Vertically Aligned Bismuthene Nanosheets on MXene for High-Performance Capacitive Deionization

Long-Lifespan Fibrous Aqueous Ni//Bi Battery Enabled by Bi2O3-Bi2S3 Hierarchical Heterostructures

Bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) materials are considered as great promising anodes for aqueous batteries on account of the high capacity as well as wide potential plateau. Nevertheless, the low conductivity and severe volumetric change of Bi2O3 in the course of cycling are the main limiting factors for their application in energy-storage systems. Herein, we propose and design unique hierarchical heterostructures constructed by Bi2O3 and Bi2S3 nanosheets (NSs) manufactured immediately on the surface of carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs). The Bi2O3-Bi2S3 (BO-BS) exhibits enhanced conductivity and increased stability in comparison with pure Bi2O3 and Bi2S3. The BO-BS NSs/CNTF electrode indicates exceptional rate capability and cycling stability, while creating a high reversible capacity of 0.68 mAh cm-2 at 4 mA cm-2, as anticipated. Additionally, the quasi-solid-state fibrous aqueous Ni//Bi battery that was built with the BO-BS NSs/CNTF anode delivers an exceptional cycling stability of 52.7% capacity retention after 4000 cycles at 80 mA cm-2, an ultrahigh capacity of 0.35 mAh cm-2 at 4 mA cm-2, and a high energy density of 340.1 mWh cm-3 at 880 mW cm-3. This work demonstrates the potential of constructing hierarchical heterostructures of bismuth-based materials for high-performance aqueous Ni//Bi batteries and other energy-storage devices.

Two-dimensional/three-dimensional hierarchical self-supporting potassium ammonium vanadate@MXene hybrid film for superior performance aqueous zinc ion batteries

Currently, aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have grown to be a good choice for large-scale energy storage systems due to their high theoretical specific capacity, low redox potential, low cost, and non-toxicity of the aqueous electrolyte. However, it is still challenging to obtain high specific capacity and stability suitable cathodes. Herein, hierarchical self-supporting potassium ammonium vanadate@MXene (KNVO@MXene) hybrid films were prepared by vacuum filtration method. Due to the three-dimensional nanoflower structure of KNVO with dual ions intercalation, high conductivity of two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene, and the hierarchical self-supporting structure, the AZIB based on the KNVO@MXene hybrid film cathode possessed superior specific capacity (481 mAh/g at 0.3 A/g) and cycling stability (retaining 125 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A/g). In addition, the storage mechanism was revealed by various ex-situ characterizations. Hence, a new viewpoint for the preparation of AZIB self-supporting cathode materials is presented.

Reactive P and S co-doped porous hollow nanotube arrays for high performance chloride ion storage

Developing stable, high-performance chloride-ion storage electrodes is essential for energy storage and water purification application. Herein, a P, S co-doped porous hollow nanotube array, with a free ion diffusion pathway and highly active adsorption sites, on carbon felt electrodes (CoNiPS@CF) is reported. Due to the porous hollow nanotube structure and synergistic effect of P, S co-doped, the CoNiPS@CF based capacitive deionization (CDI) system exhibits high desalination capacity (76.1 mgCl- g-1), fast desalination rate (6.33 mgCl- g-1 min-1) and good cycling stability (capacity retention rate of > 90%), which compares favorably to the state-of-the-art electrodes. The porous hollow nanotube structure enables fast ion diffusion kinetics due to the swift ion transport inside the electrode and the presence of a large number of reactive sites. The introduction of S element also reduces the passivation layer on the surface of CoNiP and lowers the adsorption energy for Cl- capture, thereby improving the electrode conductivity and surface electrochemical activity, and further accelerating the adsorption kinetics. Our results offer a powerful strategy to improve the reactivity and stability of transition metal phosphides for chloride capture, and to improve the efficiency of electrochemical dechlorination technologies.

Ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon Ti3C2Tx-TiN heterostructure derived from ZIF-8 nanoparticles sandwiched MXene for high-performance capacitive deionization

Rational design of high-performance electrode materials is crucial for enhancing desalination performance of capacitive deionization (CDI). Here, ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon/Ti3C2Tx-TiN (NC/MX-TiN) heterostructure was developed by pyrolyzing zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles sandwiched MXene (ZSM), which were formed by assembling ultrafine ZIF-8 nanoparticles with size of 20 nm on both sides of MXene nanosheets. The introduction of ultrasmall ZIF-8 particles allowed for in situ nitridation of the MXene during pyrolysis, forming consecutive TiN layers tightly connected to the internal MXene. The two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure exhibited remarkable properties, including high specific surface area and excellent conductivity. Additionally, the resulting TiN demonstrated exceptional redox capability, which significantly enhanced the performance of CDI and ensured cycling stability. Benefiting from these advantages, the NC/MX-TiN exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 45.6 mg g-1 and a steady cycling performance in oxygenated saline water over 50 cycles. This work explores the rational design and construction of MXene-based 2D heterostructure and broadens new horizons for the development of novel CDI electrode materials.

Copper hexacyanoferrate/carbon sheet combination with high selectivity and capacity for copper removal by pseudocapacitance

The efficient capture of copper ions (Cu2+) in wastewater has dual significance in pollution control and resource recovery. Prussian blue analog (PBA)-based pseudocapacitive materials with open frameworks and abundant metal sites have attracted considerable attention as capacitive deionization (CDI) electrodes for copper removal. In this study, the efficiency of copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) as CDI electrode for Cu2+ treating was evaluated for the first time upon the successful synthesis of copper hexacyanoferrate/carbon sheet combination (CuHCF/C) by introducing carbon sheet as conductive substrate. CuHCF/C exhibited significant pseudocapacitance and high specific capacitance (52.92 F g-1) through the intercalation, deintercalation, and coupling of Cu+/Cu2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ redox pairs. At 0.8 an applied voltage and CuSO4 feed liquid concentration of 100 mg L-1, the salt adsorption capacity was 134.47 mg g-1 higher than those of most reported electrodes. Moreover, CuHCF/C demonstrated excellent Cu2+ selectivity in multi-ion coexisting solutions and in actual wastewater experiments. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to elucidate the mechanism. This study not only reveals the essence of Cu2+ deionization by PBAs pseudocapacitance with promising potential applications but also provides a new strategy for selecting efficient CDI electrodes for Cu2+ removal.

Enhanced Selective Electrosorption of Nitrate from Wastewater by Controllably Doping Nitrogen into Porous Carbon with Micropores

The biological NO3- removal process might be accompanied by high CO2 emissions and operation costs. Capacitive deionization (CDI) has been widely studied as a very efficient method to purify water. Here, a porous carbon material with a tunable nitrogen configuration was developed. Characterization and density functional theory calculation show that nitrogenous functional groups have a higher NO3- binding energy than Cl-, SO42-, and H2PO4-. In addition, the selectivity of NO3- is improved after the introduction of micropores by using the pore template. The NO3- ion removal and selectivity of MN-C-12 are 4.57 and 3.46-5.42 times that of activated carbon (AC), respectively. The high NO3- selectivity and electrosorption properties of MN-C-12 (the highest N content and micropore area) are due to the synergistic effect of the affinity of nitrogen functional groups to NO3- and microporous ion screening. A CDI unit for the removal of nitrogen from municipal wastewater was constructed and applied to treat wastewater meeting higher discharge standards of A (N: 15 mg L-1) and B (N: 20 mg L-1) ((GB18918-2002), China). This work provides new insights into enhanced carbon materials for the selective electrosorption of wastewater by CDI technology.

Three-dimensional titanium mesh-based flow electrode capacitive deionization for salt separation and enrichment in high salinity water

Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is a highly promising desalination technique known for its exceptional electrosorption capacity, making it suitable for efficient salt separation in high salinity water. However, the unsatisfactory charge transfer process between the flow electrode and current collector severely curtails the salt separation and enrichment performance of the FCDI device. To address this issue, three-dimensional titanium mesh (3D-TM) was proposed as a novel current collector for FCDI device, which significantly amplifies the charge transfer area and exhibits excellent salt separation performance. The 3D-TM current collector promotes the electron transfer, charge percolation, and ion migration processes through the electroconvection generated by the turbulence effect on the flow electrode. In the specific case of the 20-mesh 3D-TM, which is composed of 12 stacking layers of titanium mesh, the remarkable average salt removal rate and charge efficiency were achieved 5.06 μmol cm-2 min-1 and 92.9 % under an appropriate applied voltage of 2.0 V, respectively. Dramatically, the desalination performance maintained above 76.4 % over 100 desalination cycles at 2.0 V, demonstrating the exceptional cyclic stability of the 3D-TM FCDI cell. In the seawater desalination, the 3D-TM FCDI cell exhibited an impressive salt removal efficiency of 97.5 % (from 34.2 g L-1 to 0.84 g L-1) for 1 L East China seawater at 2.0 V for 24 h. For lithium-ion enrichment, the FCDI continuous desalting system achieved an astonishing concentration of 17.3 g L-1 for Li+ ions enrichment from an initial concentration of 1.30 g L-1, obtaining the average salt treating rate of 23.6 g m-2h-1 and charge efficiency of 80.0 %. Moreover, the lithium-sodium ions and lithium-magnesium ions enrichments were both conducted, yielding an enriched concentration of 10.4 g L-1 and 7.30 g L-1 for Li+ ions, respectively. These findings highlight the enormous potential of FCDI technology in industrial engineering applications, further establishing it as a highly viable solution.

Functional MXenes: Progress and Perspectives on Synthetic Strategies and Structure-Property Interplay for Next-Generation Technologies

MXenes are a class of 2D materials that include layered transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. Since their inception in 2011, they have garnered significant attention due to their diverse compositions, unique structures, and extraordinary properties, such as high specific surface areas and excellent electrical conductivity. This versatility has opened up immense potential in various fields, catalyzing a surge in MXene research and leading to note worthy advancements. This review offers an in-depth overview of the evolution of MXenes over the past 5 years, with an emphasis on synthetic strategies, structure-property relationships, and technological prospects. A classification scheme for MXene structures based on entropy is presented and an updated summary of the elemental constituents of the MXene family is provided, as documented in recent literature. Delving into the microscopic structure and synthesis routes, the intricate structure-property relationships are explored at the nano/micro level that dictate the macroscopic applications of MXenes. Through an extensive review of the latest representative works, the utilization of MXenes in energy, environmental, electronic, and biomedical fields is showcased, offering a glimpse into the current technological bottlenecks, such asstability, scalability, and device integration. Moreover, potential pathways for advancing MXenes toward next-generation technologies are highlighted.

Freestanding defective ammonium Vanadate@MXene hybrid films cathode for high performance aqueous zinc ion batteries

Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have gained extensive attention due to the numerous advantages of zinc, such as low redox potential, high abundance, low cost as well as high theoretical specific capacity. However, the development of AZIBs is still hampered due to the lack of suitable cathodes. In this work, the freestanding defective ammonium vanadate@MXene (d-NVO@MXene) hybrid film was synthesized by simple vacuum filtration strategy. Due to the presence of the hierarchical freestanding structure, outstanding MXene conductive networks and abundant oxygen vacancy (in the d-NVO nanoribbons), the d-NVO@MXene hybrid film can not only expose more active sites but also possess outstanding conductivity and kinetics of charge transfer/ion diffusion. When the d-NVO@MXene hybrid film was directly used as the cathode, it displayed a high specific capacity of 498 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g and superior cycling stability performance with near 100 % coulomb efficiency. Furthermore, the corresponding storage mechanism was elucidated by ex situ various characterizations. This work provides new ideas for the development of freestanding vanadium-based cathode materials for AZIBs.

Interfacial assembled porous bismuthene/Ti3C2Tx MXene heterostructure for highly efficient capacitive deionization

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is perceived as a promising technology for freshwater production owing to its environmentally friendly nature and low energy consumption. To date, the development of high-performance electrode materials represents the foremost challenge for CDI technology. In this work, the porous bismuthene/MXene (P-Bi-ene/MXene) heterostructure was synthesized using a simple interfacial self-assembly method with two-dimensional (2D) bismuthene and Ti3C2Tx MXene. Within the P-Bi-ene/MXene heterostructure, the porous structure can increase the active site and facilitate ion transport. Simultaneously, MXene effectively enhances the conductivity of the heterostructure, resulting in accelerating electron transport. Due to these attributes, the P-Bi-ene/MXene heterostructure demonstrates high desalination capacity (90.0 mg/g), fast desalination rate, and good cycling performance. The simple self-assembly strategy between 2D/2D materials described herein may offer inspirations for the synthesis of innovative electrode materials with high performance.

Capacitive deionization system with ultra-high salt adsorption performance: from lab design to agricultural applications

Capacitive deionization is an emerging water desalination technology for industrial applications. Recent advancements in electrode design and system development have led to the reporting of ultra-high salt adsorption performance, benefiting its potential application in agricultural water treatment at a potentially low cost. In this study, we provide a comprehensive summary of the porous electrode design strategy to achieve ultra-high ion adsorption performance, considering factors such as experimental parameters, chemically tuned material properties, redox chemistry and smart nanoarchitecture for future electrode design. Furthermore, we endeavor to establish a correlation between capacitive deionization (CDI) technology and its applicability in the agricultural sector, specifically concentrating on water treatment with an emphasis on undesirable ions associated with salinity, hardness, and heavy metals, to achieve harmless irrigation. Additionally, to ensure the efficient and cost-effective application of CDI systems in agriculture, a thorough overview of the literature on CDI cost analysis is presented. By addressing these aspects, we anticipate that ultra-high salt adsorption CDI systems hold great promise in future agricultural applications.

Porous carbon nanosheets derived from two-dimensional Fe-MOF for simultaneous voltammetric sensing of dopamine and uric acid

It is of great significance for electrochemical sensors to simultaneously detect dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) related to biological metabolism. In this work, two-dimensional (2D) porous carbon nanosheets (CNS) was prepared as electrocatalysts to improve the sensitivity, the selectivity, and the detection limit of the simultaneous detection. First, 2D amorphous iron-metal organic frameworks (Fe-MOF) was synthesized with Fe3+and terephthalic acid via a facile wet chemistry method at room temperature. And then, CNS was prepared by pyrolysis and pickling of Fe-MOF. CNS had large specific surface area, good electrical conductivity and lots of carbon defects. The response currents of the CNS modified electrode was larger than those of the control electrodes in the simultaneous determination. The simultaneous determination was measured via differential pulse voltammetry to reduce the effect of capacitive currents on quantitative analysis. The CNS modified electrodes showed high sensitivity and low detection limit for the simultaneous detection of DA and UA. The modified electrodes have been successfully used to detect DA and UA in normal human serum.

Unraveling the Ion Uptake Capacitive Deionization of Sea- and Highly Saline-Water by Sulfur and Nitrogen Co-Doped Porous Carbon Modified with Molybdenum Sulfide

In parallel to the depletion of potable water reservoirs, novel technologies have been developed for seawater softening, as it is the most abundant source for generating deionized water. Although salt removal at subosmotic pressures and ambient temperatures by applying low-operating potentials with high energy efficiency made capacitive deionization (CDI) an advantageous water-softening process, its practical application is limited by insufficient ion removal capacity and low concentration influent. The performance of a CDI system is in progress with engineering the electrode active materials, also facilitating the advance design in highly saline- and seawater study. Herein, an innovative strategy was developed to provide high-performance CDI systems based on efficient and electrochemical ion-uptake active materials with a simple initial preparation. Nitrogen-doped porous carbons (N-pCs) received benefits from a high specific surface area and good surface wettability. The N-pCs were modified with molybdenum oxide/sulfide intercalative array and developed as CDI electrode active materials for desalination of both low/medium saline- and seawater. The MoS2/S,N-pC electrode materials exhibited perfect optimized salt adsorption capacity (SACs) of 47.9 mg g-1 when compared to N-pC (37.9 mg g-1) and MoO3/N-pC (39.6 mg g-1) counterparts at 1.4 V in a 750 ppm NaCl solution. In addition, the assembled CDI cells exhibited reasonable cycle stability and retained 96.7% of their initial SAC in continuous CDI cycles for 128,000 s. The fabricated CDI cell rendered an excellent salt removal efficiency (SRE, %) of 13.34% from the real seawater sample at 1.2 V. In detail, the SRE % of the NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2 soluble salts with respect to seawater sample exhibited a remarkable SRE % of 30.8%, 36%, 32.6%, and 19.3%, respectively. These SRE % values (>13.34%) provide convincing evidence on the reasonable ion uptake capability of the fabricated CDI cells for removing Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ ions compared to other soluble component. The advanced cell design parallel to the promising outcomes provided herein makes these CDI systems immensely propitious for efficient water softening.

MoO2 Nanoclusters Embedded in Hierarchical Nitrogen Doped Carbon Nanoflower as Electrocatalytic Mediators in Aqueous Zinc-Tellurium Batteries: Enhancing Electrochemical Kinetics of Tellurium Redox Reaction

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered to be one of the most promising devices for large-scale energy storage systems owing to their high theoretical capacity, environmental friendliness, and safety. However, the ionic intercalation or surface redox mechanisms in conventional cathode materials generally result in unsatisfactory capacities. Conversion-type aqueous zinc-tellurium (Zn-Te) batteries have recently gained widespread attention owing to their high theoretical specific capacities. However, it remains an enormous challenge to improve the slow kinetics of the aqueous Zn-Te batteries. Here, MoO2 nanoclusters embedded in hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanoflower (MoO2 /NC) hosts are successfully synthesized and loaded with Te in aqueous Zn-Te batteries. Benefitting from the highly dispersed MoO2 nanoclusters and hierarchical nanoflower structure with a large specific surface area, the electrochemical kinetics of the Te redox reaction are significantly improved. As a result, the Te-MoO2 /NC electrode exhibits superior cycling stability and a high specific capacity of 493 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 . Meanwhile, the conversion mechanism is systematically explored using a variety of ex situ characterization methods. Therefore, this study provides a novel approach for enhancing the kinetics of the Te redox reaction in aqueous Zn-Te batteries.

Bismuth Nano-Nest/Ti3CN Quantum Dot-Based Surface Plasmon Coupling Electrochemiluminescence Sensor for Ascites miRNA-421 Detection

In this study, a novel surface plasmon-coupled electrochemiluminescence (SPC-ECL) biosensor was developed based on bismuth nano-nest and Ti₃CN quantum dots (Ti₃CN QDs). First, MXene derivative QDs (Ti₃CN QDs) with excellent luminescence performance were prepared as the ECL luminescent. The N doping in Ti₃CN QDs can effectively improve the luminescence performance and catalytic activity. Therefore, the luminescence performance of QDs has been effectively improved. Furthermore, the bismuth nano-nest structure with a strong localized surface plasmon resonance effect has been designed as the sensing interface via the electrochemical deposition method. It was worth noticed that the morphology of bismuth nanomaterials can be controlled effectively on the electrode surface by the step potential method. Due to the abundant surface plasmon hot spots generated between the bismuth nano-nests, the isotropic ECL signal of Ti₃CN QDs can be not only significantly enhanced by 5.8 times but also converted into polarized emission. Finally, the bismuth nano-nest/Ti₃CN QD-based SPC-ECL sensor was used to quantify miRNA-421 in the range of 1 fM to 10 nM. The biosensor has been successfully used for miRNA in ascites samples from gastric cancer patients, which indicated that the SPC-ECL sensor developed in this study has great potential for clinical analysis.

Strong interface coupling boosting hierarchical bismuth embedded carbon hybrid for high-performance capacitive deionization

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is regarded as a promising desalination technology owing to its low cost and environmental friendliness. However, the lack of high-performance electrode materials remains a challenge in CDI. Herein, the hierarchical bismuth-embedded carbon (Bi@C) hybrid with strong interface coupling was prepared through facile solvothermal and annealing strategy. The hierarchical structure with strong interface coupling between the bismuth and carbon matrix afforded abundant active sites for chloridion (Cl^-) capture, improved electrons/ions transfer and the stability of the Bi@C hybrid. As a result of these advantages, the Bi@C hybrid showed a high salt adsorption capacity (75.3 mg/g under 1.2 V), salt adsorption rate and good stability, making it a promising electrode material for CDI. Furthermore, the desalination mechanism of the Bi@C hybrid was elucidated through various characterizations. Therefore, this work provides valuable insights for the design of high-performance bismuth-based electrode materials for CDI.

Hierarchical amorphous vanadium oxide and carbon nanotubes microspheres with strong interface interaction for Superior performance aqueous Zinc-ion batteries

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted more and more attention due to their safety, environmental benignity and high theoretical capacity. However, the lack of appropriate cathode materials with high capacity and long cycle life have become an obstacle to the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Herein, the hierarchical amorphous vanadium oxide and carbon nanotubes (a-V₂O₅@CNTs) microspheres with strong interface interaction were successfully prepared by combing facile spray drying technique with annealing treatment. Benefiting from the a-V₂O₅ amorphous characters, CNTs framework high conductivity and hierarchical microspheres with strong interface interaction, the a-V₂O₅@CNTs exhibited abundant active sites, fast reaction kinetics as well as eminent structure stability. As a promising electrode material, the a-V₂O₅@CNTs displayed high specific capacity (480 mAh g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1), good rate capability and long-term stability under high current density (158 mAh g^-1 at 30 A g^-1 over 1000 cycles). Meanwhile, the corresponding mechanism was further illustrated through different characterizations. Furthermore, the as-assembled flexible pouch battery based on the a-V₂O₅@CNTs delivered outstanding flexibility and feasibility. Hence, this work provides a new idea for developing high performance cathode materials of aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Facile and effective defect engineering strategy boosting ammonium vanadate nanoribbon for high performance aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Vanadium-based oxides have gained widespread attention as promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to their abundant valences, high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, the intrinsic sluggish kinetics and unsatisfactory conductivity have severely hampered their further development. Herein, a facile and effective defect engineering strategy was developed at room temperature to prepare the defective (NH₄)₂V₁₀O₂₅·8H₂O (d-NHVO) nanoribbon with plenty of oxygen vacancies. Owing to the introduction of oxygen vacancies, the d-NHVO nanoribbon possessed more active sites, excellent electronic conductivity and fast ion diffusion kinetics. Benefiting from these advantages, the d-NHVO nanoribbon as an aqueous zinc-ion battery cathode material exhibited superior specific capacity (512 mAh g^-1 at 0.3 A g^-1), excellent rate capability and long-term cycle performance. Simultaneously, the storage mechanism of the d-NHVO nanoribbon was clarified via comprehensive characterizations. Furthermore, the pouch battery based on the d-NHVO nanoribbon was fabricated and presented eminent flexibility and feasibility. This work provides a novel thought for simple and efficient development of high- performance vanadium-based oxides cathode materials for AZIBs.
