Selective activation of alkanes by gas-phase metal ions

Experimental Reactivity of (MoO3)NO- (N = 1-21) Cluster Anions with C1-C4 Alkanes: A Simple Model to Predict the Reactivity with Methane

Metal oxide clusters with atomic oxygen radical anions are important model systems to study the mechanisms of activating and transforming very stable alkane molecules under ambient conditions. It is extremely challenging to characterize the activation and conversion of methane, the most stable alkane molecule, by metal oxide cluster anions due to the low reactivity of the anionic species. In this study, using a ship-lock type reactor that could be run at relatively high pressure conditions to provide a high number of collisions in ion-molecule reactions, the rate constants of the reactions between (MoO3)NO- (N = 1-21) cluster anions and the light alkanes (C1-C4) were measured under thermal collision conditions. The relationships among the reaction rates of different alkanes were obtained to establish a model to predict the low rate constants with methane from the high rate constants with C2-C4 alkanes. The model was tested by using available experimental results in literature. This study provides a new method to estimate the relatively low reactivity of atomic oxygen radical anions with methane on metal oxide clusters.

Light-driven C-H activation mediated by 2D transition metal dichalcogenides

C-H bond activation enables the facile synthesis of new chemicals. While C-H activation in short-chain alkanes has been widely investigated, it remains largely unexplored for long-chain organic molecules. Here, we report light-driven C-H activation in complex organic materials mediated by 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and the resultant solid-state synthesis of luminescent carbon dots in a spatially-resolved fashion. We unravel the efficient H adsorption and a lowered energy barrier of C-C coupling mediated by 2D TMDCs to promote C-H activation and carbon dots synthesis. Our results shed light on 2D materials for C-H activation in organic compounds for applications in organic chemistry, environmental remediation, and photonic materials.

Multistate Dynamics and Kinetics of CO2 Activation by Ta+ in the Gas Phase: Insights into Single-Atom Catalysis

The activation of carbon dioxide (CO2) by a transition-metal cation in the gas phase is a unique model system for understanding single-atom catalysis. The mechanism of such reactions is often attributed to a "two-state reactivity" model in which the high-energy barrier of a spin state correlating with ground-state reactants is avoided by intersystem crossing (ISC) to a different spin state with a lower barrier. However, such a "spin-forbidden" mechanism, along with the corresponding dynamics, has seldom been rigorously examined theoretically, due to the lack of global potential energy surfaces (PESs). In this work, we report full-dimensional PESs of the lowest-lying quintet, triplet, and singlet states of the TaCO2+ system, machine-learned from first-principles data. These PESs and the corresponding spin-orbit couplings enable us to provide an extensive theoretical characterization of the dynamics and kinetics of the reaction between the tantalum cation (Ta+) and CO2, which have recently been investigated experimentally at high collision energies using crossed beams and velocity map imaging, as well as at thermal energies using a selected-ion flow tube apparatus. The multistate quasi-classical trajectory simulations with surface hopping reproduce most of the measured product translational and angular distributions, shedding valuable light on the nonadiabatic reaction dynamics. The calculated rate coefficients from 200 to 600 K are also in good agreement with the latest experimental measurements. More importantly, these calculations revealed that the reaction is controlled by intersystem crossing, rather than potential barriers.

Dynamics of carbene formation in the reaction of methane with the tantalum cation in the gas phase

The controlled activation of methane has drawn significant attention throughout various disciplines over the last few decades. In gas-phase experiments, the use of model systems with reduced complexity compared to condensed-phase catalytic systems allows us to investigate the intrinsic reactivity of elementary reactions down to the atomic level. Methane is rather inert in chemical reactions, as the weakening or cleavage of a C-H bond is required to make use of methane as C1-building block. The simplest model system for transition-metal-based catalysts is a mono-atomic metal ion. Only a few atomic transition-metal cations activate methane at room temperature. One of the most efficient elements is tantalum, which forms a carbene and releases molecular hydrogen in the reaction with methane: Ta+ + CH4 → TaCH2+ + H2. The reaction takes place at room temperature due to efficient intersystem crossing from the quintet to the triplet surface, i.e., from the electronic ground state of the tantalum cation to the triplet ground state of the tantalum carbene. This multi-state reactivity is often seen for reactions involving transition-metal centres, but leads to their theoretical treatment being a challenge even today. Chemical reactions, or to be precise reactive collisions, are dynamic processes making their description even more of a challenge to experiment and theory alike. Experimental energy- and angle-differential cross sections allow us to probe the rearrangement of atoms during a reactive collision. By interpreting the scattering signatures, we gain insight into the atomistic mechanisms and can move beyond stationary descriptions. Here, we present a study combining collision energy dependent experimentally measured differential cross sections with ab initio calculations of the minimum energy pathway. Product ion velocity distributions were recorded using our crossed-beam velocity map imaging experiment dedicated to studying transition-metal ion molecule reactions. TaCH2+ velocity distributions reveal a significant degree of indirect dynamics. However, the scattering distributions also show signatures of rebound dynamics. We compare the present results to the oxygen transfer reaction between Ta+ and carbon dioxide, which we recently studied.

Ligand effect on Ru-centered species toward methane activation

Ligands have been known to profoundly affect the chemical transformations of methane, yet significant challenges remain in shedding light on the underlying mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that the conversion of methane can be regulated by Ru centered cations with a series of ligands (C, CH, CNH, CHCNH). Gas-phase experiments complemented by theoretical dynamic analysis were performed to explore the essences and principles governing the ligand effect. In contrast to the inert Ru+, [RuC]+, and [RuCNH]+ toward CH4, the dehydrogenation dominates the reaction of ligand-regulated systems [RuCH]+/CH4 and [RuCHCNH]+/CH4. In active cases, CH acts as active sites, and regulates the activation of CH4 assisted by the "seemingly inert" CNH ligand.

Size-dependent reactivity of VnO+ (n = 1-9) clusters with ethane

Cost-effective and readily accessible 3d transition metals (TMs) have been considered as promising candidates for alkane activation while 3d TMs especially the early TMs are usually not very reactive with light alkanes. In this study, the reactivity of Vn+ and VnO+ (n = 1-9) cluster cations towards ethane under thermal collision conditions has been investigated using mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations. Among Vn+ (n = 1-9) clusters, only V3-5+ can react with C2H6 to generate dehydrogenation products and the reaction rate constants are below 10-13 cm3 molecule-1 s-1. In contrast, the reaction rate constants for all VnO+ (n = 1-9) with C2H6 significantly increase by about 2-4 orders of magnitude. Theoretical analysis evidences that the addition of ligand O affects the charge distribution of the metal centers, resulting in a significant increase in the cluster reactivity. The analysis of frontier orbitals indicates that the agostic interaction determines the size-dependent reactivity of VnO+ cluster cations. This study provides a novel approach for improving the reactivity of early 3d TMs.

Low-Temperature Oxidation of Methane on Rutile TiO2(110): Identifying the Role of Surface Oxygen Species

Understanding the microkinetic mechanism underlying photocatalytic oxidative methane (CH4) conversion is of significant importance for the successful design of efficient catalysts. Herein, CH4 photooxidation has been systematically investigated on oxidized rutile(R)-TiO2(110) at 60 K. Under 355 nm irradiation, the C-H bond activation of CH4 is accomplished by the hole-trapped dangling OTi- center rather than the hole-trapped Ob- center via the Eley-Rideal reaction pathway, producing movable CH3• radicals. Subsequently, movable CH3• radicals encounter an O/OH species to form CH3O/CH3OH species, which could further dissociate into CH2O under irradiation. However, the majority of the CH3• radical intermediate is ejected into a vacuum, which may induce radical-mediated reactions under ambient conditions. The result not only advances our knowledge about inert C-H bond activation but also provides a deep insight into the mechanism of photocatalytic CH4 conversion, which will be helpful for the successful design of efficient catalysts.

A combination of infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) action spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations was employed to investigate the [M,C,2H]+ (M = Ru and Rh) species. These ions were formed by reacting laser ablated M+ ions with oxirane (ethylene oxide, c-C2H4O) in a room-temperature ion trap. IRMPD spectra for the Ru species exhibit one major band and two side bands, whereas spectra for the Rh species contain more distinct bands. Comparison with density functional theory (DFT), coupled-cluster (CCSD), and equation-of-motion spin-flip CCSD (EOM-SF-CCSD) calculations allows assignment of the [M,C,2H]+ structures. For the spectrum of [Ru,C,2H]+, a combination of HRuCH+ and RuCH2+ structures reproduces the observed spectrum at all levels of theory. The well-resolved spectrum of [Rh,C,2H]+ could not be assigned unambiguously to any calculated structure using DFT approaches. The EOM-SF-CCSD calculations showed that the ground-state surface has multireference electronic character, and symmetric carbenes in both the 1A1 and 3A2 states are needed to reproduce the observed spectrum.

IR spectroscopic characterization of 3d transition metal carbene cations, FeCH2+ and CoCH2+: periodic trends and a challenge for DFT approaches

A combination of IR multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) action spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations was employed to investigate the [M,C,2H]+ (M = Fe and Co) species. These were formed by reacting laser ablated M+ ions with oxirane (ethylene oxide, c-C2H4O) in a room temperature ion trap. IRMPD spectra for the Fe and Co species are very similar and exhibit one major band. Comparison with density functional theory (DFT) and coupled cluster with single and double excitations (CCSD) calculations allows assignment of the spectra to MCH2+ carbene structures. For these 3d transition metal systems, experimental IRMPD spectra compare relatively poorly with DFT calculated IR spectra, but CCSD calculated spectra are a much better match primarily because the M-C stretch gains significant intensity. The origins of this behavior are explored in some detail. The present results are also compared to previous results for the 4d and 5d congeners and the periodic trends in these structures are evaluated.

Ion mobility mass spectrometry uncovers regioselectivity in the carboxylate-assisted C-H activation of palladium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes

Carboxylate-assisted Pd-catalyzed C-H bond activation constitutes a mild and versatile synthetic tool to efficiently and selectively cleave inert C-H bonds. Herein, we demonstrate a simple method to experimentally evaluate both reactivity and selectivity in such systems using mass spectrometry (MS) methods. The N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) cations [(NHC)PdX]+, bearing as X- ligand bases commonly used to promote the C-H activation (carboxylates and bicarbonate), are generated in the gas-phase by ESI-MS. Their C-H bond activation at the N-bound groups of the NHC is then studied using Collision Induced Dissociation (CID) experiments. Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IM)-MS is exploited to identify a number of regioisomers associated with the distinctive site selective C-H activations. It is demonstrated that such C-H activation concomitant with acetic acid release occurs from a mixture of activated [(NHC-H)Pd(CH3CO2H)]+ and non-activated [(NHC)Pd(CH3CO2)]+ complexes. The identity of the X-type ligands (X = Cl-, carboxylates and bicarbonate) has a significant impact on the regioisomer branching ratio upon CID conditions. IM-MS in conjunction with a DFT mechanistic study is presented for the acetate-assisted C-H activation of the [(NHC)Pd(CH3CO2)]+ cation featuring butyl and aryl as N-donor groups.

Quantitative Aspects of Gas-Phase Metal Ion Chemistry: Conservation of Spin, Participation of f Orbitals, and C-H Activation and C-C Coupling

In this Featured Article, I reflect on over 40 years of guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry (GIBMS) studies involving atomic metal cations and their clusters throughout the periodic table. Studies that have considered the role of spin conservation (or lack thereof) are a primary focus with a quantitative assessment of the effects examined. A need for state-specific studies of heavier elements is noted, as is a more quantitative assessment of spin-orbit interactions in reactivity. Because GIBMS experiments explicitly evaluate the kinetic energy dependence of reactions over a wide range, several interesting and unusual observations are highlighted. More detailed studies of such unusual reaction events would be welcome. Activation of C-H bonds and ensuing C-C coupling events are reviewed, with future work encouraged. Finally, studies of lanthanides and actinides are examined with an eye on understanding the role of f orbitals in the chemistry, both as participants (or not) in the bonding and as sources/sinks of electron density. This area seems to be ripe for more quantitative experiments.

Probing adsorption of methane onto vanadium cluster cations via vibrational spectroscopy

Photofragment spectroscopy is used to measure the vibrational spectra of V2+(CH4)n (n = 1-4), V3+(CH4)n (n = 1-3), and Vx+(CH4) (x = 4-8) in the C-H stretching region (2550-3100 cm-1). Spectra are measured by monitoring loss of CH4. The experimental spectra are compared to simulations at the B3LYP+D3/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory to identify the geometry of the ions. Multi-reference configuration interaction with Davidson correction (MRCI+Q) calculations are also carried out on V2+ and V3+. The methane binding orientation in V2+(CH4)n (n = 1-4) evolves from η3 to η2 as more methane molecules are added. The IR spectra of metal-methane clusters can give information on the structure of metal clusters that may otherwise be hard to obtain from isolated clusters. For example, the V3+(CH4)n (n = 1-3) experimental spectra show an additional peak as the second and third methane molecules are added to V3+, which indicates that the metal atoms are not equivalent. The Vx+(CH4) show a larger red shift in the symmetric C-H stretch for larger clusters with x = 5-8 than for the small clusters with x = 2, 3, indicating increased covalency in the interaction of larger vanadium clusters with methane.

A general method for locating stationary points on the mixed-spin surface of spin-forbidden reaction with multiple spin states

Some chemical reactions proceed on multiple potential energy surfaces and are often accompanied by a change in spin multiplicity, being called spin-forbidden reactions, where the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects play a crucial role. In order to efficiently investigate spin-forbidden reactions with two spin states, Yang et al. [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 20, 4129-4136 (2018)] proposed a two-state spin-mixing (TSSM) model, where the SOC effects between the two spin states are simulated by a geometry-independent constant. Inspired by the TSSM model, we suggest a multiple-state spin-mixing (MSSM) model in this paper for the general case with any number of spin states, and its analytic first and second derivatives have been developed for locating stationary points on the mixed-spin potential energy surface and estimating thermochemical energies. To demonstrate the performance of the MSSM model, some spin-forbidden reactions involving 5d transition elements are calculated using the density functional theory (DFT), and the results are compared with the two-component relativistic ones. It is found that MSSM DFT and two-component DFT calculations may provide very similar stationary-point information on the lowest mixed-spin/spinor energy surface, including structures, vibrational frequencies, and zero-point energies. For the reactions containing saturated 5d elements, the reaction energies by MSSM DFT and two-component DFT agree very well within 3 kcal/mol. As for the two reactions OsO+ + CH4 → OOs(CH2)+ + H2 and W + CH4 → WCH2 + H2 involving unsaturated 5d elements, MSSM DFT may also yield good reaction energies of similar accuracy but with some counterexamples. Nevertheless, the energies may be remarkably improved by a posteriori single point energy calculations using two-component DFT at the MSSM DFT optimized geometries, and the maximum error of about 1 kcal/mol is almost independent of the SOC constant used. The MSSM method as well as the developed computer program provides an effective utility for studying spin-forbidden reactions.

Vibrational Spectroscopy and Structural Analysis of V+(C2H6)n Clusters (n = 1-4)

The vibrational structure and binding motifs of vanadium cation-ethane clusters, V⁺(C₂H₆)_n, for n = 1-4 are probed using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the C-H stretching region (2550-3100 cm^-1). Comparison of spectra to scaled harmonic frequency spectra obtained using density functional theory suggests that ethane exhibits two primary binding motifs when interacting with the vanadium cation: an end-on η² configuration and a side-on configuration. Determining the denticity of the side on isomer is complicated by the rotational motion of ethane, implying that structural analysis based solely on Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface minimizations is insufficient and that a more sophisticated vibrationally adiabatic approach is necessary to interpret spectra. The lower-energy side-on configuration predominates in smaller clusters, but the end-on configuration becomes important for larger clusters as it helps to maintain a roughly square-planar geometry about the central vanadium. Proximate C-H bonds exhibit elongation and large red-shifts when compared to bare ethane, particularly in the case of the side-on isomer, demonstrating initial effects of C-H bond activation, which are underestimated by scaled harmonic frequency calculations. Tagging several of the clusters with argon and nitrogen results in nontrivial effects. The high binding energy of N₂ can lead to the displacement of ethane from a side-on configuration into an end-on configuration. The presence of either one or two Ar or N₂ can impact the overall symmetry of the cluster, which can alter the potential energy surface for ethane rotation in the side-on isomer and may affect the accessibility of low-lying electronic excited states of V⁺.

Dynamics of the Oxygen Atom Transfer Reaction between Carbon Dioxide and the Tantalum Cation

The understanding of fundamental atomic-level processes often requires well-defined model systems. The oxygen atom transfer from CO₂ to a transition metal cation in the gas phase presents such a model system. We investigate the reaction of Ta⁺ + CO₂ for which the formation of TaO⁺ is highly efficient and attributed to multistate reactivity. Here, we study the atomistic dynamics of the oxygen atom transfer reaction by recording experimental energy and angle differential cross sections by crossed beam velocity map imaging supported by ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Product ion velocity distributions are dominated by signatures for indirect dynamics, despite the reaction being highly exothermic. Product kinetic energy distributions show little dependence on additional collision energy even with only four atoms involved, which hints at dynamical trapping behind a submerged barrier.

Conformational and state-specific effects in reactions of 2,3-dibromobutadiene with Coulomb-crystallized calcium ions

Recent advances in experimental methodology enabled studies of the quantum-state- and conformational dependence of chemical reactions under precisely controlled conditions in the gas phase. Here, we generated samples of selected gauche and s-trans 2,3-dibromobutadiene (DBB) by electrostatic deflection in a molecular beam and studied their reaction with Coulomb crystals of laser-cooled Ca⁺ ions in an ion trap. The rate coefficients for the total reaction were found to strongly depend on both the conformation of DBB and the electronic state of Ca⁺. In the (4p)²P_1/2 and (3d)²D_3/2 excited states of Ca⁺, the reaction is capture-limited and faster for the gauche conformer due to long-range ion-dipole interactions. In the (4s)²S_1/2 ground state of Ca⁺, the reaction rate for s-trans DBB still conforms with the capture limit, while that for gauche DBB is strongly suppressed. The experimental observations were analysed with the help of adiabatic capture theory, ab initio calculations and reactive molecular dynamics simulations on a machine-learned full-dimensional potential energy surface of the system. The theory yields near-quantitative agreement for s-trans-DBB, but overestimates the reactivity of the gauche-conformer compared to the experiment. The present study points to the important role of molecular geometry even in strongly reactive exothermic systems and illustrates striking differences in the reactivity of individual conformers in gas-phase ion-molecule reactions.

Weak Interactions Initiate C-H and C-C Bond Dissociation of Ethane on Nbn + Clusters

The conversion of ethane into value-added chemicals under ambient conditions has attracted much attention but the mechanisms remain not fully understood. Here we report a study on the reaction of ethane with thermalized Nb_n ⁺ clusters based on a multiple-ion laminar flow tube reactor combined with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (MIFT-TQMS). It is found that ethane reacts with Nb_n ⁺ clusters to form both products of dehydrogenation and methane-removal (odd-carbon products). Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we studied the reaction mechanisms of the C-C bond activation and C-H bond cleavage on the Nb_n ⁺ clusters. It is unveiled that hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) initiates the reaction process, giving rise to the formation of Nb-C bonds and an elongated C-C distance in the HNb_n ⁺ CH₂ CH₃ motif. Subsequent reactions allow for C-C bond activation and a competitive HAT process which is associated with CH₄ removal or H₂ release, resulting in the production of the observed carbides.

Introducing Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry to Identify Site-Selective C-H Bond Activation in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Metal Complexes

The activation of C-H bonds in a selective manner still constitutes a major challenge from a synthetic point of view; thus, it remains an active area of fundamental and applied research. Herein, we introduce ion mobility spectrometry mass spectrometry-based (IM-MS) approaches to uncover site-selective C-H bond activation in a series of metal complexes of general formula [(NHC)LMCl]⁺ (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene; L = pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*) or p-cymene; M = Pd, Ru, and Ir). The C-H bond activation at the N-bound groups of the NHC ligand is promoted upon collision induced dissociation (CID). The identification of the resulting [(NHC-H)LM]⁺ isomers relies on the distinctive topology that such cyclometalated isomers adopt upon site-selective C-H bond activation. Such topological differences can be reliably evidenced as different mobility peaks in their respective CID-IM mass spectra. Alternative isomers are also identified via dehydrogenation at the Cp*/p-cymene (L) ligands to afford [(NHC)(L-H)M]⁺. The fragmentation of the ion mobility-resolved peaks is also investigated by CID-IM-CID. It enables the assignment of mobility peaks to the specific isomers formed from C(sp²)-H or C(sp³)-H bond activation and distinguishes them from the Cp*/p-cymene (L) dehydrogenation isomers. The conformational change of the NHC ligands upon C-H bond activation, concomitant with cyclometalation, is also discussed on the basis of the estimated collision cross section (CCS). A unique conformation change of the pyrene-tagged NHC members is identified that involves the reorientation of the NHC ring accompanied by a folding of the pyrene moiety.

Photocatalytic Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane for Selective Propene Production with TiO2

Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) as an exothermic process is a promising method to produce propene (C₃H₆) with lower energy consumption in chemical industry. However, the selectivity of the C₃H₆ product is always poor because of overoxidation. Herein, the ODHP reaction into C₃H₆ on a model rutile(R)-TiO₂(110) surface at low temperature via photocatalysis has been realized successfully. The results illustrate that photocatalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (C₃H₈) into C₃H₆ can occur efficiently on R-TiO₂(110) at 90 K via a stepwise manner, in which the initial C-H cleavage occurs via the hole coupled C-H bond cleavage pathway followed by a radical mediated C-H cleavage to the C₃H₆ product. An exceptional selectivity of ∼90% for C₃H₆ production is achieved at about 13% propane conversion. The mechanistic model constructed in this study not only advances our understanding of C-H bond activation but also provides a new pathway for highly selective ODHP into C₃H₆ under mild conditions.

CH4 activation by PtX+ (X = F, Cl, Br, I)

Reactions of PtX⁺ (X = F, Cl, Br, I) with methane have been investigated at the density functional theory (DFT) level. These reactions take place more easily along the low-spin potential energy surface. For HX (X = F, Cl, Br, I) elimination, the formal oxidation state of the metal ion appears to be conserved, and the importance of this reaction channel decreases in going as the sequence: X = F, Cl, Br, I. A reversed trend is observed in the loss of H₂ for X = F, Cl, Br, while it is not favorable for PtI⁺ in the loss of either HI or H₂. For HX eliminations, the transfer form of H is from proton to atom, last to hydride, and the mechanisms are from PCET to HAT, last to HT for the sequence of X = F, Cl, Br, I. One reason is mainly due to the electronegativity of halogens. Otherwise, the mechanisms of HX eliminations also can be explained by the analysis of Frontier Molecular Orbitals. While for the loss of H₂, the transfer of H is in the form of hydride for all the X ligands. Noncovalent interactions analysis also can be explained the reaction mechanisms.

Unmasking the Iron-Oxo Bond of the [(Ligand)Fe-OIAr]2+/+ Complexes

ArIO (ArI = 2-(^tBuSO₂)C₆H₄I) is an oxidant used to oxidize Fe^II species to their Fe^IV-oxo state, enabling hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) and oxygen-atom transfer (OAT) reactions at low energy barriers. ArIO, as a ligand, generates masked Feⁿ═O species of the type Fe^(n-2)-OIAr. Herein, we used gas-phase ion-molecule reactions and DFT calculations to explore the properties of masked iron-oxo species and to understand their unmasking mechanisms. The theory shows that the I-O bond cleavage in [(TPA)Fe^IVO(ArIO)]²⁺ (1²⁺, TPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine)) is highly endothermic; therefore, it can be achieved only in collision-induced dissociation of 1²⁺ leading to the unmasked iron(VI) dioxo complex. The reduction of 1²⁺ by HAT leads to [(TPA)Fe^IIIOH(ArIO)]²⁺ with a reduced energy demand for the I-O bond cleavage but is, however, still endothermic. The exothermic unmasking of the Fe═O bond is predicted after one-electron reduction of 1²⁺ or after OAT reactivity. The latter leads to the 4e^- oxidation of unsaturated hydrocarbons: The initial OAT from [(TPA)Fe^IVO(ArIO)]²⁺ leads to the epoxidation of an alkene and triggers the unmasking of the second Fe═O bond still within one collisional complex. The second oxidation step starts with HAT from a C-H bond and follows with the rebound of the C-radical and the OH group. The process starting with the one-electron reduction could be studied with [(TQA)Fe^IVO(ArIO)]²⁺ (2²⁺, TQA = tris(2-quinolylmethyl)amine)) because it has a sufficient electron affinity for electron transfer with alkenes. Accordingly, the reaction of 2²⁺ with 2-carene leads to [(TQA)Fe^IIIO(ArIO)]²⁺ that exothermically eliminates ArI and unmasks the reactive Fe^V-dioxo species.

Pyrolysis of Mass-Selected (V2O5)NO− (N = 1−6) Clusters in a High-Temperature Linear Ion Trap Reactor

A high-temperature linear ion trap that can stably run up to 873 K was newly designed and installed into a homemade reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer coupled with a laser ablation cluster source and a quadrupole mass filter. The instrument was used to study the pyrolysis behavior of mass-selected (V2O5) NO− ( N = 1−6) cluster anions and the dissociation channels were clarified with atomistic precision. Similar to the dissociation behavior of the heated metal oxide cluster cations reported in literature, the desorption of either atomic oxygen atom or molecular O2 prevailed for the (V2O5) NO− clusters with N = 2−5 at 873 K. However, novel dissociation channels involving fragmentation of (V2O5) NO− to small-sized V xO y− anions concurrent with the release of neutral vanadium oxide species were identified for the clusters with N = 3−6. Significant variations of branching ratios for different dissociation channels were observed as a function of cluster size. The kinetic studies indicate that the dissociation rates of (V2O5) NO− monotonically increased with the increase of cluster size. The internal energies carried by the (V2O5) NO− clusters at 873 K as well as the energetics data for dissociation channels have been theoretically calculated to rationalize the experimental observations. The decomposition behavior of vanadium oxide clusters from this study can provide new insights into the pyrolysis mechanism of metal oxide nanoparticles that are widely used in high temperature catalysis.

IR Spectroscopic Characterization of Methane Adsorption on Copper Clusters Cun+ (n = 2-4)

The interaction of CH₄ with cationic copper clusters has been studied with infrared-multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy. Cu_n⁺ (n = 2-4) formed by laser ablation were reacted with CH₄. The formed complexes were irradiated with the IR light of the free-electron laser for intracavity experiments (FELICE), and the fragments were mass-analyzed with a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The structures of the Cu_n⁺-CH₄ complexes are assigned on the basis of comparison between the resulting IRMPD spectra to spectra of different isomers calculated with density functional theory (DFT). For all sizes n, the structure found is one with molecularly adsorbed CH₄. Only slight deformations of the CH₄ molecule have been identified upon adsorption on the clusters, which results in redshifts of the spectroscopic bands. This deformation can be explained by charge transfer from the cluster to the adsorbed methane molecule.

C-H Bond Activation and C-C Coupling of Methane on a Single Cationic Platinum Center: A Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study

We spectroscopically investigated the activation products resulting from reacting one and multiple methane molecules with Pt⁺ ions. Pt⁺ ions were formed by laser ablation of a metal target and were cooled to the electronic ground state in a supersonic expansion. The ions were then transferred to a room temperature ion trap, where they were reacted with methane at various partial pressures in an argon buffer gas. Product masses observed were [Pt,C,2H]⁺, [Pt,2C,4H]⁺, [Pt,4C,8H]⁺, and [Pt,2C,O,6H]⁺, which were mass-isolated and characterized using infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy employing the free electron laser for intra-cavity experiments (FELICE). The spectra for [Pt,2C,4H]⁺ and [Pt,4C,8H]⁺ have several well-defined bands and, when compared to density functional theory-calculated spectra for several possible product structures, lead to unambiguous assignments to species with ethene ligands, proving Pt⁺-mediated C–C coupling involving up to four methane molecules. These findings contrast with earlier experiments where Pt⁺ ions were reacted in a flow-tube type reaction channel at significantly higher pressures of helium buffer gas, resulting in the formation of a Pt(CH₃)₂⁺ product. Our DFT calculations show a reaction barrier of +0.16 eV relative to the PtCH₂⁺ + CH₄ reactants that are required for C–C coupling. The different outcomes in the two experiments suggest that the higher pressure in the earlier work could kinetically trap the dimethyl product, whereas the lower pressure and longer residence times in the ion trap permit the reaction to proceed, resulting in ethene formation and dihydrogen elimination.

Methane is reacted with gas-phase atomic platinum cations in a room temperature ion trap, and the resulting product ions are characterized using IR light of the Free Electron Laser for Intra-Cavity Experiments (FELICE). We observed the formation of PtCH₂⁺, Pt(ethene)⁺, and Pt(ethene)₂⁺. These findings demonstrate the C−H bond activation and C−C coupling of methane molecules.

Ion spectroscopy in methane activation

This review is devoted to ion spectroscopy studies of complexes relevant for the understanding of methane activation with metal ions and clusters. Methane activation starts with the formation of a complex with a metal ion. The degree of the interaction between an intact methane molecule and the ion can be monitored by the perturbations of C-H stretch vibrations in the methane molecule. Binding mediated by the electrostatic interaction results in a η³ type coordination of methane. In contrast, binding governed by orbital interactions results in a η² type coordination of methane. We further review the spectroscopic characterization of activation products of metal-methane reactions, such as the metal-carbene and carbyne products resulting from the interaction of selected 5d metals with methane. The focus of recent research in the field has shifted towards the investigation of interactions between methane and metal clusters. We show examples highlighting that metal clusters can be more reactive in methane activation reactions.

Sulfonyl Nitrene and Amidyl Radical: Structure and Reactivity

Photocatalytic generation of nitrenes and radicals can be used to tune or even control their reactivity. Photocatalytic activation of sulfonyl azides leads to the elimination of N₂ and the resulting reactive species initiate C−H activations and amide formation reactions. Here, we present reactive radicals that are generated from sulfonyl azides: sulfonyl nitrene radical anion, sulfonyl nitrene and sulfonyl amidyl radical, and test their gas phase reactivity in C−H activation reactions. The sulfonyl nitrene radical anion is the least reactive and its reactivity is governed by the proton coupled electron transfer mechanism. In contrast, sulfonyl nitrene and sulfonyl amidyl radicals react via hydrogen atom transfer pathways. These reactivities and detailed characterization of the radicals with vibrational spectroscopy and with DFT calculations provide information necessary for taking control over the reactivity of these intermediates.

Dinitrogen Activation by Dihydrogen and Quaternary Cluster Anions AuNbBO-: Nb- and B-Mediated N2 Activation and Au-Assisted Nitrogen Transfer

Nitrogen fixation and hydrogenation are important issues in chemistry and industry. Herein, we used mass spectrometry and quantum chemical calculations to identify the quaternary AuNbBO^- anions that can efficiently activate N₂ and H₂ to form imido (or amido) units in the products AuNbBON₂H₂^- under thermal collision conditions. In these reactions, Nb and B atoms work in synergy to dissociate N₂ and the Au atom acts as a reducing agent, which facilitates the removal of one activated N atom for the following hydrogenation process; generation of three-centered, two-electron bonds facilitates N₂ activation and N transformation. This study shows that the noble metal-assisted early transition metal boronyl cluster is highly reactive to facilitate thermal N-N and H-H bond cleavage, and NH (or NH₂) and NBO units, which are important intermediates in N₂ hydrogenation reactions, are formed. These findings may provide insight into the design of new catalysts for the synthesis of NH₃ from N₂ and H₂.

Identification of a Two‐Coordinate Iron(I)–Oxalate Complex

Exotic oxidation states of the first‐row transition metals have recently attracted much interest. In order to investigate the oxidation states of a series of iron–oxalate complexes, an aqueous solution of iron(III) nitrate and oxalic acid was studied by infrared free liquid matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization as well as ionspray mass spectrometry. Here, we show that iron is not only detected in its common oxidation states +II and +III, but also in its unusual oxidation state +I, detectable in both positive‐ion and in negative‐ion modes, respectively. Vibrational spectra of the gas phase anionic iron oxalate complexes [Fe^III(C₂O₄)₂]⁻, [Fe^II(C₂O₄)CO₂]⁻, and [Fe^I(C₂O₄)]⁻ were measured by means of infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and their structures were assigned by comparison to anharmonic vibrational spectra based on second‐order perturbation theory.

Experiment and Theory Clarify: Sc+ Receives One Oxygen Atom from SO2 to Form ScO+, which Proves to be a Catalyst for the Hidden Oxygen-Exchange with SO2

Using Fourier‐transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, it was experimentally determined that Sc⁺ in the highly diluted gas phase reacts with SO₂ to form ScO⁺ and SO. By ¹⁸O labeling, ScO⁺ was shown to play the role of a catalyst when further reacting with SO₂ in a Mars‐van Krevelen‐like (MvK) oxygen exchange process, where a solid catalyst actively reacts with the substrate but emerges apparently unchanged at the end of the cycle. High‐level quantum chemical calculations confirmed that the multi‐step process to form ScO⁺ and SO is exoergic and that all intermediates and transition states in between are located energetically below the entrance level. The reaction starts from the triplet surface; although three spin‐crossing points with minimal energy have been identified by computational means, there is no evidence that a two‐state scenario is involved in the course of the reaction, by which the reactants could switch from the triplet to the singlet surface and back. Pivotal to the oxygen exchange reaction of ScO⁺ with SO₂ is the occurrence of a highly symmetric four‐membered cyclic intermediate by which two oxygen atoms become equivalent.

Advancing Inorganic Coordination Chemistry by Spectroscopy of Isolated Molecules: Methods and Applications

A unique feature of the work carried out in the Collaborative Research Center 3MET continues to be its emphasis on innovative, advanced experimental methods which hyphenate mass-selection with further analytical tools such as laser spectroscopy for the study of isolated molecular ions. This allows to probe the intrinsic properties of the species of interest free of perturbing solvent or matrix effects. This review explains these methods and uses examples from past and ongoing 3MET studies of specific classes of multicenter metal complexes to illustrate how coordination chemistry can be advanced by applying them. As a corollary, we will show how the challenges involved in providing well-defined, for example monoisomeric, samples of the molecular ions have helped to further improve the methods themselves thus also making them applicable to many other areas of chemistry.

ORGANOMETALLIC GAS-PHASE ION CHEMISTRY AND CATALYSIS: INSIGHTS INTO THE USE OF METAL CATALYSTS TO PROMOTE SELECTIVITY IN THE REACTIONS OF CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES

Carboxylic acids are valuable organic substrates as they are widely available, easy to handle, and exhibit structural and functional variety. While they are used in many standard synthetic protocols, over the past two decades numerous studies have explored new modes of metal-mediated reactivity of carboxylic acids and their derivatives. Mass spectrometry-based studies can provide fundamental mechanistic insights into these new modes of reactivity. Here gas-phase models for the following catalytic transformations of carboxylic acids and their derivatives are reviewed: protodecarboxylation; dehydration; decarbonylation; reaction as coordinated bases in C-H bond activation; remote functionalization and decarboxylative C-C bond coupling. In each case the catalytic problem is defined, insights from gas-phase studies are highlighted, comparisons with condensed-phase systems are made and perspectives are reached. Finally, the potential role for mechanistic studies that integrate both gas- and condensed-phase studies is highlighted by recent studies on the discovery of new catalysts for the selective decomposition of formic acid and the invention of the new extrusion-insertion class of reactions for the synthesis of amides, thioamides, and amidines. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Cyclotrimerization of Acetylene under Thermal Conditions: Gas-Phase Kinetics of V+ and Fe+ + C2H2

The kinetics of successive reactions of acetylene (C₂H₂) initiated on either vanadium or iron atomic cations have been investigated under thermal conditions using the variable-ion source and temperature-adjustable selected-ion flow tube apparatus. Consistent with the literature results, the reaction of Fe⁺ + C₂H₂ primarily yields Fe⁺(m/z = (C₂H₂)₃); however, analysis via quantum chemical calculations and statistical modeling shows that the mechanism does not form benzene upon the third acetylene addition. The kinetics are more consistent with successive addition of three acetylene molecules, yielding Fe⁺(C₂H₂)₃, followed by an addition of a fourth acetylene molecule, initiating cyclotrimerization, yielding either Fe⁺(C₂H₂) + neutral benzene or Fe⁺(Bz) + acetylene, where Bz is a benzene ligand. In contrast, the reaction of V⁺ + C₂H₂ yields products via successive associations V⁺(m/z = (C₂H₂)_n) either with or without a bimolecular step involving loss of one H₂ and V⁺C₂(m/z = (C₂H₂)_m), where n and m extend at least up to 11 under conditions of 0.32 Torr at 300 K. Stabilized V⁺(Bz) is not a significant intermediate in the association mechanism. We propose a plausible mechanism for the generation of neutral benzene in this reaction and compare with the Fe⁺ results. The reaction steps that produce benzene result in turnover of the single-atom catalyst, and the large hydrocarbons produced that remain associated to the catalyst are proposed to be polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Quadruple C-H Bond Activations of Methane by Dinuclear Rhodium Carbide Cation [Rh2C3]. JACS AU 2021;1:1631-1638. [PMID: 34723266 PMCID: PMC8549038 DOI: 10.1021/jacsau.1c00265]

The structure of the [Rh₂C₃]⁺ ion and its reaction with CH₄ in the gas phase have been studied by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and mass spectrometry in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. The [Rh₂C₃]⁺ ion is characterized to have an unsymmetrical linear [Rh-C-C-C-Rh]⁺ structure existing in two nearly isoenergetic spin states. The [Rh₂C₃]⁺ ion reacts with CH₄ at room temperature to form [Rh₂C]⁺ + C₃H₄ and [Rh₂C₂H₂]⁺ + C₂H₂ as the major products. In addition to the [Rh₂C]⁺ ion, the [Rh₂ ¹³C]⁺ ion is formed at about one-half of the [Rh₂C]⁺ intensity when the isotopic-labeled ¹³CH₄ sample is used. The production of [Rh₂ ¹³C]⁺ indicates that the linear C₃ moiety of [Rh₂C₃]⁺ can be replaced by the bare carbon atom of methane with all four C-H bonds being activated. The calculations suggest that the overall reactions are thermodynamically exothermic, and that the two Rh centers are the reactive sites for C-H bond activation and hydrogen atom transfer reactions.

Methane Activation by (MoO3 )5 O- Cluster Anions: The Importance of Orbital Orientation

The reactivity of the molybdenum oxide cluster anion (MoO₃ )₅ O^- , bearing an unpaired electron at a bridging oxygen atom (O_b ^.- ), towards methane under thermal collision conditions has been studied by mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations. This reaction follows the mechanism of hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and is facilitated by the O_b ^.- radical center. The reactivity of (MoO₃ )₅ O^- can be traced back to the appropriate orientation of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) that is essentially the 2p orbital of the O_b ^.- atom. This study not only makes up the blank of thermal methane activation by the O_b ^.- radical on negatively charged clusters but also yields new insights into methane activation by the atomic oxygen radical anions.

Conversion of carbon dioxide to a novel molecule NCNBO- mediated by NbBN2- anions at room temperature

The activation of carbon dioxide (CO₂) mediated by NbBN₂^- cluster anions under the conditions of thermal collision has been investigated by time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with density functional theory calculations. Two CO double bonds in the CO₂ molecule are completely broken and two C-N bonds are further generated to form the novel molecule NCNBO^-. To the best of our knowledge, this new molecule is synthesized and reported for the first time. In addition, one oxygen atom transfer channel produces another product, NbBN₂O^-. Both of the Nb and B atoms in NbBN₂^- donate electrons to reduce CO₂, and the carbon atom originating from CO₂ serves as an electron reservoir. The reaction of NbB^- with N₂ was also investigated theoretically, and the formation of NbBN₂^- from this reaction is thermodynamically and kinetically quite favorable, indicating that NCNBO^- might be produced from the coupling of N₂ and CO₂ mediated by NbB^- anions.

A ship-lock-type reactor for ion-molecule reactions of mass-selected ions under high-pressure conditions

A ship-lock-type reactor has been developed to study ion-molecule reactions of mass-selected ions under high-pressure conditions. Neutral gas molecules can be confined in the reactor by controlling two electromagnet valves to close both the inlet and the outlet of the reactor. Gas-phase ions can be trapped in an ion funnel trap installed in the reactor and interacted with a high-pressure (up to 1000 Pa) reactant gas for a period of time (up to 1 s). The reactions of mass-selected V₂O₆ ^- with CH₄ and n-C₄H₁₀ and mass-selected Au⁺ with n-C₇H₁₆ were investigated to evaluate the performance of the reactor. The hydrogen atom abstraction product V₂O₆H^- was observed for the reaction of V₂O₆ ^- with CH₄, the rate constant was measured to be (1.9 ± 0.4) × 10^-16 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1, and the kinetic isotope effect value was determined to be 5.4 ± 1.1. Furthermore, the detection limit of n-C₇H₁₆ with 1-min measurements was determined to be (19 ± 2) pptv, which is significantly lower than those in previous studies. These results indicate that the current apparatus is a prospective for the study of slow ion-molecule reactions and the detection of trace amounts of gas species, such as volatile organic compounds.

Bonding, Thermodynamics, and Dissociation Dynamics of NiO+ and NiS+ Determined by Photofragment Imaging and Theory

We use photofragment ion imaging and ab initio calculations to determine the bond strength and photodissociation dynamics of the nickel oxide (NiO⁺) and nickel sulfide (NiS⁺) cations. NiO⁺ photodissociates broadly from 20350 to 32000 cm^-1, forming ground state products Ni⁺(²D) + O(³P) below ∼29000 cm^-1. Above this energy, Ni⁺(⁴F) + O(³P) products become accessible and dominate over the ground state channel. In certain images, product spin-orbit levels are resolved, and spin-orbit propensities are determined. Image anisotropy and the results of MRCI calculations suggest NiO⁺ photodissociates via a 3 ⁴Σ^- ← X ⁴Σ^- transition above the Ni⁺(⁴F) threshold and via 3 ⁴Σ^-, 2 ⁴Σ^-, and/or 2 ⁴Π and 3 ⁴Π excited states below the ⁴F threshold. The photodissociation spectrum of NiS⁺ from 19900 to 23200 cm^-1 is highly structured, with ∼12 distinct vibronic peaks, each containing underlying substructure. Above 21600 cm^-1, the Ni⁺(²D_5/2) + S(³P) and Ni⁺(²D_3/2) + S(³P) product spin-orbit channels compete, with a branching ratio of ∼2:1. At lower energy, Ni⁺(²D_5/2) is formed exclusively, and S(³P₂) and S(³P₁) spin-orbit channels are resolved. MRCI calculations predict the ground state of NiS⁺ to be one of two nearly degenerate states, the 1 ⁴Σ^- and 1 ⁴Δ. Based on images and spectra, the ground state of NiS⁺ is assigned as ⁴Δ_7/2, with the 1 ⁴Σ_3/2^- and 1 ⁴Σ_1/2^- states 81 ± 30 and 166 ± 50 cm^-1 higher in energy, respectively. The majority of the photodissociation spectrum is assigned to transitions from the 1 ⁴Δ state to two overlapping, predissociative excited ⁴Δ states. Our D₀ measurements for NiO⁺ (D₀ = 244.6 ± 2.4 kJ/mol) and NiS⁺ (D₀ = 240.3 ± 1.4 kJ/mol) are more precise and closer to each other than previously reported values. Finally, using a recent measurement of D₀(NiS), we derive a more precise value for IE (NiS): 8.80 ± 0.02 eV (849 ± 1.7 kJ/mol).

Modular Ion Mobility Calibrants for Organometallic Anions Based on Tetraorganylborate Salts

Organometallics are widely used in catalysis and synthesis. Their analysis relies heavily on mass spectrometric methods, among which traveling-wave ion mobility spectrometry (TWIMS) has gained increasing importance. Collision cross sections (CCS) obtainable by TWIMS significantly aid the structural characterization of ions in the gas phase, but for organometallics, their accuracy has been limited by the lack of appropriate calibrants. Here, we propose tetraorganylborates and their alkali-metal bound oligomers [M_n-1(BR₄)_n]^- (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; R = aryl, Et; n = 1-6) as calibrants for electrospray ionization (ESI) TWIMS. These species chemically resemble typical organometallics and readily form upon negative-ion mode ESI of solutions of alkali-metal tetraorganylborates. By combining different tetraorganylborate salts, we have generated a large number of anions in a modular manner and determined their CCS values by drift-tube ion mobility spectrometry (DTIMS) (^DTCCS_He = 81-585, ^DTCCS_N2 = 130-704 Ų). In proof-of-concept experiments, we then applied these ^DTCCS values to the calibration of a TWIMS instrument and analyzed phenylcuprate and argentate anions, [Li_n-1M_nPh_2n]^- and [M_nPh_n+1]^- (M = Cu, Ag), as prototypical reactive organometallics. The ^TWCCS_N2 values derived from TWIMS measurements are in excellent agreement with those determined by DTIMS (<2% relative difference), demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed calibration scheme. Moreover, we used theoretical methods to predict the structures and CCS values of the anions considered. These predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results and give further insight into the trends governing the assembly of tetraorganylborate, cuprate, and argentate oligomers.

The relativistic effects on the methane activation by gold(I) cations

The reactivity of gold has been investigated for a long time. Here, we performed an in-depth analysis of relativistic effects over the chemical kinetic properties of elementary reactions associated with methane activation by gold(I) cations, CH₄ + Au⁺ ↔ AuCH₂ ⁺ + H₂. The global reaction is modeled as a two-step process, CH₄ + Au⁺ ↔ HAuCH₃ ⁺ ↔ AuCH₂ ⁺ + H₂. Moreover, the barrierless dissociation of the initial adduct between reactants, AuCH₄ ⁺, is discussed as well. Higher-order relativistic treatments are used to provide corrections beyond the commonly considered scalar effects of relativistic effective core potentials (RECPs). Although the scalar relativistic contributions predominate, lowering the forward barrier heights by 48.4 and 36.1 kcal mol^-1, the spin-orbit coupling effect can still provide additional reductions of these forward barrier heights by as much as 9% (1.0 and 2.2 kcal mol^-1). The global reaction proceeds rapidly at low temperatures to the intermediate attained after the first hydrogen transfer, HAuCH₃ ⁺. The relativistic corrections beyond the ones from RECPs are still able to double the rate constant of the CH₄ + Au⁺ → HAuCH₃ ⁺ process at 300 K, while the reverse reaction becomes five times slower. The formation of global products from this intermediate only becomes significant at much higher temperatures (∼1500 K upward). The scalar relativistic contributions decrease the dissociation energy of the initial adduct, AuCH₄ ⁺, into the global products by 105.8 kcal mol^-1, while the spin-orbit effect provides an extra lowering of 1.8 kcal mol^-1.

High-Level ab Initio Predictions for the Ionization Energies, Bond Dissociation Energies, and Heats of Formation of Vanadium Methylidene, Vanadium Methyl Species, and Their Cations (VCH2/VCH2+, VCH3/VCH3+)

The ionization energies of VCH₂ and VCH₃, the various 0 K bond dissociation energies (D₀s) in their neutrals and cations, and their respective heats of formation at 0 and 298 K are computed by the single-reference, wave function-based CCSDTQ/CBS procedure. The core of the composite method is the approximation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit at the coupled cluster (CC) level which includes up to full quadruple excitations. The zero-point vibrational energy, core-valence correlation, spin-orbit coupling, and scalar relativistic effects have their contributions incorporated in an additive manner. For the species in the current study, this protocol requires geometry optimizations and harmonic frequency calculations practically no higher than the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pwCVTZ and CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ levels, respectively. The present calculations successfully predict D₀(V⁺-CH₃) = 2.126 eV and D₀(V⁺-CH₂) = 3.298 eV in remarkable agreement with the data recently measured by a spin-orbit state selected V⁺ + CH₄ collision experiment (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2021, 23, 273-286). The good accord encourages the use of CCSDTQ/CBS protocol in thermochemical predictions of various feasible product channels identified in methane activation by transition metal species.

Charge frustration in ligand design and functional group transfer

Molecules with different resonance structures of similar importance, such as heterocumulenes and mesoionics, are prominent in many applications of chemistry, including 'click chemistry', photochemistry, switching and sensing. In coordination chemistry, similar chameleonic/schizophrenic entities are referred to as ambidentate/ambiphilic or cooperative ligands. Examples of these had remained, for a long time, limited to a handful of archetypal compounds that were mere curiosities. In this Review, we describe ambiphilicity - or, rather, 'charge frustration' - as a general guiding principle for ligand design and functional group transfer. We first give a historical account of organic zwitterions and discuss their electronic structures and applications. Our discussion then focuses on zwitterionic ligands and their metal complexes, such as those of ylidic and redox-active ligands. Finally, we present new approaches to single-atom transfer using cumulated small molecules and outline emerging areas, such as bond activation and stable donor-acceptor ligand systems for reversible 1e^- chemistry or switching.

Structures of M+(CH4)n (M = Ti, V) Based on Vibrational Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory

Photofragment spectroscopy is used to measure the vibrational spectra of M⁺(CH₄)(Ar) and M⁺(CH₄)_n (M = Ti, V; n = 1-4) in the C-H stretching region (2550-3100 cm^-1). Spectra were measured by monitoring the loss of Ar from M⁺(CH₄)(Ar) and loss of CH₄ from the larger clusters. The experimental spectra are then compared to simulations done at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory to identify the structures of the ions. The spectra all have a peak near 2800 cm^-1 due to the symmetric C-H stretch of the hydrogens adjacent to the metal. Some complexes also have a smaller peak due to the corresponding antisymmetric stretch. Most complexes also have a peak near 3000 cm^-1 due to the C-H stretch of hydrogens pointing away from the metal. The symmetric proximate C-H stretches of M⁺(CH₄)(Ar) to M⁺(CH₄)₄ are red-shifted from the symmetric stretch in bare CH₄ by 149, 152, 128, and 107 cm^-1 for the titanium complexes and 164, 175, 158, and 146 cm^-1, respectively, for the vanadium complexes. In M⁺(CH₄)(Ar) (M = Ti, V), the heavy atoms are collinear. Ti⁺(CH₄)(Ar) has η³ methane hydrogen coordination (∠M-C-H = 180°), while V⁺(CH₄)(Ar) has η² (∠M-C-H = 124°). The n = 2 complexes have C-M-C linear. Ti⁺(CH₄)₂ has C_2h symmetry with η³ CH₄ while V⁺(CH₄)₂ has methane coordination intermediate between η² and η³ (∠M-C-H = 156°). Both the M⁺(CH₄)₃ (M = Ti, V) complexes have C_2v symmetry with one methane farther away from the metal in an η² binding orientation and two methanes close to the metal with a nearly η² methane for vanadium and coordination between η² and η³ CH₄ for titanium (∠M-C-H = 150°). In Ti⁺(CH₄)₄ and V⁺(CH₄)₄ all of the methanes have η² coordination. The titanium complex has a distorted square planar geometry with two different Ti-C bond lengths and the vanadium complex is square planar.

Photooxidation of Isoprene by Titanium Oxide Cluster Anions with Dimensions up to a Nanosize

Titania (TiO₂) nanoparticles are active photocatalysts, and isoprene (C₅H₈) is a biogenic volatile organic compound that contributes crucially to global particulate matter generation. Herein, the direct photooxidation of isoprene by titanium oxide cluster anions with dimensions up to a nanosize by both ultraviolet (UV) and visible (Vis) light excitations has been successfully identified through mass spectrometric experiments combined with quantum chemistry calculations. The potential role of "dry" titania in atmospheric isoprene oxidation has been revealed, and a clear picture of the photooxidation mechanism on titanium oxide nanoparticles has been provided explicitly at the molecular level. The adsorption of isoprene on the atomic oxygen radicals (O^•-) of titanium oxide clusters leads to the formation of the crucial interfacial state (IS) within the band gap of titanium oxides. This IS is demonstrated to be the significant factor in delivering the electron from the π orbital of C₅H₈ to the Ti_3d orbital in the photooxidation process (C₅H₈ + Ti⁴⁺-O^•- → C₅H₈O + Ti³⁺) and creating photoactivity in the Vis region. It is revealed that after the photogeneration of the O^•- radicals by UV excitation on the TiO₂ particle surface, the subsequent reactions can be induced by Vis excitation through the IS. This multicolor strategy in both the UV and Vis regions can enhance the efficiency of solar energy harvesting and improve the product yield of the photocatalysis on TiO₂ nanoparticles. New insights have been provided into both the atmospheric chemistry of isoprene and the photochemistry of TiO₂ nanoparticles.
