Evolution of Polynuclear Gold(I) Sulfido Complexes from Clusters and Cages to Macrocycles

Two unprecedented tetratriacontanuclear and tetraicosanuclear gold(I) sulfido clusters (denoted as Au34-LMe and Au24-LCbz) with different temperature-induced stimulus-responsive behavior and emission property have been constructed by taking advantage of the judiciously designed bidentate phosphine ligand. Au34-LMe represents the highest nuclearity of the gold(I) sulfido cluster with more than a thousand atoms in the molecule. Octagonal macrocycles based on metal-cluster nodes have been assembled for the first time. The self-assembly and temperature-induced stimulus-responsive processes were monitored by 1H and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy, and the identities of the discrete gold(I) complexes were established by single-crystal structural analysis and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry data. The steric effects exerted by the substituents on the V-shaped 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene ligand have been shown to govern the self-assembly from the 1D cluster and 3D cage to 2D macrocycles. This work not only offers a new strategy to construct and regulate the structure of 2D macrocyclic gold(I) sulfido complexes but also lays the foundation for the future precise design and controlled construction of higher polygonal and cluster-node macrocycles.

Hexakispyrazolylethane: New Strategy for Stabilization of Hexaarylethane

Hexakis(4-trimethylsilylpyrazol-1-yl)ethane was synthesized by the oxidative dimerization of tris(4-trimethylsilylpyrazol-1-yl)methane. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis of hexakis(4-trimethylsilylpyrazol-1-yl)ethane showed that the ethane C-C bond (1.623(4) Å) is shorter than that in hexaphenylethane (1.67(3) Å). In solution, hexakis(4-trimethylsilylpyrazol-1-yl)ethane existed as a single species, contrastive that conventional hexaphenylethanes can keep the central C-C bond only by the aid of additional bridges between the two triarylmethyl units. Theoretical calculations indicated that the tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methyl radical, which is anticipated to be under equilibrium with hexakis(pyrazol-1-yl)ethane, is less stable than trityl radicals due to lack of delocalization of the radicals. Furthermore, introduction of pyrazole groups allowed additional bridging between the two triarylmethyl moieties through metal coordination to the adjacent N atoms: hexakis(4-trimethylsilylpyrazol-1-yl)ethane exhibited unique coordination to three Ag atoms affording a hexaarylethane analog bearing three N-Ag-N bridges.

Hexa- and octanuclear copper(II) complexes with a tetraeicosaaza amine macrocycle

One hexa- and two octanuclear Cu(II) complexes were synthesised from different metal salts and a very large (8 + 8) tetraeicosaaza macrocycle. These nitrate, chloride and sulphate coordination compounds were characterised by taking elemental analysis, spectroscopy, crystallography and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Their crystal structures revealed different interesting coordination modes of Cu(II) cations and nuclearity in these centrosymmetric complexes. For the sulphate complex two different, homo- vs. heterochiral, arrangements of the same macrocycle L3 around the same Cu(II) cations take place.

Building Blocks for Molecular Polygons Based on Platinum Vertices and Polyynediyl Edges

Reactions of Cl2P(CH2)3PCl2 and p-MgBrC6H4X (X = a/OMe, b/OtBu, c/tBu, d/SiMe3) give the diphosphines (p-XC6H4)2P(CH2)3P(p-C6H4X)2 (1a-d; 47-66%). Additions of 1a,d to (COD)PtCl2 yield (CH2(CH2P(p-C6H4X)2)2)PtCl2 (2a,d; 62-88%), which upon reaction with butadiyne (2 equiv; HNEt2/cat. CuI) give (CH2(CH2P(p-C6H4X)2)2)Pt((C≡C)2H)2 (3a,d; 34-76%). Alternatively, 3a-d can be accessed from trans-(p-tol3P)2Pt((C≡C)2H)2 and 1a-d (30-87%). Reactions of (p-tol3P)2PtCl2 and H(C≡C)2SiR3 (2 equiv, HNEt2/cat. CuI; R = Me/Et/iPr) give trans-(p-tol3P)2Pt((C≡C)2SiR3)2 (77-95%), and subsequent additions of 1a,b,d yield the corresponding adducts (CH2(CH2P(p-C6H4X)2)2)Pt((C≡C)2SiR3)2 (R/X = Me/OMe, 5a; iPr/OMe, 6a; iPr/OtBu, 6b; iPr/SiMe3, 6d; 52-95%) and (for 5a) a luminescent diplatinum byproduct with trans Pt((C≡C)2SiMe3)2 units. 5a and 6b hydrolyze in the presence of F- to 3a,b (92-93%). Reaction of 2a and 3a (HNEt2/cat. CuI) affords the Pt4C16 polygon ([(CH2(CH2P(p-C6H4OMe)2)2)Pt(C≡C)2]4 as an H2NEt2+ Cl- adduct (66%). The 13C{1H} NMR spectra of 3a-d, 5a, and 6a,b,d feature complex AMXX' (CPtPP') spin systems, and simulations allow J values to be extracted. The crystal structures of 2a, 3a,b,d, 5a, and 6a are determined and analyzed.

Potential of nonporous adaptive crystals for hydrocarbon separation

Hydrocarbon separation is an important process in the field of petrochemical industry, which provides a variety of raw materials for industrial production and a strong support for the development of national economy. However, traditional separation processes involve huge energy consumption. Adsorptive separation based on nonporous adaptive crystal (NAC) materials is considered as an attractive green alternative to traditional energy-intensive separation technologies due to its advantages of low energy consumption, high chemical and thermal stability, excellent selective adsorption and separation performance, and outstanding recyclability. Considering the exceptional potential of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation, this review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in various supramolecular host-based NACs. Moreover, the current challenges and future directions are illustrated in detail. It is expected that this review will provide useful and timely references for researchers in this area. Based on a large number of state-of-the-art studies, the review will definitely advance the development of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation and stimulate more interesting studies in related fields.

Hexaphenylbenzene-Based Deep Blue-Emissive Metallacages as Donors for Light-Harvesting Systems

We herein report the preparation of a series of hexaphenylbenzene (HPB)-based deep blue-emissive metallacages via multicomponent coordination-driven self-assembly. These metallacages feature prismatic structures with HPB derivatives as the faces and tetracarboxylic ligands as the pillars, as evidenced by NMR, mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analysis. Light-harvesting systems were further constructed by employing the metallacages as the donor and a naphthalimide derivative (NAP) as the acceptor, owing to their good spectral overlap. The judiciously chosen metallacage serves as the antenna, providing the suitable energy to excite the non-emissive NAP, and thus resulting in bright emission for NAP in the solid state. This study provides a type of HPB-based multicomponent emissive metallacage and explores their applications as energy donors to light up non-emissive fluorophores in the solid state, which will advance the development of emissive metallacages as useful luminescent materials.

Innovation of Imine Metal Chelates as Corrosion Inhibitors at Different Media: A Collective Study

The corrosion inhibition of transition metal chelates derived from Schiff base ligands was tested for (mild, copper, stainless, aluminum and carbon) steel in various concentrations of (HCl, HNO₃ and H₂SO₄) acidic medium at 25 °C through (weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and open circuit potential measurements (OCP)) techniques. The studied compounds were identified with various spectral, analytical and physico-chemical techniques. It was observed that the investigated compounds had a significant inhibitory impact on the corrosion of diverse steels in the medium investigated. The analysis shows that increasing the dose of the studied complexes improves the corresponding inhibitory efficiency values. Negative results of Gibb’s free adsorption energy (ΔGads0) prove the suppression process’s spontaneous and physical adsorption, which contradicts the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. As a result of this insight, a novel bridge between nuclearity driven coordinated inorganic chemistry and materials, as well as corrosion control, has been built. This review provides an overview of the use of Schiff bases and associated transition metals as potential corrosion inhibitors, including the factors that influence their application.

Multinuclear Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of a meso 6 + 6 macrocyclic amine derived from trans-1,2-diaminocyclopentane and 2,6-diformylpyridine

Four hexanuclear chloride and sulphate Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes 1, 2, 4 and 5 and one tetranuclear nitrate Cu(II) complex 3 have been synthesised from appropriate metal salts and 6 + 6 octadecaaza macrocyclic ligands. All obtained coordination compounds have been characterised by elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods (ESI MS, NMR and EPR), magnetic susceptibility measurements and X-ray crystallography. Their X-ray crystal structures reveal different coordination modes of metal cations involved in the obtained centro-symmetrical coordination compounds. The conformational folding of the macrocyclic ligand adopted in the respective complexes depends on the number of metal cations bound within the macrocycle but not on their type. The cavities of these multinuclear complexes might be occupied by solvent molecules and counter anions bound by hydrogen bonds or might be empty in the case where the macrocyclic ring of the ligand is squeezed in the middle. All obtained Ni(II) and Cu(II) coordination compounds are paramagnetic. This has been proved by their ¹H NMR and EPR spectra and magnetic measurements. Direct current (DC) variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements on the polycrystalline samples of 1-5 were carried out in the temperature range of 1.8-300 K. The magnetic behaviour of 1 and 2 is dominated by the magnetic anisotropy of the nickel(II) ion masking the magnetic interactions between magnetic centres. The magnetic data of 3-5 reveal small antiferromagnetic interactions within the Cu₄ and Cu₆ units. EPR experiments for 3-5 show, at 9.6 and 34 GHz frequencies, that the predominant contribution to the orbitals occupied by the unpaired electrons in the ground state originates from d_x²-y².

Self-assembly of Ni(II) metallacycles (a square and a triangle) supported by tetrazine radical bridges

Two Ni(II) molecular metallacycles of [Ni₄(bpz*tz˙^-)₄(N₃)₄] (1) and [Ni₃(bpz^Phtz˙^-)₃(pz^Ph(Cl)tz˙^-)₃]·1.3CH₃OH·9.3H₂O (2) (bpz*tz = 3,6-bis(3,5-dimethyl-pyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine; bpz^Phtz = 3,6-bis(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine; and pz^Ph(Cl)tz = 3-bis(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)-6-Cl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine) are reported. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that 1 displays a square structure while 2 shows a triangle structure due to the steric effect, both bearing tetrazine radical bridges. Furthermore, magnetic studies reveal that the Ni-radical interaction in 1 is strongly ferromagnetic with a coupling constant (J) of 90.8 cm^-1 in the 2J formalist, while the overall antiferromagnetic behaviour of 2 is presumably due to the compete ferromagnetic (for the Ni-radical_bridging interaction with J₁ = 95.4 cm^-1) and antiferromagnetic (for the Ni-radical_terminal interaction, J₂ = -57.5 cm^-1) couplings.

Constructing Supramolecular Frameworks Based Imidazolate-Edge-Bridged Metallacalix[3]arenes via Hierarchical Self-Assemblies

Hierarchical self-assembly of novel supramolecular structures has obtained increasing attention. Herein we design and synthesize the palladium(II)-based molecular basket-like structures, as structural analog of metallacalix[3]arene [M3L3]3+ (M = (dmbpy)Pd, (phen)Pd; dmbpy = 4,4’-dimethyl-bipyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), by coordination-driven self-assembly from imidazolate-containing ligand [4,5-bis(2,5-dimethylthiophen-3-yl)-1H-imidazole (HL) with palladium(II) nitrate precursors (dmbpy)Pd(NO3)2 and (phen)Pd(NO3)2. The difference of the palladium(II) nitrate precursors with π-surface in complex produces variations of the two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) high-ordered supramolecular architectures, constructed by π···π packing and hydrogen bonding interactions, with metallacalixarenes as building blocks. These results provide perceptions of further exploring the hierarchical assembly of supramolecular structures based on π···π packing and multiple hydrogen bonding.

Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of a series of Mn-M-Mn trinuclear complexes with different spin configurations

A series of trinuclear complexes, [MnII2Y^III(L)₂(HL)₂(NO₃)₃][Y^III(NO₃)₅]·7H₂O (1'), [MnII2Gd^III(HL)₄(NO₃)₄]₂[MnII2Gd^III(L)(HL)₃(NO₃)₄][Gd^III(NO₃)₅]₄·2(o-Xy)·12H₂O (2') and [MnII3(L)(HL)₂(NO₃)₄](NO₃)·1.25(p-Xy) (3'), were synthesized using a β-diketone ligand HL (HL = 1,3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-dione). X-ray structural analyses revealed that each complex has a trinuclear core with an Mn(II)-M-Mn(II) arrangement (M = Y^III (1), Gd^III (2), and Mn^II (3)). In 1' with a diamagnetic Y(III) ion, negligible antiferromagnetic interactions between terminal Mn(II) ions are operative. On the other hand, 2' shows ferromagnetic interactions between Mn(II) and Gd(III) ions, affording a spin ground state of S_T = 17/2. The homometallic Mn(II)₃ complex of 3' has an S_T = 5/2 spin ground state resulting from the antiferromagnetic interactions between neighboring Mn(II) ions. The maximum magnetic entropy change (-ΔS_m) of 1'-3' was estimated to be 12.3, 24.8, and 8.0 J kg^-1 K^-1, respectively.

Structural chemistry of host – guest molecular architectures based on mercury-containing macrocycles

Metallomacrocycles that include several metal ions with the Lewis acid properties are peculiar antipodes of crown ethers (referred to as ‘anticrowns’ in the literature). Recently these architectures have been extensively investigated when searching for efficient and selective anion receptors. In this review, we analyze the data on the molecular and crystal structures of supramolecular complexes of mercury-containing macrocycles (hosts) with anions or neutral nucleophiles (guests). The emphasis is on the identification and systematization of the structure types of complexes in dependence of the guest molecule nature, as well as the macrocycle composition and structure. The factors affecting the selectivity of coordination and competitive ability of various electron donor moieties of guest molecules to binding to the macrocycle are considered. The data in the literature on the nonvalent host – guest and host – host interactions, which are responsible for the formation of molecular complexes and their supramolecular association in crystals, are analyzed. The formulated structural regularities of these coordination compounds with an unusual type of molecular architecture open ways to design directly promising molecular materials on their basis.

Construction of Entropically Favored Supramolecular Metal-Ligand Trimeric Assemblies Supported by Flexible Pyridylaminophosphorus(V) Scaffolds

The self-assembly reactions of tetratopic metal acceptors with the flexible bidentate ligands are known to yield self-assembled molecular squares of the type [M₄L₈], triangles of composition [M₃L₆], or a mixture of these two. In this work, we demonstrate the preferential formation of a trimeric cage assembly of the formula [Pd₃(L¹)₆·(BF₄)₆] (1a) over the tetrameric cage [Pd₄(L¹)₈·(BF₄)₈] (1b) by employing a flexible dipodal phosphoramide ligand, [PhPO(NH(3-Py))₂] (L¹; 3-Py = 3-aminopyridine), in a reaction with [Pd(CH₃CN)₄·(BF₄)₂]. The entropically favored trimeric self-assembly of 1a is the predominant species in the solution [dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-d₆] at room temperature. In fact, at higher temperatures, 1a was found to be the only product, as observed from the disappearance of the peak due to 1b in the ³¹P NMR spectrum. However, in a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile (MeCN)-d₃ and DMSO-d₆, the tetrameric species 1b is the preferred species, as revealed by the ³¹P NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectral analyses. The structure of the molecular trimer 1a has been established in the solid state by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Interestingly, treatment of an another flexible ligand, [MePO(NH(3-Py))₂] (L²), with the same Pd(II) acceptor resulted in exclusive formation of the trimeric cage [Pd₃(L²)₆·(BF₄)₆] (2).

Self-Assembly of Metallo-Supramolecules with Dissymmetrical Ligands and Characterization by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Asymmetrical and dissymmetrical structures are widespread and play a critical role in nature and life systems. In the field of metallo-supramolecular assemblies, it is still in its infancy for constructing artificial architectures using dissymmetrical building blocks. Herein, we report the self-assembly of supramolecular systems based on two dissymmetrical double-layered ligands. With the aid of ultra-high-vacuum, low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-LT-STM), we were able to investigate four isomeric structures corresponding to four types of binding modes of ligand LA with two major conformations complexes A. The distribution of isomers measured by STM and total binding energy of each isomer obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the most abundant isomer could be the most stable one with highest total binding energy. Finally, through shortening the linker between inner and outer layers and the length of arms, the arrangement of dissymmetrical ligand LB could be controlled within one binding mode corresponding to the single conformation for complexes B.

On the Heterogeneous Nature of Cisplatin-1-Methyluracil Complexes: Coexistence of Different Aggregation Modes and Partial Loss of NH3 Ligands as Likely Explanation

The conversion of the 1 : 1-complex of Cisplatin with 1-methyluracil (1MeUH), cis-[Pt(NH3 )2 (1MeU-N3)Cl] (1 a) to the aqua species cis-[Pt(NH3 )2 (1MeU-N3)(OH2 )]+ (1 b), achieved by reaction of 1 a with AgNO3 in water, affords a mixture of compounds, the composition of which strongly depends on sample history. The complexity stems from variations in condensation patterns and partial loss of NH3 ligands. In dilute aqueous solution, 1 a, and dinuclear compounds cis-[(NH3 )2 (1MeU-N3)Pt(μ-OH)Pt(1MeU-N3)(NH3 )2 ]+ (3) as well as head-tail cis-[Pt2 (NH3 )4 (μ-1MeU-N3,O4)2 ]2+ (4) represent the major components. In addition, there are numerous other species present in minor quantities, which differ in metal nuclearity, stoichiometry, stereoisomerism, and Pt oxidation state, as revealed by a combination of 1 H NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopy. Their composition appears not to be the consequence of a unique and repeating coordination pattern of the 1MeU ligand in oligomers but rather the coexistence of distinctly different condensation patterns, which include μ-OH, μ-1MeU, and μ-NH2 bridging and combinations thereof. Consequently, the products obtained should, in total, be defined as a heterogeneous mixture rather than a mixture of oligomers of different sizes. In addition, a N2 complex, [Pt(NH3 )(1MeU)(N2 )]+ appears to be formed in gas phase during the ESI-MS experiment. In the presence of Na+ ions, multimers n of 1 a with n=2, 3, 4 are formed that represent analogues of non-metalated uracil quartets found in tetrastranded RNA.

A parallelogram metallomacrocycle bearing self-catenation and its derivative supramolecular isomerism

Macrocycle-based architectures are of importance in synthetic chemistry. Here, a novel parallelogram metallomacrocycle Fe2(LA)2 with reversible structural transformation was designed and synthesized. The template-free metalla[2]catenane [Fe2(LA)2]2 could be obtained by changing the concentration and has been monitored on the basis of NMR analysis. By redesigning the metallo-ligand, a catenane-like intersected parallelogram assembly with two shape-persistent supramolecular isomers was achieved. This work develops the field of terpyridine-based macrocycle system research and is valuable for obtaining other types of supramolecular isomerism.

Octametallic Cluster of Cp*Ir(glycinato) Cations

Removal of chloride from Cp*Ir(glycinato)Cl in noncoordinating solvents with Ag[PF₆] or Tl[PF₆] leads to the formation of a closed octametallic loop of cations. The same loop also sequesters a number of PF₆ ^- counter anions. This is in contrast with reports that piano-stool complexes with amino acids form only trimetallic [Cp*Ir(aminoacidato)]₃ ³⁺ moieties upon creating the cation. Cp*Ir(glycinato)Cl also forms a trimetallic compound as well as a octametallic compound, and the octametallic vs trimetallic formation appears to be dependent on the anion. The synthesis and characterization of the octametallic complex, as well as some monometallic and trimetallic compounds, are reported, including the X-ray crystal structures.

Thermotropic Liquid-Crystalline Materials Based on Supramolecular Coordination Complexes

Liquid crystals are among us, in living organisms and in electronic devices, and they have contributed to the development of our modern society. Traditionally developed by organic chemists, the field of liquid-crystalline materials is now involving chemists and physicists of all domains (computational, physical, inorganic, supramolecular, electro-chemistry, polymers, materials, etc.,). Such diversity in researchers confirms that the field remains highly active and that new applications can be foreseen in the future. In this review, liquid-crystalline materials developed around coordination complexes are presented, focusing on those showing thermotropic behavior, a relatively unexplored family of compounds.

Supramolecular Arene-Ruthenium Metallacycle with Thermotropic Liquid-Crystalline Properties

Functionalization of 1,4-di(4-pyridinyl)benzene with poly(arylester) dendrimers bearing cyanobiphenyl end-groups gives a bidentate dendromesogenic ligand (L) that exhibits thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties. Combination of the diruthenium complex [Ru₂(p-cymene)₂(donq)][DDS]₂ (M) with L, by coordination-driven self-assembly, affords the discrete and well-defined metallacycle M₂L₂. Like L, this supramolecular dendritic system displays mesomorphic properties above 50 °C. Both compounds L and M₂L₂ show smectic phases, characterized by a multilayered organization of the multiple components.

Truncated Sierpiński Triangular Assembly from a Molecular Mortise-Tenon Joint

The amalgamation of different components into a giant and intricate structure that makes quantitative and spontaneous assembly through molecular design is indispensable but challenging. To construct novel metallo-supramolecular architectures, here we present an architectural design principle based on multicomponent self-assembly. Using a carefully designed hexatopic terpyridine-based metallo-organic ligand (MOL), [Ru₂T₂K], we report on the formation of supramolecular trapezoid Zn₅[Ru₂T₂K]V₂, hollow hexagon Zn₁₅[Ru₂T₂K]₃K₃, and giant star-shaped supramolecule Zn₁₈[Ru₂T₂K]₃[Ru₂X₂V]₃, all of which were assembled by one-pot, nearly quantitative assembly of [Ru₂T₂K] with the ditopic 60°-directed bisterpyridine V, tetrakisterpyridine K, and MOL [Ru₂X₂V], respectively. The complementary ligands were selected on the basis of the size- and shape-fit principles, actually similar to the mortise-tenon joint that aligns and locks the two complementary wood components. This strategy is expected to open the door to sophisticated designer supramolecules and nonbiological materials. The multivalent connections within the mutual ligands give rise to the formation of stable assemblies, which are unambiguously characterized by NMR, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, and TEM analyses.

Sulfate Donor Based Dinuclear Heteroleptic Triple-Stranded Helicates from Sulfite and Ditopic Nitrogen Donor Ligands and Their Transformation to Dinuclear Homoleptic Double-Stranded Mesocates

Sulfate donor based supramolecular coordination complexes [{ fac-Re(CO)₃}(μ-SO₄)(L ⁿ)₂{ fac-Re(CO)₃}] (1-3) were obtained using ditopic N donors (L ⁿ; n = 1-3), NaHSO₃, and Re₂(CO)₁₀ in a one-pot, multicomponent, coordination-driven self-assembly approach, in which SO₃^2- becomes oxidized to SO₄^2- during the reaction and acts as a building framework. Complexes 1-3 were characterized using IR, ESI-TOF-MS, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The structures of complexes 1-3 were confirmed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The transformation of the dinuclear heteroleptic triple-stranded helicate to the dinuclear homoleptic double-stranded mesocate [{Re(CO)₃Cl}₂(L ⁿ)₂] (L ⁿ = L¹, L², L³; 4a-6a) was achieved by the addition of BaCl₂. The direct treatment of Re(CO)₅X (X = Cl, Br) with L¹/L²/L³ yielded the dinuclear homoleptic double-stranded helicates [{Re(CO)₃X}₂ (L ⁿ)₂] (4b-6b and 7-9).

Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Magnetic and Electrochemical Properties of Highly Phenyl Substituted Trinuclear 5,6,11,12,17,18-Hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATNPh6)-Bridged Titanium Complexes

Trinuclear titanium complexes coordinated by one ligand with three coordination sites have shown properties of mixed valency and a high number of reversible redox steps. Herein we report on the hexaphenyl-substituted derivative (Cp₂Ti)₃(μ₃-HATNPh₆) (2). On reaction of 2 with the ferrocenium salt [Cp₂Fe]BF₄, the cationic complexes [(Cp₂Ti)₃(μ₃-HATNPh₆)] ⁿ⁺ ( n = 1-3; 3-5) become available in a selective way. Cyclic voltammograms show 10 reversible redox states of the trinuclear species 2 without decomposition. In order to classify the degree of electronic communication between the titanium centers, comproportionation constants K_c, IVCT bands in NIR spectra, and magnetic measurements were analyzed. These parameters show strong coupling effects between the titanium centers but no full delocalization. In addition, single-crystal X-ray analysis of the neutral complex 2 and its oxidation products (1+ (3), 2+ (4), and 3+ (5)) revealed the geometric structure of the molecule in the solid state. For the cationic species anion-π interactions between the electron-deficient central ring of the HATNPh₆ ligand and BF₄^- counterions were found.

Putting a New Spin on Supramolecular Metallacycles: Co3 Triangle and Co4 Square Bearing Tetrazine-Based Radicals as Bridges

The synthesis of two new radical-bridged compounds [Co₃(bptz)₃(dbm)₃]·2toluene (1) and [Co₄(bptz)₄(dbm)₄]·4MeCN (2) (bptz = 3,6-bis(pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine; dbm = 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedionate) is reported. The presence of the ligand-centered radical has been confirmed by X-ray crystallography and SQUID magnetometry. These complexes are the first metallacycles bearing nitrogen heterocyclic radicals as bridges. Magnetic studies reveal strong antiferromagnetic metal···radical coupling with coupling constants of J = -67.5 and -66.8 cm^-1 for 1 and 2, respectively. DFT calculations further support the strong antiferromagnetic coupling between Co^II ions and bptz radicals and confirm S = 3 and S = 4 spin ground states for 1 and 2, respectively.

Oriented assembly of anisotropic nanoparticles into frame-like superstructures

It is fascinating but challenging for nanoscientists to organize nanoparticles (NPs) into ordered architectures just as it is for chemists to manipulate atoms and molecules to form functional molecules and supramolecules. We explore a strategy to assemble anisotropic NPs into open frame-like superstructures via oriented attachment (OA), experimentally realizing a nanoscale analog to the bonding behavior in M₈L₁₂-type supramolecular cubes. We highlight the role of NP shape in the OA-involved assembly for constructing predictable superstructures. In addition, the frame-like superstructures can retain their basic structure when undergoing postcrystallization of the building blocks as well as annealing for conversion toward functional electrocatalytic materials. Our work enables fundamental insights into directional "bonding" among NPs and adds to the growing body of knowledge for bottom-up assembly of anisotropic NPs into sophisticated functional materials.

Self-Assembly of Cyclohelicate [M3 L3 ] Triangles Over [M4 L4 ] Squares, Despite Near-Linear Bis-terdentate L and Octahedral M

Self-assembly of 1:1:2 M^II (BF₄ )₂ (M=Zn or Fe), pyrazine-2,5-dicarbaldehyde (1) and 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine gave trimetallic triangle architectures rather than the anticipated tetrametallic [2×2] squares. Options for the nontrivial synthesis of 1 are considered, and synthetic details provided for both preferred routes. Rare cyclohelicate triangle architectures are observed for the pair of structurally characterized yellow-brown [Zn₃ L₃ ](BF₄ )₆ and dark green [Fe₃ L₃ ](BF₄ )₆ complexes of the neutral bis-terdentate Schiff base L. In order to form these pyrazine-edged triangles, the octahedral metal ions-with all 6 N-donors provided by the terdentate binding pockets of two L-are located 0.4-0.5 Å out of the plane of the bridging pyrazines, towards the center of the triangle. Density functional theory calculations confirm that simple particle counting entropic arguments, which predict triangles over squares, are correct here, with the triangles shown to be energetically favored over the corresponding squares. However, importantly, DFT analysis of these and related triangle versus square systems also show that vibrational contributions to entropy dominate and may significantly influence the preferred architecture, such that simple particle counting cannot in general be reliably employed to predict the observed architecture.

Controllable construction of half-sandwich octanuclear complexes based on pyridyl-substituted ligands with conjugated centers

Based on three tetradentate ligands with conjugated centers, seven half-sandwich octanuclear complexes were selectively obtained. Several subsequent structural conversions were also successfully conducted.

Synthesis of non-symmetric viologen-containing ditopic ligands and their Pd(ii)/Pt(ii)-directed self-assembly

An improved method for the synthesis of non-symmetric viologen-containing ditopic ligands is presented, as well as their Pd(ii)/Pt(ii)-directed self-assembly into metallacyclic receptors.

Self-assembly of dinuclear Pd(ii)/Pt(ii) metallacyclic receptors incorporating N-heterocyclic carbene complexes as corners

A series of new Pd(ii)/Pt(ii) metallacycles were self-assembled in water, using bipyridinium-based ligands and kinetically-labile metal centers having chelating N-heterocyclic carbenes.

Amplification of a metallacyclic receptor out of a dynamic combinatorial library

We present herein the Pt(ii)-directed self-assembly in water of a new conformationally flexible N-monoalkyl-4,4-bipyridinium-based ditopic ligand into a library of six different metallacyclic structures.

Rhenium(I)-Based Monocyclic and Bicyclic Phosphine Oxide-Coordinated Supramolecular Complexes

Neutral, flexible ditopic phosphine (P-P) or phosphine oxide (O=P-P=O) donors, rigid anionic bis-chelating oxygen donors, and Re₂(CO)₁₀ were used to assemble ten phosphine oxide (P=O)-donor-based neutral monocyclic M₂LL'-, bicyclic M₄L₂L″-, and bicyclic M₄LL'₂-type supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs). A soft ditopic phosphine donor was transformed into a hard ditopic phosphine oxide donor, during the formation of the cyclic complexes 1-3, 5-6, and 9-10. Complexes 4, 7, and 8 were obtained using a hard P=O donor ligand. These SCCs were characterized using elemental analysis, FTIR, NMR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The absorption properties of 1-8 were studied using absorption UV-vis spectroscopic methods, and the results were analyzed using theoretical calculations. The results revealed that the neutral P=O donor significantly influenced the photophysical properties by enhancing the absorption coefficient in the visible region.

Coinage Metal Pyrazolates [(3,5-(CF3)2Pz)M]3 (M = Au, Ag, Cu) as Buckycatchers

The synthesis and characterization of supramolecular assemblies {C60[M3]4}∞ consisting of C60 and coinage metal pyrazolates [M3] (i.e., [(3,5-(CF3)2Pz)M]3, where Pz = pyrazolate and M = Au, Ag, and Cu) are reported. {C60[Cu3]4}∞, {C60[Ag3]4}∞ and {C60[Au3]4}∞ form isomorphous crystals. The [M3] moieties adopt a concave conformation to complement the convex C60 surface. They exist as dimers of trimers (i.e., hexanuclear [M3]2 units) that are held together by three close M···M metallophilic interactions at 3.1580(17), 3.2046(7), and 3.2631(7) Å for copper, silver, and gold systems, respectively. The [M3]2 moieties surround each C60 in a tetrahedral fashion, while each [M3]2 is sandwiched by two C60 molecules to form a supramolecular 3D assembly.

Spheroid Metallacycles and Metallocavitands with Calixarene- and/or Cleft-Shaped Receptors on the Surface

Flexible hexatopic ligands, 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis(1H-naphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L(2)) and 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis(4,5-diphenylimidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L(3)), containing six neutral naphthanoimidazolyl and 4,5-diphenylimidazolyl N donors were synthesized and used to assemble M6L6L'-type [M = Re(CO)3, L = anionic angular rigid NN donors, and L' = flexible hexatopic N donors] spheroid metallacycles. These molecules with a diameter of ∼17 Å were obtained from Re2(CO)10, H-L (imidazole, benzimidazole, and naphthanoimidazole), and L' [1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis(benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L(1)), L(2), and L(3)] in a one-step process. Ligands L(2) and L(3) were characterized by elemental analysis, electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS), and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Metallacycles 1-5 were characterized by elemental analysis, ESI-TOF-MS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Molecules 1, 2, and 4 can be considered as metallocavitands and contain multiple solvent-accessible receptors, i.e., two metallocalix[3]arene units and six/four calix[4]arene-/cleft-shaped receptors, on the surface. Guests such as acetone molecules could be accommodated in the calix[4]arene/cleft-shaped receptor of the metallocavitands.
