Abstract
The development of biodegradable and biocompatible fluorescent materials with tunable emission in the solid state has become increasingly relevant for smart packaging and biomedical applications. Molecular packing and conformations play a critical role in tuning the solid-state photophysical properties of fluorescent materials. In this work, tunable emission of bioactive curcumin was achieved through the manipulation of the crystallization conditions and the polymorphic form of covalently linked poly(L-lactide) in the curcumin-embedded poly(L-lactide) (curcumin-PLLA). In the melt-crystallized curcumin-PLLA, with the increase in the isothermal crystallization temperature, a bathochromic shift in the fluorescence of curcumin-PLLA was observed due to the change in the intramolecular conjugation length of curcumin. The change in the isothermal crystallization temperature of curcumin-PLLA resulted in the rotation of the terminal phenyl rings of curcumin with respect to the central keto-enol group due to the covalently linked helical PLLA chains. In addition, solvent-induced single crystals and a gel of curcumin-PLLA were prepared and the influence of the polymorphic form of PLLA on the emission behavior of curcumin-PLLA was investigated. The results suggest that the polymer chain packing, crystallization conditions, morphology, and polymorphic form could play an influential role in dictating the fluorescence properties of fluorophore-embedded polymers.

Abstract
Microwave-accelerated ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters catalyzed by ionic liquid (IL) anions, intercalated into layered double hydroxides (LDHs), has been recently described as a fast and environmentally friendly synthetic way to prepare biodegradable polyester/LDH nanocomposites. However, to observe this synergistic catalytic effect between microwaves and IL anions and to achieve a homogeneous structure of the final polymer nanocomposite, the IL anions must be efficiently intercalated inside the LDH structure. Herein, we investigate the effects of various metal compositions of M2+/Al3+ LDHs (M = Mg, Co, and Ca) and different LDH synthetic routes (one-step direct coprecipitation, two-step coprecipitation/anion exchange, and two-step urea/anion exchange) on the intercalation efficiency of trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinate IL. The most effective IL anion intercalation was observed for Ca2+/Al3+ LDH prepared using the two-step method consisting of coprecipitation and subsequent anion exchange. After optimization, this synthetic pathway led to the production of LDHs with intercalated IL anions and a reduced amount of intercalated water (<0.6 wt %). The catalytic ability of thus optimized LDH particles was demonstrated on the microwave-assisted ROP of ε-caprolactone, showing rapid progress of polymerization. Within minutes, the polycaprolactones with an average molecular mass in the range of 20 000-50 000 g/mol containing fully delaminated and exfoliated LDH nanoparticles were obtained.

Abstract
Crystallization-induced microscopic stress and its relaxation play a vital role in understanding crystallization behavior and mechanism. However, the real-time measurements for stress and its relaxation seem to be an unachievable task due to difficulties in simultaneous labeling, spatiotemporal discrimination, and continuous quantification. We designed a micron-sized fluorescent probe, whose fluorescence can respond to stress-induced environmental rigidity and whose three-dimensional (3D) flow can respond to stress relaxation. Using the as-prepared fluorescent probe, we established a versatile strategy to realize the real-time 3D imaging of stress and its relaxation in the crystallization process. The rigidity-responsive fluorescence clearly indicated the stress, while the 3D flow movement could quantify the stress relaxation. It is revealed that stress in spherulites increased dramatically as a result of the suppression of stress relaxation in polymer melts. The developed method provides a novel avenue to simultaneously detect stress and its relaxation in various semicrystalline polymers at the single-particle level. This success would achieve the microscopic ways to guide the development of advanced crystallization-dependent materials.

Abstract
Biocomposites based on biodegradable polybutylene succinate (PBS) and organomodified clays (OMt) were prepared by melt blending process. The OMt nanofillers were obtained by ion exchange reaction between sodium montmorillonite (Mt) and gemini surfactants bearing 4-decyloxyphenylacetamide hydrophobic chains and ethylene or hexylene spacer. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and rheological measurement results showed that the investigated hybrids present a uniform dispersion with an exfoliation of clay into the PBS matrix, particularly for short spacer surfactant based composites. The effect of organoclay loading and composition on the thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties was also investigated. High clay loading and long gemini surfactant spacer lead to substantial improvement of Young modulus values by 21%, while low clay content induces a reduction of the hybrid's crystallinity due to strong OMt-PBS interactions. Compared to that of the neat PBS film, a significant reduction of the water vapor permeability (WVP) by 28% was obtained by adding only 3 wt % of PBS/OMt (2) which opens up prospects for this material in the field of food packaging. This study shows that gemini surfactant-modified organoclays can be used as effective nanofillers in a PBS matrix to access to value-added nanocomposites.

Abstract
Copper azide (CA) is one of the preferred primary explosives in the micro-initiating device, and it is of conducive significance to develop high-content CA-modified materials. In this work, we reported two types of CA composites with CA nanorods embedded in carbon nanosheets (CA/C) and CA distributed on salicylic acid (CA/SA) using layered copper hydroxide nanosheets intercalated with salicylic acid as the precursor. The detailed characterizations demonstrated that CA/C exhibits eximious electrostatic sensitivity (1.06 mJ) due to the inherent structural characteristics of CA/C such as the limitation of the free movement of CA by the layered structure and preeminent electrical conductivity of carbon nanosheets. Surprisingly, CA/C with nearly 1.0 mg in the miro-initiating device can reliably detonate Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20). CA/C exhibits extremely high CA content (93%), excellent ignition ability, and detonation ability, and its performance is superior to pure CA and most CA-modified materials reported previously. CA/SA also has an excellent detonation ability and its electrostatic sensitivity is as low as 0.92 mJ. These findings provide a new perspective for the development of high-performance primary explosives for the micro-initiating device.

Abstract
The co-precipitation method is used to fabricate layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanohybrids with surface engineering of graphene oxide (GO) by radially grafting borate-LDH (BLDH) to BLDH@GO nanosheets, aiming at improving the surface characteristics and compatibility of LDH with the polymer matrix. The results prove the successful fabrication of BLDH@GO and LDH@GO nanosheets. The nanosheets are mixed into polypropylene (PP) by melt blending to study the structure and properties of the composites. The PP composites with BLDH@GO and BLDH have both exfoliation structures and aggregation structures, and the two nanosheets show enhanced interfacial interactions with the PP matrix compared with LDH and LDH@GO. The initial decomposition temperatures of the PP composites are lower than those of the neat PP, but the thermal degradation temperatures of the PP composites are higher. Compared with the other samples, BLDH@GO provides a higher nucleation density, reflected in a smaller spherulite size and a higher crystallization temperature confirmed by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results. BLDH@GO shifts the crystallization temperature of PP to higher values (compared to the neat PP) due to the nucleation effect, which is in line with the increase in the nucleation density detected by polarized optical microscopy (POM).

Abstract
This work analyzes the thermal degradation and mechanical properties of iron (Fe)-containing MgAl layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based polypropylene (PP) nanocomposite. Ternary metal (MgFeAl) LDHs were prepared using the urea hydrolysis method, and Fe was used in two different concentrations (5 and 10 mol%). Nanocomposites containing MgFeAl-LDH and PP were prepared using the melt mixing method by a small-scale compounder. Three different loadings of LDHs were used in PP (2.5, 5, and 7.5 wt%). Rheological properties were determined by rheometer, and flammability was studied using the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL94 (V and HB). Color parameters (L*, a*, b*) and opacity of PP nanocomposites were measured with a spectrophotometer. Mechanical properties were analyzed with a universal testing machine (UTM) and Charpy impact test. The thermal behavior of MgFeAl-LDH/PP nanocomposites was studied using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The morphology of LDH/PP nanocomposites was analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A decrease in melt viscosity and increase in burning rate were observed in the case of iron (Fe)-based PP nanocomposites. A decrease in mechanical properties interpreted as increased catalytic degradation was also observed in iron (Fe)-containing PP nanocomposites. Such types of LDH/PP nanocomposites can be useful where faster degradation or faster recycling of polymer nanocomposites is required because of environmental issues.

Abstract
Photocatalysis and electrocatalysis have been essential parts of electrochemical processes for over half a century. Recent progress in the controllable synthesis of 2D nanomaterials has exhibited enhanced catalytic performance compared to bulk materials. This has led to significant interest in the exploitation of 2D nanomaterials for catalysis. There have been a variety of excellent reviews on 2D nanomaterials for catalysis, but related issues of differences and similarities between photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in 2D nanomaterials are still vacant. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview on the differences and similarities of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in the latest 2D nanomaterials. Strategies and traps for performance enhancement of 2D nanocatalysts are highlighted, which point out the differences and similarities of series issues for photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. In addition, 2D nanocatalysts and their catalytic applications are discussed. Finally, opportunities, challenges and development directions for 2D nanocatalysts are described. The intention of this review is to inspire and direct interest in this research realm for the creation of future 2D nanomaterials for photocatalysis and electrocatalysis.

Abstract
Layered double hydroxide (LDHs)-based mixed metal oxides (MMOs) are widely studied as the medium to high temperature (200-400 °C) CO2 capture sorbents. However, most of the studies are carried out using the powdered samples. To upgrade these sorbents for industrial-scale CO2 capture, it is important to move away from the powdered form and develop structured sorbents. Moreover, the CO2 capture properties of these sorbents need to be improved in terms of capture capacity and cycling stability. Here we are utilizing a modified amide hydrolysis method to improve the CO2 capture capacities of LDHs-based MMOs. Subsequently, aqueous exfoliation coupled with the freeze-drying technique was utilized to develop LDHs-based novel MMOs. Exfoliated LDH nano sheets were pelletized (2 mm) to circumvent the challenges associated with powder samples when used in industrial-scale applications. The obtained pellets have an average crushing load of 11.1 N and 4.3 MPa of compressive strength, which indicate their good mechanical stability. The MMOs pellets showed a narrow distribution of pores (8-10 nm) with very good surface area (264 m2/g) and pore volume (1.27 cm3/g). They also had much improved CO2 capture capacities at ambient pressure and both low (2.17 mmol/g, 30 °C) and medium temperature (1.43 mmol/g, 200 °C), as compared to previously reported pristine MMOs powder samples. The pelletized structured sorbents also outperformed commercial LDH-based pellets by several fold.

Abstract
In the present work, polybutylene succinate (PBS)/stearate modified magnesium-aluminium layered double hydroxide (St-Mg-Al LDH) composites were prepared via melt processing and the effect of different loadings of St-Mg-Al LDH on the degradation behaviour of PBS under marine conditions was investigated. The morphological, mechanical and thermal characteristics of the composites were studied using different characterisation techniques. Optical imaging and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the incorporation of St-Mg-Al LDH accelerates the degradation of PBS along with the activity of microorganisms adhered to the composite films. PBS/St-Mg-Al LDH composites are found to have lower thermal degradation temperatures than those of pure PBS. The decrease in thermal stability is correlated with the degradation of PBS due to the catalytic action Mg and Al present in LDH. Tensile and DMA analysis revealed that the addition of St-Mg-Al LDH did not have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of PBS.

Abstract
It proved that the most destructive effects of the toxic Al3+ ion on the human nervous system and disease that are involved with this system, such as Alzheimer's. The development of solid-state electrodes is still in its infancy during the sensor-based detection methods for Al3+. Hence, in this study, a novel flexible ITO/PET-based electrochemical solid-state sensor was designed and constructed. Modification of the surface of electrode bedding was done by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of Mg-Al LDH. nanoplatelets along with alizarin red S (ARS) in an interconnected matrix film. In the molecular design of sensing base of the electrode, the electroactive organic units (ARS molecules) present in the ITO/PET-layered (ARS/LDHs)n matrix are involved in electrochemical reactions when exposed to the target molecule (Al3+ ion), so the electrochemical changes of the new formed Al-chelated system are detectable. This type of sensor is used for sensitive and selective detection of Al3+. The minimum sheet resistance, morphology and high electrocatalytic activity of the modified matrix film are obtained in the fifth cycle of LbL assembly technique. In this electrochemical sensor, both electrochemical and optical methods were detected with high sensitivity and selectivity of Al3+, so that in a cyclic voltammetry electrochemical method, the lower detection limit of 10.1 nM with a linear range of [0.2-120 μM] was obtained compared to the fluorescence-based optical method.

Abstract
Recently, the development of a unique class of layered silicate nanomaterials has attracted considerable interest for treatment of wastewater. Clean water is an essential commodity for healthier life, agriculture and a safe environment at large. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and other clay hybrids are emerging as potential nanostructured adsorbents for water purification. These LDH hybrids are referred to as hydrotalcite-based materials or anionic clays and promising multifunctional two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. They are used in many applications including photocatalysis, energy storage, nanocomposites, adsorption, diffusion and water purification. The adsorption and diffusion capacities of various toxic contaminants heavy metal ions and dyes on different unmodified and modified LDH-samples are discussed comparatively with other types of nanoclays acting as adsorbents. This review focuses on the preparation methods, comparison of adsorption and diffusion capacities of LDH-hybrids and other nanoclay materials for the treatment of various contaminants such as heavy metal ions and dyes.

Abstract
The utilization of layered nanofillers in polymer matrix, as reinforcement, has attracted great interest in the 21st century. This can be attributed to the high aspect ratios of the nanofillers and the attendant substantial improvement in different properties (i.e., increased flammability resistance, improved modulus and impact strength, as well as improved barrier properties) of the resultant nanocomposite when compared to the neat polymer matrix. Amongst the well-known layered nanofillers, layered inorganic materials, in the form of LDHs, have been given the most attention. LDH nanofillers have been employed in different polymers due to their flexibility in chemical composition as well as an adjustable charge density, which permits numerous interactions with the host polymer matrices. One of the most important features of LDHs is their ability to act as flame-retardant materials because of their endothermic decomposition. This review paper gives detailed information on the: preparation methods, morphology, flammability, and barrier properties as well as thermal stability of LDH/polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract
Differently functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) [hydroxyl (OH_BNNSs), amine (NH2_BNNSs), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (PEG_BNNSs)] were synthesized, and their effects on the structure and thermal properties of poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) along with those of the pristine BNNSs were studied. Highly dispersed nanocomposites were prepared using PLLA and 0.5 wt % of pristine/functionalized BNNSs via a solvent blending method. Homogeneous dispersion of BNNSs in the polymer matrix was confirmed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Pristine BNNSs and OH_BNNSs accelerated the crystallization of PLLA as effective nucleating agents and favored the formation of the α form in melt-crystallized samples. On the other hand, NH2_BNNSs and PEG_BNNSs incorporated samples result in the moderate crystallization rate of PLLA and lead to the formation of a mixture of α and α' forms similar to the PLLA. It is also found that thermal stability and thermal conductivity of PLLA nanocomposites significantly depend on the type of functionalization of BNNSs. At 0.5 wt % loading, the thermal conductivity enhancement is maximum for PEG_BNNSs incorporated PLLA (∼62%), and that is only 9% for pristine BNNSs incorporated PLLA. The thermal stability of PLLA nanocomposites was significantly improved by 32-41 °C depending on the type of functionalized BNNSs compared to PLLA. It is proposed that the strong interaction between functionalized BNNSs and PLLA matrix is responsible for the improved thermal management properties.

Abstract
Semi-crystalline poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) has exhibited remarkable potential in various fields. However, the inherent drawbacks of PEN such as slow crystalline rate and low crystallinity limit its further development. To alleviate this problem, the choice of nanofiller as nucleation agent and the interfacial compatibility between nanofiller and PEN matrix are two momentous factors that need to be considered. Accordingly, in this work, functionalized hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN@(PDA+PEI)) was successfully synthesized via polyethylenimine (PEI) assisted bio-inspired surface functionalization, and then homogeneously dispersed in the PEN resin using solution casting method to obtain functional polymer nanocomposite films with strengthening the crystallization behavior, mechanical and dielectric properties. Various testing methods including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and polarizing microscope (POM) were applied to intricately analyze the effect of h-BN@(PDA+PEI) on the crystallization behavior of PEN composites. The testing results certificated that the h-BN@(PDA+PEI) can effectively improve the crystallinity (from 6.56% to 14.90%), and the spherulite size of PEN was reduced while the nucleation density of nanocomposites was raised. Furthermore, the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics demonstrated that 2 wt% h-BN@(PDA+PEI) could significantly reduce the cold crystallization temperature (Tp) and the crystallization activation energy (Ea) (from 359.7 KJ/mol to 292.8 KJ/mol), while it improved the crystallization rate (Kc) of PEN. In addition, the mechanical and dielectric properties of nanocomposite films were also reinforced to further broaden the application of semi-crystalline PEN. Therefore, the h-BN@(PDA+PEI) can function as an effectual nucleating agent and enhance the performance of PEN.

Abstract
Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) generally suffers from low crystallization rate and long molding duration, which as a result limit its application as engineering plastics. To overcome these drawbacks, series of PET/layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposites were prepared by a solution blending process. The effect of metal composition (MgAl and CaAl) and organo-modification (stearic acid intercalated) for LDH fillers on the crystallization behavior of the nanocomposites was investigated. It was revealed that, compared with PET/CaAl-LDH, the PET/MgAl-LDH nanocomposite exhibits a higher crystallization temperature and faster crystallization rate, which is associated with the superior nucleation ability of MgAl-LDH. The nucleation mechanism of PET induced by LDHs was explored by means of Avrami equation and theory of Hoffman-Lauritzen, pointing out that the incorporation of LDHs reduce the free energy of nucleation and the fold surface free energy of PET. In order to improve the compatibility between LDH and PET, stearic acid (SA) intercalated MgAl-LDH was prepared and filled into PET matrix. The resultant PET/MgAl-LDH-SA shows a further enhanced crystallization temperature and accelerated crystallization rate, in comparison with PET/MgAl-LDH nanocomposites. In addition, the thermal stability, gas barrier and mechanical properties of PET/LDH composites were improved upon incorporation of LDH fillers.

Abstract
This research work is based on the comparison of the mixing phenomena of magnesium–aluminum (MgAl) layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated by dodecylbenzene sulfonate (MgAl-DBS) in poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Two mixing techniques were used to compare the dispersion of LDHs in PLA such as sonication-assisted masterbatch (SAM) melt mixing and direct melting (DM) methods. MgAl LDHs synthesized by the urea hydrolysis method and intercalated with DBS anions using anion exchange reaction and were used in different ratios in PLA (1.25, 2.5, and 5 wt%). MgAl LDHs and their anion intercalation were studied by the X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) method. Different properties of LDH/PLA composites were compared to analyze the effect of these mixing techniques. Dispersion and exfoliation of LDHs in PLA were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Influences on the rheological properties were evaluated by analyzing the complex viscosities (η*), storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G′′) by using a rheometer. The thermal properties, thermal stability and effect on crystallinity of composites made with the two mixing techniques were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) respectively. The mixing mechanism and amount of MgAl-DBS LDHs have a notable effect on the properties of PLA composites with sonication-assisted masterbatch melt mixing techniques giving better dispersion of LDHs in PLA composites as compared to direct melt mixing. This research work is based on the comparison of the mixing phenomena of magnesium–aluminum (MgAl) layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated by dodecylbenzene sulfonate (MgAl-DBS) in poly(lactic acid) (PLA).![]()

Abstract
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate⁻co⁻3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a biodegradable polymer and has several potential applications. Herein, we have used a rich biomass resource, rice husk, to obtain rice husk nano-SiO₂ (RHNS) and prepared RHNS/PHBV composites by using hot-press molding. The results showed that the amorphous nature of spherical nano-SiO₂ particles with an average diameter of 40⁻80 nm was obtained. The tensile strength and flexural strength of the RHNS/PHBV-3 composite reached up to 23.515 and 75.669 MPa, respectively, corresponding to an increase of 33.65% and 15.54% as compared to pure PHBV. The enhanced mechanical properties of the RHNS/PHBV composite can be attributed to the uniform dispersion and strong interfacial bonding of RHNS with the PHBV matrix. In addition, the water absorption rate of the RHNS/PHBV composite increased from 0.26% to 0.35% and the water swelling ratio followed the given order in different directions: thickness > width > length. Furthermore, the initial degradation temperature and residual rate of combustion at 700 °C of the composites increased with higher content of RHNS, which represents the enhanced thermal stability of RHNS/PHBV composites. In summary, RHNS served as an excellent reinforcement and RHNS/PHBV composites have shown promising properties for various potential applications.

Abstract
The effect of benzoic acid (BA) surface modified alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) on the mechanical properties and crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) nanocomposites was studied. Characterization of the modified Al2O3 NPs (BA-Al2O3) by FTIR and XRD analyses confirmed that benzoic acid molecules chemisorb on the surface of the NPs, forming benzene groups-rich microstructures. A considerable increase in the tensile strength, flexural modulus, and toughness was observed for the nanocomposites with only 0.2 wt% BA-Al2O3. Enhanced interfacial adhesion with the matrix was achieved, which enabled effective reinforcement of the nanocomposites. The higher crystallization temperature along with shorter crystallization halftime indicated the higher nucleation activity of BA-Al2O3. Furthermore, the interchain conformational ordering of iPP was significantly accelerated in the presence of the BA-Al2O3 NPs. The CH-π interaction between the polymer and BA-Al2O3 NPs was considered to facilitate the attachment of the iPP chains and stimulate conformational ordering, crystallization, as well as mechanical properties of nanocomposites.

Abstract
High-performance heat-retention agents for multifunctional green agricultural films are today largely suitable to increase the production yield as well as to save energy. Here, an adapted ammonia releasing hydrothermal method was used to produce a series of micrometer-sized carbonate-layered double hydroxide (CO3-LDH) precursors of sizes ranging from 1.32 μm to 8.64 μm by simply adjusting the feeding Mg2+ concentration from 0.80 mol L-1 to 0.20 mol L-1. From these pristine LDH materials, μm-sized dihydrogenphosphate-intercalated LDHs (H2PO4-LDHs) were prepared by an anion-exchange method. The structure, the platelet size, and the associated selective IR absorption properties of the H2PO4-LDH and the derivative H2PO4-LDH/EVA composite as well as the related visible transmittance and the photostability of the H2PO4-LDH/EVA film were investigated. The results show that the selective IR absorption in the wavelength range of 7-14 μm enabling the heat retention of the H2PO4-LDHs and H2PO4-LDH/EVA composites depends on the corresponding number-averaged particle size of H2PO4-LDH in the range of 2.01 μm to 8.80 μm. Compared with EVA, the H2PO4-LDH/EVA composites demonstrate a significant improvement of selective IR absorption, while maintaining acceptable visible transmittance, and similar photostability. An optimized particle size of H2PO4-LDH of ca. 5.85 μm leads to 60% selective IR absorption and 64% selective IR absorption when dispersed in EVA, while the polymer free of filler exhibits less than 50% absorption in the 7-14 μm IR domain.

Abstract
In immiscible polymer blend nanocomposites, nanoparticles can be localised either in polymer matrices or at the interface, invoking the simple question of how the spatial distribution of the nanoparticles and the resulting morphological changes affect the non-isothermal crystallisation and degradation kinetics. In this study, the non-isothermal crystallisation of polypropylene in polypropylene (PP)-rich compatibilised and non-compatibilised PP/low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/clay composites and their degradation are investigated. The non-isothermal crystallisation analyses show that the localisation of the clay particles in the blend composites has two opposing effects. First, the poorly dispersed clay particles at the PP/LDPE interface in the non-compatibilised blend composite has no significant effect on the crystallisation temperature of PP but allows the free movement of PP chains, resulting in a higher crystallinity of PP than that of PP in the neat blend. Second, the well-dispersed clay particles in the compatibilised blend composites disrupt the free movement of PP chains, resulting in a lower crystallisation temperature and crystallinity than that of PP in the neat blend. The influences of different selective localisations of clay particles on the activation energies of degradation are studied. The presence of maleated compatibilisers, clay, and the distribution of clay in the blend composite play important roles in determining the activation energies of degradation.

Abstract
Differential scanning calorimeter was used to extensively investigate the non-isothermal crystallization of polypropylene (PP)/layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanocomposites prepared through wet solid-state shear milling. The corresponding crystallization kinetics was further investigated by using Ozawa, modified Avrami and combined Avrami-Ozawa method, respectively. The results showed that the Ozawa method could not well describe the crystallization kinetics of pure PP and its nanocomposites. Comparatively, the modified Avrami method as well as the combined Avrami-Ozawa method gives the satisfactory results. Under the effect of pan-milling, the produced LDH nano intercalated/exfoliated particles exhibit the inhibitive effect on the PP nucleation but more remarkable promotion effect on the spherulite growth, leading to enhancement in the overall crystallization rate. This is reflected in increase of the calculated fold surface free energy σe and also the supercooling degree ΔT required for crystallization nucleation. In addition, the polarized optical microscopy observation also verifies the higher spherulite growth rate of PP/LDHs nanocomposites than that of pure PP.

Abstract
Layered double hydroxide (LDH) platelets with nanosized and microsized level were synthesized and used as fillers in an isotactic polypropylene (PP) matrix. The nucleation and crystallization behavior of PP/LDH composites (denoted as 1-PPLx and 2-PPLx for composites containing nanosized and microsized LDH, respectively; x represents the mass percentage of LDH) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy techniques. It is found that the crystallization temperature of PP/LDH composites is largely enhanced and the half crystallization time is reduced remarkably relative to pure PP, especially for 2-PPLx composite. The 2-PPLx composite exhibits stronger heterogeneous nucleating ability and faster crystallization rate than 1-PPLx samples with the same LDH loading. In addition, the crystallized PP/LDH composites possess significantly enhanced thermal stability, gas barrier, and flame-retardant properties relative to neat PP, which would show a broad application prospect in engineering plastics and packing industry.

Abstract
Sonication-assisted delamination of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) resulted in smaller-sized LDH nanoparticles (∼50-200 nm). Such delaminated Co-Al LDH, Zn-Al LDH, and Co-Zn-Al LDH solutions were used for the preparation of highly dispersed isotactic polypropylene (iPP) nanocomposites. Transmission electron microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction results revealed that the LDH nanoparticles were well dispersed within the iPP matrix. The intention of this study is to understand the influence of the intralayer metal composition of LDH on the various properties of iPP/LDH nanocomposites. The sonicated LDH nanoparticles showed a significant increase in the crystallization rate of iPP; however, not much difference in the crystallization rate of iPP was observed in the presence of different types of LDH. The dynamic mechanical analysis results indicated that the storage modulus of iPP was increased significantly with the addition of LDH. The incorporation of different types of LDH showed no influence on the storage modulus of iPP. But considerable differences were observed in the flame retardancy and thermal stability of iPP with the type of LDH used for the preparation of nanocomposites. The thermal stability (50% weight loss temperature (T 0.5)) of the iPP nanocomposite containing three-metal LDH (Co-Zn-Al LDH) is superior to that of the nanocomposites made of two-metal LDH (Co-Al LDH and Zn-Al LDH). Preliminary studies on the flame-retardant properties of iPP/LDH nanocomposites using microscale combustion calorimetry showed that the peak heat release rate was reduced by 39% in the iPP/Co-Zn-Al LDH nanocomposite containing 6 wt % LDH, which is higher than that of the two-metal LDH containing nanocomposites, iPP/Co-Al LDH (24%) and iPP/Zn-Al LDH (31%). These results demonstrated that the nanocomposites prepared using three-metal LDH showed better thermal and flame-retardant properties compared to the nanocomposites prepared using two-metal LDH. This difference might be due to the better char formation capability of three-metal LDH compared to that of two-metal LDH.
