Enabling Solution Processable COFs through Suppression of Precipitation during Solvothermal Synthesis

Dynamic Cleavage-Remodeling of Covalent Organic Networks into Multidimensional Superstructures

Superstructures with complex hierarchical spatial configurations exhibit broader structural depth than single hierarchical structures and the associated broader application prospects. However, current preparation methods are greatly constrained by cumbersome steps and harsh conditions. Here, for the first time, a concise and efficient thermally responsive dynamic synthesis strategy for the preparation of multidimensional complex superstructures within soluble covalent organic networks (SCONs) with tunable morphology from 0D hollow supraparticles to 2D films is presented. Mechanism study reveals the thermally responsive dynamic "cleavage-remodeling" characteristics of SCONs, synthesized based on the unique bilayer structure of (2.2)paracyclophane, and the temperature control facilitates the process from reversible solubility to reorganization and construction of superstructures. Specifically, during the process, the oil-water-emulsion two-phase interface can be generated through droplet jetting, leading to the preparation of 0D hollow supraparticles and other bowl-like complex superstructures with high yield. Additionally, by modulating the volatility and solubility of exogenous solvents, defect-free 2D films are prepared relying on an air-liquid interface. Expanded experiments further confirm the generalizability and scalability of the proposed dynamic "cleavage-remodeling" strategy. Research on the enrichment mechanism of guest iodine highlights the superior kinetic mass transfer performance of superstructural products compared to single-hierarchical materials.

Single-Atom Iron Catalysts with Core-Shell Structure for Peroxymonosulfate Oxidation

The chemical tolerance of ketoenamine covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is excellent; however, the tight crystal structure and low surface area limit their applications in the field of catalysis. In this work, a porous single-atom iron catalyst (FeSAC) with a core-shell structure and high surface area was synthesized by using Schiff base COF nanospheres as the core and ketoenamine COF nanosheets growth on the surfaces. Surface defects were created using sodium cyanoborohydride etching treatment to increase specific surface area. The dye degradation experiments by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalyzed by the FeSAC proved that methylene blue can be degraded with a degradation rate constant of 0.125 min-1 under the conditions of 0.1 g L-1 catalyst dosage and 0.05 g L-1 peroxymonosulfate. The FeSAC/PMS system effectively degrades various pollutants in the pH range of 4-10 with over 80% efficiency for four cycles and can be recovered by soaking in iron salt solution. Free radical quenching experiments confirmed that singlet oxygen and superoxide radicals are the main active species for catalysis.

Scalable Fabrication of Ionic-Conductive Covalent Organic Framework Fibers for Capturing of Sustainable Osmotic Energy

High-performance covalent organic framework (COF) fibers are demanded for an efficient capturing of blue osmotic power because of their excellent durability, simple integration, and large scalability. However, the scalable production of COF fibers is still very challenging due to the poor solubility and fragile structure of COFs. Herein, for the first time, it is reported that COF dispersions can be continuously processed into macroscopic, meter-long, and pure COF fibers using a wet spinning approach. The two presented COF fibers can be directly used for capturing of osmotic energy, avoiding the production of composite materials that require other additives and face challenges such as phase separation and environmental issues induced by the additives. A COF fiber exhibits power densities of 70.2 and 185.3 W m-2 at 50-fold and 500-fold salt gradients, respectively. These values outperform those of most reported systems, which indicate the high potential of COF fibers for capturing of blue osmotic energy.

A review of recent advancement in covalent organic framework (COFs) synthesis and characterization with a focus on their applications in antibacterial activity

The primary objective of this review is to present a comprehensive examination of the synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial applications of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). COFs represent a distinct category of porous materials characterized by a blend of advantageous features, including customizable pore dimensions, substantial surface area, and adaptable chemical properties. These attributes position COFs as promising contenders for various applications, notably in the realm of antibacterial activity. COFs exhibit considerable potential in the domain of antibacterial applications, owing to their amenability to functionalization with antibacterial agents. The scientific community is actively exploring COFs that have been imbued with metal ions, such as copper or silver, given their observed robust antibacterial properties. These investigations strongly suggest that COFs could be harnessed effectively as potent antibacterial agents across a diverse array of applications. Finally, COFs hold immense promise as a novel class of materials for antibacterial applications, shedding light on the synthesis, characterization, and functionalization of COFs tailored for specific purposes. The potential of COFs as effective antibacterial agents beckons further exploration and underscores their potential to revolutionize antibacterial strategies in various domains.

COF-Based Photocatalysts for Enhanced Synthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide

Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs), with their intrinsic structural regularity and modifiable chemical functionality, have burgeoned as a pivotal material in the realm of photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) synthesis. This article reviews the recent advancements and multifaceted approaches employed in using the unique properties of COFs for high-efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production. We first introduced COFs and their advantages in the photocatalytic synthesis of H2O2. Subsequently, we spotlight the principles and evaluation of photocatalytic H2O2 generation, followed by various strategies for the incorporation of active sites aiming to optimize the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers. Finally, we explore the challenges and future prospects, emphasizing the necessity for a deeper mechanistic understanding and the development of scalable and economically viable COF-based photocatalysts for sustainable H2O2 production.

Fully integrated wearable microneedle biosensing platform for wide-range and real-time continuous glucose monitoring

Wearable microneedle sensors for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) have great potential for clinical impact by allowing access to large data sets to provide individualized treatment plans. To date, their development has been challenged by the accurate wide linear range tracking of interstitial fluid (ISF) glucose (Glu) levels. Here, we present a CGM platform consisting of a three-electrode microneedle electrochemical biosensor and a fully integrated radio-chemical analysis system. The long-term performance of the robust CGM on diabetic rats was achieved by electrodepositing Prussian blue (PB), and crosslinking glucose oxidase (GOx) and chitosan to form a 3D network using glutaraldehyde (GA). After redox by GOx, PB rapidly decomposes hydrogen peroxide and mediates charge transfer, while the 3D network and graphite powder provide enrichment and release sites for Glu and catalytic products, enabling a sensing range of 0.25-35 mM. Microneedle CGM has high sensitivity, good stability, and anti-interference ability. In diabetic rats, CGM can accurately monitor Glu levels in the ISF in real-time, which are highly consistent with levels measured by commercial Glu meters. These results indicate the feasibility and application prospects of the PB-based CGM for the clinical management of diabetes. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This study addresses the challenge of continuous glucose monitoring system design where the narrow linear range of sensing due to the miniaturization of sensors fails to meet the monitoring needs of clinical diabetic patients. This was achieved by utilizing a three-dimensional network of glutaraldehyde cross-linked glucose oxidase and chitosan. The unique topology of the 3D network provides a large number of sites for glucose enrichment and anchors the enzyme to the sensing medium and the conductive substrate through covalent bonding, successfully blocking the escape of the enzyme and the sensing medium and shortening the electron transfer and transmission path.

Recent bio-applications of covalent organic framework-based nanomaterials

Appearing as a new class of functional organic materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have aroused a huge wave of interest in versatile fields ever since they were first proposed in 2005. Thanks to but not limited to their ultralight weights, high surface areas, ordered channels, variable functional groups and well-defined crystal structures, the applications of COF-based biomaterials in the fields of drug loading and delivery, photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, bioimaging, etc. are comprehensively summarized and introduced. The existing challenges and future prospects for this emerging but hot research direction are also discussed. It is hoped that this review will serve as a guidance for future research on COFs as multifunctional bioplatforms.

Aqueous Sol-Gel Synthesis and Shaping of Covalent Organic Frameworks

The intrinsic fragility and insoluble nature of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have strongly impeded their processability for practical applications. Herein, an aqueous-based sol-gel synthetic strategy is reported for the synthesis and shaping of COFs with task-specific applications that satisfy the principles of green chemistry for gram-scale production of crystalline materials. Our successful approach involves three pivotal aspects: the "prodrug mimic" design of water-soluble monomers, the utilization of hydrolyzable bonds, and the manipulation of reaction kinetics. The generality of the method is demonstrated by the successful preparation of representative high-surface area two-dimensional (2D) COFs with several commonly used amines. By virtue of this strategy, a COF colloidal dispersion is achieved and can be formulated into processable fluids, structured films, and COF monoliths. Remarkably, the obtained lightweight (∼0.020 g cm-3) and robust aerogels displayed outstanding adsorption capacity (exceeding 57 times its own weight) toward a variety of organic solvents and exhibited superior thermal insulating properties compared to the widely used sponge and cotton. This work demonstrates a versatile strategy for the synthesis and shaping of processable COF materials in water that will contribute to the development of COF monoliths for advanced applications.

High-Performance Ethylene Glycol Sensor Based on Imine Covalent Organic Frameworks

The colorless and odorless ethylene glycol is prone to unknowingly causing poisoning, making preventive monitoring of ethylene glycol necessary. In this paper, scandium (III) trifluoromethanesulfonate was used as a catalyst to successfully prepare covalent organic framework (COF) nanospheres linked by imines at room temperature. The COF nanospheres were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, UV-Vis and BET. The results show that COF nanospheres have rough surfaces and a large number of mesoporous structures, which greatly increase the active sites on the surface of the sensing material and enhance the gas sensing performance. The sensing results showed that the prepared imine-conjugated COF nanospheres exhibited a good response-recovery ability for 10 consecutive response-recovery cycles for ethylene glycol at room temperature and had a theoretical detection limit of 40 ppb. In addition, the responses of COF nanospheres to nearly 20 interfering gases, including HCl, HNO3, phenol, formaldehyde and aniline, are relatively low compared to the response to ethylene glycol, indicating that the COF nanospheres have high selectivity towards ethylene glycol. The COF nanospheres show good sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of ethylene glycol, which should be attributed to the large specific surface area, hydrogen bonding interactions, and high defects. This work provides an effective method for the detection of ethylene glycol and expands the application field of COF materials.

Highly Flexible Dielectric Films from Solution Processable Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are known to be a promising class of materials for a wide range of applications, yet their poor solution processability limits their utility in many areas. Here we report a pore engineering method using hydrophilic side chains to improve the processability of hydrazone and β-ketoenamine-linked COFs and the production of flexible, crystalline films. Mechanical measurements of the free-standing COF films of COF-PEO-3 (hydrazone-linked) and TFP-PEO-3 (β-ketoenamine-linked), revealed a Young's modulus of 391.7 MPa and 1034.7 MPa, respectively. The solubility and excellent mechanical properties enabled the use of these COFs in dielectric devices. Specifically, the TFP-PEO-3 film-based dielectric capacitors display simultaneously high dielectric constant and breakdown strength, resulting in a discharged energy density of 11.22 J cm-3 . This work offers a general approach for producing solution processable COFs and mechanically flexible COF-based films, which hold great potential for use in energy storage and flexible electronics applications.

Synthesis and Additive Manufacturing of Hydrazone-Linked Covalent Organic Framework Aerogels

Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are crystalline, porous organic materials. Recent studies have demonstrated novel processing strategies for COFs to form adaptable architectures, but these have focused primarily on imine-linked COFs. This work presents a new synthesis and processing route to produce crystalline hydrazone-linked COF gels and aerogels with hierarchical porosity. The method was implemented to produce a series of hydrazone-linked COFs with different alkyl side-chain substituents, achieving control of the hydrophilicity of the final aerogel. Variation in the length of the alkyl substituents yielded materials with controllable form factors that can preferentially adsorb water or nonpolar organic solvents. Additionally, a method for additive manufacturing of hydrazone-linked COFs using hydroxymethylcellulose as a sacrificial additive is presented. This work demonstrates an effective and simple approach to the fabrication of hydrazone COF aerogels and additive manufacturing to produce hydrazone COFs of desired shape.

Solutions Are the Problem: Ordered Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework Films by Chemical Vapor Deposition

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a promising class of crystalline polymer networks that are useful due to their high porosity, versatile functionality, and tunable architecture. Conventional solution-based methods of producing COFs are marred by slow reactions that produce powders that are difficult to process into adaptable form factors for functional applications, and there is a need for facile and fast synthesis techniques for making crystalline and ordered covalent organic framework (COF) thin films. In this work, we report a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach utilizing co-evaporation of two monomers onto a heated substrate to produce highly crystalline, defect-free COF films and coatings with hydrazone, imine, and ketoenamine COF linkages. This all-in-one synthesis technique produces highly crystalline, 40 nm-1 μm-thick COF films on Si/SiO2 substrates in less than 30 min. Crystallinity and alignment were proven by using a combination of grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and successful conversion of the monomers to produce the target COF was supported by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis measurements. Additionally, we used atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the growth mechanisms of these films, showing the coalescence of triangular crystallites into a smooth film. To show the wide applicability and scope of the CVD process, we also prepared crystalline ordered COF films with imine and ketoenamine linkages. These films show potential as high-quality size exclusion membranes, catalytic platforms, and organic transistors.

Squaraine-linked zwitterionic COF modified LLZTO nanoparticles for high performance polymer composite electrolytes in Li-S batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are severely restricted for practical application due to the polysulfide shuttle effect, Li dendrites and thermal runaway. The use of PEO-based polymer composite electrolytes (PCEs) as an alternative strategy suffers from limited lithium-ion conductivity with deficient long-range transfer route. Herein, Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) nanoparticles modified with an in situ-synthesized zwitterionic covalent organic framework layer (denoted as LLZTO@HUT4) were introduced into PEO-based PCEs. Zwitterionic HUT4 modified the lithiophobic LiOH/Li2CO3 layer on the surface of LLZTO nanoparticles, which could notably promote Li+ ion transport for superior electrochemical performance of PCEs. Additionally, the intermediate layer HUT4 located between LLZTO and PEO could further improve the mechanical properties of electrolytes due to the enhanced inorganic/organic interface compatibility and intermolecular interaction. As a result, the obtained LLZTO@HUT4-15%/PEO electrolyte exhibited a competent ionic conductivity of 0.73 mS cm-1 with a Li+ transference number of up to 0.74 at 60 °C. The assembled S@CNT|LLZTO@HUT4-15%/PEO|Li coin cell delivered a considerable initial discharge capacity of 1018 mA h g-1 at 0.2 C, with approximately 92.1% capacity retention after 100 cycles, elucidating an obviously suppressed shuttle effect.
