Abstract
Free energy barriers to biaryl tropoinversion in metal complexes with tropos phosphepine and azepine ligands were determined by temperature-dependent (31)P NMR inversion-transfer experiments and line shape analysis of the temperature-dependent (1)H NMR spectra, respectively. The barrier in the PdCl(2) complex of the azepine ligand was found to be slightly higher than that of the corresponding free ligand. Studies of a tridentate azepine ligand suggested that configurational change takes place without prior decoordination from the metal.

Abstract
Treatment of fac-[Rh(aet) 3] (aet = 2-aminoethanethiolate) with 2,2'-bis(bromomethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl gave a mononuclear rhodium(III) complex with a nine-membered S, S-chelate ring, fac-[Rh(aet)(L)] (2+) ([ 1] (2+), L = 2,2'-bis(2-aminoethylthiomethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl). Complex [ 1] (2+) afforded a pair of atrop diastereomers, Delta SS( S ax)/Lambda RR( R ax)-[ 1] (2+) ([ 1a] (2+)) and Delta SS( R ax)/Lambda RR( S ax)-[ 1] (2+) ([ 1b] (2+)), which involves the axial chirality ( R ax/ S ax) about a biphenyl moiety of L, besides the central chirality (Delta/Lambda) about a Rh (III) ion bound by two asymmetric ( R/ S) thioether donors. The atrop diastereomers ([ 1a] (2+) and [ 1b] (2+)) were successfully separated, isolated, and optically resolved, and the circular dichroism (CD) contribution from the axial chirality was evaluated by CD spectral analyses.

Abstract
The chiral bimetallic oxovanadium complexes have been designed for the enantioselective oxidative coupling of 2-naphthols bearing various substituents at C6 and/or C7. The chirality transferring from the amino acid to the axis of the biphenyl in oxovanadium complexes 2 was found to occur with the use of UV and CD spectra and DFT calculation. The homo-coupling reaction with oxygen as the oxidant was promoted by 5 mol % of an oxovanadium complex derived from L-isoleucine and achiral biphenol to afford binaphthols in nearly quantitative yields with high enantioselectivities of up to 98% ee. An oxovanadium complex derived from L-isoleucine and H8-binaphthol is highly efficient at catalyzing the air-oxidized coupling of 2-naphthols with excellent enantioselectivities of up to 97% ee. 51V NMR study shows that the oxovanadium complexes have two vanadium(V) species. Kinetic studies, the cross-coupling reaction, and HRMS spectral studies on the reaction have been carried out and illustrate that two vanadium(V) species are both involved in catalysis and that the coupling reaction undergoes a radical-radical mechanism in an intramolecular manner. Quantum mechanical calculations rationalize the importance of the cooperative effects of the axial chirality matching S-amino acids on the stereocontrol of the oxidative coupling reaction. The application of the transformation in the preparation of chiral ligands and conjugated polymers confirms the importance of the current process in organic synthesis.

Abstract
The development of heterogeneous chiral catalysts for enantioselective reactions is highly desirable in order to overcome some drawbacks of homogeneous catalysts. Different from the conventional approaches by using various types of supports or biphasic systems for the recovery and reuse of homogeneous catalysts, a conceptually new strategy for heterogenization of homogeneous chiral catalysts, that is, a "self-supporting" approach, has been developed to use homochiral metal-organic coordination polymers generated by the self-assembly of chiral multitopic ligands with metal ions, and thus obviates the use of any support. In this concept article, the success of this "self-supporting" strategy will be exemplified in heterogeneous catalysis of asymmetric carbonyl-ene, sulfoxidation, epoxidation, and asymmetric hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract
The solution structures of a number of trans-RuH(eta(1)-BH(4))[(S)-tolbinap](1,2-diamine) precatalysts [TolBINAP = 2,2'-bis(di-4-tolylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl; 1,2-diamine==(S,S)- or (R,R)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine (DPEN), ethylenediamine (EN), and (S)-1,1-di(4-anisyl)-2-isopropylethylenediamine (DAIPEN)] have been determined using 2D NMR ((1)H--(1)H DQF-COSY, (1)H--(13)C HMQC, (1)H--(31)P HSQC, and (1)H--(15)N HSQC), and a double-pulsed field-gradient spin-echo (DPFGSE) NOE technique. All the octahedral Ru complexes adopt a trans configuration with respect to the BH(4) and hydride ligands. Amine protons of trans-RuH(eta(1)-BH(4))[(S)-tolbinap](1,2-diamine) complexes undergo H/D exchange in (CD(3))(2)CDOD. This inherent high acidity, coupled with the lability and chemical properties of the BH(4) ligand, allows for precatalyst activation without the need for an added base, in contrast to trans-RuCl(2)[(S)-tolbinap](1,2-diamine) precatalysts, which require a strong base for generation of a catalytic species. The H/BH(4) complex in a 2-propanol solution is converted to catalytically active [trans-RuH{(S)-tolbinap}{(S,S)-dpen}(ROH)](+) [(RO)(ROH)(n)](-) (R = (CH(3))(2)CH), a loosely associated ion pair of the discrete (solvated) cationic fragment and anionic species.

Abstract
A new strategy for the heterogenization of chiral titanium complexes was developed by the in situ assembly of bridged multitopic BINOL ligands with [Ti(OiPr)4] without using a support. The assembled heterogeneous catalysts (self-supported) showed excellent enantioselectivity in both the carbonyl-ene reaction of alpha-methylstyrene with ethyl glyoxylate (up to 98 % ee) and the oxidation of sulfides (up to >99 % ee). The catalytic performance of these heterogeneous catalytic systems was comparable or even superior to that attained with their homogeneous counterparts. The spacers between the two BINOL units of the ligands in the assembled catalysts had significant impact on the enantioselectivity of the carbonyl-ene reaction. This demonstrates the importance of the supramolecular structures of the assemblies on their catalytic behavior. In the catalysis of sulfoxidation, the self-supported heterogeneous titanium catalysts were highly stable and could be readily recycled and reused for over one month (at least eight cycles) without significant loss of activity and enantioselectivity (up to >99.9 % ee). The features of these self-supported catalysts, such as facile preparation, robust chiral structure of solid-state catalysts, high density of the catalytically active units in the solids, as well as easy recovery and simple recycling, are particularly important in developing methods for the synthesis of optically active compounds in industrial processes.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Stereoelectronic factors present a barrier to equilibrium between diastereomeric conformations resulting in differences in selectivity as a function of catalyst configuration. The bis(trimethylsilyl)-methyl protective group is inert to insertion but directs carbon-hydrogen insertion with enhanced enantiocontrol.

Abstract
The "chirality content" of Katsuki-Jacobsen epoxidation catalysts are computed with the Avnir continuous chirality measure (CCM). An assessment of Mn(salen) molecules from the Cambridge Structural Database shows there exist some variation in CCM and the chirality content for several triplet state complexes of these catalysts purported in the literature to be the active species show even larger CCM values. Several deformation modes were analyzed to examine how chirality content changes as catalyst distortion is induced. The deformations studied include in-plane deformations, cup-shaped puckering, ligand twisting motions, and step-like deformations. Some distortions lead to increases of chirality while others lead to a decrease in chirality content. The most influential distortion modes that can be used for ligand design are twisting and step induction.

Abstract
The main recent conceptual advances in asymmetric aldol reactions are presented. Methods ranging from stoichiometric chiral auxiliary-mediated to direct, catalytic reactions are covered, including the Mukaiyama aldol reactions which use stoichiometric base and silylating reagents, but catalytic (substoichiometric) amounts of the chiral inductor. The salient features of each new development are noted, paying special attention to practical concerns and to the potential implementation for large scale production. After examination of pros and cons of each strategy, gaps and limitations that deserve further investigation are highlighted.

Abstract
Addition and substitution reactions with carbon nucleophiles are fundamental processes in organic synthesis, and the development of general catalytic asymmetric variants thereof is still a major challenge today. In contrast to enantioselective alkyl transfer reactions, the corresponding arylations have not yet reached a high level of maturity. The existing protocols are either of no general applicability or are limited in terms of selectivity. This article summarizes established routes for catalytic asymmetric aryl transfer together with the latest developments in this area. The scope and limitations of this reaction are discussed.

Abstract
[structure: see text]. A new concept for the discrete preparation of optical antipodes is reported. The approach makes use of a cyclization/cleavage procedure that has been applied to polymer-supported quasi-meso compound 1, containing a polymeric leaving group and a regular leaving group. Two-directional cyclization leads to the formation and separation of quasi-enantiomers 2 and 3 simultaneously, with one being immobilized and one free in solution. Treatment of 2 and 3 with appropriate nucleophiles gives discrete enantiomers 4 and 5.
