesting where electrons in the metal can be excited by sub-bandgap photons and extracted into the semiconductor. In this work, we compare the electron extraction efficiency across Au/TiO₂ and titanium oxynitride (TiON)/TiO_2-x interfaces, where in the latter case the spontaneously forming oxide layer (TiO_2-x) creates a metal-semiconductor contact. Time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy is used to study the electron recombination rates in both cases. Unlike the nanosecond recombination lifetimes in Au/TiO₂, we find a bottleneck in the electron relaxation in the TiON system, which we explain using a trap-mediated recombination model. Using this model, we investigate the tunability of the relaxation dynamics with oxygen content in the parent film. The optimized film (TiO_0.5N_0.5) exhibits the highest carrier extraction efficiency (N_FC ≈ 2.8 × 10¹⁹ m^-3), slowest trapping, and an appreciable hot electron population reaching the surface oxide (N_HE ≈ 1.6 × 10¹⁸ m^-3). Our results demonstrate the productive role oxygen can play in enhancing electron harvesting and prolonging electron lifetimes, providing an optimized metal-semiconductor interface using only the native oxide of titanium oxynitride.

Perfect linear polarization wave generator based on quasi-bound states in the continuum

Quasi-bound states in the continuum (q-BICs) in optical metasurfaces have been found to carry special radiation polarization properties. Herein, we have studied the relationship between the radiation polarization state of a q-BIC and the polarization state of the output wave, and theoretically proposed a perfect linear polarization wave generator controlled by the q-BIC. The proposed q-BIC has an x-polarized radiation state, and the y co-polarized output wave is completely eliminated by introducing additional resonance at the q-BIC frequency. Finally, a perfect x-polarized transmission wave with very low background scattering is obtained, and the transmission polarization state is not limited by the incident polarization state. The device can be used to efficiently obtain narrowband linearly polarized waves from non-polarized waves, and can also be used for polarization-sensitive high-performance spatial filtering.

Quasi-symmetry-protected BICs in a double-notched silicon nanodisk metasurface

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) hold great promise in enhancing light-matter interaction as they have an infinite Q-factor. To date, the symmetry-protected BIC (SP-BIC) is one of the most intensively studied BICs because it is easily found in a dielectric metasurface satisfying certain group symmetry. To convert SP-BICs into quasi-BICs (QBICs), structural symmetry shall be broken so that external excitation can access them. Usually, the unit cell's asymmetry is created by removing or adding parts of dielectric nanostructures. The QBICs are usually excited only by s-polarized or p-polarized light because of the symmetry-breaking of the structure. In this work, we investigate the excited QBIC properties by introducing double notches on the edges of highly symmetrical silicon nanodisks. The QBIC shares the same optical response under the s-polarized and p-polarized light. The effect of polarization on coupling efficiency between the QBIC mode and incident light is studied, and the highest coupling efficiency occurs at a polarization angle of 135 ^∘, which corresponds to the radiative channel. Moreover, the near-field distribution and multipole decomposition confirm that the QBIC is dominated by the magnetic dipole along the z direction. It is noted that the QBIC covers a wide spectrum region. Finally, we present an experimental confirmation; the measured spectrum shows a sharp Fano resonance with a Q-factor of 260. Our results suggest promising applications in enhancing light-matter interaction, such as lasing, sensing, and nonlinear harmonic generation.

Latest Advances in Metasurfaces for SERS and SEIRA Sensors as Well as Photocatalysis

Metasurfaces can enable the confinement of electromagnetic fields on huge surfaces and zones, and they can thus be applied to biochemical sensing by using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA). Indeed, these metasurfaces have been examined for SERS and SEIRA sensing thanks to the presence of a wide density of hotspots and confined optical modes within their structures. Moreover, some metasurfaces allow an accurate enhancement of the excitation and emission processes for the SERS effect by supporting resonances at frequencies of these processes. Finally, the metasurfaces allow the enhancement of the absorption capacity of the solar light and the generation of a great number of catalytic active sites in order to more quickly produce the surface reactions. Here, we outline the latest advances in metasurfaces for SERS and SEIRA sensors as well as photocatalysis.
