Abstract
The employment of readily available photocatalysts and green oxygen atom sources is recognized as a promising strategy to develop sustainable catalysis for oxidation reactions. We herein reported a sacrificial reagent-free system consisting of riboflavin tetraacetate (RFT), an ester of natural vitamin B2 as the photocatalyst, and Sc(OTf)3 and NaCl as the cocatalysts for alkyne oxidation under blue light or even sunlight irradiation to produce 1,2-diketone in which the oxygen atoms were from both water and molecular oxygen, respectively. A major Cl-/Cl• cycle was proposed to be involved and achieved by the excited [RFT-2Sc3+]* complex via single electron transfer for the first time, distinguished from the OCl- active species by a two-electron process in previous flavin-halide photo-oxidation systems.

Abstract
Nitroalkane oxidases (NAOs) are flavoenzymes that catalyse the oxidation of nitroalkanes to their corresponding carbonyl compounds while producing nitrite anions. Herein, we present an artificial catalytic system using flavins or ethylene-bridged flavinium salts that works via an NAO-like process. Under conditions optimised in terms of solvent, base, temperature and oxygen pressure, primary nitroalkanes were transformed to aldehydes. In our system, aldehydes immediately reacted with other nitroalkane molecules to form β-nitroalcohols. The reduced flavin catalyst was re-oxidised by oxygen. An alternative mechanism towards β-nitroalcohols via 5-(2-nitrobutyl)-1,5-dihydroflavin was suggested through quantum chemical calculations and by trapping and characterising this dihydroflavin intermediate. Interestingly, 5-(2-nitrobutyl)-1,5-dihydroflavin is an analogue of the flavin adenine dinucleotide adduct previously observed in an NAO X-ray structure. In both mechanistic pathways, flavin-5-iminium species is formed by nitroalkanide addition to flavin. This process represents flavin-based umpolung of an original donor to an acceptor.

Abstract
Multistimuli-responsive chromism was observed for vinylene-linked bisflavin 1 a with an extended π-conjugated platform. The yellow emission of a dilute solution of 1 a in CHCl3 (0.2 mM) observed at 298 K under UV excitation was changed to orange or red emission upon (1) an increase of concentration, (2) a decrease of temperature, and (3) variation of the solvent. This is in contrast to the almost non stimuli-responsive chromism of the N-methylated bisflavin analogue 1 b and monoflavin 2 a. Mechanistic investigation by 1 H NMR analysis under various conditions revealed that the extended π-conjugation platform and imide moiety of 1 a generate controllability in the formation of lower- and higher-ordered aggregates, which induce variation of the emission color upon change. Bisflavin 1 a also exhibited redox-induced chromism, where the orange emission of 1 a was quenched by the addition of hydrazine under anaerobic conditions, and changed back to the original emission upon subsequent bubbling of O2 gas.

Abstract
We report here that polysubstituted cyclopent-2-enols can be constructed by the one-pot reaction of doubly activated cyclopropanes and α-EWG substituted acetonitriles under mild basic conditions via a domino-ring-opening-cyclization/deacylation/oxidation sequence. Moreover, the synthetic applications of these cyclopent-2-enols have been demonstrated in the late-stage derivatization into functionalized cyclopentapyrimidin-4-ones and 2-hydroxy cyclopentanones with good yields.

Abstract
Flavoenzymes catalyze oxidations via hydroperoxide intermediates that result from activation of molecular O2. These reactions—such as hydroxylation and halogenation—depend on the additional catalytic activity of functional groups in the peptide environment of the flavin cofactor. We report synthetic flavin catalysts that contain C6 amino modifications at the isoalloxazine core and are consequently capable of mediating halogenations outside the peptide surrounding. The catalysts are competent in the selective, biomimetic bromination of oxidation‐prone phenols, flavones, and flavanones using a halide salt in combination with 2,6‐lutidinium oxalate as a flavin reductant under visible‐light irradiation. Our studies show the beneficial effect of stacked bisflavins as well as the catalytic activity of the flavin modifications. The designed flavin catalysts outperform isolated natural (−)‐riboflavin and contribute to the continuing search for tailored flavins in oxidation reactions.

Abstract
Inspired by the photochemical mechanism of a plant blue-light receptor, a unique flavin-based photocatalytic system was developed for the chemoselective heterocoupling of two different thiols, which enabled the facile synthesis of unsymmetrical disulfides. Owing to the redox- and photo-organocatalysis of flavin, the coupling reaction took place under mild metal-free conditions and visible light irradiation with the use of air, which is recognized as the ideal green oxidant.

Abstract
Herein, the geometry, electronic structure, Fe-ligand bonding nature and simulated IR spectrum of α-Keggin, lacunary Keggin, iron(ii/iii)-substituted and the important oxidized high-valent iron derivatives of Keggin type polyoxometalates have been studied using the density functional theory (DFT/OPTX-PBE) method and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The effects of different Fe oxidation states (ii-vi) and H2O/OH-/O2- ligand interactions have been addressed concerning their geometry and electronic structures. It has been revealed that the d-atomic orbitals of Fe and 2p orbitals of polyoxometalate's oxygen-atoms contribute in ligand binding. Compared with other high valent species, the considered polyoxometalate system of [PW11O39(FeVO)]4-, possesses a high reactivity for oxygen transfer.

Abstract
Biomimetic flavin organocatalysts oxidize nitromethane to formaldehyde and NOx-providing a relatively nontoxic, noncaustic, and inexpensive source for catalytic NO2 for aerobic TEMPO oxidations of alcohols, diols, and ethers. Alcohols were oxidized to aldehydes or ketones, cyclic ethers to esters, and terminal diols to lactones. In situ trapping of NOx and formaldehyde suggest an oxidative Nef process reminiscent of flavoprotein nitroalkane oxidase reactivity, which is achieved by relatively stable 1,10-bridged flavins. The metal-free flavin/NOx/TEMPO catalytic cycles are uniquely compatible, especially compared to other Nef and NOx-generating processes, and reveal selectivity over flavin-catalyzed sulfoxide formation. Aliphatic ethers were oxidized by this method, as demonstrated by the conversion of (-)-ambroxide to (+)-sclareolide.

Abstract
A straightforward strategy for the synthesis of unprecedented α-aminoperoxides bearing primary and secondary alkylperoxide substituents is described. Commercially available dialkylzinc reagents are oxidized with molecular oxygen and the consequent peroxide species react with stable (hetero)aromatic and aliphatic α-amido sulfones in excellent yields (>90%). The now available α-aminoperoxides are of potential interest in medicinal chemistry, specifically for the synthesis of antimalarial compounds. Moreover, modification of the reaction conditions selectively leads to N,O-acetals in good yields.

Deazaflavin reductive photocatalysis involves excited semiquinone radicals. Nat Commun 2020; 11:3174. Abstract
Flavin-mediated photocatalytic oxidations are established in synthetic chemistry. In contrast, their use in reductive chemistry is rare. Deazaflavins with a much lower reduction potential are even better suited for reductive chemistry rendering also deazaflavin semiquinones as strong reductants. However, no direct evidence exists for the involvement of these radical species in reductive processes. Here, we synthesise deazaflavins with different substituents at C5 and demonstrate their photocatalytic activity in the dehalogenation of p-halogenanisoles with best performance under basic conditions. Mechanistic investigations reveal a consecutive photo-induced electron transfer via the semiquinone form of the deazaflavin as part of a triplet-correlated radical pair after electron transfer from a sacrificial electron donor to the triplet state. A second electron transfer from the excited semiquinone to p-halogenanisoles triggers the final product formation. This study provides first evidence that the reductive power of excited deazaflavin semiquinones can be used in photocatalytic reductive chemistry. Flavins and deazaflavins are well suited for photoredox processes but their application in photoreductions is challenging. Here, the authors provide direct evidence of the high reductive power of excited deazaflavin semiquinones and their application in catalytic photodehalogenations.

Abstract
Flavins are a diverse set of compounds with a wide variety of biological and nonbiological applications. Applications of flavins receiving attention recently consist of electro- and photocatalytic oxidation of substrates for organic synthesis, bioengineered nanotechnology, and water splitting catalysts, among others. While there is vast knowledge regarding the structure-property relationships of flavins and their electrochemistry, there is much less work elucidating the structure property relationships as they pertain to flavinium photochemistry. Herein, we report the effect of molecular tailoring on the molecular properties of N(5)-ethyl-flavinium cation (Et-Fl+), a derivative of the biocatalytic coenzyme riboflavin, by incorporating electron withdrawing and donating groups at the C7 and C8 position of the isoalloxazine ring. The presence of electron withdrawing groups at the C8 position caused a red shift in the absorption spectrum, while the electron donating groups caused a blue shift. Functionalization at the C7 position had the opposite effect on the absorption spectrum. The effects of single substitution were relatively negated with simultaneous functionalization at both the C8 and C7 positions. Difference density plots indicate no change in the nature of the S1 excited state, which was confirmed by optimization of the excited state geometries. The results presented in this study indicate that functionalization of the isoalloxazine unit affects the photophysical properties of N(5)-ethyl-flavinium cations.

Abstract
Riboflavin-derived photocatalysts have been extensively studied in the context of alcohol oxidation. However, to date, the scope of this catalytic methodology has been limited to benzyl alcohols. In this work, mechanistic understanding of flavin-catalyzed oxidation reactions, in either the absence or presence of thiourea as a cocatalyst, was obtained. The mechanistic insights enabled development of an electrochemically driven photochemical oxidation of primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols using a pair of flavin and dialkylthiourea catalysts. Electrochemistry makes it possible to avoid using O2 and an oxidant and generating H2 O2 as a byproduct, both of which oxidatively degrade thiourea under the reaction conditions. This modification unlocks a new mechanistic pathway in which the oxidation of unactivated alcohols is achieved by thiyl radical mediated hydrogen-atom abstraction.

Abstract
In the present paper, the mechanisms of N2O reduction by H2 were systemically examined over various polyoxometalate-supported single-atom catalysts (SACs) M1/PTA (M = Fe, Co, Mn, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir, and Pt; PTA = [PW12O40]3-) by means of density functional theory calculations. Among these M1/PTA SACs, Os1/PTA SAC possesses high activity for N2O reduction by H2 with a relatively low rate-determining barrier. The favorable catalytic pathway involves the first and second N2O decomposition over the Os1/PTA SAC and hydrogenation of the key species after the second N2O decomposition. Molecular geometry and electronic structure analyses along the favorable reaction pathway indicate that a strong charge-transfer cooperative effect of metal and support effectively improves the catalytic activity of Os1/PTA SAC. The isolated Os atom not only plays the role of adsorption and activation of the N2O molecule but also works as an electron transfer medium in the whole reaction process. Meanwhile, the PTA support with very high redox stability has also been proven to be capable of transporting the electron to promote the whole reaction. We expect that our computation results can provide ideas for designing new SACs for N2O reduction by using H2 selective catalytic reduction technology.

Abstract
Flavin-based catalysts are photoactive in the visible range which makes them useful in biology and chemistry. Herein, we present electrospray-ionization mass-spectrometry detection of short-lived intermediates in photooxidation of toluene catalysed by flavinium ions (Fl+ ). Previous studies have shown that photoexcited flavins react with aromates by proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) on the microsecond time scale. For Fl+ , PCET leads to FlH.+ with the H-atom bound to the N5 position. We show that the reaction continues by coupling between FlH.+ and hydroperoxy or benzylperoxy radicals at the C4a position of FlH.+ . These results demonstrate that the N5-blocking effect reported for alkylated flavins is also active after PCET in these photocatalytic reactions. Structures of all intermediates were fully characterised by isotopic labelling and by photodissociation spectroscopy. These tools provide a new way to study reaction intermediates in the sub-second time range.

Abstract
Heterogeneous multiple-catalyst assemblies were developed in which the flavinium cation and Na or Li cations were easily immobilized on a chitin-derived anionic polymeric scaffold through noncovalent ionic interactions. The supramolecular flavinium catalysts were successfully employed in the environmentally friendly heterogeneous Baeyer-Villiger oxidation and sulfoxidation by H2 O2 . Owing to the cooperative catalytic effect of flavinium, alkali metal, and sulfated chitin, the supramolecular flavinium assembly showed higher catalytic activity for the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclic ketones than the corresponding homogeneous flavinium catalyst. Because the ionic assembly was stable under the reaction conditions, the catalyst could be readily recovered by simple filtration and reused.

Abstract
We report a system with ethylene-bridged flavinium salt 2b which catalyzes the aerobic oxidation of toluenes and benzyl alcohols with high oxidation potential ( Eox > +2.5 V vs SCE) to give the corresponding benzoic acids under visible light irradiation. This is caused by the high oxidizing power of excited 2b ( E(2b*) = +2.67 V vs SCE) involved in photooxidation and by the accompanying dark organocatalytic oxygenation provided by the in situ formed flavin hydroperoxide 2b-OOH.

Abstract
Thanks to rapid development in the last decades, flavins have been recognized as promising photoactive compounds to design new valuable synthetic methodologies based on photoredox catalysis. The review summarizes general photochemical properties of flavins as well as their early applications in transformations mediated by visible light. Special attention has been paid to the catalyst design for benzylic oxidations as well as to recent flavin applications, for example in E/Z-isomerization, [2+2] cycloaddition, cycloelimination, electrophilic chlorination and sulfide oxidation.

Abstract
A series of flavinium salts, 5-ethylisoalloxazinium, 5-ethylalloxazinium, and 1,10-ethylene-bridged alloxazinium triflates, were prepared from commercially available riboflavin. This study presents a comparison between their optical and redox properties, and their catalytic activity in H2O2 oxidations of sulfide, tertiary amine, and cyclobutanone. Reflecting the difference between the π-conjugated ring structures, the flavinium salts displayed very different redox properties, with reduction potentials in the order of: 5-ethylisoalloxazinium > 5-ethylalloxazinium > 1,10-ethylene-bridged alloxazinium. A comparison of their catalytic activity revealed that 5-ethylisoalloxazinium triflate specifically oxidises sulfide and cyclobutanone, and 5-ethylalloxazinium triflate smoothly oxidises tertiary amine. 1,10-Bridged alloxazinium triflate, which can be readily obtained from riboflavin in large quantities, showed moderate catalytic activity for the H2O2 oxidation of sulfide and cyclobutanone.

Abstract
Simulation of the monooxygenation function of flavoenzyme (Fl-Enz) has been long-studied with N5-modified cationic flavins (FlEt+ ), but never with N5-unmodified neutral flavins (Fl) despite the fact that Fl is genuinely equal to the active center of Fl-Enz. This is because of the greater lability of 4a-hydroperoxy adduct of Fl, FlOOH , compared to those of FlEt+ , FlEtOOH , and Fl-Enz, FlOOH-Enz. In this study, Fl incorporated into a short peptide, flavopeptide (Fl-Pep), was designed by a rational top-down approach using a computational method, which could stabilize the corresponding 4a-hydroperoxy adduct (FlOOH-Pep) through intramolecular hydrogen bonds. We report catalytic chemoselective sulfoxidation as well as Baeyer-Villiger oxidation by means of Fl-Pep under light-shielding and aerobic conditions, which are the first Fl-Enz-mimetic aerobic oxygenation reactions catalyzed by Fl under non-enzymatic conditions.

Abstract
We developed a safe, simple, inexpensive, and environmentally benign method for preparing N(5)-ethylated flavinium organocatalysts without using hazardous reagents or inert conditions as previously required. 5-Ethyl-3-methyllumiflavinium cation was prepared from its reduced form by NaNO2 -free aerobic oxidation, which was subsequently extracted onto commercial cation-exchange resins under NaClO4 -free conditions. The resulting resin-immobilized flavinium salts were found to be effective organocatalysts for aerobic oxidation reactions.
