Recent Advances of Chiral Isolated and Small Organic Molecules: Structure and Properties for Circularly Polarized Luminescence

This paper explores recent advancements in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibited by small and isolated organic molecules. The development and application of small CPL molecule are systematically reviewed through eight different chiral skeleton sections. Investigating the intricate interplay between molecular structure and CPL properties, the paper aims at providing and enlighting novel strategies for CPL-based applications.

Luminescent Behavior of Zn(II) and Mn(II) Halide Derivatives of 4-Phenyldinaphtho[2,1-d:1',2'-f][1,3,2]dioxaphosphepine 4-Oxide and Single-Crystal X-ray Structure Determination of the Ligand

The two enantiomers of chiral phosphonate 4-phenyldinaphtho[2,1-d:1',2'-f][1,3,2]dioxaphosphepine 4-oxide, O=PPh(BINOL), were synthesized from the proper 1,1'-bi-2-naphtol (BINOL) enantiomer and characterized. The structure of the (S)-enantiomer was elucidated by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The reaction with anhydrous ZnBr2 afforded complexes having the general formula [ZnBr2{O=PPh(BINOL)}2] that showed intense fluorescence centered in the near-UV region rationalized on the basis of TD-DFT calculations. The corresponding Mn(II) complexes with the general formula [MnX2{O=PPh(BINOL)}2] (X = Cl, Br) exhibited dual emission upon excitation with UV light, with the relative intensity of the bands dependent upon the choice of the halide. The highest energy transition is comparable with that of the Zn(II) complex, while the lowest energy emission falls in the red region of the spectrum and is characterized by lifetimes in the hundreds of microseconds range. Although the emission at lower energy can also be achieved by direct excitation of the metal center, the luminescence decay curves suggest that the band in the red range is possibly derived from BINOL-centered excited states populated by intersystem crossing.

Two pairs of chiral YbIII enantiomers presenting distinct NIR luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence performances with giant differences in second-harmonic generation responses

By introducing enantiomerically pure mono-bidentate N-donor ligands (LR/LS) into Yb(btfa)3(H2O)2 and Yb(dbm)3(H2O), respectively, two pairs of chiral YbIII enantiomers, namely Yb(btfa)3LR/Yb(btfa)3LS (D-1/L-1) and [Yb(dbm)3LR]·[Yb(dbm)3(C2H5OH)]/[Yb(dbm)3LS]·[Yb(dbm)3(C2H5OH)] (D-2/L-2) were isolated, where btfa- = 3-benzoyl-1,1,1-trifluoroacetonate, dbm- = dibenzoylmethanate, and LR/LS = (-)/(+)-4,5-pinenepyridyl-2-pyrazine. D-1/L-1 possess mononuclear structures in which the YbIII ions are eight-coordinated, while D-2/L-2 show cocrystal structures containing Yb(dbm)3(LR/LS) and Yb(dbm)3(C2H5OH) moieties in which the two YbIII ions are eight and seven-coordinated, respectively. They not only feature different molecular structures but also present distinct linear and nonlinear optical performances. Chiral mononuclear D-1 has better near infrared photo-luminescence (NIR-PL) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performances than chiral cocrystal D-2. More remarkably, D-1/L-1 show large second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses (up to 1.25/1.28 × KDP) 18/16 times those of D-2/L-2 (0.07/0.08 × KDP). In addition, D-2/L-2 represent the first examples of lanthanide cocrystal complexes with NIR-PL, NIR-CPL and SHG properties.

Time-resolved enantiomer-exchange probed by using the orbital angular momentum of X-ray light

Molecular chirality, a geometric property of utmost importance in biochemistry, is now being investigated in the time-domain. Ultrafast chiral techniques can probe the formation or disappearance of stereogenic centers in molecules. The element-sensitivity of X-rays adds the capability to probe chiral nuclear dynamics locally within the molecular system. However, the implementation of ultrafast techniques for measuring transient chirality remains a challenge because of the intrinsic weakness of chiral-sensitive signals based on circularly polarized light. We propose a novel approach for probing the enantiomeric dynamics by using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of X-ray light, which can directly monitor the real-time chirality of molecules. Our simulations probe the oscillations in excited chiral formamide on different potential energy surfaces and demonstrate that using the X-ray OAM can increase the measured asymmetry ratio. Moreover, combining the OAM and SAM (spin angular momentum) provides stronger dichroic signals than linearly polarized light, and offers a powerful scheme for chiral discrimination.

Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Ion Pairing of κ6 N Complexes with Rare-Earth Elements in the Solid State and in Solution

The rare earth element complexes (Ln=Y, La, Sm, Lu, Ce) of several podant κ6 N-coordinating ligands have been synthetized and thoroughly characterized. The structural properties of the complexes have been investigated by X-ray diffraction in the solid state and by advanced NMR methods in solution. To estimate the donor capabilities of the presented ligands, an experimental comparison study has been conducted by cyclic voltammetry as well as absorption experiments using the cerium complexes and by analyzing 89 Y NMR chemical shifts of the different yttrium complexes. In order to obtain a complete and detailed picture, all experiments were corroborated by state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations. Finally, coordination competition studies have been carried out by means of 1 H and 31 P NMR spectroscopy to investigate the correlation with donor properties and selectivity.

Two Chiral YbIII Enantiomeric Pairs with Distinct Enantiomerically Pure N-Donor Ligands Presenting Significant Differences in Photoluminescence, Circularly Polarized Luminescence, and Second-Harmonic Generation

Using enantiomerically pure bidentate and tridentate N-donor ligands (¹L_R/¹L_S and ²L_R/²L_S) to replace two coordinated H₂O molecules of Yb(tta)₃(H₂O)₂, respectively, two eight- and nine-coordinated Yb^III enantiomeric pairs, namely, Yb(tta)₃¹L_R/Yb(tta)₃¹L_S (Yb-R-1/Yb-S-1) and [Yb(tta)₃²L_R]·CH₃CN/[Yb(tta)₃²L_S]·CH₃CN (Yb-R-2/Yb-S-2), were isolated, in which Htta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone, ¹L_R/¹L_S = (-)/(+)-4,5-pinene-2,2'-bipyridine, and ²L_R/²L_S = (-)/(+)-2,6-bis(4',5'-pinene-2'-pyridyl)pyridine. Interestingly, they not only present distinct degrees of chirality but also show large differences in near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (PL), circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), and second-harmonic generation (SHG). Eight-coordinated Yb-R-1 with an asymmetric bidentate ¹L_R ligand has a high NIR-PL quantum yield (1.26%) and a long decay lifetime (20 μs) at room temperature, being more than two times those (0.48%, 8 μs) of nine-coordinated Yb-R-2 with a C₂-symmetric tridentate ²L_R ligand. In addition, Yb-R-1 displays an efficient CPL with a luminescence dissymmetry factor g_lum = 0.077, being 4 × Yb-R-2 (0.018). In particular, Yb-R-1 presents a strong SHG response (0.8 × KDP), which is 8 × Yb-R-2 (0.1 × KDP). More remarkably, the precursor Yb(tta)₃(H₂O)₂ exhibits a strong third-harmonic generation (THG) response (41 × α-SiO₂), while the introduction of chiral N-donors results in the switching of THG to SHG. Our interesting findings provide new insights into both the functional regulation and switching in multifunctional lanthanide molecular materials.

Praseodymium Metallacrown-Based NMR Probe for Enantioselective Discrimination of Mandelate Anions in Water

Recently, the enhanced interest in water-soluble aminohydroximate Ln(III)-Cu(II) metallacrowns (MC) is largely due to their fascinating structural chemistry, diverse properties and ease of synthesis. We examined the water-soluble praseodymium(III) alaninehydroximate complex Pr(H₂O)₄[15-MC_Cu(II)Alaha-5]·3Cl (1) as a highly effective chiral lanthanide shift reagent for NMR analysis of the biologically relevant (R/S)-mandelate (MA) anions in aqueous media. The R-MA and S-MA enantiomers can be easily discriminated in the presence of small (1.2-6.2 mol %) amounts of MC 1 by the ¹H NMR signals of multiple protons exhibiting an enantiomeric shift difference (ΔΔδ) of 0.06 ppm up to 0.31 ppm. Additionally, a possibility of coordination of MA to the metallacrown was investigated by the ESI-MS technique and a Density Functional Theory modeling of the molecular electrostatic potential and noncovalent interactions.

Multifunctional Helicene-Based Ytterbium Coordination Polymer Displaying Circularly Polarized Luminescence, Slow Magnetic Relaxation and Room Temperature Magneto-Chiral Dichroism

The combination of physical properties sensitive to molecular chirality in a single system allows the observation of fascinating phenomena such as magneto-chiral dichroism (MChD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) having potential applications for optical data readout and display technology. Homochiral monodimensional coordination polymers of Yb^III were designed from a 2,15-bis-ethynyl-hexahelicenic scaffold decorated with two terminal 4-pyridyl units. Thanks to the coordination of the chiral organic chromophore to Yb(hfac)₃ units (hfac^- =1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylaconate), efficient NIR-CPL activity is observed. Moreover, the specific crystal field around the Yb^III induces a strong magnetic anisotropy which leads to a single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour and a remarkable room temperature MChD. The MChD-structural correlation is supported by computational investigations.

A Study on the Luminescent Terbium(III) and Pyridine 2,6 Dicarboxylate Complexes by Experimental and TD-DFT Approaches

Tb³⁺ luminescence is enhanced by complex formation in aqueous phases as its pyridine 2,6 dicarboxylate (dpa^2-) complexes by using experimental spectroscopic techniques and theoretical time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. The fluorimetric titration of Tb³⁺ ion with dpa^2- ion is followed at λ_ext/λ_ems = 310/490 nm and 310/545 nm, the emission intensities of which are graphed against the mol ratios of the ligand to metal ion [moles of dpa^2-/mol of Tb³⁺]. Experimental results denote that the tris complex; [Tb(dpa)₃]^3- is the most stable form at pH > 5.3. Molecular absorption spectra of tris complex shows a batho-chromic shift of 222 nm of dpa^2- band to 232 nm accompanied by the hyper-chromic effect at 272 nm band. The luminescence intensities at 490, 545, 592 and 620 nm are enhanced over 100 times in tris complex. The coordination of complexes calculated by thermodynamic cycles and with supporting the experimental result, the most stable form was found to be nine coordinated tris complex; [Tb(dpa)]^3-. The theoretical TD-DFT calculations perfectly matched the experimental absorption and emission bands of tris-complex. The novelty of this study is to present the first theoretical calculation of the phosphorescence results and energy transfer process for emission path of Tb³⁺ and pda^2- aqua complexes.

A Raman optical activity spectrometer can sensitively detect lanthanide circularly polarized luminescence

Recently, many studies have appeared in which the Raman optical activity (ROA) instrument was found to be convenient for measuring circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Typically, weak lanthanide luminescence including circular polarization could be detected. The new detection scheme is referred to as ROA-CPL spectroscopy. It is particularly useful when also the vibrational (ROA) itself is detectable as the molecule structure can be examined more reliably. In this review, development of this chiroptical approach and its applications in structural studies of biomolecules are summarized.

Recent Development in Coordination Compounds as a Sensor for Cyanide Ions in Biological and Environmental Segments

Rapid detection of toxic ions has taken great attention in the last few decades due to its importance in maintaining a greener environment for human beings. The extreme toxicity of cyanide (CN-) ions is a great environmental concern as its continued industrial use generates interest in facile and sensitive methods for CN- ions detection. Since CN- ions act as a ligand in coordination chemistry which rapidly coordinates with suitable metals and forms complexes, this ability was mainly explored in its detection. It also attacks the central metal in coordination compounds and gives a fluorimetric response. Coordination compounds behave as a sensor for the detection of important ions like CN- ions and have gained great attention due to their facile synthesis, multianalyte detection, clear detection and low detection limit. Recently, considerable efforts have been devoted to the detection and quantification of hazardous multianalyte using a single probe. Cu2+ complexes are the main complexes used for CN- ions detection; however, the complexes of many other metals are also used as sensors. Four basic types of interaction have been discussed in coordination compound sensors for CN- detection. The performances of different sensors are compared with one another and the sensors which have the lowest detection limit are highlighted. This review comprises the progress made by coordination compounds as sensors for the detection of CN- ions in the last six years (2015-2021). To the best of our knowledge, there is no review on coordination compounds as a sensor for CN- ions during this period. [Figure: see text].

First Trifluoromethylated Phenanthrolinediamides: Synthesis, Structure, Stereodynamics and Complexation with Ln(III)

The first examples of 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diamides bearing CF₃-groups on the side amide substituents were synthesized. Due to stereoisomerism and amide rotation, such complexes have complicated behavior in solutions. Using advanced NMR techniques and X-ray analysis, their structures were completely elucidated. The possibility of the formation of complex compounds with lanthanoids nitrates was shown, and the constants of their stability are quantified. The results obtained are explained in terms of quantum-chemical calculations.

Structural Control and Chiroptical Response in Intrinsically Tetra- and Pentanuclear Chiral Gold Clusters

Controlling the synthesis of chiral metal clusters in the aspects of nuclearity number, metal-metal interaction, and spatial arrangement of metal atoms is crucial for establishing the correlation of detailed structural factors with chiroptical activity. Herein, a series of enantiopure gold complexes with nuclearity numbers ranging from 2 to 5 were constructed and structurally characterized. On the basis of the annulation reaction between two aurated μ₂-imido nucleophilic units with various aldehydes, we finely adjusted the metal-metal interaction and torsion angles of a characteristic tetranuclear metal cluster by introducing different substituents into the resulting imidazolidine dianionic chiral skeleton. Further structural investigations, contrast experiments, and time-dependent density functional theory calculations confirmed that the chiroptical response of the acquired asymmetric metal clusters was mainly affected by the geometrically twisted arrangement of metal atoms. Finally, the tetranuclear gold cluster compound with the shortest intermetallic interaction and the largest torsion angle of a Au₄ core showed the highest absorption anisotropy factor up to 2.2 × 10^-3. In addition, the correlation of structural factors with the stability of chiral gold clusters was thoroughly evaluated by monitoring the CD, UV-vis, and NMR spectra at elevated temperatures. Insight into the relationship between the structural factors with the chiroptical property and stability of chiral gold clusters in this work will help us to design and achieve more stable chiral metal clusters and stimulate their practical applications in chiroptical functional materials.

Coordination-Directed Self-Assembly of Functional Polynuclear Lanthanide Supramolecular Architectures

Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln^III). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Late Lanthanide Macrocyclic Tetra-NHC Complexes

An isostructural set of macrocyclic tetra-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes were synthesized on late lanthanides including Lu, Yb, Ho, Dy, and Gd. They were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, electrochemistry, and SQUID magnetometry. Solid-state structures show that all complexes are in a highly distorted square-pyramidal geometry with an axial HMDS ligand. ¹H NMR for Lu, Yb, and Dy demonstrates that these geometries are maintained in solution. Electrochemical measurements on the Yb complex show that the NHCs are very strong σ-donors compared to other organometallic Yb complexes. Magnetic measurements of the Yb and Dy complexes reveal slow relaxation of the magnetization in both complexes. The highly anisotropic Dy complex possesses an energy barrier to spin reversal of 52.42 K/36.43 cm^-1 and waist-restricted hysteresis up to 2.8 K. Finally, an 18-atom macrocycle variant of the Lu complex was synthesized for comparison in reactivity and stability. These complexes are the first lanthanides prepared with macrocyclic NHCs and suggest that NHCs may be a promising ligand for developing single-molecule magnets.

2-Imino-2,3-dihydrobenzoxazole-a useful platform for designing rare- and alkaline earth complexes with variable di- and trianionic O,N,N, ligands

The reactions of 2-imino-2,3-dihydrobenzoxazole LH with M[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂(THF)₂ (M = Yb and Ca) and Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(THF)₂ proceed with the opening of the dihydrobenzoxazole ring and the elimination of HN(SiMe₃)₂ or SiMe₄. Besides, in the case of Yb[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂(THF)₂, an electron transfer from Yb(II) to L takes place and Yb(III) complex 1 is coordinated by a dianionic phenolate ligand containing a pendant radical-anionic diazabutadiene fragment form. When LH is reacted with Ca[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂(THF)₂, C-H bond activation of a methyl fragment by imino nitrogen occurs and affords a dimeric calcium complex 2. In 2, the phenolate ligand is dianionic due to the presence of the amido-imino fragment [R-NC(CH₃)-C(CH₂)-NR']^- (R = 2,4-tBu₂-C₆H₂O; R' = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃). In situ generated ate-complex {Na(Et₂O)_n}{Ca[N(SiMe₃)₂]₃} also enables C-H bond activation, however the dianionic phenolate ligand in the resulting complex 3 contains an amido-imino fragment [R-N-C(CH₂)-C(CH₃)NR']^- featuring the sequence of N-C and NC bonds opposite to that in 2. The reaction of Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(THF)₂ with LH affords mono(alkyl) yttrium complex 4. 4 contains a dianionic amido-imino phenolate ligand resulting from the migration of one alkyl group to the CN bond [R-N-C(Me)(CH₂SiMe₃)-C(Me)NR']. 4 undergoes slow intramolecular C-H bond activation of the residual CH₃ group to afford a yttrium complex coordinated by a trianionic diamido-phenolate ligand [R-N-C(Me)(CH₂SiMe₃)-C(CH₂)NR'].

Cyclodextrins with Multiple Pyrenyl Groups: An Approach to Organic Molecules Exhibiting Bright Excimer Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted much attention because of its potential for electronic and biological applications. Herein, we report a simple and effective approach to organic molecules exhibiting bright CPL by combining a chiral cyclic molecular scaffold and multiple excimer-enabling moieties. An a-cyclodextrin ( CyD ) scaffold was modified with six pyrenyl groups to obtain pyrene-cyclodextrins ( PCD s) in a one-step synthesis from commercially available compounds. The PCDs exhibited high molar extinction coefficients (ε ~ 10 5 M -1 cm -1 ), polarized emission with a good dissymmetry factor (| g lum | ~ 10 -2 ), and quantum yield ( Φ f ~ 0.5). Owing to the excellent photophysical properties of the PCDs, the circularly polarized luminescence brightness ( B CPL ) reached 340 M -1 cm -1 . Comprehensive photophysical and chiroptical studies of the PCD s with only five pyrene units and with linkers of various lengths connecting the CyD with the pyrene units revealed that the formation of a pyrene excimer in a spatially crowded environment is crucial for CPL anisotropy. This study paves the way for the development of bright CPL organic molecules.

Lewis Acid-Catalyzed Carbofunctionalization of Uncommon C,N-Diacyliminium Ions: Controlling Regio- and Enantioselectivity

The tricyclic azepino[1,2-a]indole acetates 7, readily accessible by visible-light-driven catalytic photooxygenation of cyclohepta[b]indoles 1, are convenient precursors to novel and uncommon cyclic C,N-diacyliminium ions 3. We report here the first Lewis acid-catalyzed C-C bond forming reactions of these species with TMSCN and silyl enol ethers as nucleophiles and utilizing TIPSOTf as well as Sc(OTf)₃ as catalysts. Employing Sc(OTf)₃/pybox complexes as a chiral catalyst system, regio- and enantioselective asymmetric alkylations with silyl enol ethers were achieved.

The Underexplored Field of Lanthanide Complexes with Helicene Ligands: Towards Chiral Lanthanide Single Molecule Magnets

The effective combination of chirality and magnetism in a single crystalline material can lead to fascinating cross-effects, such as magneto-chiral dichroism. Among a large variety of chiral ligands utilized in the design and synthesis of chiral magnetic materials, helicenes seem to be the most appealing ones, due to the exceptionally high specific rotation values that reach thousands of deg·cm3·g−1·dm−1, which is two orders of magnitude higher than for compounds with chiral carbon atoms. Despite the sizeable family of transition metal complexes with helicene-type ligands, there are only a few examples of such complexes with lanthanide ions. In this mini-review, we describe the most recent developments in the field of lanthanide-based complexes with helicene-type ligands and summarize insights regarding the further exploration of this family of compounds towards multifunctional chiral lanthanide single molecule magnets (Ln-SMMs).

Soft synthesis and characterization of goethite-based nanocomposites as promising cyclooctene oxidation catalysts

Goethite based nanocomposites with a different composition such as 6FeO(OH)·MnO(OH)·0.5H₂O (Mn-composite), xFeO(OH)·M(OH)₂·yH₂O (Co-composite (M: Co, x = 12, y = 3), Ni-composite (M: Ni, x = 7, y = 2)) and xFeO(OH)·MO·yH₂O (Cu-composite (M: Cu, x = 5.5, y = 3), Zn-composite (M: Zn, x = 6, y = 1.5)) have been prepared by a soft chemical synthesis consisting in acetate hydrolysis. The data provided by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Mössbauer spectra account for a slight modification of all composites' physicochemical properties compared to the starting material. Powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations revealed the secondary phase nature and presence along with that of goethite. The TEM data are also consistent with a nano rod-like morphology with a 5–10 nm width and an average length of 40 nm. The catalytic oxidation of cyclooctene with O₂ using isobutyraldehyde as reductant and acetonitrile as a solvent was performed in batch conditions for 5 h at room temperature. The selectivity for the epoxide was higher than 99% for all tested solids. The conversion of cyclooctene decreased from 55% to 4% following the same order of variance as the base/acid sites ratio: Mn-composite > Fe-composite > Co-composite > Ni-composite > Zn-composite > Cu-composite. The 6FeO(OH)·MnO(OH)·0.5H₂O (Mn-composite) exhibited the most promising catalytic activity in cyclooctene oxidation, which can be correlated with the redox ability of Mn(iii) combined with the increased base character of this solid. The catalytic activity of this sample decreases by 10% after several successive reaction cycles.

Goethite based nanocomposites with different compositions (6FeO(OH)·MnO(OH)·0.5H₂O, xFeO(OH)·M(OH)₂·yH₂O or xFeO(OH)·MO·yH₂O where M = Co, Ni, Cu or Zn) have been prepared by a soft chemical synthesis via acetate hydrolysis.

Bis(4-benzhydryl-benzoxazol-2-yl)methane - from a Bulky NacNac Alternative to a Trianion in Alkali Metal Complexes

A novel sterically demanding bis(4-benzhydryl-benzoxazol-2-yl)methane ligand 6 (4-BzhH2 BoxCH2 ) was gained in a straightforward six-step synthesis. Starting from this ligand monomeric [M(4-BzhH2 BoxCH)] (M=Na (7), K (81 )) and dimeric [{M(4-BzhH2 BoxCH)}2 ] (M=K (82 ), Rb (9), Cs (10)) alkali metal complexes were synthesised by deprotonation. Abstraction of the potassium ion of 8 by reaction with 18-crown-6 resulted in the solvent separated ion pair [{(THF)2 K@(18-crown-6)}{bis(4-benzhydryl-benzoxazol-2-yl)methanide}] (11), including the energetically favoured monoanionic (E,E)-(4-BzhH2 BoxCH) ligand. Further reaction of 4-BzhH2 BoxCH2 with three equivalents KH and two equivalents 18-crown-6 yielded polymeric [{(THF)2 K@(18-crown-6)}{K@(18-crown-6)K(4-Bzh BoxCH)}]n (n→∞) (12) containing a trianionic ligand. The neutral ligand and herein reported alkali complexes were characterised by single X-ray analyses identifying the latter as a promising precursor for low-valent main group complexes.

Deep Learning Insights into Lanthanides Complexation Chemistry

Modern structure-property models are widely used in chemistry; however, in many cases, they are still a kind of a "black box" where there is no clear path from molecule structure to target property. Here we present an example of deep learning usage not only to build a model but also to determine key structural fragments of ligands influencing metal complexation. We have a series of chemically similar lanthanide ions, and we have collected data on complexes' stability, built models, predicting stability constants and decoded the models to obtain key fragments responsible for complexation efficiency. The results are in good correlation with the experimental ones, as well as modern theories of complexation. It was shown that the main influence on the constants had a mutual location of the binding centers.

Diastereoselective self-assembly of a triple-stranded europium helicate with light modulated chiroptical properties

Chiroptical photoswitches are of increasing interest for their potential in advanced information technologies. Herein, an achiral bis-β-diketonate ligand (o-L) with a photoresponsive diarylethene moiety as a linker was designed, which co-assembled with Eu³⁺ ions and R- and S-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-1,10-binaphthyl (R/S-BINAPO) as chiral ancillaries to form dinuclear triple-stranded helicates, [Eu₂(o-L)₃(R/S-BINAPO)₂]. The helicates in the enantiopure form were confirmed by ¹H, ¹⁹F, ³¹P NMR and DOSY NMR analyses. Furthermore, the mirror-image CD and CPL spectra also demonstrate the existence of stable ground- and excited-state chiralities in solution. When exposed to alternate ultraviolet and visible light, the helicates showed reversible color variations from colorless to purple, followed by the presence of light-triggered quadruple optical and chiroptical outputs, named CD, PL, CPL and g_lum switches. With these light-modulated optical outputs, the possibility for the fabrication of IMPLICATION and INHIBIT logic gates was discussed.

Polarization-Sensitive Halide Perovskites for Polarized Luminescence and Detection: Recent Advances and Perspectives

While halide perovskites (HPs) have achieved enormous success in the field of optoelectronic applications, much attention has been recently drawn to the unique polarization sensitivity of HPs, either intrinsic or extrinsic, which makes HPs a potential candidate for innovative applications in directly polarized luminescence and detection. Herein, the research status in the field of polarization-sensitive HPs, including linear polarization and circular polarization, is comprehensively summarized. To evaluate the effectiveness of HPs in generating and detecting linearly or circularly polarized light, the principles and characterization methods of polarized luminescence and detection are introduced. Sequentially, the state-of-the-art development of the strategies that induce the linear or circular polarization characteristics of HPs is systematically reviewed, based on which the application of polarization-sensitive HPs in the field of polarization luminescence and detection are summarized. Moreover, the current challenges and opportunities are discussed, and prospects of the future development in this promising field are outlined.

Dinuclear helicate or mononuclear pincer lanthanide complexes from one ligand: stereo-controlled assembly and catalysis

By varying the metal/ligand ratio, either dinuclear triple helicate or mononuclear pincer can be stereo-selectively obtained from the same chiral ligand. Their catalytic properties have been demonstrated with the asymmetric FC alkylation reactions.

Effect of the aromatic substituent on the para-position of pyridine-bis(oxazoline) sensitizers on the emission efficiency of their EuIII and TbIII complexes

Two efficient lanthanide ion sensitizers 2,6-bis(oxazoline)-4-phenyl-pyridine (PyboxPh, 1) and 2,6-bis(oxazoline)-4-thiophen-2-yl-pyridine (Pybox2Th, 2) were synthesized. 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with cell parameters a = 16.3794(4) Å, b = 7.2856(2) Å, c = 11.7073(3) Å, β = 97.229(1)° and V = 1385.97(6) Å3. 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with cell parameters a = 5.9472(2), b = 16.0747(6), c = 14.3716(5) Å, β = 93.503(1)° and V = 1371.35(8) Å3. Photophysical characterization of 1 shows that its triplet state energy is located at 22 250 cm-1 and efficient energy transfer is observed for EuIII and TbIII. Solutions of [Ln(PyboxPh)3]3+ in dichloromethane display an emission efficiency of 37.2% for Ln[double bond, length as m-dash]Eu and 24.0% for Ln[double bond, length as m-dash]Tb. The excited state lifetimes for EuIII and TbIII are 2.227 ms and 723 μs, respectively. The triplet state energy of 2 is located at 19 280 cm-1 and is therefore too low to efficiently sensitize TbIII emission. However, the sensitization of EuIII is effective, with an emission quantum yield of 14.5% and an excited state lifetime of 714 μs. This shows that the derivatization of the chelator is strongly influenced by the aromatic substituents on the para-position of the pyridine ring. New isostructural 1 : 1 complexes of PyboxPh with EuIII (3) and TbIII (4) were also isolated and crystallize in the triclinic space group P1[combining macron] with cell parameters a = 9.1845(2) Å, b = 10.3327(2) Å, c = 11.9654(2) Å, α = 98.419(1)°, β = 108.109(1)°, γ = 91.791(1)°, V = 1064.08(4) Å3 and a = 7.8052(1) Å, b = 11.8910(1) Å, c = 14.2668(2) Å, α = 72.557(1)°, β = 86.355(1)°, γ = 77.223(1)°, V = 1231.95(3) Å3, respectively.

Beyond Chiral Organic (p-Block) Chromophores for Circularly Polarized Luminescence: The Success of d-Block and f-Block Chiral Complexes

Chiral molecules are essential for the development of advanced technological applications in spintronic and photonic. The best systems should produce large circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) as estimated by their dissymmetry factor (g _lum), which can reach the maximum values of -2 ≤ g _lum ≤ 2 when either pure right- or left-handed polarized light is emitted after standard excitation. For matching this requirement, theoretical considerations indicate that optical transitions with large magnetic and weak electric transition dipole moments represent the holy grail of CPL. Because of their detrimental strong and allowed electric dipole transitions, popular chiral emissive organic molecules display generally moderate dissymmetry factors (10^-5 ≤ g _lum ≤ 10^-3). However, recent efforts in this field show that g _lum can be significantly enhanced when the chiral organic activators are part of chiral supramolecular assemblies or of liquid crystalline materials. At the other extreme, chiral Eu^III- and Sm^III-based complexes, which possess intra-shell parity-forbidden electric but allowed magnetic dipole transitions, have yielded the largest dissymmetry factor reported so far with g _lum ~ 1.38. Consequently, 4f-based metal complexes with strong CPL are currently the best candidates for potential technological applications. They however suffer from the need for highly pure samples and from considerable production costs. In this context, chiral earth-abundant and cheap d-block metal complexes benefit from a renewed interest according that their CPL signal can be optimized despite the larger covalency displayed by d-block cations compared with 4f-block analogs. This essay thus aims at providing a minimum overview of the theoretical aspects rationalizing circularly polarized luminescence and their exploitation for the design of chiral emissive metal complexes with strong CPL. Beyond the corroboration that f-f transitions are ideal candidates for generating large dissymmetry factors, a special attention is focused on the recent attempts to use chiral Cr^III-based complexes that reach values of g _lum up to 0.2. This could pave the way for replacing high-cost rare earths with cheap transition metals for CPL applications.

Optically Active Helical Lanthanide Complexes: Storable Chiral Lewis Acidic Catalysts for Enantioselective Diels-Alder Reaction of Siloxydienes

Lanthanide triflates and a series of hexadentate chiral ligand complexes were synthesized. X-ray-quality crystals were obtained from mixtures of the lanthanide complexes, which were helical in shape. The complexes showed Lewis acidity and catalyzed the enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction of electron-rich siloxydienes. The complexes were stable enough to be stored at ambient temperature on a laboratory bench and retained their Lewis acidity even after a month.

Effect of magnetic anisotropy on direct chiral discrimination in paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy
