Fabrication of Beta-Barium Borate Sensing Head for Non-Invasive Measurement of Fluidic Concentration Variations

In this study, a beta-barium borate sensing head (BBO-SH) was fabricated and evaluated for the measurements of fluidic concentration variations by using a non-invasive technique. The BBO-SH could be coupled to a fluidic container through thin interlayer water in a heterodyne interferometer based on the phase interrogation. To ensure the sensing head's stability, the package of BBO-SH uses the prism and the coverslip bounded with UV glue, which can resist environmental damage due to moisture. After each use, the sensing head could be easily cleaned. The sensitivity of the BBO-SH remained stable after repeated measurements over a period of 139 days. Finally, the achievable measurement resolutions of the concentration and refractive index are 52 ppm and 1 × 10^-6 RIU, respectively, for the sodium chloride solution. The achievable measurement resolutions of the concentration and refractive index were 55 ppm and 8.8 × 10^-7 RIU, respectively, for the hydrochloric acid solution.

Impact of an indigenously produced multi-enzyme complex from Bacillus subtilis KT004404 on growth and blood parameters in broiler chicken

A 42-days experiment was conducted on a day old birds (n = 400) to evaluate the effect of enzyme supplements in feed on the growth, blood parameters, phosphorous content in bones, and nitrogen retention. Different treatments included: control (C) without enzyme supplement, while the other three groups included enzyme mixture T1 and T2 with two commercially available enzyme mix, and T3 with indigenously produced multi-enzyme complex from Bacillus subtilis KT004404. Birds that were fed with indigenously produced multi-enzyme complex showed significant weight gain as compared to other groups. The total feed intake of the birds fed with enzyme supplements was higher than the birds in the control group. The feed conversion ratio was significantly improved (p < 0.05) in treatment groups (T1, T2, T3) as compared to the control. The blood parameters which were analyzed included uric acid, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and serum proteins i.e. globulin and albumin. Birds fed with the enzyme in the group T1, T2 and T3 exhibited higher (p < 0.05) body weight gain. Tibia ash content was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in T1, T2, and T3 as compared to the control. The results of the current study indicate that supplementing poultry feed with the exogenous multi-enzyme produced from Bacillus subtilis KT004404 improved the growth of the birds, feed utilization, and exhibited beneficial effects on the blood parameters, phosphorous and nitrogen retention in broiler chicken.

Molecular Probes, Chemosensors, and Nanosensors for Optical Detection of Biorelevant Molecules and Ions in Aqueous Media and Biofluids

Synthetic molecular probes, chemosensors, and nanosensors used in combination with innovative assay protocols hold great potential for the development of robust, low-cost, and fast-responding sensors that are applicable in biofluids (urine, blood, and saliva). Particularly, the development of sensors for metabolites, neurotransmitters, drugs, and inorganic ions is highly desirable due to a lack of suitable biosensors. In addition, the monitoring and analysis of metabolic and signaling networks in cells and organisms by optical probes and chemosensors is becoming increasingly important in molecular biology and medicine. Thus, new perspectives for personalized diagnostics, theranostics, and biochemical/medical research will be unlocked when standing limitations of artificial binders and receptors are overcome. In this review, we survey synthetic sensing systems that have promising (future) application potential for the detection of small molecules, cations, and anions in aqueous media and biofluids. Special attention was given to sensing systems that provide a readily measurable optical signal through dynamic covalent chemistry, supramolecular host-guest interactions, or nanoparticles featuring plasmonic effects. This review shall also enable the reader to evaluate the current performance of molecular probes, chemosensors, and nanosensors in terms of sensitivity and selectivity with respect to practical requirement, and thereby inspiring new ideas for the development of further advanced systems.

Electrochemical Detection of Phosphate Ion in Body Fluids with a Magnesium Phosphate Modified Electrode

An electrochemical sensor for phosphate detection in body fluids was developed based on the hydration transition of magnesium hydrogen phosphate (newberyite, MgHPO₄·3H₂O). The sensor was fabricated through incubation of a multi-walled carbon nanotube/Nafion (MWCNT/Nafion) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in magnesium phosphate solution, where MgHPO₄·3H₂O was self-assembled on the electrode surface (denoted as MgP/MWCNT/Nafion). An electrooxidation peak at 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl was observed when the as-prepared electrode was subjected to a differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) scan in the presence of phosphate in acetate solution. When the DPV scan was performed in 0.4 - 1.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl, a linear relationship was observed between the peak height and the phosphate concentration in the range from 0.01 to 25 μM in the presence of 0.1 mM Mg²⁺ in the acetate solution with a limit of detection of 32 nM. And the sensor was successfully applied for phosphate detection in human urine and saliva samples with recoveries of 94.7 - 104.4 and 96 - 103.3%, respectively.
