Alkyl Pyridinium Iodocuprate(I) Clusters: Structural Types and Charge Transfer Behavior

Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical Properties of Yellow-Green and Blue Photoluminescent Dinuclear and Octanuclear Copper(I) Iodide Complexes with a Disilanylene-Bridged Bispyridine Ligand

The synthesis, structural, and photophysical investigations of CuI complexes with a disilanylene-bridged bispyridine ligand 1 are herein presented. Dinuclear (2) and ladder-like (3) octanuclear copper(I) complexes were straightforwardly prepared by exactly controlling the ratio of CuI/ligand 1. Single-crystal X-ray analysis confirmed that dinuclear complex 2 had no apparent π…π stacking whereas octanuclear complex 3 had π…π stacking in the crystal packing. In the solid state, the complexes display yellow-green (λ_em = 519 nm, Φ = 0.60, τ = 11 µs, 2) and blue (λ_em = 478 nm, Φ = 0.04, τ = 2.6 µs, 3) phosphorescence, respectively. The density functional theory calculations validate the differences in their optical properties. The difference in the luminescence efficiency between 2 and 3 is attributed to the presence of π…π stacking and the different luminescence processes.

Room temperature stable multitalent: highly reactive and versatile copper guanidine complexes in oxygenation reactions

Inspired by the efficiency of natural enzymes in organic transformation reactions, the development of synthetic catalysts for oxygenation and oxidation reactions under mild conditions still remains challenging. Tyrosinases serve as archetype when it comes to hydroxylation reactions involving molecular oxygen. We herein present new copper(I) guanidine halide complexes, capable of the activation of molecular oxygen at room temperature. The formation of the reactive bis(µ-oxido) dicopper(III) species and the influence of the anion are investigated by UV/Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and density functional theory. We highlight the catalytic hydroxylation activity towards diverse polycyclic aromatic alcohols under mild reaction conditions. The selective formation of reactive quinones provides a promising tool to design phenazine derivatives for medical applications.

Synthesis and crystal structures of two layered Cu(I) and Ag(I) iodidometalates

Cu(I) and Ag(I) iodidometalates have been investigated for both their rich structural chemistry, as well as for useful properties like luminescence. Here, we present the synthesis and crystal structure of (BzA)[MI2] · 0.5 H2O (BzA = benzylammonium; M=Cu (1), Ag (2)). The two compounds are isostructural and show a previously unknown layered anion motif that can be described as a 44 net constructed via corner-sharing of M2I6 subunits, built from two edge-sharing MI4 tetrahedra.

Crystal structure and characterization of a new copper(II) chloride dimer with methyl(pyridin-2-ylmethylidene)amine

The new copper(II) complex [CuLCl₂]₂, where L is a product of Schiff base condensation between methyl­amine and 2-pyridine­carbaldehyde, is built of discrete centrosymmetric dimers.

The new copper(II) complex, namely, di-μ-chlorido-bis­{chlorido­[meth­yl(pyri­din-2-yl­methyl­idene)amine-κ²N,N′]copper(II)}, [Cu₂Cl₄(C₇H₈N₂)₂], (I), with the ligand 2-pyridyl­methyl-N-methyl­imine (L, a product of Schiff base condensation between methyl­amine and 2-pyridine­carbaldehyde) is built of discrete centrosymmetric dimers. The coordination about the Cu^II ion can be described as distorted square pyramidal. The base of the pyramid consists of two nitro­gen atoms from the bidentate chelate L [Cu—N = 2.0241 (9), 2.0374 (8) Å] and two chlorine atoms [Cu—Cl = 2.2500 (3), 2.2835 (3) Å]. The apical position is occupied by another Cl atom with the apical bond being significantly elongated at 2.6112 (3) Å. The trans angles of the base are 155.16 (3) and 173.79 (2)°. The Cu⋯Cu separation in the dimer is 3.4346 (3) Å. In the crystal structure, the loosely packed dimers are arranged in stacks propagating along the a axis. The X-band polycrystalline 77 K EPR spectrum of (I) demonstrates a typical axial pattern characteristic of mononuclear Cu^II complexes. Compound (I) is redox active and shows a cyclic voltammetric response with E_1/2 = −0.037 V versus silver–silver chloride electrode (SSCE) assignable to the reduction peak of Cu^II/Cu^I in methanol as solvent.

Alkyl pyridinium iodocyanocuprate(i) chains (RPy)2[Cu2I3(CN)]: insight into structural, electronic and spectroscopic properties

Equimolar mixtures of copper(i) iodide (CuI) and copper(i) cyanide (CuCN) react with N-alkyl pyridinium iodides (RPy+I-, R = Me, Et, n-propyl = Pr, and n-butyl = Bu) to produce pyridinium iodocyanocuprate(i) salts, (RPy)2[Cu2I3CN]. Crystal structures reveal isostructural anionic chains consisting of trigonal pyramidal Cu2(μ2-I)3 clusters bridged by C/N-disordered cyano units. The 1-D chains are nearly linear but vary with respect to whether adjacent clusters are staggered or eclipsed. A detailed investigation via Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals that hydrogen bonding between the triiodide group and pyridinium cation are the driver for assembly in these systems. Interestingly, spectroscopic investigations of absorption edge and emission energies show a general red shift with increasing hydrogen bonding. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were used to determine the electronic structure and band assignment of these materials to elucidate the nature behind this structure/function relationship.

Synthesis of dual emitting iodocuprates: can solvents switch the reaction outcome?

An unprecedented structure-directing effect of solvents in halocuprate self-assembly reactions was discovered. The compounds presented show remarkable dual luminescence, strongly changing the emission color upon varying temperature.
