Raman Spectroscopy Characterization of Amorphous Coke Generated in Industrial Processes

Zn-CD@Eu Ratiometric Fluorescent Probe for the Detection of Dipicolinic Acid, Uric Acid, and Ex Vivo Uric Acid Imaging

Development of reliable methods for the detection of potential biomarkers is of the utmost importance for an early diagnosis of critical diseases and disorders. In this study, a novel lanthanide-functionalized carbon dot-based fluorescent probe Zn-CD@Eu is reported for the ratiometric detection of dipicolinic acid (DPA) and uric acid (UA). The Zn-CD@Eu nanoprobe was obtained from a simple room-temperature reaction of zinc-doped carbon dots (Zn-CD) and the EDTA-Eu lanthanide complex. Under optimal conditions, a good linear response was obtained for DPA in two concentration ranges of 0-55 and 55-100 μM with a limit of detection of 0.53 and 2.2 μM respectively, which is significantly below the infectious dosage of anthrax (∼55 μM). Furthermore, the Zn-CD@Eu/DPA system was employed for the detection of UA with a detection limit of 0.36 μM in the linear range of 0-100 μM. The fluorescent probe was successfully implemented for determining DPA and UA in human blood serum, sweat, and natural water bodies with considerable recovery rates. In addition, the potential of the nanoprobe for ex vivo visualization of UA was demonstrated in fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) as a model organism.

Enhancing the Tribological Properties of Low-Density Polyethylene Using Hard Carbon Microfillers

The application of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been confined to packaging applications due to its inadequate mechanical and tribological characteristics. We propose enhancing LDPE by integrating hard carbon spheres (CSs) to improve its strength, frictional characteristics, and wear resistance. LDPE/CS composites were created by blending LDPE with varying CS amounts (0.5-8 wt.%). Analysis using scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy confirmed CS presence in the LDPE matrix, with X-ray diffraction showing no microstructural changes post-blending. Thermal characterization exhibited notable improvements in thermal stability (~4%) and crystallinity (~7%). Mechanical properties such as hardness and Young's modulus were improved by up to 4% and 24%, respectively. Tribological studies on different composite samples with varying surface roughness under various load and speed conditions revealed the critical role of surface roughness in reducing friction by decreasing real contact area and adhesive interactions between asperities. Increased load and speed amplified shear stress on asperities, possibly leading to deformation and failure. Notably, integrating CSs into LDPE, starting at 1 wt.%, effectively reduced friction and wear. The composite with the highest loading (8 wt.%) displayed the most significant tribological enhancement, achieving a remarkable 75% friction reduction and a substantial 78% wear reduction.

Mesoporous Single Atom-Cluster Fe-N/C Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysts Synthesized with Bottlebrush Block Copolymer-Templated Rapid Thermal Annealing

Current electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are either expensive (such as IrO2, RuO2) or/and exhibit high overpotential as well as sluggish kinetics. This article reports mesoporous earth-abundant iron (Fe)-nitrogen (N) doped carbon electrocatalysts with iron clusters and closely surrounding Fe-N4 active sites. Unique to this work is that the mechanically stable mesoporous carbon-matrix structure (79 nm in pore size) with well-dispersed nitrogen-coordinated Fe single atom-cluster is synthesized via rapid thermal annealing (RTA) within only minutes using a self-assembled bottlebrush block copolymer (BBCP) melamine-formaldehyde resin composite template. The resulting porous structure and domain size can be tuned with the degree of polymerization of the BBCP backbone, which increases the electrochemically active surface area and improves electron transfer and mass transport for an effective OER process. The optimized electrocatalyst shows a required potential of 1.48 V (versus RHE) to obtain the current density of 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH aqueous electrolyte and a small Tafel slope of 55 mV/decade at a given overpotential of 250 mV, which is significantly lower than recently reported earth-abundant electrocatalysts. Importantly, the Fe single-atom nitrogen coordination environment facilitates the surface reconstruction into a highly active oxyhydroxide under OER conditions, as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy, while the atomic clusters boost the single atoms reactive sites to prevent demetalation during the OER process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations support that the iron nitrogen environment and reconstructed oxyhydroxides are electrocatalytically active sites as the kinetics barrier is largely reduced. This work has opened a new avenue for simple, rapid synthesis of inexpensive, earth-abundant, tailorable, mechanically stable, mesoporous carbon-coordinated single-atom electrocatalysts that can be used for renewable energy production.

A Raman spectral marker for the iso-octyl chain structure of cholesterol

Raman spectroscopy provides label-free, specific analysis of biomolecular structure and interactions. It could have a greater impact with improved characterization of complex fingerprint vibrations. Many Raman peaks have been assigned to cholesterol, for example, but the molecular vibrations associated with those peaks are not known. In this report, time-dependent density functional theory calculations of the Raman spectrum of cholesterol are compared to measurements on microcrystalline powder to identify 23 peaks in the Raman spectrum. Among them, a band of six peaks is found to be sensitive to the conformational structure of cholesterol's iso-octyl chain. Calculations on 10 conformers in this spectral band are fit to experimental spectra to probe the cholesterol chain structure in purified powder and in phospholipid vesicles. In vesicles, the chain is found to bend perpendicular to the steroid rings, supporting the case that the chain is a dynamic structure that contributes to lipid condensation and other effects of cholesterol in biomembranes. Statement of Significance: Here we use density functional theory to identify a band of six peaks in cholesterol's Raman spectrum that is sensitive to the conformational structure of cholesterol's chain. Raman spectra were analyzed to show that in fluid-phase lipid membranes, about half of the cholesterol chains point perpendicular to the steroid rings. This new method of label-free structural analysis could make significant contributions to our understanding of cholesterol's critical role in biomembrane structure and function. More broadly, the results show that computational quantum chemistry Raman spectroscopy can make significant new contributions to molecular structure when spectra are interpreted with computational quantum chemistry.

Pt-doped Ru nanoparticles loaded on 'black gold' plasmonic nanoreactors as air stable reduction catalysts

This study introduces a plasmonic reduction catalyst, stable only in the presence of air, achieved by integrating Pt-doped Ru nanoparticles on black gold. This innovative black gold/RuPt catalyst showcases good efficiency in acetylene semi-hydrogenation, attaining over 90% selectivity with an ethene production rate of 320 mmol g-1 h-1. Its stability, evident in 100 h of operation with continuous air flow, is attributed to the synergy of co-existing metal oxide and metal phases. The catalyst's stability is further enhanced by plasmon-mediated concurrent reduction and oxidation of the active sites. Finite-difference time-domain simulations reveal a five-fold electric field intensification near the RuPt nanoparticles, crucial for activating acetylene and hydrogen. Kinetic isotope effect analysis indicates the contribution from the plasmonic non-thermal effects along with the photothermal. Spectroscopic and in-situ Fourier transform infrared studies, combined with quantum chemical calculations, elucidate the molecular reaction mechanism, emphasizing the cooperative interaction between Ru and Pt in optimizing ethene production and selectivity.

EPS-corona formation on graphene family nanomaterials (GO, rGO and graphene) and its role in mitigating their toxic effects in the marine alga Chlorella sp

GFNs have widespread applications but can harm marine systems due to excessive use and improper disposal. Algae-secreted EPS can mitigate nanomaterial harm, but their impact on GFN toxicity is understudied. Hence, in the present study, we investigated the toxicity of three GFNs, graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and graphene, in pristine and EPS-adsorbed forms in the marine alga Chlorella sp. At an environmentally relevant concentration of 1 mgL-1, all three GFNs induced considerable oxidative stress and impeded growth and photosynthetic activity of the algae. The order of the toxic potential followed GO > rGO > graphene. The various facets of adsorption of EPS (1:1 mixture of loosely bound, and tightly bound EPS) on GFNs were investigated through microscopy, surface chemical analyses, fluorescence quenching studies, and isotherm and kinetics studies. Amongst the pristine GFNs treated with algal cells, GO was found to exert the maximum negative effects on algal growth. Upon adsorption of EPS over the GFNs, a significant decline in growth inhibition was observed compared to the respective pristine forms which strongly correlated with reduced oxidative stress and enhanced photosynthetic parameters in the cells. The formation of a layer of eco-corona after interaction of GFNs with EPS possibly caused a barrier effect which in turn diminished their toxic potential. The findings from the present investigation offer valuable insights into the environmental toxicity of GFNs and show that the eco-corona formation may lessen the risk posed by these materials in the marine environment.

Shedding light on rechargeable Na/Cl2 battery

Advancing new ideas of rechargeable batteries represents an important path to meeting the ever-increasing energy storage needs. Recently, we showed rechargeable sodium/chlorine (Na/Cl2) (or lithium/chlorine Li/Cl2) batteries that used a Na (or Li) metal negative electrode, a microporous amorphous carbon nanosphere (aCNS) positive electrode, and an electrolyte containing dissolved aluminum chloride and fluoride additives in thionyl chloride [G. Zhu et al., Nature 596, 525-530 (2021) and G. Zhu et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 144, 22505-22513 (2022)]. The main battery redox reaction involved conversion between NaCl and Cl2 trapped in the carbon positive electrode, delivering a cyclable capacity of up to 1,200 mAh g-1 (based on positive electrode mass) at a ~3.5 V discharge voltage [G. Zhu et al., Nature 596, 525-530 (2021) and G. Zhu et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 144, 22505-22513 (2022)]. Here, we identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) that upon charging a Na/Cl2 battery, chlorination of carbon in the positive electrode occurred to form carbon-chlorine (C-Cl) accompanied by molecular Cl2 infiltrating the porous aCNS, consistent with Cl2 probed by mass spectrometry. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction observed the development of graphitic ordering in the initially amorphous aCNS under battery charging when the carbon matrix was oxidized/chlorinated and infiltrated with Cl2. The C-Cl, Cl2 species and graphitic ordering were reversible upon discharge, accompanied by NaCl formation. The results revealed redox conversion between NaCl and Cl2, reversible graphitic ordering/amorphourization of carbon through battery charge/discharge, and probed trapped Cl2 in porous carbon by XPS.

Microwave-assisted, performance-advantaged electrification of propane dehydrogenation

Nonoxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH) produces on-site propylene for value-added chemicals. While commercial, its modest selectivity and catalyst deactivation hamper the process efficiency and limit operation to lower temperatures. We demonstrate PDH in a microwave (MW)-heated reactor over PtSn/SiO2 catalyst pellets loaded in a SiC monolith acting as MW susceptor and a heat distributor while ensuring comparable conditions with conventional reactors. Time-on-stream experiments show active and stable operation at 500°C without hydrogen addition. Upon increasing temperature or feed partial pressure at high space velocity, catalysts under MWs show resistance in coking and sintering, high activity, and selectivity, starkly contrasting conventional reactors whose catalyst undergoes deactivation. Mechanistic differences in coke formation are exposed. Gas-solid temperature gradients are computationally investigated, and nanoscale temperature inhomogeneities are proposed to rationalize the different performances of the heating modes. The approach highlights the great potential of electrification of endothermic catalytic reactions.

Influence of carbon and graphene oxide nanoparticle on the adhesive properties of dentin bonding polymer: A SEM, EDX, FTIR study

OBJECTIVE

This study was aimed at including 2.5 wt.% of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and graphene oxide NPs (GNPs) in a control adhesive (CA) and then investigate the effect of this inclusion on their mechanical properties and its adhesion to root dentin.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) mapping were conducted to investigate the structural features and elemental distribution of CNPs and GNPs, respectively. These NPs were further characterized by Raman spectroscopy. The adhesives were characterized by evaluating their push-out bond strength (PBS), rheological properties, degree of conversion (DC) investigation, and failure type analysis.

RESULTS

The SEM micrographs revealed that the CNPs were irregular and hexagonal, whereas the GNPs were flake-shaped. EDX analysis showed that carbon (C), oxygen (O), and zirconia (Zr) were found in the CNPs, while the GNPs were composed of C and O. The Raman spectra for CNPs and GNPs revealed their characteristic bands (CNPs-D band: 1334 cm-1, GNPs-D band: 1341 cm-1, CNPs-G band: 1650 cm-1, and GNPs-G band: 1607 cm-1). The testing verified that the highest bond strength to root dentin were detected for GNP-reinforced adhesive (33.20 ± 3.55 MPa), trailed closely by CNP-reinforced adhesive (30.48 ± 3.10 MPa), while, the CA displayed lowest values (25.11 ± 3.60 MPa). The inter-group comparisons of the NP-reinforced adhesives with the CA revealed statistically significant results (p < 0.01). Failures of adhesive nature were most common in within the adhesives and root dentin. The rheological assessment results demonstrated a reduced viscosity for all the adhesives observed at advanced angular frequencies. All the adhesives verified suitable dentin interaction shown by hybrid layer and appropriate resin tag development. A reduced DC was perceived for both NP-reinforced adhesives, compared to the CA.

CONCLUSION

The present study's findings have demonstrated that 2.5% GNP adhesive revealed the highest, suitable root dentin interaction, and acceptable rheological properties. Nevertheless, a reduced DC was observed (matched with the CA). Prospective studies probing the influence of diverse concentrations of filler NPs on the adhesive's mechanical properties to root dentin are recommended.
