Supramolecular Assembly Frameworks (SAFs): Shaping the Future of Functional Materials

Supramolecular assembly frameworks (SAFs) represent a new category of porous materials, utilizing non-covalent interactions, setting them apart from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). This category includes but is not restricted to hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks and supramolecular organic frameworks. SAFs stand out for their outstanding porosity, crystallinity, and stability, alongside unique dissolution-recrystallization dynamics that enable significant structural and functional modifications. Crucially, their non-covalent assembly strategies allow for a balanced manipulation of porosity, symmetry, crystallinity, and dimensions, facilitating the creation of advanced crystalline porous materials unattainable through conventional covalent or coordination bond synthesis. Despite their considerable promise in overcoming several limitations inherent to MOFs and COFs, particularly in terms of solution-processability, SAFs have received relatively little attention in recent literature. This Minireview aims to shed light on standout SAFs, exploring their design principles, synthesis strategies, and characterization methods. It emphasizes their distinctive features and the broad spectrum of potential applications across various domains, aiming to catalyze further development and practical application within the scientific community.

Solvent Free Potassium 3,5-dinitro-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrazin-2-olate 3D EMOF as Thermally Stable Energetic Material

Heat-resistant explosives play a vital role in indispensable applications. For this, we have synthesized a novel, three-dimensional, solvent-free energetic metal-organic framework (EMOF) potassium 3,5-dinitro-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrazin-2-olate (KDNODP) straightforwardly. The synthesized EMOF was characterized through IR, NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry studies. Furthermore, single-crystal X-ray diffraction provided a complete description of KDNODP. It exhibits a three-dimensional EMOF structure with remarkably balanced properties such as high density (2.11 g cm-3), excellent thermal stability (291 °C), good detonation performance (8127 m s-1 and 26.94 GPa) and low mechanical sensitivity (IS=35 J; FS=360 N) than the commonly used heat-resistant explosives HNS (density=1.74 g cm-3; VOD=7164 m s-1, DP=21.65 GPa, IS=5 J) as well as the similar reported energetic potassium MOFs. To gain insights into the packing and intermolecular interactions, the Hirshfeld surface and a 2D fingerprint analysis were examined. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the particle size and morphological characteristics of KDNODP. These outcomes highlight a successful method for creating 3D EMOF based on a six-membered heterocycle as a potential heat-resistant energetic material.

URJC-1: Stable and Efficient Catalyst for O-Arylation Cross-Coupling

The design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) allows the definition of properties for their final application in small-scale heterogeneous catalysis. Incorporating various catalytic centers within a single structure can produce a synergistic effect, which is particularly intriguing for cross-coupling reactions. The URJC-1 material exhibits catalytic duality: the metal centers act as Lewis acid centers, while the nitrogen atoms of the organic ligand must behave as basic centers. The impact of reaction temperature, catalyst concentration, and basic agent concentration was evaluated. Several copper-based catalysts, including homogeneous and heterogeneous MOF catalysts with and without the presence of nitrogen atoms in the organic ligand, were assessed for their catalytic effect under optimal conditions. Among the catalysts tested, URJC-1 exhibited the highest catalytic activity, achieving complete conversion of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde with only 3% mol copper concentration in one hour. Furthermore, URJC-1 maintained its crystalline structure even after five reaction cycles, demonstrating remarkable stability in the reaction medium. The study also examined the impact of various substituents of the substrate alcohol on the reaction using URJC-1. The results showed that the reaction had high activity when activating substituents were present and for most cyclic alcohols rather than linear ones.

Metalated covalent organic frameworks as efficient catalysts for multicomponent tandem reactions

Multicomponent tandem reactions have become indispensable synthetic methods due to their economic advantages and efficient usage in natural products and drug synthesis. The emergence of metalated covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) has opened up new opportunities for the advancement of multicomponent tandem reactions. In contrast to commonly used homogeneous transition metal catalysts, MCOFs possess regular porosity, high crystallinity, and rich metal chelation sites that facilitate the uniform distribution and anchoring of metals within their cavities. Thus, they show extremely high activity and have recently been widely employed as catalysts for multicomponent tandem reactions. It is timely to conduct a review of MCOFs in multicomponent tandem reactions, in order to offer guidance and assistance for the synthesis of MCOF catalysts and their application in multicomponent tandem reactions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the design and synthesis of MCOFs, their application and progress in multicomponent tandem reactions, and the primary challenges encountered during their current development with the aim of contributing to the promotion of the field.

Enantioselective liquid-liquid extraction of 2-cyclohexylmandelic acid enantiomers using chiral ionic liquids

Obtaining optically pure compounds in an eco-friendly and cost-efficient manner plays an important role in human health and pharmaceutical industry. Racemic separation using multistage stereoselective liquid-liquid extraction has become one of the most practical and effective approach to access homochiral enantiomers. Currently, chiral ionic liquids (CILs) with structural designability have become a promising chiral additive and enable them as adjustable candidates for racemic separation. Herein, a high-effective stereoselective liquid-liquid extraction process composed of imidazolium cations and amino acid-derived anions as the chiral additive was established for racemic 2-cyclohexylmandelic acid (CHMA) separation. We have systematically investigated the choice of organic solvent, concentration of CIL, extraction temperature, and the pH of aqueous phase. For three-stage stereoselective extraction, the maximum enantiomeric excess (e.e.) for CHMA was reached up to 40.6%. Furthermore, the mechanism of steric effect and stereoselective capacity between the CILs and racemic CHMA was discussed and simulated. We envision that the work will facilitate the development of CILs in multistage liquid-liquid extraction and promote the large-scale production of optically pure enantiomers.

Multifunctional Chiral d10-Metal Coordination Polymers: Tunable Photoluminescence and Efficient Second-Harmonic Generation with Circular Dichroic Response

A series of homochiral coordination polymers (HCPs), [M2(SIAP)2(bpy)2] [M(S)] and [M2(RIAP)2(bpy)2] [M(R)] (M = Zn or Cd, SIAP or RIAP = (S,S)- or (R,R)- 2,2'-(isophthaloylbis(azanediyl))di-propionic acid, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine), is successfully synthesized through solvothermal reactions, self-assembling d10 metal cations, chiral dicarboxylic ligands, and π-conjugated bipyridyl ligands. The HCPs crystallize in the extremely rare triclinic chiral space group, P1, and present 3D framework structures attributed to the strong intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking. Due to the unique crystal structures, the title compounds reveal efficient photoluminescence emission across a broad visible range, with significant brightness and color tuning by varying the excitation wavelength. Moreover, they exhibit efficient phase-matched second-harmonic generation (SHG) with very high laser-induced damage thresholds, essential for high-power nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. Intriguingly, the title compounds exhibit a measurable contrast in the SHG response under right- and left-handed circularly polarized excitation, thereby providing a unique case of SHG circular dichroism from the chiral centers of SIAP2- or RIAP2- ligand packed in the noncentrosymmetric environment. These exceptional attributes position these HCPs as promising candidates for multifunctional materials, with potential applications ranging from NLO devices to tailored luminescent systems with polarization control.

Quest for a Desolvated Structure Unveils Breathing Phenomena in a MOF Leading to Greener Catalysis in a Solventless Setup: Insights from Combined Experimental and Computational Studies

The crystal structure of the metal-organic framework (MOF), {Mn2(1,4-bdc)2(DMF)2}n (1) (1,4-bdcH2, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid; DMF, N,N-dimethylformamide), is known for a long time; however, its desolvated structure, {Mn2(1,4-bdc)2}n (1'), is not yet known. The first-principles-based computational simulation was used to unveil the structure of 1' that shows the expansion in the framework, leading to pore opening after the removal of coordinated DMF molecules. We have used 1' that contains open metal sites (OMSs) in the structure in cyanosilylation and CO2 cycloaddition reactions and recorded complete conversions in a solventless setup. The pore opening in 1' allows the facile diffusion of small aldehyde molecules into the channels, leading to complete conversion. The reactions with larger aldehydes, 2-naphthaldehyde and 9-anthracenecarboxaldehyde, also show 99.9% conversions, which are the highest reported until date in solventless conditions. The in silico simulations illustrate that larger aldehydes interact with Mn(II) OMSs on the surfaces, enabling a closer interaction and facilitating complete conversions. The catalyst shows high recyclability, exhibiting 99.9% conversions in the successive reaction cycles with negligible change in the structure. Our investigations illustrate that the catalyst 1' is economical, efficient, and robust and allows reactions in a solventless greener setup, and therefore the catalysis with 1' can be regarded as "green catalysis".

Self-Supported Chiral Dirhodium Organic Frameworks Enables Efficient Asymmetric Cyclopropanation

The development of heterogeneous chiral dirhodium catalysts for fabricating important bioactive substances and reducing the loss of noble metals has long been of significant interest. However, there still remains formidable synthetic challenges since it requires multiple steps of the synthetic process, and rhodium is easily leached from solid materials during the reaction. Here, we demonstrated a self-supported strategy based on the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction to construct two chiral dirhodium organic frameworks for heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis. The synthetic approach is simple and efficient since it requires only a small number of preparation steps and does not require any catalyst supporting materials. The obtained chiral dirhodium materials can be highly efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for asymmetric cyclopropanation between diazooxindole and alkenes. Importantly, Rh2-MOCP-2 exhibited almost similar catalytic performance compared to homogeneous catalyst Rh2(S-Br-NTTL)4. The afforded catalytic performance (93.9% yield with 80.9% ee) highly surpasses previous heterogeneous dirhodium catalysts reported to date.

Ion Transport in Multi-Nanochannels Regulated by pH and Ion Concentration

Nanochannels are a powerful technique for detecting a wide range of biomolecules without labeling. The ion transport phenomena in nanochannel arrays differ from those in single nanochannels and are caused by interchannel communication. This study uses a fully coupled Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) and Navier-Stokes model to investigate ion transport in nanochannel arrays. Instead of being set at a constant value, the surface charge density used in this study is established by the protonation and deprotonation of the silanol groups that are present on the walls of the silicon-based nanochannels. The surface charge density of the nanochannel walls varies with the number of nanochannels, the channel lateral distance, and the background solution properties, which consequently influence the ionic concentration distribution, flow velocity, and electric field strength. For example, in different numbers of nanochannel systems, the ion concentration in nanochannels is not much different, but it is different in reservoirs, especially near the openings of nanochannels. The number of nanochannels and the distance between nanochannels can also affect the formation of electro-convective vortex zones under certain conditions. These findings can aid in optimizing the nanochannel array design by regulating the number and distance of nanochannels and facilitating the construction of solid-state nanochannel arrays with any desired nanochannel dimensions.

Porous Coordination Polymer MOF-808 as an Effective Catalyst to Enhance Sustainable Chemical Processes

The improvement of sustainable chemical processes plays a pivotal role in safe environmental and societal development, for example, by reducing the use of hazardous substances, preventing chemical waste, and improving the efficiency of chemical reactions to obtain added-value compounds. In this context, the porous coordination polymer MOF-808 (MOF, metal-organic framework) was prepared by a straightforward method in water, at room temperature, and was unequivocally characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. MOF-808 material was applied for the first time as catalysts in ring-opening aminolysis reactions of epoxides. It demonstrated high activity and selectivity for reactions of styrene oxide and cyclohexene oxide with aniline, using a very low amount of an eco-sustainable solvent (0.5 mL of EtOH), at 70 °C. Moreover, MOF-808 demonstrated high stability in the catalytic reaction conditions applied, and a notable reuse capacity of up to 20 consecutive reaction cycles, without significant variation in its catalytic performance. In fact, this Zr-based porous coordination polymer prepared by environment-friendly conditions proved to be a novel efficient heterogeneous catalyst, promoting the ring-opening reaction of epoxides under more sustainable conditions, and using a very low amount of catalyst.

Enhanced ozonation of vanillin catalyzed by highly efficient magnetic MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 catalysts: Synergistic effects and mechanism insights

In this study, we synthesized magnetic MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 composite catalysts using a straightforward method, yielding catalysts that exhibited outstanding performance in catalyzing the ozonation of vanillin. This exceptional catalytic efficiency arose from the synergistic interplay between MnFe2O4 and ZIF-67. Comprehensive characterization via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed that the incorporation of MnFe2O4 promoted the creation of oxygen vacancies, resulting in an increased presence of l adsorbed oxygen (Oads) and the generation of additional ·OH groups on the catalyst surface. Utilizing ZIF-67 as the carrier markedly enhanced the specific surface area of the catalyst, augmenting the exposure of active sites, thus improving the degradation efficiency and reducing the energy consumption. The effects of different experimental parameters (catalyst type, initial vanillin concentration, ozone dosage, initial pH value, and catalyst dosage) were also investigated, and the optimal experimental parameters (300 mg/L1.0-MnFe2O4/ZIF-67, vanillin concentration = 250 mg/L, O3 concentration = 12 mg/min, pH = 7) were obtained. The vanillin removal efficiency of MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 was increased from 74.95% to 99.54% after 30 min of reaction, and the magnetic separation of MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 was easy to be recycled and stable, and the vanillin removal efficiency of MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 was only decreased by about 8.92% after 5 cycles. Additionally, we delved into the synergistic effects and catalytic mechanism of the catalysts through kinetic fitting, reactive oxygen quenching experiments, and electron transfer analysis. This multifaceted approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the enhanced ozonation process catalyzed by MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 composite catalysts, shedding light on their potential applications in advanced oxidation processes. PRACTITIONER POINTS: A stable and recyclable magnetic composite MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 catalyst was synthesized through a simple method. The synergistic effect and catalytic mechanism of the MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 catalyst were comprehensively analyzed and discussed. A kinetic model for the catalytic ozone oxidation of vanillin was introduced, providing valuable insights into the reaction dynamics.

Functionalization of Magnetic UiO-66-NH2 with a Chiral Cu(l-proline)2 Complex as a Hybrid Asymmetric Catalyst for CO2 Conversion into Cyclic Carbonates

In this study, a chiral [Cu(l-proline)2] complex-modified Fe3O4@SiO2@UiO-66-NH2(Zr) metal-organic framework [Fe3O4@SiO2@UiO-66-NH-Cu(l-proline)2] via multifunctionalization strategies was designed and synthesized. One simple approach to chiralize an achiral MOF-structure that cannot be directly chiralized using a chiral secondary agent like 4-hydroxy-l-proline. Therefore, this chiral catalyst was synthesized with a simple and multistep method. Accordingly, Fe3O4@SiO2@UiO-66-NH2 has been synthesized via Fe3O4 modification with tetraethyl orthosilicate and subsequently with ZrCl4 and 2-aminoterephthalic acid. The presence of the silica layer helps to stabilize the Fe3O4 core, while the bonding between Zr4+ and the -OH groups in the silica layer promotes the development of Zr-MOFs on the Fe3O4 surface, and then the surfaces of the synthesized magnetic MOFs composite are functionalized with 1,2-dichloroethane and Cu(II) complex with 4-hydroxy-l-proline, [Cu(l-proline)2] to afford the magnetically chiral nanocatalyst. Multiple techniques were employed to characterize this magnetically chiral nanocatalyst such as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), circular dichroism (CD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses. Moreover, a magnetically chiral nanocatalyst shows the asymmetric CO2 fixation reaction under solvent-free conditions at 80 °C and in ethanol under reflux conditions with up to 99 and 98% ee, respectively. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism was illustrated concerning the total energy of the reactant, intermediates and product, and the structural parameters were analyzed.

Pioneering electrochemical detection unveils erdafitinib: a breakthrough in anticancer agent determination

The successful fabrication is reported of highly crystalline Co nanoparticles interconnected with zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-12) -based amorphous porous carbon using the molten-salt-assisted approach utilizing NaCl. Single crystal diffractometers (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses confirm the codoped amorphous carbon structure. Crystallite size was calculated by Scherrer (34 nm) and Williamson-Hall models (42 nm). The magnetic properties of NPCS (N-doped porous carbon sheet) were studied using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The NPCS has a magnetic saturation (Ms) value of 1.85 emu/g. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that Co/Co3O4 nanoparticles are homogeneously distributed in the carbon matrix. While a low melting point eutectic salt acts as an ionic liquid solvent, ZIF-12, at high temperature, leading cobalt nanoparticles with a trace amount of Co3O4 interconnected by conductive amorphous carbon. In addition, the surface area (89.04 m2/g) and pore architectures of amorphous carbon embedded with Co nanoparticles are created using the molten salt approach. Thanks to this inexpensive and effective method, the optimal composite porous carbon structures were obtained with the strategy using NaCl salt and showed distinct electrochemical performance on electrochemical methodology revealing the analytical profile of Erdatifinib (ERD) as a sensor modifier. The linear response spanned from 0.01 to 7.38 μM, featuring a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.36 nM and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 11.2 nM. The developed sensor was examined in terms of selectivity, repeatability, and reproducibility. The fabricated electrode was utilized for the quantification of Erdafitinib in urine samples and pharmaceutical dosage forms. This research provides a fresh outlook on the advancements in electrochemical sensor technology concerning the development and detection of anticancer drugs within the realms of medicine and pharmacology.

Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation Using Palladium Membrane Reactors

Hydrogenation is a crucial chemical process employed in a myriad of industries, often facilitated by metals such as Pd, Pt, and Ni as catalysts. Traditional thermocatalytic hydrogenation usually necessitates high temperature and elevated pressure, making the process energy intensive. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation offers an alternative but suffers from issues such as competing H2 evolution, electrolyte separation, and limited solvent selection. This Perspective introduces the evolution and advantages of the electrocatalytic Pd membrane reactor (ePMR) as a solution to these challenges. ePMR utilizes a Pd membrane to physically separate the electrochemical chamber from the hydrogenation chamber, permitting the use of water as the hydrogen source and eliminating the need for H2 gas. This setup allows for greater control over reaction conditions, such as solvent and electrolyte selection, while mitigating issues such as low Faradaic efficiency and complex product separation. Several representative hydrogenation reactions (e.g., hydrogenation of C=C, C≡C, C=O, C≡N, and O=O bonds) achieved via ePMR over the past 30 years were concisely discussed to highlight the unique advantages of ePMR. Promising research directions along with the advancement of ePMR for more challenging hydrogenation reactions are also proposed. Finally, we provide a prospect for future development of this distinctive hydrogenation strategy using hydrogen-permeable membrane electrodes.

Correlations in Charged Multipore Systems: Implications for Enhancing Selectivity and Permeability in Nanoporous Membranes

Nanoporous membranes have emerged as powerful tools for diverse applications, including gas separation and water desalination. Achieving high permeability for desired molecules alongside exceptional rejection of other species presents a significant design challenge. One potential strategy involves optimizing the chemistry and geometry of isolated nanopores to enhance permeability and selectivity while maximizing their density within a membrane. However, the impact of the pore proximity on membrane performance remains an open question. Through path sampling simulations of model graphitic membranes with multiple subnanometer pores, we reveal that nanoscale proximity between pores detrimentally affects water permeability and salt rejection. Specifically, counterion transport is decelerated, while co-ion transport is accelerated, due to direct interactions among water molecules, salt ions, and the dipoles within neighboring pores. Notably, the observed ionic transport time scales significantly deviate from established theories such as the access resistance model but are well explained using the simple phenomenological model that we develop in this work. We use this model to prescreen and optimize pore arrangements that elicit minimal correlations at a target pore density. These findings deepen our understanding of multipore systems, informing the rational design of nanoporous membranes for enhanced separation processes such as water desalination. They also shed light on the physiology of biological cells that employ ion channel proteins to modulate ion transport and reversal potentials.

Tailoring Enantiomeric Chiral Channels in Metal-Peptide Networks: A Novel Foldamer-Based Approach for Host-Guest Interactions

Designing chiral channels in organic frameworks presents an ongoing challenge due to the intricate control of size, shape, and functionality required. A novel approach is presented, which crafts enantiomeric chiral channels in metal-peptide networks (MPNs) by integrating short foldamer ligands with CuI clusters. The MPN structure serves as a 3D blueprint for host-guest chemistry, fostering modular substitution to refine chiral channel properties at the atomic scale. Incorporating hydrogen bond networks augments guest molecule interactions with the channel surface. This approach expedites enantiomer discrimination in racemic mixtures and incites adaptable guest molecules to take on specific axially chiral conformations. Distinct from traditional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and conventional reticular architectures, this foldamer-based methodology provides a predictable and customizable host-guest interaction system within a 3D topology. This innovation sets the stage for multifunctional materials that merge host-guest interaction systems with metal-complex properties, opening up potential applications in catalysis, sensing, and drug delivery.

Effect of Extra-Framework Anion Substitution on the Properties of a Chiral Crystalline Sponge

Chiral metal-organic materials, CMOMs, are of interest as they can offer selective binding sites for chiral guests. Such binding sites can enable CMOMs to serve as chiral crystalline sponges (CCSs) to determine molecular structure and/or purify enantiomers. We recently reported on the chiral recognition properties of a homochiral cationic diamondoid, dia, network {[Ni(S-IDEC)(bipy)(H2O)][NO3]}n (S-IDEC = S-indoline-2-carboxylicate, bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine), CMOM-5[NO3]. The modularity of CMOM-5[NO3] means there are five feasible approaches to fine-tune structures and properties via substitution of one or more of the following components: metal cation (Ni2+); bridging ligand (S-IDEC); linker (bipy); extra-framework anion (NO3-); and terminal ligand (H2O). Herein, we report the effect of anion substitution on the CCS properties of CMOM-5[NO3] by preparing and characterizing {[Ni(S-IDEC)(bipy)(H2O)][BF4]}n, CMOM-5[BF4]. The chiral channels in CMOM-5[BF4] enabled it to function as a CCS for determination of the absolute crystal structures of both enantiomers of three chiral compounds: 1-phenyl-1-butanol (1P1B); methyl mandelate (MM); ethyl mandelate (EM). Chiral resolution experiments revealed CMOM-5[BF4] to be highly selective toward the S-isomers of MM and EM with enantiomeric excess, ee, values of 82.6 and 78.4%, respectively. The ee measured for S-EM surpasses the 64.3% exhibited by [DyNaL(H2O)4] 6H2O and far exceeds that of CMOM-5[NO3] (6.0%). Structural studies of the binding sites in CMOM-5[BF4] provide insight into their high enantioselectivity.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered one of the most important materials for carbon capture and storage (CCS) due to the advantages of porosity, multifunction, diverse structure, and controllable chemical composition. With the continuous development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, more and more machine learning models are used to identify MOFs with high performance within a massive search space. However, current works have yet to form a model that uses graph-structured data only, which can predict the adsorption properties of single and binary components. In this work, we proposed and developed a graph transformer, combined with convolution parallel networks, called GC-Trans. The model can accurately and efficiently predict the adsorption performance of MOFs under the single- and binary-component adsorption conditions using only the features of the crystal diagram as inputs. By extracting and fusing local and global feature information, the model has stronger expression and generalization abilities. Thus, we used it to screen the ARC-MOF database and analyze the MOF structures that meet the target requirements. Additionally, to demonstrate the transferability of the model, we applied transfer learning methods to predict the CO2/CH4 separations and CH4 uptake, both of which showed good predictive performance.

Metal-Organic Frameworks/Graphdiyne/Copper Foam Composite Membranes for Catalytic Applications

Graphdiyne (GDY) with a three-dimensional network structure was synthesized on a copper foam (CF) via an in situ Glaser-Hay coupling reaction. A metal-organic framework/GDY composite membrane was designed and synthesized for the first time. CF serves as a template and catalyst for the directed polymerization of GDY membranes. The catalytic activities of HKUST-1/GDY/CF membrane in wet peroxide oxidation of phenol, oxidation of benzyl alcohol, and ring opening of epoxide were studied. The composite membrane has the advantages of appropriateness for continuous operation, simple use process, easy recycling, high catalytic efficiency, etc. It was found that the incorporation of GDY can facilitate electron transfer and effectively improve the catalytic activity of HKUST-1 in membrane catalysis.

Rational design of stable functional metal-organic frameworks

Functional porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been explored for a number of potential applications in catalysis, chemical sensing, water capture, gas storage, and separation. MOFs are among the most promising candidates to address challenges facing our society related to energy and environment, but the successful implementation of functional porous MOF materials are contingent on their stability; therefore, the rational design of stable MOFs plays an important role towards the development of functional porous MOFs. In this Focus article, we summarize progress in the rational design and synthesis of stable MOFs with controllable pores and functionalities. The implementation of reticular chemistry allows for the rational top-down design of stable porous MOFs with targeted topological networks and pore structures from the pre-selected building blocks. We highlight the reticular synthesis and applications of stable MOFs: (1) MOFs based on high valent metal ions (e.g., Al3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Ti4+ and Zr4+) and carboxylate ligands; (2) MOFs based on low valent metal ions (e.g., Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) and azolate linkers. We envision that the synthetic strategies, including modulated synthesis and post-synthetic modification, can potentially be extended to other more complex systems like metal-phosphonate framework materials.

Acidic Properties of Known and New COOH-Functionalized M(IV) Metal-Organic Frameworks

Herein, we report two new COOH-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of composition [M6 O4 (OH)6 (PMA)2 (H2 PMA)]×H2 O, M=Zr, Hf), denoted CAU-61, synthesized by using pyromellitic acid (H4 PMA), a tetracarboxylic acid, as the linker and acetic acid as the solvent. The structure was determined from powder X-ray diffraction data and one-dimensional inorganic building units are connected through tetracarboxylate as well as dicarboxylate linker molecules, resulting in highly stable microporous framework structures with limiting and maximum pore diameter of ∼3.6 and ∼5.0 Å, respectively, lined with -COOH groups. Thermal stabilities of up to 400 °C in air, chemical stability in water at pH 1 to 12 and water uptake of 17 mol/mol prompted us to study the proton exchange of the μ2 -OH, μ3 -OH of the IBU and -COOH groups of the linker by titration with LiOH. Comparison of the pKa values with three UiO-66 derivatives confirms distinct pKa value ranges and trends for the different acidic protons. Furthermore, the preparation of Zr-CAU-61 membranes and first results on permeation of dyes and ions in aqueous solutions are presented.

Incorporation of Chiral Frustrated Lewis Pair into Metal-Organic Framework with Tailored Microenvironment for Heterogeneous Enantio- and Chemoselective Hydrogenation

The development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts with multiselectivity (e.g., enantio- and chemoselectivity) has long been sought after but with limited progress being made so far. To achieve enantio- and chemoselectivity in a heterogeneous system, as inspired by enzymes, we illustrate herein an approach of creating an enzyme-mimic region (EMR) within the nanospace of a metal-organic framework (MOF) as exemplified in the context of incorporating a chiral frustrated Lewis pair (CFLP) into a MOF with a tailored pore environment. Due to the high density of the EMR featuring the active site of CFLP and auxiliary sites of the hydroxyl group/open metal site within the vicinity of CFLP, the resultant EMR@MOF demonstrated excellent catalysis performance in heterogeneous hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated imines to afford chiral β-unsaturated amines with high yields and high enantio- and chemoselectivity. The role of the hydroxyl group/open metal site in regulating chemoselectivity was proved by the observation of a catalyst-substrate interaction experimentally, which was also rationalized by computational results. This work not only contributes a MOF as a new platform for multiselective catalysis but also opens a promising avenue to develop heterogeneous catalysts with multiselectivity for challenging yet important transformations.

An amine decorated MOF for direct capture of CO2 from ambient air

A Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized by the self-assembly of the dicarboxylate ligand terephthalic acid (TPA), 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-TPA) and N-donor auxiliary ligand 1,4-bis(4-pyridinylmethyl)piperazine (bpmp) using Zn(NO3)2·6H2O under hydrothermal conditions. {[Zn(TPA)0.5(NH2TPA)0.5(bpmp)]·DMF·7H2O}n (framework 1) has an sra topology with a BET surface area of 756 m2 g-1. The microporous nature of the framework is apparent from the significant CO2 adsorption capacities observed at various temperatures: 57 cc g-1 at 283 K, 46 cc g-1 at 293 K, 37 cc g-1 at 303 K, and 30 cc g-1 at 313 K. The considerable CO2 adsorption may be caused by the existence of free carboxylate and amine substituents that interact with the gas molecules and micropores. At room temperature, the activated MOF readily converts CO2 into cyclic carbonates when a suspension of the MOF is bubbled with ambient air and different epoxides under solvent-free conditions. The amine groups located within the pores of the MOF interact with CO2 molecules, enhancing their sorption and conversion to cyclic carbonates. However, due to interpenetration within framework 1, only smaller size epoxides can be accommodated and converted to cyclic carbonates in good yields. Additionally, the effectiveness of the catalyst is further confirmed by the positive outcomes obtained from the hot filtration control test. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) molecular simulations were utilized to gain a better understanding of molecular interactions. GCMC results are in line with the experiments. The substantial adsorption of CO2 can be ascribed to the strong intermolecular interactions that occur between the amine groups within the framework and the CO2 molecules.

MOFganic Chemistry: Challenges and Opportunities for Metal-Organic Frameworks in Synthetic Organic Chemistry

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous, crystalline solids constructed from organic linkers and inorganic nodes that have been widely studied for applications in gas storage, chemical separations, and drug delivery. Owing to their highly modular structures and tunable pore environments, we propose that MOFs have significant untapped potential as catalysts and reagents relevant to the synthesis of next-generation therapeutics. Herein, we outline the properties of MOFs that make them promising for applications in synthetic organic chemistry, including new reactivity and selectivity, enhanced robustness, and user-friendly preparation. In addition, we outline the challenges facing the field and propose new directions to maximize the utility of MOFs for drug synthesis. This perspective aims to bring together the organic and MOF communities to develop new heterogeneous platforms capable of achieving synthetic transformations that cannot be replicated by homogeneous systems.

Crystal Engineering of a Chiral Crystalline Sponge That Enables Absolute Structure Determination and Enantiomeric Separation

Chiral metal-organic materials (CMOMs), can offer molecular binding sites that mimic the enantioselectivity exhibited by biomolecules and are amenable to systematic fine-tuning of structure and properties. Herein, we report that the reaction of Ni(NO₃)₂, S-indoline-2-carboxylic acid (S-IDECH), and 4,4'-bipyridine (bipy) afforded a homochiral cationic diamondoid, dia, network, [Ni(S-IDEC)(bipy)(H₂O)][NO₃], CMOM-5. Composed of rod building blocks (RBBs) cross-linked by bipy linkers, the activated form of CMOM-5 adapted its pore structure to bind four guest molecules, 1-phenyl-1-butanol (1P1B), 4-phenyl-2-butanol (4P2B), 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanol (MPE), and methyl mandelate (MM), making it an example of a chiral crystalline sponge (CCS). Chiral resolution experiments revealed enantiomeric excess, ee, values of 36.2-93.5%. The structural adaptability of CMOM-5 enabled eight enantiomer@CMOM-5 crystal structures to be determined. The five ordered crystal structures revealed that host-guest hydrogen-bonding interactions are behind the observed enantioselectivity, three of which represent the first crystal structures determined of the ambient liquids R-4P2B, S-4P2B, and R-MPE.

DigiMOF: A Database of Metal-Organic Framework Synthesis Information Generated via Text Mining

The vastness of materials space, particularly that which is concerned with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), creates the critical problem of performing efficient identification of promising materials for specific applications. Although high-throughput computational approaches, including the use of machine learning, have been useful in rapid screening and rational design of MOFs, they tend to neglect descriptors related to their synthesis. One way to improve the efficiency of MOF discovery is to data-mine published MOF papers to extract the materials informatics knowledge contained within journal articles. Here, by adapting the chemistry-aware natural language processing tool, ChemDataExtractor (CDE), we generated an open-source database of MOFs focused on their synthetic properties: the DigiMOF database. Using the CDE web scraping package alongside the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) MOF subset, we automatically downloaded 43,281 unique MOF journal articles, extracted 15,501 unique MOF materials, and text-mined over 52,680 associated properties including the synthesis method, solvent, organic linker, metal precursor, and topology. Additionally, we developed an alternative data extraction technique to obtain and transform the chemical names assigned to each CSD entry in order to determine linker types for each structure in the CSD MOF subset. This data enabled us to match MOFs to a list of known linkers provided by Tokyo Chemical Industry UK Ltd. (TCI) and analyze the cost of these important chemicals. This centralized, structured database reveals the MOF synthetic data embedded within thousands of MOF publications and contains further topology, metal type, accessible surface area, largest cavity diameter, pore limiting diameter, open metal sites, and density calculations for all 3D MOFs in the CSD MOF subset. The DigiMOF database and associated software are publicly available for other researchers to rapidly search for MOFs with specific properties, conduct further analysis of alternative MOF production pathways, and create additional parsers to search for additional desirable properties.

An electrochemical sensor based on Ce-MOF-derived Ce-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) composite for efficient determination of rutin in food

As a common antioxidant and nutritional fortifier in food chemistry, rutin has positive therapeutic effects against novel coronaviruses. Here, Ce-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (Ce-PEDOT) nanocomposites derived through cerium-based metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF) as a sacrificial template have been synthesized and successfully applied to electrochemical sensors. Due to the outstanding electrical conductivity of PEDOT and the high catalytic activity of Ce, the nanocomposites were used for the detection of rutin. The Ce-PEDOT/GCE sensor detects rutin over a linear range of 0.02-9 μM with the limit of detection of 14.7 nM (S/N = 3). Satisfactory results were obtained in the determination of rutin in natural food samples (buckwheat tea and orange). Moreover, the redox mechanism and electrochemical reaction sites of rutin were investigated by the CV curves of scan rate and density functional theory. This work is the first to demonstrate the combined PEDOT and Ce-MOF-derived materials as an electrochemical sensor to detect rutin, thus opening a new window for the application of the material in detection.

Effect of Functional Groups on Low-Concentration Carbon Dioxide Capture in -Type Metal-Organic Frameworks

The selective capture of low-concentration CO₂ from air or confined spaces remains a great challenge. In this study, various functional groups were introduced into UiO-66 to generate functionalized derivatives (UiO-66-R, R = NO₂, NH₂, OH, and CH₃), aiming at significantly enhancing CO₂ adsorption and separation efficiency. More significantly, UiO-66-NO₂ and UiO-66-NH₂ with high polarity exhibit exceptional CO₂ affinity and optimal separation characteristics in mixed CO₂/O₂/N₂ (1:21:78). In addition, the impressive stability of UiO-66-NO₂ and UiO-66-NH₂ endows them with excellent recycling stability. The effective adsorption and separation performances demonstrated by these two functional materials suggest their potential as promising physical adsorbents for capturing low-concentration CO₂.

A Stable Triphenylamine-Based Zn(II)-MOF for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution and Photooxidative Carbon-Carbon Coupling Reaction

Efficient charge transfer has always been a challenge in heterogeneous MOF-based photoredox catalysis due to the poor electrical conductivity of the MOF photocatalyst, the toilless electron-hole recombination, and the uncontrollable host-guest interactions. Herein, a propeller-like tris(3'-carboxybiphenyl)amine (H₃TCBA) ligand was synthesized to fabricate a 3D Zn₃O cluster-based Zn(II)-MOF photocatalyst, Zn₃(TCBA)₂(μ₃-H₂O)H₂O (Zn-TCBA), which was applied to efficient photoreductive H₂ evolution and photooxidative aerobic cross-dehydrogenation coupling reactions of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinolines and nitromethane. In Zn-TCBA, the ingenious introduction of the meta-position benzene carboxylates on the triphenylamine motif not only promotes Zn-TCBA to exhibit a broad visible-light absorption with a maximum absorption edge of 480 nm but also causes special phenyl plane twists with dihedral angles of 27.8-45.8° through the coordination to Zn nodes. The semiconductor-like Zn clusters and the twisted TCBA^3- antenna with multidimensional π interaction sites facilitate photoinduced electron transfer to render Zn-TCBA a good photocatalytic H₂ evolution efficiency of 27.104 mmol·g^-1·h^-1 in the presence of [Co(bpy)₃]Cl₂ under visible-light illumination, surpassing many non-noble-metal MOF systems. Moreover, the positive enough excited-state potential of 2.03 V and the semiconductor-like characteristics of Zn-TCBA endow Zn-TCBA with double oxygen activation ability for photocatalytic oxidation of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinoline substrates with a yield up to 98.7% over 6 h. The durability of Zn-TCBA and the possible catalytic mechanisms were also investigated by a series of experiments including PXRD, IR, EPR, and fluorescence analyses.

TM-Free and TM-Catalyzed Mechanosynthesis of Functional Polymers

Mechanochemically induced methods are commonly used for the depolymerization of polymers, including plastic and agricultural wastes. So far, these methods have rarely been used for polymer synthesis. Compared to conventional polymerization in solutions, mechanochemical polymerization offers numerous advantages such as less or no solvent consumption, the accessibility of novel structures, the inclusion of co-polymers and post-modified polymers, and, most importantly, the avoidance of problems posed by low monomer/oligomer solubility and fast precipitation during polymerization. Consequently, the development of new functional polymers and materials, including those based on mechanochemically synthesized polymers, has drawn much interest, particularly from the perspective of green chemistry. In this review, we tried to highlight the most representative examples of transition-metal (TM)-free and TM-catalyzed mechanosynthesis of some functional polymers, such as semiconductive polymers, porous polymeric materials, sensory materials, materials for photovoltaics, etc.

Solubilizing Metal-Organic Frameworks for an In Situ IR-SEC Study of a CO2 Reduction Catalyst

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are typically assembled by bridging metal centers with organic linkers for various applications, including providing robust support for heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 reduction. In this study, we have demonstrated the solubilization of a MOF tethered to a CO2-reducing electrocatalyst and studied its fundamental electrochemistry in THF solvent using infrared spectroelectrochemistry (IR-SEC). The fundamental electrochemical properties of this immobilized catalyst were compared to that of its homogeneous counterpart. This approach provides a foundation for future experimental studies to bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous electrocatalysis.

Utilizing Metal-Thiocatecholate Functionalized UiO-66 Framework for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Exploiting clean energy is essential for sustainable development and sunlight-driven photocatalytic water splitting represents one of the most promising approaches toward this goal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are competent photocatalysts owing to their tailorable functionality, well-defined structure, and high porosity. Yet, the introduction of the unambiguous metal-centered active site into MOFs is still challenging since framework motifs capable of anchoring metal ions firmly are lacking. Herein, the assembly using 1,4-dicarboxylbenzene-2,3-dithiol (H₂ dcbdt) and Zr-Oxo clusters to give a thiol-functionalized UiO-66 type framework, UiO-66-dcbdt, is reported. The thiocatechols on the struts are allowed to capture transition metal (TM) ions to generate UiO-66-dcbdt-M (M  = Fe, Ni, Cu) with unambiguous metal-thiocatecholate moieties for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). UiO-66-dcbdt-Cu is found the best catalyst exhibiting an HER rate of 4.18 mmol g^-1  h^-1  upon irradiation with photosensitizing Ru-polypyridyl complex. To skip the use of the external sensitizer, UiO-66-dcbdt-Cu is heterojunctioned with titanium dioxide (TiO₂ ) and achieves an HER rate of 12.63 mmol g^-1  h^-1  (32.3 times that of primitive TiO₂ ). This work represents the first example of MOF assembly employing H₂ dcbdt as the mere linker followed by chelation with TM ions and undoubtedly fuels the rational design of MOF photocatalysts bearing well-defined active sites.

Ratiometric luminescent sensing of a biomarker for sugar consumption in an aqueous medium using a Cu(II) coordination polymer

An innovative [Cu(Hadp)₂(Bimb)]_n (KA@CP-S3) coordination polymer expands its dimensionality from a 1D chain to a 2D network. The topological analysis reveals that KA@CP-S3 has 2-connected uninodal 2D 2C1 topology. KA@CP-S3 has capable luminescent sensing for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitroaromatics, heavy metal ions, anions, disposed antibiotics (nitrofurantoin and tetracycline) and biomarkers. Intriguingly, KA@CP-S3 exhibits outstanding selective quenching of about 90.7% and 90.5% for the 125 mg dl^-1 and 150 mg dl^-1 strengths of sucrose, respectively, in aqueous solution along with other ranges in between. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of KA@CP-S3 for the potentially harmful organic dye Bromophenol Blue displays 95.4%, which is the highest among the 13 dyes that were evaluated.

Microenvironment Modulation of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Coordination Olefin Oligomerization and (co)Polymerization

The majority of commercial polyolefins are produced by coordination polymerization using early or late transition metal catalysts. Molecular catalysts containing these transition metals (Ti, Zr, Cr, Ni, and Fe, etc.) are loaded on supports for controlled polymerization behavior and polymer morphology in slurry or gas phase processes. Within the last few years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of unique porous crystalline materials constructed from metal ions/clusters and organic ligands, have been designed and utilized as excellent supports for heterogeneous polymerization catalysis whose high density and uniform distribution of active sites would benefit the modulations of molecular weight distributions of high-performance olefin oligomers and (co)polymers. Impressive efforts have been made to modulate the microenvironment surrounding the active centers at the atomic level for improved activities of MOFs-based catalysts and controlled selectivity of olefin insertion. This review aims to draw a comprehensive picture of MOFs for coordination olefin oligomerization and (co)polymerization in the past decades with respect to different transition metal active centers, various incorporation sites, and finally microenvironment modulation. In consideration of more efforts are needed to overcome challenges for further industrial and commercial application, a brief outlook is provided.

An enhanced chemiluminescence hybrids of luminol by sulfonated polyaniline decorated copper-based metal organic frame composite applicable to the measurement of hydrogen peroxide in a wide pH range

Here, sulfonated polyaniline (SPAN) was decorated on the surface of copper-based metal organic frame (HKUST-1) and the composite was functionalized by luminol to construct a chemiluminescence (CL) hybrids (SPAN/HKUST-1@Luminol). The as-prepared SPAN/HKUST-1@Luminol demonstrated a great dispersion and stability performance in aqueous solution. Moreover, the resultant SPAN/HKUST-1@Luminol hybrids exhibited extremely strong CL properties, and the CL quantum yield was 136 times higher than that of luminol. In particular, it exhibited outstanding CL activity not only under alkaline conditions, but also under neutral conditions. The sensitive response of the hybrid to hydrogen peroxide was used to construct CL methods for the detection of hydrogen peroxide at a wide range of pH, with the detection limit of 60 nM at a neutral condition and 25 pM at alkaline condition. Due to strong and stable signal of the SPAN/HKUST-1@Luminol, the CL method provides a viable tool for determination of H₂O₂ in biological systems and enabled the monitoring of stimulated production of H₂O₂ released by living cells.

Amide Functionalized Mesoporous MOF LOCOM-1 as a Stable Highly Active Basic Catalyst for Knoevenagel Condensation Reaction

Acyl-amide is extensively used as functional group and is a superior contender for the design of MOFs with the guest accessible functional organic sites. A novel acyl-amide-containing tetracarboxylate ligand, bis(3,5-dicarboxy-pheny1)terephthalamide, has been successfully synthesized. The H₄L linker has some fascinating attributes as follows: (i) four carboxylate moieties as the coordination sites confirm affluent coordination approaches to figure a diversity of structure; (ii) two acyl-amide groups as the guest interaction sites can engender guest molecules integrated into the MOF networks through H-bonding interfaces and have a possibility to act as functional organic sites for the condensation reaction. A mesoporous MOF ([Cu₂(L)(H₂O)₃]·4DMF·6H₂O) has been prepared in order to produce the amide FOS within the MOF, which will work as guest accessible sites. The prepared MOF was characterized by CHN analysis, PXRD, FTIR spectroscopy, and SEM analysis. The MOF showed superior catalytic activity for Knoevenagel condensation. The catalytic system endures a broad variety of the functional groups and presents high to modest yields of aldehydes containing electron withdrawing groups (4-chloro, 4-fluoro, 4-nitro), offering a yield > 98 in less reaction time as compared to aldehydes with electron donationg groups (4-methyl). The amide decorated MOF (LOCOM-1-) as a heterogeneous catalyst can be simply recovered by centrifugation and recycled again without a flagrant loss of its catalytic efficiency.

Exploring Helical Peptides and Foldamers for the Design of Metal Helix Frameworks: Current Trends and Future Perspectives

Flexible and biocompatible metal peptide frameworks (MPFs) derived from short and ultra-short peptides have been explored for the storage of greenhouse gases, molecular recognition, and chiral transformations. In addition to short flexible peptides, peptides with specifically folded conformations have recently been utilized to fabricate a variety of metal helix frameworks (MHFs). The secondary structures of the peptides govern the structure-assembly relationship and thereby control the formation of three-dimensional (3D)-MHFs. Particularly, the hierarchical structural organization of peptide-based MHFs has not yet been discussed in detail. Here, we describe the recent progress of metal-driven folded peptide assembly to construct 3D porous structures for use in future energy storage, chiral recognition, and biomedical applications, which could be envisioned as an alternative to the conventional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

Application of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) in Environmental Biosystems

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials that are formed by self-assembling organic linkers and metal ions with large specific areas and pore volumes. Their chemical tunability, structural diversity, and tailor-ability make them adaptive to decorate many substrate materials, such as biomass-derived carbon materials, and competitive in many environmental biosystems, such as biofuel cells, bioelectrocatalysts, microbial metal reduction, and fermentation systems. In this review, we surmised the recent progress of MOFs and MOF-derived materials and their applications in environmental biosystems. The behavior of MOFs and MOF-derived materials in different environmental biosystems and their influences on performance are described. The inherent mechanisms will guide the rational design of MOF-related materials and lead to a better understanding of their interaction with biocomponents.

Chiral Frustrated Lewis Pair@Metal-Organic Framework as a New Platform for Heterogeneous Asymmetric Hydrogenation

Asymmetric hydrogenation, a seminal strategy for the synthesis of chiral molecules, remains largely unmet in terms of activation by non-metal sites of heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, as demonstrated by combined computational and experimental studies, we present a general strategy for integrating rationally designed molecular chiral frustrated Lewis pair (CFLP) with porous metal-organic framework (MOF) to construct the catalyst CFLP@MOF that can efficiently promote the asymmetric hydrogenation in a heterogeneous manner, which for the first time extends the concept of chiral frustrated Lewis pair from homogeneous system to heterogeneous catalysis. Significantly, the developed CFLP@MOF, inherits the merits of both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, with high activity/enantio-selectivity and excellent recyclability/regenerability. Our work not only advances CFLP@MOF as a new platform for heterogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation, but also opens a new avenue for the design and preparation of advanced catalysts for asymmetric catalysis.

Conformational Control of Organocatalyst in Strongly Brønsted-Acidic Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enantioselective Catalysis

Chiral imidodiphosphates (IDPs) have emerged as strong Brønsted acid catalysts for many enantioselective processes. However, the dynamic transformation between O,O-syn and O,O-anti conformers typically results in low enantioselectivity. Here we demonstrate that topologies of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be exploited to control IDP conformations and local chiral microenvironments for enantioselective catalysis. Two porous Dy-MOFs with different topologies are obtained from an enantiopure 1,1'-biphenol IDP-based tetracarboxylate ligand. While the ligand adopts a 4- or 3-connected (c) binding mode, all IDPs are rigidified to get only a single O,O-syn conformation and display greatly enhanced Brønsted acidity relative to the free IDP. The MOF with the 4-c IDP that has a relatively less compact shape than the 3-c IDP can be an efficient and recyclable heterogeneous Brønsted acid catalysing the challenging asymmetric O,O-acetalization reaction with up to 96 % enantiomeric excess.

A Manganese(II) 3D Metal–Organic Framework with Siloxane-Spaced Dicarboxylic Ligand: Synthesis, Structure, and Properties

A new metal–organic framework {[Mn4(Cx)3(etdipy)5]·2ClO4}n (1) was prepared via the complexation of manganese ion from a Mn(ClO4)2 source with 1,3-bis(carboxypropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane (Cx) and 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (etdipy) in the presence of 2,4-lutidine as a deprotonating agent. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a dense 3D framework structure. The presence in the structure of flexible tetramethyldisiloxane moieties, which tend to orient themselves at the interface with the air, gives the compound a highly hydrophobic character, as indicated by the result of the water vapor sorption analysis in the dynamic regime, as well as the shape and stability of the water droplet on the crystalline mass of the compound. The compound is an electrical insulator, and due to its hydrophobicity, this characteristic is unaffected by environmental dampness. The thermal analysis indicated thermal stability up to about 300 °C and an unusual thermal transition for an MOF structure, more precisely a glass transition at 24 °C, the latter also being attributed to the flexible segments in the structure. The magnetic studies showed dominant antiferromagnetic interactions along the metal ion chain in compound 1.

Graphene-Based Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids for Applications in Catalysis, Environmental, and Energy Technologies

Current energy and environmental challenges demand the development and design of multifunctional porous materials with tunable properties for catalysis, water purification, and energy conversion and storage. Because of their amenability to de novo reticular chemistry, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become key materials in this area. However, their usefulness is often limited by low chemical stability, conductivity and inappropriate pore sizes. Conductive two-dimensional (2D) materials with robust structural skeletons and/or functionalized surfaces can form stabilizing interactions with MOF components, enabling the fabrication of MOF nanocomposites with tunable pore characteristics. Graphene and its functional derivatives are the largest class of 2D materials and possess remarkable compositional versatility, structural diversity, and controllable surface chemistry. Here, we critically review current knowledge concerning the growth, structure, and properties of graphene derivatives, MOFs, and their graphene@MOF composites as well as the associated structure-property-performance relationships. Synthetic strategies for preparing graphene@MOF composites and tuning their properties are also comprehensively reviewed together with their applications in gas storage/separation, water purification, catalysis (organo-, electro-, and photocatalysis), and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Current challenges in the development of graphene@MOF hybrids and their practical applications are addressed, revealing areas for future investigation. We hope that this review will inspire further exploration of new graphene@MOF hybrids for energy, electronic, biomedical, and photocatalysis applications as well as studies on previously unreported properties of known hybrids to reveal potential "diamonds in the rough".

"Caught in the Act" @ disruption of A-ET-E process in the recognition of F- by a lamellar EuIII-MOF in heterogeneous manner with logic gate construction: From protagonist idea to implementation world

Development of cost-effective and reliable fluoride sensor for assessing water quality of natural water samples is of immense importance in developing countries as they can provide an easy platform for safeguarding human health. These sensors should be as simple as possible to be fabricated locally by layman. In this context, Eu^III-based MOFs provide trustable platform with bright luminescence in the visible region due to their absorbance-energy transfer-emission (A-ET-E) process. Herein the designed synthesis of a 2D porous coordination polymer, Eu@CMERI, has been carried out following a solvothermal reaction route. The compound shows selective "turn-off" sensing of fluoride in heterogeneous manner from purely aqueous phase and other biological matrices with a detection limit of 28.4 ppb and it carries enormous importance for drinking water analysis under internal regulations. Prohibition of A-ET-E cycle of the Eu^III-MOF is proposed to be the prime reason for fluorescence quenching upon interaction with F^-. DFT studies also revealed that lowest △E_HOMO-LUMO and highest chemical potential value (μ) of F^- are the driving forces for selectivity of Eu^III-MOF towards the targeted anion. The high stability of the porous frameworks along with its interesting sensing features, including fast response and wide linear detection range etc. instigated us not to restrict the chemistry of Eu^III-MOFs at protagonist idea rather to explore its application to real-world analysis. Based on the fluorescence signal exhibited by the targeted analyte, an integrated AND-OR logic gate has also been fabricated which depicts its applicability in molecular electronics. In view of the modular design principle of our polymeric probe, the proposed strategy could open a new horizon to construct powerful sensing materials for ultrafast detection of other important pollutants in the domain of supramolecular chemistry in coming days.
