Abstract
Lignin-derivable bisguaiacols/bissyringols are viable alternatives to commercial bisphenols; however, many bisguaiacols/bissyringols (e.g., bisguaiacol F [BGF]) have unsubstituted bridging carbons between the aromatic rings, making them more structurally similar to bisphenol F (BPF) than bisphenol A (BPA) - both of which are suspected endocrine disruptors. Herein, we investigated the estrogenic activity (EA) and developmental toxicity of dimethyl-substituted bridging carbon-based lignin-derivable bisphenols (bisguaiacol A [BGA] and bissyringol A [BSA]). Notably, BSA showed undetectable EA at seven test concentrations (from 10-12 M to 10-6 M) in the MCF-7 cell proliferation assay, whereas BPA had detectable EA at five concentrations (from 10-10 M to 10-6 M). In silico results indicated that BSA had the lowest binding affinity with estrogen receptors. Moreover, in vivo chicken embryonic assay results revealed that lignin-derivable monomers had minimal developmental toxicity vs. BPA at environmentally relevant test concentrations (8.7-116 μg/kg). Additionally, all lignin-derivable compounds showed significantly lower expression fold changes (from ∼1.81 to ∼4.41) in chicken fetal liver tests for an estrogen-response gene (apolipoprotein II) in comparison to BPA (fold change of ∼11.51), which was indicative of significantly reduced estrogenic response. Altogether, the methoxy substituents on lignin-derivable bisphenols appeared to be a positive factor in reducing the EA of BPA alternatives.

Abstract
In an effort to improve the application performance of apigenin, β-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (BCDMOFs) known as porous materials were used to encapsulate apigenin via an innovative pH-adjusted method. The embedment efficiency had a significant positive pH dependence, reaching a maximum of 79.2 % ± 1.2 % at pH12. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated formation of apigenin/BCDMOFs composites, and exposure of BCDMOFs pores facilitated high embedment efficiency. Storage stability experiment and kinetic analysis showed degradation of apigenin/BCDMOFs composites was less than that of apigenin alone. Apigenin stability was increased by approximately 18 % after 7 days. BCDMOFs effectively encapsulated and controlled the release of apigenin, and the composites exhibited improved application performance in vitro.

Abstract
Numerous natural products found in our diet, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, can prevent the progression of cancer. Luteolin, a natural flavone, present in significant amounts in various fruits and vegetables plays a key role as a chemopreventive agent in treating various types of cancer. By inducing apoptosis, initiating cell cycle arrest, and decreasing angiogenesis, metastasis, and cell proliferation, luteolin is used to treat cancer. Its anticancer properties are attributed to its capability to engage with multiple molecular targeted sites and modify various signaling pathways in tumor cells. Luteolin has been shown to slow the spread of cancer in breast, colorectal, lung, prostate, liver, skin, pancreatic, oral, and gastric cancer models. It exhibits antioxidant properties and can be given to patients receiving Doxorubicin (DOX) chemotherapy to prevent the development of unexpected adverse reactions in the lungs and hematopoietic system subjected to DOX. Furthermore, it could be an excellent candidate for synergistic studies to overcome drug resistance in cancer cells. Accordingly, this review covers the recent literature related to the use of luteolin against different types of cancer, along with the mechanisms of action. In addition, the review highlights luteolin as a complementary medicine for preventing and treating cancer.

Abstract
Genistein (GN) has been highly recommended for its medicinal properties like anticancer, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, antiviral, and antioxidant activities among others. Recently, scientists realized that Genistein is an endocrine disruptor. It is an obesogen that interferes with the endocrine system causing obesity through many mechanisms like inducing adipocyte differentiation, lipid accumulation, and transformation of some stem cells into adipocytes (bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells for example) in vitro. Animal studies show that GN upregulates genes associated with adipogenesis like CCAAT/enhancer binding protein alpha (Cebpα), CCAAT/enhancer binding protein beta (Cebpβ), and PPARγ. In silico studies reveal a strong binding affinity for estrogen receptors. All these findings were contingent on concentration and tissues. It is beyond dispute that obesity is one of the most frustrating medical conditions under the sun. The pathophysiology of this disease was first attributed to a high-calorie diet and lack of physical activity. However, studies proved that these two factors are not enough to account for obesity in both children and adults. This mini review highlights how Genistein interaction with the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma protein can cause obesity.

Abstract
Flavonoids, low molecular weight polyphenolic compounds, are important natural products that belong to plant secondary metabolites. They have diverse biomedical applications such as antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, enzyme inhibitory, antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic, aromatase inhibitory effects, etc. Some of the flavonoids have been exported for bindings with certain DNA and tRNA structures both experimentally and computationally. RNA-DNA hybrid (RDH) falls into an important category of noncanonical nucleic acid structures that have many important biological functions. We have investigated the interaction of RDH structures with some of the dietary flavonoids with the aid of computational methods such as docking and molecular dynamics simulation. The presence of the - OH group on the ligand and the availability of a proper binding pocket in the macromolecule are the two main factors driving the binding preference. Thus, this computationally guided report explains the binding of the flavonoids with RDH structures to assist the researchers in designing noncanonical nucleic acid-targeted drug molecules.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract
The emergence of the highly contagious respiratory disease, COVID-19, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has become a significant global public health concern. To combat this virus, researchers have focused on developing antiviral strategies that target specific viral components, such as the main protease (Mpro), which plays a crucial role in SARS-CoV-2 replication. While many compounds have been identified as potent inhibitors of Mpro, only a few have been translated into clinical use due to the potential risk-benefit trade-offs. Development of systemic inflammatory response and bacterial co-infection in patients belong to severe, frequent complications of COVID-19. In this context, we analysed available data on the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities of the SARS-CoV-2 Mpro inhibitors for possible implementation in the treatment of complicated and long COVID-19 cases. Synthetic feasibility and ADME properties were calculated and included for better characterisation of the compounds' predicted toxicity. Analysis of the collected data resulted in several clusters pointing to the most prospective compounds for further study and design. The complete tables with collected data are attached in Supplementary material for use by other researchers.

Abstract
Flavonoids are a large subgroup of polyphenols known to be sourced from over 6000 natural products, including fruits, vegetables, bark, and herbs. Due to their antioxidant properties, flavonoids have been implicated as a therapy source for many diseases and conditions, including inflammation, vasculitis, venous insufficiency, and hemorrhoids. Currently, some flavonoids are being researched for their antioxidant ability concerning neuroprotection. These flavonoids can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and, depending on the specific flavonoid, retain adequate bioavailability in certain brain regions. Further data suggest that flavonoids could have a strong anti-inflammatory effect in the brain, which not only could be a robust therapeutic source for known neuroinflammatory diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease or Parkinson's Disease but also could be a therapeutic source for ischemic or hemorrhagic conditions such as a stroke. While flavonoid toxicity exists, they are relatively safe and non-invasive drugs from natural origins. As such, exploring the known mechanisms and therapies may highlight and establish flavonoid therapy as a viable source of therapy for stroke patients. As stated, many flavonoids are already being isolated, purified, and implemented in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. As these flavonoids proceed to clinical trials, it will be important to understand how they function as a therapy, primarily as antioxidants, and by other secondary mechanisms. This review aims to elucidate those mechanisms and explore the neuroprotective role of flavonoids.

Abstract
Objective The multi-systemic inflammation as a result of COVID-19 can persevere long after the initial symptoms of the illness have subsided. These effects are referred to as Long-COVID. Our research focused on the contribution of the Spike protein S1 subunit of SARS-CoV-2 (Spike S1) on the lung inflammation mediated by NLRP3 inflammasome machinery and the cytokine releases, interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-1beta, and IL-18, in lung epithelial cells. This study has attempted to identify the naturally- occurring agents that act against inflammation-related long-COVID. The seed meal of Perilla frutescens (P. frutescens), which contains two major dietary polyphenols (rosmarinic acid and luteolin), has been reported to exhibit anti-inflammation activities. Therefore, we have established the ethyl acetate fraction of P. frutescens seed meal (PFEA) and determined its anti-inflammatory effects on Spike S1 exposure in A549 lung cells. Methods PFEA was established using solvent-partitioned extraction. Rosmarinic acid (Ra) and luteolin (Lu) in PFEA were identified using the HPLC technique. The inhibitory effects of PFEA and its active compounds against Spike S1-induced inflammatory response in A549 cells were determined by RT-PCR and ELISA. The mechanistic study of anti-inflammatory properties of PFEA and Lu were determined using western blot technique. Results PFEA was found to contain Ra (388.70 ± 11.12 mg/g extract) and Lu (248.82 ± 12.34 mg/g extract) as its major polyphenols. Accordingly, A549 lung cells were pre-treated with PFEA (12.5-100 μg/mL) and its two major compounds (2.5-20 μg/mL) prior to the Spike S1 exposure at 100 ng/mL. PFEA dose-dependently exhibited anti-inflammatory properties upon Spike S1-exposed A549 cells through IL-6, IL-1β, IL-18, and NLRP3 gene suppressions, as well as IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-18 cytokine releases with statistical significance (p < 0.05). Importantly, Lu possesses superior anti-inflammatory properties when compared with Ra (p < 0.01). Mechanistically, PFEA and Lu effectively attenuated a Spike S1-induced inflammatory response through downregulation of the JAK1/STAT3-inflammasome-dependent inflammatory pathway as evidenced by the downregulation of NLRP3, ASC, and cleaved-caspase-1 of the NLRP3 inflammasome components and by modulating the phosphorylation of JAK1 and STAT3 proteins (p < 0.05). Conclusion The findings suggested that luteolin and PFEA can modulate the signaling cascades that regulate Spike S1-induced lung inflammation during the incidence of Long-COVID. Consequently, luteolin and P. frutescens may be introduced as potential candidates in the preventive therapeutic strategy for inflammation-related post-acute sequelae of COVID-19.
