A Theoretical Framework of Zinc-Decorated Inorganic Mg12O12 Nanoclusters for Efficient COCl2 Adsorption: A Step Forward toward the Development of COCl2 Sensing Materials

Ab Initio Study of the Graphyne-like γ-SiC Nanoflake for Toxic Gas-Sensing Applications

This study focuses on the geometrical, electronic, and optical properties of the γ-graphyne-like novel γ-SiC nanoflake of the γ-silicon carbide (SiC) monolayer using density functional theory calculations. γ-SiC was revealed to be a stable semiconducting nanoflake confirmed by a negative cohesive energy, real vibrational frequencies, and a 1.749 eV energy gap. The adsorption of COCl2, HCN, PH3, AsH3, CNCl, and C2N2 toxic gases on the γ-SiC nanoflake is also studied, which revealed an attractive gas-nanoflake interaction with the adsorption energy ranging from -0.21 to -0.38 eV. The adsorption results in a significant charge transfer between gas-adsorbent complexes. A significant variation in the energy gap and electrical conductivity was observed due to gas adsorption. γ-SiC showed maximum sensitivity at room temperature for CNCl gas. The entire process of adsorption is exothermic and thermodynamically stable. γ-SiC showed a high absorption coefficient over 104 orders with a significant variation in the absorption peak intensity and blue peak shifting. According to the quantum theory and reduced density gradient analysis, all of the gases are physisorbed on the γ-SiC nanoflake due to van der Waals interactions. The obtained results signify the usability of γ-SiC as a potential toxic gas sensor.

Enhanced hydrogen storage of alkaline earth metal-decorated Bn (n = 3-14) nanoclusters: a DFT study

CONTEXT

Boron-based nanostructures hold significant promise for revolutionizing hydrogen storage technologies due to their exceptional properties and potential in efficiently accommodating and interacting with hydrogen molecules. In this paper, boron-based Bn (n = 3-14) nanoclusters decorated with alkaline earth metals (AEM = Ca and Be) were investigated for hydrogen storage applications based on density function theory (DFT) calculations. To evaluate H2 adsorption capability, the adsorption energies, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), natural bond orbital (NBO), and quantum theory of atoms in molecule (QTAIM) analysis are performed. The primary aim of this research work is to achieve targeted value of 5.5 wt% set by the US Department of Energy (DOE) for the year 2025. The results revealed that B5Ca2, B6Ca2, and B10Ca2 structures have the ability to hold up to 12H2 molecules with gravimetric capacities of 15.20, 14.21, and 8.60 wt%, respectively, when compared to other boron structures decorated with calcium. Similarly, for Be-decorated structure, B3Be2 structure can accommodate 3H2 molecules with gravimetric capacity of 10.59 wt%. The result of this study indicates that AEM-decorated Bn nanoclusters hold great promise as potential materials for hydrogen storage.

METHODS

Density functional theory (DFT) approach at ωB97XD/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory is employed to investigate the possibility of storing H2 molecules on alkaline earth metal (AEM = Ca and Be)-decorated Bn (n = 3-14) nanoclusters. All DFT computations were performed using Gaussian 09 software. To calculate frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and quantum theory of atoms in molecule (QTAIM) analysis, we have used GaussView and Multiwfn software, respectively.

Decorating Mg12O12 Nanocage with Late First-Row Transition Metals To Act as Single-Atom Catalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

In the pursuit of sustainable clean energy sources, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attained significant interest from the scientific community. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are among the most promising candidates for future electrocatalysis because they possess high thermal stability, effective electrical conductivity, and excellent percentage atom utilization. In the present study, the applicability of late first-row transition metals (Fe-Zn) decorated on the magnesium oxide nanocage (TM@Mg12O12) as SACs for the HER has been studied, via density functional theory. The late first-row transition metals have been chosen as they have high abundance and are relatively low-cost. Among the studied systems, results show that the Fe@Mg12O12 SAC is the best candidate for catalyzing the HER reaction as it exhibits the lowest activation barrier for HER. Moreover, Fe@Mg12O12 shows high stability (Eint = -1.64 eV), which is essential in designing SACs to prevent aggregation of the metal. Furthermore, the results of the electronic properties' analysis showed that the HOMO-LUMO gap of the nanocage is decreased significantly upon doping of Fe (from 4.81 to 2.28 eV), indicating an increase in the conductivity of the system. This study highlights the potential application of the TM@nanocage SAC systems as effective HER catalysts.

Interaction of 5-Fluorouracil on the Surfaces of Pristine and Functionalized Ca12O12 Nanocages: An Intuition from DFT

The utilization of nanostructured materials for several biomedical applications has tremendously increased over the last few decades owing to their nanosizes, porosity, large surface area, sensitivity, and efficiency as drug delivery systems. Thus, the incorporation of functionalized and pristine nanostructures for cancer therapy offers substantial prospects to curb the persistent problems of ineffective drug administration and delivery to target sites. The potential of pristine (Ca₁₂O₁₂) and formyl (-CHO)- and amino (-NH₂)-functionalized (Ca₁₂O₁₂-CHO and Ca₁₂O₁₂-NH₂) derivatives as efficient nanocarriers for 5-fluorouracil (5FU) was studied at the B3LYP-GD3(BJ)/6-311++G(d,p) theoretical level in two electronic media (gas and solvent). To effectively account for all adsorption interactions of the drug on the investigated surfaces, electronic studies as well as topological analysis based on the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and noncovalent interactions were exhaustively utilized. Interestingly, the obtained results divulged that the 5FU drug interacted favorably with both Ca₁₂O₁₂ and its functionalized derivatives. The adsorption energies of pristine and functionalized nanostructures were calculated to be -133.4, -96.9, and -175.6 kcal/mol, respectively, for Ca₁₂O₁₂, Ca₁₂O₁₂-CHO, and Ca₁₂O₁₂-NH2. Also, both topological analysis and NBO stabilization analysis revealed the presence of interactions among O₃-H₃₂, O₂₇-C₂₄, O₁₀-C₂₇, and N₂₄-H₃₂ atoms of the drug and the surface. However, 5FU@Ca₁₂O₁₂-CHO molecules portrayed the least adsorption energy due to considerable destabilization of the molecular complex as revealed by the computed deformation energy. Therefore, 5FU@Ca₁₂O₁₂ and 5FU@Ca₁₂O₁₂-NH₂ acted as better nanovehicles for 5FU.

Transition Metal-Decorated Mg12O12 Nanoclusters as Biosensors and Efficient Drug Carriers for the Metformin Anticancer Drug

Drug carriers have been designed and investigated remarkably due to their effective use in the modern medication process. In this study, the decoration of the Mg₁₂O₁₂ nanocluster has been done with transition metals (Ni and Zn) for effective adsorption of metformin (anticancer drug). Decoration of Ni and Zn on a nanocluster allows two geometries, and similarly, the adsorption of metformin also provides two geometries. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory have been employed at the B3LYP with 6-311G(d,p) level. The decoration of Ni and Zn offers good attachment and detachment of the drug, which is observed from their good adsorption energy values. Further, the reduction in the energy band gap is noted in the metformin-adsorbed nanocluster, which allows high charge transfer from a lower energy level to a high energy level. The drug carrier systems show an efficient working mechanism in a water solvent with the visible-light absorption range. Natural bonding orbital and dipole moment values suggested that the adsorption of the metformin causes charge separation in these systems. Moreover, low values of chemical softness with a high electrophilic index recommended that these systems are naturally stable with the least reactivity. Thus, we offer novel kinds of Ni- and Zn-decorated Mg₁₂O₁₂ nanoclusters as efficient carriers for metformin and also recommend them to experimentalists for the future development of drug carriers.

Detection of Carbon, Sulfur, and Nitrogen Dioxide Pollutants with a 2D Ca12O12 Nanostructured Material

In recent times, nanomaterials have been applied for the detection and sensing of toxic gases in the environment owing to their large surface-to-volume ratio and efficiency. CO₂ is a toxic gas that is associated with causing global warming, while SO₂ and NO₂ are also characterized as nonbenign gases in the sense that when inhaled, they increase the rate of respiratory infections. Therefore, there is an explicit reason to develop efficient nanosensors for monitoring and sensing of these gases in the environment. Herein, we performed quantum chemical simulation on a Ca₁₂O₁₂ nanocage as an efficient nanosensor for sensing and monitoring of these gases (CO₂, SO₂, NO₂) by employing high-level density functional theory modeling at the B3LYP-GD3(BJ)/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory. The results obtained from our studies revealed that the adsorption of CO₂ and SO₂ on the Ca₁₂O₁₂ nanocage with adsorption energies of -2.01 and -5.85 eV, respectively, is chemisorption in nature, while that of NO₂ possessing an adsorption energy of -0.69 eV is related to physisorption. Moreover, frontier molecular orbital (FMO), global reactivity descriptors, and noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis revealed that the adsorption of CO₂ and SO₂ on the Ca₁₂O₁₂ nanocage is stable adsorption, while that of NO₂ is unstable adsorption. Thus, we can infer that the Ca₁₂O₁₂ nanocage is more efficient as a nanosensor in sensing CO₂ and SO₂ gases than in sensing NO₂ gas.

Potential of B24O24 nanocluster for sensing and delivering chlormethine anticancer drug: a DFT study

In the present research, the adsorption and release of chlormethine (CM) drug on the B₂₄O₂₄ nanocage have been reported in the water media and gas phase at GGA/PBE/DNP computational level. The interaction between B₂₄O₂₄ nanocage and CM drug shows that adsorptions of the chlormethine on B₂₄O₂₄ nanocage for the most stable complexes are - 1.47 to - 1.36 eV in the gas phase and water media, respectively. The CM adsorption caused a notable change in the band gap (E_g) and work function (Φ) of the B₂₄O₂₄ nanocage in the studied complexes. The binding of chlormethine to B₂₄O₂₄ also significantly increased the polarity of the drug carrier, which is a desirable property for drug delivery in biological environments. CM drugs can be released from the nanocage in the presence of an external electric field along the X-axis direction. The present study results show that the B₂₄O₂₄ nanocage is a possible carrier for delivering chlormethine drugs.

Metal-Doped Al12N12X (X = Na, Mg, K) Nanoclusters as Nanosensors for Carboplatin: Insight from First-Principles Computation

This theoretical study focuses on the adsorption, reactivity, topological analysis, and sensing behavior of metal-doped (K, Na, and Mg) aluminum nitride (Al12N12) nanoclusters using the first-principle density functional theory (DFT). All quantum chemical reactivity, natural bond orbital (NBO), free energies (ΔG, ΔH), and sensor parameters were investigated using the ωB97XD functional with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The trapping of carboplatin (cbp) onto the surfaces of doped Al12N12 was studied using four functionals PBE0-D3, M062X-D3, ωB97XD, and B3LYP-D3 at the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. Overall, the substantial change in the energy gap of the surfaces after the adsorption process affects the work function, field emission, and the electrical conductivity of the doped clusters, hence making the studied surfaces a better sensor material for detecting carboplatin. Higher free energies of solvation were obtained in polar solvents compared to nonpolar solvents. Moreover, negative solvation energies and adsorption energies were obtained, which therefore shows that the engineered surfaces are highly efficient in trapping carboplatin. The relatively strong adsorption energies show that the mechanism of adsorption is by chemisorption, and K- and Na-doped metal clusters acted as better sensors for carboplatin. Also, the topological analysis in comparison to previous studies shows that the nanoclusters exhibited very high stability with regard to their relevant binding energies and hydrogen bond interactions.

Designing and Encapsulation of Inorganic Al12N12 Nanoclusters with Be, Mg, and Ca Metals for Efficient Hydrogen Adsorption: A Step Forward Towards Hydrogen Storage Materials

Nanoclusters such as [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] have received increased attention due to their diverse applications in the fields of optoelectronics and energy storage. In this paper, we have investigated a series of alkaline earth metal (AEM)-encapsulated [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] nanoclusters for hydrogen adsorption. Thermodynamic adsorption parameters, optical and nonlinear optical properties were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. Encapsulation of AEMs (Be, Mg and Ca) is an effective strategy to improve the NLO reaction and thermodynamic and adsorption properties of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] nanoclusters. The adsorption energies ranging from [Formula: see text]26.57[Formula: see text]kJ/mol to [Formula: see text]213.33[Formula: see text]kJ/mol for the three guests (Be, Mg and Ca) capsulated [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] nanoclusters are observed. The adsorption energy is affected by the size of the nanocage. Therefore, Ca- and Mg-encapsulated cages show higher values of adsorption energy. Overall, an increase in adsorption energy ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]kJ/mol to [Formula: see text]91.06[Formula: see text]kJ/mol) is observed for (Be, Mg and Ca) encapsulated [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] nanoclusters compared to untreated [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] and H2-[Formula: see text][Formula: see text] cages. Moreover, adsorption of hydrogen on AEMs encapsulated in [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] leads to a decrease in the HOMO-LUMO energy gap with an enhancement of linear and nonlinear hyperpolarizability. All hydrogen-adsorbed AEMs [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] nanocages exhibit large [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] values, suggesting that these systems are potential candidates for optical materials. Various geometrical parameters such as frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), partial density of states, global quantum descriptor of reactivity, natural bond orbital testing and molecular electrostatic strength analyses were performed to investigate the thermodynamic stability of all the studied systems. The results obtained confirmed that the designed systems are suitable for hydrogen storage. Therefore, we recommend that these systems be investigated for their hydrogen storage and optical properties.
