Abstract
Glutathione (GSH) is an essential antioxidant in the human body, but its detection is difficult due to the interference of complex components in serum. Herein, hollow double-layer Pt@CeO2 nanospheres were developed as oxidase mimetics, and the light-assisted oxidase mimetics effects were found. The oxidase activity was enhanced significantly by utilizing the synergistic effect of Schottky junction and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Pt under UV light. A novel GSH colorimetric-fluorescent-SERS sensing platform was established, with the sensing performance notably boosted by using the light-assisted oxidase mimetics effects. This platform boasts an exceptionally low detection limit (LOD) of 0.084 μM, while the detection time was shortened from 10 min to just 2 min. The anti-interference detection with high recovery rate (96.84%-107.4 %) in real serum made it be promising for practical application.

Abstract
As an emerging nanoprobe, surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) tags hold significant promise in sensing and bioimaging applications due to their attractive merits of anti-photobleaching ability, high sensitivity and specificity, multiplex, and low background capabilities. Recently, several reviews have proposed the application of SERS tags in different fields, however, the specific sensing strategies of SERS tags-based sensors for cellular molecules have not yet been systematically summarized. To provide beneficial and comprehensive insights into the advanced SERS tags technique at the cellular level, this review systematically elaborated on the latest advances in SERS tags-based sensors for cellular molecules detection and imaging. The general SERS tags-based sensing strategies for biomolecules and ions were first introduced according to molecular classes. Then, aiming at such molecules located in the extracellular, cellular membrane and intracellular regions, the tailored strategies by designing and manipulating SERS tags were summarized and explored through several key examples. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of developing high performance of advanced SERS tags were briefly discussed to provide effective guidance for further development and extended applications.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an important gas signal molecule, participates in intercellular signal transmission and plays a considerable role in physiology and pathology. However, in-situ monitoring of H2S level during the processes of material transport between cells remains considerably challenging. Herein, a cell membrane-targeted surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanoprobe was designed to quantitatively detect H2S secreted from living cells. The nanoprobes were fabricated by assembling cholesterol-functionalized DNA strands and dithiobis(phenylazide) (DTBPA) molecules on core-shell gold nanostars embedded with 4-mercaptoacetonitrile (4-MBN) (AuNPs@4-MBN@Au). Thus, three functions including cell-membrane targeted via cholesterol, internal standard calibration, and responsiveness to H2S through reduction of azide group in DTBPA molecules were integrated into the nanoprobes. In addition, the nanoprobes can quickly respond to H2S within 90 s and sensitively, selectively, and reliably detect H2S with a limit of detection as low as 37 nM due to internal standard-assisted calibration and reaction specificity. Moreover, the nanoprobes can effectively target on cell membrane and realize SERS visualization of dynamic H2S released from HeLa cells. By employing the proposed approach, an intriguing phenomenon was observed: the other two major endogenous gas transmitters, carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO), exhibited opposite effect on H2S production in living cells stimulated by related gas release molecules. In particular, the introduction of CO inhibited the generation of H2S in HeLa cells, while NO promoted its output. Thus, the nanoprobes can provide a robust method for investigating H2S-related extracellular metabolism and intercellular signaling transmission.

Abstract
Metabolic disorders involving endogenous H2S have been linked to a variety of serious human diseases, particularly cancer. In this study, we employed nanofibers with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity for the detection of H2S within live cells. These nanofibers were chosen for their minimal invasiveness, high spatial resolution, and enhanced SERS sensitivity. To improve the performance of SERS, highly sensitive core-shell multibranched-Au NPs (MBAuNP)@Ag NPs were decorated on the nanofibers as SERS tags for H2S detection. A SERS probe named MBN, embedded between the Au core and Ag shell, was utilized for quantitative detection. These nanofibers exhibited excellent reproducibility (relative standard deviation (RSD) within 5.7 %) and demonstrated a strong linear relationship with sulfide concentrations ranging from 50 nM to 1 μM, with an estimated detection limit of 0.12 nM. As a proof of concept, the aforementioned nanofibers were successfully applied to detect endogenous H2S in living cells, offering a potential analytical method in the related research of detection.

Abstract
Halide perovskites have emerged as a highly promising class of photoelectric materials. However, the application of lead-based perovskites has been hindered by their toxicity and relatively weak stability. In this work, a composite material comprising a lead-free perovskite cesium copper iodide (CsCu2I3) nanocrystal and a metal-organic framework (MOF-801) has been synthesized through an in situ growth approach. The resulting composite material, denoted as CsCu2I3/MOF-801, demonstrates outstanding stability and exceptional optoelectronic characteristics. MOF-801 may serve a dual role by acting as a protective barrier between CsCu2I3 nanocrystals and the external environment, as well as promoting the efficient transfer of photogenerated charge carriers, thereby mitigating their recombination. Consequently, CsCu2I3/MOF-801 demonstrates its utility by providing both stability and a notably high initial photocurrent. Leveraging the inherent reactivity between H2S and the composite material, which results in the formation of Cu2S and structural alteration, an exceptionally sensitive photoelectrochemical sensor for H2S detection has been designed. This sensor exhibits a linear detection range spanning from 0.005 to 100 μM with a remarkable detection limit of 1.67 nM, rendering it highly suitable for precise quantification of H2S in rat brains. This eco-friendly sensor significantly broadens the application horizon of perovskite materials and lays a robust foundation for their future commercialization.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a multifunctional gaseous signaling molecule that plays a vital role in several biological processes. In the present study, a BODIPY-based fluorescent probe called 8-[4-((1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane)methyl)phenyl]-4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4-bora-3a, 4a-diaza-s-indacene (BA-Cyclen)-Cu was designed and synthesized; this probe is a Cu(Ⅱ) complex that uses Cu(Ⅱ) decomplexation to achieve the sensitive and rapid detection of aqueous H2S via the "turn-on" mode. We observed that BA-Cyclen-Cu exhibited good membrane permeability, low toxicity, and lysosome-targeting ability, facilitating H2S detection in living cells. Furthermore, we demonstrated the potential biological applications of the probe by measuring exogenous H2S originating from Na2S and GYY4137, a slow-release donor, and endogenous H2S generated via the catalysis of cystathionine-β-synthase in both normal (H9c2) and cancerous (U87) cells. Moreover, BA-Cyclen-Cu was successfully used to detect exogenous H2S by the external standard method in fetal bovine serum, the serum of a healthy person, and the serum of a patient with liver cancer.

Abstract
Discovery of the biological signaling roles of H2S has spurred great interest in developing reliable methods for its accurate detection and quantification. As considerable variation in its levels is seen during pathological conditions such as sepsis, real-time quantification methods have relevance in diagnosis as well. Of various approaches, reaction-based probes which respond through 'off-on' fluorescence emission remain the most studied. Since the intensity of emission is related to the analyte concentration in these measurements, the presence of built-in features which provide an opportunity for internal referencing will be advantageous. In view of this, a dual mode response system that senses H2S through characteristic fluorescence and Raman (SERS) signals based on a 1H-pyrrol-3(2H)-one scaffold was developed and is the main highlight of this report. This probe offers several advantages such as fast response (<1 min), and high selectivity and sensitivity with a detection limit of ∼7 nM. Imaging of H2S in HepG2 cells, making use of the SERS signal from the thiolysis product is also demonstrated.

Abstract
Developing precise and effective strategies for cancer identification and imaging is attractive due to their importance for early cancer detection, prognosis, and subsequent treatment. Herein, we reported a novel bioorthogonal surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanoprobe for accurate cancer cell imaging. A novel core-molecule-shell nanoflower (Au@4-MBN@Au) with rich electromagnetic hot spots and enhanced Raman scattering was first synthesized by optimizing the embedded concentrations of 4-mercaptobenzonitrile (4-MBN). Then, Au@4-MBN@Au was further modified with FA-PEG-SH molecules to acquire the bioorthogonal SERS nanoprobe Au@4-MBN@Au-PEG-FA. The SERS nanoprobe illustrated a robust and stable nitrile stretching vibration Raman signal (2223 cm-1) in the cellular silent region, ensuring high sensitivity and ultra-accuracy SERS imaging of cancer cells. Furthermore, cell imaging results demonstrated Au@4-MBN@Au-PEG-FA could recognize FR-positive HeLa cells with high selectivity due to the high affinity between folate receptor and folic acid. More notably, Au@4-MBN@Au-PEG-FA has been applied to identify FR-positive Hela cells from co-cultured cancer cells with similar morphology by SERS imaging for the first time. With improved signal-to-background ratio, high selectivity, and excellent stability, we anticipate the SERS nanoprobe Au@4-MBN@Au-PEG-FA could be applied for FR-related cancer theranostics and clinical detection in the future.

Abstract
Skin interstitial fluid (ISF)-based microneedle (MN) sensing has recently exhibited wide promise for the minimally invasive and painless diagnosis of diseases. However, it is still a great challenge to diagnose more disease types due to the limited in situ sensing techniques and insufficient ISF biomarker sources. Herein, ISF is employed to pioneer the tracking of acute peritonitis progression via surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) tags labeled MNs patch technique. Densely deposited core-satellite gold nanoparticles and 3-mercaptophenylboronic acid as a Raman reporter enable the developed MNs patch with high sensitivity and selectivity in the determination of H2O2, an indicator of peritonitis development. Importantly, the MNs patch not only reliably tracks the different states of peritonitis but also evaluates the efficacy of drugs in the treatment of peritonitis, as evidenced by the altered SERS signal consistent with plasma pro-inflammatory factor (TNF-α) and peritoneum pathological manifestations. Interestingly, the major source of H2O2 in ISF of acute peritonitis investigated may not be through conventional blood capillary filtration pathway. This work provides a new route and technique for the early diagnosis of acute peritonitis and the evaluation of drug therapy effects. The developed MNs patch is promising to serve as a universal sensing tool to greatly enrich the variety and prospect of ISF-based disease diagnosis.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can not only be regarded as a critical gas signal transduction substance, but also its excess levels can lead to a range of diseases. Currently, the accurate analysis combined with electrochemical (EC) or photothermal (PT) technology for H2S in a complex biological system remains a significant challenge. Herein, an endogenous H2S-triggered heterojunction cuprous oxide/gold/copper metal organic framework (Cu2O/Au/HKUST-1) nanoprobe is designed for dual-mode EC- second near-infrared (NIR-II)/PT analysis in tumor cells with high sensitivity and simplicity. Dual-mode EC quantification - PT is achieved through "off-on" mode of EC and PT signals based on electronic transfer and biosynthesis via an in situ sulfuration reaction. Under the optimum conditions, the EC quantification mode for trace H2S exhibits a wide linear range and an excellent limit of detection of 0.1 μM. More importantly, the dual-mode can display the selective detection of trace H2S in living tumor cells because of the specific interaction between copper ion and H2S. These results provide a new EC-PT promising biosensing platform for noninvasive intelligent detection of H2S in living tumor cells.

Internal Standard Assisted Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Nanoprobe with 4-NTP as Recognition Unit for Ratiometric Imaging Hydrogen Sulfide in Living Cells. Anal Chem 2022; 94:14675-14681. Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as the third endogenous gasotransmitter, is closely associated with various physiological and pathological processes, whereas many aspects of its functions remain unclear. Effective tools for the accurate detection of H2S in living organisms are urgently needed. We herein reported an internal standard assisted surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanoprobe for ratiometric detection of H2S in vitro and in living cells based on the reduction of nitros with H2S. This nanoprobe consists of an internal standard (4-mercaptobenzonitrile, MPBN) embedded core-molecule-shell Au nanoflower (Au@MPBN@Au) as the high plasmonic active SERS substrate and the 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) molecule immobilized on the surface as the H2S recognition unit. With the addition of H2S, the nitros peak (1329 cm-1) decreased. Meanwhile, three obvious new peaks appeared at 1139, 1387, and 1433 cm-1, which were related to the vibration of the dimerized product 4,4'-dimercaptoazobisbenzene (DMAB) of 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP). However, the peak intensity at 2223 cm-1 derived from MPBN was not influenced by the outer environment. Thus, the H2S level was able to be determined based on the ratio of two peak intensities (I1139/I2223) with a detection limit as low as 0.24 μM. Notably, we have proved that SERS nanoprobe Au@MPBN@Au@4-NTP could ratiometrically image both the endogenous and exogenous H2S in living cells. We anticipate that Au@MPBN@Au@4-NTP could be applied for the study of H2S-related physiological function in the future.
