Ultrasound-Induced Wireless Energy Harvesting: From Materials Strategies to Functional Applications

Wireless energy harvesting represents an emerging technology that can be integrated into a variety of systems for biomedical, physical, and chemical functions. The miniaturization and ease of implementation are the main challenges for the development of wireless energy harvesting systems. Unlike most reported wireless energy harvesting technologies represented by electromagnetic coupling, the new generation of ultrasound-induced wireless energy harvesting (UWEH) that use propagating ultrasound waves to carry the available energy provides a strategy with higher resolution, deeper penetration, and more security, especially in nanodevices and implantable medical systems where a long-term stable power is required. Recently, advances in nanotechnologies, microelectronics, and biomedical systems are revolutionizing UWEH. In this article, an overview of recent developments in UWEH technologies that use a variety of material strategies and system designs based on the piezoelectric and capacitive energy harvesting mechanisms is provided. Practical applications are also presented, including wireless power for bio-implantable devices, direct cell/tissue electrical stimulations, wireless recording and communication in nervous systems, ultrasonic modulated drug delivery, self-powered acoustic sensors, and ultrasound-induced piezoelectric catalysis. Finally, perspectives and opportunities are also highlighted.

Engineering Graphene Oxide/Water Interface from First Principles to Experiments for Electrostatic Protective Composites

From the global spread of COVID-19 we learned that SARS-CoV-2 virus can be transmitted via respiratory liquid droplets. In this study, we performed first-principles calculations suggesting that water molecules once in contact with the graphene oxide (GO) layer interact with its functional groups, therefore, developing an electric field induced by the heterostructure formation. Experiments on GO polymer composite film supports the theoretical findings, showing that the interaction with water aerosol generates a voltage output signal of up to -2 V. We then developed an electrostatic composite fiber by the coagulation method mixing GO with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). These findings could be used to design protective fabrics with antiviral activity against negatively charged spike proteins of airborne viruses.

Ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of tumor cells based on multiple layer CdS quantum dots-functionalized polystyrene microspheres and graphene oxide - polyaniline composite

In this work, a novel ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor was developed for the detection of K562 cell by a signal amplification strategy based on multiple layer CdS QDs functionalized polystyrene microspheres(PS) as bioprobe and graphene oxide(GO) -polyaniline(PANI) composite as modified materials of capture electrode. Due to electrostatic force of different charge, CdS QDs were decorated on the surface of PS by PDDA (poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium chloride)) through a layer-by-layer(LBL) assemble technology, in which the structure of multiple layer CdS QDs increased the detection signal intensity. Moreover, GO-PANI composite not only enhanced the electron transfer rate, but also increased tumor cells load ratio. The resulting electrochemical biosensor was used to detect K562 cells with a lower detection limit of 3 cellsmL^-1 (S/N = 3) and a wider linear range from 10 to 1.0 × 10⁷ cellsmL^-1. This sensor was also used for mannosyl groups on HeLa cells and Hct116 cells, which showed high specificity and sensitivity. This signal amplification strategy would provide a novel approach for detection, diagnosis and treatment for tumor cells.
