Deciphering the Space Charge Effect of the p-n Junction between Copper Sulfides and Molybdenum Selenides for Efficient Water Electrolysis in a Wide pH Range

Regioselective super-assembly of Prussian blue analogue

The construction of high-asymmetrical structures demonstrates significant potential in improving the functionality and distinctness of nanomaterials, but remains a considerable challenge. Herein, we develop a one-pot method to fabricate regioselective super-assembly of Prussian blue analogue (PBA) -- a PBA anisotropic structure (PBA-AS) decorated with epitaxial modules--using a step-by-step epitaxial growth on a rapidly self-assembled cubic substrate guided by thiocyanuric acid (TCA) molecules. The epitaxial growth units manifest as diverse geometric shapes, which are predominantly concentrated on the {100}, {111}, or {100}+{111} crystal plane of the cubic substrate. The crystal plane and morphology of epitaxial module can be regulated by changing the TCA concentration and reaction temperature, enabling a high level of controllability over specific assembly sites and structures. To illustrate the advantage of the asymmetrical structure, phosphated PBA-AS demonstrates improved performance in the oxygen evolution reaction compared to simple phosphated PBA nanocube. This method offers valuable insights for designing asymmetrical nanomaterials with intricate architectures and versatile functionalities.

Rationally designing of Co-WS2 catalysts with optimized electronic structure to enhance hydrogen evolution reaction

Designing and developing cost-effective, high-performance catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for advancing hydrogen production technology. Tungsten-based sulfides (WSx) exhibit great potential as efficient HER catalysts, however, the activity is limited by the larger energy required for water dissociation under alkaline conditions. Herein, we adopt a top-down strategy to construct heterostructure Co-WS2 nanofiber catalysts. The experimental results and theoretical simulations unveil that the work functions-induced built-in electric field at the interface of Co-WS2 catalysts facilitates the electron transfer from Co to WS2, significantly reducing water dissociation energy and optimizing the Gibbs free energy of the entire reaction step for HER. Besides, the self-supported catalysts of Co-WS2 nanoparticles confining 1D nanofibers exhibit an increased number of active sites. As expected, the heterostructure Co-WS2 catalysts exhibit remarkable HER activity with an overpotential of 113 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 and stability with 30 h catalyzing at 23 mA cm-2. This work can provide an avenue for designing highly efficient catalysts applicable to the field of energy storage and conversion.

NiO/RuO2 p-n Heterojunction Nanofoam as a High-Performance Electrocatalyst for Desulfurization and Concurrent Hydrogen Evolution

The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent performance in both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and sulfide oxidation reaction (SOR) remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we experimentally synthesize a NiO/RuO2 p-n heterojunction nanofoam that exhibits highly desirable electrocatalytic properties for both the HER and the SOR. We further design an electrolytic cell by pairing alkaline HER with SOR utilizing the NiO/RuO2 heterojunction nanofoam as both the anode and the cathode, which demands a low applied voltage of 0.846 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the formation of the NiO/RuO2 p-n heterojunction nanofoam effectively regulates the electronic structure, thereby boosting the electrocatalytic performances for both HER and SOR. This work not only provides a novel strategy to prepare an efficient and stable nanofoam electrocatalyst for hydrogen production but also highlights the potential application of oxide heterojunction electrocatalysts in treating sulfur-containing waste liquid.

Unraveling the Oxidation Kinetics Through Electronic Structure Regulation of MnCo2O4.5@Ni3S2 p-n Junction for Urea-Assisted Electrocatalytic Activity

A promising strategy to boost electrocatalytic performance is via assembly of hetero-nanostructured electrocatalysts that delivers the essential specific surface area and also active sites by lowering the reaction barrier. However, the challenges associated with the intricate designs and mechanisms remain underexplored. Therefore, the present study constructs a p-n junction in a free-standing MnCo2O4.5@Ni3S2 on Ni-Foam. The space-charge region's electrical characteristics is dramatically altered by the formed p-n junction, which enhances the electron transfer process for urea-assisted electrocatalytic water splitting (UOR). The optimal MnCo2O4.5@Ni3S2 electrocatalyst results in greater oxygen evolution reactivity (OER) than pure systems, delivering an overpotential of only 240 mV. Remarkably, upon employing as UOR electrode the required potential decreases to 30 mV. The impressive performance of the designed catalyst is attributed to the enhanced electrical conductivity, greater number of electrochemical active sites, and improved redox activity due to the junction interface formed between p-MnCo2O4.5 and n-Ni3S2. There are strong indications that the in situ formed extreme-surface NiOOH, starting from Ni3S2, boosts the electrocatalytic activity, i.e., the electrochemical  surface reconstruction generates the active species. In conclusion, this work presents a high-performance p-n junction design for broad use, together with a viable and affordable UOR electrocatalyst.

Synthesis of Cu2-xSe-MoSe2 Edge-Epitaxial Heterostructure for Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The exposure of active edge sites of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) in TMD-based heterostructures is essential to enhance the catalytic activity toward electrochemical catalytic hydrogen evolution (HER). The construction of TMD-based edge-epitaxial heterostructures can maximally expose the active edge sites. However, owing to the 2D crystal structures, it remains a great challenge to vertically align layered TMDs on non-layered metal chalcogenides. Herein, the synthesis of Cu2-xSe-MoSe2 edge-epitaxial heterostructure is reported by a facile one-pot wet-chemical method. A high density of MoSe2 nanosheets grown vertically to the <111>Cu2-xSe on the surface of Cu2-xSe nanocrystals is observed. Such edge-epitaxial configuration allows the exposure of abundant active edge sites of MoSe2 and enhances the changer transfer between MoSe2 and Cu2-xSe. As a result, the obtained Cu2-xSe-MoSe2 epitaxial heterostructures show excellent HER performance as compared to that of Cu2-xSe@1T/2H-MoSe2 core@shell heterostructure with similar size. This work not only offers a novel approach for designing efficient electrochemical catalysis but also enriches the diversity of TMD-based heterostructures, holding promise for various applications in the future.

Work Function-Guided Electrocatalyst Design

The development of high-performance electrocatalysts for energy conversion reactions is crucial for advancing global energy sustainability. The design of catalysts based on their electronic properties (e.g., work function) has gained significant attention recently. Although numerous reviews on electrocatalysis have been provided, no such reports on work function-guided electrocatalyst design are available. Herein, a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements in work function-guided electrocatalyst design for diverse electrochemical energy applications is provided. This includes the development of work function-based catalytic activity descriptors, and the design of both monolithic and heterostructural catalysts. The measurement of work function is first discussed and the applications of work function-based catalytic activity descriptors for various reactions are fully analyzed. Subsequently, the work function-regulated material-electrolyte interfacial electron transfer (IET) is employed for monolithic catalyst design, and methods for regulating the work function and optimizing the catalytic performance of catalysts are discussed. In addition, key strategies for tuning the work function-governed material-material IET in heterostructural catalyst design are examined. Finally, perspectives on work function determination, work function-based activity descriptors, and catalyst design are put forward to guide future research. This work paves the way to the work function-guided rational design of efficient electrocatalysts for sustainable energy applications.

Regulating Electron Filling and Orbital Occupancy of Anti-Bonding States of Transition Metal Nitride Heterojunction for High Areal Capacity Lithium-Sulfur Full Batteries

The commercialization of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is seriously hindered by the shuttle behavior of lithium (Li) polysulfide, slow conversion kinetics, and Li dendrite growth. Herein, a novel hierarchical p-type iron nitride and n-type vanadium nitride (p-Fe2 N/n-VN) heterostructure with optimal electronic structure, confined in vesicle-like N-doped nanofibers (p-Fe2 N/n-VN⊂PNCF), is meticulously constructed to work as "one stone two birds" dual-functional hosts for both the sulfur cathode and Li anode. As demonstrated, the d-band center of high-spin Fe atom captures more electrons from V atom to realize more π* and moderate σ* bond electron filling and orbital occupation; thus, allowing moderate adsorption intensity for polysulfides and more effective d-p orbital hybridization to improve reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, this unique structure can dynamically balance the deposition and transport of Li on the anode; thereby, more effectively inhibiting Li dendrite growth and promoting the formation of a uniform solid electrolyte interface. The as-assembled Li-S full batteries exhibit the conspicuous capacities and ultralong cycling lifespan over 2000 cycles at 5.0 C. Even at a higher S loading (20 mg cm-2 ) and lean electrolyte (2.5 µL mg-1 ), the full cells can still achieve an ultrahigh areal capacity of 16.1 mAh cm-2 after 500 cycles at 0.1 C.

Electronic structure optimizing of Ru nanoclusters via Co single atom and N, S co-doped reduced graphene oxide for accelerating water electrolysis

The development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is impending for the advancement of water-splitting. In this study, we developed a novel electrocatalyst consisting of highly dispersed Ru nanoclusters ameliorated by cobalt single atoms and N, S co-doped reduced graphene oxide (CoSARuNC@NSG). Benefitted from the optimized electronic structure of the Ru nanoclusters induced by the adjacent single atomic Co and N, S co-doped RGO support, the electrocatalyst exhibits exceptional HER performance with overpotentials of 15 mV and 74 mV for achieving a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline and acidic water. The catalyst outperforms most noble metal-based HER electrocatalysts. Furthermore, the electrolyzer assembled with CoSARuNC@NSG and RuO2 demonstrated an overall voltage of 1.56 V at 10 mA cm-2 and an excellent operational stability for over 25 h with almost no attenuation. Theoretical calculations also deduce its high HER activity demonstrated by the smaller reaction energy barrier due to the optimized electronic structure of Ru nanoclusters. This strategy involving the regulation of metal nanoparticles activity through flexible single atom and GO support could provide valuable insights into the design of high-performance and low-cost HER catalysts.

Heterometallic Electrocatalysts Derived from High-Nuclearity Metal Clusters for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

The development of cost-effective electrocatalysts with an optimal surface affinity for intermediates is essential for sustainable hydrogen fuel production, but this remains insufficient. Here we synthesize Ni2P/MoS2-CoMo2S4@C heterometallic electrocatalysts based on the high-nuclearity cluster {Co24(TC4A)6(MoO4)8Cl6}, in which Ni2P nanoparticles were anchored to the surface of the MoS2-CoMo2S4@C nanosheets via strong interfacial interactions. Theoretical calculations revealed that the introduction of Ni2P phases induces significant disturbances in the surface electronic configuration of Ni2P/MoS2-CoMo2S4@C, resulting in more relaxed d-d orbital electron transfers between the metal atoms. Moreover, continuous electron transport was established by the formation of multiple heterojunction interfaces. The optimized Ni2P/MoS2-CoMo2S4@C electrocatalyst exhibited ultralow overpotentials of 198 and 73 mV for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions, respectively, in alkaline media, at 10 mA cm-2. The alkali electrolyzer constructed using Ni2P/MoS2-CoMo2S4@C required a cell voltage of only 1.45 V (10 mA cm-2) to drive overall water splitting with excellent long-term stability.

Oxalic Acid-Assisted Vacancy Engineering Promotes Iron-Copper Sulfide Nanosheets for High-Current Density Water Oxidation

The effective defect and interface coupling are pivotal for the promotion of the catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, we report novel hybrid nanosheets with sulfur vacancies composed of FeS2 and Cu39S28 grown on Cu foam (Vs-FeS2/Cu39S28). The optimal Vs-FeS2/Cu39S28 exhibits a high current output of 500 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 370 mV and robust stability for 60 h at 100 mA cm-2, surpassing the values of most previously reported Cu-based catalysts. Furthermore, a two-electrode electrolyzer made by pairing the prepared catalyst with commercial Pt/C requires a low cell voltage of 1.75 V at 100 mA cm-2 and is retained over 80 h. Key to its excellent performance is the synergism between intertwined FeS2 and Cu39S28 domains, enriched by the deliberate introduction of sulfur vacancies, thus optimizing the electronic structure and causing the proliferation of catalytic active sites. This work presents a potent Cu-based electrocatalyst and emphasizes the leveraging of non-precious metals for efficient water oxidation.

Self-propelled assembly of nanoparticles with self-catalytic regulation for tumour-specific imaging and therapy

Targeted assembly of nanoparticles in biological systems holds great promise for disease-specific imaging and therapy. However, the current manipulation of nanoparticle dynamics is primarily limited to organic pericyclic reactions, which necessitate the introduction of synthetic functional groups as bioorthogonal handles on the nanoparticles, leading to complex and laborious design processes. Here, we report the synthesis of tyrosine (Tyr)-modified peptides-capped iodine (I) doped CuS nanoparticles (CuS-I@P1 NPs) as self-catalytic building blocks that undergo self-propelled assembly inside tumour cells via Tyr-Tyr condensation reactions catalyzed by the nanoparticles themselves. Upon cellular internalization, the CuS-I@P1 NPs undergo furin-guided condensation reactions, leading to the formation of CuS-I nanoparticle assemblies through dityrosine bond. The tumour-specific furin-instructed intracellular assembly of CuS-I NPs exhibits activatable dual-modal imaging capability and enhanced photothermal effect, enabling highly efficient imaging and therapy of tumours. The robust nanoparticle self-catalysis-regulated in situ assembly, facilitated by natural handles, offers the advantages of convenient fabrication, high reaction specificity, and biocompatibility, representing a generalizable strategy for target-specific activatable biomedical imaging and therapy.

Nanomaterials: paving the way for the hydrogen energy frontier

Additionally, the article investigates the utilization of nanomaterials to enhance hydrogen production, emphasizing their role as efficient nanocatalysts in boosting hydrogen fuel cell efficiency. It provides a comprehensive overview of various nanocatalysts and their potential applications in fuel cells. The exploration extends to the realm of hydrogen transport and delivery, specifically in storage tanks and pipelines, offering insights into the nanomaterials investigated for this purpose and recent advancements in the field. In conclusion, the review underscores the immense potential of nanomaterials in propelling the hydrogen energy frontier. It emphasizes the imperative for continued research aimed at optimizing the properties and performance of existing nanomaterials while advocating for the development of novel nanomaterials with superior attributes for hydrogen storage, production, and transport. This article serves as a roadmap, shedding light on the pivotal role nanomaterials can play in advancing the development of clean and sustainable hydrogen energy technologies.

In-situ fabrication of bimetallic FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterostructure for high-efficient alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis

Rational construction of bifunctional electrocatalysts with long-term stability and high electrocatalytic activity is of great importance, but it is challenging to obtain highly efficient non-precious metal-based catalysts for overall seawater electrolysis. Herein, a nickel foam (NF) self-supporting CoFe-layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH/NF) was directly converted into FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterostructure via hydrothermal method in 50 mM Na2S solution, instead of FeCo2O4@FeCo2S4 core-shell structure. The FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterojunction shows nanosheets structure with rough surface (the thickness of ∼ 198.9 nm), which provides rich oxide/sulfide interfaces, high electrochemical active area, a large number of active sites, as well as fast charge and mass transfer. In 1.0 M KOH solution, 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl, and alkaline natural seawater, the FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterojunction exhibits eminently electrocatalytic performance, with overpotentials of η-100 = 225 mV, η-100 = 233 mV, and η-100 = 238 mV for OER, as well as η-100 = 271 mV, η-100 = 273 mV, and η-100 = 277 mV for HER, respectively. Furthermore, self-supporting FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 electrode (FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4/NF) as the cathode and anode of an electrolyzer exhibits a lower cell voltage of E-100 = 1.75 V in alkaline seawater than those of FeCo2S4/NF (1.77 V), CoFe-LDH/NF (1.87 V), and FeCo2O4/NF (1.91 V). Specifically, FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 electrolyzer can stably produce hydrogen for over 48 h in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolyte. These outstanding electrocatalytic performances and corrosion resistance to salty-water can be attributed to the surface reconstruction behavior of the FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4/NF catalyst during OER, which leads to the in-situ formation of metal oxyhydroxides. In particular, the FeCo2O4-FeCo2S4 heterojunction is also very competitive among most state-of-the-art non-noble metal-based catalysts, whether in KOH or alkaline salty-water electrolytes.

Constructing of CoP-Nb2O5 p-n heterojunction with built-in electric field to accelerate the charge migration in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Studying interfacial charge transfer is of great significance for the preparation of electrocatalysts with high activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Particularly, exploring the in-depth catalytic mechanisms and facile fabrication methods of narrow bandgap metal phosphides remains worthwhile. This work successfully combined catalytically inert n-type Nb2O5 with p-type CoP to prepare a p-n heterojunction (CoP-Nb2O5). The self-supporting heterojunction was fabricated by gas-phase phosphorization of the Co(OH)2-Nb2O5 precursor obtained through hydrothermal-electrodeposition strategy. By analyzing the electronic and band structures of CoP and Nb2O5, it was found that there exists a built-in electric field (BEF) in the heterojunction. This BEF can modulate the electronic structure of CoP at the interface, enhance its intrinsic activity and accelerate charge migration. The subsequent experimental results also demonstrate that Nb2O5 can significantly enhance the activity and stability of CoP. Our findings can serve as a novel perspective on the application of p-n heterojunction in the field of energy storage and conversion.

Three-dimensional carbon network-supported black phosphorus-cobalt heterojunctions: An efficient electrocatalyst for high-rate oxygen evolution

Black phosphorus (BP), as a burgeoning two-dimensional material, has shown good electrocatalytic activity due to its unique electronic structure and abundant active sites.However, the presence of lone pair electrons in black phosphorus leads to its poor stability and rapid degradation in an oxygen/water environment, which greatly limits its practical application. Herein, BP-Co heterojunctions were synthesized on carbon nanotube@nitrogen-doped carbon (BP-Co/CNT@NC) by the pyrolysis of ZnCo-zeolitic imidazolate frameworks and subsequent solvothermal treatment. The BP-Co Schottky junction improved the electrocatalytic stability of BP, modulated its electronic structure, improved its conductivity and electron transfer during the electrocatalytic reaction. Density functional theory calculation was used to confirm the electron transfer and redistribution at the interface between BP and Co, which constructed an oppositely charged region and formed a strong built-in field. Energy band configuration analysis revealed a narrowed band gap because of the formation of BP-Co Schottky junction. Consequently, the optimized BP-Co/CNT@NC exhibited a superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, a low overpotential of 370 mV@100 mA/cm2, with a small Tafel slope of 40 mV/dec and good long-term stability. Particularly, the catalyst has an excellent OER performance at the high current density of 100-400 mA/cm2. This strategy improves the stability of BP electrocatalysts and strengthens their utilization in electrocatalytic applications.

Deciphering the Space Charge Effect of the CoNiLDH/FeOOH n-n Heterojunction for Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Space charge transfer is an effective strategy to regulate the electron density of narrow bandgap semiconductors for enhancing electrocatalytic activity. Herein, the CoNiLDH/FeOOH n-n heterojunction hollow nanocages structure is constructed. The hollow structure provides abundant catalytic active sites and enhances mass transfer. The space charge region in the n-n heterojunction significantly promotes the adsorption of OH- and electron transfer; and the built-in electric field accelerates the electron transport, optimizes the electronic structure during the catalytic reaction process, and ensures the stability of surface charged active center sites in the heterojunction. Thus, CoNiLDH/FeOOH delivers an excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential of 250 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a small Tafel slope of 60 mV dec-1 , and superior electrocatalytic durability for 210 h at a high current density. Density functional theory calculations further verify that the space charge effect and built-in electric field in the n-n heterojunction of CoNiLDH/FeOOH can improve the electron transfer and lower the adsorption energy of OH- and the reaction energy barrier of the rate-determining step. This work provides a new fundamental understanding of the space charge effect of semiconductor heterojunction during the electrocatalytic process for developing more efficient OER electrocatalysts.

Spindle Nanorods of CeO2 and NiS Heterointerface Coated by the NC Layer: A High-Performance Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

Currently, nickel sulfides are widely employed in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), thanks to the narrow electronegativity difference of only 0.67 eV between nickel and sulfur. Among them, NiS stands out in terms of the OER performance; however, its HER performance and stability remain somewhat inadequate. The construction of heterogeneous interfaces can efficiently improve the HER performance and regulate the electronic structure of the NiS catalyst. CeO2 has been discovered to possess exceptional electronic modulation capabilities, which may lead to the effective enhancement of both HER and OER of the NiS catalyst. As a result, a nitrogen-doped carbon-coated CeO2-NiS heterogeneous interface catalyst (NC/NiS-CeO2) is designed as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for HER and OER with high performance. The NC/NiS-CeO2 catalyst demonstrates excellent HER (47 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and OER (92 mV at 10 mA cm-2) performances in a 1 M KOH alkaline solution. Characterization analysis reveals that the coupling of the heterostructure interface, which consists of CeO2 and NiS, significantly enhances electron conduction, the synergistic effect, and the electrocatalytic activity of the electrode. This study demonstrates that the HER and OER activity can be effectively improved by constructing a rational heterogeneous interface.

Enhanced charge transfer and photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction of copper sulphide@cerium dioxide p-n heterojunction hollow cubes

Hollow structure hybrids have gained considerable attention for their ability to reduce CO2 owing to their rich active sites, high gas adsorption ability, and excellent light utilization capacity. Herein, a template-engaged strategy was provided to fabricate copper sulphide@cerium dioxide (CuS@CeO2) p-n heterojunction hollow cube photocatalysts using Cu2O cubes as a sacrificial template. The sequential steps of loading of CeO2 nanolayer, sulfidation, and etching reaction facilitate the formation of CuS@CeO2 p-n heterojunction hollow cubes. Compared with the single CuS, CeO2, and their physical mixture, the CuS@CeO2 p-n heterojunction hollow cube photocatalyst expresses a higher performance toward photocatalytic CO2 reduction under solid-gas reaction conditions due to the faster separation of photogenerated charges. The further enhanced performance of CuS@CeO2 p-n heterojunction hollow cubes was achieved by decorating pt nanoparticles due to the fact that Pt nanoparticles had a high electron affinity and CO2 adsorption capacity, and the highest CO and CH4 yields of the optimized hybrid reached 195.8 μmol g-1 h-1 and 19.96 μmol g-1 h-1, respectively. This work might provide a strategy for designing and synthesizing efficient hollow heterostructured photocatalysts for solar energy conversion and utilization.

Enhancing Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance in Prussian Blue Analogues: Triple-Play of Metal Exsolution, Hollow Interiors, and Anionic Regulation

Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) are promising catalysts for green hydrogen production. However, the rational design of high-performing PBAs is challenging, which requires an in-depth understanding of the catalytic mechanism. Here FeMn@CoNi core-shell PBAs are employed as precursors, together with Se powders, in low-temperature pyrolysis in an argon atmosphere. This synthesis method enables the partial dissociation of inner FeMn PBAs that results in hollow interiors, Ni nanoparticles (NPs) exsolution to the surface, and Se incorporation onto the PBA shell. The resulting material presents ultralow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential (184 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ) and low Tafel slope (43.4 mV dec-1 ), outperforming leading-edge PBA-based electrocatalysts. The mechanism responsible for such a high OER activity is revealed, assisted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the surface examination before and after the OER process. The exsolved Ni NPs are found to help turn the PBAs into Se-doped core-shell metal oxyhydroxides during the OER, in which the heterojunction with Ni and the Se incorporation are combined to improve the OER kinetics. This work shows that efficient OER catalysts could be developed by using a novel synthesis method backed up by a sound understanding and control of the catalytic pathway.

Synergistically Regulating the Electronic Structure of CoS by Cation and Anion Dual-Doping for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Precisely regulating the electronic construction of the reactive center is an essential method to improve the electrocatalysis, but achieving efficient multifunctional characteristics remains a challenge. Herein, CoS sample dual-doped by Cu and F atoms, as bifunctional electrocatalyst, is designed and synthesized for water electrolysis. According to the experimental results, Cu atom doping can perform primary electronic adjustment and obtain bifunctional properties, and then the electronic structure is adjusted for the second time to achieve an optimal state by introducing F atom. Meanwhile, this dual-doping strategy will result in lattice distortion and expose more active sites. As expected, dual-doped Cu-F-CoS show the brilliant electrocatalytic activity, revealing ultralow overpotentials (59 mV for HER, 213 mV for OER) at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline electrolyte. Besides, it also exhibits distinguished water electrolysis activity with cell voltage as low as 1.52 V at 10 mA cm-2 . Our work can provide an atomic-level perception for adjusting the electronic construction of reactive sites by means of dual-doping engineering and put forward a contributing path for the electrocatalysts with multifunctional designing.

Integrated Design of a Dual-Mode Colorimetric Sensor Driven by Enzyme-like Activity Regulation Strategy for Ultratrace and Portable Detection of Hg2

Colorimetric analysis for mercury detection has great application potential in the prevention of health damage caused by mercury in the environment. Sensitivity, selectivity, and portability are core competencies of sensors, and concentrating these properties in a single sensor for efficient mercury detection remains a great challenge. Herein, a hollow structure CuS@CuSe@PVP (CCP) was prepared in which the enzyme-like activities could be activated by Hg2+ due to the antagonism between Hg and Se, inspiring the establishment of a colorimetric method for Hg2+ detection. As for Hg2+ detection performance, the linear range (LR) and limit of detection (LOD) were 1-900 and 0.81 nM in the POD-like activity system, respectively. Also, 5-550 nM of LR and 2.34 nM of LOD were achieved in the OD-like activity system. Further, a smartphone-mediated portable RGB nanosensor was fabricated, with a LOD down to 6.65 nM in the POD-like system and 7.97 nM in the OD-like system. Moreover, the excellent self-calibration and satisfactory recovery of 94.77%-106.16% were shown in the application of real water samples analysis. This study represented advanced progress toward emerging applications of nanozymes with multiple enzyme-like activities in heavy metal detection and will accelerate the development of efficient and portable heavy metal sensors.

Rational Design of Goethite-Sulfide Nanowire Heterojunctions for High Current Density Water Splitting

The preparation of efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for electrochemical overall water splitting (OWS) to scale up commercial hydrogen production remains a great challenge. Here, we synthesized heterojunction structures consisting of Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ nanowire arrays and amorphous goethite (FeOOH, α-phase) particles as efficient OWS catalysts using an interface engineering strategy. The interfacial charge inhomogeneity caused by the heterojunction contact leads to the generation of a built-in electric field, which makes the electron-deficient FeOOH and electron-rich Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ favorable for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction, respectively, thus ensuring the excellent activity of FeOOH/Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ as a bifunctional catalyst. FeOOH/Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ exhibits impressive catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction, achieving an ultralarge current density of 1000 mA cm^-2 needed as low as 265 mV overpotential, and its stability was tested up to 1440 h. Furthermore, an excellent OWS output (1.55 V to generate 10 mA cm^-2) is achieved by the bifunctional FeOOH/Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ catalysts.

Surface and near-surface engineering design of transition metal catalysts for promoting water splitting

Transition metal catalysts are widely used in the field of hydrogen production via water electrolysis. The surface state and near-surface environment of the catalysts greatly affect the efficiency of hydrogen production. Therefore, the rational design of surface engineering and near-surface engineering of transition metal catalysts can significantly improve the performance of water electrolysis. This review systematically introduces surface engineering strategies, including heteroatom doping, vacancy engineering, strain regulation, heterojunction effect, and surface reconstruction. These strategies optimize the surface electronic structure of the catalysts, expose more active sites, and promote the formation of highly active species, ultimately enhancing water electrolysis performance. Furthermore, near-surface engineering strategies, such as surface wettability, three-dimensional structure, high-curvature structure, external field assistance, and extra ion addition, are thoroughly discussed. These strategies expedite the mass transfer of reactants and gas products, improve the local chemical environment near the catalyst surface, and contribute toward achieving an industrial-level current density for overall water splitting. Finally, the key challenges faced by surface engineering and near-surface engineering of transition metal catalysts are highlighted and potential solutions are proposed. This review offers essential guidelines for the design and development of efficient transition metal catalysts for water electrolysis.

In situ phosphoselenization induced heterointerface engineering endow NiSe2/Ni2P/FeSe2 hollow nanocages with efficient water oxidation electrocatalysis performance

Exploiting Earth-abundant and highly effective electrocatalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for boosting water splitting efficiency. Herein, we proposed a novel in situ phosphoselenization strategy to fabricate heterostructured NiSe₂/Ni₂P/FeSe₂ (NiFePSe) nanocages with a modified electronic structure and well-defined nanointerfaces. Owing to the strong interfacial coupling and synergistic effect among the three components, the prepared NiFePSe nanocages exhibit superior OER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 242 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and a small Tafel slope of 55.8 mV dec^-1 along with robust stability in 1 M KOH. Remarkably, the highly open 3D porous architecture, delicate internal voids, and numerous surface defects endow the NiFePSe nanocages with abundant active sites and enhanced electron mobility. In addition, the super-hydrophilic surface is conducive to facilitating mass transfer between the electrolyte and electrode and rapidly releasing the bubbles. This work may lead to new breakthroughs in the tuning of multi-component transition metal catalysts and the designing of highly active and durable materials for water splitting.

Ir Nanoparticles Anchored on Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Overall Water Splitting under pH-Universal Conditions

The construction of high-activity and low-cost electrocatalysts is critical for efficient hydrogen production by water electrolysis. Herein, we developed an advanced electrocatalyst by anchoring well-dispersed Ir nanoparticles on nickel metal-organic framework (MOF) Ni-NDC (NDC: 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic) nanosheets. Benefiting from the strong synergy between Ir and MOF through interfacial Ni-O-Ir bonds, the synthesized Ir@Ni-NDC showed exceptional electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting in a wide pH range, superior to commercial benchmarks and most reported electrocatalysts. Theoretical calculations revealed that the charge redistribution of Ni-O-Ir bridge induced the optimization of H₂ O, OH* and H* adsorption, thus leading to the accelerated electrochemical kinetics for HER and OER. This work provides a new clue to exploit bifunctional electrocatalysts for pH-universal overall water splitting.

Regulating the Active Sites of Metal-Phthalocyanine at the Molecular Level for Efficient Water Electrolysis: Double Deciphering of Electron-Withdrawing Groups and Bimetallic

Implementing a molecular modulation strategy for metallic phthalocyanines (MPc) without losing the activity of the metal center and inducing a multifunction characteristic in electrocatalytic remains a challenge. Herein, a series of 2D CuCo bimetallic polymerized phthalocyanine modified with strong electron-withdrawing groups (CuCoPc-g, g = F, Cl, Br, NO₂ ) for water oxidation in the alkaline electrolyte is designed and simply synthesized. The experimental results testify that the bimetallic design can perform electronic adjustment once and introduce the second active sites to get bifunctional characteristics, and then the electronic structure of the active center can be regulated by electron-withdrawing groups for a second time to achieve the optimal state. These electrons that transfer in the active center of inner metal can generate space-charged regions and the design of the polymer can stabilize active site region to maintain long-term electrolytic stability and high activity. This study precisely regulates the electronic structure of MPc at the molecular level and provides insight into the multifunctional design of polymeric macrocyclic electrocatalysts.

Construction of Cobalt Molybdenum Diselenide Three-phase Heterojunctions for Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution in Acid Medium

Molybdenum diselenide and cobalt diselenide have been commonly implemented in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, there have been few research on the creation of their three-phase heterojunctions and the associated HER process. Herein, we constructed a three-phase heterostructure sample consisting of orthorhombic CoSe₂ , cubic CoSe₂ and MoSe₂ and we investigated its HER performance. The sample shows microsphere morphology composed of nanosheets with interfacial interactions between the components. It possesses an overpotential of -136 mV at -10 mA cm^-2 in acid medium, which is superior to that of single component and most two-phase heterostructures. Especially, the overpotential at -200 mA cm^-2 is smaller than that of Pt/C. The excellent performance can be attributed to the d-orbital upshift of the Co active sites due to charge redistribution between the three-phase heterojunction and the optimization of the hydrogen free energy. This work provides inspiration for exploring the application of other multi-component heterojunctions in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
