Substrate-Selective Morphology of Cesium Iodide Clusters on Graphene

Atomic insight into the effects of precursor clusters on monolayer WSe2

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been attracting much attention due to their rich physical and chemical properties. At the end of the chemical vapor deposition growth of 2D TMDCs, the adsorption of excess precursor clusters onto the sample is unavoidable, which will have significant effects on the properties of TMDCs. This is a concern to the academic community. However, the structures of the supported precursor clusters and their effects on the properties of the prepared 2D TMDCs are still poorly understood. Herein, taking monolayer WSe2 as the prototype, we investigated the structure and electronic properties of SeN, WN (N = 1-8), and W8-NSeN (N = 1-7) clusters adsorbed on monolayer WSe2 to gain atomic insight into the precursor cluster adsorption. In contrast to W clusters that tightly bind to the WSe2 surface, Se clusters except for Se1 and Se2 are weakly adsorbed onto WSe2. The interaction between W8-NSeN (N = 1-7) clusters and the WSe2 monolayer decreases with the increase in the Se/W ratio and eventually becomes van der Waals interaction for W1Se7. According to the phase diagram, increasing the Se/W ratio by changing the experimental conditions will increase the ratio of SeN and W1Se7 clusters in the precursor, which can be removed by proper annealing after growth. W clusters induce lots of defect energy levels in the band gap region, while the adsorption of W1Se7 and SeN clusters (N = 3-6, 8) promotes the spatial separation of photo generated carriers at the interface, which is important for optoelectronic applications. Our results indicate that by controlling the Se/W ratio, the interaction between the precursor clusters and WSe2 as well as the electronic properties of the prepared WSe2 monolayer can be effectively tuned, which is significant for the high-quality growth and applications of WSe2.

Ultra-Thin 2D Ionic Salt Supported with Strong Hydrogen-Bonding Assisted Ionic Interaction

2D materials have attracted great interest since the report of graphene. However, because of the fragile stability of ultra-thin nanosheets, most studies are restricted to sheets maintained by strong covalent or coordination bonds. The research on which kind of bonds can maintain the free-standing existence of 2D nanosheets is still of great significance. Recently, 2D ionic salts are successfully synthesized on substrates, but whether 2D ionic salts can free-stand is still a problem. Herein this problem is addressed by a free-standing 2D ionic salt (thickness: ≈2 nm) exfoliated from a 4,4'-bipyridinium hydrochloride salt crystal. The stability of this 2D salt is supported by a strong NH···Cl hydrogen (H)-bonding assisted ionic interaction (17.99 kcal mol^-1 ), which is verified by density functional theory calculation and natural bond orbital analysis. The salt crystal has strong air-stable radicals inside and the 2D ionic salt exhibits red fluorescence in solution and in solid-state, especially in solution the stokes shifts are very large (≈ 386 nm). This breakthrough work is not only beneficial for the construction of novel 2D materials but also for the understanding of H-bonding interactions.

Hybrid Graphene-Supported Aluminum Plasmonics

Controlled fabrication of devices for plasmonics on suspended graphene enables obtaining tunable localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), reducing the red-shift of LSPRs, and creating hybrid 3D-2D systems promising for adjustable dipole-dipole coupling and plasmon-mediated catalysis. Here, we apply a low-cost fabrication methodology to produce patterned aluminum nanostructures (bowties and tetramers) on graphene monolayers via electron-beam lithography and trap platinum (Pt) nanoclusters (NCs) within their hotspots by thermal annealing. We reveal the LSPRs of aluminum plasmonics on graphene using electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) in a monochromated scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). The LSPRs of these nanostructures are measured to be between visible and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum and are confirmed by electromagnetic simulations. The antibonding dipole and bonding dipole modes of both structures are tuned by controlling their gap size. The tetramers enable the simultaneous excitation of both antibonding and bonding dipole modes at the poles of nanoprisms, while bowties allow us to excite these modes separately either at the poles or within the hotspot. We further show that the hybrid nanocavity-NC systems are in the intermediate coupling regime providing an enhanced plasmon absorption in the Pt NCs via the energy transfer from the antibonding dipole mode to the Pt NCs. The dipole LSPR of Pt NCs also couples to the bonding-type breathing mode in bowties. Our findings suggest that these hybrid nanocavity-graphene systems are of high application potential for plasmon-mediated catalysis, surface-enhanced fluorescence, and quantum technologies.

Mass-selective and ice-free electron cryomicroscopy protein sample preparation via native electrospray ion-beam deposition

Despite tremendous advances in sample preparation and classification algorithms for electron cryomicroscopy (cryo-EM) and single-particle analysis (SPA), sample heterogeneity remains a major challenge and can prevent access to high-resolution structures. In addition, optimization of preparation conditions for a given sample can be time-consuming. In the current work, it is demonstrated that native electrospray ion-beam deposition (native ES-IBD) is an alternative, reliable approach for the preparation of extremely high-purity samples, based on mass selection in vacuum. Folded protein ions are generated by native electrospray ionization, separated from other proteins, contaminants, aggregates, and fragments, gently deposited on cryo-EM grids, frozen in liquid nitrogen, and subsequently imaged by cryo-EM. We demonstrate homogeneous coverage of ice-free cryo-EM grids with mass-selected protein complexes. SPA reveals that the complexes remain folded and assembled, but variations in secondary and tertiary structures are currently limiting information in 2D classes and 3D EM density maps. We identify and discuss challenges that need to be addressed to obtain a resolution comparable to that of the established cryo-EM workflow. Our results show the potential of native ES-IBD to increase the scope and throughput of cryo-EM for protein structure determination and provide an essential link between gas-phase and solution-phase protein structures.

Improvement of Cs detection performance and formation of CsCl and Cs nanoparticles by tuning graphene oxide quantum dot-based nanocomposite

A new nanocomposite was developed using functionalized graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) with cesium green molecules for the first time. Although the cesium green molecule works effectively only in the solid-state, without water, and in basic conditions, the functionalized GOQDs with cesium green made the nanocomposite work well as a cesium (Cs) detector in mixed solution (distilled water/THF). The nanocomposite can be employed as a Cs detector in both acidic and basic conditions. The present study revealed that the nanocomposite of GOQDs with cesium green showed an enhanced photoluminescence in basic conditions, while the intensity of the photoluminescence in acidic conditions is the superposition of the photoluminescence of the corresponding components. The photoluminescence of the nanocomposite was quenched (turned OFF) after Cs treatment in basic conditions. On the other hand, in the acidic conditions it was found that the photoluminescence intensity of this nanocomposite was enhanced (turned ON) by the Cs addition in two different Cs concentrations, 0.06 mmol L^-1 and 0.12 mmol L^-1. In addition, the movement of the nanocomposite (after Cs addition) under the electron beams through TEM measurement was observed. The formation of CsCl and Cs nanoparticles was identified. Specifically, the Cs cluster occurrence is discussed by taking into account the mobility effect of the adatoms on the composite layer under electron beam irradiation.

Navigate Flying Molecular Elephants Safely to the Ground: Mass-Selective Soft Landing up to the Mega-Dalton Range by Electrospray Controlled Ion-Beam Deposition

The prototype of a highly versatile and efficient preparative mass spectrometry system used for the deposition of molecules in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) is presented, along with encouraging performance data obtained using four model species that are thermolabile or not sublimable. The test panel comprises two small organic compounds, a small and very large protein, and a large DNA species covering a 4-log mass range up to 1.7 MDa as part of a broad spectrum of analyte species evaluated to date. Three designs of innovative ion guides, a novel digital mass-selective quadrupole (dQMF), and a standard electrospray ionization (ESI) source are combined to an integrated device, abbreviated electrospray controlled ion-beam deposition (ES-CIBD). Full control is achieved by (i) the square-wave-driven radiofrequency (RF) ion guides with steadily tunable frequencies, including a dQMF allowing for investigation, purification, and deposition of a virtually unlimited m/z range, (ii) the adjustable landing energy of ions down to ∼2 eV/z enabling integrity-preserving soft landing, (iii) the deposition in UHV with high ion beam intensity (up to 3 nA) limiting contaminations and deposition time, and (iv) direct coverage control via the deposited charge. The maximum resolution of R = 650 and overall efficiency up to T_total = 4.4% calculated from the solution to UHV deposition are advantageous, whereby the latter can be further enhanced by optimizing ionization performance. In the setup presented, a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is attached for in situ UHV investigations of deposited species, demonstrating a selective, structure-preserving process and atomically clean layers.

Depositing Molecular Graphene Nanoribbons on Ag(111) by Electrospray Controlled Ion Beam Deposition: Self-Assembly and On-Surface Transformations

The chemical processing of low‐dimensional carbon nanostructures is crucial for their integration in future devices. Here we apply a new methodology in atomically precise engineering by combining multistep solution synthesis of N‐doped molecular graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with mass‐selected ultra‐high vacuum electrospray controlled ion beam deposition on surfaces and real‐space visualisation by scanning tunnelling microscopy. We demonstrate how this method yields solely a controllable amount of single, otherwise unsublimable, GNRs of 2.9 nm length on a planar Ag(111) surface. This methodology allows for further processing by employing on‐surface synthesis protocols and exploiting the reactivity of the substrate. Following multiple chemical transformations, the GNRs provide reactive building blocks to form extended, metal–organic coordination polymers.

Catalyzing Bond-Dissociation in Graphene via Alkali-Iodide Molecules

Atomic design of a 2D-material such as graphene can be substantially influenced by etching, deliberately induced in a transmission electron microscope. It is achieved primarily by overcoming the threshold energy for defect formation by controlling the kinetic energy and current density of the fast electrons. Recent studies have demonstrated that the presence of certain species of atoms can catalyze atomic bond dissociation processes under the electron beam by reducing their threshold energy. Most of the reported catalytic atom species are single atoms, which have strong interaction with single-layer graphene (SLG). Yet, no such behavior has been reported for molecular species. This work shows by experimentally comparing the interaction of alkali and halide species separately and conjointly with SLG, that in the presence of electron irradiation, etching of SLG is drastically enhanced by the simultaneous presence of alkali and iodine atoms. Density functional theory and first principles molecular dynamics calculations reveal that due to charge-transfer phenomena the CC bonds weaken close to the alkali-iodide species, which increases the carbon displacement cross-section. This study ascribes pronounced etching activity observed in SLG to the catalytic behavior of the alkali-iodide species in the presence of electron irradiation.

Single Indium Atoms and Few-Atom Indium Clusters Anchored onto Graphene via Silicon Heteroatoms

Single atoms and few-atom nanoclusters are of high interest in catalysis and plasmonics, but pathways for their fabrication and placement remain scarce. We report here the self-assembly of room-temperature-stable single indium (In) atoms and few-atom In clusters (2-6 atoms) that are anchored to substitutional silicon (Si) impurity atoms in suspended monolayer graphene membranes. Using atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), we find that the symmetry of the In structures is critically determined by the three- or fourfold coordination of the Si "anchors". All structures are produced without electron-beam induced materials modification. In turn, when activated by electron beam irradiation in the STEM, we observe in situ the formation, restructuring, and translation of the Si-anchored In structures. Our results on In-Si-graphene provide a materials system for controlled self-assembly and heteroatomic anchoring of single atoms and few-atom nanoclusters on graphene.

Material and Charge Transport of Large Organic Salt Clusters and Nanoparticles in Electrospray Ion Beam Deposition

Electrospray ion beam deposition (ES-IBD) or ion soft landing has been demonstrated as a technique suitable for processing nonvolatile molecules in vacuum under perfectly controlled conditions, an approach also desirable for the deposition of nanoparticles. Here, we present results from several approaches to generate, characterize, and deposit nanoparticle ion beams in vacuum for deposition. We focus on cluster ion beams generated by ESI of organic salt solutions. Small cluster ions of the salts appear in the mass spectra as defined peaks. In addition, we find nanoparticle-sized aggregates, appearing as a low intensity background at high m/z-ratio, and show by IBD experiments that these clusters carry the major amount of material in the ion beam. This transition from clusters to nanoparticles, and their successful deposition, shows that ES-IBD can in principle handle ion beams of very heavy and highly charged nanoparticles. In related experiments, however, we found the deposition of nanoparticles from dispersions to be of low reproducibility, due to the lack of control by mass spectrometry.

Principles of Operation of a Rotating Wall Mass Analyzer for Preparative Mass Spectrometry

In this contribution, we describe the principles of operation of a rotating wall mass analyzer (RWMA), a mass-dispersive device for preparative mass spectrometry. Ions of different m/z are spatially separated by RWMA and deposited onto ring-shaped areas of distinct radii on a surface. We use a combination of an analytical equation for predicting the radius of the deposition ring and SIMION simulations to understand how to optimize the experimental conditions for the separation of multicomponent mixtures. The results of these simulations are compared with the experimental data. We introduce a universal mass calibration procedure, based on a series of polyacrylamide ions, which is subsequently used to predict the deposition radii of unknown analytes. The calibration is independent of the polarity, kinetic energy, and charge state of the ion as demonstrated by assigning m/z values of different analytes including multiply charged ubiquitin ions. We demonstrate that mass resolution of the RWMA is affected by the width and kinetic energy distribution of the ion beam. The best mass resolution obtained in this study is m/Δm = ∼20. Preparative mass spectrometry using RWMA provides the advantages of simplicity, compactness, and low fabrication cost, which are particularly promising for the development of miniaturized instrumentation. The results presented in this work can be readily adapted to preparative separation of a variety of charged species of interest to the broad scientific community.
