Exploiting Evanescent Field Polarization for Giant Chiroptical Modulation from Achiral Gold Half-Rings

Multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials: recent advances in synthesis and applications

Chiral hybrid nanomaterials with multiple components provide a highly promising approach for the integration of desired chirality with other functionalities into one single nanoscale entity. However, precise control over multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials to enable their application in diverse and complex scenarios remains a significant challenge. In this review, our focus lies on the recent advances in the preparation and application of multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials, with an emphasis on synthetic strategies and emerging applications. We first systematically elucidate preparation methods for multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials encompassing the following approaches: physical deposition approach, galvanic replacement reaction, chiral molecule-mediated, chiral heterostructure, circularly polarized light-mediated, magnetically induced, and chiral assembly. Furthermore, we highlight emerging applications of multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials in chirality sensing, enantioselective catalysis, and biomedicine. Finally, we provide an outlook on the challenges and opportunities in the field of multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials. In-depth investigations of these multicomponent chiral hybrid nanomaterials will pave the way for the rational design of chiral hybrid nanostructures with desirable functionalities for emerging technological applications.

Geometric Control and Optical Properties of Intrinsically Chiral Plasmonic Nanomaterials

Intrinsically chiral plasmonic nanomaterials exhibit intriguing geometry-dependent chiroptical properties, which is due to the combination of plasmonic features with geometric chirality. Thus, chiral plasmonic nanomaterials have become promising candidates for applications in biosensing, asymmetric catalysis, biomedicine, photonics, etc. Recent advances in geometric control and optical tuning of intrinsically chiral plasmonic nanomaterials have further opened up a unique opportunity for their widespread applications in many emerging technological areas. Here, the recent developments in the geometric control of chiral plasmonic nanomaterials are reviewed with special attention given to the quantitative understanding of the chiroptical structure-property relationship. Several important optical spectroscopic tools for characterizing the optical chirality of plasmonic nanomaterials at both ensemble and single-particle levels are also discussed. Three emerging applications of chiral plasmonic nanomaterials, including enantioselective sensing, enantioselective catalysis, and biomedicine, are further highlighted. It is envisioned that these advanced studies in chiral plasmonic nanomaterials will pave the way toward the rational design of chiral nanomaterials with desired optical properties for diverse emerging technological applications.

Chiral Plasmonic Pinwheels Exhibit Orientation-Independent Linear Differential Scattering under Asymmetric Illumination

Plasmonic nanoantennas have considerably stronger polarization-dependent optical properties than their molecular counterparts, inspiring photonic platforms for enhancing molecular dichroism and providing fundamental insight into light-matter interactions. One such insight is that even achiral nanoparticles can yield strong optical activity when they are asymmetrically illuminated from a single oblique angle instead of evenly illuminated. This effect, called extrinsic chirality, results from the overall chirality of the experimental geometry and strongly depends on the orientation of the incident light. Although extrinsic chirality has been well-characterized, an analogous effect involving linear polarization sensitivity has not yet been discussed. In this study, we investigate the differential scattering of rotationally symmetric chiral plasmonic pinwheels when asymmetrically irradiated with linearly polarized light. Despite their high rotational symmetry, we observe substantial linear differential scattering that is maintained over all pinwheel orientations. We demonstrate that this orientation-independent linear differential scattering arises from the broken mirror and rotational symmetries of our overall experimental geometry. Our results underscore the necessity of considering both the rotational symmetry of the nanoantenna and the experimental setup, including illumination direction and angle, when performing plasmon-enhanced chiroptical characterizations. Our results demonstrate spectroscopic signatures of an effect analogous to extrinsic chirality for linear polarizations.

Assembly of planar chiral superlattices from achiral building blocks

The spontaneous assembly of chiral structures from building blocks that lack chirality is fundamentally important for colloidal chemistry and has implications for the formation of advanced optical materials. Here, we find that purified achiral gold tetrahedron-shaped nanoparticles assemble into two-dimensional superlattices that exhibit planar chirality under a balance of repulsive electrostatic and attractive van der Waals and depletion forces. A model accounting for these interactions shows that the growth of planar structures is kinetically preferred over similar three-dimensional products, explaining their selective formation. Exploration and mapping of different packing symmetries demonstrates that the hexagonal chiral phase forms exclusively because of geometric constraints imposed by the presence of constituent tetrahedra with sharp tips. A formation mechanism is proposed in which the chiral phase nucleates from within a related 2D achiral phase by clockwise or counterclockwise rotation of tetrahedra about their central axis. These results lay the scientific foundation for the high-throughput assembly of planar chiral metamaterials.

The formation of nanostructures with chiral symmetry often requires chiral directing agents at a smaller length scale. Here, the authors report the self-assembly of 2D chiral superlattices from achiral tetrahedron-shaped building blocks.

High-directionality spin-selective routing of photons in plasmonic nanocircuits

Efficient on-chip manipulation of photon spin is of crucial importance in developing future integrated nanophotonics as is electron spin in spintronics. The unidirectionality induced by the interaction between spin and orbital angular momenta suffers low efficiency in classical macroscopic optics, while it can be highly enhanced on subwavelength scales with suitable architectures. Here we propose and demonstrate a spin-sorting achiral split-ring coupler to unidirectionally excite dielectric-loaded plasmonic modes in two independent waveguides. We found experimentally that the impinging light with different spin can be selectively directed into one of two branching plasmonic waveguides with a directionality contrast up to 15.1 dB. A circular-helicity-independent compact beam splitter is also realized demonstrating great potential in designing complex interconnect nanocircuits. The illustrated approach is believed to open new avenues for developing advanced optical functionalities with a flexible degree of freedom in manipulation of on-chip chirality within chiral optics.

Spin-orbit-enabled sorting of optical flows in plasmonic nanocircuits

On-chip controlling of photon spin is essential in developing future integrated nanophotonics with complex functionalities. Here we propose and demonstrate a robust spin-sorting nanocircuit, which consists of a spin-orbit coupler (i.e., combined nanoring and nanodisk) and an L-shaped dielectric-loaded surface plasmon (DLSPs) waveguide. The nanocircuit with optimized geometric parameters is shown to be capable of unidirectionally exciting and routing a DLSP mode along an independent waveguide. We found experimentally that the proposed device possesses an average insertion loss (extinction ratio) of 0.13 dB (14.8 dB) under complete circularly polarized incidence with opposite spin, which is in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The proposed spin-selective scheme may pave the way for applications in the manipulation of chirality with a flexible degree of freedom.

Self-Assembly of Plasmonic Nanoantenna-Waveguide Structures for Subdiffractional Chiral Sensing

Spin-momentum locking is a peculiar effect in the near-field of guided optical or plasmonic modes. It can be utilized to map the spinning or handedness of electromagnetic fields onto the propagation direction. This motivates a method to probe the circular dichroism of an illuminated chiral object. In this work, we demonstrate local, subdiffraction limited chiral coupling of light and propagating surface plasmon polaritons in a self-assembled system of a gold nanoantenna and a silver nanowire. A thin silica shell around the nanowire provides precise distance control and also serves as a host for fluorescent molecules, which indicate the direction of plasmon propagation. We characterize our nanoantenna-nanowire systems comprehensively through correlated electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, dark-field, and fluorescence imaging. Three-dimensional numerical simulations support the experimental findings. Besides our measurement of far-field polarization, we estimate sensing capabilities and derive not only a sensitivity of 1 mdeg for the ellipticity of the light field, but also find 10³ deg cm²/dmol for the circular dichroism of an analyte locally introduced in the hot spot of the antenna-wire system. Thorough modeling of a prototypical design predicts on-chip sensing of chiral analytes. This introduces our system as an ultracompact sensor for chiral response far below the diffraction limit.

Synthesis and Surface Plasmonic Characterization of Asymmetric Au Split Nanorings

In this Letter, a rational and stepwise method for the solution-phase synthesis of asymmetric Au split nanorings by adopting Au nanoprisms as a template has been demonstrated. The selective chemical etching of Au nanoprism tips activated the surface reactivity of edges and led to the selective deposition of Pt at the periphery of Au nanoplates. By controlling the total amount of Pt on the edges, different degrees of split Au@Pt nanorings were obtained; the subsequent Au coating around the Au@Pt scaffold eventually resulted in asymmetric Au hexagonal split nanorings. Their surface plasmonic features as a function of split degrees were investigated, including straight nanorods, bent nanorods, split nanorings, and full nanorings. The electrical field focusing using single-particle surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy was evaluated under different polarization angles of the incident light for two different structures with the point gap and line gap between two arms.

Polarized evanescent waves reveal trochoidal dichroism

The ability of certain materials to discriminate between two opposite light polarizations is the basic principle behind several technologies such as liquid crystal displays and three-dimensional glasses. While there are numerous forms of light polarization, only linear and circular polarizations, which have wave motion in a flat sheet or helix, respectively, are typically used. Here, we utilize trochoidal polarizations with cartwheeling wave motion. We demonstrate that single gold nanorod dimers can discriminate between trochoidal fields rotating in opposite directions, which we term trochoidal dichroism. Trochoidal dichroism forms an additional classification of polarized light–matter interaction and could inspire the development of optical studies uniquely sensitive to molecules with cartwheeling charge motion, potentially relevant for probing key light-harvesting antennas.

Matter’s sensitivity to light polarization is characterized by linear and circular polarization effects, corresponding to the system’s anisotropy and handedness, respectively. Recent investigations into the near-field properties of evanescent waves have revealed polarization states with out-of-phase transverse and longitudinal oscillations, resulting in trochoidal, or cartwheeling, field motion. Here, we demonstrate matter’s inherent sensitivity to the direction of the trochoidal field and name this property trochoidal dichroism. We observe trochoidal dichroism in the differential excitation of bonding and antibonding plasmon modes for a system composed of two coupled dipole scatterers. Trochoidal dichroism constitutes the observation of a geometric basis for polarization sensitivity that fundamentally differs from linear and circular dichroism. It could also be used to characterize molecular systems, such as certain light-harvesting antennas, with cartwheeling charge motion upon excitation.

Experimental and Theoretical Observation of Photothermal Chirality in Gold Nanoparticle Helicoids

Single-particle spectroscopy is central to the characterization of plasmonic nanostructures and understanding of light-matter interactions in chiral nanosystems. Although chiral plasmonic nanostructures are generally characterized by their circular differential extinction and scattering, single-particle absorption studies can extend our understanding of light-matter interactions. Here, we introduce an experimental observation of photothermal chirality which originated from circular differential absorption of chiral plasmonic nanostructures. Using luminescence ratio thermometry, we identify the optical and photothermal handedness and an absolute temperature difference of 6 K under the right and left circularly polarized light. We observe a circular differential extinction parameter (g_ext) of -0.13 in colloidally prepared gold helicoids and compare our findings with numerical simulations using finite element methods. The simulated data showed that circular differential absorption and the maximum temperature of a small cluster of helical nanoparticles are polarization-dependent. We observed an intensity-dependent photothermal g-factor from chiral helicoids that decreases slightly at higher temperatures. We also measure a range of optical g-factors from several gold helicoids, which are attributed to the heterogeneity of helicoids in nanoparticles during synthesis. The principles of differential photothermal response of chiral nanomaterials and heat generation described here can be potentially used for thermal photocatalysis, energy conversion, and electronic applications.

Chiral Scatterometry on Chemically Synthesized Single Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Wide-spread applications of nanoparticles require large-scale fabrication techniques. Being intrinsically scalable, bottom-up nanoparticle synthesis shows an ever-growing control over particle morphology, enabling even chirally selective shapes. Significant efforts have been undertaken to refine the synthesis in order to decrease the structural spread of the particles and to purify and maximize the resulting handedness. So far, imaging technologies such as electron microscopy are mostly used to investigate the quality of the synthesis. However, for nanophotonic and plasmonic applications, the optical properties are, in fact, key. In this work, we show that single particle chiral scatterometry holds great potential as a feedback to characterize the (chir-)optical quality of chemically synthesized nanoparticles. The spectra of single helicoid nanoparticles reveal a diverse set of chiroptical responses with hugely varying absolute chiral asymmetry in spite of the well-controlled morphology of the particles. Averaging over the single nanoparticles reproduces the solution ensemble measurement remarkably well. This demonstrates that the single particles, despite their morphological and consequently chiroptical differences, exhibit a clearly pronounced chiral spectral and structural feature. We find that the g-factor, that is, the degree of asymmetry of chiral light scattering of single nanoparticles can be up to 4 times larger than that for the ensemble. This proves that chiral scatterometry can be a highly important optical feedback for bottom-up nanoparticle synthesis as it reveals that the asymmetry of the ensemble solution can be further increased and maximized by appropriate refinement methods or by postfabrication purification.

On-Chip Detection of Optical Spin-Orbit Interactions in Plasmonic Nanocircuits

On-chip manipulating and controlling the temporal and spatial evolution of light are of crucial importance for information processing in future planar integrated nanophotonics. The spin and orbital angular momentum of light, which can be treated independently in classical macroscopic geometrical optics, appear to be coupled on subwavelength scales. We use spin-orbit interactions in a plasmonic achiral nanocoupler to unidirectionally excite surface plasmon polariton modes propagating in seamlessly integrated plasmonic slot waveguides. The spin-dependent flow of light in the proposed nanophotonic circuit allows on-chip electrical detection of the spin state of incident photons by integrating two germanium-based plasmonic-waveguide photodetectors. Consequently, our device serves as a compact (∼6 × 18 μm²) electrical sensor for photonic spin Hall dynamics. The demonstrated configuration opens new avenues for developing highly integrated polarization-controlled optical devices that would exploit the spin-degree of freedom for manipulating and controlling subwavelength optical modes in nanophotonic systems.
